I know I’m not the only woman out there who thinks that when I find my “signature scent” I’ll suddenly gain like seventy sophistication points. I’ll glide instead of walk, slipping around hard edges of furniture. My grandchildren will tell me I smell like beautiful things on fire. I will smell like the kind of woman who wears a fitted silk and lace dressing gown with all of her good jewelry. 

Thus far in my life, despite the vapid promises of every single bottle of everything I’ve ever purchased, ever, I’ve managed to smell like any number of skinned fruits, scented toilet paper, and Macy’s. 

So it was with a heavy heart and heavier side-eye that I deigned to try some solid perfume samples from an independent scent maker on Etsy. The descriptions I read were more fantastic than Elizabeth Arden yet less fantastic than Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab which seemed like a good safe zone. (Every time I order anything from BPAL I half expect it to be delivered to my window at midnight gripped in the curled fist of a Gryphon. It never does, it comes in the mail in the daytime eight weeks later and smells like someone poured Avon Skin So Soft over a cantaloupe.)

These samples that I ordered... I’m not even going to try to explain how incredible they are, I’m just going to tell you that I’m sitting here in a bias-skirted satin magenta gown and I’m not convinced I’m actually touching the sofa with any part of my body.

If you’ve spent a solid chunk of your private life both as a child and an adult searching for the thing you want to smell like for the rest of your time on Earth, go to IlluminatedPerfume on Etsy, read about her process, and then choose three samples of her solid perfume. Or four. Or twenty, you can order twenty. I ordered three; one I really like, one I fucking love, and one I now carry around with me in my mouth. 

Seriously. I don’t even know whose pearls these are. Just go.

I really wanted all of you to see what my friend Roxana , of @illuminatedperfume was doing with those glorious violets that I posted yesterday. She is one of the great masters of the art of #botanicalperfume 💜 #Repost @illuminatedperfume ・・・ Plants require patience. For this tincture I harvested the violets and then filled a glass jar with the little flowers, I then covered them in a high proof alcohol. The color purple is amazing, isn’t it?! I will continue to swap out the spent flowers with new ones to “charge” the alcohol.
