Legend’s Attempts At Retirement

So I got 1 response and it was for Legend. So here’s Legend!

Link could pinpoint the exact moment he was more wrong than he ever had been before.

It was when he got his wings

He’d been really happy when it had happened. He had heard the less than pleasant phrases about the last Hero, and he knew that Hero had wings too, but it was still exciting.

He could fly now! No one else in Hyrule could fly!

Well, Princess Zelda could fly, but that was beside the point.

His wings weren’t big, but they were fast. He couldn’t be hit in the sky, and could dart easily around midair even inside. He had perfect control of his form in the air.

He fell in love with flying.

He thought his worries were over.

He was wrong.

He thought saving the Oracle Din was the end.

He thought saving her sister Nayru was the end.

He really wanted it to end.

Washing up on Koholint was the best thing to happen to him. Marin was perfect.

They sat on the beach and she would preen his wings.

“I would love to fly like you do,” she would say to him.

“You want songbird wings?” He would joke back. He didn’t know how speech came so easily here. When he did, he would wish he didn’t.

“No,” she would hum. “I think I’d like to be a seagull,”

“A seagull,” he snorted.

“Hey! Don’t be mean!”

“I’m not mean,”

“You’re being mean!”

“I have never been mean in my life.”

“Liar!”

She’d shoved him. He’d laughed. He’d never wanted it to end.

He didn’t deserve his wings. Or maybe he did. The Hero before him certainly never saved anyone.

He sat on his raft, staring into the open sea, looking desperately for something that didn’t exist. For something he destroyed. For someone he killed.

He swore off adventuring and heroing when he got home. He barely even flew.

Then Ravio broke into his house.

Link was not pleased by this.

He was retired. Apparently Ravio didn’t understand what that meant.

Ravio really didn’t know what it meant, or he didn’t care. Either way, Link was now out of retirement.

Ravio pissed him off more than anyone else in the world, in either of their worlds. He also couldn’t live without the con-man anymore.

It infuriated him.

It gave him a reason to fight.

That infuriated him too.

Fury, he reasoned, was better than apathy.

And then Ravio turned out to be a Hero too!

Link had stood there after Zelda gave Hilda (whom he was sure it’d take him a while to forgive, even though he understood why she tried to have him killed) and Lorule back their triforce, and just watched. Watched as Hilda gained her wings, bug wings and not bird, and marveled at the translucent oil purple dragonfly wings. Watched as Ravio gained his wings, butterfly wings in so many different colours it would be pointless to name them. Watched, and waited.

And then Ravio turned to him, grinning wide and thrilled to show off to him.

Link punched him.

Ravio forgave him, and Link promised to teach him how to fly in repayment. The Princesses had been shocked and upset, but that was just how the two of them were.

In Link’s defense, that was the only time he’d ever punched Ravio, before or since. He just really needed to punch Ravio for all the bullshit he went through.

He tried taking a vacation after all of that, and he got swept up in another quest to save a princess. He got a set of penpals in Princess Styla and the other two Links out of it, but he made a decision at this point, and retired from retirement.

Clearly the gods did not want to let him rest. Zelda had better start paying him for his heroics.

Amusingly, the shocks and surprises he’d dealt with his whole life came secondary to when he and Zelda found out they were siblings.
