Probably the actually good version of this post would have been something about how the Marlowe and Goethe strands of the Faust legend bleed into one another in different ways depending on which one you encountered first. I feel like there's actually a scholarly article on this somewhere that focuses on the way critical and/or theatrical approaches to Marlowe's version have been shaped by Goethe's version but idr where I saw it.

You definitely see it from theater critics who weren't impressed with Arthur Darvill's Mephistopheles though.
