13 Ghosts (1960)

Eccentric millionaire Dr. Plato Zorba bequeaths a large house to his impoverished nephew Cyrus. Along with his wife Hilda, teen daughter Medea and adolescent son, Buck, Cyrus is informed by lawyer Ben Rush that the house comes with ghosts that Dr. Zorba has collected from around the world. The will stipulates that the family must stay in the house and cannot sell it, or it will be turned over to the state. The family is shocked to find that the house is really haunted by 12 ghosts, as if 12 weren't enough, even though there is a chapter in Dr. Zorba's diary for a 13th....who will it be?!

This is another deliciously campy offering from William Castle, who also gave us House on Haunted Hill. Noted for his clever marketing gimmicks, Castle had audiences put on 3D glasses in order to see the ghosts through a process he called Illusion-O, although there is an edited version for non-theatrical use that does not require the glasses. Also of interest is that the spooky housekeeper Elaine is played by Margaret Hamilton who previously played the Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz! Enjoy!

Love that stupid hairbrushing scene where Padme pretends to brush her curly hair. It's so doll-like, but the doll she's playing with is herself. Putting on a performance for her husband, but really acting out a fantasy for herself.

#And then she puts on her lip gloss before going to bed. Just a perfect pretty little wife with no problems #just love and domestic bliss.#it reminds me a tiny bit of that one scene in the marverlous mrs maisel #where midge waits for husband to fall asleep before taking off her make-up and putting her rollers in and then wakes and puts it all back o #before his alarm goes off and she pretends to wake up. all to preserve the illusion. the fantasy.#with padme the vibe is slightly different #because she's not really expected to perform this kind of tradwife shit #but this is her escape from the crushing weight of everything else she cares about going under #padme amidala #alternatively: she sent all her servants home so she could host her secret husband #but has no actual idea what her hair-care routine is #so she's just doing whatever #but i kinda don't entirely vibe with because of the whole handmaid body-double thing #surely she had to be able to act the part

tbh when i was designing it i did consider incorporating the classic stsg beta fish but i couldn't help but feel like fish and yin-yang imagery r a bit overused in atla,, so I did smth a lil different ! they're dragonflies :)
