no literally like star wars demonstrates that there are so many ways to use the force outside of the Jedi/Sith dichotomy but the Jedi are also like the ones who gained the most power and prominence throughout most of galactic history (iirc? i am actually so suspicious of this god damn moth post but i cant find any concrete evidence to prove theres something wrong with it other than my gut feeling and i feel insane

like of course first of all this post is from 2013 and im not really willing to believe any given post from 2013 is true specially when the post is this amazing coincidence of this person coincidentally finding those two coincidentally aesthetically pleasing moths and managing to get them coincidentally snuggling together for a picture. yknow. it does feel too weirdly good to be true

BUT SECONDLY im so weirded out by these two moths specifically.

ok bear with me. the little one is very obviously a rosy maple moth. (which is also coincidentally one of the most famous moths specifically for being pretty)

but im willing to believe any given english speaking tumblrgirl at the time could find one considering they live seemingly accross the united states and canada. fair enough

BUT my problem is the big one. of course everybody even in the notes seems to be classifying it as a luna moth (ALSO a famous moth species for being pretty) you can also feasibly find them in north america, ok.

theres also the point of their lifespans

luna moths as adults live only for about 7-10 days, and i had a harder time finding info for adult rosy maple moths but it seems its about the same

the source of this is an old article from someone actively breeding maple moths x but i believe its the same with moths in general, since they literally dont have mouths and cant eat so they just mate and die.

SO youre gonna have a small time span to find one. both moths are also mainly nocturnal, which makes even weirder that op found both of them during the day.

theres also the point of WHEN are they adults. aka maply moths seem to show from from may through the summer

luna moths though, seem to vary in when they show up depending on place. some do include late may or early june on northern regions, ans a generation in july in central states.

which means you could, feasibly, have a span of about a week or so in may, june or july where both maple moths and luna moths are adults and alive at the same time.

BUT THE POST IN QUESTION IS FROM APRIL 16

thats NOT when adult rosy maple moths show up, much less both of them.

though maybe im just being too pedandic with specific dates and theres margin for variation, but its, again, some real big coincidences

BUT FINALLY theres the fact im suspicious about this luna moth IN THE FIRST PLACE.

i might just be going actually crazy here, but for this we've been assuming the luna moth is the species that exists in north america (otherwise these two wouldnt be in the same place at all)

and you see how theyre kinda weird compared to the one in the pic.

the luna moths are mostly green, with much less of this pretty pastel pink of the one on the tumblr post. you could argue they have pink markings but in most pictures i see they seem more like a dark red/brown with a remarkable very thick marking on the wings

you see how the moth in the pic just looks kinda weird. but that can also be from filters or editing to make the photo prettier making the colors different.

(i also think the tail looks weirdly long, but there seems to be variation in the tail length in various luna moth pics ive seen, so i cant speak for sure about that)

(i also cant tell you whether the sizes in comparison to each other are right cause i suck at visualizing size comparisons and its not like theres any other pic on earth of the two together so.)

CONCLUSION: i dont fucking know. i spent an hour looking moths up online and didnt get any reasonable answer to my doubts. i guess in the end THERE is, even if small, a chance of you finding both these boths alive at the same time in the same place so i can fully discredit the op. i give up im going to have breakfast

i mean, respectfully, i would certainly push back on the idea she “tells him what to do” cus she’s certainly his emotional intelligence like she tells him what hes thinking—or at least her interpretation of what he’s thinking. theres certainly evidence of that, the scene that comes to mind is its in late s3, and mike wants to leave to take the finance job, and harvey snaps at scottie, and donna (very gently) reprimands him for it, and she tells him he’s hurt not angry “you’re hurt and the anger covers the hurt, but i know you didn’t know that.” she definitely provides him with insight into his emotions, but in a way i would argue any friend would.

there’s also a scene from season 2(?) i think, where donna is trying to get harvey to pursue scottie and she tells him to his face “i know your mother hurt you but you need to get over it” or, in other words “sorry about your mommy issues but you need to grow the fuck up.” and again i think thats a perfectly reasonable thing to say as a friend to your friend—she sees him hurting and lonely and she can do something about it, all she needs to do is encourage him to seek out a relationship with a woman who loves him, i think that’s perfectly acceptable.

i really dont see how its patronizing in any way? i mean there are certainly a couple jokes like “men are so stupid lol” but nothing that has really stood out to me as anything different than 2010s network drama gender politics, and so few and far between i cant think of any specific instances off the top of my head.

second of all, to the best of my knowledge (having seen up to 6x05 atp), that all stops when he starts going to therapy. i cant think of a single instance after season 5 when she tells him what hes feeling (i mean maybe she does in seasons 7, 8 + 9 but i haven’t seen it so i cant say lol)

but from what ive seen, her telling him his emotions stops when he starts receiving therapy with a trained professional. and thats just healthy! yknow he no longer needs to be told what hes thinking because he’s learning more about himself and his reaction to trauma and how to be a more functionally stable adult. and after that is the only way he can keep and maintain a meaningful, productive relationship.

also, not to be crass but i 100% think harvey goes face down ass up when someone tells him what to do (especially if its mike or donna or jessica)

finally i do fully respectfully disagree that “theyre good as besties but he doesn’t want more” first of all, i think you might be confusing his repression and inability to parse his love for donna as a woman and his love for donna as a friend, as a lack of attraction. i think a) hes very repressed and messed up from his childhood so like, he can fuck people but loving people is a whole other story and b) he absolutely loves her as a friend, and i think he’s just boxed up his attraction and affection for her since they moved to pearson hardman 10(?) years ago.

PREFACE: I AM A JAIDEN ANIMATIONS FAN, THIS IS NOT MEANT TO BE A HATE POST OR ANYTHING OF THE SORT, ITS JUST MY SUBJECTIVE FEELINGS AND SORT OF MUSINGS

Watched jaidenanimation's new video earlier today, and Im torn. Cause on one hand I feel really happy for her for having made it to 10 years, and I understand the desire to do something else after having done a job for a while, to just relax and be yourself and possibly even rediscover yourself. But also the life she described after youtube is just not a realistic one, even for normal people. Part of the reason the job market is so utterly dogshit is because they work really hard to try and pidgeonhole you into certain positions and actively punish you for going against it. An increasing number of companies are requiring 2-3 years work experience for entry level positions (I wish I was kidding). They don't like it when your most recent job was in a different industry, even if it was for college. And any sort of gap in employment is blamed upon your laziness and lack of work ethic.

And colleges get increasingly pickier about your qualifications and if you should get money the older you are because they want that space youre taking up for some 18 year olds who don't know how to bargain or finacially plan well. My college has a secondary college specifically for "adults" (people over 22). Ive only met about 10 people over 22 in classes, and all of them were seeking masters, doctorates, or work certifications. I have only ever met 2 people over 30 who I took classes with, one seeking a masters while the other was working towards getting a work certification. There are people out there who get bachelors late or second ones after their first set, but they are a rare breed, and often times they either have to have a lot of money on hand or have to be willing to go into debt.

And if you go the self owned buisness route, you have the exact same problem that jaiden complained about with youtube, which is that it never actually leaves your mind, it is always there, a shadow at the edge of your vision.

I just, I dunno, I love Jaiden's content and I'm really happy for her, and I think its kinda sweet she idolizes the simple life. But I also think this video sort of epitomizes the fact that the people who got to make youtube a full time job sort of believe they live in a different world totally separate from ours, and they don't really know what normal is, at least not at the point jaiden's at. It felt like when cottagecore was really popular and people talked about the ideal of "the simple life" or when people were obsessed with van life and a bunch of people then had to come out and say "NO, ITS NOT ALL SUNSHINE AND ROSES". Youtube is a job that changes your lifestyle, but so is... any job. My friend whos gonna start student teaching next semester feels like they can't swear anymore or else theyre gonna slip up. My friend who works as an auctioneer basically has no time for his social life anymore. I constantly have work and college looming in my mind, and I've been repeatedly told to be prepared to dedicate all my time to my work since Im going into a stem field. Its all just sort of a part of growing up and taking on adult life. It's just all work in one form or another. It's incredibly difficult to genuinely retire at a young age now adays so if you want to no longer do a job you're going to have to switch instead. And there is no shame in wanting a job change, but it is always important to recognize what such a change will entail and if you're willing to undergo the hardship you will have to endure to get any sort of reward from it. So... yeah.

Tldr: Jaiden's new 10 year anniversary video reminded me that people really do think the grass is greener on the other side.

How do you get over dislike/distrust in therapy?

Ive been seieng shrinks on and off since i was 12. they only ever were effective for getting me medication or telling my parents to stop being dicks. as an adult, ive tried a few different therapists but the search is exhausting, and even after finding someone, it always ends up being annoying, akward, and obvious they dont actually care

I know therapy is good and would help me etc, but finding therapists is damn near impossible, let alone finding a good one. Theyre all overbooked and its hard to see a therapist caring about me in any way more than "Person who pays money to sit around while i join the zoom call late and force them to meditate while i try to remember why theyre seeing me"

My psychiatrist decided to drop me because I couldnt find any therapists available as I work 40+ hours a week, and tbh her dropping me didnt inspire me to look harder, its just making me want to give up on all of this entirely (luckily my PCP will keep providing my meds but jfc)

I'm gonna butt in with the controversial opinion that you do not have to be in therapy if you do not want to be and also haven't benefitted from it. There are other ways to work on yourself which are just as valid - and while therapy CAN be really good and helpful, it is not actually inherently superior to all other coping strategies.

how dadow is in my head:

this is quite optimistic tbf, dadow to me is very much a guilty pleasure thing, even if i believe it as a theory. this also shouldn't get into characterisation mostly, seeing as ive gone over shadow and silver plenty of times before, but im a very character-focused person so i might accidentally.

they live in a little cottage in a wood. it's based on this cottage in the lake district that my extended family own because i cant imagine original interior layouts for the life of me. in better timelines, there's a garden, while in worse ones, there isn't even a wood, just the ruins of an old cottage. i dont know much canon content with silver other than in idw so i could be getting his powers entirely wrong, my apologies.

shadow is all over the place. he can be terrifying, he can be goofy. i think seeing as he's spent a lifetime growing as a person and even longer in solitude, he's going to be quite a different person. he shows silver love right off the bat and continues to do so forever. also hes wrinkly because hes hundreds of years old (for gods sake stop giving him eye bags, a single worry line and calling it a day, at that point just dont give him wrinkles)

silver visits from the past frequently upon becoming an adult and is really close with his dad. theyve had their moments, but mostly get on well with each other. from a certain point onwards, he decides to move in with his dad.

omega (and any other robots who made it) arent particularly thrilled to raise silver the hedgehog, of all children. theyre more like weird uncles/aunts/whatever to silver. for an example of another robot, if belle somehow survives, she's probably been stripped to her mechanical components by that point. she'd probably fix things for silver and things along that line, but she's already been through enough, she doesnt want to have to deal with that nuclear bomb of a baby.

i think shadow sees ghosts sometimes, although im not sure if silver can see them or not. of course, they're all restricted to the building they died in, however a lot of those buildings dont exist anymore, so can visit shadow. maybe he can only see them when silver isnt there and he can definitely only see them sparingly. i like fluff and thats what dadow mostly is for me, but for something like this i definitely need a tiny bit of angst. only the tiniest bit though.

as silver grows old and shadow is forced to see him die, shadow fears moving on. thankfully, silver dies in shadow's house, so he can still visit his son.

(im gonna be honest the ghost thing was entirely for sonadow purposes and then slowly turned into other things like being able to see team dark)

bc like. god. actually i think i wrote a whole like. bit of flash fiction/prose poetry type thing for them a while ago. probably in my files somewhere. but just. youre an immortal eight year old. you are in these years where you need to interact with other people for your own mental stability and health. to figure out the whole Being A Person thing. and you are trapped for like, centuries. trapped away from everyone and everything and DUST, which, in universe, in literally connection personified. you're cut off from all of this.

and you are, let me say again, eight years old.

truly the collector is just. hes had everyone he ever cares about leave him--his siblings the other archivists left him behind not out of any sense of cruelty, really, but because caring about people just isnt really a thing they do. quite frankly they live so long they didnt even notice. theyre far-away stars. not far because they're mean. just because thats what stars do.

and then king's dad (who um. doesnt have a name <3 this is why the collector calls him 'the big bully' its literally bc i never gave him a name--) was an adult the collector actually trusted and looked up to (he meshed REALLY WELL into titan society until the archivists started Doing A Murder since titans are the only beings that match them in power and they have very very different ideas about dust). like ive said before the collector is owlbeastkin but before that they never had a super stable sense of identity--in another world where they stayed w/ the titans they wouldve ended up a titan.

and then king's dad just. trapped him in a tablet forever.

and like, to be fair to king's dad he was reacting out of fear and the best knowledge he had (he assumed the collector led the archivists to the titans, and like, he did, but its not like he knew he was doing that, and, you know, poor guy had seen a huge chuck of his fellow titans killed including babies and eggs of which he had an egg to consider), but it still TRAPPED THEM. and then he died and so did all the rest of the titans so nobody could free the collector even if they wanted to.

and then BELOS, who manipulated and lied to the collector for so long and was also literally his only friend after being alone forever, so like, of course the collector just blindly went along with whatever he said. he was gonna free them!! he listened to them when they talked about stardust which nobody else ever did! he had no idea what the fuck a witch was! he just liked being able to see the stardust sometimes, and belos brought him to places with a lot of stardust. to destroy it, but like--you know. it was THERE.

but all these people were just USING them, and they never really understand that until king comes around. and king's also a scared eight year old!! but like. king's also not wrong. the collector did aid belos in destroying the entire isles. like no joke belos SUCCEEDS here. like not long-term obvi this has a happy ending but at the point we're in at for the future? it doesnt matter that the draining spell failed. all the palistrom trees are dead. witch society Cannot come back from that even if they did end up beating the collector. theyre doomed.

so like, then they meet firefly/grr-click-growl/wings-across-night/the owl beast (king of having so many names i love her <3) and shes like, the first person who cares for them and ISNT using them. even king is using them!! but firefly has seen Some Shit. she sees the collector as a hatchling who was kicked out of his nest and is doing her best to be some sort of stable figure for him, but she doesnt Not see the stuff he's done.

the collector took over the world bc he's scared--all he's ever known is being used and trapped so he doesnt exactly trust most people easily. firefly would Love to not be in this world anymore. shes also got a loyalty to eda and king and luzmari. and, like, cool motive, still trapping an entire society of people.

but like. shes the one who is here right now and nobody else is trying to help this kid.

but the collector just. hes just an eight year old. a very, very old eight year old. but he doesnt understand things like "you can make the wrong choices and still choose to do better later" and "im mad at what you did but that doesnt mean i dont care about you."

he just sees someone upset with him. just sees another person who used him and doesnt care and is going to leave bc everyone leaves him and in a world where EVERY SINGLE PERSON comes in pairs, hes the only one who stands alone.

GLADLY. OKAY first off here is their reference just so you can get a clearer look at them without all the shading and such

and now infodump incoming. im copy-pasting a lot of this from a server where i talked about them already but its cool its fine

Epoch is in some weird gray area between being a tfoc and a tf sona cause their whole schtick is that their outlier ability flings them around the timeline at random intervals. like they're an oc in their own right but they're also kind of born of my inability to keep the timeline straight in my head because of how much tf media ive consumed. i use the word "Untethered" to describe their situation since it sounds cooler than just saying they have a flimsy grip on the timeline lol

the specifics of their ability are kind of convoluted but in simplest terms, they're paradox-proof. which means they cant really affect anything that would majorly change the course of events. their outlier ability kind of slingshots them through time without much rhyme or reason and any point where they might be about to alter the timeline irrepairably they get flung to a different point before they can go through with it. it is entirely arbitrary but i dont actually have to worry about how they'd work in a canon setting so i can do what i want

all this to say that even if they happened to randomly end up in the exact right time/place, they wouldnt be able to do something like stop the war. the timeline is actually really good at preserving itself and the universe doesnt like being completely uprooted so their ability will active and send them to another time before they can affect any major events.

their time travel works by law of fixed space which means that when they time travel, they stay where they are. so if theyre on a planet or a ship and they jump to a particular point and the ship has left or the planet has moved along its orbit, they will. kind of just be floating in space. there is a small amount of grace with this in that they will not intersect preexisting matter, so theyre not gonna end up stuck through any walls, but they have a space-worthy jet alt mode for a reason

only one Epoch can ever exist at a certain point-- similar to how Unicron is a universal singularity, Epoch is a temporal singularity-- but they actually can travel to the same point multiple times-- each new jump acts like an "overwrite" to the previous one, however it only applies if they repeat interactions. so they can end up at the same point at multiple instances, but if they only interact with different people and dont cross paths with anyone they met before, all of those instances of their appearance will continue to exist in the memory of the mechs who encountered them. for example say they went back to a point when baby-Epoch was around and babying under the dubiously-careful supervision of then-senator shockwave. if adult-Epoch went to wherever they were as a baby at that time, they would not be there, because there is only One Epoch ever. and so shockwave would only remember interacting with adult-Epoch at that instance (until they left). however if Adult-Epoch instead went to hang out with Bumblebee or whoever and didnt get seen by/interact with shockwave at all, then shockwave would continue to only remember baby-Epoch. because the timeline does not like being fucked with. it does not like trying to reason with the existence of multiple instances of the same Moment occurring more than once (because time is linear, but its also relative to an individual). and so the way that it resolves potential paradox situations is just. getting rid of the previous instances.

heres a really simple diagram to explain what i mean. the red line is the uninterrupted linear timeline of a normal mech. light blue line represents previous-instance-Epoch while the dark blue line represents current-instance-Epoch. the appearance of current-Epoch will override that of previous-Epoch, while leaving the rest of the interaction unaltered.

while irl i believe in the multiverse theory irt how time travel would work, with Epoch i have it based in the relative time of a single timeline. time is Fixed. it cant be moved around. and i know cybertronian dates work a little differently but assume that each Date/Instance can only happen once, and so if epoch happens to repeat the same Instance more than once, whatever the most "recent" (relative to them) version of that Instance is becomes the one that is "real" two different mechs can have completely differing memories of the same instance. if they happened to be in two entirely different places at once, they very well could Both remember meeting Epoch. even though only one of those meetings "actually" happened, because they cant be in two places at once but there is no such thing as "actually" happened except what is currently happening. all time beyond the present moment is entirely theoretical until it's happening. and since time is relative the past/present/future only exist in the perception of an individual.

thinking about the specifics of how their outlier ability works is kind of like playing 5d chess with multiverse time travel so do not worry if this all sounds like a bunch of pseudoscience technobabble

i can also talk about who they are, like, as a person if you want i just find the theoretical science of time travel fascinating

Okay, I just finished rewatching the first season of Miraculous and I have some thoughts, but before that I need to complain

Why the fuck is the episode order Lika That? I initially set out to watch the episodes in production order rather than release order because I knew there was some funky stuff going on with the release order, only to find that the production order was also all fucked up ??? So I had to rely on someone on reddit who was kind enough to write down a chronological episode order for the first three seasons (and despite that, Origins ended up as the last two episodes of season 1 for some reason, although I am retroactively glad about that tbh, more on that later). Fortunately it looks like seasons 2 and 3 do just follow the production order so watching those will hopefully be easier

One of my main reasons I wanted to rewatch Miraculous and finish it is that I wanted to see if it was even a good kids show. Because while a lot of MLB fans and critics bring up good points about the missed potential of the show, it feels like a lot of them go about it from the perspective of adults or older teens who want to enjoy it as a piece of media that caters to them, rather than as the show for children it actually is (which isnt exclusive to this fandom, its just kinda a general tumblr thing but still). Its something that really bothers me about critiques of childrens media because yes, making something for a young audience isnt an excuse to make something bad, but you still need to apply different standards for kids media than you would for teen and adult media. What I mean by that is, just because a piece of media for children doesnt appeal to you, an adult, doesnt mean its bad, its just not for you.

So, Miraculous isnt well-written by the standards of media in general, but is it a good kids show? The first season, yes. Since Ive already watched seasons 2 and 3 and seen a lot of the spoilers for seasons 4 and 5, I know theres gonna be some problems and Im gonna run into some issues with my future critiques because it genuinely gets hard to tell what theyre even trying to do narratively and if theyre trying to appeal to the under 10 crowd like the first season or trying to become more mature and for tweens (10-12 year olds) as the series goes on, which are important things to consider when critiquing the show like this but Im gonna worry about that later

For now, yes, the first season is a good kids show.

The characters are pretty archetypical and Adrien is honestly pretty bland when hes not Cat Noir but theyre all ultimately pretty likable (or hatable in Chloe, Lila and to a lesser extend Kim's cases) and I like the diversity in Marinettes class, both in terms of ethnicity and in terms of bodytype. That being said, the designs of both the civilian characters and their akumatized versions are mediocre and personalityless at best and straightup awful at worst. For the akumatized villains I find it kinda weird that theres not really a consistent style to them. Some of them, like Stormy Weather, Lady Wi-Fi and Evillustrator, practically have the same color scheme, some of them, like Stormy Weather, Puppeteer and Reflecta, have the vibes of magical girl anime villains, some of them, like Timebreaker, Simon Says and Rogercop, seem like villains you'd find in a western comic book series etc. And it really doesnt feel like its because of the personality of the akumatized or because of their feelings when they got akumatized, it feels like its just kinda random every time and Im not a big fan of that. Marinettes Ladybug suit is really bland and I dont like how much emphasis it puts on her underage body especially since this a show claims to be empowering to young girls while Adriens Cat Noir suit looks fine i guess, just kinda generic for a black cat superhero. I dont think it'll ruin the experience for any kid watching the show but to me stuff like this is a pretty big display of carelessness, especially considering fashion is so important with Marinette wanting to be a designer and the main villain being a world renowed fashion designer.

The animation is pretty good for TV cgi though and I actually found the fight scenes very engaging and fun, I think kids who like action would really enjoy them

After watching seasons 2 and 3, I was honestly very surpised to see that Marinettes crush on Adrien and her awkwardsness around him was actually pretty cute and endearing initially. Like yeah, shes a bit of a weirdo about it but shes not like, a stalker and her awkwardness feel like an appropriate level of over the top-ness for an animated kids show and its definitely a far cry from the cringy, unecessarily slap-sticky shit I remembered, so that was nice. The writing in general was far less juvenile and trying-too-hard-to-be-funny, except for Hawk Moth. Now, theyre not trying too hard to make him funny, theyre actually trying to do the opposite, but hes just impossible to take seriously with his cringy lines every time he goes to akumatize someone. I think it would be better if the sequence of him sending the akuma out was silent, like we the potential victim get angry, cut to Hawk Moth smirking and doing his thing with the akuma in silence, then we see the victim get akumatized and talk to Hawk Moth except we dont hear him so its one-sided. But like with the character-design stuff, i dont think this will ruin the show for the kids but I do think making the main villain more mysterious and scary would be an improvement.

One of the big ways that the show fumbles imo are the lessons. Like, lets take Stormy Weather; the girl (I forgot her name sry) gets akumatized because she lost the vote to become weather girl and went on this huge rampage taking her anger out on everyone. From that description alone I would assume that the lesson of the episode would be about being a sore loser and how you cant always win in life so you shouldnt get so angry when you lose and that lesson would be taught by our Paragon of Goodness Ladybug, but its not. Ladybug doesnt talk to her about being a sore loser and has one of those 'say the moral outloud' kids media-moments, she just gets de-evilized and seems too exhausted to be angry anymore and thats how that ends. The actual lesson, the one that Marinette needs to learn, is how to say no to things and that its okay to accept help and not burden yourself with responsibility so much. And thats a good lesson but its so disconnected from the bulk of the episode in a way that it really shouldnt be

Im also suprised that a show with this premise doesnt have more conclusion-scenes where, after Ladybug saved the day, Marinette goes up to the akumatized person and tries to cheer them up. Like, a lot of the people who get akumatized are pretty much strangers to her so I get why she doesnt go up to those (although I still think she could spare some encouraging words for them in her Ladybug suit considering the experience they just went through), but a lot of them are her classmates and it would demonstrate why Marinette is a good Ladybug, whether shes transformed or not. As it stands, there are episodes where she is that Paragon Of Goodness that teaches other people lessons and episodes where shes just clumsy impulsive Marinette who needs to learn how to be more confident and responsible. That might be intentional, but because the villains and Marinette in civillian form are so disconnected, I dont think the dichotomy here works very well.

And the thing is, she actually does reach out the akuma victim as Marinette in Origins. Honestly, most of the issues I named arent present in Origins, with the exception of Hawk Moth being hard to take seriously; Adrien actually has an endearing personality when not Cat Noir and you understand why Marinette likes him so much, Marinette and her civillian persona feel less disconnected from the Ladybug stuff because she actually talks to Ivan and her learning to be more confident as a heroine helping her become more confident and assertive in her daily life is really good, even if the lessons of "talk honestly about your feelings" and "be more confident and have faith in yourself" arent directly connected either (although still arguably more than the two lessons in Stormy Weather)

Origins as a whole is a far better episode than any other season 1 episode and really feels likethe set-up for a far better and more interesting show. I really think the main thing holding this entire season back is the fact that its episodic and we didnt get to see Marinette and Adrien develop as heroes or anything else, we just kinda smashcut to their 'default' dynamics and while we can ultimately guess how those dynamics ended up developing from Origins onwards, we really shouldnt have to guess, we shouldve seen it because it wouldve been fun and interesting and the show would be much better.

Considering the fact that they jump straight into serialization with season 2 and european cartoons having continuity is pretty common, I have no idea why they would start out episodic like this when all it does is drag the series down. My best guess is that they were trying to imitate popular american cartoons at the time, which usually started with the first season being entirely episodic and then having a big season finale that changes the status quo in some major way before it continues in a more serialized format. But why they did it doesnt really matter, all that matters is that the show is worse for it, although definitely not bad or unsalvagable. This is a very solid start for what couldve been a great show, but just kinda ended up being pretty bad instead

it is once again a late-night drawing/posting moment where im choosing to post immediately instead of potentially just not releasing anything bc i got cold feet after waking up the morning after. i'm making an effort to make sense but if anything is not comprehensible or you just want more details, the ask box is open. i'd love to talk about what ive got for any of my characters so far! moving along in about the order i drew/wrote things in, let's start here

i started off drawing them doing The Thing that is captain's idle pose for the majority of the game but i didnt like the first sketch so i was like "okay i want a Good line of action and then im gonna build around that" and this is what came of it. they just like extremely twisted around and would absolutely be destroying their spine if they had one bc that was just the flow of the sketch apparently. i was gonna also color this but i didnt really like how it was going and i started losing the details of the pose the longer i went (i dont really like how the look of the clothes came out and it probably shows) so i just kind of left it.

ive been doing a lot of jumping around fleshing out my splatoon ocs (which currently consists primarily of my agents) and like essentially reentering my splatoon mind. to start with, each of my player agent ocs were on some level self-inserts of differing amounts (i mean theyre literally like. inkfish you to a certain extent. like in many respects theyre pretty much blank slates by design (or lack thereof as promo material just uses one of the default options which are by no means mandatory given the whole player settings screen existing and yknow. being acknowledged. you get it right)) but by now they're pretty separate. there are some more overarching themes to them though that im keeping in, like a sort of longing for identity in the transition from teenager to adult where others seem to be more realized. if that makes sense. finding and wrangling with one's senses of identity and purpose so far is a thing for all of these guys. gee i wonder where that came from. anyways the thought i had to like cut out for flow is actually not going to be that great to do that to bc i was thinking i'd segue into that but i didnt like this next part is more of a design thought

¹my current working hc which informs the designs of my splatoon ocs so far includes the idea that ear shape is something that can vary not just from person to person but also with age and that the thinner, pointed, more traditionally "elf-like" ear (seen in the squid sisters, grandpa cuttlefish, and frye, as examples) might be more common the older an inkling is, compared to the blunter, more equilateral triangle-ish shape from the younger player inklings and others. of importance, this isn't hard and fast, not even to typhoon's design, as i can also very easily come back to it later and be like "hm. yeah i dont actually feel like doing this for them", but i was thinking about the ear shape from that inkling development chart from however many years ago and was like .. okay actually i don't remember what i thought in detail im really about to conk out honestly. but for example, dallas (my agent 4), who's just 2 years younger doesn't have the elf-y ears either (well hes not supposed to, but i dont think it really showed last post 💀) because that's just not how his ears look or will look (likewise for a less fleshed out non-agent character who is also an inkling and of a similar age). not to mention, of course, the many band members who are inklings with the triangular ears, as the idea is again that the elf-ear look becomes More common with age, not that it Is common immediately. even still, though, typhoon's ears arent the exact same shape as callie and marie's either, but more sort of in between them and the player inklings. all this to say, my goal is in part to have some variety more particular to splatoon than just general humanoid frame things outside of the hairstyles bc thats something that i have struggled with and so as it stands im basically tossing things at the wall to see what sticks and either working from there or tearing it all down and starting over.

anyways i like to also draw typhoon's tentacles down. the shapes are fun. sometimes they want them away from their face but sometimes they don't care

i dont know why i started going pokedex mode there but i do know it was before 1am when i wrote that. i have a Bunch of shit written down in various places (personally. i don't have very much more than the barest introductory stuff up yet bc of the fact that im still ironing out a bunch of these things) and it was at this point that i realized i cant really distill it into notes but i'll explain a little bit. splatoon 1 was huge for me as a budding artist and someone like. beginning to actually Think about things? it was the first thing i really found myself world-building with, it was a huge factor in me having realizations about myself, and even if retroactively so (after all, taunt parties were a thing in brawl and i played the shit out of that), got me thinking about video game communication and (likely not the right term) pseudo-languages and a whole bunch of other things. some of these don't directly relate to typhoon's development but what does relate to it is .. oh the train of thought literally disappeared actually. uh.

Okay, Im pretty sure Ive reached the point at which I originally stopped watching so. yay

To celebrate this occasion I thought I should talk a little about some of the complaints Ive seen about the finale in my for you tab because yeah, I just cant resist looking at it so Ive been spoiled pretty severely and also been dealt a good amount of psychic damage. But hey, its about the journey, not the destination and Im already in Advanced Therapy for my mental illnesses anyway

The two most complaints Ive seen are, it wasnt cathartic and it sends a terrible message. Now, I cant comment on the catharsis bc I havent watched it yet and also Im not even sure if that would be a deal breaker for me. Like, anti-climaxes can be very powerful, Schlatts death is one of my favorite moments in the entire dsmp düfor that exact reason. But that all depends on the execution so I'll save my more detailed thoughts for after Ive actually watched it

The complaint that I wanted to talk about in more detail now is the one about it 'sending a terrible message'

I spend a lot of time watching and analyzing kids shows specifically on the basis of "is this a good show for kids?" Like, kids will watch anything you put in front of them bc they dont know any better so I think its important to put something in front of them that encourages creativity, critical thinking and sends messages of compassion good and other things I cant think of off the top of my head. When analyzing kids shows like this its very important to keep that target demographic in mind because what kids like and need is often different from what teens and adults would consider well-written and thats fine. Theres plenty of kids media that can be enjoyed by teens and adults as well, but its perfectly fine for kids media to only cater to kids and even be actively boring for older demographics.

Keeping the fact that kids media should be analyzed differently than more mature media because its written differently, I dont think it controversial of me to say that, unlike kids media, media for teens and adults doesnt need to teach anything. The way I see it, kids media has messages while adult media has themes. Obviously theres a bit more nuance to this, but Im not trying to write an essay here, Im trying to complain about fandom shit

And I know this might be a hard pill to swallow for some people bc this is the internet where 7 year olds and 17 year olds are basically the same because theyre both "minors" with absolutely no nuance, but teenagers arent children and theyre not so impressionable that seeing a character in a minecraft roleplay be sympathetic towards their abuser is gonna suddenly make them forgive their own abusers if they didnt want to do that before or make them blind or to IRL abuser or whatever man, I dont even really know what exactly the concern is. Like, idk how to tell you this but the line between fiction and reality is not that thin and if the media someone consumes affects them that much theyre either very young or there are some underlining issues that storytellers are not obligated to account for.

Not to mention that dsmp is a story told from a bunch of different perspectives by a bunch of unreliable narrators who are all varying levels of shitty. Like, in kids shows the protagonists and the non-anatgonist supporting characters are role models and vehicles to teach messages, that doesnt fucking apply here, theyve literally made jokes about everyone being an unreliable narrator i dont know why anyone would think this is the kind of series where theyre actively trying to impart some kind of lesson, its literally Fucked Up Shit Happens feat, Fucked Up People: The Minecraft Roleplay

To end this weird long rant, Id like to say that I do understand why people would be upset with the ending (from the details I was able to gleam anyway) and as much as I think complaining about the 'bad message' is invalid and frankly kindof weird, being upset is still totally fine and valid.

I mean the message stroud put in these books that just sneaks up on you when you never would have expected it, the characters that walk and breathe long after the book is closed, the emotion so damn real ive never seen a ‘kids book’ like before or after.
