Kurayamitale | The Crumbling Chronicles

3 additional short tales to fill in the universe of KurayamiTale. If you want to read the main story, scroll way further down. Please enjoy. :)

◇ HEADACHE

A little time has passed from the recent events and frisk continued living with Chara from now on. Over the past few weeks, Frisk doesn't manage to sleep well at night. He keeps having nightmares about what happened to him in the Underground, sometimes even throughout the day, recurring headaches and still hears voices from time to time. One morning frisk tells chara about what happened and how he currently feels, chara takes some time to think "We could talk to some warriors, they all knew my father so maybe we could ask them. Since your mother was part of the incident that broke the harmony between humans and monsters, maybe whatever the syringe had is now causing you Problems too." suggests Chara.

Frisk and Chara take it upon themselves to question some of the old warriors that were part of the war, but most of them did not have any connection to sun directly, though one of them knew a little more than the others and said "i have never taken into consideration to talk to sun about anything, we were given orders and these orders were always followed. Although one thing i noticed is that our mages used to sometimes spend a little more time with sun, he apparently needed their help to better his fire magic but more than that i sincerely dont know, sorry."

With that, Frisk and Chara knew where to look. They made their way towards the old mages of the village. Most of them told us exactly what the warrior said, they helped sun with his magic and trained a little but one of the mages stood out of all of them. That specific mage, was the elder mage known as Sairel, the most experienced of them all. He has not left his house ever since sun had passed away.

Frisk and Chara knocked on Sairels door and checked all windows but didn't get any response. Since this was their only hope of evidence, they decided to break the door open and enter the house. As Frisk and Chara walk through the house, they notice how messy and unorganized it was. While they're searching through the house, Frisk suddenly hears a noise coming from what semt to be the cellar. They quickly walk down and ready themselves for dangers, though what they find sends a chill down their spine. They encounter a room of what seems to be some sort of laboratory.

They see many strange things such as cages, cabels, magic staff's and some glass containers. The closer frisk gets to all these weird items, the stronger his headache gets, its like they're emitting some sort of energy. As they continue looking through all the stuff, someone pops up behind all the containers and scares them from behind, its Sairel.

He shouts "Get out of here! Did you guys come here to take my life too??" Sairel is wielding a scythe looking magic weapon but his grip on it is very shaky. "Calm down, we're only here to ask you some questions." Chara reassures him, but Sairel doesn't trust it. As chara takes a step closer he swing his scythe at her. "Dont come closer! J- just tell me what you want!" He shouts. Frisk is very stressed and can't handle all this pressure Sairel is putting on him, he faints. "Frisk?!" says Chara. Sairel lowers his weapon a little and just looks at them. Chara is confused and tries to check on what happened.

"What the hell did you do?!" shouts chara at Sairel. "Me? I didn't do anything to your weird friend." He responds. As the two are arguing frisk gets slowly back on his feet but his eye color has changed to red again. Chara and Sairel are stunned at frisks appearance. "...frisk?" says chara as she grabs his shoulder. That's when Frisk slaps her hand away and swings his hands at her. "Frisk?! What has gotten into you" shouts chara as she tries defending herself from frisks swings. Sairel quickly grabs frisks arms from behind and throws him into one of the labs cages without hesitation, locking him in. "Wait!" says Chara. "Did you inject him with- no, it cant be. Why is he suddenly so aggressive?"

Chara looks in confusion at Sairel "i have no idea, i didn't inject him with anything." says chara. "Then why did you guys come here?" asks Sairel. "We wanted to ask what kind of affiliations you have with my Father, the monster my father poisoned killed frisks parents and since then he has been having headaches, nightmares and been hearing voices but it has never escalated to this." responds Chara. "Wait, this kid is the son of Risk?" says Sairel, surprised. "Who is Risk?" Chara asks confused. "Risk and me used to lead the human army years before your father showed up, he was the greatest fighter and i was the greatest mage in our village during the time."

"One day your father showed up here alone, we welcomed him with open arms and let him live here for years, he joined the army, had a wife and got you. Now your mother got terribly sick at one point to the point that even our magic couldn't help her permanently. She eventually passed away and after that, your father has barely spoken with anyone." says sairel. "Then... why didn't you stop him from becoming the leader?" asks Chara.

"Me and the other mages only helped him to get better with magic but one day he asked if he could talk to me in private. During the time, i was experiencing a lot with human and monster souls, i found out how weak monster souls are and that their bodies couldn't handle determination through multiple older cases of some monsters producing it naturally, their bodies just melt. When your father arrived, we talked a little and i told him about it too. My plan was to create a medicine, something that could make monster souls equal to ours and let their souls persist after death too. He didn't like it, he acted like he wanted to help me and we gathered here in the cellar to start. Our plan was to create our own determination, a determination just like we have in our souls but more compatible with monsters, artificial determination.

We both used magic to absorb small bits of determination from our own souls, changing it little by little and then combining it with dust from a monster that had falled down. At first our artificial determination hasn't shown any diffrence from the original and was just slowly flickering red. But then your father experimented more on it, even dunking in a small amount of his own blood, that's when the red glow effect continued. I was surprised and wanted to share the news and begin testing ut instantly but then your father stormed off, taking it with him and leaving without a response. I didn't think much about it and thought he would spread the word for me but in the very next day... the harmony was broken.

I can only speculate that he injected that stuff into the monster but... instead of it melting, it became furious. If your friend here is truly son of Risk then he probably has some of that stuff flowing trough his own soul right now, causing this reaction. Though you did say that he doesn't react like this usually..." explained Sairel. Chara looked concerned at frisk, he was slowly losing conscious again after biting the cages metal bar the whole time. Sairel looked down at frisk and suggests something to chara "i say we should kill him before its too late, he could be dangerous to us all if his artificial determination should develop further, we dont know what else it could do." "Are you nuts?! Im not going to let you just kill frisk like that" chara shouts and opens the cage door. "Just- sigh im gonna take care of him." says chara and leaves. They make their way back home for today and chara makes frisk some tea to relax.

◇ MYSTERIES

Frisk wakes up in the middle of the night still having a lot of trouble sleeping. He decides to sneak out and make run to the underground. Papyrus is currently trying to get back into some of his old hobbies but has a very difficult time actually doing so. After some time, frisk comes running, papyrus is surprised because he didn't expect to see frisk. "Human! What brings you here?" Frisk stops and looks up at Papyrus and tells him that he hasn't been feeling too well since he's been here in the undeground for the very first time. Papyrus stops for a second to think about it. Frisk then asks papyrus what he does when feeling stressed. Papyrus seems a little startled by the question "St- Stressed? Oh, you see im not very sure. Last time i felt a lot of stress... Undyne had died, she was a very strong warrior here in the Underground. This spear i wield is actually hers.

You see, human, i never wanted to fight anyone, really. I always see the good in people, i really do, even after i lost my arm in war... i still had hope that somewhere all these humans still had some good in them and could still be helped by me! th- the great... papyrus. But when we found undynes spear and i held onto it... its almost as if i could feel exactly what Undyne felt when she was fighting them. Their leader... there was no good in him, he didn't even do it for all humans, he just did it because it felt good hurting us. Every time i held Undynes spear, i felt a part of her still holding onto it, assisting me in battle, telling me to fight back and to not let anyone else die! But, recently when your leader died... It was gone. Almost like she finally found peace. Thats when all my stress cleared itself too, it felt better and im happy we made it. Now, it sounds like you have more of a inner problem, and i think my brother can help you just perfectly. Sans has been dissappearing quite a lot recently but if you call for him in snowdin, im sure he'll be there!"

Frisks nods, shaking papyrus hand to thank him and then makes his way to snowdin. "Oh! Also, next time we meet, bring me one of those cool human battle masks made out of paper you keep wearing on your head too!!" Frisks fingers start freezing more as he enters snowdin. As frisk walks through snowdin he sees a spider making food for a monster kid. The monster kid takes a small suspicious look at frisk and ignores him afterward. Eventually, frisk enters deeper into the forest and calls out to sans. After a minute of silence, sans appears. "Hey kid, been a little while. Also, why are you wearing that paper bag again?" Frisk opens his mouth to speak but sans interrupts him. "I know why you're here. There is something wrong with your soul." Frisk nods and explains to sans what chara and him had found out about the incident that happened. Sans leans against a tree and responds "That would explain it a little more.

The first time we met, you know why i didn't just kill you then and there as soon as you were incapable of fighting? I noticed that something was wrong with you, i could feel it. Now, if what you're saying is fully accurate then the day you began losing your mind, the humans that died here seem to have taken control over you and used you when you were at your weakest. Your "determination" gave them a way to influence and interact with you."

Frisk is clueless on what to do or say. He looks up at sans and asks how he can stop this. Sans turns and faces the forest. "Now, i find it strange that its still happening. There must still be some unsatisfied spirits around. Either way, i can help you." Frisk light up upon hearing this and waits for sans to tell him how. "You and i are very different, but we share inner problems, problems with our mentality and spirit. I managed to overcome mine over the years to a point in which i almost feel absolutely nothing. You know, kid, have you ever wondered how many alternative versions there could be of a universe? Believe it or not, I have recently mastered my spirit to a point that lets me see and, with enough focus, even travel throughout these.

I have met others and seen what our souls are truly capable of doing. The amount of individuals that have killed others just to get stronger themselves... is astonishing. Now, i killed lots of humans during the war and i can still feel their souls granting me power, but, i learned how to overcome their strength. I learned how to find peace in the darkness. I lost the capability of seeing with my eyes, but i learned how to see with my soul. If i never took this path back then... i would've become a true monster beyond strength. So, let me help you now to avoid this path together." Frisk takes a deep breath while also trying to process what sans was saying. Sams puts his hand in front of frisks chest. Suddenly frisk sees his surroundings get darker. "Dont worry, just go with it."

"You're going to temporarily lose your vision now and be surrounded by complete darkness. Its only an illusion. If you focus, you can break out of it." Frisks heart starts to pump faster as he hears sans voice grow more distant with time. Hes scared. Frisk takes a deep breath and remembers what sans said. Currently he can feel his whole body trying to push him to the ground like if he was carrying bricks.

His eyes are slowly flickering a tone of red and his soul is once again overwhelming him with "determination" frisk looks around hearing similar voices. He closes his eyes and takes multiple deep breaths again. The more he does the quiter the voices get. His soul is still itching and his eyes still glow a bright red. Frisk stands up straight and fights against the itching feeling of the voices trying to influence him. Finally, he opens his eyes and to his surprise, the dark surrounding him was already gone. Sans stands there uncertain if frisk made it because his eyes are still glowing red.

Frisk speaks up and says that he feels relieved but still strong. "That corrupted determination you hold seems to grant you power. If you're too stressed while using it, then the spirits of dead people will want to take advantage of this strong flow of determination you're emitting. To us monsters, determination is dangerous, too much of it makes our bodies melt because of our weak souls. That fake determination the humans made, it does pretty much what it says. It stops us monsters from melting and grants us persistence after death.

But too much of it seems to make us crazy. it's like endless pain that makes you feel like you're dying, but you're not. In response we lash out at others instead, hoping it will come to an end. That's what i understood from it." Frisk takes another deep breath and his eyes go back to normal, he instantly almsoy falls to his knees because of how dizzy this just made him. "In the future when this happens, always stay focused. Otherwise you might hurt someone."

Frisk thanks sans one last time, he tries to hug him but sans simply avoids it. With his now acquired knowledge, he walks back up to the surface and makes his way back to charas house. He finally feels better and hopes to continue maintaining the control over his body in the future. Frisk tells chara how he felt better and what the cause of his reaction even was to begin with. "That explains it then. Im happy everything has finally gotten better."

◇ SUNSET

A week passes...

Sairel and very few other warriors have been imprisoned for having had a big impact on the war in some kind of way or still trying to follow suns beliefs. Sairel doesn't blame them. He shouldn't have trusted sun with something so unstable and new to begin with. Toriel is in the throne room, teaching her son asriel how to eventually become a king in the future. "One day all these people need a good leader that truly fits the position, dont you want that?." Says toriel. "But who is going to take care of all the flowers and plants when im king?" "Hahaha, who said you can't be a king and take care of them at the same time?" Asriel smiles. "Okay then!" He replies and gives toriel a warm hug. Frisk and Chara coincidentally show up as well.

"Hey there!" Frisk looks a little awkward when facing asriel. Asriel nervously speaks up. "Oh, Uhm, howdy! M- My name is Asriel. You're frisk, right? Im sorry we haven't met each other very well since the time you first arrived here... hehe. You really scared me... and for good reason!" Frisk laughs at asriels nervousness and apologizes too. Asriel then looks over to chara. "And you must be Chara, correct? Sans and papyrus told us about you two to reassure us that you guys weren't a threat." Chara smiles. "Nice to meet you, Asriel! I overheard you seem to be going to be the future king? Is that true." Asriel looks a little surprised and responds "oh, well i haven't decided quite yet but it seems to be the case yeah." Chara is glad to hear that and answers quickly. "Perfect! You see i never had a real reason to be a warrior, my father always forced me. But since you're going to be the king, how about me being your future Guard? I can recruit new people and protect you!."

Asriel gasps. "Whoa, you would really do that for me?." Chara nods. "Yeah! how about you, frisk, do you want to join our future golden kingdom!?" Frisk smiles nervously and shakes his head, he says that its better not to. Frisks opinion has drastically changed about becoming a fighter since they met. Toriel laughs a lot as these two walk away, brainstorming more ideas for the future. Frisk then walks off continuing through the underground. On his way he encounters a orange dinosaur looking monster he hadn't seen before, staring into the distance.

The dino notices frisk and waves shyly "Hey... uhm, human. You- sorry, im Alphys." Frisk waves back. "I heard a little about you, thanks for helping us monsters out. It means a lot." Alphys looks at frisk for a second and then speaks up again. "I-I... I heard about your soul. it's different from uhm other humans because its determination isn't natural. I always wanted to learn more about souls because the way they work is just so interesting, dont you think? I never had any reason to experiment with them but i wish i could, what possibilities there might be. ...Anyways, im talking a little too much. hehehe, i should really get going. I always wanted to build a big laboratory but i never got to fully finish it yet, so i will get to that now. Cya!" Frisk waves to Alphys and continues on his way.

He then passes by Waterfall, where he sees papyrus training with two other monsters. He looks happy and busy. Frisk doesn't interrupt them. Sans is coincidentally around too, watching over them, before mysteriously disappearing again. Frisk takes a little more time walking around. Everything in the Underground is slowly beginning to look much more comfortable and friendly than before. Humans can't undo the damage that is already done, and monsters can't live in grief for the rest of their lives. Frisk is sure that eventuallly, somewhere in the future, both races will be able to fully forgive and live together in harmony again. He returns to the surface, chara right behind him, and they sit down, gazing upon the sunset. "So... what are you going to do for the future?" asks chara. Frisk looks up at the sky and thinks for a decently long time before eventually responding.

He wants to help people and make sure that even in dark times, there is always something you can hold onto. But for now, living with all his friends is more than he could ever ask for. Almost... like a family. Chara is glad to hear that. "Im sure everyone is going to take good care of us." Chara frowns for a second. "You know, if we never exposed my fathers lies and all these horrible things he's done, then... i would've probably joined him and his army at some point. That's what i was trained for, even if i never truly wanted to. To us all, he was almost like a savior for our race. But in reality, it was all just a lie." Chara regains her smile. "Regardless of things, i shouldn't look back on that and im happy that in the end, we can all be together again and hopefully look out for a bright future."

A Court of Mist and Fury

or The Beginning of the End

hi & hello fellow book-lovers and/or fans of the ACOTAR/ACOMAF-series. I have recently finished A Court of Mist and Fury and can't stop thinking about a bunch of different aspects of the story. So after three days of contemplation I have finally decided to blast my thoughts out onto tumblr just to get them out of my brain. You are more than welcomed to read through them & interact with them in any way you like, but please bear in mind that these are my personal opinions & that I do not have to agree with you. (and this should go without saying but I am not hating on Sarah J. Maas). It's just what I thought while and after reading it. So don't expect something too based here but still read it to the end hehe :)

Let's start with some characters shall we? How about our High Lord of the Spring Court first, since I know that he is not liked by many lol So Tamlin, right...

...why does he turn to be the evil guy even before the third part of ACOMAF?

He broke as well Under the Mountain, probably even before because of having to risk his entire court to find a woman who could help him lift the curse but why does Tamlin not get the chance to heal like Feyre and/or Rhysand? He has done some dumb shit, i'll admit, and definitely treated Feyre wrong in so many ways before Rhys took her away. But why does he not get a chance to redeem himself? Why are his actions immediately labeled as bad when he is just as broken as many other characters in this book, when literally his whole character in the first book had been labeled as a protective person who had already lost so much in his life? I DONT WANT TO EXCUSE HIS BEHAVIOUR IN ACOMAF but isn't it to be expected that someone who is protective, broken and traumatised will not always act rationally when fearing something might happen to their loved ones? I guess my main issue here is that Rhysand (the best man in the entire series btw go argue with a wall), an equally traumatised, broken, protective person, gets to have healing moments, happiness and a found family (we love to see it, you go king) but the same attributes make Tamlin the bad guy.

Like from a plot-standpoint I totally get making him side with the enemy but wouldn't it have been way more impactful if it was out of actual hate towards Feyre and/or Rhysand? We as readers get told that Tamlin & Rhys do not like each other but throughout the main part of the book it mostly seems like Tamlin is not intervening at all (except for sending Lucien once after what feels like months?). If he was so heavily and undyingly in love with Feyre wouldn't there have been more attempts in various ways? It makes his appearance as a "traitor" seem so weak because we have not heard from him after the locked-in incident and Feyre's arrival at the Night Court. In fact I have completely forgotten about him after a few chapters and just got reminded when Feyre mentioned him.

I do have to say that I love this take on a love triangle. Feyre is not stuck between Tamlin and Rhysand because it is obvious who the better choice is and she chooses exactly that.

I am extremely interested to see how his character will evolve in the coming books but as for now it just feels like SJM wants to make the reader hate Tamlin to justify FeyrexRhysand even though their interactions alone in comparison to FeyrexTamlin are enough validation for the reader to prefer them (or at least they should if they know what a healthy relationship is). The reader gets enough reason from Feyre and her comparison of the two males already, why are we led to think/feel that Tamlin "slaughtered" Rhysands family, when Rhysand himself said that he doesn't know if Tamlin was part-taking beyond telling his father the location. Slaughtered is such a strong word, especially considering that Feyre goes on a killing spree to save Rhysand mere pages later, indeed slaughtering her enemies... Then she herself is thinking that Under the Mountain changed both her and Tamlin so much, that they were no longer a good fit for each other and I loved that! Show me more of Feyre actually comparing herself before and after Under the Mountain, how Rhysand treats her and what new role he offers her. Why does Tamlin need to be the root of all evil to justify Feyre's new relationship? And when will he get to heal?

ough im still thinking about orv, this is exactly what happened with mp100 honestly, where it makes you think about the message its sending and how its messages are being sent through the "unexpected" actions the characters are taking like showing compassion to enemies and never losing that core even as the plot progresses and starts getting more complicated

[10:58 PM]at no point have i ever felt that orv lost sight of the focus on human psychology or get bogged down with debates about redemption and whether someone "deserved" the fate they received (which is a very christianity-heavy subject might i add), but whether or not the person/character in the scenario has chosen to help them or abandon them completely

[11:04 PM]and the thing with dokja is that hes not your typical "yeah ill help you out of the good of my heart and bc im a nice person! ill always do that for any person in need no matter who it may be!"

[11:07 PM]so hes free to pick and choose who he wants to ally with and it wont be such an internal struggle to leave them behind when they act all superior or think they dont need him

[11:11 PM]huiwon is this lady who he saved from poisonous gas and later becomes one of his companions/friends, and he was like "do you want to be companions?" she was all "what? did you not consider me one this entire time?" and he was all "no, i actually have. i was just thinking that you might not have reciprocated the sentiment"

[11:16 PM]he wont leave behind someone who needs his help, but when someone clearly doesnt want to be his friend or just wants to manipulate him hes like "yeah ok bye" and later they get cursed by their own hubris, or not, he dont care, thats none of his business hes just a background character after all /j

well there is one exception which is junghyeok but that guy is literally THE main character of the story within orv, dokja knows literally every single little detail about this guy and he cant afford to have the dude die prematurely bc the plot isnt going his way in his current life/groundhogs day scenario

[11:28 PM]but also junghyeok is very quick to murder people he doesnt trust which is Not Ideal when dokja, once again, knows every detail of every one of his lives, past present and future

[11:30 PM]so he does kinda have to force junghyeok to work with him even though they both hate every second of it

[11:35 PM]its so interesting and i keep having to hold myself back from saying that its not a typical trait for dokja, or even a main protagonist to have bc hes literally stated multiple times that hes not the main character, hes a reader, a background character, Just Some Guy, hes not confined to whats typical of his genre at all bc he was never supposed to fill that role in the first place which makes his whole existence a paradox within the narrative since yknow, from our perspective he is the main protagonist while junghyeok is a side character

[11:39 PM]and i think thats where having one of his skills, being able to break the fourth wall within his own world, is such an integral part of his whole thing, i actually thought that he was breaking the fourth wall in our world, but no hes breaking the fourth wall in his world

I did my homework and i did my chores, time to tackle on the third book of this series, Son of Ogre

Chapter 1

On Tragedy vs. Bad Endings

So I have a lot of thoughts about this very subject, and too much for the replies on my post, so allow me to try to articulate what I mean, and what a lot of us mean when we say “it does not make sense for either Jon or Martin to turn evil in the end,” even in a show that has been advertised from day one as a tragedy.

First of all, no one thinks this is going to end happy. The few who do are usually unaware that this show is billed as a tragedy, and are quick to be corrected. I didn’t know it was a tragedy until I was on season 3 and someone told me. It’s overall just best to assume that the OP knows it’s not going to be a happy ending, because “reminding” people or “explaining” to people that the ending is going to be sad is a fast way from people to get annoyed and defensive.

Anyway! It appears, above all, that people have either fundamentally different ideas of what a tragedy is or accomplishes, or that people have a fundamentally flawed understanding of tragedy and it’s place as a narrative device/theme.

My thoughts are that tragedies hurt, and tragedies can be devastating, but they have to have a message and they should not be cruel to the audience.

A cruel ending would involve leading the audience to believe one thing for the entire book, show, movie, podcast, what have you, just to rip it away at the last minute like a big “fuck you” to the audience. Those sorts of endings are inherently mocking of the audience, and ultimately disrespectful. The only people in the audience that “benefit” from this sort of writing are the cynics who spent the entire show talking down to everyone for seeing the silver lining in the impending tragedy, even if, up until the finale, the silver lining was always part of the narrative. Like it took actual twisting and outright ignoring of the narrative as it’s written to be cynical and sceptical all the way until the end.

That is, plain and simple, bad writing. Jonny Sims is not a bad writer.

Now tragedies often have “happy endings,” they just also have an element of sadness colouring that ending. A good, tragic ending should, in my opinion, feel bittersweet. We should see it coming, we should know it will hurt, but it should be for the greater good and should further the narrative that has been told from the beginning.

I said a few weeks ago that a tragic ending without a silver lining is just torture porn, and I stand by it.

Now, if Jon or Martin are revealed to be Actually Evil in the end, where is the silver lining in that? What narrative has even possibly hinted at this outcome, without putting on cynic glasses?

Every single plot point and plot “twist” in TMA has been clearly detailed, never relegated to pure subtext that you would have to comb through a single interraction and analyzing the tone in which it was said (which could easily be actor shortcomings or error). They have always been obvious, at least in hindsight. This is why, for a while, I subscribed to the Web!Martin theory, but due to recent episodes I’m more inclined to believe those “obvious things” were red herrings.

Throughout The Magnus Archives, the common theme in every. Single. Season finale is that “we are stronger together.” What do I mean by that? Well, here’s the general idea:

Season 1: The one time someone gets separated by the group for any significant length of time, like I mean the main group, she gets killed by the NotThem and replaced.

Season 2: Jon is alone, due to his intense paranoia and his reluctance to reach out for help. This leads to a disastrous series of events that leaves him a suspect of murder, and his friends even more doubtful of his character.

Season 3: In the episode just before they deal with the Unknowing, Jon literally says that isolation was his downfall, and he was going to work on trusting his friends more. When they got separated during the Unknowing, things went to shit. When they found each other again, they were able to rally and they “succeeded.” Conversely, they are also teamed up with Melanie and Martin who hung back to bring down Elias. They were successful, working as teams on separate objectives, etc.

Season 4: This is, by far, their most “successful” feats while simultaneously their least. The whole season was again showing the downfalls of isolation. In the season finale, Jon has Basira and Daisy’s help, and while bolstering himself with their strength, and the strength in his conviction to save Martin to be with Martin, Jon was successful in stopping Peter Lukas and saving Martin. Conversely, Martin and Jon’s isolation in Scotland could be, theoretically, implicated in how Jonah Magnus was able to succeed in the end like that.

Now evidence of this same train of thought in season 5? Jon literally says it: Gertrude would not have done well in this post-apocalyptic world, because she had no friendships, no anchors, no reason to stay human. And then Jon says “you are my reason” to Martin.

It is in the text of the story that the only way to succeed, or win, or survive, is through trust, friendship, and love. One of the main factors in so many of the statements, on why the statement givers succumbed to the fear in their story, for even a moment, had to do with very little personal ties to anyone else. Many of the statements feature isolation and, as Jon put it, “lack of corroboration.” On the flipside, many of the statements that ended with the statement giver escaping successfully, and surviving long enough to be reached out to for follow-up questions, involved them having close personal ties to someone else that kept them safe, somehow. Like the girl from Italy; remembering her mom saved her from the Lonely. Or, more ridiculously, the guy and his dog that escaped the spiral because he was so distracted by his dog and had to be home for dinner. In MAG170, it was Martin’s love for Jon, and his trust in the love from Jon and his friends, that saved him from the Lonely again. Jon’s incredible amount of love, and respect, and trust in his friends is what’s kept him from becoming another Jared Hopworth or Jude Perry. In MAG155, Cost of Living, he expresses open disgust in how that particular avatar of The End justified her actions, killing and killing and killing again because she viewed herself as more worthy of life than that person. In that same episode, he talks of not blinding himself because he hopes to use his powers to protect his friends, that without them they’re too vulnerable. Honestly, this is the same reason Peter Lukas is unsuccessful, because Martin only helped him at all to protect his friends. The fact that he didn’t see his failure coming was hilarious.

Gerry said in Family Business that there is no “entities of love”, and that might be true, but love and trust is literally what saves you from fear. How many of us deal with things that are scary in our lives, if only because we have some level of trust in the people or things around us. How many of us have been brought out of a panic attack by someone we love and trust?

So all of this has been presented to us, over and over and over again, which is what I, and others, mean when we say “it does not make sense for one of them to be evil.” That’s what we mean when we say “it would be Bad Writing to make one of them evil in the end.” The entire show has driven home the message that we need love, we need personal connections to survive fear. To rip that away from the main characters at the last minute and call it “tragedy” would be a spit in the face of every single listener who took the story at face value, without picking it apart and reading lines out of context. And Jonny Sims and Alex J. Newall have both said they hate lazy writing.

Now, none of the JonMartin fans I follow are deluding themselves to think this show will have a happy ending outside of very self-indulgent fix-it au fanfics.

The way I see this going down is that Jon and Martin will figure out how to put the world back to the way it was, but Jon will not be able to be part of the new world with Martin. That’s the tragedy; that the world gets saved, and Jon helps save it, but he doesn’t get to benefit from his efforts in any way. The tragedy is Jon loves Martin so much, and they deserve their happy ending, but they don’t get it. But, they still saved the world so others can have their happy endings.

Idk about you, but between the “Jon turns evil in the end” and “Jon stays good and sacrifices himself to save the world” endings, only one of them has me in tears right now as I type this out, and it’s not the former.

I’m not against sad endings,I’m against bad endings that punish the audience for having even a bittersweet hope. I’m against sad endings that are just sad for the sake of being sad, with zero pay-off or reason to happen, especially when those endings throw out 5 years of hard work.

And hey, I might just be forced to eat my words in the end, but not before I fly all the way to England and make Jonny Sims eat a knuckle sandwich.

This was a lot longer than I meant for it to be, but I just have a lot of feelings.

J: Right, so Haruna Fuuka has filed a lawsuit againts those who engage in 'internet slander'.

A tweet stated 'Both her parents created a failure'.

On Jan 14th, 18 year old Haruna and her mother filed a lawsuit at Yokohama district court demanding ￥2,654,000 in damages from a person engaged in spreading falsehoods which have damaged her dignity.

On the acknowledgement that these tweets went beyond what was deemed acceptable by society at large, on Nov 1st the internet provider was ordered to make public the persons name and address etc.

Haruna has been tweeting since the age of 9, giving her opinion at random about society's problems, and creating a stir. She now has over 200,000 followers and is fighting 10 years of slander. Kaoru, what do you think about this?

K: Well..I mean, naturally, you'd feel like that..

J: Hmm, but I don't know the details but..the name of the defendant has been withheld...well, its a common problem that as a person speaking in the public eye, you are going to get criticism along with praise...like a 'fame tax'. That said, how far do you go before honour is damaged? On SNS, you are of course free to express yourself, you can write what you want, but the issue is what constitutes damage to honour. This might be a very difficult area in which to draw a legal line, but on the other hand, if you don't draw a legal line, things may escalate out of control...Kaoru, what do you think?

K: Well for example, if banter between friends is written down...controlling that...Its best not to look at whats written in the first place.

J: I think this is universal, but at the moment I think Japan is bit like a geyser, people will rush towards any incident and some will start complaining, I mean, I think its important to say what you feel, but its complaining without trying to solve anything, only satisfying yourself.

K: Thats it

J: Its sounds strange to say, but it ends like masturbation. If it turns into something towards a soloution its ok, but just creating thoughtless slander to satisfy yourself is questionable.

K: So its often said, if you continue the conversation only looking at the bad things, it can't be helped. There are also good people out there..you know, put more importance on those people. How to put it...its like we said before, if you focus too much on that one out of a hundred, its kind of rude to the other 99.

J: I see. Still this person has over 200,000 followers and its said she has been fighting slander for ten years.

T: She's always been a bit of a talking point online. I'll just search for her.

J: I also have Instagram, I do stuff to do with societal problems on The Dave Fromm show's youtube channel, and whenever I upload about it (on IG), my followers decrease! *everyone laughs* Outrageously decrease! Im serious, despite getting so far, that channel updates every week, and with every update my followers decrease. Maybe people hate reading about societal problems..*to Tasai* What did you find?

T: So for example there was that thing recently about regulating gamers to 60mins per session, she had quite a few things to say about that, playing vs learning etc.

J: I see..Young people do complain, well you can't really tell here, but on the other hand, young people these days, i know they would hate us old guys talking about this, but young people apparently have three main taboos. The first is talking about sex, they dont follow this, the second is politics, they don't follow this either, and the other one is, they don't like being made to talk about the kind of things that they really need to be talking about...there seems to be this kind of trend. So i think in this way...theres a chance Haruna is getting right to the point of this. But certainly, applying the law in a way that recognises infringement/damage to honour by way of personal utterances has the potential to lead to restrictions on the freedom of expression. Its a difficult play off, isnt it?

T: Yes, it really is

J: Obviously, when it comes to race, or racial discrimination, there has come to be rules concerning hate speech and so on, but how far can you regulate one-to-one slandering, or..how far can you protect the person being attacked? Should the country or the judiciary decide this? Its difficult.

K: Kami, what do you think? Are you there?

Kami: Well, I hear slanders towards me all the time *everyone laughs* Like, god tells lies, god is useless, or even that there is no such thing as god!

J: Ahh, i see. They deny you!

Kami: Yes, thats it. If I care about those things, I lose!

J: Do you search for yourself online?

Kami: I do. *everyone laughs* ..and whenever I do its only ever those things that come up.

J: Ah of course...Kami, you have an exceptionally good handle on social media dont you?

T: He's great

Kami: Ive got a good handle on it.

J: Do you use an iphone?

Kami: I have two.

J: God has two iphones! Thats brilliant.

Kami: Yep, I have two...im not allowed to use them while im working.

T: Does he have a contract? With his address and such?

J: I can't tell whether he's great, or whether he's not so great...

Kami: If i care, I lose...I prefer them to hate me, rather than to be indifferent to me.

K: Kami, what do you think about playing computer games for one hour?

Kami: If the kid is good at it, they should keep doing it.

T: I see, i see.

J: Ohh not sure about that. That seems a bit out.

Kami: No, i really think so. Skilled kids can carry on playing.

K: Should unskilled ones give up?

Kami: Yes, they shouldn't do it...When they play all day, and they just can't clear the level..that kind of kid.

K: Its a waste of time right?

Kami: Exactly, its a waste.

J: They should do something else?

Kami: Yes

K: You should quit if you have no talent for it?

Kami: Yes, yes, its talent.

J: Well, just getting off a nightshift must be tiring.

K: For us too, you know, we should try not to say 'stop it' too quickly...we have to keep it interesting.

Kami: It was interesting though, I was listening.

T: Oh thank you.

Kami: But don't tell lies about me.

T: If you thought it was interesting, you should write about it on your social media.

Kami: Yeh, everyone pretends on social media anyway, they won't know its me.

K: Well, that was the first episode of 'The Freedom of Expression' but, should I ask how it was..? *laughs*

J: But, being together again after a while was refreshing..

K,T: Yes, thats right

T: Im happy.

J: So am I.

Have you heard about PFA and MFA?

or the full name is ‘Psychological First Aid’ (PFA) and ‘Mental Health First Aid’ (MFA)

Can we relate it with Cloud Strife? As we all know, Cloud had mental illness and was struggling alone. Let’s take a quick look on this topic then and see if characters in FF7 ever give PFA/MFA to Cloud or to each other. This is going to be a looooong post although I tried to simplified it, so, yeah. Good luck reading this !

Disclaimer : I’m not a psychologist. I’m still a student and psych is not my major field. During my intern, other than we got exposed a lot about psychiatric disorders and ways to deal with them, we also got trained psychological first aid in emergency department. If it wasnt because of this quarantine, i would have finished my training in emergency field. There might be false interpretation here or there, forgive me for that and pls correct any mistake in this post

This will probably trigger LTD. Sorry, but I had to, Pls read this post with open mind. Keep in mind I like both Tifa and Aerith, i have no grudges agaisnt Barret, Vincent, Nanaki or Cid so I am not being bias with any of them. I forgot a lot of stuff in OG (I played it when I was really really small), so I will be using lots FF7R and AC references here (and a bit from OG, depends whatever I remember)

Good to go? Allow me to rant. Read it slowly and if u skip some of it, u’ll probably mislead my actual words, and u’ll be triggered af. Don’t come at me with madness if u dont read the whole post properly

What is PFA and MFA? Generally speaking, if Basic First Aid is about covering the wound to prevent further bleeding, then PFA (Psychological First Aid) and MFA (Mental Health First Aid) is like applying a bandage on ur mental to avoid u continue being distress.

Usually, PFA is often associated with disaster event or terrorism, where large number of people got affected. Meanwhile, MFA focus in one person who is developing mental health prob or already in mental crisis due to certain traumas, such as vehicle accident, house burned and etc

Pls note that, certain people NEED MFA while the others may NOT NEED it. It is important to respect their needs/wants. Some victims may refuse verbally but they ACTUALLY NEED it (CLOUD STRIFE) and maybe some victims look like they dont need it, but they want it, and its super fine to give it

PFA/MFA not only done by the professionals and it is not a professional counselling, although necessarily training is needed if u want to approach deeper in this field. PFA/MFA is also not a psychological ‘debriefing’ - in which MFA/PFA doesnt need to involve a detailed discussion of the trauma event with the victim, but instead, it is an alternative way to psychological debriefing that helps for long-term recovery. (unless if ure a pscyhiatrist, then u have to forget about MFA and ask detailed questions regarding the events to help the patient to recover)

MFA and PFA both almost the same, but I will mention more about MFA here.

MFA (Mental Health First Aid) is not just about comforting “Oh, are u alright. I’m sorry for what u’ve been through”, but it is also about assessing their needs and concerns, protecting them from harm, provide practical support and support them feeling able to help themselves and others.

The main key for these two term is RESPECT - respect victim’s dignity, respect both parties safety and respect victim’s rights to make decision. Even without the PFA, we should respect these three in whatever circumstance we are in.

A lot of us honestly were born with natural skill of MFA bcause of our own empathy, instinct or experiences and some got trained professionally. Some of them already had MFA due to high common senses they have.

Some of the Do’s and Dont’s when giving MFA include;

Do’s : 1. Be trustworthy | 2. Respect their decision | 3. Be aware of and set aside ur bias | 4. Make it clear to them u are available for help even they push u away | 5. Respect their privacy and personal space | 6. Do remain calm and soft when the person in distress | 7. Listen and don’t interrupt their talking | 8. Help in terms of basic needs | 9. Create connection the person with others | 10. Give hope to them | 11. Provide private place to talk about the event | 12. Respect their strenght | 13. Advice small necessary matters or give simple words of encouragement | 14. Acknowledge positive features of what victims have done

To simplify, there are 3 ways for MFA to begin, and I will only talk about one of them, the one that is the hardest to do, that is when u notice someone looks distressed and ure concern about them, and leading u to approach them first without them noticing ur concern. [Am I putting the right words here?]

In Cloud’s case, who do u think the first noticed Cloud behaved oddly and went to help him first ? - yeah Tifa. U probably would say “OFC she went to help him, she met him first at the train station. That guy looked sick af, who wouldnt ask if he was alright. If Aerith/Yuffie/Jessie met him first, they would do the same”. Okay guys, that was not my point.

Let’s focus one by one characters and see what Do’s and Dont’s MFA (Mental Health First Aid) they’ve done to Cloud and other charas. Keep in mind, none of them know what Cloud had gone through, but Cloud had showed some obvious sign he was unwell and only a few of them noticed that and took action for it.

The symbol [X] means the Dont’s in MFA and ( ✔) means the Do’s in MFA.

Biggs Jessie Wedge -

I know there’s a thing about man helping man’s psychology and Jessie being flirty with a guy.They [X] thought Cloud was like how they saw Cloud. and they considered it as normal. They didnt see Cloud under distress so they dont have the need to concern his mental status. The good thing about them was, the three of them (✔) respect Cloud’s strenght, giving Cloud the confident to be in action. But, Jessie [X] had zero respect on Cloud’s personal space

I wanna highlight about Biggs. Biggs had an attitude of overthinking stuff, but it wasnt so bad that would cause him harm, he just cared too much about his friends. So I believe Biggs was the type that would notice immediately when his friend being strange and would give MFA (Mental Health First Aid) with his own instinct even without the person asking it.

During the Sector 7 Plate attack, where Biggs was severely injured, when Cloud said he was not a fan of kids and Biggs said Cloud had so much in common (in common of what? Cloud with the kids or Cloud with him?), Cloud gave him ‘a sad look’ and Biggs reached out his hand to Cloud’s head. Biggs (✔) remain calm and soft when dealing with Cloud’s feeling (who faced traumatic event but Biggs didnt know about it) on that moment despite his current physical status. And also he (✔) wished goodluck to Cloud, leading to prevention distress on Cloud

Marle -

Marle [X] judged Cloud for someone who had no skills, but she entrusted Cloud to take care of Tifa’s well being. Not knowing who Cloud was, Marle noticed Cloud looked glum, she (✔) offered her ear for Cloud to rant and knew right away he was not having enough sleep, then (✔) advising him to sleep more . Lol, she was [X] biased with Cloud and Tifa. Not her fault, she only knew Tifa’s story, not Cloud’s. After the Sector 7 plate fall, we saw her being the most active member to help with the remaining citizens there. Marle without a doubt had given the citizens there PFA (Psychological First Aid) , by helping them with their (✔) basic needs, (✔) create connections, (✔) put away bias, (✔) remain calm and soft.

Barret Wallace -

Barret was the same like Biggs Jessie Wedge. I’m sure Barret thought Cloud was just fine. Barret saw Cloud as a mercenary with stinky attitude,[X] judging him like that causing Barret to gave him the same attitude too. But overall, he (✔) respected Cloud’s strength a lot

However, after the Sector 7 plate fall, Tifa and Barret were the one that hurt (mentally) the most, Tifa as usual locking her emotions, there we could see how Barret comforting Tifa by (✔) giving words of encouragement and proceed on (✔) hugging her to show his empathy. Barret also (✔) remain calm and soft spoken when talking to the survival victims of Sector 7 citizens. He also (✔) acknowledged what the citizens had done to survive

Vincent Valentine -

Don’t be surprise Vincent was listed here. This guy here was like another version of Cloud but more mature. In addiction, they both kinda share the same pain. So, I personally think Vincent understands Cloud pretty well. In AC, where Cloud was mentally ill, Vincent saved Cloud from Kadaj and brothers and (✔) took him to safer place. That was a common thing to do. But let’s go deeper, Cloud never told him about himself, but Vincent already (✔) aware of Cloud’s trouble with the geostigma stuff and Cloud’s current mental status. Vincent, (✔) calm and soft like always (✔) didnt hesitate to asked if all of these were just about ‘fighting’ and it made Cloud to ‘re-think’ further about his problem. He (✔) didnt pressure Cloud here, instead he was (✔) helping Cloud to understand the condition he was facing, and this lead Cloud to avoid distress.

Aerith Gainsborough -

I know Aerith was special. She was an important character and devs created her to be ‘loved’ by the fans so that her death would be tragic. Aerith did almost all the things that shouldnt be done when giving MFA to mentally ill person. Some of u may say “Duh, Aerith didnt know anything about Cloud thus she had no intentions of giving him MFA”. Yup, ure right. Aerith didnt know about Cloud’s mental status but so as all the other characters in the series.

Aerith was [X] being pushy with Cloud, in lots of ways, from making him as a bodyguard for free to forcing him to wear a dress. She [X] forced Cloud to accept her idea about meeting Andrea, dance and gown. She also [X] forced Cloud to help picking the flowers. Aerith [X] didn’t let Cloud to have his own decision [X] neither giving him a chance to talk, and [X] abandon his feelings (cough..uhm, Aerith resolution). She also had [X] no respect on Cloud’s personal space and [X] too much touching and leaning to him. Aerith also [X] put herself in danger and that worried Cloud. She [X] looked down on Cloud in someways too

However, at the Sector 5 slum, where the hooded man appeared, Aerith noticed Cloud was having trouble with himself, she (✔) encouraged Cloud to keep himself together. Also, throughout the entire game, Aerith always remind the team to (✔) have hope in everything. Her positive vibrant attitude was what (✔) made everyone able to believe in themselves. She also (✔) ensure Marlene’s safety and protected her. She was able to (✔) remain soft and calm when approaching Marlene. Remember Betty? Aerith took her time to helped her out and she even (✔) respected the little girl’s strength, (✔)slow and steady when saving her and (✔)soft spoken

Tifa Lockhart -

Tifa met Cloud at the train station, saw him being ‘not-so-fine’ state despite Cloud claiming he was completely okay. Tifa didn’t know what Cloud had gone through and she (✔) didn’t pressure him to talk about it. She even helped him to (✔) find a place to sleep even when Cloud never asked for it. Tifa unconsciously was the first person to give Cloud MFA without knowing what Cloud had faced previously. And Cloud, on that moment, he really needed a help. Tifa also (✔) stated that if Cloud need anything, she would help him with it

Tifa (✔) remain calm everytime Cloud had sudden headache, she didn’t leave him alone and (✔) didnt put any pressure on him by asking question. During the (✔) Alone At Last, they had privacy Tifa asked about what happened after he left Nibelheim. She (✔) listened and didnt interrupt him, (✔) neither pushing him to talk more. Moreover, Tifa (✔) put a distance with Cloud, dunno if she was the one who was being uncomfortable or she actually (✔) respect Cloud’s personal space and privacy. Tifa (✔) didn’t force him to stay at Midgar, she asked him and was glad Cloud would stay for a while. Tifa was no doubt (✔) respect all Cloud’s decisions too. Also, don’t forget, Tifa also helped Cloud to help (✔) make ‘close connection’ with the Avalanche members and people in Sector 7 slums. She also (✔) didn’t do much touching with Cloud (Well, I mean, she didnt touch him in clingy way)

In AC, Tifa (✔) encouraged Cloud to have hope for Geostigma and the family

Tifa did [X] put herself in danger by becoming Corneos bride participant and that gave Cloud trouble (but Tifa ensured him she would be fine on her own previously) And btw, in OG, I read about the fans questioning why Tifa [X] didnt tell Cloud the truth. I would like to argue this matter. TIFA IS A CHARACTER WITH REAL HUMAN FLAWS, she too had her own traumatic event and was not really sure of herself on what to do. However, considering what Tifa had done for him, Tifa had helped with Cloud’s psychology the most.

I know Cloud was putting up a font, and that made him to have condescending attitude, and people couldnt see what Cloud was hiding behind the the bravery face. However, all of us as fans acknowledged the pain Cloud was suffering in the entire FF7 story. Some of the characters like Tifa, Marle, Vincent, Biggs noticed it and they took actions for it, while others, I do personally thing, they were hurting the Real Cloud’s mentality more.

Long story short, Tifa was the one who gave mental health support the most to Cloud, followed by Vincent (AC), Biggs and Marle. Aerith did the worst with Real Cloud's mentality + she then died, mking Cloud be more miserable,

However, Aerith actually had the best way to give MFA/PFA to children, but maybe the worst to Cloud. While Tifa gave the best MFA to Cloud which helped him to get himself together through out the entire time

DCOM Rankings #66: Return to Halloweentown

Okay, so I’m gonna confess to you all. Ready?

This movie is the first Halloweentown movie I’ve ever seen. DONT KILL ME! I saw it when it premiered in 2006 and I think I really liked it because of Sara Paxton and the fact that she was also in Aquamarine (love that movieee). But also I just really enjoyed it back then.

Over the years I’ve only managed to watch the first one because everyone said it was so good. I finally watched the second and third ones for this current ranking. So now that I know the context behind everything....yikes....the movie actually makes me angry.

I know that this movie isn’t well liked because they replaced the main actress (apparently they replaced her without even telling the original actress, which is really shitty) but honestly I think she did decently as Marnie. Was there a personality change? Slight...the Kimberly j brown Marnie would have been much more aggressive than the Sara Paxton version. But other than that I don’t see too much of an issue. My issues with the movie go BEYOND this.

I’m actually going to say the good things first just cuz I feel like it.

- like I said, I really like Sara Paxton as an actress, and ugh she’s so beautiful...and I think she played Marnie pretty well, in my opinion, not 100% obviously but good enough

-the overall plot and pacing of the movie is soooooooo much better than the 3rd movie. Oh my god it’s like night and day! I was definitely more entertained from the 4th movie than the 3rd if anything. there was a lot going on a one single villain (or group I guess) to focus on.

-most importantly, we’re BACK in Halloweentown!! I missed it so much. AND we got to see Halloween town back in the colonial days as well, which was cool too. I really do like the asthetic of the university and it fits really well with the Halloweentown vibe. I mean it’s basically hogwarts but less cool.

Okay now the things that make me annoyed, angry, or any negative emotion. I’m about to go off on some things.

- Even though Sara Paxton did a pretty good job in my opinion, just the fact that they replaced the main actress is a ballsy move and a shitty one when you consider what actually happened. And I can see why fans would consider this film to be non-canon or alternate universe or just a tack on movie. Because this is the first HT movie that I’ve ever seen, it’s still nostalgic for me though and I think by itself it would be a better movie, because that’s how I originally viewed it.

- the pacing was decent, but the overall plot was kinda predictable. I mean, another group of people suddenly want to take over Halloweentown, there’s a Cromwell prophecy, and it just happens to be the 1000th celebration cuz why not? I will say I’m glad it wasn’t as confusing as the previous two, but at least have a reason why you want to control it that has nothing to do with Kalabar’s reasons.

-going off this, the villains were a little lame and boring. The sinister sisters were okay I guess, they were more annoying than anything else.

-Dillan was straight up useless because he was put under a spell the whole time. He just kind of tags along and agrees to study at witch university just to keep Marnie out of trouble. I feel like that would be out of character. Dillan prefers real world stuff over magic. Unless he secretly liked it all this time. I don’t know. Also they finally just written Sophie out of the movie entirely. Can’t say im surprised. But it still upsets me. Like you had the chance to create a close-knit magical family, but only parts of the family were able to make it at a time.

-the grandma was only there for one scene and that was it! I thought she was in the movie much more than that!! I’m so disappointed! Maybe Debbie had other obligations, I’m not sure. They kind of replaced her with another old woman actress, her “best friend” to be the grandmother figure. It was eh.

-the twist was dumb, I guess because I saw it a mile away. So now aggie was queen of Halloweentown and no one decided to mention the prophecy until now? Like no one mentioned there was a thing as Cromwell royalty? Idk, this 4th movie is starting to stretch things.

-lastly, the love interest. I’m gonna say first that they probably just brought Lucas Gabriel back on because “look, watch our movie, we have an HSM actor in it!” Now that that’s out of the way, WOW is this love connection forced!!! My god I hated them together! Now that I understand the context behind his character, he acted completely platonic to her in the previous movie, because his dad was the straight up villain!! But ugh all their scenes together were straight up awkward! No chemistry whatsoever and didn’t make any sense. I’m glad they didn’t kiss or anything, but they could have just been friends and I would have been more than fine, because their argument that starts the third act was actually pretty interesting. Either Luke or the second guy would have been fine! Even the third guy was somewhat okay. This just angers me that they just forced them together cuz why not. Nooooo!

Okay that’s everything I think. So overall I really liked this movie as a kid, but now that I’ve seen it again, I guess my memories of it weren’t as clear as I thought. And that makes me sad, because as a stand alone I feel like it would be a decent movie, but as part of a series, it just feels wrong. And now I’m sad. For a letter grade I think I’ll still give it a B but a low B. I don’t know if I want to rank this higher than the 3rd movie...maybe JUST below it.

The next movie is another classic that I don’t want to see be ruined by my modern eyes. But the show must go on. See you then!

10 favorite 1950′s movies/reccomendeitions

So I figured,a lot of people with the quarantine are bored and looking for new stuff to watch ,so I wanted to give my reccomendations for some classic films people could check out .....Thing is as I compiled the list I realized a majority of them are from the 50′s .so decided why not make it all the 50′s .This list is in no particular order

Night of the Hunter :This is my second favorite movie of all time .The story of two kids who know the location of some stolen money ,and thus are the targets of the murderous and greedy preacher Harry Powell.The thing is while the main kid John can see through Powell’s facade ,he is such a charming guy that all the adults ignore this.IT’s a scary movie but I hesitate to call it a horror movie ,it’s more like a fairy tale ,with Lilian Gish even playing a mother goose type figure and Powell certainly evokes the big bad wolf (He’s even compared to a wolf in the movie ).I will also say Robert Mitchum’s Harry Powell is one of the most terrifying villains I have ever seen

20′000 LEagues Under the Sea :If you dig steampunk you HAVE to watch this movie .A scientist(Paul Lukas),his assistant (Peter Lorre), and a harpooner (Kirk Douglas) are taken aboard a submarine by Captain Nemo(James Mason)....And from there you get some great adventure,a great cast,an itriguing anti villain,and an epic battle with a squid.This maybe my favorite Disney movie

Them!:This is a movie about giant ants that actually is terrifying .It treats the subject matter seriously ,the ants dont look bad ,the main cast are all excellent (Including James Whitmore from the Shawshank Redemption ) and theres are a lot of fun supporting characters(Including a tiny role for Spock himself ,Leonard Nimoy)

12 Angry Men:The life of a young man hangs in the balance,as a jury is convinced he murdered his father ,but one man (Henry Fonda) is convinced there might be some doubt .This movie is a battle of words ,all in one room and with characters whose names we dont even know ....And yet it is never dull,with great direction by Sidney Lumet and magnificent acting by not only Henry Fonda but Lee J Cobb ,EG Marshall,John Fiedler ,Jack Warden,Martin Balsam,and all the rest of the cast

The African Queen :Taking place at the start of WWI,a missionary(KPlayed by one of my favorite actresses Kathryn Hepburn) and a hard drinking riverboat captain (Played by one of my favorite actors Humphrey Bogart ) team up to sink a German ship .What we get is a romantic adventure film that is basically Han Solo and Leia the movie .

Gojira :A tale of nuclear destruction and the responsibility of people who create such weapons ,covered in the skin of a monster movie .This is a horror film in its truest sense

High Noon:I will admit while I love western films....Most of the westerns I love are from the 60′s onward,but this is one of the earlier westerns that I love .Simple story of a bad guy coming to town with vengence on his mind while our hero (GAry Cooper) tries to get any assistance ....And is constantly let down by his “friends”.A simple yet effective story `

Dial M for Murder:My third favorite Hitchcock film(Behind Psycho and Rope).Basically a man( Ray Milland) plans on getting someone to murder his wife(Played by Grace Kelly) and that is ALL I am saying about the plot ,cause the twist and turns are what makes this fun as well as Ray Milland as one of the most charming villains EVER

Jannis Brandt Interview (spring 2018)

N: Who is your brother?

J: My brother is Julian Brandt. He plays for Bayer Leverkusen and the national team.

N: How does it feel if you say something like that?

J: Hm, it’s big. Especially the national team, because we used to watch the games of the national team on TV in our childhood and youth.

I have also followed everything around him during his youth – all the youth teams. That was already big. But now that he plays for the national team makes it even bigger.

N: Did you - or Julian had posters of certain players in his room or so? Did he have role models or idols?

J: Hm, I think Julian’s room was full of posters. Ronaldo, Messi the real big players – even back then. But his idol – which I think is already known – was Diego, from Werder Bremen.

N: And your idol?

J: Mine? I never really had any idols. No football player.

N: But?

J: Not really others as well.

N: Singer? Actor? Comic figure?

J: No. Not really.

N: Sometimes people do have a certain indiviual. Even if it’s pikatchu.

J: (laughs) No, Julian was more of an anime fan – I would say. Whether it was Dragonball Z or whatever… I usually never watched those shows. He was more that type of person. Hm, idol? I dont know. Sure, the big names Ronaldo and Messi where you were looking up and say „Ok, those were the players of our time“. But no, not really an idol.

N: But since we are talking about the national team. Has there ever been a german national player who was admirable?

J: Back in the day or today?

N: Yes – but especially in the past. I mean you named the big international stars of football, but do you think there is at least one german name on that list or not?

J: There wasn’t. (laughts)

N: (laughts) OK, clear answer!

J: Well of course there were big names. Players like Schweinsteiger who now reached an age were they played many years for the national team. Including world cups. Yeah and if you see how these players are still playing now. Or Lukas Podolski who played one final game with Julian – his last one. This it’s big sure. Especially since Julian used to have posters with Podolski in his room and then suddently they play together. I thinks it’s big – even for him, playing with so many experierenced players and that sometimes he tries to look what tricks of them he can copy – yes.

N: When I looked at this from the outside, if somebody is very young and somebody who is older as player on the pitch. Sometimes it’s about body mass. Or your body develops over a certain while. Do you think there is a sense of inferiority as a young player?

J: Ahm, physically as a player I wouldn’t say that you are inferior. I think you do have some edges. I know Jonathan Tah. I think its pretty difficult to get past him – even though he is young. I think Julian is doing pretty good by now. He is not a player who looks for every one-on-one on the pitch. But I wouldn’t say he is inferior in those situations. Sure you have to watch your body as a young player and be carefully, in order to stay on the same level with the other guys - but no, not inferior.

N: How did you view Julians development through his youth? Football was on your brothers mind all the time. Was he like „Hey Jannis, lets go and shoot some goals. Do some passing.“ Was it like this?

J: It was really like this. It was still common throughout our childhood or youth– in a positiv way – to play outside from morning till sunset. We had a big public lawn in front of our house. And so there were like 40 something people on that lawn. Thats something that doesn’t exist anymore today – which is sad. So we used to play in front of our house until our mother was calling us.

N: Dinner!

J: Exactly – so everyone went back home. But no, we were out on the lawn many times. He played together with friends. I always wanted to join the older guys. That’s what often happend. (laughs)

N: Did you and Julian tried out other sports as well? Or was it always clear that football is the main thing.

J: I think Julian always stayed with football. I used to be a goalkeeper first – then I went for handball. Went back to football as a field player. I stayed there until U-17. I think I also did judo but that was just one course. No, Julian by contrast was much more focused on football and I was the one that tried out many different things.

N: Nice. That’s not bad right?

J: No. (laughs) The only thing I can add is: Julian just recently became interested in golfing. He seems to be motivated about golfing – but let’s see how long that will last. (smirks)

N: Especially in terms of time right? I mean he does have a very tight schedule? Training, games…

J: I wouldn‘t say that (laughs). I mean he does have practice - sometimes twice a day, but if you go golfing before or after training it could be a certain way of compensation for him. Or a certain peace you need. So I think its acutally good.

N: Thats nice! Did you join?

J: (laughs). I have only been with him on the golfing range once. I was just there observing and taking pictures. But I realized with him that golfing isn’t easy. Or at least thats what it looked like when he played (laughs).

N: It’s practice.

J: Yes it is. And I think he will continue to do that.

N: But do you think its just because you are a different persona than Julian? Didn’t you want to dive into the football world as well since you played many years yourself?

J: I would say about myself, I’m not fully talented in one area. Or there is no area where I want to focus completely. I’m a guy that likes to try out many things first. Whether its sports or something else. And I’m quite decent in many areas and so its different than with Julian. He is a talent in terms of football – but he drags his feet about other things in life. (laughs)

N: School too?

J: With him?

N: Yup.

J: He was really lazy! He claims he still could have gotten a high school diploma (Abitur). I thinks he only has a minor school diploma (after 10th grade). But I dont know if thats only big words from him or if he is serious about it.

N: But does it really play a role anymore? If you are so clear about what do you want to do. Is it really worthwhile to get an Abitur?

J: Thats difficult.

N: Did you get an Abitur?

J: I’m still working on my Abitur in media design. But I would say on one hand its important because you never know, how safe you really are being a football player. By that I mean, you have a sense of security with an Abitur. Only if you reach a certain point in your career it starts to become less important whether you have an Abitur or not. For me its just learning – Abitur. You really have to commit yourself doing it. You need to have a clear head, but other than that its not a world wonder getting it.

N: In what areas do you do your Abitur?

J: Design, media and art.

N: Do you have an idea, what you want to do with your life? Lets say over the next five years?

J: Hmmm, well… generally speaking: media. But thats a huge terrain. I had days were I was thinking about studying film after my Abitur. I was already looking around for schools. Photography is also something I like – but those are big areas and the best way for me would be to filter everything. But I dont know where I will end up persicely. I haven‘t made a decision yet. And thats fine.

N: Nice. So without any jugdements. Because there are also people who exactly know where they want to go.

J: No. No – I was never that type of person! I’m a guy who makes quick decisions and want to deliver quick. But I’m never that person who says „I am doing this now, this the next year and so on“. And I dont want to be stuck in a three-year apprenticeship program where I dont know if thats really something I want to do for the rest of my life.

N: Well, you often dont know whether its the perfect job for you.

J: Exactly. That why currently I’m trying out many things. Gather experience. I want to filter between things that dont match my interest and by that I will find out what matches mine. Thats my current situation.

N: Sounds good! In your relationship, Julian was your big brother. You have a younger brother. The big brother than left the house since he got special training. How was that moment for you, when he left the house? Did you suddently become the „big brother“. How did you feel?

J: I remember him being 15 years when he moved out. And everything went very quick. Suddently all his bags were packed and he went to Wolfsburg. And the beginning was especially difficult for our mother. But thats normal. But yeah, you could sense that something was missing - also in our daily lives. But I had a little brother and we spent alot of time together. (laughs) Generally speaking, our childhood was like this: usually Julian and Jascha bonded together more – whenever I was teasing Jascha, he needed support and he got it from Julian. But our bickering was nice – we never really argued alot.

N: Does your father maybe had an influence? Since he was a football coach as well. Because I read that people say „Well I dont want my dad to give me special treatment – or give you a disadvantage“. Was that weird or okay?

J: Well I never really got to know it any different. Dad was active in football since I was little – as a player for his hometown team. And he coached Julian and his best friends since they were little, I think it was good for him to have a certain person that he could relate to. But our father never gave him special disadvantages or better treatment. Whenever it was about football he was coach and not father – and once the game was over he was still our dad. So in my opinion they did everthing right in that regard. And it is strange that a father is coaching Julian since he was a little kid until he left for Wolfsburg.

N: What’s interesting to know: how did you feel when he was on the pitch in a big stadium for the first time? What kind of feeling was that?

J: That was – if I can remember correctly – in Hamburg. When he already was playing for Leverkusen. It was a special game for me since I never liked Hamburg, from my childhood on – as a guy from Bremen. I didn’t know before the game that he was supposed to be a subsitute player. At some point you see him warm up next to the pitch and you start to think „Ok, will he now be put into the game?“. Yeah but it is something special when you hear his name over the whole stadium for the first time. Now you heard it a hundred times and it became normal, but it was special the first time. And you suddently get a lot of text messages. But its normal.

N: Did you get goosebumps?

J: I rarely get goosebumps (laughs). For that matter I didnt have goosebumps. But yeah you are really into it and you dont think about other stuff in that moment.

N: And you had the parents sitting left and right to you.

J: Parents are sitting left and right to you – yes and they are nervous as well – the first game wasn’t against Hamburg, it was his first goal. I have to correct myself. (smirks)

N: Maybe you can recall his very first goal.

J: The first goal he scored when he was seventeen, which he did against Hamburg. I remember him having the ball and he was still far away from the goal. He shoots – and it wasn’t really his best shoot, but the goalkeeper seemed to have had a bad day and so he scored. Then everybody was happy because nobody expected this to happen.

N: Nice! And how did you live together as brothers? Did you have a playstation at home and played together?

J: Since we were little kids we had playstations – multiple ones everyone that was avaliable. Whether it was playstation, Wii – ok, we didnt have X-Box.

N: But did you play FIFA?

J: We did play FIFA – very often. He was always the guy that was better at video games than I was. And the one investing more time playing it.

N: (laughs) So he really put a lot of time into it.

J: (laughs) Yeah… and long hours. Me too. And even today we play together and yeah, thats what a boy does in his spare time.

N: Maybe its a weird question, but: can you choose him as a player?

J: Yes.

N: Then, do you choose him whenever you play or do like you tackle him?

J: (laughs) No, its not that extreme. I’m not playing that much FIFA but back in the day you took him, when he appeared on FIFA for the first time as a new player. Ok, he wasn’t the best and you would say „Ok, well leave it if you want to win.“ But now you can choose him more often playing FIFA if you want to win. Yeah, I didn’t tackle him in the game. I think he picked himself and played FIFA with himself once.

N: Weird isn’t it? I mean you played FIFA over all these years – every year there’s a new edition and then suddently your own brother is part of a video game.

J: Well yeah, but you don’t notice it as much as you think, since you already have to deal with other surroundings that come as a football player. And so it’s just a logical consequence. The one leads to the other.

N: Did you brawl over food as kids?

J: Brawl?

N: Yeah… Was there yealousy about food? Did you eat alot?

J: Hmm, I think he almost ate twice as much as I did. He was always good at eating. Even back in the day, between tourmaments he used to eat a Bratwurst instead of something else. That’s what he needed in order to play good. (smirks) Well we actually never really brawled about stuff back when we lived together in Bremen – well we did have arguments.

N: Well I didn’t mean brawl in a physical sense. I mean like…

J: ….Oh, I see… but we did that too (smirks).

N: (laughs)

J: But that‘s normal that you brawl as brothers. Or that you wrestle. Thats even fun a bit. Even now he sometimes does that with my little brother. To wrestle on the bed. Yeah… but it‘s all show (smirks).

N: Like at WWE, right.

J: Yeah exactly. We used to do the WWE entrances. Our little brother wanted to get a wrestling belt for his birthday a couple of days ago, so he can hang it in his room.

N: Sounds professional…

J: …well, we used to watch WWE on TV back in the day. Which was always in the evening – so we were sneaking down to the livingroom and watched it, even though we were supposed to be in bed…. that was when we were very young… (laughs) But yeah…

N: Music? Is there a song which has a special meaning or a special bond with your brother?

J: (laughs) Ahm, well there isn’t ONE special song. There is no singer or band. We listen to the same music. We listen to a lot actually, whether its German, Spanish, English, French sometimes Brazilian when it’s more quiet… and ehm - I mean Portugese (smirks).

N: (laughs) How come? Did your parents listen to a lot of music?

J: Hmm, no. With us its more like: if we listen to Spanish or French in the beginning we dont know what the lyrics are about…

N: Execpt if you know the language…

J: Yes, execpt you know the language or you’re reading the lyrics. But its the music itself – most of the time. Music that just lifts your mood. And we are pretty much the same in that regard. We have the same music taste.

N: Your brother was very young when he started and then with his first Bundesliga match suddently his career accelarates. And then there a moments were you stagnate. How was that for you when this happend to him? Or have you noticed how he felt? Was it difficult? Or normal – because he still belived in himself?

J: I think what he knows now, or maybe for a while now ist that, you get hyped if everything goes great and you get back to the ground if you play poorly. And he doesn’t have to like that – and I think he really doesn’t like that. Yeah but this hyping of players is something he absolutely doesn’t like. And he is just doing his thing. Yeah but if he has a low – he is not that person who…

N: …wallows…

J: Yeah, who remains low too.

N: But do you think it’s a special challenge? Because he isn’t really that old. I mean you are even younger than him – but anyway, when you live through something like that. There are thousands of people chanting your name – and then the pressure. You have to be good and show skill...

J: Sure. First, you have to find a way to deal with pressure…

N: Does he have something to cope with that? Does he do something in his free time? Meditate or something?

J: (smirks)

N: I mean it could be!

J: In the end, as stupid as it may sound: he just plays playstation to distract himself. In his free time football isn’t as much of a topic of discussion. It’s not like he talks with his friends alot about football. Maybe a bit, but as long as you catch him in his free time talking about something else other than football it’s positive for him. Just distraction. I mean he has to deal with football multiple times over the week or weekends. And he has to get his mind somewhere else in order to cope with pressure. But he has found a good way dealing with pressure…

N: That how he seems to look like. I mean I watched a couple of interviews and he looked very solid and unimpressed…

J: Yeah, he is kind of very open. And honest! And he tells you directly what he thinks if there is something he doesn’t like. He never pulls of a great show – or in front of somebody. So that makes it into style of football. He listens to his stomach. You have to put him on the pitch and say „Just go ahead!“. Maybe you need to tell him „here you have to do a bit of this and a bit of that“… then he knows „ok“ and he plays his style. And I think it’s what makes him a great player. Because he withstands pressure – always very relaxed. And thats why he can perform.

N: Name one trait of him that really annoyes the hell out of you?

J: (smiles)… well I have to think a bit.

N: Well thats good, if there’s nothing. Or is there something that you really appreciate about him? Something you really like?

J: What I like…?

N: Well, its good if there’s nothing annoying about him.

J: What I admire is his honesty. He never tells – well he is my brother, but – that he always says his honest opinion. And that he’s very easygoing. Thats always good.

N: Will you visit him in Russia?

J: Well, first of all he has to be there. I think thats gonna happen – or I hope he will be there. And…

N: But there was an announcement or not?

J: (pauses)…. No I mean when he makes it into the final squad. Thats going to be announced on May 15. Then they travel to Russia – and as far as I’m concerned finally three players then will fly back home. And…yeah. If he makes it and he – let’s say make it into the quarterfinals or semifinals. I guess, me and my family will eventually fly over to see him.

N: Do have a wish for him before he leaves?

J: A wish? I always wish that he doesn’t get injured! Thats the most important thing. Because you can get „out“ of the game very quickly if you get injured. Health is everything. And that he get some expericence. No matter how often he plays, if he playes, how long. And that he has fun in what he is doing – and that he doesn’t force himself on doing stuff.

N: Do you have a nickname for him?

J: For him?

N: Yes.

J: I either call him „Julian“ or „Juli“. Many call him „Jule“. And he gives me a death stare whenever I call him „Jule“. (laughs). Nobody in our family calls him „Jule“, but I think that name originated in Wolfsburg. And the guys in Leverkusen continued to call him like that and since then. So he is sometimes refered to as „Jule“.

N: Especially because of the fans?

J: Even now because of the fans – yeah „Jule“. I think it’s a weird name. (laughs).

N: Maybe other names?

J: A nickname he actually has is „Skipper“ from penguins of madagascar. Dad is „Kowalski“ the little brother is „Private“ and I am „Rico“.

N: (laughs)

J: We adapted the characteristics of the cartoon. I think Julian had the initial idea. Because I think „Skipper“ is more the leader and the cool guy.

N: So everyone got their roles then!?

J: Yeah, sometimes we text over WhatsApp like „Hey Skipper how is it going?“ or „Kowalski when do you get back home?“ … so yeah those are our nicknames we carry for quite sometime now.

N: Are you in regular contact with each other? Daily? Every second day?

J: Actually we never write each other over the whole day constantly via WhatsApp. We facetime sometimes. But we dont talk about special topics if we do facetime, just to hear from each other. Mostly whenever somebody of us doesn’t have anthiny to do and goes online. Other than that, I always go to his home games. Away games - depending where it is. And if it fits into my schedule. I see him and spend some time in his apartement in Cologne. Whether its because I have school summer break and over the week we do stuff before or after the practice sessions. Which is good for him, so he has something to do and to get outside, since he lives on his own. And I think it benefits him as well as myself.

N: Do you have a feeling that he misses things because of football? Because he has to set priorities? Or do you think he can live free?

J: No, absolutely not. I mean you do have priorities in a sense that you dont have enough leg room – like I have – to go out with friends over the weekend. Thats time he rarely has, when officials tell him „You can go out and have a good time“. But even if he does go out with friends, he has boundaries. Because he is a person who is in the public eye. So yeah, that is one of the differences between us both. I’m more relaxed in that regard and he has to give it a pass since his youth basically. But I think thats something – given his position, he likes to sacrifice.

N: Thats something he likes, isn’t it?

J: Yeah, I guess so. I dont think thats something he is mourning about.
