Tech Themed Playlist
So after the season 2 finale of the Bad Batch, I made a playlist on spotify to process my feelings and Imo it came out pretty good and I thought some people on here might be interested
Reasons for songs added are under the cut:
I tried to put it in a vague sense of order, kinda like a vague timeline
Bad Batch Theme - Self explanatory (ignore that there are 4 different versions, I couldn't decide which one I like best)
Not The Same - A song written by an autistic singer about his experiences and struggles growing up with autism, considering the Batch already seem to struggle socially due to their different looks, I'm betting Tech had an even harder time being autistic
Machine Learning - Another song about learning to navigate social situations as an autistic person, frames it in terms of machine learning which obviously ties into Tech's skills and knowledge when it comes to technology and machines
Barricades - This song feels like it represents the Batch's struggles to connect with their reg brothers
Feed the Machine - This song feels fairly representative of the first few episodes, the Batch realising they were just pawns, and are being expected to fall in line and follow orders (heh) without question
All My Friends Are Strangers - The Batch realising that everything has changed and the clones they fought alongside of are no longer the people they knew
Renegades - The Batch are currently renegades, they rejected the Empire and ran away, could also be seen as Tech's POV, attempting to convince Crosshair to come with them
Brother - A conversation between Tech and Crosshair, Tech talking to Crosshair and his regrets leaving him behind and how he sees that Crosshair is hurting, while Crosshair is talking about how he feels betrayed by the Batch and is angry that they left him (I may be making a Crosshair themed playlist where this song also features)
Hey Brother - Tech was the one pushing for the Batch to go rescue Crosshair, he was the one who was listening out on their comms channels in hope that Crosshair would try to contact them, this song shows his dedication to his brothers (and sister) and how he is willing to put himself in danger for even a chance to save them (;-;)
Brother - Another song focusing on how Tech was willing to do anything for his brothers (and sister) and he would risk his own life to help the people he loves (;-;) (also I didn't intentionally add three songs named "brother" but they all fit so well)
Disobeying Orders - AFAIK this song isn't actually from the finale episode, but I couldn't pass up that name
Plan 99 - I mean, how could I not?
The Sacrifice - Again, how could I not?
How Do I Say Goodbye - Hunter and Wrecker's POV, trying to figure out how to live without someone they've probably spent almost every moment with for their entire lives
Angry - Omega's POV, she can't understand why everyone else isn't as outwardly distraught as she is, why no one else is trying to go back for Tech, refusing to believe that he is gone
Wrecked - Another Omega POV, while I do feel it applies to all of them, as far as I'm aware, this is the first time Omega has dealt with someone she was close to dying and I really feel like she's gonna struggle to deal with it (also the line "These days when I'm on the brink of the edge, Remember the words that you said" feels very relevant to Omega considering the conversation she had with Tech about how he processes change and about moving on)
Unsteady - Could be from many POVs, Wrecker, Hunter, Echo, Omega, and Phee all feel like they fit this song, all holding onto each other, trying to process their collective loss
Space Man - This one also feels like a general song of everyone mourning Tech and wishing they could go back to before Order 66 and everything that happened
Our Last Summer - Phee's POV, Phee looking back on the time she got to spend with Tech, and her trying to appreciate the time they did get to have
Remember Them - Echo POV, Echo teaching Omega how to deal with the pain of losing Tech, since he has had a lot of experience in losing the people close to him (;-;)
Back to the Old House - Tech's POV, Tech wishing he had been able to tell Phee how he felt and how he wishes he could have spent longer with her
Oak Trees - Tech's POV, talking to the rest of the Batch, as well as Phee, trying to comfort them because he's no longer in pain, no longer has to worry, he's finally at peace
Coming Home - Another Tech POV, mostly me trying to convince myself that he's at peace and no longer running and hurting and scared
End Credits - It felt right considering this is the end of his story

Tolerance Ability not in Ability A producers Commentary Part 1 in the Beginning  25th Anniversary Edition
Introduction
Ever watched a film with an audio commentary? Imagine that I am sat beside you at home in your living room on the couch, explaining what happened as we made the Tolerance film. This blog will do just that and give you a more complete story about the making of Tolerance, including new interviews with the cast and crew, behind the scenes stories, and details of deleted scenes that ended up on the cutting room floor.
The best news is we have managed to find over 107 behind-the-scenes photographs from the original film.  They come from Rob Martin, who was meticulous at labelling these photos; the information includes the date when they were taken the location and which are the best photos to use
Tumblr media
Tolerance Member Helen Batty approached me with more photos, which included shots taken on the last day of shooting at the Odeon Cinema in Huddersfield and the Ropewalk Pub. While going through the Tolerance film paperwork I came across the shooting schedule the props and costume lists all added more to the Tolerance story
This new version of the blog written for the 25th Anniversary of the film also includes screengrabs taken from the Tolerance film from a cleaned up digital copy that Ian Medley made in 2020
Tumblr media
Background
The Tolerance Project was made up of a group of non-disabled and disabled people aged between 18 and 25 in the West Yorkshire area.
The idea behind the film was one of Jeremy Walkers many ideas and it was a good one we first began talking about making a disability awareness film in 1997 in fact here I am on the front cover of a 1997 edition of CDS news talking about our early plans to Huddersfield Examiner Reporter Jenny Parkin there was even an interview with me inside the booklet
Tumblr media
We wanted to make a film that reflected the life of young disabled people in the 21st century. It was important to us as a group that it was funny, and that it would capture the humour within the group. At the same time, we wanted it to deliver a serious message about what it was like to live with a disability day-to-day.
The film has five main themes: Employment, Social Life, Transport, Accessibility, and Relationships. We chose these themes because they were important areas of all the lives of the group members.
If we were going to make the film we wanted to be involved with it as much as possible provide as many of the cast and crew in the finished film as we could. In the end other members of the Tolerance who were not in front of the camera worked behind the camera in the various behind the scenes roles.
After a couple of false starts we approached a company called Eclipse Productions run by Richard Hellawell. The film itself was shot between the 16th to the 23 August 1999
The script was written by Richard Hellawell with input from Tolerance members; myself and Jeremy Walker were the film’s producers. In keeping with the humour we wanted the film to portray, we included film spoofs of Officer and a Gentleman, Star Wars, and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.
So, blog commentary coming up ... Tolerance starts and ...
45 seconds and we begin with our first film spoof, Star Wars, when the film starts with the standard Star Wars opening crawl. Instead of detailing a rebel attack on the evil empire lead by Darth Vader it tells u about the Tolerance group and what you can expect to see over the next 25 mins
Tumblr media
Tolerance uses all original music from a number of film and TV shows, raided from my music collection. You can find a complete playlist of all the music used in Tolerance here The soundtrack totals 32 mins of music ihttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ye8KvYKn9-0&list=PLPMadem14HDA4VfaekTC3gszEtwWfyGLQ
The Soundtrack we created for the Tolerance film will be covered in a new 2 Part blog called Thank you for the Music .
1 minute 22 seconds with the Star Wars music still playing, we get a nice opening shot of our leading man, David Smith, fast asleep, who plays our hero Robert clutching a book about the latest Star Wars film, The Phantom Menace (episode I), with his wheelchair close by.
Tumblr media
David Smith (www.davidsmithactor.co.uk) has gone on to do some great things in the acting world appearing in episodes of Moving On for the BBC, Emmerdale for ITV, and the film Electricity. I think he gives a great performance in our film and I would love to work with him again someday.
Please note: unless mentioned in the commentary, all the actors in Tolerance are non-wheelchair users. Tolerance members did insist that all members of the cast and crew should use wheelchairs to get the full experience, before, during, and in some cases after filming was complete.
Deleted scene
The opening of the film was going to be quite different is detailed in the original script.
Scene 3: Princess Leia Dream Sequence
The first deleted scene was the first of the intended film spoofs, taking off the popular science fiction film, Star Wars. In the finished film, there is a Star Wars homage, but the director, Richard Hellawell, shot it differently from the script. In 1999 when we were filming, there was no CGI, nor did we have the budget for anything out of the ordinary!
Robert is in a Star Fighter ready to fire his thermo bombs into the Death Star. Dissolve to Robert, who receives a medal from Princess Leia, but she is not Princess Leia, she is Robert’s girlfriend, Julie.
Interestingly some of the deleted scenes were included in the props list  The Star Wars dream sequence for example has the following list attached to it Star Wars Footage blue screen equipment fighter pilot clothing medal Princess Leia dress
Tumblr media
1 minute 47 seconds After the introduction of our leading man, we get the introduction of our leading lady, Claire Abbot, playing Julie. Like David Smith, Claire gives a great performance and I would love to meet her again. If you can help me find Claire, I would be most grateful, as I have not been able to find out any information about what she is doing now. Sadly, this is a recurring theme in Tolerance.
The use of Perfect Day is a romantic theme in the film. I wanted to use the all star Children in Need version, but Richard Hellawell went with the original Lou Read version. I have to admit in hindsight that I think this was the better choice.
Tumblr media
2 minutes
Julie Fountain plays Julie’s mother and she would also appear in the party scene at the end of the film. She has worked on many TV programmes and is a lecturer and acting coach. (www.linkedin.com/in/julie-fountain-50968226/?trk=public-profile-join-page)
The scenes where we see Robert and Julie at home were shot at different houses, belonging to the mums of Tolerance members, Liam Centino and Gemma Blagbrough. These shots were recorded on the first day of the shoot. On the 16th of August Unfortunately, it did not go well; we had awful weather; we were nervous; and filming overran because somebody kept ruining the take with his laughing, not naming names.
The shooting schedule also notes how many pages of script we had to shoot each day on that first day we only shot the first 4 pages of the film but it seemed to take forever
If you wondering how long a typical filming day was like on the film the first day of filming started at 830am in the morning and we were still shooting at 7pm that day proved to be an exception to the rule most shooting days started at 7 in the morning
The shooting schedule also has the word Skel written on it most notably in the scenes shot at the Worklink office and town sequences. This indicates that a Skeleton Crew was used in film terms that means a small crew of people required to get up early in a morning, to shoot scenes in a location where a few or no members of public are about to interrupt them a typical Skeleton Crew will include the following people
Tumblr media
Director of Photography Directors of photography are responsible for the photographic heart of a production.
They read the screenplay and work closely with the director to discuss the look and feel of a film.
Each shot is marked up for focus and framing by the focus puller and then the DoP oversees the lighting of the set for the first take.
Make Up/Hair
In film and TV drama, hair and make-up designers help actors portray their characters by using hair and make-up to create a look.
In pre-production, they work closely with the director to understand the style of the story.
Production Assistant Helps prepare the set with lights, props, equipment etc.Assisting costume designers, directors, camera people and other crew members. Printing and distributing daily paperwork (e.g. scripts, call sheets)
Location Audio (Sound Recordist) Sound recordists work intimately, fitting personal mics and monitoring
the sound output on all on-screen talent and contributors.
They communicate with all members of the production and crew, especially camera operators and directors.
Gaffer
During filming, they work out the positioning of the lights and fastest way to change the lighting setups between shots.
Gaffers mediate between the DoP and the rest of the lighting crew.
They're also responsible for safety and need to comply with the law on electricity, driving and employment.
Grips his responsibility is to build and maintain all the equipment that supports cameras.
This equipment, which includes tripods, dollies, tracks, jibs, cranes, and static rigs,
is constructed of delicate yet heavy duty parts requiring a high level of experience to operate and move.
2 minutes 41 seconds Julie’s sister, Mary, appears asking for her cup of tea. Mary was played by Laura Brown, sister of Tolerance member, Sarah Brown. Both Sarah and Laura moved back to Newcastle with their parents about a year after the film was shot, but please get in touch if you read this !* Footage from this scene was used to highlight the issue of Family and Relationships in the Tolerance film

My commentary will continue in part 2, which will look at the aspect of the film dealing with transport.

I would like to hear your list of Lyle Rath things that make you sad/makes him hot 👀 I'm very new to oneyplays stuff and I've taken a liking to the lad
there’s a lot of weird crossovers it’s up to you to decide what’s sexy and what’s upsetting:
- he described himself as rogue-like, which according to him means he looks dangerous, like he might steal from your house if you leave him alone and like he carries a weapon at all times. Now that might be a red flag, but I like red flags (source: animal punch fun with shippedge)
- back in like 2012 he used to like. Hardly shower and idk that’s both kinda sad and kinda hot (source: swaggalaggin)
- he’s said he’s not gay and has set many boundaries for what he considers too gay, he would break these boundaries (with Kyle and Phil specifically) all the time. (Source: exstream, it’s all overwatch now, squeeg the friendship hammer, gay science, swaggalaggin)
- on the topic of not being gay: he’s made sure to make people aware if he was gay he’d be a top, unless it was with Phil after a few years he said he would and I quote “take turnsies“ with Phil (source: it’s all overwatch now, squeeg the friendship hammer, swaggalaggin)
- Phil is the other host of swaggalaggin his podcast from 2012/2013 and season 2 got privated during the unlisted video purge
- he can’t cry, his dad used to laugh at him when he cried as a kid so now he vomits whenever he like. Needs to cry. (source: talked about in swaggalaggin s2 I could source this if HE UNPRIVATED IT)
- for a long time he couldn’t keep any weight on, he can now though and by god does he looks good with it (source: swaggalaggin seasons 1 and 2)
- in his final lootcrate video the implication was that he doesn’t regularly kill people, which is an odd implication for someone that jokes so much about killing people (this doesn’t need sourced it’s not really info)
- Kyle is a childhood friend of his :)! He also edits for oneyplays (he’s CameraColossus) and you can hear them talking about being gay little high school/middle school friends in Lyle’s ex-stream, and if the vod is still up his latest stream postgame recharge (sources provided within info)
- there’s a playlist of his twitch streams that have been saved, it’s titled Lyle mcdouchebag streams and the best ones are overplayed, super gash smashers, back with the boys, squeeg the friendship hammer and it’s all overwatch now (source: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL68_BxAB-jz70Zt1KL-gnQJRj3oVF9RIT )
- he likes to make a lot of jokes about being sexually attracted to corpses, as far back as 2012, including in episode 5 of swaggalaggin where they show genuine legitimate gore for about a minute and another episode before it where Lyle said he freaked out his tattoo artist by asking if a girl that got killed recently‘s body was still there because the girl was hot (source: swaggalaggin season 1)
- has said the phrase “when I’m at my most suicidal” unironically (source: overplayed)
- he’s half Puerto-Rican and at one point called himself “the freakin Rican” during an episode of squeeg so just remember that and keep it in your heart (source: squeeg, I can’t find the video but he also said it when playing Star Wars game where you are storm trooper with someone)
- bonus Kyle info because he’s packaged in: Kyle has a vague attraction to men (this is not a joke) (source: back with the boys)
- there are multiple videos Lyle‘s made where he either kills other people or himself (source: MOTEW unchartable, the last lootcrate video, pregame discharge, probably more I’m forgetting)
- this isn’t info but I think about it a lot: he’s vaguely implied self harm a couple times but never outright said it, don’t take this is as fact I just wanted to mention it (source: swaggalaggin s1 for the most part)
- was somewhat of an alcoholic through like 2011-2016-ish (source: ex-stream, swaggalaggin s1/2)
- for a hot minute, Phil assumes because he lived on mashed up oranges and vodka for a few days, he would cum black, which means there was likely blood in his cum (source: swaggalaggin episode 1 season 1)
- he used to live in a slightly renovated auto garage! He didn’t have a proper door and outside of his garage door was a gate, it was rat infested and this is where he one hit killed that rat with a belt buckle, he sent a picture of said murder to Zach, they discuss this in the (switch) Luigi’s mansion series (source: swaggalaggin and Luigi’s mansion 3)
- his dad hit him, he doesn’t view this as that bad of a thing, he thinks if he didn’t he wouldn’t have turned out funny (source: super gash smashers)
- has a habit of talking about fucking clones of himself, a common theme in pregame discharge specifically (it crops up in other places too) (source: pregame discharge, exstream, oneyplays)
- he said he has a type for short and thicc girls with a sense of humour, Monica his girlfriend fits into this type very well (source: it’s all overwatch now)
that’s all that’s off the top of my head right now but I could probably dump more here later

💙{SUKKA PLAYLIST}💚
So in my fandom career, one of the first stages of commitment to a ship is dedicating a music playlist to them. As you may have guessed, Sukka is no exception.
Out of all the playlists I've made, Sukka's was definitely the most fun to make, as they are just so aesthetically pleasing. 🤧
I have 11 songs total and I recommend copying the songs and insert them into a playlist on whatever music service you use.
Good Times ~All Time Low
(you can see my post for this song here)
{"I never wanna leave this sunset town, but one day the time may come. And I'll take it at your word, and carry on. I'll hate the goodbye, but I wont forget the good times."}
Reread those lyrics. I dare you to tell me that isn't the fire nation attack scene in "The Warriors of Kyoshi".
Desert Moon ~ Mena Massoud & Naomi Scott
{"'Cause it waits for you there, and if you see it too, I can find my way to you."}
So the graphics I vision for this song are sorta based around Book 3 Sukka. I headcanon that Sokka would look up to Yue for reassurance when feeling lost, such as when Suki was imprisoned and he had no idea where she was. Also, post-Book 3 when they are in their long distance relationship, I know they would miss each other like crazy. Something I see comforting them is the fact that they see the same moon.
White Horse ~ Taylor Swift
{"I was a dreamer before you went and let me down, now its too late for you and your white horse to come around."}
{"And there you are on your knees. Begging for forgiveness, begging for me."}
Now we all know Suki is our resident independent- badass- queen who doesn't need anyone to look out for her, especially a man. I thought that this song was a good parallel to when she was fed up with Sokka's sexist bs in "The Warriors of Kyoshi". Like I can imagine her having to hear this from so many people around her growing up, and to hear it from someone she showed interest in must be disappointing. Not a super happy rec, but a necessary one nonetheless.
Even When/ The Best Part ~ Olivia Rodrigo & Joshua Basset
{"The best part is knowing there's something in my dreams that always makes me smile, its you. The best part is knowing there's someone in my life that makes it all worth while, its you."}
{"Even when you and I are worlds apart, I hold you in my heart. Even when I'm a thousand miles away, I wish that I could stay with you."}
So oddly enough, I actually find enjoyment in 'High School Musical: The Musical: The Series'. But in the scene, the main couple sang this to each other when they couldn't be together for Valentine's day, and when I first heard it, my head immediately went to Sokka and Suki. Seeing that they had a long distance relationship for a decent amount of time and have many individual responsibilities, they are bound to miss some holidays and events. But even through that, they know they are the most important parts of each others lives.
Like I'm Gonna Lose You ~ Meghan Trainor & John Legend
{"So I'll kiss you longer babe, every chance that I get. I'll make the most of the minutes and love with no regret. Let's take our time to say what we want, use what we got before its all gone. 'Cause no, we're not promised tomorrow."}
I really love this song for them because after losing Yue, Sokka came to appreciate time, and didn't want to waste a moment with Suki. He realized that death can be sudden and real, which was why he was so protective of Suki during 'The Serpent's Pass'.
If I Can't Be With You ~ R5
{"I'd rather stay with you, if I had to choose. Baby you're the greatest, and I got everything to lose. And I just wanna be with you. And I can never get enough. Baby, give it all up I'd give it all up, if I cant be with you."}
I thought this song fit really well, and this lyric in particular reminds me of the failed escape attempt in 'The Boiling Rock Pt. 1'. Suki was willing to give up the concept of freedom if it meant staying to wait for Hakoda with Sokka.
Thinking Out Loud ~ Ed Sheeran
{"'Cause, honey, your soul could never grow old, it's evergreen. And, baby, your smile's forever in my mind and memory. I'm thinking 'bout how people fall in love in mysterious ways. And maybe it's all part of a plan. Well, I'll just keep on making the same mistakes, hoping that you'll understand.
That, baby, now take me into your loving arms. Kiss me under the light of a thousand stars. Place your head on my beating heart. I'm thinking out loud, and maybe we found love right where we are."}
Another headcanon service. I can just picture them leisurely dancing to this in the living room when they're married.
Stuck With You ~ Ariana Grande & Justin Bieber
{"So, go ahead and drive me insane. Baby, run your mouth, I still wouldn't change being stuck with you, stuck with you, stuck with you."}
I thought this would be a good choice because as we see in the show, Suki will humor Sokka's jokes every once in a while versus just brushing them off. I can also see her being like "Hmm, you're an idiot, but I love it. I'm keeping you."
Gotta Find You ~ Joe Jonas
{"I need to try to get to where you are. Could it be you're not that far? You're the voice I hear inside my head, the reason that I'm singing. I need to find you, I gotta find you."}
Tumblr media
Enough said.👏
Lift Me Up ~ The Afters
{"You know my heart is heavy, and the hurt is deep. But when I feel like giving up, you're reminding me. That we all fall down sometimes, When I hit the ground,
You lift me up when I am weak, your arms wrap around me. Your love catches me, so I'm letting go. You lift me up when I can't see, your heart's all that I need. Your love carries me, so I'm letting go."}
So I really love this song and feel that it could be used for literally any atla ship or even atla as a whole, due to the theme and aesthetic (might mess around and make an edit😏). One of my favorite things about Sukka is how supportive they are of each other, and how easily they make each other happy. They've seen each other at low points, they've been on death row, but through that they were still there cheering each other on.
Lucky ~ Jason Mraz & Colbie Caillat
{"They don't know how long it takes, waiting for a love like this. Every time we say goodbye, I wish we had one more kiss. I'll wait for you, I promise you, I will."}
I think this pretty much sums up their time together during 'The Serpent's Pass'. They were apart for so long-and with the war, had no reason to really believe they'd see each other again. But then by chance they were brought together again, revealed their feelings, only to have to split up again. But through that, they didn't let the distance bother them, as they stayed committed to each other.
{"Lucky we're in love in every way. Lucky to have stayed where we have stayed. Lucky to be coming home someday."}
Well, we all know they're hopelessly in love, but I feel like this highlights one of the most important aspects of them; no matter how long or far apart they are, they always come running home to each other.
Well that was defiantly a doozy😅. Thanks to those who stuck around this far!

Do you have any headcanons on veterans x reader on quarantine lockdown headcanons. Baking, Reading, Exercising?
Ohhhh I have so many! Thank you for this ask ❤️ One of these days I’ll master the art of answering a head canon question quickly and with shorter answers. But today is not the day! There’s a few nsfw bits under the cut. This is over 3k words....how??
Mike
Mike is fond of long lay-ins, it’s what he lives for at the weekend. He loves you so much and enjoys nothing more than being comfy and snuggly under a duvet with you. Eating breakfast, watching Netflix, just chilling and enjoying one another’s company. So during lock down there’s gonna be a lot of time in comfy PJ’s lazing around in bed.
Mike loves cooking and cooking shows! The two of you have a date night once a week where you cook together. You always light some candles, listen to jazz and have a glass of wine or two while cooking. One week you try making your own sushi, the next it’s Jamaican curry, then it’s pizza night! Trying new things is something you both love (both in and out of the bedroom *cough* more on that later.
When restrictions are eased a little and you’re allowed to sit outside/drive for exercise, the two of you take a long countryside drive together and find a quiet secluded spot where you can sit and have a picnic and watch the clouds go by.
I see Mike as a guitar kinda guy, so he’ll teach you if you don’t play and if you do, the two of you will enjoy spending some time writing songs together and playing along to your favourite rock and indie tunes.
You enjoy watching live acoustic gigs and concerts which are being streamed by artists and comedians etc. Mike encourages you to get dressed up with him, you have drinks while watching and often end up dancing as if you were at a gig in person.
Binge listening to podcasts together ‘The Magnus Archive,’ ‘Welcome to Nightvale’ and ‘MaMbBam’ being favourites.
Star-gazing. Sitting outdoors at night, during the day the two of you will spend time in your garden but it’s night time you really enjoy it the most. Sitting outside on a blanket and with another over you, you make sure all the lights inside are turned off so you can enjoy watching the stars, moon, planets, satellites etc above you. You often have a glass of wine or a cocktail as you sit out there, sometimes you fall asleep in Mike’s arms so he’ll carry you up to bed.
Finally Mike is very good at giving you personal space, while he loves taking up new hobbies with you and spending time doing things you love together, he also knows you both need your space. It makes the time you do spend together so much sweeter.
Erwin
Even though you don’t need to go out to work, Erwin is still up early. When he wakes he showers and then prepares for the day by making you both a delicious breakfast. Think poached eggs, grapefruit, french toast, yoghurt and fruit etc. He likes listening to the radio over watching TV first thing in the morning so you have that on for a bit.
You enjoy daily workouts together (with Saturday or Sunday off). Erwin takes them unsurprisingly seriously, however, he does make them fun. The two of you will have little competitions with one another and Erwin creates a workout playlist for you - it’s an eclectic mix and includes songs that you both end up singing along to.
Erwin loves to play the Piano but due to his work he only usually touches it a few times a month if that. With lockdown he starts playing daily, there’s a few times when you wake up and he’s already practising - it really is beautiful. Sometimes if he knows you’re watching he may stop playing, or at least change what he’s playing to something you know so you can sing along or join in. If you’re quiet though you can stand in the door for 5-10 minutes without him realising and he’ll continue to play classical music.
As well as the home workouts you try to go out once a week for a run, as much as Erwin just wants to get on he would never leave you behind if you’re struggling to keep up and will wait for you (he’s a gentleman after all).
Canvas painting, sometimes Erwin struggles with getting out or showing his emotions, after doing virtual tours of art galleries online you suggest ordering a canvas, some acrylic paint and palette knives. It’s amazing the level of emotion you see pour out of yourself and Erwin onto the canvas, it’s incredibly therapeutic so you order more canvasses.
The two of you really enjoy binge watching documentary shows - you know the second Tiger King came out Erwin was all over that. There’s this side to Erwin that not everyone gets to see, or at least when they do it’s very rare. But during lockdown you get to experience it more frequently, he really does have a great sense of human and likes to have fun. While he enjoys documentaries about WW2, science (Unabomber: in his own words is also on the list) things like Tiger King, Dark Tourist and Louis Theroux docs are also a guilty pleasure.
The two of you will spend some evenings laying chess by candle light with a glass of whiskey.
Levi
I feel to say that you’ll be cleaning a lot is a little obvious and I actually think that for the most part Levi would prefer to crack on with that on his own - it gives him peace of mind and it’s something he has control over. He enjoys it
Together however, expect DIY Projects or painting/decorating. There’s things the two of you have talked about doing for ages and never gotten round to, now you have the perfect excuse. From painting a feature wall in your living quarters to making a little step wooden step ladder for the garden that you can put potted plants on. The two of you use your time to get creative around the home.
Dancing - the form of fitness you decide to take up is dance. At first Levi scoffs at the idea but then when he realises what a work out it actually is and how much strength and flexibility is required for some of the tutorials you’re following, he’s game. The two of you end up choreographing a dance together - it’s super cute (and hot in places - oops)
You’re the kind of couple others are jealous of because you just work so well together, spending the perfect amount of time doing things together and apart.
Being a lover of tea, Levi decides to educate you on the many different types by subscribing to a ‘tea lovers’ subscription box. You take the time to sit with him and really enjoy each tea, just talking with no noise from the radio or TV.
Levi likes to put together tapas or cheese tasting boards, he chooses the food for the main, you put together a starter or dessert and pick the wine that goes with the flavours he’s mixing. Together it’s like a perfect harmony. You set the table, light candles, listen to jazz and it’s almost as if you’re at one of your favourite restaurants.
Watching Horror movies, you’ve probably seen every horror movie on Netflix, Amazon Prime etc. which is available to stream come the end of lockdown. Horror was actually how you met, you were at the cinema to see ‘Hereditary’ and none of your friends wanted to come with you so you went alone. Levi and his friends (the other vets) were in the same screen and sat next to you. So now Levi is strangely sentimental about horror movies. There’s cuddling up under blankets in the living room and plenty of popcorn along with movie themed cocktails.
Video calls to your friends, you do more of the talking but Levi sits by you throughout and occasionally joins in. He’s loathed to admit it but he really likes seeing everyone’s faces and hearing their voices.
Moblit
Moblit has a large collection of puzzles, a few were completed when he was younger but a lot of them aren’t. He used to get frustrated with them but always wanted to finish them so he could frame them and put them up around the house. When lockdown happened you think it’s the perfect opportunity for the two of you to work on them together and help him out. Turns out it’s actually a lot of fun and a pretty good was
Baking! You both love the Great British Bake Off, before lock-down you were always talking about how you wanted to give the recipes a try but of course something else always came along. Now lockdown is the perfect excuse to order some ingredients online and get baking! The kitchen often looks like a mess, Moblit gets flour on his face and even in his hair? You don’t know how it happens but you have a lot of fun doing it and hey what you bake usually turns out pretty good.
Subscribes to Disney+ the second it comes out - and the two of you binge watch your favourite Disney movies singing along to them (I get the impression Moblit would be a huge Hercules and Moana fan).
Watching Avengers Infinity War together and later on in the evening he turns to you and just says, “I love you 3000.”
Bike rides through the countryside (as long as it’s close to home of course and you can stay safe!)
You watch art shows together (like the still life drawing classes on TV or Grayson Perry’s art class). Shows which have been made specifically now for lockdown to help inspire people to take up new hobbies. Both of you are pretty inexperienced at art or drawing so you have a lot of fun watching the shows, following the instructions and seeing where your hand and pencil lead you. You both end up discovering your own unique style of drawing - this inevitably ends up doing a still life of one another (more on this later).
Hange
Hange really struggles with lockdown, it makes them feel pretty anxious and they hate not being able to be out and about exploring/doing their job/learning new things etc. So Hanji needs quite a bit of love and looking after, care packages for the two of you go a long way so you order nice things in the early days of lock down. Hanji’s eyes light up when you hand them what you’ve ordered.
Loads of gaming, you both enjoying exploring other worlds along with fantasy so everything from World of Warcraft, Skyrim, The Outer Worlds, Outer Wilds to the Final Fantasy games, The Witcher and Assassin’s Creed are all up your street. Sometimes you play alone, sometimes you watch one another play while reading magazines. Often when playing WOW you play together and share a mount, heading into raids together and working as a team. It’s not as good as being outside and exploring the world for real but it’s pretty close.
Loads of movie marathons with enough sweets to make you sick, especially the gummy kind like Haribo.
Hange - Arguments over who loves who more, it’s usually in the middle of a TV show that you’ve been really invested in but now with the impending end of the world, it’s so easy to get distracted. The ‘arguments’ usually end up in pillow fights and just laying in one another’s arms in silence.
Home made science experiments - yup, you knew this was coming. There’s so much you can try at home with simple house hold ingredients. Hange also orders kits online so you end up growing your own crystals (not the drug kind lol), making your own ‘volcano’, making slime, dying flowers etc. At first you rolled your eyes when Hanji suggested it but actually it turns out to be a lot of fun and it’s pretty interesting, so you end up learning something. Hanji also orders DIY Sweet kits which are as fun to make as they are to eat.
When it comes to heading outside to clap for key workers the two of you are gonna be dressed up to make the children smile. You’ll be banging pots and pans or possibly have a kazoo or tambourine.
Nanaba
There’s loads of Gardening, it’s something the two of you always liked but found you didn’t have the time you needed to commit to it as much as you’d have liked.
Cuddling on the grass in your garden, rolling around enjoying the sunshine and sun-bathing side by side.
The work out of choice for the two of you is yoga. You light incense and some candles as well as listening to mediation music and just take some time out to be alone with your thoughts - together. You both agree that stretching really helps you especially where you’re working from home, it’s so easy to get back ache!
The two of you love dancing
Nanaba decides to take up quilting and crochet. It’s something her mother and elder sister taught her how to do but is practically a forgotten hobby. You help one another to remember the basics and decide to make a giant patchwork quilt for your sofa. You work on it together so that there’s a part of both of you in it, you take inspiration from your garden and the world around you, even though it’s a lot smaller than it was before. If either of you prick your finger the other is there to kiss it better.
Preparing relaxing baths for one another, you enjoy much of the bath on your own but sometimes the other will sit on the toilet and read aloud or just come in for a chat. Lockdown makes you more open with one another than you were before.
Getting into bed early before the sun has set, you keep the curtains open so you can watch the sky turn orange. Plenty of time in bed means you have time to binge watch the latest TV shows and not feel guilty about it if you have work the next day.
Witchy things - tarot card readings, candle magic, little rituals in the garden and kitchen witch magic like making dandelion honey or moon spell cookies.
Below are a few nsfw thoughts (I didn’t write many but a couple kept bouncing around in my mind).
Erwin -
Sex first thing in the morning, the kind of lazy, sleepy sex that the two of you dream of having but never have time before work. Now, you do and Erwin intends to make the most of it.
Also shower sex, sometimes this follows the sex in the morning so by the time you finish work you’re already feeling tired. Often it follows the workouts you do and it doesn’t take either of you long to cum seeing as watching one another get sweaty and flex muscles - the tension is unbelievable.
If you get too distracted during the work day, either by Erwin or TV (or if you distract Erwin too much) they’ll be punishments in the form of spanking and rough sex from behind, hair pulling and all. It’s the first time you find yourself wanting to be punished.
Levi
Sex in spaces you’ve just cleaned, it’s sort of a punishment if you back-talk him as he’ll make you clean up afterwards. Secretly he loves dirtying the sheets, it’s almost like an ultimate fantasy for someone who is so clean and neat, but he really has to be in the right mood for that.
Lockdown is a chance for the two of you to explore some of the sexual fantasies you’ve discussed but never tried from light bondage (to start) and role-play.
Switching, in your relationship neither one of you is particularly the dominant or submissive one continuously, rather you enjoy switching, but when you are in the role you both take it seriously. Now you’re in lockdown and it’s easy to get bored, you both agree to really extent the roles on the day you’re both in the mood, you could lead Levi round on a leash and collar all afternoon and he won’t complain.
Mike
Checking in on you as you’re working and trying to convince you lunch break sex is definitely a thing that will help you concentrate on your important presentation in your afternoon video conference. But of course he leaves you a bit of a mess and without a minute to spare so you appear on camera looking like you’ve been dragged through a hedge backwards.
With Mike there’s also a lot of time to get creative in the bedroom, you have longer in the evening to take your time exploring one another and discovering new positions you’d never have thought possible.
When lockdown goes on much longer than anticipated Mike decides to turn up the creativity a notch. A rather large unmarked parcel arrives containing a latex bed sheet and sex swing, so you know you’re not going to be getting a lot of sleep for a while.
Moblit
Kisses that last for hours, the kind that start innocently and slowly you find yourself getting worked up and wanting more but Moblit continues to tease with those kisses and will pretend he has no idea why you’re worked up. However he does go weak at the knees if you praise him so that’s usually the way to get what you want.
The still life drawings of one another start off fully clothed and very quickly become nude studies. You can only take it seriously for so long before he pounces on you or you on him and it’s like ‘that’ scene from Titanic within minutes.
Endless, almost excruciating foreplay.
Hanji
Has always liked to have fun in bedroom, with lockdown it’s more of an excuse to dress up and play around, I’m thinking teacher & student or Doctor/nurse & patient. Hanji really gets into the role.
Science experiments continue to the bedroom, you decide to give the whole electro-stim thing a go.
Also with the DIY sweet kits there’s also a little left, so popping candy, expanding foam candy and more are used to adorn your bodies - it doesn’t stay on long as the combination of candy and sex is too irresistible to leave alone.
Nanaba
Sex outdoors, your garden is pretty secluded. It was something you talked about doing a lot but always found your weekends were too busy with friends and others that you just never got round to it. There’s grass stains on your knees and your clothes and you’d both wear them with pride outside the house if you could.
Bath tub sex, even if it’s a little uncomfortable it’s so intimate and personal that you don’t care how much of a mess you make or how many bruises you end up with. Lockdown hits you both hard mentally and bath tub sex is a way of feeling better and cleansed.
There’s also a chance for some sex magic which involves wax play, again, something new you’d thought about for a while and now you both just wanted something to make you feel alive.

And me and @freckledpianoman are back with more Beth Chapel content! Continuing from this post, here’s even more headcanons about our favourite Dr Mid-Nite:
Beth is nearsighted and started wearing glasses when she was three and a half. Bridget started noticing that her daughter kept squinting all the time and eventually took her to an eye doctor, attributing Beth needing glasses so early to all the times that she hid under the covers with a flashlight and read late into the night instead of sleeping
Her prescription is really strong and while her glasses correct most of her vision, she still needs accommodations like enlarged and high contrast texts and other visual aids
Chuck eventually becomes another accommodation since he acts as a cross between telescopic and magnifying glasses and a talking watch
She’s fluent in French thanks to her grandma Beatrice’s influence and she can carry a conversation in Spanish (she picked it up from Bridget, who often talks with her patients in Spanish) and Norwegian. That last language throws people off when they first hear about it, but it comes in handy when four-year-old Pieter Cross and his family (who don’t speak much English) move to Blue Valley from Trondheim, Norway
Yolanda grumbles about not being able to talk to Beth in Spanish class whenever she’s home sick from school because she's the one decent conversation partner she has in that class
Rick often practices translating for his French class with Beth. Once he goofed and said “madame le docteur”. And poor Beth was close to shaking him and going, “Rick, that's wrong on so many levels”
He knows by the incredulous look on her face that he’s all sorts of wrong and he blushes all embarrassed. But later he mistranslates on purpose just to see her adorable reactions
She wants to pick up more languages eventually (she’s deciding if she wants to take both Mandarin and Arabic in college like her dad did) and is currently learning ASL
Beth is a Star Trek fan thanks to her dad’s influence. She and James would watch reruns of Deep Space Nine while she was growing up and it was their way of bonding. While that tradition didn’t happen as often when Beth started high school, she and Yolanda (who had watched Voyager with her brother and cousins) eventually start a tradition of watching Star Trek Discovery
Beth and Yolanda’s love for Star Trek is often a point of contention with Rick and Courtney, who are both Star Wars fans. It’s been the subject of a lot of arguments about what to watch for JSA marathons. Pat is usually the tie breaker
Beth learned how to garden from her grandma Beatrice, who raises African violets in her rooftop garden. Beth’s backyard isn’t big enough for a garden so instead she keeps all sorts of plants in her room, including little teacup succulents on her bedroom windowsill and in honeycomb shelves
While her backyard’s too small for a garden, there’s a pink dogwood tree and she loves reading and having picnics under it when it’s in bloom. In the summer Beth makes her own butterfly feeders and hang them from the tree and watch the butterflies gather
She grew up listening to Schoolhouse Rock thanks to her dad, who would play their songs in the kitchen whenever he made breakfast on Saturday mornings while she was growing up. Even now, Beth sings along to them whenever she hears them and Chuck starting adding them to karaoke mode, including her favourites “Three is a Magic Number”, “The Tale of Mr Morton”, and “The Energy Blues”
When she was in middle school, she started using the melody of Schoolhouse Rock songs to memorize things like country names and the periodic table. She used the latter to help Rick memorize different elements for his chem class. Yolanda actually caught Rick softly singing to himself at his locker when he was searching for his notes for one last read through
“Beth got you to sing? Willingly?” “I wasn't singing, you’re hearing things.”
Courtney is weirded out by the fact that Beths texts with Mike of all people, but it's mostly through gifs, emojis, and random memes. She has no idea what they even talk about, saying that Beth texts with Mike more often than she does with Rick, much to the latter’s annoyance. In reality Beth and Mike talk about robotics competitions, the latest episode of whatever they were binging (this week was Julie and the Phantoms), and their ongoing bet on when Courtney and Yolanda will finally get together
If Beth wins, Mike has to help upgrade her costume and if he wins, she owes him an ice cream cake
“It's like their own little nerd language, it makes no sense.”
Her style icon when she was little was Ms Frizzle. Beth thought that Ms Frizzle’s themed dresses and jewellery were so cool and she wanted to dress up like her. She still loves Ms Frizzle’s style and you can see the influence it has on Beth’s fashion from bright colours, unique patterns, and quirky jewellery
Beth has a special section in her closet for Ms Frizzle like outfits that she wears to the children’s library she volunteers at. It makes her very popular with the kids there
She actually dressed up as Ms Frizzle for Halloween in seventh grade
Despite being on opposite sides, Beth and Cindy have a begrudging respect for each other similar to Betty and Wilhelmina’s relationship on Ugly Betty, Beth being the JSA member that Cindy tolerates the most
Cindy begrudgingly thinks that she does know a thing or two about fashion because she often upcycles clothes. Courtney’s surprised that Beth’s still alive after she said that Cindy dresses like an evil PTA mom within earshot, though she did kidnap Beth a few times for a shopping spree
“Get in loser, we’re going shopping!” “Did you just quote Mean Girls?”
The first time they had a standoff, Cindy went “please, I’m Japanese, you’re Black, we’re not talking around this thing like a couple of dull white people”
Cindy once called Rick a feral raccoon and smirked when it made Beth accidentally burst out laughing
While Beth is more than confident with her personal style, but she’s still very new to makeup in general. Yolanda and Artemis (even Cindy much to everyone’s shock) have taken it upon themselves to help experiment with makeup and find out what she likes. Beth immediately knows that she doesn’t like mascara, even as Yolanda scolds her to stay still while she’s trying to put mascara on her
“You’re making it seem like I’m torturing you.” “Your superhero costume has claws, that doesn’t exactly scream safe.” “I’ll have you know I’m very practiced with my claws, now stay still!”
Beth likes the lipsticks and glosses much better, she likes the different colours and how it feels on her lips
She has to get used to the feeling of makeup on her face in general, but she doesn’t mind it and she’s shocked when she looks in the mirror. It’s still very much her, but it's like she’s glowing. She can’t stop smiling and the girls all look at her fondly
And they also exchange knowing looks, knowing that Rick is going to lose his mind
She did a history report on Bessie Coleman in middle school and she eventually drew inspiration for her Dr Mid-Nite costume from looking at photos of Bessie’s pilot outfit
Beth and her mom often did ceramics classes when she was a kid. They weren’t very good at it at first, but the little lopsided knick knacks they made always made them laugh. Beth and Bridget got better over the years with Beth painting colours and patterns on whatever her mom helped her make before they went into the kiln. She thought they would be plain otherwise and Bridget agreed with her
While ceramics classes have since stopped, they still use the honeycomb mugs and planters that they made and painted when Beth was in middle school. Bridget uses one for the aloe vera plant she keeps in her office at the hospital
Beth is allergic to pineapple. She found out during a school trip in third grade when Henry offered some of his fruit salad and she ended up with a swollen face and tongue, which really freaked Artemis and Cindy out. Yolanda and the villain kids ended up taking care of her until the ambulance came and Beth jokes that it was the one time the JSA and ISA kids worked together on something
She now carries an epipen in her backpack and Rick has taken to carrying a backup one in his jacket in case Beth can’t get to her backpack in time
She had a stargazing phase that she never grew out of. Her parents got her a mini telescope for her fifth birthday and Bridget started teaching her about the solar system before Beth started learning about constellations on her own. Bridget jokes that if her daughter hadn’t been set on becoming a doctor, she would’ve gone into astrophysics
Beth still has a telescope set up by her bedroom window. Sometimes when she has trouble sleeping and she’s not in the mood to read, she’ll look for constellations through the telescope while Chuck chimes in with little known star facts
She also has a starry globe nightlight and a constellation globe
She and Rick sometimes have stargazing “dates” out on her back porch. They curl up together in a patio chair with midnight snacks while they watch meteor showers. Sometimes Yolanda and Courtney will join them, curled up together in the other patio chair
Beth and Courtney often have karaoke nights at the Pit Stop after Pat souped up Barbara’s old karaoke machine. The usual playlist includes fun 80s and 90s jams as well as modern songs like Bruno Mars, Lizzo, and Janelle Monae. Yolanda often joins them for girl group songs (Little Mix is a favourite), even though she protests that she’s not much of a singer when she’s not singing Selena songs
Rick gets roped into doing a song too, much to his dismay. Courtney pouts and complains that he has to because there’s an unspoken rule that everyone has to sing
“I don't sing, dammit.” “Oh really, are you forgetting about that little ditty you were singing before your chem test?”
Beth sees how nervous Rick is and decides to go easy on him, finding a slow, bluesy song that he can keep up with and assuring him that even if he can’t croon those long deep notes, everyone will cheer him on. He ends up giving the best performance of the night, shocking the girls and impressing them all
He blushes when he sees Beth looking at him all starry eyed
When Beth was growing up, her family would have game night every Thursday and they were always old fashioned board games like Clue, Scrabble, and Pictionary. Whenever they would play Clue, Beth would always choose to be Miss Scarlett while her dad would switch between Professor Plum and Colonel Mustard. Beth could never beat her mom at Scrabble and it often ended up with Beth’s chemistry words versus Bridget’s medical terms
While game nights have since stopped, James will sometimes have Beth join him for a card game at three or four in the morning after he comes back from a business trip. He taught her how to play games like crazy eights, gin rummy, and cribbage when she was in middle school and it’s now their way of catching up after he comes back from travelling
Both her parents are only children. James’ family was originally from California before he moved to Nebraska for work while Bridget’s family are of Louisiana Creole descent and hail from Omaha. Beth is quite close to Bridget’s side of the family, especially with her second cousin Delphine’s family. Beth sometimes helps look after Delphine’s daughter Eliana whenever she and her husband are in town
Rick once mistook Eliana for Beth’s baby, hilarity ensued
Beth has a love for animals and since the fandom has collectively decided that Beth is a Disney Princess, she has a particular talent for being an accidental animal tamer. During a mission, three of the ISA’s attack dogs made a beeline for her and attacked her with doggie kisses instead of doing their job
The ISA are torn between being pissed (“when the hell did Mid-Nite become an animal tamer?”) and confused. Sportsmaster is vaguely impressed and takes it as a challenge
Later they tried scaring Beth with a python, which only really worked on Yolanda (“oh my god, what is that?”) while Beth just boops the snake on its snout. The snake swooned. So did Rick
After Rick and Yolanda recover from the shock, they look at the trio of attack dogs follow Beth all the way to the Pit Stop and go “we’re not keeping you”. Rick just hopes that the trio are the only attack dogs that follow her back home. He wishes that he had been more specific because he was not expecting an actual maned wolf suddenly coming up and sniffing all over Beth during a visit to the Dugan-Whitmores’ cabin
“What the fuck, where did that come from and why is it all over Beth?!”
It turns out that Beth didn’t realize that she had a cookie in one of her pockets and the maned wolf caught a whiff of it and was now trying to find it. The way it sniffs her is ticklish and she’s laughing the entire time
Once the maned wolf brought over a friend to see Beth and Courtney goes, “aww, he met another–oh my god, that’s a panther!” The panther also wanted one of Beth’s treats and it swooped in between her and Rick and started pawing at her like a spoiled kitten
Rick picked Beth up and carried her inside because “we can’t trust her outside anymore”

Where, besides Tumblr, can people find you doing fannish things? (Obviously only mention sites and usernames you actually want to be found at. Don’t expose your secret identities on my account.)
What other names have you gone by on these platforms, including Tumblr, if any?
When did you join the IT fandom? And what got you into fandom, to begin with?
What are your favorite ships, or characters, if any, and why? What do they mean to you?
In what ways do you participate in fandom? (ex. Posting memes, reblogging/commenting on content, writing fanfic, making fanart, creating fanmixes, etc.)
Do you have any in-fandom inspirations? Other members of the community that drive you? (And if you have the time/energy, in what ways do they inspire you?)
Name and link some of your favorite works, please!
Do you have any works of your own that you feel particularly proud of, or wish more people would’ve consumed? Please provide links if possible.
Have you ever participated in a fannish event (ie. IT Week, a fic Big Bang) or applied to be a part of a fanzine? If so, which ones, and can you please link them?
Without any form of bashing or lashing out, what is something you feel this fandom is missing?
I'm calicofiction everywhere, I don't have any secret identities lol. For fannish stuff specifically I really only use this account and AO3.
I've had sooooo many tumblr urls adjkjcs. The only other non-referential name I had was penlex, though.
I saw ITch1 in theaters (incidentally I also lived by a river and had bright orange hair at the time, which was.......... An Experience), but I didn't really enter The Fandom™ until setting ITch2a a few months ago. I didn't... know this would happen to me. (It was only a clown, how did it end up like this. it was only a clown...)
I started in fandom by talking to my older sister about how I thought Ginny Weasley should have been in Slytherin, and she hooked me up with ye olden fan sites.
The one character that I can always come back to is Bruce Wayne, but the character I identify with the most of all time is Taako from The Adventure Zone: Balance. I've even considered writing to Justin to tell him how deeply Taako affected me and made me kind of stop feeling like my personality was an unfortunate consequence of my circumstances lmfao.
I'm a Jack of all Trades (*jeb bush voice* please laugh). I do fic, moodboards/aesthetics, traditional art, mixes/playlists, headcanons/shitposts... Mostly fic though.
I'm loving Milo @clownjizz's kink content right now, Kels @lethimrunsonia is a sweetheart and one of my best friends, (other fandoms now), Nathaniel @transbucky and Jess @sequencefairy keep me motivated to make Good Stuff (theirs highly recommended if you like MCU, SPN, BFU), and Rachel @dykerory keeps me from taking It All too seriously lmao (DCTV, Star Wars).
I have 500+ Bookmarks on AO3! I also reblog fics I like here under the tag /fic-rec, and I make a new recommendation every Thursday on my /interlude post.
I'm on mobile so I don't wanna do a lot of linking and formatting BUT you can find all my fic on my AO3 or in my /fic tag. I've done a few fic themed answers that highlight some particular works.
I participated in kink memes and gift exchanges during my LiveJournal days. I'm sorry to say those pages are lost to time.
I don't necessarily feel like the IT fandom is missing anything... but I do think fandom in general, including this one, adheres way too much to normative ideals when attempting to represent queer relationships. Not only is there so often an uncomfortable replication of heterosexual gender roles in every rating level, but there is also the prevalence of cohabitation, legal marriage, and kids as the ultimate happy ending for a couple. It's just plain not the case, and I long to see more relationships like the ones I participate in and witness as a queer person (and especially as a queer man) in real life represented in fanfic that purports itself to be About Us.

Animorphs Playlist: Rachel
I mentioned in my Marco songs post that I had lists for all the Animorphs and a couple people asked for more, so here we go.
“Woman King” by Iron and Wine
Blackbird claw, raven wing Under the red sunlight
Hundred years, hundred more Someday we may see a Woman king, sword in hand Swing at some evil and bleed
Starting off, just the title of this song screams Rachel to me, and the hits just keep coming.  The whole song (heck, the whole EP) is about female power and presence.  The lyrics blend the violent and peaceful, the stern and sensitive, the mundane and the exceptional, just like Rachel, who refuses to be written off as a beauty queen or a berserker or a top student or a second mother but combines all of those and more into her character.
“Playing With Fire” by Them Lost Boys ft. Lexi Forche
The air is thick with smoke and I can’t breathe All your secrets pouring in and out of me Shut your mouth, lock the door, throw away the key You can’t be messing with me.  Don’t be messing with me!
This one runs on pure emotional association.  The aggressive beats intercut by more contemplative sections, slow builds and sharp drops, and the repeated refrain of “Don’t be messing with me” all sonically and essentially capture Rachel.
“Magus Perde” by Jethro Tull
Tough are the soles that tread the knife's edge Break the circle, stretch the line, call upon the devil Bring the gods, the gods' own fire In the conflict revel
A running theme among many of my choices will be more thematic or emotional connections (as seen in the previous entry).  I could probably articulate the connections given enough time and words, but that would be dissecting the proverbial frog.  Instead I’ll just point out that besides the lyrics listed above (which are pure Rachel Warrior Princess), this song is the closing track to the album Passion Play, and in keeping with the historical origins of the concept is a meditation on life, death, and rebirth.
“Winterborn” by Cruxshadows
Discard regret That in this debt A better world is made That children of a newer day might remember and avoid our fate And in the fury of this darkest hour We will be your light You've asked me for my sacrifice And I am Winterborn
About the only good thing to come out of reading 2/3 of Ghost several years ago (Oh John Ringo, No!) was being introduced to this song.  This is a song about willing sacrifice in defense of others.  More than that, the verses are from the perspective of a higher power providing reassurance and comfort, while the chorus is the statement of the person sacrificing themselves.  The parallels don’t just jump out at you, they club you over the head and go through your pockets for loose change, so I’ll leave it there.
“The March of Cambreadth” by Heather Alexander
Midnight mare and blood red roan Fight to Keep this Land Your Own Sound the horn and call the cry How Many of Them Can We Make Die!
This might be the least nuanced association here: when it comes to fighting, Rachel was the Goddess of War long before Kratos stepped on the scene.  This song is for the part of her that revels in the fight.
“White Flag” by Joseph
I could surrender but I'd Just be pretending, no I'd Rather be dead than live a lie Burn the white flag
While this song also invokes the imagery of war, the intent is broader - refusing to let circumstances force you down, living life whatever the situation is.  Rachel’s ability to live in the moment let her continue to enjoy the parts of her life outside the immediate scope of the war, whether that was appreciating teen idols, laughing at her cousin’s complete lack of chill at a school square dance, or taking time to build her relationship with Tobias.  These aspects faded as the war began to encroach onto everything, but she managed to maintain her life longer than some of the others.
“Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes” by Paul Simon and Ladysmith Black Mambazo
And she said honey take me dancing But they ended up sleeping in a doorway By the bodegas and the lights on Upper Broadway Wearing diamonds on the soles of their shoes
This was a late addition, but as I was writing this post I realized that I have a post-war Rachel-Tobias song but nothing for their relationship during the war, and this just jumped out at me.  This song, to me, captures the difference in their initial positions in life and society, and how little they let it matter to them.  They can be just as happy flying together or hanging out in Tobias’ meadow or Rachel’s bedroom as they could be at a dance or the mall or another more traditional venue.  It also captures a sense of her refusal to let him cut her out and their willingness to meet in the middle.
“Bird Song” covered by T-Sisters
If you hear that same sweet song again Will you know why? Anyone who sings a tune so sweet Is passing by Laugh in the sunshine Sing Cry in the dark Fly through the night
Sleep in the stars Don't you cry Dry your eyes on the wind
This is my post-war Rachel and Tobias song, although it could apply equally well to the rest of the Animorphs after her death.  Initially written by Jerry Garcia in memory of Janis Joplin, I picked this particular version because I love the harmonies and it’s three women singing it.  This is another emotional association, no great character examination, just mourning for a dearly loved friend.
“This War” by Sting
And you can see the coming battle You pray the drums will never cease And you may win this war that's coming But would you tolerate the peace?
This song is written as an explicit condemnation of war, but I interpret and apply it here to Rachel’s own mixed feelings about the war, her love for it, and her place in the world without it.  While she’s not financially profiting, she does find herself more at home in battle (especially as the series goes on) and this song - to me - captures her fear that in giving more freedom to that part of herself she’s losing other elements of herself.  I personally believe she would have had a better chance than some might expect had she survived, but we’ll never know.
“Riot” by Three Days Grace
If you feel so filthy, so dirty, so f---ed up If you feel so walked on, so painful, so p---ed off You're not the only one refusing to go down You're not the only one, so get up
This was already on my Marco list, where I said it was my song for him, Rachel, and Tobias.  Whether they’re stirring s#!t with each other because they’re bored or burning down the world because at this point who cares, this is the song for my feral children.
“Yellow Flicker Beat” by Lorde
I'm a princess cut from marble, smoother than a storm And the scars that mark my body, they're silver and gold My blood is a flood of rubies, precious stones It keeps my veins hot, the fire's found a home in me
I’m sure I’m not the first person to connect this song to Rachel.  Katniss is a different person, but as a song for a fighter who still can’t escape their war, it maps onto Rachel pretty well.
God is a DJ by P!nk
I've been the girl, middle finger in the air Unaffected by rumors, the truth, I don't care So open your mouth, stick out your tongue You might as well let go You can't take back what you've done
This song comes back to the joyful nonconformity of Rachel’s character.  She is who she is, and she doesn’t care what you think about it or expect from her.

***
Unlike most of your co-workers, you love working on Saturdays. Sure, it’s the busiest day of the week and therefore you get more than your fair share of asshole customers. Most of the shit you have to put up with is worth it, though.
Saturdays are just usually great for your very favourite part of your job at the music store: helping kids pick out their first instrument. Nothing beats the excitement on a child’s face when they’re allowed to choose a musical instrument to play.
Today was turning out to be a slight disappointment, though. An unexpected rainstorm had swept over the city and kept most of your would-be-customers at home.
It’s fast approaching lunchtime and you should be reaching your peak selling time, but the shop remains mostly empty. You lean on the polished countertop, sighing with boredom as you watch your co-worker help a middle- aged lady pick out a new case for her beloved violin.
After a moment your attention drifts to the rain-splattered window. The street outside is pretty much deserted. A couple of people run from the cafe across the street to the bus stop a little further down the road. You watch them distractedly for a few moments, huddling together under the metal shelter until the bus pulls up and obscures your view, snapping you back to reality.
Just to give yourself something to do, you head into the back room to change the music, determined to put on something a little happier to lighten your mood. Pulling up the playlist on the computer, you queue up a few of your old favourite tunes that always help to bring a smile to your face. Once youre all done you head back into the front of the store. As you take your place back behind the counter you notice a new customer has appeared during your short absence. A guy with a couple of kids are standing with their backs to you, looking at the selection of junior guitars you have on display on the front wall.
Knowing that new customers usually like to just browse for a while before being asked if they need help, you leave them to it, busying yourself with tidying the display of plectrums on the countertop.
When you look up again a moment later, you notice the smallest kid isn’t standing with the man and his other child anymore. Confused, you glance around the room until you see him heading over to your display of speakers and amps. Kids have tried to climb and sit on them many times before, but you’re not about to let this kid scuff up your perfect display.
As your co-worker is still busy with the violin lady, you realise very quickly that the job of controlling this child falls to you. You head out from behind the counter, making your way over to the little boy. “Hey, buddy!” You chime, keeping your tone light and friendly. “Where’re you heading off to!”
The child turns around, his bright green eyes wide and startled like he’d already been caught doing something wrong. He stares up at you silently for a moment, seemingly thinking of the best way to reply so that he doesn’t get into trouble. He looks extremely adorable, his dark blonde hair is fluffy and in disarray, like he’d recently taken off a hat or hood. His shiny red raincoat is still damp as are the bottom half of the dungarees he’s wearing and his Star Wars themed wellies are flecked with mud.
“It’s okay.” You reassure him, smiling brightly. “You haven’t done anything wrong, I just don’t want you to get lost, this is a big store y’know.”
The little boy glances over to the man and the other child that he’d come into the shop with. “Is that your daddy and big sister over there?” You ask kindly, trying to make comfortable conversation.
The boy nods, nervously stuffing his tiny hands into the pockets of his coat.
“Are you all here to buy a guitar?” You ask, determined to get this kid to relax a bit, he seems incredibly shy.
“For Cordi.” He replies quietly. “It’s her eighth birthday.” His face lights up as though talking about his big sister is one of his very favourite pastimes.
You can’t help but mirror his large smile. “Wow, that’s fun! Guitars are my favourite, shall we go and see if your daddy and Cordi need any help?”
The child nods again before scurrying off back towards his family. You follow him, feeling pleased to finally have something productive to do.
“Hey, dude.” The dad chuckles, picking up his son. “Cordi can’t decide which one she wants. We might be here a while, but I promise we’ll go and get some food after, yeah?”
The little family seem adorable and you’re looking forward to helping them out as you step a little closer to them. “Hi there, welcome to RockBeat, can I help you at all?”
For the first time, the father turns to face you and you have to fight not to blush. It’s instantly clear where your new little buddy got his pretty eyes from and the rest of the man in front of you is equally as perfect. His bleached blonde hair is damp from the downpour, and his cheeks are a bit flushed, but he’s by far the most beautiful man you’ve laid eye on in a long time. “Yeah, please.” He replies, smiling shyly. “I’m looking for a junior guitar for my daughter, do you have any recommendations?”
“Sure…” You reply just about managing to tear your eyes away from the angelic man to look at the young girl holding his hand. Just like her little brother and her dad, Cordi has the prettiest green eyes, surrounded by thick golden lashes. Her hair is tied in two long, dark blond pleats with a red ribbon at the end of each. “A little birdy told me it was your birthday.” You smile, hoping to give off a friendly vibe as the girl shifts closer to her father until she’s half hidden behind his leg. “I’ll do whatever I can to help you, birthday girl.”
Glancing back up at her dad, you feel your cheeks heat up with embarrassment when you notice the puzzled look on his face. Goodness knows how freaked out he must be that a complete stranger knows it’s his kid’s birthday.
“Oh, your little boy told me!” You explain hastily.
The stranger glances at his youngest child, still nestled contentedly in his arms. “What have you been up to, Mr? You weren’t wondering off again, were you?”
The little boy buries his face in his dad’s shoulder, apparently feeling shy.
“Why do you have to be such an ass, Caleb!” Cordi huffs, rolling her eyes as she turns back towards the wall of guitars.
“Cordelia Karen!” The father gasps, his cheeks turning pink with embarrassment. “Don’t call your brother that, it’s not too late for me to change my mind about your birthday present, you know.”
Cordelia pouts, folding her little arms across her chest as she stares up her father pleadingly. “I’m sorry, daddy…”
The beautiful man in front of you immediately softens at his daughter’s apology.  “Okay, just don’t do it again.” He kisses his son’s cheek before placing him down on the ground and taking his hand.
It’s obvious that the father feels a little awkward now and you’re eager to help him relax. You glance over at the counter where your coworker is checking out the violin lady. “I’ll be right back.” You tell the little family before scurrying over to the counter. By the time you reach it, the only other customer in the shop is already heading off towards the exit. “Hey Gina.” You smile brightly, “I’m just helping this customer over here and it’s the little girl’s birthday, do we have any of those lollipops left?”
Gina nods as she brings out the pot of sweet treats from under the counter. They used to be left next to the till so that customers could help themselves, until a group of stupid teenagers used them as missiles, throwing them at each other across the shop. After that, your boss made it clear that the sweets and lollipops were for special customers only.
You thank Gina and head back to your customers with the little pot. “We save these under the counter for our most important customers.” You explain in a faux serious voice, looking between all three of their faces. “I definitely think that a birthday girl and her family qualify as that.” You offer the pot to Cordelia who examines the contents for a moment before picking out a strawberry flavoured lolly. She offers her dad a questioning glance to ensure that she’s allowed to take it. He nods, rolling his eyes fondly.
“And what about you, lil buddy?” You ask, offering the pot to little Caleb, who’s still clinging to his father’s leg. “What’s your favourite flavour?”
Caleb surveys his options before pointing at a cherry flavoured lollipop.
“Nice choice!” You commend, picking out the boy’s chosen lolly and handing it to him. “There are some seats over there, if you want to sit down while your sister decides what guitar she wants.
The little boy nods before looking up at his dad. “Can I play games on your phone?”
The father takes out his iPhone and unlocks it before handing it to his son, “stick to the ones that are already on there please, I don’t want any nasty surprises on my bill this time, young man!”
Caleb giggles cheekily as he scurries off towards the little seating area and clambers onto a chair before unwrapping his lollipop.
“He’s gonna get my phone all sticky…” The dad groans. “I really need to buy him one of those kid’s tablets or something.”
“Yeah, all of my friends with kids have said those things are a blessing” you laugh, sounding a bit nervous because you still can’t get over how beautiful this man is.
The blonde man returns a tiny giggle. “I wish that more of my friends had kids, maybe I’d make a lot less mistakes with my own, if I had people to give me advice.”
Your smile slips from your lips as the man in front of you suddenly becomes quiet and vulnerable. It takes all of your effort not to reach out and touch his arm. You’ve only known him for a couple of minutes and that would be a much too familiar gesture. Instead, you adopt an optimistic tone. “My friends make mistakes too, like every single day! I think that being a parent teaches the adults as much as the kids.”
The stranger gives a tiny huff of laughter. “You’re definitely right there…”
There’s a sadness in the blonde man’s eyes that you desperately wish you could take away. You want to at least give him the opportunity to talk things out, it seems as though he keeps these particular emotions buried. You’ve known enough people like him to recognise the signs: the fake smiles, the worry lines on his forehead and the few premature grey hairs lurking at the dark roots of his bleached hair. “I’m sure you’re doing an amazing job… Your children both seem happy and they’re so polite! You wouldn’t believe some of the horrors we see in here sometimes.”
The blonde brightens up a little at your words and places a hand on his daughter’s shoulder, as though he’s trying to display how proud of her he is. “Thank you, that’s nice to hear. It’s easy to feel like a failure as a single dad sometimes.”
Cordelia huffs indignantly as she cuddles into his side. “You’re the best daddy in the whole world.” She declares, her pretty green eyes sparkling as though she might start crying. Her father appears to be just as emotionally affected by the words and the thought of either of them shedding so much as a single tear, breaks your heart.
In an attempt to lighten the mood you paint a bright smile on your face and lean down to the little girl’s level. “I just realised that we haven’t all been properly introduced yet.” You hold out your hand to her as you tell her your name and she shakes it shyly as she tells you hers. You glance up hopefully at her dad, still smiling brightly. “And I’d love to know the name of the best daddy in the whole world.” You prompt, straightening up to your full height.
The blonde man blushes a little as he shakes your hand. “I’m Michael.” He mumbles, shifting his weight awkwardly. “I’m not sure I really deserve that title, though.”
“Well I’m pretty sure that Cordelia said you are, and I trust her, she definitely wouldn’t lie to me.” You insist, your cheeks aching at how much you’re smiling now. There’s definitely something between the two of you, a connection of some kind. You sort of wish you’d met this guy in a bar or club or somewhere else that you could flirt with him openly and not have to worry about being judged by his children. “Anyway, we better get the birthday girl her big present!” You announce, finally letting go of Michael’s hand that you just realised you’re still holding.
Cordelia’s face lights up in a bright smile. “I’m gonna learn to play even better than daddy!” She exclaims, her pigtails bouncing as she jumps up and down on the spot.
“I don’t think that’d be too difficult.” Michael chuckles, tearing his eyes away from you to glance down at his little girl. “It’s been years since I even picked up a guitar...”
You scoff loudly. “Once you’ve mastered a musical instrument, the skill never leaves you.” You reassure the beautiful man in front of you. “Even if it gets a little rusty, it’s not hard to polish off. Maybe a new audience would help build your confidence back up.”
“Yes!” Cordelia grins excitedly. “All of my friends would love it if you played to us like you used to.”
Michael bristles uncomfortably and you feel guilty for suggesting something he’s clearly not okay with. “Well I’m sure they’ll love it even more when you play for them!” You chuckle to Cordelia, hoping to redirect the conversation. “Let’s take a look at all these junior guitars and see which one’s worthy enough to be your first one!” You gesture toward the wall in front of them. “Are we looking for an acoustic or an electric?”
“I think acoustic to begin with.” Michael replies, surveying the options you have displayed on the wall. “I promised her she can have an electric one next year if she keeps up with her lessons until then.” He adds, shooting you a sideways glance, almost as though he’s seeking your approval for this parenting method.
Nodding, you offer him an encouraging smile. “That sounds like a good deal to me! I think Cordelia is definitely right about who the best dad in the world is.”
Michael’s blush deepens a bit, but he keeps his eyes trained on the small guitars in front of him. “I’m still not sure about that.”
Cordelia huffs and folds her arms across her chest like an angry teacher. “I’m gonna tell uncle Ashton that you’re being silly again.” She threatens. “He’s told you a million times that you’re great and that it’s not your fault that mama left…”
The blonde man gasps in horror at his daughter’s words as he cuts her off with a frantic wave of his hands. “Okay, Cordi, I get it. I’m sorry.”
Seemingly pleased with herself, Cordelia goes back to surveying the guitars on the wall.
“I’m sorry about that.” Michael mumbles. “I know your job must be difficult enough without hearing our life story.”
Resisting the need to hold back this time, you reach out and place a hand on Michael’s shoulder. “You don’t need to apologise. If there’s one thing I know about, it’s heartache.” You assure him, although your pained tone only seems to make him sadder. “I guess that’s just musicians for you, huh?” You add, hoping to lighten the mood a bit.
To your surprise, Michael doesn’t try to shrug your hand away, he simply raises his eyebrow curiously. “What do you play?” He enquires, seemingly genuinely interested in that area of your life.
“I play guitar and sing, mostly.” You reply. “I’ve recently been trying to teach myself to play piano too. I’m not very good at that yet, though.”
Michael opens his mouth to reply but is cut off by Cordelia making an impatient noise.
“I’m sorry birthday girl!” You giggle. “Do you see anything that takes your fancy?”
Cordelia grins, pointing at a bright red acoustic guitar with a decorative design around the middle. “That one’s really pretty!”
You nod thoughtfully, reaching up to take her chosen instrument from the wall. “Red’s my favourite colour, so this is the one I’d have suggested, too. Do you want to hold it?”
The little girl looks up at her dad for permission and awaits his confirmation before holding out her hands eagerly. “Yes please!”
It’s hard to tell who looks more excited and emotional in the moment when Cordelia takes the guitar from you. The little girl is obviously delighted but her father looks so proud and you’re sure that you notice him wipe a tear from the corner of his eye. Not wanting to draw his daughter’s attention to it, you call for your co-worker. “Gina, this is Cordelia, it’s her birthday today! That means she gets a free strap to go with her new guitar. Will you show her what options we have please?”
Gina agrees easily and beckons the little girl over to the stand with the children’s guitar straps. Cordelia looks thrilled as she hands you the guitar back to you, before skipping over to your co-worker.
“This is a big day for you, huh?” You ask Michael gently. “Your little girl getting her first guitar, that’s a huge deal!”
Michael sniffles, trying to hide his face behind his hand so that you can’t see the fresh tears that escape from the corner of his eyes. “When she told me she wanted to learn to play an instrument, I expected her to say she wanted drumming lessons. She’s super close to my friend that used to be our band’s drummer, so I really expected her to want to be like him.” His voice is thick with emotion as he continues. “But when I asked her about it, she said she wanted to learn guitar so that she could be like her favourite person in the world. I thought she was going to follow that up by telling me about some band I’ve never heard of that her friends listen to or something. Instead, she said that her favourite person in the world was me and I…”
When his voice breaks fully, you throw caution to the wind yet again and place both hands on his shoulders, not feeling quite brave enough to go in for a full hug. “Of course you are! I’ve known you all for like five minutes and I can tell that you’re a hero to both your kids. It’s obvious how much they love and look up to and from what I’ve seen, it’s well deserved.”
Michael offers you a watery smile. “I don’t feel like I deserve it all. If it wasn’t for my amazing friends and my wonderful parents, I don’t know I’d cope. I definitely couldn’t do this entirely alone.”
It feels slightly awkward because you want to know more about his life and how you can help make it better but it feels strange to think that when you’ve only just met him. “Well, from an outside perspective, I think you’re doing a brilliant job. It’s adorable that your little girl wants to be like you. She’s made a good choice if you ask me.” You smile all-too-fondly.
Michael seems to really appreciate your words. He hastily wipes his eyes and forces a brighter smile onto his face. “Anyway, I better go and see how much this fancy guitar is gonna cost me…” He chuckles. “Kids never seem to pick the least expensive option for anything.”
“Well today must be your lucky day because, this is in our lower price range and you qualify for the birthday discount, of course.” You give him a friendly wink before heading over to the counter.
“Is that a real thing?” Michael asks sceptically. “I’m happy to pay whatever the real price is, I don’t want you to get into trouble…”
You wave your hand in a dismissive gesture. “It’s a discount I’m allowed to give I promise.” You reassure him. “It also comes with a free case. So she’s really let you off lightly.”
Michael doesn’t seem convinced that he’s entitled to all that you’re offering but he doesn’t argue as you enter the product code into the till. You add the ‘birthday discount’ which is really your staff discount that you should use for friends and family only, but you see it as helping to secure a future friend, which is just as important as existing ones in your opinion. His face brightens as he sees how much the price is reduced and it makes your heart feel full. “Are you sure that’s right?” He questions disbelievingly.
“Yeah, that’s right.” You confirm, ringing through the transaction.
Before Michael can question you further, Cordelia bounces over to the counter brandishing a bright rainbow coloured guitar strap. “Can I have this one, daddy?” She asks hopefully and squeals with delight when Michael nods.
The father still seems taken aback by your kindness when he slides his card into the machine and types in his pin number.
“I’ll just go and grab the free case.” You offer, before heading into the store room. You wish that you could give Michael and his kids even more free stuff just make them smile but you really would get into trouble if you gave them anything else. Once you locate the plain black fabric case for Cordelia’s chosen guitar, you pull it from the shelf and head back into the shop where the little family are gathered near the counter. “Do you want me to put the guitar in here for you?” You ask, unzipping the case.
“Yes please.” Cordelia replies. “Thank you for all my free extras!”
You grin widely as you place the guitar and the strap into the case and hand it to the little girl. “You’re more than welcome! Just remember to always ask for me when you come back here and I’ll always make sure I give you the best deals.”
“About that…” Michael mumbles awkwardly as he picks up a sleepy looking Caleb. “It’s been a long time since I played guitar, I could do with a refresher on how to change strings and tune it up, would you be able to help me with that?”
“Sure.” You nod, hoping for the first time ever that a string breaks on the new guitar sooner rather than later so that you get to see Michael again. “If you’re passing before that, though, I wouldn’t say no to a piece of birthday cake.”
Cordelia giggles at your cheeky wink and then tugs at her father’s coat sleeve. “We can bring some tomorrow, can’t we?” She asks excitedly.
“I don’t see why not.” Michael agrees before turning his gaze back to you. “As long as you’ll be here.”
“I will be.” You confirm. “I can’t wait to see you all again.”
Michael reiterates that he’ll be back tomorrow before thanking you once again and turning towards the exit.
You can hear Cordelia chatting excitedly all the way out of the shop and your heart sinks as they step out into the rain.
“What the fuck are you still standing here for?” Gina chuckles, startling you out of your thoughts. “Go give him your number!”
You shake your head, watching through the large window at the front of the shop as Michael places Caleb down on the pavement and takes the guitar from Cordelia. “I can’t do that, he’d laugh at me…”
“He made it clear that he was single and the tension between the two of you was un-fucking-barable.” Gina groans, rolling her eyes impatiently. “Either go and give him your number or I will!”
Trying not to overthink it, you scribble your phone number onto a scrap of paper and hurry out of the shop. Michael and his children are still standing in front of the window and look up at you in surprise when you jog over to them. “I wanted to give you this.” You smile, fully aware of how much you’re blushing. “Just in case you have a broken string emergency or anything before tomorrow.”
Michael glances down at you number before meeting your gaze, his green eyes sparkling softly. “Is it okay to use this for a general chat as well?” He asks, the nerves in his voice barely disguised. “It’s been a long time since I made any new friends”
“Of course… And I’d love to see a photo of what Cordelia’s cake looks like before she brings me a slice of it tomorrow!”
The blonde man smiles softly. “General chats and cake photos are the least we can do to thank you.”
After saying goodbye once again, you head back into the shop to dry off, feeling proud of yourself for being brave for once. You head into the kitchen to make yourself and Gina a warm drink, still not quite believing that your risk had paid off. When you return to the counter, you are rewarded by a text message pinging through to your phone. When you open the message from the unknown number, you smile to yourself at the simple words that suddenly mean so much to you.
Thanks again for today. You’ve made Cordelia’s birthday so much more special and we can’t wait to see you again tomorrow!
It’s strange how quickly you’ve developed a fondness for Michael and his little family. You’re fully aware that nothing may come of this, but you have a feeling that you’ve gained a new friend at the very least.

ARE YOU STAYING HOME FROM WORK OR SCHOOL?
yup - working from home since march 9th, so i’m in it for the long haul at this point. universities being universities we were one of the first to be sent home, and i imagine that we’ll be one of the last organizations back to the office.
IF YOU’RE STAYING HOME, WHO IS THERE WITH YOU?
my partner and two cats. his company is properly shut down until at least may 4th. i don’t know whether to be envious or sympathetic about how much free time he has - maybe both? the cats think they are my personal assistants and have been valiantly shredding any available paper in case it contains sensitive information.
ARE YOU A HOMEBODY?
not really. if i’m feeling like a homebody it’s usually a sign that i’m sinking into a depressive episode. actually, i was just crawling out of one - i had been stuck at home for months while i was looking for a job and now i’m stuck back at home. it’s been tough - but i’m glad that i have work to do, and i’ve been making a real effort to connect with people.
AN EVENT THAT YOU WERE LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT GOT CANCELLED?
we had a big family party scheduled for mid march. all the cousins and their kids and my aunts and uncles (about 35 of us) were going to throw my grandparents an anniversary party at their nursing home. none of us wanted to talk about much, but it was probably one of the last chances we had to all be together. my grandfather is not doing well and one of my aunts has been declining rapidly with ALS. i’m really sad that we might never be able to make it happen. we’ve had to cancel our summer travel and other sundries, but that doesn’t seem like as much of a big deal.
WHAT MOVIES HAVE YOU WATCHED RECENTLY?
ten things i hate about you! my sister and i had a skype movie night and i think we’re going to watch emperor’s new groove this week. also i saw all the star wars prequels for the first time (so much wasted potential). i watched the new emma, and liked it, even if i have some questions about some of the changes they made.
WHAT SHOWS ARE YOU WATCHING?
i haven’t been watching anything, which is wild. so i will use this space to say that i have recently discovered video games and am deeply invested in whether or not random mass effect npcs like me. (what can i say? being mean to people stresses me out, even if they’re fake).
WHAT MUSIC ARE YOU LISTENING TO?
i’ve been going hard on comfort listening, so i completely expect that my most played album of 2020 will be neil young’s harvest. i am currently listening to the playlist that i made for my 30th birthday trip to space camp. it is called space songs, and it includes all the space themed music we could find, regardless of genre. the switch from the holst to nicki minaj is a trip and somehow seems completely appropriate to our lives at the moment.
WHAT ARE YOU READING?
i am currently reading ancillary justice by anne leckie, which i am about 10 pages into but cautiously intrigued by. i just finished a couple books by kamila shamsie on the strength of a god in every stone, and i was not disappointed.
i’ve been helping one of my friend’s sister with her medieval lit paper, and have been rereading the canterbury tales out of order - which led to rereading gawain and the green knight (armitage then harrison then stone).
WHAT ARE YOU DOING FOR SELF CARE?
for self care i am making myself go to work everyday. i am showering in the morning and i am cooking homemade food every night. i am trying (and failing) to not guilt trip myself for wasting hours and for the fact that my brain is moving sluggishly in fits and starts, i am drinking 8 gallons of coffee because i have had to go off my adhd meds and nothing else makes me feel calm (i know. i know. that last one isn’t actually self care). i set up my desk by the brightest window in my house. i am maximizing all possible cuddle time with my partner and with the cats. i am deeply invested in the daily progress of my garden and my seedlings. i am not buying anything. i am not yelling at people on twitter.
i will tag anyone who wants to do this - but will especially call out @gollyb @headandthemusic @notwiselybuttoowell @currentboat @wearethemakersofmanners

(Small warning, I have ADHD and just took my meds so this is a little ramble-y and disjointed. I apologize, there is no way to fix this, my brain is just like that oops. For courtesy, I’ve put all the long stuff under the cut so you only have to read my monologue if you want to.)
1. What is your favorite genre of music? Why?
Probably indie-rock and indie punk. I like indie-rock largely because my favorite shows in my formative years were Chuck, Bones and a couple other “golden era” crime dramas that all featured a lot of indie-rock music in the background. Indie punk appeals to me because it’s just a good catharsis while also being pretty damn dance-able. Kiwi Jr and AJJ are both really good bands if you need to just let it all out while jamming to some bops.
2. What’s an art project you’ve made that you’re proud of?
I draw angels frequently, often depicting them as humanoid but still terrifying. This was an art theme that I’ve had going since before I was religious and I find that “angelic” imagery can sometimes leak into my other art so a lot of my favorite art is drawings of wings, gore, monsters and all kinds of Gothic themes. Right now, I have a watercolor of Virginia Madsen that I’m just in love with. I was always enchanted by her hypnotized stare in Candyman and I did my best to capture that. I even went out with my girlfriend to buy a gold gel pen so her tears would glitter. From theme to technical prowess, it’s my favorite painting right now and possibly my magnum opus. My previous best was a gore heavy, similarly angel themed, digital painting of Roger Wilco from the Space Quest games (weird special interests, I know.) I could go on about drawings I love for hours, so I’ll cut myself off here with the small post script that this is just my visual art and I also have poetry and prose that I feel similarly about.
3. Do you have a favorite album/podcast to put on in the background while you work or study?
It all really depends on my mood. My girlfriend shared a really relaxing Sovietwave playlist with me recently that I’ve been enjoying. I also listen to a lot of AJJ and Saint Motel, I don’t really think I could really pin down a specific album for either of them. The Candyman soundtrack works really well for study especially for my Gothic and Mystery class. I have a playlist titled Fuck Funk that’s specifically for writing fanfiction since I could never find a good playlist for writing smut when I needed it but I also use that playlist to work out since it’s mostly just a healthy mix of songs that I can jam to. I’ve never liked podcasts for study/work since I can’t really write and listen at the same time but I did make a podcast once for a professor that was a radio-play style parody of Scooby-Doo. I did all of the editing and I still listen back over it and pat myself on the back for turning 2 hours of raw improv into something that got us like a 98. A lot of my own music taste peaks through.
4. If you could become the protagonist/antagonist of any media franchise, which one would you pick and why?
Realistically, Animal Crossing because that’s the safest bet least likely to lead to my death. If we’re gonna get wild... probably BJ Blazkowicz from Wolfenstein so I could kick some N*zi ass or Conan Edogawa/Jimmy Kudo from Case Closed/Detective Conan so I could enjoy that sweet mid 90′s aesthetic.
5. Can you play any instruments? which ones?
I can, actually, I’ve played cello since I was 8 (I’m 18 now) although I’m a little rusty. I played piano and drums for a while and while I’m pretty useless when it comes to piano these days, I still maintain a pretty firm grip on my sense of time and rhythm thanks to the years I spent playing percussion. I played bari sax in middle and high school. I marched it for 3 years until I had a back injury but I was in jazz band all 4 years of high school so I was still playing. I was also in choir for a very long time and even spent my junior and senior years in an acapella Madrigal choir (I still have my costumes from both years) and even though it hasn’t been a whole year since I graduated, I still miss singing. I certainly don’t miss high school but I do miss that choir.
6. Do you collect anything? If so, what?
Not sure if this counts but I’ve been an achievement hunter/completionist since I played Ocarina of Time so I guess I “collect” video game achievements. I also collect lost things when I find them. I have an abandoned library card, two different gym membership cards, and a whole bunch of business cards. I have a small collection of lighters but that’s less about the joy of collecting and more about how often I burn incense. Aside from the usual stuffed animal collection that most people have from childhood, I don’t collect anything else.
7. How many songs are there in your music library?
This is kinda difficult for me to answer. I use Spotify and I don’t always download my music since I have unlimited data, but it currently says that I have 1070 “liked” songs which is likely a little conservative since I had to switch accounts last year and lost some of my music in the process. (This just got me thinkin, back in the iTunes era when songs were 99cents a pop I would have had to pay more than a thousand dollars for that kind of collection.)
8. If you could live anywhere in the world, and at any time in history, where and when would you choose?
So, by any time in history do you mean only the past or the future too? If future is an acceptable answer, I’m gonna say Star Trek. Like if Star Trek ever becomes vaguely reality, I’m going there. Even if the details are wrong, a career as a science officer on a space ship in a universe that isn’t constantly at war and is instead working towards peace and the pursuit of higher knowledge is perfect. If we’re only talking about the past, with no allowances for possible futures, then I think I’d want to live in the 80s in a metropolitan city like New York, Chicago, or Tokyo. Perhaps its misplaced nostalgia, but working as a secretary sounds nice. In the 80s you could still outright buy an apartment instead of renting it and it was actually semi-affordable (at least for the privileged) which as someone facing adulthood in the current economy, sounds like a dream come true. I guess I just want the simplicity and security of economy back then. Lookin for that yuppie life!
9. Have you ever performed live in front of an audience?
I have, several times. Although I’ve never been a headliner or anything I’ve played and sang at school concerts (even had a few solos) and my jazz band once performed for a dance hall full of people. I’ve never been paid unless you count getting a free CD but I’ve performed in front of quite a few live audiences.
Anyway, Jimbotnik didn’t write a tenth question so I guess I get an out. I’m sorry for my rambling answers, that’s just life. I’m gonna tag @jasminerobotnik @zoekrystall @rohotnik since y’all are my Sonic blog mutuals (like my header implies, I keep my main and this side blog separate for privacy’s sake) I’m also tagging @actsoflove @manicrobotnik @dusicielkusiciel @hamil-trash24 @lee-bunny @legally-immortal and @wutevrz
If you’re confused as to why I tagged you, I don’t have many mutuals so I picked followers who I’d seen some interaction from. You don’t have to play if you don’t want to and I’ll delete your tag if you’d prefer. As usual with these games, it’s also open to anyone who wants to get one of these started among their group so if you’re reading this post and wish you’d been tagged, that’s you.
My questions:
Do you wear glasses/contacts? If you wear glasses do you like how they look on you?
Do you have a playlist of music that’s just for when you’re sad? What are your favorite songs from it?
Is there a skill you consider yourself particularly good at?
If you’re the kind of person who uses a reusable water bottle, do you decorate it? If not, what is your favorite drink day to day?
Do you drink diet soda or can you not tolerate the taste?
Do you write fanfiction? What fandoms and genres? Do you share your fic with people you know in real life?
What’s your favorite scent? Do you often buy scented products like incense or candles?
Do you like scary movies? If so, what’s your favorite? If you don’t, what is your favorite genre of films?
What’s your go to movie snack when you’re watching in a theater? What about when you’re watching a movie at home?
What’s your favorite “medium” for art (sculpture, dance, music, painting, drawing, poetry etc.) and which one do you feel most adept at?

the wip list
Alright, gang. Buckle up. This is going to be a long one, and at this point I can’t even bring myself to be sorry about it. I meant to put this off but then I started thinking about it, so here we are (at 1:05 in the morning when I have to work at 8:30, what am I doing?).
I’m going to break this down in a couple of ways—fanfiction vs. original fiction, fandom (if it’s a fanfic), series/universe (if it’s in one), and then the individual books themselves (if I have the ability to do that, because quite frankly, for some of these I don’t because I have no idea what the titles are or where I’m splitting the story yet).
Also, “WIP” is an incredibly broad term here. In some cases it means I’ve already written the whole thing but I plan to 100% rewrite it (and haven’t started yet). In some cases it means I’ve written half of the thing but haven’t finished yet. In some cases it means I have it all outlined but haven’t started writing yet. In some cases it means I haven’t really touched an outline on paper yet but I have it all worked out in my head. Take the “in progress” part of WIP with a grain of salt.
(Putting this whole thing under the cut because it is so freaking long. I apologize if the read-more doesn’t work on your dash. Idk what tumblr is doing.)
Starting off easy—the fics:
Harry Potter: (JKR can fuck off with her transphobia and cultural appropriation and all the other stupid and fucked-up shit that she’s done/promoted but, as I said to my friends, she can pry my next-gen fanfics from my cold dead hands. Cursed Child is not canon in my life because I’ve never read it and I don’t care what nonsense she came up with.)
The “In Your Arms I’ll Stay” universe (Tedtoire/Scorose):
The first fic in this universe is the first fic I ever finished. 110k words followed up by a ~137k word sequel. It is a disaster and a half but it’s also my baby and I fully intend to rewrite it one of these days. It is full of standard Tedtoire trope-y nonsense—best friends since childhood! two-year age gap! jealousy about other relationships! obliviousness!—and at 15 I thought it was a really good idea to try to turn it into a mystery too, which is a mistake that I have every intention of rectifying because it was unnecessary and I just didn’t know how to do drama and tension back then.
Anyway. It will probably be two parts again when I rewrite it because one part per school year just works, yeah? We’re covering Vic’s fifth/Teddy’s seventh year and Vic’s sixth year/Teddy’s first year out of school over the course of these parts.
Within this universe we also have Heartbeat and Bone, which is a Scorose fic that I’ve written probably 75% of already but have no intention of actually finishing before I rewrite it. I want to get the stories in the right order so that I can get details straightened out, so Teddy and Victoire get the rewrites first and then I’ll be revisiting this fic. Also full of trope-y nonsense (and my continued acceptance of the headcanon that the Heads have their own dormitory at Hogwarts, because it’s just too much fun that way).
some things were meant to be (Tedtoire):
Oh god, another fic with a cliché title taken from Can’t Help Falling In Love. I have zero regrets because it fits them perfectly.
This one is... half-done? I fully intend to finish it but I need to finish the outline first. It was my 2019 NaNoWriMo project and I am 100% just writing it for the lols (and because Teddy and Vic are like... my comfort ship where writing is concerned). I wanted to play with a different universe and change up their relationship and roles at school a bit, but once again... trope-y nonsense. It’s unavoidable with them. There is obliviousness everywhere.
Star Wars: (it’s Reylo, okay? It’s Reylo. I don’t want to hear it about how the ship is ~so terrible.~ That is literally the furthest thing in the world from a hot take, you can’t say a single thing that I haven’t heard before, and I’m a grown adult and can do what I want. Bite me.)
looking for the map that leads me home (Reylo):
Stole the title on this one from We Take Care of Our Own by Bruce Springsteen, because why the fuck not, right?
To put it simply: musician AU. To put it a little less simply: he’s got a dead career, she wants to have even the slightest shot at one, Rose is the best, Poe’s a singing heartthrob, Finn is a love-struck goofball. You know, all that fun stuff. The entire thing is based on a playlist that I made and every chapter has a song that acts as its theme. I haven’t touched it since January 2018. I want to finish it eventually but it’s not really at the top of the priority list.
There’s a few other fics from other fandoms that I’ve started and never finished but the odds of me touching them again are like... nonexistent, so I’m not including them here. I’ll update this post if anything changes on that front (but it probably won’t).
Now for the complicated part—the original fiction:
Maker’s Magic
This is a trilogy (or at least, it’s supposed to be). This is also a rewrite of the first story I ever finished—the fantasy novel that I wrote for my first-ever Camp NaNoWriMo back in August of 2011, when I had literally no clue what I was doing at all and essentially stole the plot structure from The Obsidian Trilogy by Mercedes Lackey and built my own story around it. This is not a good way to write a piece of fiction that you want to publish, kids, but it is a damn good way to get your feet wet when you’ve never really written before.
I am reworking this story entirely from scratch. The characters are... kind of the same as the original story. Kind of. Maybe. I’ve changed a few names and merged a few people together and scrapped some others and entirely shifted the backstory of pretty much everyone, but... they’re definitely still the same, right?
Basically, at this point the plot is really only similar to The Obsidian Trilogy in that we’ve got a trilogy, we’ve got some elves, and it’s your standard good vs. evil fantasy story (in its own unique fashion, of course). I’m still working out the details of this rewrite, but this is kind of the Holy Grail of all of my writing projects and the one that I’m most concerned about getting right, so I’m anticipating that I’ll be in it for the long haul on this one. I’m hoping I might be able to get a draft of the first book done this year, but... we’ll see.
(I also don’t want to give too many details about this project, ‘cause it’s the one that I’d really like to maybe publish one day, so...)
The Willow Hill universe
This started as a single story plus a standalone sequel set in the same universe, conceptualized when I was fourteen and missing horseback riding terribly (so yes, it is a story for all those Weird Horse Girls™ out there). I wrote a good portion of it, then deleted it, then rewrote the entire thing, then deleted it again a few years ago because I was no longer satisfied with the writing quality (after hitting top 100 on the Teen Fiction list on Wattpad way back when, so... I didn’t do too badly as a 16-year-old, but the writing still sucked). I’ve been promising a rewrite to my Wattpad followers since 2016 or something like that (2014? Whenever the hell it was that I deleted it the second time) but haven’t delivered at all.
I now envision this universe as a duology plus the aforementioned standalone sequel, except it’s not entirely fair to call it a YA duology in that the first book is definitely YA, but the second is more romance-y?
I originally just revealed the main character’s endgame relationship in the epilogue of the story, but I love both her and her boyfriend and their relationship so much that I decided that I’m going to be self-indulgent and write the story of them actually falling in love with each other, so that’s book two (so really, you don’t actually have to read book two to understand anything, I’m just writing it because I want to and it’s also kind of a present to anyone who read the original story when they were also a teenager and is now an adult who wants to read other stuff).
Book one is now about the teenage struggle of crushes and trying to figure out what it is that you actually want out of your life and what you value (I say “now” because it was definitely way more self-insert-y the first time I wrote it and it is decidedly not at this point). It’s also sort of a love letter to trainers who are amazing and the kind of person we should all be so lucky as to be coached by.
These characters are my comfort characters where original fiction is concerned since they’ve been bouncing around in my head for the last ten years or so, and I’m hoping I can get at least the first book rewritten in the next year-ish, partly because I’ve been promising it for so long, and partly because I just really enjoy this world and I want to get back to it again.
The Coffee Shop Chronicles
AKA, I lived in one coffee shop on my university campus for pretty much the entirety of my college experience and it was a very inspiring place to be, so this has less to do with coffee shop AUs and more to do with the fact that I met several of my favorite human beings on this earth over a vanilla chai latte and mutual sass with the baristas.
(One of said baristas is very near and dear to me and introduced me to another regular who is now a very good friend with the statement “You’re both sarcastic assholes. You’ll love each other.”)
None of the characters in this universe are based on actual human beings whom I know, but I liked the idea of the campus coffee shop serving as this thing that tangentially connected all of these people to one another, much in the way that I am tangentially connected to god knows how many people via my barista friend. Essentially, the idea is that the stories in this universe are all standalone, but the characters sometimes cross paths with one another at Caffeinated, so it’s sort of... Easter-egg-y in terms of who pops up where in which story.
Currently I only have two stories in this universe that are legitimately plotted out, but there is room for any number of spin-offs based on whichever characters show up in those stories (or don’t—that’s the fun of it being a coffee shop. The barista is the only reliable character). Those two stories are as follows:
Chance Encounters (title so totally subject to change, also stealing the terribly summary from the Wattpad draft that never saw the light of day):
For Bennett McGuire, things with guys just didn't seem to want to go her way. From the disasters that were her attempts at dating in high school to the problem that had been Elijah Becker, she hadn't exactly had the best luck. With all that in mind, it made perfect sense to swear off dating until she finished college—that is, it made sense until one frozen day in February when Gordon Evans walked into her life. After that, who was to say what would happen?
What’s Your Metaphor? (once again, enjoy the terrible summary from the Wattpad draft that never was. I am cringing reading it but also too tired to come up with anything better):
"What's the point?"
It's a question asked widely, for all sorts of reasons, and it's one that April Hayes didn't know the answer to any better than anyone else. All she knew was that she had her plan, and she was going to stick to it, because it was the only thing that seemed to have any sort of logic to it in her life. The things she thought, the things she believed—well, they all fell before the plan, because she didn't have time to ask herself "What's the point?"
That is, she didn't have the time to know the answer—her answer—until one guy by the name of Drew Collier showed up and made her consider things that she had never even thought of before.
High Blood
Yinz can go read my WIP introduction post for this one. It’s a fantasy story. Just for the hell of it, here’s the summary from said WIP introduction post:
At the age of seventeen, Thessaly of Averak had a choice—take the crown of her people and her place as her father’s heir, or set it aside to become one of the High Warriors, dedicated to protecting their people and the country that her long-dead ancestor Enred built after leading its citizens out of a long and bloody war. Amidst raids and famine at the borders, she gave up her crown to better serve the people that her family rules.
Ten years later, all is quiet. At least, all is quiet until Beca’s pendant is stolen by a thief who disappears into the night on the journey back from the summer palace, Tess gets herself stabbed, and the discovery is made that the rock-solid foundations of their family’s claim to the throne—and the peace that depends upon them—are laced with hairline fractures.
(I didn’t write anything to speak of for Camp NaNo July 2020 and actually wound up deleting my project for this on the NaNo site because my dad was hit by a car while cycling the Friday before the weekend when I was planning to write like... 30k words to catch up, so obviously I gave up on that plan (he is doing well now, thank you for asking). I’m hoping I’ll get around to this one eventually because this particular universe arguably has the most potential for having multiple stories set in it, fantasy-wise.)
Emerson’s Lights
Natalie Flynn has been best friends with Evan Acheson practically since birth. They've stuck together through thick and thin, from her braces in seventh grade to his jump to stardom as a singer-songwriter their freshman year of college.
She’d do anything for him, but spending a week with him on tour involves a lot more than she bargained for, culminating in the turn of events that is Caleb Blake, lead singer and primary songwriter of opening act Emerson’s Lights, moving into her house for the better part of a month.
She always knew there would be complications being the best friend of a rock star, but this? This was one that she didn’t bet on.
(Aka, girl meets boy in a band trope. Yay.)
(NaNoWriMo 2020 project)
The famous musician story (this thing doesn’t have a title right now and I’m not even going to try)
Stupid, trope-y nonsense idea that I came up with for my own personal amusement and nothing else. I’ve written a few chapters of it but genuinely have no idea where this falls in the hierarchy of things that I want to get done. Long story short, she’s in grad school for history, he’s a famous musician in town recording for a new album, they meet in the library, she pretends she has no idea who he is, and shenanigans ensue.
And that is where I think I’m going to leave it. There’s four other stories that I can think of off the top of my head that I could theoretically add to this list, but they are legitimately just ideas right now so they can be added at a later date when they’ve manifested themselves a little more strongly. There’s also another quartet in the Willow Hill universe that I came up with in high school that could theoretically be added but I think I might just steal those character names and give them their own little world instead. We’ll see.
Basically, if you didn’t get the point from this list: I am working on a lot of things, and when I say I’m writing, it could mean literally anything on this list (or any of the other ideas that I have floating around). The stories/universe here are the most likely candidates for my time, depending on whether I’m doing a deep dive into my writing or just playing around with something fun, and hopefully (god, hopefully) I’ll be able to move one or two of these to a “completed works” list in the next year(ish).
(Or at least, as complete as a draft ever gets before you start going in on it again.)

Kalosie for the ship meme if you are still accepting?
I am indeed still accepting! Honestly, I have so much fun doing these, and now that I've done most of the main ships, I'm really hoping they might start to stray into rarepair territory, like this. Rarepairs are my jam, especially for Legacies! Everyone is so damn shippable!
Who hogs the duvet: Neither of them really hog it. Josie rolls over in her sleep sometimes and it might make the duvet go with her but Kaleb ends up pulling her back in anyway, so they're always both covered.
Who texts/rings to check how their day is going: Josie more often, mainly just to see what he's up to when they're not both at the school.
Who's the most creative when it comes to gifts: Josie, and Kaleb does try to protest that using magic on certain gifts is cheating, but he absolutely adores every single one of them, and how much effort she clearly puts into them. Especially when she makes him a daylight chain because he was going on about how it would just be nice to switch things up every now and then.
Who gets up first: Josie doesn't sleep that well to begin with, so she tends to wake up earlier no matter what. She'll just stay in bed with him, content, until he wakes up, smiles, and cuddles her properly until they have to move. Sometimes, she manages to fall back asleep.
Who suggests new things in bed: There have been a couple of ideas that Josie's had, but Kaleb throws out the most suggestions, usually in such a casual manner that she has to make sure she heard him right. A good few of them involve their supernatural abilities coming into play. She usually isn't opposed.
Who cries at movies: It takes a lot to make either of them cry at a movie, but when it gets to one of them, it gets to both of them.
Who gives unprompted massages: Kaleb. It's a natural instinct for him, noticing that Josie's stressing about something or other, and starts rubbing one of her shoulders or massaging the back of her hand. Once she gets used to letting someone take care of her, she starts relaxing into his touch right away.
Who fusses over the other when they're sick: Josie can't help it. She cares about people and she looks after them, that's what she does. So, if Kaleb happens to get sick from some accidental ingestion of vervain or they're waiting for Hope's blood for a stray werewolf bite, Josie doesn't leave his side for a second unless it's to get something for him. When Josie herself gets sick, she tries to assure him that she's fine, but he still manages to sway her into staying in bed for a couple of hours while he stays with her, watching something and laying a damp washcloth along her forehead to keep down a fever.
Who gets jealous easiest: Josie is working on it. She still has her insecurities, but she knows that she can't let them control her or mess with their relationship, and Kaleb has never shown any interest in anyone else, no matter how much they flirt with him.
Who has the most embarrassing taste in music: I don't think either of them have embarrassing taste, to be honest. They both seem like they have pretty good taste in music and would probably bond over it, chilling out during the evening, listening to some playlist that one of them made.
Who collects something unusual: Not unusual, per se, but Josie's window and pretty much her entire side of her and Lizzie's room is covered with plants. They're all teeming with magic. Kaleb has a collection of vinyl records but no record player, and some questionable slippers that Josie finds amusing. There always seems to be some shark theme with his favourite movies, she's noticed.
Who takes the longest to get ready: Kaleb takes the longest, for sure, but Josie doesn't mind waiting a couple extra minutes for him.
Who is the most tidy and organised: Both of them are very organized, very tidy people. Things don't necessarily have to look perfect, but they do both have a habit of tidying things up and complaining just a little bit when someone makes a mess.
Who gets most excited about the holidays: Kaleb is a sucker for the holidays. Josie already loves them, but he gets in the holoday spirit far faster than she does, practically the second that they're out of October. It's adorable and she loves going to the Grill with him for whatever holiday-themed special they have.
Who is the big spoon/little spoon: Kaleb is the big spoon and Josie is the little. It's comfortable and they both enjoy it.
Who gets most competitive when playing games or sports: Both of them are fairly competitive, and when on the same team, a little intimidating. Sure to win, too. Of course, when they're on opposing teams... things get interesting.
Who starts the most arguments: Kaleb, mainly because he just doesn't care what people think and will happily disagree with them if he's certain they're wrong.
Who suggests that they buy a pet: Kaleb. They get a fish. Its name is Rupert.
What couple traditions do they have: Probably something like watching Jaws or Hocus Pocus around the same time every year. They enjoy marathoning Harrry Potter and Star Wars during the holidays.
What tv shows do they watch together: The Walking Dead, Supernatural, NCSI and pretty much every CSI. True Crime documentaries.
What other couples do they hang out with: Sebastian and MG, Hope and Maya, Lizzie and Ethan
How they spend their time together as a couple: Discussing conspiracies. Just lying in one of their beds (preferably Kaleb's as Josie is sick of Lizzie being able to barge in at every moment) watching some show. Kaleb likes to draw and Josie will sometimes just sit and watch or study. They enjoy taking walks, especially outside of Mystic Falls, and one of them always ensures they have a camera on them.
Who made the first move: Josie. She surprised even herself. It was just an admittance that she liked him, and she wasn't expecting him to really react, but then he said he liked her too. Lizzie's still snug that it was her who gave Josie the push to take the risk, even if she continues to disapprove of every single one of her relationships.
Who brings flowers home: Technically both of them. Kaleb enjoys how Josie's face lights up when he does it, and Josie has a habit of using magic to make the ones in the garden grow so that she can give some to him.
Who is the best cook: Kaleb, by far. Josie does know how to cook, but her knowledge is fairly limited. Kaleb thinks it's adorable when she huffs about burning something.

Holiday Feast - The final round-up
Happy New Year! Our holiday feast challenge came to an end on January 10. We hope you all had a good start to 2019. Thank you for sticking with us through 2018! We′re looking forward to discussing, enjoying and sharing our excitement for the Legendarium and for Silmarillion fanfiction with you in this new year. In this final round-up, we′re going to give you the answers to the scavenger hunt for the Starter course and celebrate the participants who joined our little feast by reading, commenting, writing stories and meta, or producing fanart and playlists. Thanks for joining us – we hope you enjoyed your meal!
Reading
For the starter course, we gave you a couple of first lines to search. Participants didn′t have to find them all, but discover at least one and read the corresponding chapter (or work). For everyone who didn′t manage to hunt down all of them and is curious, here are the answers:
There was a cold wind blowing off the North Star when they got near the world’s edge, and the chilly spray of the waterfalls splashed over them. ~Roverandom, Chapter 4
In that time were made those things that afterwards were most renowned of all the works of the Elves. ~The Silmarillion, "Of the Silmarils and the Unrest of the Noldor"
’Well, master, we’re in a fix and no mistake,’ said Sam Gamgee. ~The Two Towers, "The Taming of Sméagol"
In the South from sleep | to swift fury / a storm was stirred, | striding northward / over leagues of water | loud with thunder / and roaring rain | it rushed onward. ~The Fall of Arthur, III
Ægidius de Hammo was a man who lived in the midmost parts of the Island of Britain. ~Farmer Giles of Ham
It is said that Beren and Lúthien returned to the northern lands of Middle-earth, and dwelt together for a time as living man and woman; and they took up again their mortal form in Doriath. ~The Silmarillion, "Of the Fifth Battle: Nirnaeth Arnoediad"
In the days of the Dark Kings, when a man could still walk dry-shod from the Rising of the Sun to the Sea of its setting, there lived in the fenced town of his people in the green hills of Agar an old man, by name Hazad Longbeard. ~The Peoples of Middle-earth, "Tal-Elmar"
Grundy, Zdenka, Independence1776, StarSpray and Nienna have let us know that they′ve completed the full Reading menu. Great job! Mysterious_jedi completed the cheese course. Well done!
Commenting
Of course, everybody who commented on at least one of the fanworks created for this challenge took a nibble of the cheese course for this aspect of the menu. Accordingly, Silver Trails, StarSpray, Kimaracretak, Himring, Gabriel, CeeCee, BaileyBoyBee, Dawn Felagund, Oshun and yours truly have already earned a Commenting stamp for this challenge.
Grundy, Zdenka, Independence1776 and Nienna have managed to complete the entire Commenting menu. Again, congratulations! If you, too, have completed one of the Reading or Commenting prompts – or even completed all five courses – and we′ve somehow missed it or you haven′t told us yet, please drop us a comment here or on LJ, send us an ask or mail us at [email protected].
***
We were hoping for a splendid array of responses for our Artwork, Meta and Writing prompts, and you did not disappoint. 38 pieces have been newly created for these aspects of the challenge – a spectacular holiday buffet that we present you now. If you enjoy an author's work, please consider dropping them a comment to let them know!
Artwork
Starter:
Gil-galad with Palantír  by hennethgalad.
"They’re out there." - first line of ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest". (digital art)
Arien/Ilmarë Playlist by Nienna324.
It is a little harder to fit the prompts with fanmixes, but it sort of fits in three ways. One, some of it takes place before or in the beginning of time. Two, it could be thought of as the start of a relationship or at least a few of the songs are. And three, my prompt for this course was "It was a pleasure to burn"-Ray Bradbury. This made me think of Fëanor, but also Arien.
Fish:
Tropical Waters Uinen by Hrymfaxe (watercolour)
Temperate Waters Uinen by Hrymfaxe (watercolour)
Númenor Playlist by Nienna324.
A Youtube playlist for the Art challenge of the Holiday Feast Fish Course.(fanmix)
Main:
Never Fade Away by Nienna324.
A Youtube playlist for the rebellion and exile of the Noldor. (fanmix)
Dessert:
And She Might Know Me Well by Kimaracretak.
This mix is dedicated to Elleth, the one who got me into the world of Tolkien-fandom-on-the-internet in the first place. She requested something with Goldberry femslash, because "eldritch river spirits are always good". A Goldberry/Lady of the Blue Brooch sad eldritch ex-girlfriends mix, set in my AU where the Lady becomes a Black Rider! (fanmix)
Maglor and the Twins Playlist by Nienna324.
A gift for independence1776. (fanmix)
Cheese:
Beren and Lúthien Playlist by Nienna324.
I know Beren and Lúthien were listed for the reading challenge, but as far as "scene that you think they would ham up the most" is concerned this would be it, so I think it fits either way. (fanmix)
Meta
Starter:
A New Day: The Dawn of the Second Age by Grundy.
While the Silmarillion includes the Akallabêth, and an account of the line of Elros is included in the Unfinished Tales, very little is written about the early years of the Second Age. (Part of the Collection "Food for Thought: A Meta Feast")
Fish:
Naming the Sea-Elves by Grundy.
The text is concerned primarily with the Noldor and presents most events from their point of view. Nowhere is this more readily apparent than in the treatment of the third group of elves to undertake the Great Journey – first named as the ‘Teleri’. (Part of the Collection "Food for Thought: A Meta Feast") Main:
Blinded by the Light by Grundy.
If there is one thing that stands out about the Noldor, it is how important light is to them. (Part of the Collection "Food for Thought: A Meta Feast")
Fate and Free Will in Arda by Lyra.
An informal bibliography with tongue-in-cheek commentary.
Dessert:
Sugar in Middle-earth by Grundy.
We don’t have much to base our knowledge on in the First or Second Ages, but The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings give glimpses of the food of late Third Age Middle-earth, including sweet dishes and desserts. (Part of the Collection "Food for Thought: A Meta Feast")
Sweet Speculations by Grundy.
Random headcanon that may or may not be in any way defensible. (Part of the Collection "Food for Thought: A Meta Feast")
Cheese:
What It Says On The Tin by Grundy.
I searched out all mentions of cheese I could find in the books. (Part of the Collection "Food for Thought: A Meta Feast")
Writing
Starter:
Moments of Healing by eris_of_imladris.
Nerdanel receives comfort and healing from an unexpected source.
The season will not wait by quillingmesoftly.
Elwing does paperwork.
All That May Become by Grundy.
After the Sack of Eregion, the situation for the elves is dire. Celeborn's army is on the verge of being caught by Sauron when unexpected help arrives.
Negotiations by arafinwean.
Haleth looks at Caranthir and wonders what he's lost.
A Trace of Light by Silver Trails.
Glorfindel misses his cousins and feels lonely after Fëanor is exiled to Formenos.
Lovely, Dark and Deep by StarSpray.
Elwë gets sidetracked on his way to visit Finwë.
Fish:
From Sleep to Swift Fury by Raiyana.
Ossë's rebellion.
Missing the Past by StarSpray.
"But no, it is not ruins or pottery I am interested in. They told me that Maglor was living on Himling." (also covers some Main Course themes)
Times of Change by hennethgalad.
Ereinion Gil-galad sets out for the Falas.
Long Time Passing by Grundy.
Eärwen's thoughts on a journey to Alqualondë prior to the War of Wrath.
Music and Song by Silver Trails.
Little Maglor hears Omar's and Salmar's music for the first time in his life.
Main:
Kinship by hennethgalad.
Gil-galad, Idril Celebrindal and Celebrimbor meet on the Isle of Balar.
By Any Other Name by Grundy.
After the Sack of Eregion, Celebrían is trying to reach the valley where her father's forces have taken refuge. The situation is grim until she gets some unexpected help.
Light and Darkness by Silver Trails.
Caranthir and Aegnor meet again after the crossing of the Helcaraxë.
Dessert:
Yule 3018 by hennethgalad.
The Fellowship have just left Imladris... (for anneway-nithiniel)
The Dance of the Lights by Narya.
Aredhel and Egalmoth share a quiet moment on the Grinding Ice. (for Tolkien Secret Santa 2018)
Smoldering by Grundy.
Finrod discovers at least one family feud he'd hoped was settled hasn't been laid to rest yet. (for gabriel-seven)
The King′s Peace by Idrils Scribe.
In the dead of Hithlum's icy winter, a battered Maedhros restores what peace he can to himself and his people, much to his brothers' chagrin. (for Dawn Felagund)
Still a Child by Silver Trails.
Findekáno wants to go out and meet his cousins. (for Mor2904)
Cheese:
Ode to Gil-galad. by hennethgalad.
Cheesy ode for the cheese course of Holiday Feast.
The Cheese Stands Alone by Grundy.
The twins thought Arwen would enjoy the lesson on Beren and Luthien. They were rather surprised...
Writing a Song by Silver Trails.
Daeron reflects about love and time. Maglor tries to help him.
As you can see, Nienna324 has created a fanmix for every course of the Artwork menu and Silver Trails has written a piece of fic for all five Writing course.
Hennethgalad has created content for every course across different prompt sets.
Grundy, on top of her achievements in Reading and Commenting, has written an amazing six pieces of meta and five stories for the Meta and Writing menues. Awesome work!

11/11/11 Writing Tags
Rules: Answer 11 questions, ask 11 questions, tag 11 people.
Tagging: @anonymous-ivplay @mediocre-prose @thescribesloft @depressionbeanbag @adenhamcreations @atbwrites @zburatorii @farrradays @monstrouswrites @mvcreates @leave-her-a-tome @inexorableblob
Questions asked by @writer-by-the-window (Thank you so much for tagging me!):
1. Did you outline your wip or are you writing by the seat of your pants?
Well I have a general outline that I usually follow! But then sometimes I have an even better, crazier idea so I switch my outline to that new version!
2. Who’s your favorite character to write about and why?
Many will be surprised to hear this but Vestory (le evil bad guy) is my favorite character to write about. Because in some sense, Vestory is not wrong, he is just misguided and to dive into the depths of his mind and the way he thinks to make those good intentions become rotten with evil is something quite fascinating to me. Plus he has one of the best character development plotlines in my entire book!
3. What’s your favorite medium for storytelling other than novels(TV, movies, video games, podcasts, etc)?
Depends on whether I have time or not. So movies if I am aiming for a quick watch, TV series if I am aiming for a long , mindnumbing watch.
4. How long have you been working on your WIP?
Well the initial characters were created five years ago. The main idea and theme was created three years ago along with the first draft two years ago.... Professional writing started about two or three months ago.
5. What are some of your least favorite tropes in fiction?
Gal loves guy just because... like literally no other reason. Along with the idea that somehow the entire planet is the same race or same sexuality or same religion or same mindset.
6. Do you have any writing role models? If so, who are they and why?
I have a couple. Like Sarah J. Maas. Have you seen how this woman makes you literally live in the land of the Fae through just ink?
Or how George R. R. Martin built so many complex characters and foreshadowing like omfg
Or Gillian Flynn who creates mind-numbing thriller books that are the main reason why I have insomnia because I can’t seem to put them down!
Or how Suzanne Collins portrays the modern world in such an insane fiction world in The Hunger Games.
Like holy fucks
7. What do you like the most about your writing?
I have no idea... I am very self-conscious about my writing.
8. What are some songs that you have on your writing playlist right now?
Born Ready by Zayde Wolf
Higher by The Score
Everyday by Ariana Grande
Youngblood by 5SOS
High Hopes by P!ATD
My My My! by Troye Sivan
9. Do you have any characters based off of real people?
Yes. Elijah and Ajax are based off my godfather and his twin brother. [Post about this is here.]
Kahera is based on my cousin who is such an amazing, fearless person.
Tut is based on the real life King Tut along with a very dear friend of mine (because they are both luxurious as fuck)
Cahya Cysgod is based on a classmate of mine.
And many more...
10. How would you describe the aesthetic of your wip?
Galaxy. Space. Night Sky. Stars. Nebullas. Silver. Black. Purple.
11. Favorite line you’ve written?
Still debating but so far it is “With a fisted hand, they all banged against their chests, right over their Elluminum hearts and as one they raised their weapons – swords, spears, bows, knives, claws – in salute to the statue of the winged Queen who died for their lives and every single warrior had sworn to himself, promising whatever gods that existed, the galaxies that brought this fate to their precious galaxy Ellumina, that they will pay dearly for this. War was coming... and Elluminums were hungry for the blood of revenge and freedom.”
Here are my questions:
What made you come up with that WIP?
Which character was the first one you created and what are your thoughts on them?
What’s the main genre of your WIP\ Works?
Ho do you usually deal with writers’ block?
Which book\ book series is your favorite?
Favorite character you have ever created and why?
Does the personality of your OC come to you first or their appearance or role in the story?
What’s your favorite OTP and why?
How long does it usually get you to deal with a plot hole?
Silliest writing mistake you have ever done.
Favorite Writer and why?

Novel Prep: Stars
I was tagged by @arynneva!
First Look
1. Describe your novel in 1-2 sentences (elevator pitch)
A criminal and the mechanic she’s kidnapped start out on what seems to be a short adventure, but as they get to know each other, secrets are revealed and enemies are met, forcing them into a fight with their country in the balance.
2. How long do you plan for your novel to be? (Is it a novella, single book, book series, etc.)
This is (I hope) the first in a trilogy, with a couple stories expanding off of it because there are some side characters in here whom I think definitely deserve to have their stories told.
3. What is your novel’s aesthetic?
Secrets admitted at midnight underneath the stars while avoiding all the shit of the world around you.
4. What other stories inspire your novel?
@marielubooks‘s Legend Trilogy was definitely a major inspiration. Cee, one of my main characters, is basically the Day/June lovechild lmao
ALSO HOW COOL IS IT THAT THERE’S GONNA BE A BOOK 4? AHHHH
5. Share 3+ images that give a feel for your novel
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(All of these images were stolen from Pinterest btw)
6. Who is your protagonist?
I have two!
Cee - A criminal who’s supposedly ruthless and cruel and has a dark past she hides from everything.
Kyle - A mechanic who is working his ass off to support his family and isn’t used to doing things for himself
7. Who is their closest ally?
Besides each other, Cee and Kyle rely a lot on the Specialists later on in the book. Among these Specialists, the most important people are:
-Sixilia, a mischievous assassin whose past is dangerously intertwined with Cee’s
-Cat, a disgraced noble hardened by the struggles she’s gone through as both a trans woman and a mutate (my version of mutants lol)
-Blake, a hyperactive, happy-go-lucky disgraced soldier
-Hanna, a ex-gang member who’s lost everyone in her life, including her parents and girlfriend (who she was planning to marry)
8. Who is their enemy?
Daniela, a seventeen-year-old world-renowned genius, corrupted by an international organization hell-bent on destroying the American government.
9. What do they want more than anything?
Cee just wants to escape her past and be her own person, independent of the reputations she’s been forced to uphold in both the lives she’s led
Kyle just wants his family to be safe, to honor his mother’s memory, to let his sister live a life with choices, and to just be able to live.
10. Why can’t they have it?
Because Cee is burdened by the reputation of the infamous, cruel criminal she’s shaped herself out to be in her quest for respite and Kyle is struggling to work around the shitty governmental systems that make it difficult for a teenage boy to support his depressed, disabled father and toddler sister.
11. What do they wrongly believe about themselves?
Cee believes that she’s undeserving of love because of the things she’s gone through and the things she’s been forced to do in her life as a criminal and Kyle thinks his chance for a life outside of supporting his family is shot, seeing as he dropped out of school and has lost his chance at his own dreams.
12. Draw your protagonist! (Or share a description)
Cee and Kyle were actually drawn by @hestray, who I am very lucky to have! She’s my sounding board and listens to my ramble about this all the time!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Plot Points
13. What is the internal conflict?
The internal conflict revolves a lot about family, about what we owe to them and what we owe to ourselves. There’s also some classic morality about the value of life and death, and a sexuality crisis in there too for good measure.
14. What is the external conflict?
Daniela and her army, trying to dismantle the government, which would do the exact opposite of what she wants to do: put mutates on equal playing grounds with regular humans
15. What is the worst thing that could happen to your protagonist?
For Cee, if you told her that her brothers hated her, if you told her that her brothers had always hated her, if they told her they hated her... she’d be utterly wrecked she is utterly wrecked
Kyle would be a mess if somebody took his sister from him. Four years, he’s been fighting to keep her, to provide for her and give her a good life, giving up his own in the process. If she was taken from him, everything he’d done would be for nothing, and he’d be an absolute mess.
16. What secret will be revealed that changes the course of the story?
Cee’s real identity is a big one, because it’s a lot about her connections to Daniela and how big of a role she really plays in this whole “destroy the government” scheme.
17. Do you know how it ends?
Couple schemes, a few screaming matches, and a death that I hopes rocks people to their cores. I’d like to say I’ve got a decent idea, though things have changed.
Bits and Bobs
18. What is the theme?
I said this before for number 13, but it’s really about what we owe to our families and what we owe to ourselves. Cee and Kyle have very different approaches to their families, but both of them have made drastic decisions revolving around them. They each need to learn the balance between making decisions for their families and making decisions for themselves.
19. What is a reoccurring symbol?
The first one off the top of my head would be Cee’s hair, which in the beginning is long as a symbol to her freedom (because when she was young, it was kept short for practicality). At one point, she chops it off as a show that she’s given up that freedom and is back to working under someone’s thumb.
20. Where is the story set? (Share a description!)
The story is set in 2364, in a post-WWIII American Empire. The soldiers who fought in the war twenty years prior are traumatized and injured and their own children were genetically mutated thanks to the nuclear weaponry used during the fighting, causing them to grow up feared and discriminated against thanks to the deadly abilities that followed.
21. Do you have any images or scenes in your mind already?
I have a ton of scenes in my mind and nearly a hundred pages written for just this iteration (which is the fourth so far). This isn’t even counting all the expansions I’ve scribbled down between drafts.
22. What excited you about this story?
I’m really excited to tell these characters’ stories, first and foremost! Each of them, the main characters and the Specialists, have a lot that they’ve gone through and a lot to tell the world about it.
It’s also a test of my abilities to write heavier topics. Cee in particular has gone through a lot of shit, so it’s new ground for me to be tackling some of this stuff, and I hope I do it justice and write it in a way that allows people to understand this kind of stuff.
23. Tell us about your usual writing method!
Usually writing for me starts with whatever idea’s in my head for the moment. If it’s a scene I’ve been bouncing around for a while, it might have a song on my playlist, which I’ll then play over and over and over until the scene’s written to my liking.
Props to anyone who actually read the whole post lmfao. It’s a lot of my own bullshit, but if you’re actually interested in my story and characters, I’m begging you to let me know! Always craving that validation
NOW FOR TAGS!
@thegirlfairytalesforgot is the only one I can think of at the moment, but if any of my lovely followers have a passion project they’re working on, feel free to do the challenge and tag me when you post it! I’m always looking to read other peoples’ ideas!
