It’s not that it’s difficult writing character analysis for Yohan bc I keep seeing ppl complain that we’re not doing enough of it objectively.
But consider this: Yohan isn’t just a layered character. He spells himself out to a T and doesn’t try to hide who he is. It’s not that we can’t analyze him, but he’s so clear-cut with his intentions that you’re given everything you need to understand him so concisely without really needing to dissect him further. Is it fun to do that? Yes, but considering this—
As @highflyerwings has pointed out so many times, Yohan is the one consistent characters who has been truthful - has he omitted truths and let people come to their own conclusions? Yes, he has, but that’s different than point-blank lying. He’s never hidden his intentions; I mean hell, he literally told Gaon’s professor in episode 12 exactly who he was and what he was doing when confronted:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
See, the thing about Yohan is that he knows how to manipulate words. When the professor was accusing him of corrupting Gaon, he did not admit to it, but omitted it by transferring partial blame on the professor, telling him that he was the reason Gaon got involved in the first place - if he hadn’t told Gaon to spy (as if that’s even honest in and of itself, lol) on Yohan, the associate judge never would’ve found himself in the situation he was in (and an assumed situation because Soohyun didn’t bother asking what actually happened and relayed that back to the professor).
I’m sure there are other poignant moments I’m missing that I could include throughout the show - such as the priest Gaon spoke with assuming kid!Yohan was weird when it turns out Gaon posed the question about Yohan just being lonely and wanting to play with the other kids - but my point here is that yes, we can break down a character analysis for Yohan, but what’s genius about his creation is that he is the most obvious, most exposed character out of everyone. His intentions from the start are clear, and the only thing that is still uncertain is exactly what happened with Isaac and the fire - but even then just from the flashbacks we’ve seen that there’s been omitted parts, which is consistent with his characterization. Was his story an actual lie? Or did he just manipulate his words again? We’ve yet to find out.
But this is also one of the points of his character. Yohan makes no mistake about who he is and what he is. In fact, he goes so far to call himself a monster because he knows what he does and yet chooses to do it anyway. His tactics may not necessarily be Sunah level; it seems he still lives by some amount of personal moral code (even if it is a logical, strategic understanding that x, y and z will get him a negative response, so he doesn’t do it), but he is no stranger to introspection and self-justification based on how he grew up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And that’s also one of the points of his character because people only see what’s in front of them and what they want to see - Yohan may not be straightforward with saying his exact intentions in a factual, direct sentence, but everything about him from his words, thought process and actions all paint a very clear picture that doesn’t need spelling out.
Soohyun and the professor and two examples of characters that only see what’s in front of them. They use their confirmation bias (”the seeking or interpreting of evidence in ways that are partial to existing beliefs, expectations, or a hypothesis in hand”) to ressasure themselves Yohan’s a monster.
An example of that is the professor blaming Yohan for putting him in the hospital and Gaon defending Yohan by telling him it couldn’t be possible. Instead of listening to Gaon, the professor had his mind made up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Instead of asking Gaon what happened with the minister, the professor assumed Yohan had corrupted him and got him into this mess, to which Yohan asks the professor:
Tumblr media
And it’s because they see what’s in front of them and they only see what they want to see. To some extent, Gaon was the same until Yohan showed him how detrimental assuming can be, that you must actually look and pay attention to more than what’s in front of you because you’ll miss the bigger picture if you don’t.
Yohan is significantly more transparent than anyone else on the show has been. They’ve just chosen not to see him for who he really is - which is well intentioned, even if a little misguided.
The irony is not lost on me when I see posts and/or comments about Yohan and our lack of awareness for who he is, how we’re uwu towards him and dismiss his actions and baby him. He’s already spelled it out for us; half the work’s already been done for us, and there’s no mistaking it. So, I don’t have to spend countless hours trying to figure him out. Instead, I can spend my time coddling him because I can, lmao.

Breakeven (Kirishima x Bakugo x Reader) Part 1(???)
Characters: Eijiro Kirishima, Katsuki Bakugou, gender neutral reader, mentions of reader’s parents
Contains: Polyam relationships, fighting, arguing, language, pure angst, mentions of break ups, mentions of someone doing stitches, mentions of a anxiety/anxiety attacks, mentions of minor violence, mentions of Bakugou’s hero name
Word Count: 3k+
Bakugou and Kirishima have been a thing since the days you all went to UA. You got with them your last year of school, but unlike the two of them being out, no one knew about your relationship with them. They wanted to keep it a secret, claiming that they wanted to protect you and didn’t want any of you to receive hate, since the concept of a poly relationship still did not sit well with anyone. You thought as you all got older and were adults that it would become less of a secret, but as your boyfriends both rose up in the hero charts, the secret was locked and sealed, never going to see the light of day.
The world knew of the pro heroes, known as your boyfriends as being together, and everyone was quite content and happy with it. It did not stop the public eye from loving them and cheering them on through the years as they became the great heroes they always dreamed about being back in high school. You missed those days, mostly for the simple fact that things were easier. You had no worries about jobs or worry about anyone you cared about getting hurt. You also could just spend the entire weekend in bed with your boyfriends, cuddling and talking about everything and anything. Now, you were lucky if you got to even see either of your boyfriends.
Although the three of you lived together, both of them were out often doing hero work and being the top heroes they were seen as. And when the two of them were home, you were out working a minimum of 12 hour shifts at the hospital being your own hero, helping those in need. You loved your job, it was one of the best things you’ve ever done. But you still missed your partners. You hated not being able to brag, that the two big heroes saving lives and making a difference were yours. You hated the comments your mother made about how you couldn’t find time for a relationship, and how desperately she wanted grandkids or even grandpets, just something. It hurt you and made you jealous even, to watch and see your both of them going on dates and being out in public together. Yet when the three of you were in public you were just tagged as the friend who is third wheeling.
Your shift at the hospital finished and you drove back home, ready to be alone and met with silence, but to your surprise one of your boyfriends was home. You entered and found Bakugou laying on the couch, flipping through tv channels, completely dressed in his hero gear. You went to the couch and leaned over, kissing him softly on the forehead.
“Hey babe, didn’t expect to see you home.” You spoke, as you went to take off your shoes and put them beside the front door and placed files and your keys on the table. You glanced and saw him sit up and turn back to look at you.
“Dumbass, I told you I was going in later this week for patrols.” He grumbled out, his words coming aggressive, but you knew that they weren’t meant to be. You just nodded, even though he hadn’t spoken more than 4 words to you in the past week. But you were too tired and could not handle an argument right now or in general.
You went to the shared bedroom the three of you shared and changed into one of Bakugou’s shirts and a pair of sweatpants that could easily be yours or Kirishima’s. You didn’t care and just slipped them one before walking down to the kitchen and heating up some water so you could make some tea.
“Do you have time for a cup of tea or are you going to go be the amazing hero you are soon?” A smile on your face as you asked the question, peaking out of the kitchen at your boyfriend. You could see a small blush on his cheeks, and it made you chuckle. He responded with a quick no as you saw him get on his boots and grab the rest of his hero gear. He came and quickly kissed you goodbye and left, leaving you all alone.
You hate being alone even though you are the majority of the time. There was always silence in the house now, when before there were laughs and voices talking all through the night. The bed that once held three people, only held you, making the space seem bigger than it really is. You sat in the bed, sipping the hot tea and just looking around the bedroom. Even though it was your bedroom, it felt more like it was theirs. The walls were covered with photos and achievements from their herowork and even some of their very own merch. You had your nursing degree hung up on the wall in the bedroom at one point, but now you saw the frame on the ground, broken. Broken just like your relationship with the heroes, you never dreamed it would come to this, but you should have known it would be a matter of time.
Maybe everyone was right. You were just a third wheel in your own relationship, interrupting and taking up space and time away from both Katsuki and Eijiro from spending time together. Perhaps that was why they were gone so often, not because they had work, but because they wanted time away from you. You started to have trouble breathing and couldn’t seem to focus on anything other than the thoughts that ran through your mind. You were overthinking to the point you were having a panic attack. You tried to calm yourself in anyway possible, but nothing worked. Tears ran down your face as your mental state only worsened. With a shaky hand you sat the cup filled with tea, on the bedside table, before laying down in the bed, a sob escaping. You just laid in the bed and sobbed for what felt like hours before sleep consumed you.
Days had passed and you only saw Kirishima once in that time span, and it was when he brought in some civilians into the hospital. He didn’t say anything to you, didn’t even smile for that matter, only nodded his head at you before rushing back out into the streets. In that time you never once saw Bakugou. Not out in public or at your shared place, at least you didn’t see him in person. You saw him and Kiri plenty of times on the television for the excellent jobs they did on saving folks and stopping villains, as well as the paparazzi snapping pictures of the two of them on dates. What would kill you was something that would come in the coming months. Actually it would be around your anniversary with them, they both were out and you were left alone on your day off. You cleaned and planned to cook a dinner for you all, even if they both had to reheat it later. You had the news playing in the background, wanting to make sure your boyfriends were okay and nothing was happening to them. That’s when you heard it, the news that broke your heart in two. You had peeked at the tv, seeing pictures the paparazzi took of both your boyfriends out, on what looked like a date. It was the picture that followed. Bakugou was down on one knee and proposed to Kirishima. You dropped the cup of tea that was in your hand as it shattered on the ground, though at that moment you could care less.
You were happy for both of them but in this moment, you were hurting. You wish they talked to you about this or at least knew this was going to happen. You had hardly seen them in months and you were hurt and just tired of the neglect and the deep feeling that you were just a third wheel. The love they felt for you, in your mind, was long gone, for it they cared won’t they be here right now? Would they at least be home more often and spend time with you? You stopped cooking and left everything on the counter, you needed to get out and leave. The thought of being here and just holding them back pained you more than anything. You ran to the bedroom and packed up all the things you knew were yours, you didn’t want to carry or hold on to their stuff, it would only hurt you even more. You loaded up your car and locked the door to the place before walking out, leaving the key on the table with a note, a single goodbye. And off you went to go find a place to call your own.
You moved in with your parents for the time being, as you looked for a place. They didn’t ask too many questions, at least your father didn’t, though your mother kept trying to pry and figure out what was going on and had happened. You kept pushing her away, saying you didn’t want to talk about it. You considered even being transferred to another hospital, but you decided against it. You secretly hoped and prayed you would get a call or a text from either of them, but you never heard from them. It was almost as if you were doing them a favor when you walked out that day.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It was another normal shift at the hospital, and you were treating a patient when the doors swung open, you kept stitching up the person as you told the person at the door to wait.
“Y/N I don’t have time to fucking wait, we need to talk. Now.” An angry voice called out, and you didn’t need to turn around to know who it was. You took in a deep breath, trying to fight back the tears that were wanting to spill out.
“My apologizes Dynamight, but I am with a patient right now. If you’ll just give me a few more moments, I’ll be happy to discuss the issue you have.” You put on your customer service voice and face, pausing for a split second to turn and smile at your ex boyfriend. You heard him grumble as he walked out, slamming the door shut behind him. You apologized to the patient, but they were too awestruck to care.
You walked out of the room when a hand grabbed you and pulled you away to an empty room. You went to protest, trying to explain that he shouldn’t be here, in the hospital or in this room. But you didn’t stand a chance, because as soon as you opened your mouth, he had already begun shouting.
“Where the fuck have you been Y/N? Eijiro and I came home to find you and your stuff gone. We thought a villain had got you at first but soon realized you just left once we found the note. Are you really that much of a coward you had to break up and leave us via a note?” He shouted, his face red as could be. You hated yelling and being yelled at, but at this moment, you knew you had to stand your ground.
“How else was I supposed to Bakugou? You and Kirishima are never home, I hardly ever see or hear from the two of you and when I do you hardly even notice I exist! I was a third wheel in my own fucking relationship!” You yelled back, tears rolling down your face. Though you weren’t sure if they were because you were hurting or you were just that angry.
“We are pro heroes dumbass, we are gone a lot, having to save people. We can’t be there to baby you all the time. It isn’t just all about you, ya know. And god sorry we can’t give you the little happy fairytale love story you want, we can’t give you kisses in public or hug you cause…”
You interrupted him, responded in almost a mocking tone. “Yeah cause the world doesn’t understand and it would put me in danger. Blah blah blah. I don’t care anymore, let me die or get kidnapped by some pathetic villains, if it means I get to actually see and get love from my own boyfriends.”
You took a deep breath and went to look at him, when you felt a sharp pain in your cheek. He had slapped you. You grabbed your face, and started to cry even more so. You turned towards the door, ignoring his pleas and apologizes. Right as you stepped out of the door, you turned around briefly and whispered out, “Congratulations on the engagement by the way Dynamight, wish you all the best on a happy marriage.”
After the argument, you went to your supervisor and told them a family emergency had come up and you needed to go right away, of course, they believed you and let you go home. You cried the entire car ride home, and busted through the doors to your parents sobbing. Your mom was the only one home, and upon hearing you come home she came to greet you, only to find you a sobbing mess on the floor. She held you close and comforted you, for once not trying to force you to talk about it.
It took some time, but as you calmed down you began to explain everything to your mother, going as far back as the days at UA. You told her about your past relationship with the two pro heroes and how it all crumbled and fell apart. You explained why you left them and the hospital incident that happened only mere hours ago. She stayed silent and listened, letting you speak and cry, only rubbing your back softly when you started to get worked up again. You finally got through the entire story and looked at your mom, your eyes puffy from all the crying. Her only response was pulling you into a tight hug, holding you close.
“It may hurt now Y/N, but I promise you’ll find someone or several who love you and will appreciate you. Who will make time for you whether they are pro heroes or not. Heartbreak is never easy, but you can get through this, I’ll be here to help and support you until then.” She spoke out, giving you a smile before placing a small kiss on your forehead. You gave her a sad smile and hugged her again tightly. Sure you and your mom didn’t always get along, or agree on everything, but you knew at the end of the day she would always have your back.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A few more months had passed and you had moved out from your parents, getting an apartment of your own nearby. The past months had been rough but you had made it through, with the help of a therapist. She recommended you get an emotional support animal to help you feel less alone and help with the anxiety you suffered from. So that’s what you did, you got a cat, whom you named Ghost. Finally things were coming together for you, work was going well, you were healing from the mental pain, and you had a place of your own.
You had just finished moving in, and were just putting things where they belonged, when you heard a faint knock on the door. You assumed it was your mother as she had been pestering you about helping you get settled, so you hollered that the door was unlocked, before you heard it open and close quietly. You finished putting a few things away in the kitchen before walking out to the living room hoping to see your mom, but instead greeted by the pro hero Red Riot, also known as your ex Eijiro Kirishima.
“What...what are you doing here? How did you even find me? Only my mom knows I live here and she would never dare to give it to you,” You spat out at him, trying to hide your shaky hands. He stepped towards you and tries to pull you into a hug. Part of you wanted to hug him, dying to have this moment for oh so long. But the rest of you shoves him away and stares at him, anger filling your eyes.
“You can’t show up after not talking to me or even acknowledging that I exist for months on end and then expect me to be all happy to see you. Hell, you still haven’t even told me how you found my fucking my apartment!!” You yelled, fighting back the tears that so desperately wanted to spill out.
“Y/N...listen to me, first of all I’m a pro hero it isn't too hard to find your address, I am a pro hero, but your mom may have given it to me, after I did some explaining of course. Please, just let me explain and talk to you, after that you can kick me out and never speak to me again for all I care.” Kirishima said, looking at you, waiting for some confirmation that you would hear him out. You simply nodded and gestured for him to sit down on the couch. You sat down on the other end of the couch, staring at him, waiting for him to start.
“We didn’t mean to leave you out, at first we did get busy and behind on hero work. Then we all just got busy and you seemed distant and well, Bakugou didn’t handle it well, and thought it would be best to do the same to you. I didn’t want to, but it just slowly happened. And soon enough we all had just distanced ourselves from each other, er well you seemed to have pushed us away while Bakugou and I pushed you away. We got consumed in ourselves as well as our hero work. And then everything else happened so fast and before we knew it, you were gone. At first we both thought we were going to be fine, and we went about our daily lives, but then it hit me. You were gone, and I knew it was my fault, well both of ours, Bakugou and I, anyway.” He paused and looked at you, and you looked away, not wanting to make eye contact with him.
“Y/N, it’s not the same without you. I love Bakugou so much but god I love you so much too. It isn’t the same without you, it’s almost as if something or someone for that matter, is missing. And as tough as Bakugou tries to be, it’s clear he misses you too. You help hold us together, you are the glue in the relationship and without you we are falling apart. I don’t expect you to come running back and forgive us for the pain we put you through, but at least give us another chance, whether that means taking things slow or just at least talking to us again, anything?” He finished up what he was saying, and you felt his eyes burning a hole into your head with the intense stare. You glanced up and saw tears running down his face, and it pained you. A part of you so desperately wanted to hug him and just forgive him and Bakugou. But you couldn’t give in and go back that easily.
“I’m sorry, I just need time. I loved you both, more than life itself, but if we were to get back together, I don’t wanna be the partner who is hidden, I don’t want to be the third wheel in my own relationship again, I can’t do that. I wanna go on dates with you and Bakugou. I wanna be able to hug you and kiss you when you come by the hospital. I want to feel like I’m in a relationship and feel involved! I want to feel loved again, like I felt when we attended UA.” You could no longer hold back the tears as the dam opened. “God Eijiro, I loved you so much. I wanted a future with you and Katsuki but we all fucked up, the relationship we had back in our UA days was nothing more than some high school romance. I just got in the way and became the third wheel in your relationship with Katsuki.”
Kiri stared at you, almost as if he was at a loss for words, which you imagined he was. This was the first time you really opened up about all this. You knew you should have opened up about this sooner but how were you supposed to when both of them were gone constantly. You took the chance, as silence filled the room to wipe the tears off your face and do what needed to be done.
“In due time, maybe we all can be friends, but I need time to heal and fix myself. And right now, that means I need you to leave Eijiro.” You stood up and watched him quietly do the same and leave. As soon as the door shut the dam broke all over again. Your heart shattered a second time because of the two pros, but it wouldn’t be healthy to just jump back in head first, without taking time to test the waters and relearn not only who they are but also relearn about yourself. You loved them both and a part of you yearned to be with them again, but for now, this was for the best.

Hey so I really don’t know how to request stuff, but like I love your posts and I love Freddie so here we go
Freddie and the weasleys go visit the muggle world but the States and meet this amazing girl (aka y/n) while at a carnival. He falls head over heels the moment he sees her and they talk for a while, he believes she’s a muggle, however when they go back to hogwarts, she ends up being the new transfer student :o
But it’s okay if you don’t do it! It’s just a little idea maybe you can take some inspo off it ❤️
America was a lot bigger than Charlie told the Weasleys... And Harry. It was massive as they stood on the side walk. "airplanes. How fascinating!" Arthur said making all of the kids groan in response. "We. Know." Ginny sighed. "You talked about it for three hours on the plane!" Ron whined.
"Mum! Dad!" Someone said from across the street. He ran over and waved. "You guys made it!" Charlie said. "Yes and we're quite tired, where are we staying?" Molly asked. "Oh, it's two blocks from here, come on." Charlie said. The group walked, looking around at the scenery. "A carnival is in town tomorrow, you guys are totally going." Charlie said. Fred rose a brow. "Carnival? Like something from the movies?" He asked. "What expecting a summer romance?" Charlie asked jokingly. "No I--" Fred then noticed the long haired girl walking down the steps of the subway, face looking focused as you walked. "No." He cleared his throat. "Ohh he saw something pretty." Ginny teased. "Shut it." He said, roughing up her hair.
Fred didn't think much about the carnival idea. In fact this trip over all wasn't very exciting to him. Ron and Harry shared a room, Fred and George shared one and Ginny was the lucky one on her own. Fred looked out the window and Charlie walked in. "You guys ready to goooo?" He asked. "Yeah. Tell me this won't be dull." Fred said. "It won't be dull." Charlie assured.
So there Fred stood, screams of citizens going on as they rode rides, attractions that muggles of course found interesting with their naive minds and then... You. Fred didn't think much of this but you sat at a picnic table talking to someone. Your hair was in a ponytail, pulled back by a black ribbon and you wore a red cardigan despite the warm weather. Your smile was something he was captivated by, his lips parting as he saw it. Charlie rose a brow, following his brother's gaze before you looked over. "Charlie!" You said running over. Fred blinked.
"Y/n! Hi!" Charlie greeted. You gave him a small hug and you chuckled. "Glad to see you came, Sam's over there if you wanna talk to her." You said with finger guns. He chuckled and shook his head. "This is my brother Fred. Keep his sane will you?" Charlie asked. "I got it! Go go!" You shoved him to the table and ran back over. "What was that about?" Fred asked. "Charlie has a thing for my friend. This was a set up." You chuckled. You turned to Fred. "So you're Fred. Where's George?" You asked, cocking your head to the side like a confused dog. "...You know about George?" Fred asked. "Yeah, Charlie talks to me all the time." You nodded. "George is with Ginny." Fred said slowly, looking at you. "What's wrong?" You asked. "I... How do you know Charlie?" He asked. "My dad owns a coffee shop that I work at during the summer and Charlie is a regular." You said. Oh... So you were... A muggle.
Fred nodded and you rose a brow. "So, you wanna do something?" You asked curiously, bouncing back and forth on the balls of your heels. "uhh... Sure.. I don't know anything here though." He admitted. "Well in two hours there's going to be a banana derby." You said. Fred blinked. "A what?" He asked. "Spider monkeys riding on the back of dogs like it's a derby." You said. He blinked and gaped slightly. "What the hell are you Americans on?" Fred asked. "Freedom.... Too much freedom. But freedom." You answered. Fred snorted and you both started laughing.
"Well what's there to do now?" Fred finally asked. "Well there's rides but they're way too fucking loud and have a tendency to break down." You said. "No." Fred shuddered at the thought. Course he could easily fix something. "There's food that will cause you to probably die by thirty." You said. Fred rose a brow before seeing a kid walk by with a deep fried oreo. "I am understanding this 'too much freedom' comment you made." Fred said with a shudder. "There's games that are totally rigged but still kind of fun." You said. "That sounds kind of appealing compared to rotting your insides and potentially having a hospital trip." Fred said. "Rigged games it is!" You chuckled.
Fred followed you around, watching you laugh at many failed attempts with a baseball and hitting targets. "God your bad at this." You laughed. "Okay, you try it then!" Fred laughed. You picked up a baseball and hit the target making Fred raise a brow. "America's favorite pastime." You said, throwing the next ball up, it falling back into your hand and you hitting the next target. "How are you doing that?" Fred asked. You chuckled and stood behind Fred. "straighten your legs a little." You instructed. "Now pull your arm back." You said, guiding his arm with your hands. God they were so soft and small. "Wow..." You muttered, feeling the muscle that Fred had. Quidditch was a God send in this moment. "Like something?" He asked with a chuckle. "Throw the ball idiot." You blushed, letting go. He hit the target. "Pick your prize." The attendant said in a monotone voice. "What do you want?" Fred asked. "....Uuuh.. that weird ass mole platypus looking thing." You said pointing to the unidentifiable stuffed animal. "It's also a backpack." The attendant muttered. "BRO THAT'S SO COOL" you gaped, pulling it onto your back. Fred snorted, seeing you hop around with the creature on your back. If Fred weren't at a muggle based carnival he would almost call the backpack a niffler.
Fred spent most of the evening with you, talking to you and discovering you actually were moving to Scotland soon. Charlie befriended you so you'd know at least one person out there. "Why are you moving?" He asked. "Mom got a new job out there. She's an archeologist." You said. "Ah." Fred nodded. "what about you, what do your parents do?" You asked. "Uhm." Fuck, how should he answer that? "Mum's a stay at home mother and my dad... Works a desk job." He said. Not technically a lie. "Hmm." You nodded. "What do you want to be exactly?" Fred asked. "Welll... That's a little hard to explain." You admitted. "I'm used to weird." Fred chuckled. You smiled slightly. "Uhm... I want to study--" "Y/N!!!!!" someone called making you sigh. "I'll be right back." You huffed.
The girl from earlier was talking to you, smiling and you rolled your eyes. You came back over and snorted. "What was that?" Fred asked. "Charlie asked Sam out. Officially." You laughed. "and she needed to tell you?" Fred asked. "Sam tells me everything. I'm really going to miss her when I move." You said with a sigh. Fred put his hand over yours and you looked up, Fred giving you a reassuring look. You smiled at him and he kissed your knuckles. "On the bright side... I can see you in Scotland." Fred said. You smiled at that comment and laughed. "I suppose that is true."
The evening carried on, you and Fred watching the insane event of a 'Banana derby' before spending time in a photo booth. Fred had never taken muggle pictures that stayed still. He was smiling at you in most of them. But something crazy happened. You smiled back at him once you realized he was looking at you and before either of you knew it, his lips were on yours. The last flash made you two aware of where you were. You let out a breathless laugh against his forehead. "This is absolutely wild." You said. "I tend to like wild." Fred said. "Well clearly, you just kissed me." You snorted. You climbed out, handing him a photo strip. Fred smiled and you put another strip in your wallet.
"Fred! Time to go!" Someone called. You shifted and he pressed a kiss to you one last time. You savored that feeling. The warmth, the hold he made sure he had on you to make you feel secure, his breath. All of it. "Fred!" Someone called again. "I'll get your address and write to you from Charlie." You said. "okay." He said with a slightly pained smile. He ran off and you shook your head with a smile.
Fred was positive he wasn't going to see you again though. After all... You weren't a wizard. You wouldn't be walking the halls of Hogwarts, you'd be somewhere in Scotland with your family. Fred seemed disappointed as he thought about it more. He wasn't going to see you again.
The day finally came when he sat at the breakfast table in the burrow. Charlie was there to spend time at home for a little while. "So I heard from a little bird that you got along with Y/n." Charlie said. "Yeah." Fred said, seeming sad at the mention. "She's a crazy girl that one, she wants to do what I do." Charlie said. "What fake job did you give her?" George asked. Charlie rose a brow confused. "Wait, she's not--" "Get the car ready Arthur, they've got to go soon." Molly said. "God I miss hogwarts." Charlie said. "Honestly, me too." Bill agreed. Fred got up, getting dressed and finishing packing.
The train ride was long and silent, his thoughts of course drifting to you. What was Charlie going to say before Molly cut him off? He swore for a couple of seconds he saw you on the platform. He knew that wasn't possible. He sat in the great hall, head on his hand. "Oh my God, Fred. Stop moping." George sighed. "Sorry." Fred said not thinking. Dumbledore went through the sorting of first years and he applauded in silence. "And before we begin the opening feast I'd like to introduce Gryffindor's newest member." The door opened behind Dumbledore and Fred's eyes widened as you brushed ash off your cloak. "Y/n L/n.... Uhm... What happened?" Dumbledore asked as you coughed out smoke. "Charlie Weasley happened." You said making a few people laugh.
Dumbledore used a quick cleaning spell and you were as good as new before you saw Fred. He swallowed, looking at you and you stepped down, him getting up and practically sprinting to you. He scooped you into his arms and you laughed. "Surprised?" You asked. "When the hell were you going to tell me you were a wizard!?" Fred asked, cupping your face. You furrowed your brow. "Charlie never told you-- I am kicking your brother's ass." You said making him laugh. "I work part time with your brother during the summers. I'm on a scholarship for dragon studies. You seriously haven't heard about the girl who has the weird friendships with the dragons?" You asked. "Oh my God that was you!?" Fred asked. "Yes!" You laughed before Fred scattered kisses across your face. You smiled and George blinked. "SHE'S REAL!?" he asked making Fred look over. "YES YOU MORON!" Fred said making you laugh hard.
He spent his morning showing you around, him keeping an arm around you, or holding your hand the entire time. Fred would sometimes just look at you. No talking. No comments. Just look. And he knew instantly by listening to you that you were the one.

i can feel it falling (timber)
Rating: G Warnings: None Summary: A look at what inspired Milo not to give up on the possibility of Zack becoming his friend, the day they first met.
A/N: When I fell back into the Dwampyverse fandom, I foolishly said that I didn’t know if I was gonna write anything for MML. I really should’ve known better. So here’s a little something inspired by @wiz-witch‘s post here!
I wish I’d had it done in time for MML’s 4th anniversary but such is life. Reblogs/comments would be greatly appreciated, and a good response will let me know whether I should write the other one-shot ideas I’ve got. Hope you enjoy! - Aqua

~*~
Milo approaches the bus stop with a bounce in his step.
It’s been a relatively light morning so far. There was just one bird nesting in his hair when he woke up, and it relocated to the backyard without much fuss. He got through both of his showers without slipping, getting soap in his eyes, or breaking the water system (the second shower was because the garbage disposal spewed breakfast scraps back up at him, but still, that could’ve been worse).
He even gets to the bus stop before Melissa, only a few boys from school present. It takes a couple seconds before he hears shoes scuffling away from him, which isn’t surprising. It’s very rare for him to actually end up on the bus, but when he does, it makes for an… eventful ride. He can’t fault them for being cautious, since it’s looking more and more like it might actually be one of those days-
“What’s that all about?”
That’s an unfamiliar voice.
Milo turns to the speaker. It’s a boy around his age, dark-skinned with frizzy black hair. He’s dressed simply in a yellow shirt and jeans, a red backpack at his sneakers. He’s looking at Milo with confusion, and something akin to concern.
“Oh, you’re new here,” Milo realizes. It’s strange for someone to transfer schools after the start of the semester, but stranger things have happened. He sighs good-naturedly, going on to explain, “I’ve got a bit of a reputation.”
The boy blinks before amusement tugs at his mouth, and he quirks a brow. “So what are you, a tough guy?”
That might be teasing, Milo’s not sure. “Oh, I don’t think anyone’s ever called me tough,” he says. And this is really pressing his luck, but he can’t help being polite and offers his hand. “I’m Milo.”
The boy actually takes Milo’s hand, and smiles when he does it. “I’m Zack.”
Of course, the other boys at the stop immediately urge Zack against it, but Milo isn’t fully paying attention. He instantly commits Zack’s name to memory because if there’s one thing he’s learned, it’s that knowing his classmates’ names helps soften the blow when he accidentally lands them in the hospital for the first time.
Despite the warning, Zack doesn’t let go right away. His hand is warm, and a little bigger than Milo’s. Mostly softer than Milo’s too, but unexpectedly calloused in telltale places, like he plays a guitar of some sort. That’s interesting.
“So what exactly is this reputation?” Zack asks, seeming more curious than concerned now.
Milo tilts his head. “Well, people have used the J-word, but you know what they say. Sticks and stones can damage your vital organs, so always wear body armor.”
The original meaning of the phrase is still implied. As a Murphy, harsh words are extremely low on his list of things to worry about. At least, that’s how he tries to keep it. It’s not that words dont affect him at all, he just has steps he takes to prepare himself for them, like he would for any other unpleasant event. Just as he wears body armor to protect against physical harm, he protects his feelings under his carefully crafted demeanor.
Lots of people think his cheeriness is default, but in reality, it’s a conscious choice. It’s his emotional armor. Words hurt him less if he chooses to be upbeat and optimistic, rather than let himself despair. That just creates a negative feedback loop, which doesn’t help anything.
Before Zack can inquire further, Melissa shows up to the stop. Milo gets preoccupied by their conversation and forgets that Zack’s still waiting on an explanation until he interjects. But right as Milo is about to elaborate, Murphy’s Law kicks in.
Milo has just enough time to slap his spare helmet onto Zack’s head before they turn and run. And it is both of them; Zack’s taken off without any prompting- he didn’t freeze like so many people do for their first disaster, that’s good. He’s screaming quite a bit, but that’s to be expected. And more surprising is that Zack’s keeping pace with Milo. Not many people can match his speed when he’s going full-tilt like this.
“-wait, why aren’t you screaming?!” Zack demands suddenly.
Milo’s intrigued. Most people who get caught up in his Murphy’s Law don’t have the presence of mind to question why he’s calm while being chased down the street by some devastatingly heavy object.
“I find it doesn’t help,” he answers simply. “Just hurts the larynx.” While he runs and talks, part of him is absentmindedly planning his next move, and he adds, “hand me that bungee, and you’d better hold onto my backpack.”
Milo winds up his throw. Even as Zack exclaims, “Wait, what?” he feels the other boy grab on as instructed, and then they’re up in the air.
Zack maintains his hold while they flip, and when the bungee snaps and drops them on top of the drainage pipe. He’s strong, Milo notes with pleasant surprise. More impressively, Zack doesn’t go careening off of the spinning cylinder- he manages to stay upright beside Milo. That’s a rare skill, for sure. Maybe he’s taken log-rolling classes, for whatever reason. Or, he’s just exceptionally quick on his feet. An athlete, maybe.
“That bungee was definitely defective,” Milo comments, if only to fill the space.
Zack offers no reply, even as Milo sends Diogee home. The pipe takes them through a road barrier, down a rocky incline, through a wooden fence, off of a thankfully low cliff, and into a shallow pit of mud. They barely have time to blink the mud from their eyes before the pipe falls down after them, and Milo tells Zack to scooch over- which he does with little hesitation.
They fit neatly through the center of the pipe, and a wave of mud sends them up to the top.
Zack glances over at Milo, his sudden stillness probably due to shock. “… the J-word wouldn’t happen to be jinx, would it?” he ventures.
Even though he knows it wasn’t used maliciously, Milo can’t stop himself from flinching. He brushes it off with a laugh, though it comes out slightly apologetic. “Yeah, that’s the one.” He pulls himself up onto the rim of the pipe, offering Zack his hand.
Miraculously, Zack accepts his help, and they climb over the edge and drop into the mud below.
Milo wipes his face off with a towel from his backpack. “I have EHML,” he explains. “Extreme hereditary Murphy’s Law. You know, ‘anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.’ Around me.” He studies Zack with a hint of apprehension, the other boy doubled over to catch his breath. He doesn’t look angry or upset or scared, but Milo can’t always tell.
“Well,” is all Zack says. “Alright, then. How are we gonna catch the bus?”
Milo blinks, handing Zack the towel. “Whenever stuff like this happens, the driver usually gives me a few minutes to make it back in case it’s something light. If we hurry, we should be able to get there in time.”
Zack cleans his face and gives the towel back to Milo, brows raised. “Lead the way, I guess.”
Well, indeed. Milo leads the way, and Zack follows.
~*~
Naturally, they miss the bus.
Zack’s definitely in some kind of shock now. He doesn’t even scream when the oil spill in the rock quarry goes up in flames. Milo gently suggests that they go through the woods instead. And then the shock seems to wear off when they’re beset by a pack of hungry wolves.
Shock and panic can interchange remarkably quickly, in some people.
While Milo knows from experience that wolves do, in fact, love peanut butter, Murphy’s Law isn’t yielding anything today. One of the wolves lunges at the same time he tosses the sandwich, and it gets thrown right back, sticking to Zack’s shirt. That elicits a shrill scream from him, and Milo has to fight the urge to cringe. This is not a great first impression, even by Murphy’s Law standards.
At this point, Milo’s pretty sure that the presence of the sandwich has no bearing on the wolves’ desire to attack them, but he grabs a stick and peels it off anyways, if only to try and save Zack’s shirt from being stained too badly.
They escape by scrambling up a tree, but the situation is complicated by the presence of an irate beehive.
A wolf with a beehive stuck on its face is a new one. Luckily, Zack continues to demonstrate remarkable survival instincts, such as ‘dodging when a wolf with a beehive stuck on its face lunges at you’ and ‘running when a wolf with a beehive stuck on its face gives chase.’ He’s keeping up well enough, though he might be starting to fatigue because he lags slightly behind Milo. And he’s still screaming a little, but Milo isn’t holding that against him.
In the end, they don’t escape the wolf so much as they accidentally plunge through an open manhole. But it’s not a high fall, and Milo’s not one to look a gift horse in the mouth. Or, to look a sewer in the open manhole.
Milo lands on his feet in the middle channel, which is fortunately shallow. Zack crashes in right behind him.
“Here,” Milo hands Zack a headlamp from his backpack, “these will help us navigate in the dark.”
Zack’s voice follows him after a moment. “Dude… if and when we get out of here, I’m gonna have to go my own way. No offense, I just can’t handle all of… this.”
Milo’s heart trips inside his chest. He wants to protest that Zack has, in actuality, handled everything just fine. Truly, even Melissa would be impressed, and he’s sure she will be when he regales her with the story later today. But he knows that isn’t the crux of the matter.
“A- all of what?” he asks quietly, his voice wavering slightly despite his best efforts.
The answer is painfully obvious as a raccoon leaps out at him from a pipe, sailing over his ducked head and disappearing into murky sewer water. Milo grips his backpack tighter and keeps walking.
“This cyclone of calamity that follows you everywhere you go!” Zack exclaims in disbelief, his voice echoing in the tunnels. “How do you live like this?!”
Milo supposes this was inevitable. It’s not often that someone gives him a chance- usually it’s something like this, a new kid who doesn’t know any better- but it always ends the same way. He accepted long ago that Melissa would be his only school friend, and he’s okay with that.
Right now, they’ve reached the point where Milo will say he understands and apologize for putting Zack in danger. He’ll get him out of the sewer and part ways, only seeing Zack as much as school demands. Or less than that, if Zack decides to switch schools and get a restraining order. That’s happened before. But really, this is where Milo should ‘cut Zack loose,’ if he’s speaking metaphorically.
Except.
Except Milo doesn’t want to.
It’s a bizarre sensation. He’s never put up a fight before, whenever someone decided he wasn’t worth all the danger associated with Murphy’s Law. He almost lost Melissa that way, and was incredibly fortunate she decided to choose him. Typically, it’s easier for everyone if he just accepts it without complaint, and he doesn’t like making a scene. But this time, every part of him is rebelling against the idea.
He really, really doesn’t want to lose Zack. Zack, who’s fast and strong and quick on his feet. Zack, who has good instincts and knows how to trust them. Zack, who willingly followed Milo all this way despite knowing about his EHML. He doesn’t come across people like Zack every day.
Right now, it’s just him and Zack in a dark tunnel. There’s no one else around to worry about, no judgmental looks or scolding words. No one to tell Zack that he shouldn’t be around Milo. So maybe, this time, Zack can really decide for himself. Maybe, deep down beneath the knee-jerk fear reaction, he feels what Milo does, and knows that leaving would be the wrong choice.
Maybe Milo can fight for this.
So instead, Milo asks, “How do you live like that?”
Zack’s voice is hesitant. “What do you mean?”
“I mean,” Milo turns around, frustration nipping at him because it’s always so hard to put these things into words, “you wanna live like those other kids? They took a bus to school today. A bus! Does that seem like more fun to you?”
That really doesn’t say everything he means. It doesn’t say ‘I think you’re amazing and destined for so much more than an ordinary life’ or ‘I feel better with you by my side so please don’t go.’ But none of that comes easily to Milo, so it’ll have to do.
Zack stops and thinks about it. Really thinks about it. Milo holds his breath.
“Hm. Alright,” Zack says simply. He hops over the middle channel, landing next to Milo on the other side. Closer than most people are willing to get if they don’t have to. He shoves his hands in his pockets and looks at Milo expectantly. “Where to next?”
Milo is almost stunned by the sheer relief that washes over him, but he pushes through it. “Well, there’s a loose grate up over here to the left,” he says, turning around to resume walking. “I’ve been here before.”
“Of course you have,” Zack says, and it actually sounds fond.
Milo’s heart is running now, though he’s not sure why.
~*~
As they scramble their way through the construction site, Milo can’t help but think that they make a good team.
He knows he’s letting himself get too attached, too quickly. At the end of this, Zack could very well change his mind. Or maybe tomorrow, or after a week. Maybe his tolerance of Murphy’s Law has a limit. He wouldn’t be the first.
But they’re incredibly in-sync, for having just met not even a half-hour ago. They don’t even speak as they navigate the various hazards together. Zack seems to be relying on his instincts and cues from Milo, and they escape unscathed, floating down the river on the detached bed of a dump truck.
After they avoid the wolf (again) and Milo sends Diogee home (again), Zack climbs over to sit next to him, leaning back on his arms. His hand is close to Milo’s knee, close enough that their hands would be touching if Milo put his down. And the way Zack’s looking at him right now… his heart’s acting up again. Maybe he should get checked for arrhythmia.
“You know,” Zack starts, “I don’t know if it’s the adrenaline talking, but I’m starting to feel like we can handle anything that comes our way.”
If that’s how adrenaline makes Zack talk, Milo certainly doesn’t mind it. It’s not often that someone else is doing the reassuring, unless it’s Melissa or his family. And the confidence Zack says it with is an incredible thing. Even if it is just adrenaline.
Of course, now that Zack’s gone and said something like that, Murphy’s Law can’t resist the opportunity, and a massive tidal wave appears out of nowhere to carry them out of the river and straight off the edge of a cliff.
This time, Zack doesn’t scream. They plummet silently for a couple seconds before he turns his head towards Milo, almost casually, and says, “Well, maybe not anything…”
Milo would laugh at that, but then they faceplant onto the dome of an alien spacecraft and suddenly have other things to worry about.
~*~
Somehow, they end up at school on time and unscathed.
Zack thinks he might not have fully processed everything yet, because he feels… surprisingly okay. Considering what happened. But really, it seems silly to freak out and make a huge deal out of it when they’re both perfectly fine.
Aside from missing lunches, that is, but the redhead sitting in front of him- who he recalls as Melissa- has that covered. They don’t have time for formal introductions before the teacher comes in and begins class, but context clues tell Zack that she’s Milo’s only friend. And from what he can piece together, she orchestrated a betting pool to ensure they’d have something for lunch in the event theirs were destroyed.
So she’s either psychic, or stuff like this happens often.
That gets filed under ‘things to think about later,’ next to everything else that just happened. Right now, he has to focus on getting oriented to his new school. Which is… actually pretty boring, compared to this morning. Meeting his teachers, figuring out his schedule, finding his locker… it’s crazy to think he was stressing about this stuff just last night.
He gets strange looks here and there, and catches a few murmurs of, “Someone better warn the new kid” and “Wonder how long that’s gonna last” that make him… oddly indignant. He doesn’t like the feeling that his new classmates are judging his choice to stick by Milo.
He also doesn’t like the attention he’s attracted from Melissa. She’s nice enough, but he catches her staring at him sometimes, this intense look in her eyes, like she’s trying to puzzle something out, and it gives him the creeps.
Someone remind him not to get on her bad side…
If something’s up, Milo’s oblivious to it. He’s happy to help Zack around to their classes, and never falters under the stares or whispers or occasional small mishaps that occur. And they are small; nothing else that happens that day can compare to their crazy morning.
Which is perfectly fine by Zack. No complaining here.
The relative calm gives him a chance to actually get a good look at Milo- something that was neglected in all the terror. He’s deceptively average at a glance; pale, brown hair, brown eyes. An ever-present smile on his face. His outfit’s a little odd; shorts, sweater vest, loafers. And Zack quickly finds out that Milo’s backpack isn’t just a regular school backpack that happens to contain a random assortment of items.
Milo wears it nonstop throughout the day, never stashing it under his desk or in his locker. Not even during lunch. That also gets filed under ‘things to think about later.’
Along with the fact that Milo has a lot of scars. Like, a lot.
Zack remembers the conversation at the bus stop, but in the light of day it’d been easy to overlook. Milo’s so pale, the faint marks don’t show up that much until they’re under more contrasting light. And again, they aren’t running for their lives, so Zack can take the time to notice the dozens of scars on Milo’s arms, knees, and face.
Some are small pockmarks, some are lines of varying thickness, some are patchy blotches. Some of them look surgical in nature, while others Zack can’t even begin to speculate about. After their morning together, it’s not hard to imagine why Milo’s acquired so many scars in his short life, but it’s… sobering, to say the least.
Today wasn’t the rule. Milo gets hurt a lot. Like, a lot.
And so Zack’s starting to think this morning was actually really lucky, all things considered. Part of him wants to reconsider his decision. Not so much out of fear that he’ll get hurt, but because he’s not sure he can handle seeing Milo get hurt.
But then Milo catches him staring once. Their eyes meet briefly before Milo’s cheeks flush and Zack looks away, his stomach flipping like it did when they were freefalling together, and he already knows he’s in for the long haul.
~*~
Melissa doesn’t get a chance to speak to Milo alone until lunch, when Zack excuses himself to the bathroom and their little three-person table becomes its usual two-person table.
Milo, who had been excitedly recounting the morning’s events for her, suddenly falls silent as soon as Zack’s out of earshot. He looks up at her apprehensively, fidgeting with his hands, and Melissa already knows what’s on his mind before he says anything.
“So, uh, what- what do you think of him?” he asks quietly.
Melissa tilts her head, considering. She hadn’t thought much of the guy at the bus stop, simply recognizing that he was a new kid and thus didn’t know not to stand that close to Milo. She’d been surprised to see Zack stuck with Milo through all that happened, and seemed none the worse for wear.
“It sounds like he handled himself well,” she concedes.
Milo nods enthusiastically. “Yeah, he really did. I was very impressed.”
“I can tell,” Melissa says, amused.
Milo laughs sheepishly, rubbing the back of his neck. Is that a blush? “I just, I know we haven’t really hung out with other people in… forever. I didn’t mean to have this whole adventure with him, without you, it just happened.” His expression sobers. “And- and I like him, and I think he’d be a good fit for us, but if you don’t, then just say the word. I’ll understand.”
Then he gives her that little smile of his, the one that’s sad at the edges like he’s already expecting a certain answer and has resigned himself to it. The one he uses whenever he’s apologizing for some Murphy’s Law related incident. The one that makes her want to shake him and say, “It’s not your fault, you deserve better.”
Over the years, some people have tried to stick around Milo just for the spectacle of it. A chance to see what the deal with the ‘disaster kid’ was (particularly back when Diogee was allowed to accompany Milo to school as his service dog). They didn’t care about Milo as a person.
And worse, Milo never caught on. He really thought someone was giving his friendship a chance, and was crushed when they inevitably decided it wasn’t worth the risk.
It only happened a handful of times before Melissa established herself as “someone you do not want to cross” and people were too scared to try it anymore, but it took a toll on both of them. Milo’s convinced that he’s destined to go through life alone, with no one but Melissa at an arm’s length away.
And Melissa’s instantly suspicious of anyone who shows an interest in Milo. Admittedly, she might’ve jumped the gun a few times, and chased off potential friends who could’ve actually had good intentions. After all, some people genuinely did try to be his friend, and just couldn’t handle Murphy’s Law. Mostly new kids like Zack. But whenever someone who already knew them started getting closer, Melissa’s defensiveness quickly deterred any further advances, before she even knew whether they were sincere or not.
Those are acceptable loss margins in her opinion, if it meant Milo didn’t have to suffer another heartbreak.
But she knows he’s lonely. More than others would think, and probably more than he’s willing to admit to himself. The two of them are close, but one person can’t be someone’s whole world. He’s always wary of putting too much on her, so she knows there are holes she isn’t filling.
If she’s being honest, it might be nice to have someone else around to help handle the Murphy mayhem. From what she’s heard, Zack is plenty capable- and that’s without any prior experience. She could do worse for someone to take under her wing. Plus, she hasn’t gotten strange vibes from him yet, regarding Milo. He seems genuine.
And Milo really seems to like Zack. Probably more than he’s willing to admit to himself.
So much so, in fact, it speaks volumes that he’d break this budding friendship if she asked him to. It scares her, sometimes, how much of Milo’s heart she seems to hold. They’ve won each other’s trust and loyalty a thousand times over since they first became friends, but all she really did in the beginning was show him some basic kindness. That’s all it took for him to decide he was devoted.
The wrong person could really abuse that.
… Zack better not be the wrong person.
“He’s in,” Melissa decides.
The way Milo’s face lights up almost makes all her worries go away.
Almost.
Zack will have to watch himself around her. If she gets a single whiff of any funny business from him, he’s done, and she’ll make him regret ever switching schools.
But even Melissa has to admit, the soft way Zack looks at Milo when he returns to the lunchroom and Milo happily waves him over makes her think she probably doesn’t have anything to worry about.
Probably.

Functional Dysfunction - Chapter 3 - Abortion Day - Rheese
written by @anotheronechicagobog
warnings: swearing, abortion, mention of vomit, stress, Daniel Charles is an ass, Connor is still dating Robyn just so you guys know
Tumblr media
Avoiding Maggie and Manning was easier said than done. She was working in neuro, not the ED, but they still managed to corner her only forty-five minutes into her shift. She'd managed to escape by being called to do rounds but she knew she wouldn't be so lucky next time. She was trying to think of a game plan or an excuse, just something she could use when they hunted her down next time, but she was coming up empty. Manning had mother's intuition and Maggie is a living, breathing lie detector. So she was drowning herself in work, Dr. Abrams had just given her a bland stare when she was in his office that morning. "I'll give you the extra work because Anderson is out sick, but don't take this as an invitation to distract yourself because of your pregnancy." Sarah had only managed to make choking noises as she wished a hole would swallow her. "I'm a doctor, don't look so shocked. I will need to know what adjustments will need to be made to your schedule depending on your condition, but that can be handled at a later date. I will not tell anyone because I do not partake in hospital gossip, but I must ask that you refrain from talking about it excessively should you choose to share the news, this is a workplace."
"O-of course." So, now two people knew and neither of them was the father. But she was getting an abortion so what did it matter? Plus, Jimmy had gotten back together with Chilli for the... Third? Time... Honestly, she'd stopped keeping track because, to be frank, she wasn't a fan of gossip herself. So she was pushing everything but neurology to the back of her mind and focusing on her patients. It was actually helping, being methodical and relatively unemotional. She'd heard when she was a med student that Dr. Abrams was unnecessarily cruel but Sarah didn't believe that to be true at all. Sure he was cold and blunt, but in his field, there was even less room for error than there usually was when treating someone. Dousing bad odds in sugar wasn't going to make anything better and Sarah thought that his demeanour and the way he presented things actually made patients sober up and recognize just how serious he was being. And no, the man did not have a humble bone in his body, but everyone has flaws and considering how low his mortality rate is compared to other neurosurgeons, she considers it a flaw well-earned.
Sarah was doing the pre-ops for a patient who was going to have a sizable brain tumour removed, the tumour was actually in the best spot possible, you know, considering it's a brain tumour. She was going to be scrubbing in provided she completed the pre-ops to Dr. Abrams' expectations. "Reese."
"Ah!" She whirled around to see Manning standing behind her a pensive look on the older woman's face. "Dr. Manning, you snuck up behind me." She placed her hand over her chest in an attempt to slow her racing heart, not just from being startled, but because now might be time for the confrontation she'd been working so diligently to avoid. "How else was I supposed to talk to you? You've been avoiding Maggie and I."
"Not actively, I just have a lot of work to do. You know how much effort and time it takes to do a double specialty."
"Don't lie to me Reese, I know that something's wrong. We can help you, you just need to talk to us!"
"There is nothing wrong, though! I am fine, I just need you and Maggie to stop jumping down my throat."
"Wow, settle down, Sarah. You're not usually this irritable, so there definitely is something wrong."
"Dr. Manning I need my resident now, so if you could stop interrogating her in the hallway that would be wonderful."
"Bye Dr. Manning."
"Reese-" Sarah turned back to Natalie to give her a quick thumbs up and smile, something she hoped would reassure her, before continuing behind Dr. Abrams at a speedy pace. "How's our patient doing?"
"His labs are good, cell count normal, temp hasn't gone up, the scans were a little concerning though. The tumour has gotten bigger since the last scan. By half a millimetre." Dr. Abrams stopped walking abruptly, grabbed the scan from the still speed-walking Sarah, and studied it intently while Sarah nearly tripped over herself trying to stop. "You are correct. His tumour is growing, we need to remove it today. It's impressive that a first-year resident caught that slight discrepancy. Scrub up and inform the head OR scheduling team." She nodded and ran ahead to the neuro nurse's station.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dr. Abrams' steady hands delicately probed their patient's brain, carefully moving the scalpel to separate the tumour from the rest of the brain. Sarah was at his side studying his movements and answering all his questions. " And what do we do next Dr. Reese?"
"The tumour is ready to be removed, we place it in a surgical tray to get transferred to pathology to be tested."
"Good. I want you to take the tumour there personally, the growth rate is concerning. Attend to my post-ops afterwards."
"Of course Dr. Abrams." Sarah took his orders very seriously and refrained from doing a happy dance the second she exited the OR. The tumour was moved from the surgical tray to a plastic container marked for biological testing before she washed her arms and scrubbed down. As she headed to the elevator she noticed Maggie talking to the OR nurses stationed at the desk. Their eyes met and Sarah knew that Maggie, like Manning, weren't going to stop insisting she was acting differently until she wasn't. As the doors closed she took a deep breath and revelled in the relief that her abortion was tomorrow.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sarah finished her shift completely starving and a little disheartened. News of Robyn's admittance to the hospital had become widespread, she'd had to act like she hadn't already known when Doris jumped next to her in the cafeteria before flittering off to tell another person who had no business knowing that information. Sarah felt angry on Robyn's behalf, the poor woman was going through something so terrifying, and now she wasn't even able to defend herself from others slandering her. She'd wanted to say something to Doris, snap back at her, but the gossip had slithered away before she could even get a word out.
Her day got even worse when Jimmy came in with a victim, riding in ambo 61 while Sylvie was on vacation visiting her parents. It was hands down the most awkward interaction ever. He handed off the patient to her, but then wouldn't go away. And Chilli was glaring at her the whole time. Sarah briefly considered that maybe they were on a break or having a tiff and he was trying to make the other paramedic jealous, and then just got more annoyed. She just looked at him incredulously before focusing back on the patient. He still didn't leave. "Jimmy, let's go restock... Jimmy. Let's go." She could feel his eyes boring into her and could feel her blood boiling. What was his problem? His job was done, it was time for her to do hers now. Instead, he was jabbering on about shrimp, the Blackhawks, and her hair, of all things. She closed the curtains on him, only for him to open them back up with a smug smile. All despite the fact that everyone was telling him to leave, Dr. Manning, April, Doris, Maggie. "Uh, hey, dude? Could you maybe leave her alone? She's supposed to fix my arm which has a shard of glass sticking out of it, not being creeped on by you." She couldn't believe it took her patient saying something to get him to leave.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sarah rolled her neck, trying to shake the day away while she relished in a moment of silence in her hiding place when Connor found her. "I heard that you had a pretty crappy morning."
"You could say that."
"So, Jimmy showed up?"
"He was a paramedic today."
"Well, that's debatable. Paramedics leave after they hand off a patient."
"Yeah, I know. It was... Really weird. Honestly, it's probably because he's working with Chilli and they're going through something."
"They're always going through something."
"Tell me about it."
"So what really happened? Cause I've heard a few different versions at this point."
"The ambulance called ahead with possible neurological damage, he was fine but it's better to be safe than sorry, and Jimmy just wouldn't leave. I was just trying to do my job and he was just standing there, watching me, and talking about my hair. He was asked to leave so many times, Dr. Manning, nurses, hell even his partner joined in. I tried to close the curtain twice but he just opened it again, and actually looked a little insulted that I did. I don't know what his deal was."
"Damn. I don't know him very well but he kinda seems like a tool."
"He is, but I wasn't exactly looking for anything long-term with him."
"Fair enough."
"Speaking of long-term relationships, how's Robyn doing? Your meeting with the hospital about her release is today, right?"
"Yeah, it's in an hour. Robyn's been doing good, I'm just trying to calm down right now."
"Nervous?"
"Angry."
"About?"
"Dr. Charles is her father who abandoned her and has spent the last several months trying to forge some kind of a relationship with her. He has no right to claim to know what's best for her, personal or professional. She was meeting with a psychiatrist, they'd come up with a treatment plan, she was actually talking about admitting herself to psych. But now? She's totally shut down, completely defensive, and I want to help her but she won't let me."
"Something to bring up to her is resuming treatment and all the plans she had before, just at a different hospital. Gaffney isn't the only hospital with psych facilities, Lakeshore's is actually better rated. So she'd still get treatment but her files wouldn't be accessible by her father and none of his orders regarding her care would be taken seriously, he doesn't have clearance there."
"That's a great idea, Sarah. Thank you, I'll make sure to bring it up with her."
"No problem. I really hope that Robyn gets proper treatment and as much space from her father as she wants."
"Me too. I should probably get going, I have to change out of my scrubs and meet with my lawyer before the meeting."
"Good luck!"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Hey, Reese, are you going to Molly's?"
"No, I'd rather go home and get some sleep."
"You haven't really been coming out with us a lot, are you okay?"
"Did I ever really go that often in the past?"
"Touché."
"And, I'm fine. Completely fine, but Manning and Maggie don't believe me and I suspect that they go to you too, Choi."
"Guilty as charged, we're just worried about you."
"But there is nothing to be worried about."
"You can't eat, you've been throwing up, you've somehow gotten even more private and secretive, and Borelli's been really weird lately. Always asking where you are, how you're doing, what your day was like, and then there was that whole incident in the ED. Something's going on, Sarah. We are worried about you."
"You're right, something's going on, but it's nothing bad and certainly nothing I can't handle myself."
"So there is something going on." She just sighed and gave him an exasperated look. He held his hands up in defence and sent a weak smile her way. "I guess I'll see you later then, Reese."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It was abortion day, as Connor had so lovingly dubbed it. Sarah was nervous beyond belief and she had no idea why. It was a quick, painless procedure. A procedure she wanted. There was nothing to be afraid of. She'd been in an OR a couple of times to watch abortions being performed during her OB/GYN rotation. The procedure was simple and safe, there should not have been an entire damn zoo stomping around in her stomach, there was nothing to be nervous about... Right? The knots in her stomach kept twisting and twisting, bile was rising up her throat and she just couldn't hold it back. She barely made it to the bathroom in time.
She spent ten minutes gripping the toilet bowl as her body shook and was drained of energy every time she opened her mouth. Her hair had clumps of vomit and toilet water infect her curls. She was cold everywhere but her throat which felt like it was burned with how raw it was. Tears prickled her eyes, but she had no idea why. Yes, she was going through hormone changes but she hadn't actually reached the hormone stage of pregnancy yet. Stage of pregnancy. She felt so strange whenever she thought about it, so she tried not to. She'd finished getting dressed in leggings and a sweater when her buzzer went off. Puzzled, she pressed the button on the intercom system. "Hello?"
"Sarah? Hi, it's Connor. I'm here to take you to the clinic for your procedure if you want. Just to be supportive and take you home after."
"Connor, you don't have to."
"I know, I'm offering. Everyone needs a support system. You've been mine while dealing with this whole Robyn debacle, I'll be yours through this."
"Thank you, Connor. I'll take you up on it, I'll be downstairs in a few minutes."
"Okay, see you then."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The car ride was smooth and luxurious, solely because of Connor's high-end car. Inside, Sarah was nothing but nerves. The sinking feeling in her stomach that had been present since she booked the abortion got heavier and heavier the closer they got to the clinic. Connor was trying to keep the mood light by talking about how hectic med school had been in Guadulajara but was failing through no fault of his own, it was all Sarah's. When they actually made it to the clinic Sarah was on the verge of violently vomiting all over the interior of the car. "Sarah? Are you okay?"
"I'll be fine."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes."
"Sarah, you don;t have to do this if you don't want to."
"I know."
"Okay. Then take a deep breath, I've got you."
Sarah doesn't actually remember exiting the car on shakey legs. Or pushing through the mob of pro-life jackasses. Or being escorted to the admitting room by a security guard. One moment she was sitting in the passenger seat with Connor holding her hand and running his thumb across her knuckles and the next she was standing beside him in line to talk to the secretary who sat behind bullet-proof glass. The blue walls and colourful decor felt alien to her for some reason. "Name?"
"Sarah Reese."
"And is this your support person?"
"Yes."
She answered the rest of the secretary's questions despite feeling like she was underwater, and was instructed to take a seat and wait for her name to be called. The longer she sat there, the more suffocated she felt, and Connor's supportive hand-holding and an arm wrapped protectively around her shoulders only did so much. It felt like they sat there for eternity, time dragging on in the most cruel, painful way. The woman who had been opening the frosted door to call out names and guide people through to the back reappeared. "Sarah Reese?" She didn't move. She couldn't. "Sarah?" This time it was Connor. "Sarah? Please say something, anything." She could feel the weight of everyone in the room staring at her. "I can't do this Connor."
"Okay, then let's get out of here."

i don’t believe in an interventionist god
Sometimes, Fate sticks you together for years. Sometimes, Fate sticks you together for half an hour.
Or — maybe, you don’t meet each other because of Fate’s best attempts to bring you together. Maybe it’s in spite of its best attempts to keep you apart.
[this IS a pjo fic, i promise. ao3 link in the title]

Adam didn’t have the time or emotional wherewithal for dying grandmothers.
It sounded so terrible, but it was the truth. Today had been a hard one. The transfer from Chicago to New York City had been a much needed change of pace, a welcome one, but his workload at the new hospital was so much more stressful than the last. Bigger, more reputed, and exponentially busier. It ate away all of his time and more than a fair bit of his peace of mind.
But whatever. He could take the late nights and early mornings, the incessant paging by his attendants, the neverending piles of paperwork and his Chief Resident’s pissy attitude on even the worst of days. As much as it sucked, he was the one who had signed up for this kind of life. He’d known what he was getting into the minute he’d decided to become a doctor. He had known he would spend the rest of his life paying off the student loans for med school, being bossed around by his superiors and being puked on by his poor patients. Whatever. All of that had been — to be completely cheesy, but also completely honest — a cost he had been willing to pay for a chance to save lives.
Technically, Adam had also known that death would be a tragic but inevitable part of the life he had chosen. As terrible as it was to think about it, Adam had thought about it. He would mourn the patients he lost, he would be kind to the families he broke the news to, he would not forget the losses he witnessed, he would remember each and every one of those faces and names. But at the end of it, he would pull himself up, because he had a job to do, lives to save still. He would mourn each patient, but he would not drown in grief. His seniors had warned him that growing too attached to patients was a slippery slope, a fine balance — you wanted to be kind and warm and empathetic, but losses piled up over the years. To be a good doctor, they had said, you had to be kind and you had to remember the losses, but you also had to make peace with the presence of death.
Easier said than done.
The thing was, it wasn’t even his day to be on call. He’d been covering a shift for a friend with a family emergency, and it was going to be like any other day. Draining. Tiring. But normal.
And then the kid had died.
Sweet. Twelve. Brown haired and bright eyed, and so, so sick. Cassie was her name, and her green eyes had fluttered shut bare seconds before she’d flatlined. Her parents had clutched on to each other, the mom nearly collapsing to her knees while the dad buried his face in his wife’s hair and held her up. Adam had spoken to the grieving, broken parents with steady words, and disconnected the girl from life support with steady hands, and he had filled out the paperwork with his steady handwriting, but after that he’d walked out to the reception on his break and suddenly he was no longer steady. It was like he was coming apart at the seams, and Sarah, one of his friends and fellow residents put her phone down and stared at him.
“You alright?” She asked, hand still worrying the phone cord.
“Yeah, just…” Adam closed his eyes and breathed deeply. He could still hear the parents wailing down the hallway as the senior surgeon in charge spoke to them. “You know how it is. She was — uh, very young.”
Sarah nodded in sympathy, “Cassie right? I met her during rounds when I was on Dr Freehold’s service.” She tucked a strand of her red hair behind her ear. “I’m so sorry, Adam.”
“It’s okay. It’s —” Adam reached into his lab coat and pulled out his beeping pager. He groaned. “Aw, shit. Room 114.”
Sarah winced. “Oh, that’s the—“
“Yeah,” Adam sighed, stuffing the pager back into his pocket. “Jack’s off today cause of the family thing, so I’m rounding with Dr Solanki. Wish me luck.”
Old. Sweet. Terminally ill, but still extremely intelligent and alert. Jack was just one of the residents on the case, not the primary attendee, but the way he’d briefed Adam about this particular patient you’d never know it.
Patient 114. She was famous throughout the hospital for her visitors. So sick, but so visibly loved, because there didn’t go a single day without her being visited by a steady stream of children, grandchildren and friends. A remarkable life led, clearly, a life full of overwhelming love.
Adam wondered, sometimes, how a life like that looked from the inside. Wondered it for himself.
He’d never be lonely, for one. For another, he’d never want anything more.
Adam wondered, sometimes, how anyone could get over the loss of a life like that.
He sighed again and read the name on the patient chart. It was a lovely name. Sarah gave him a sympathetic pat on the shoulder and then he was off to meet Dr Solanki.
Dr Solanki waited a second for him to catch up, then she knocked on the door to Room 114. The elderly woman inside had her eyes closed, grey hair a regal cloud on the pillow. She wasn’t sleeping, she was holding herself too stiff for that. “Ma’am? Can I come in?”
The woman opened her eyes. They were sharp eyes, warm and old, but with an intelligent sparkle. They looked like storm clouds.
“Dr Solanki, hello. How are—Oh,” the woman said, moving to sit up straighter she saw Adam. She propped herself up on her pillow. “You’re the one in for Dr Jack Sullivan? He told me he had to leave for Minnesota. Something about his sister?”
Adam nodded and offered his hand. The woman had a surprisingly firm grip. No. Not firm, strong. A President’s handshake. A football team captain’s handshake.
“I’m Dr Tartal,” Adam said, pushing a smile on to his face. He gestured to his clipboard. “I’ve been brought up to speed on your case—“
“Oh, it’s hopeless isn’t it?” The woman laughed gently at Adam’s inability to school his features fast enough. “Ah, I’m sorry, that was blunt. But I’m quite familiar with my disease and the odds, you see. It’s pretty hopeless. There’s not much to do.” She looked at Dr Solanki. “You’d agree, wouldn’t you, Dr Solanki?”
Dr Solanki smiled politely. Patient 114’s illness was not one with a full-stop cure, and they all knew it. It was a smile Adam knew well, a common shorthand for doctors everywhere— yes, for all practicality, but not technically. While medicine was a lot about practicality, patient care was about technicalities. And tact. “There are still many options for—“
“Dr Solanki doesn’t believe in death,” the woman told him. “She doesn’t believe in my death, specifically. There’s always more options for her.” She said it with a distinct fondness; she and Dr Solanki shared a small, familiar smile. “But, alright. I’ll look into your options, Dr Solanki. You have given me months more than my prognosis ever promised.”
Dr Solanki nodded. “The nurse was here to take the temperature earlier, I believe?”
“Yes, I was running a fever, but it broke.” She pointed to Adam. “This one is shaping up to be a good doctor? As good as Dr Sullivan?”
“Dr Tartal is one of our most promising residents,” Dr Solanki said. “You are in very good hands.” She inclined her head. “I’ll get you the relevant literature, and I’ll come in to explain the treatment plan. Have a good day, ma’am.”
“You too, Doctor,” the woman said. “Thank you for everything.”
Dr Solanki shook the woman’s hand, and then with a nod at Adam, she left the room. Adam gave his chart one last once-over and was just about to take his leave as well when the woman fell back with a weary sigh, blowing a strand of grey hair from her face.
“Dr Solanki,” she began, “is the very, very best. I quite literally owe her my life. But there is no hope.”
Adam didn’t say anything. This was the most difficult part of being a doctor, these conversations. No protocol, no training. It wasn’t so much about being a doctor in these moments than it was about being a human. And there was no school for that, no degree.
Good thing, though, Adam thought wryly. He was already drowning in student debt. He didn’t want to tempt Fate, or the American education system.
“I’m not sure if I’ll even make it through the night, to be honest,” the woman said. She closed her eyes. “Gods, I don’t want to die, but I really am so tired.”
Adam still didn’t say anything.
“I’m sorry for unloading this on you,” the woman said at last. “Dr Tartal was it?”
This at least Adam could formulate a response to. “Yes,” he said. “And it’s alright. I don’t mind.”
“My children are running late today,” the woman said. “Weekday, you know. It’s fine, really. I’m glad. They have their own lives, and I’m glad my constant nagging them about that fact has finally gone through their heads. They’ll be here later. But this sudden silence...it’s weird.” She let out a weak chuckle and opened her eyes. “I’ve grown so used to all their overwhelming love, I’ve become greedy. I’ve not been so lonely in a while. I don’t really remember how to be.”
A look inside. Adam had wondered.
“Can you keep me some company?” The woman said. “Of course, only if you aren’t busy. I get that as a doctor—“
“It’s okay,” Adam said. He could spare a moment. The woman reminded him of his grandmother in a way, and how lonely she’d been those final weeks, wasting away in a nursing home on the other side of the country. He drew a chair and sat down next to the bed. “Unless I get paged for an emergency, I can stay.”
“I cannot thank you enough,” the woman said. “I just—I do not want to be alone, now.” She sighed. “Really, I’m lucky,” she said. “Not many get the loving family I have. Believe me, I would know.”
“Is it just your children?” Adam asked. He felt the tips of his ears burn a second later. He was being too forward with this patient. He tried to backtrack. “I mean—“
“My husband passed away ten years ago,” the woman said. Her eyes held a glimmer of sadness, but mainly she seemed amused at Adam’s flustering. “It’s alright, Dr Tartal. I was the one who asked you to stay and keep me company.”
“Has it been terrible?”
“Sad,” she said, “yes. Painful. But we had seen too many of our friends die too early to not take each day for the gift it is. He was seventy. It was a long, good life.”
Adam nodded.
“We built something permanent in our time together,” she said firmly. She wasn’t talking to him now, not exactly. Her eyes were far away. Far away from this hospital room. Far away from now. “Something that will outlast us.”
“That’s—“ Adam struggled to find suitable words. This wasn’t unusual really—people were more willing to share their life stories at the end of their time. It didn’t really make it easier for Adam to react though. “That’s really good,” he finished lamely.
The woman didn’t seem to mind. She was silent for a few moments longer, eyes a million miles away, a million years away.
“Enough about me,” the woman said at last. “Let’s hear about you. You’re from New York?”
“Chicago actually,” Adam said. “Moved here last December.”
“And you like it here?”
“Hm. It’s…” A new start, Adam thought. A new place to call home. He’d worn out Chicago—Chicago with his parents who didn’t speak to each other, Chicago with his old school that had given him nothing to miss, his old hospital that had given him nothing to stay for, Chicago which was much, much bigger than him, but now felt like a glove that pinched his fingers when he wrestled it on, a place he’d outgrown and had to be left behind. “It’s happening,” he settled on. He let out a self-conscious laugh. “I mean, it’s New York. It’s happening. It’s cool.”
“Yeah, I bet. I’m not from New York originally either. But my husband was. Loved it with every fibre of his being. I do too. It’s where I found my home. My family.” The woman weaved her fingers together and looked down. When she looked up, she met his eyes with a tired, knowing expression. “It’s happening certainly. City of the gods, isn’t it?”
That was a strange way to put it, but Adam didn’t say anything. New Yorkers were fiercely and loudly proud of their city—city of the gods wasn’t really the most egotistical or absurd of claims, to be honest. More than a couple of his colleagues had called it “the greatest city in America”, a few even going as far as to say “the greatest city in the world”. Adam didn’t really have anything against the city, or in fact the claim, but he thought that was perhaps a little too bold and presumptuous of his friends, considering that hadn’t lived anywhere else.
“Forgive me if this question is too repetitive,” the woman said. She laughed. “Or too much of your classic “old grandmother you meet at a wedding” question. But I have to always ask, I’m so intrigued; medicine is a gruelling career. What made you choose it?”
A flash of green eyes. Sweet smile. A sob bursting forth as the mother went crashing to the floor, her husband’s arms reaching out to catch her even as tears slipped down his own face. Twelve years old written on a death certificate.
Gruelling was an understatement.
Adam himself wondered why he had chosen it some times.
At first it had been easy to explain—you said I’m going to be a doctor, and people didn’t interrogate you on the hows and whys. They congratulated you, clapped you on the back, went here’s a promising young man! A noble profession! Throughout med school he’d had his reasons, recited carefully to fortify himself during the hardest all-nighters: a good stable job, a way to help people, an interesting profession. It was a fascinating subject to study. It was a noble job, one that could save lives.
And then he had become a doctor. Those reasons shifted and changed, and some days it was worth it. Some days not so much. Everyday it was different.
Today it was this—to see that there were no more Cassies. No more signed death certificates for twelve year olds. No more mothers collapsing to their knees on hospital floors, no more fathers breaking down next to them.
It wasn’t a possible wish, a probable reason. You couldn’t wipe away every tear from every eye, and you could not save every sick child you treated.
It didn’t mean he could not try, however.
That was what it had become for Adam. Trying.
But he didn’t know how to put it in a way that felt impersonal, that didn’t feel naïve and corny, in a way that felt like he wasn’t unloading his deepest wishes on essentially a stranger. So instead he just tried to fix a grin and said, lightly, “Well, I had the scores. And I’ve always liked pushing myself.” This wasn’t the complete truth, but it wasn’t a lie either. And it was enough for a woman he had just met.
The woman seemed to accept the answer. She closed her eyes. “I guess that’s fair enough,” she said. “An ambitious young man.”
That was a way to put it.
“Do you believe in any afterlife?”
Adam shrugged, “Not really sure? Maybe not. My family’s never been big on religion, or God or anything, so that wasn’t really something I’ve thought about.” He paused. “I’m willing to be proved wrong though. After.”
The woman chuckled. “Yeah? Open mind.”
“It would be more interesting than total oblivion, that’s for sure. Do, uh, do you believe? In any afterlife?”
The woman’s hands were clasped tight in her lap. Her good humour seemed to have been replaced by a sudden and jarring sadness, but it didn’t rattle Adam as much as he would have thought. There was something else shining through the sadness, a quiet but ferocious hope that laced her words. “Yes,” she said. “The Underworld.”
Adam’s first thought was underground crime circle, exhilarating despite himself. It was surprising to imagine this woman as part of any crime ring, but it would make a good story for sure. Then he remembered the grainily illustrated “Greek Mythology For Kids!” he had had in his childhood, a birthday gift from a well-meaning aunt who lived too far away and visited far too rarely to get to know his real interests. Adam has only flipped through it once half-heartedly before it had been lost or torn or given away, but he remembered the crude sketch of a dark cavern. Hades it had said. Greek afterlife.
This was probably weirder than the crime ring. But he’d met people with weirder stories. Weirder dreams and hopes. So what if this sweet old woman believed in the Greek underworld? He wasn’t one to pass judgement on people’s beliefs.
And as the people here were fond of saying of the city’s eccentricity—this was New York, after all.
“Hades?” Adam asked.
The woman’s eyes brightened. “You’re familiar?”
“Not really,” Adam said. “But I’ve heard. We all learn Greek myths in school right? Like Icarus, the Orpheus guy…” It has just been a unit in History, to be honest, learnt alongside other cultural tales from around the world. But the woman was alert now. “Something about a cave? Or was it a pit?”
The woman’s face did something complicated, a shadow, a shutter. It was gone as quickly as it came, but some of the hollowness remained in her eyes. “The pit...you mean Tartarus. That’s—well that’s part of the Greek underworld for sure, but not all of it. It’s hell.”
Adam hadn’t signed up for an impromptu Greek mythology lesson, but he guessed he was here now. “Sounds dark.”
The woman didn’t answer.
This was getting weird. Adam hurried on quickly. “Well, if this Tar place is hell, where’s the...heaven? Heaven equivalent? Like, where do the good guys go?”
“Elysium,” The woman said, looking grateful for the sudden change in subject. “The Elysian Fields.”
“The Elysian Fields,” Adam repeated. It had a ring to it, he had to admit. “Sounds—um, very peaceful.”
The woman simply smiled.
“You must really love your colleague if you’re willing to cover their extra shifts. It being Christmas season and your residency and all that. You must be busy already.”
Adam tried not to frown at the woman’s words. It wasn’t like she was wrong—Adam did love his colleagues, they had been through a lot together. Jack was a good friend, his best if he had to pick. But also, it was just one shift. That wasn’t a blood pact. That was a decent thing to do.
Adam played it off with a forced laugh. “Yeah. Basically family.”
Another moment of abrupt silence.
“That’s an important promise to keep,” the woman said. “Family.”
Okay, now Adam really was confused. He loved his friends like family, but it had been—in all practical ways—a throwaway line.
Sure, it was the most common vein of conversation he’d heard from dying patients, especially the elderly ones. Unsolicited pieces of advice. Family is everything, one man had told him last year, and Adam had grit his teeth and nodded, even though the word family had brought him the memory of his mother crying at him on the phone about his father’s new girlfriend. Young kids like you don’t know how much family means till you start losing then. Well, sometimes people didn’t have them in the first place. Never give up on family. Never. That was advice that only worked if everyone followed it. Often, it was just one person dragging them onto a capsized lifeboat. Adam had dismissed most of the well-meaning advice. It was advice for happy, loving homes, for happy, loving families. Blood and water.
But as much as the woman’s words rankled him, there was a hint of something else, a sort of understanding, in her words. He didn’t think she meant family as in blood. As in parents.
Adam swallowed down the bad feeling and said pleasantly, “I’ll do my best.”
“Sometimes the best isn’t enough.” For some reason, the woman’s eyes looked watery. Oh no. Oh no. Adam didn’t know how to approach this.
Luckily, the woman blinked her eyes and the tear was gone. A trick of the light.
“You will keep your promise,” the woman told him, with a sort of finality. “I know that.”
She offered him her hand. Adam hesitated only a moment before taking it. It was a cold and calloused hand, smelling faintly of eucalyptus oil.
“I don’t think I have much time left,” the woman admitted. “I’ve lived a long life. Longer than I ever thought I would get. I hope I’ve lived a good one.”
Adam didn’t trust himself to speak.
In a day full of weird, slightly off comments from the woman, these were probably the most normal words she’d spoken. Yet, they unwound him like nothing else till then had. Adam had sat with patients as they had died, had comforted them in their worst moments. He had grown used to the losses, the way you grew used to other unbearable things—you were alive, and so you bore them, because there was nothing else to do.
This felt different. All deaths were sad, but something in the woman’s touch was familiar. This felt less like sadness and more like quiet devastation. It was a tilting feeling. He had not known this woman for even an hour.
He tried to keep his tone light. “So, the aim is to make it to these Elysian Fields?”
“There’s another part of this Underworld I didn’t tell you about. Isles of the Blest,” she said. “Rebirth. I think...I’ll try thrice.”
Despite himself, Adam felt himself smiling. “Overachiever.”
The woman’s smile was worn out. “But not yet. I want to meet some people first. I want to see my husband. I’ve missed him. More than—more than I thought ever possible, and I thought every possibility, believe me. I want to see some old friends.”
The hollow, slow devastation persisted. It wasn’t unbearable, because nothing truly was, but it was a burning in his stomach. A dull ache. This was not the worst thing to happen to him, this old stranger’s death, but he could feel a weight press on him anyway, a weight like lead on his shoulders, a weight like lead in his stomach.
He wasn’t sure what else to say, but it turned out that was alright, because the next moment the door flung open. “Mom? Hey, I’m sorry we’re late. We got caught up—“
“Grandma!” A small blur of blond hair flew past him in their hurry to jump into the woman’s arms. She obliged for her part, a beaming smile on her face as she lifted her granddaughter into her lap.
“Don’t trouble Grandma,” a young lady wearing a work shirt said, coming to stand by the bed. She caught sight of Adam and gave him a small, kindly smile. “Oh, are you the new doctor?”
“Yes,” Adam replied. He got to his feet. It seemed his use as company was done. He turned to the old woman and tried to smile as genuinely as he could. “It was nice acquainting myself with you, ma’am. I’ll see you tomorrow on rounds. Have a lovely day with your family.”
“Thank you, Dr Tartal,” the woman said. Her grey eyes looked luminous as she smiled, crinkled with laugh lines. “It was nice to see you again.”
It was a jarring second in a day full of jarring seconds, but for one moment he held her gaze, and she looked—familiar. It was only a moment, right before her attention was grabbed by her granddaughter tugging on her shoulder as she began to narrate an incident from her school, but it was a buffering moment. The woman looked quite young caught in it, grey eyes and greying blonde hair that curled like a princess’s and a smile that ached with familiarity. It was gone with a shift of the light.
Adam shook it out of his mind, the weird sense of déjà vu of meeting her eyes, but he couldn’t shake off the way she seemed to have tripped over his name on its way out from her mouth. The way she seemingly swapped some other name for Dr Tartal at the last minute, a last chance at catching herself.
He couldn’t shake off the way she had said nice to see you. The way she seemed to have been unable to catch herself tacking on that “again” to the end of it.
——
Two weeks later
Adam saw it in Jack’s walk. He saw it in the way Dr Solanki hurried past them into the bathroom, eyes red.
It was a strange sort of grief, mourning for a stranger essentially, but regardless, it hit him like a freight train.
“Oh,” Adam said, as Jack met his eyes and gave him a desolate shake of his head. “Oh, God. Man, I’m so sorry—“
“Thank you.” Jack’s voice was heavy. He sighed and came to join Adam at the nurse’s station in front of the OR Board. His friend closed his eyes. “Everyone knew—“ Jack cleared his throat. “We knew there was a risk. She knew there was a risk when she agreed to the surgery. Eighty years, it was always—“ He shook his head. “I have to go tell the family.”
Adam nodded. “Of course.” He clasped Jack’s shoulder as his mind wandered to the small blonde girl who’d been hefted into her grandma’s lap. The sizable entourage of visitors who trailed into Room 114 day after day. The eyes of the old woman, intelligent and alert as she held his hand on the shift he’d covered for Jack, the one day he’d spoken to her. A single hour.
A single hour with her had apparently been enough to make a mark on him.
Adam watched as Jack made the slow, lonely walk to the waiting room. Then he sighed, closed his eyes for a quick moment and went back to his chart. He had paperwork to finish, three patients left on his rounds to visit, and then the clinic. It was going to be a long day.
Thirty minutes later, he was well into his second pile of paperwork when there was a slight shuffle of feet. Adam looked up.
A young girl, maybe fifteen, sixteen, stood still in front of the OR board, electric blue eyes scanning the names. She had a silver jacket on, accessorised with buttons for bands that had lost relevance in Adam’s father’s time, bands that were now only listened to by edgy teenagers rediscovering “real” music and nostalgic old folks with YouTube accounts. Her hair was spiky, streaked blue and white.
The girl tore her eyes away from the OR board just as Adam opened his mouth to ask her if she was alright. She looked taken aback for a moment.
“Can I help you?” Adam asked.
“I’m Thalia Grace,” the girl said after a pause. “I’m looking for a woman in Room, uh—“ she put her hand in her pocket to pull out a hastily scribbled note. “Room 114? She had surgery today—“
“Oh.” Adam put his pen down. He could feel his chest constricting. Was this another granddaughter? “Oh. Um, Thalia—Thalia was it?—are your parents around? You may want to sit down fo this.”
“Oh gods,” Thalia said. “Oh gods, did—the surgery didn’t go well, did it?”
Adam didn’t have the details. “Look, I will be back with someone to explain it for you—“
“No, that’s—that’s fine, that’s…” Thalia looked like she’d been hit. “Are you sure it’s the patient in Room 114, her name—“
“Annabeth Chase passed away earlier this morning, I’m afraid,” Adam said. “There were complications in her surgery.”
Thalia seemed to wilt like a flower. No—not wilt. Sink.
“Let me get you to a place you can sit,” Adam said, moving to guide her to the waiting room. “Is there anything I can do for you? A glass of water? Can I call somebody for you?”
The girl shook her head, moving away. “No. No, it’s…” She blinked and looked up at him. “Time is weird,” she said, sounding much older than a teenager. “Time is weird. I always think I have so much more time than I do. I didn’t think—I didn’t think it would happen today.” She swallowed. She looked stunned. “It doesn’t—it doesn’t really ever get easier.”
Adam could understand very little of what the girl was saying, but he nodded anyway. “Okay. Alright.”
The girl was shaking like a leaf. Adam watched her for a few seconds before realising he had to get someone—preferably Dr Solanki or Jack—to talk to this girl about Mrs Chase. No, Mrs Jackson-Chase. That was what had been on her chart.
Eventually though, the girl stopped trembling. She looked at her feet for a long, long time before her head snapped up and found his eyes. It was a thousand yard stare. It went through him. It went through him and then all of a sudden, it was no longer going through him, but was instead very, very intense.
More staring. More silence.
Adam wasn’t wholly unused to the staring. He didn’t even mind it all that much now, to be honest, even though he hadn’t been a fan of it in middle school. He had unique eyes—pretty, his mother often had said. Heterochromia, a strange yet alluring variant which gave him one eye blue and one eye a hazel that looked gold in the right light. There wasn’t anything more interesting about his face apart from that; he looked like your average twenty-something year old, with his sandy blond hair and easy smile. The only other thing uncanny about his appearance was the odd birthmark that stretched out under his right eye—a dark jagged mark, somewhat a line. But it wasn’t very noticeable unless you knew to look for it.
“Everything alright?” Adam asked.
“Yeah,” Thalia said. She didn’t shift her gaze away. “Yeah—you just...you just remind me of an old friend, that’s all.”

You sighed in complete bliss as you woke up, sunlight barely peeking in through the blinds allowing your eyes to adjust slightly better to the lighting of the room.
You and your husband’s room, to be exact.
You had just gotten home from your honeymoon in Italy the day before, but the honeymoon phase was still certainly there. Tilting your head up to look towards the beautiful male, you couldn’t help but smile as you took in his handsome features. Chiseled jawline, slightly messed up blond hair, perfectly trimmed beard, long eyelashes rested upon his cheeks- how you had gotten so lucky to have someone with both an attractive appearance and personality was beyond you, but you were certainly grateful.
You snuggled more into his broad chest, enjoying the warmth of his arm around you. Even if you were sweating buckets, you wouldn’t have wanted to move. You had never felt more comfortable in your life-- everything about this felt right. You had never thought you’d actually experience something like this; when you heard couples in love gush about how perfect their relationship felt, you had assumed it was a cheesy and even irritating exaggeration. But after being with Chris, you understood. It did not matter that the two of you had your own flaws and occasional arguments. Everything still felt perfect, even fated.
You were closing your eyes to try and sleep off again when you felt him move slightly, a low hum escaping his throat. “You awake, sweetheart?” he mumbled, and his deep voice practically made you shudder. God, you loved how he sounded when he first woke up. “Mmhm,” you hummed in confirmation, glancing up at him again. His eyes were still closed but he was already smiling simply from hearing you respond, his hand moving to squeeze your hip lovingly. “G’morning, darling. Feeling jet lagged?” You nuzzled your head into his bare chest before lazily pressing kisses upon his skin. “Not really…. I slept well.” He let out a deep rumble of content, moving his hand up to run his fingers through your hair while keeping his eyes closed. “Me too. With you, I always do,” he mumbled, moving his head down to kiss the top of yours.
You tilted your head upwards to catch his lips instead, and he happily complied, his own moving against yours in perfect sync. You had meant for it to be a chaste kiss, but as per usual when these kisses happened, the two of you started thinking with another part of your body.
With his muscular arms, he pulled you up on top of his body, lying on his back and holding your waist as he slid your tongue across your lower lip. You gladly opened your mouth to allow him access, occasionally nibbling on his lip every now and then and enjoying the feeling of his tongue playfully prodding at yours. “Mm.. has anyone ever told you… that you are a wonderful kisser?” he inquired in between loving pecks, smirking against your lips. “Mmhm… yes, my eighth grade boyfriend, actually, though I believe he used the word rad….”
He laughed and kissed at the corner of your lips mumbling, “Man, looks like I have some competition then…. how in the world did you choose me over him?” You giggled as you gently rubbed his cheek with your fingers. “It might have something to do with the fact that he knocked up a girl our sophomore year of high school and then transferred to another school.” Chuckling, the man rolled over to pin you down onto the bed now, leaning down to cover your face in kisses. “Okay. Think the ex boyfriend talk is ruining the mood.” He teased, making you laugh as you reached up to grab his face. “Then kiss me properly and bring the mood back,” you playfully demanded, and he gave you an amused look as if impressed by your sudden authority before gladly obliging, leaning down and kissing you with pure love and passion. You kissed him back just as earnestly, fingers running through his soft hair and legs wrapping around his waist to keep his body close. A low groan emitted from his lips as he navigated one large palm up your thigh to keep your leg firmly in place, his fingers pressing into your ass making you whimper for more into his mouth.
When he pulled back for air after a few moments, the two of you completely breathless, he lowered his head to start kissing and sucking on your neck, never one to take a breather once he was in the mood. You moaned in soft breaths as he marked your sensitive flesh as his own, dark marks littering your otherwise smooth skin thanks to eager teeth; ever since you had started dating the man, you had gone through much more foundation than before to cover up all the damn hickeys he gave you. He was the sweetest gentleman you knew, but oh, he liked knowing you were his, and you couldn’t help but be turned on by this side of him.
“I love you,” he suddenly mumbled into the crook of your neck, his hoarse voice making you shiver as well as the chaste kisses that followed. “I love you,” you whispered, fingers running through dirty blond locks, humming upon feeling his beard scratch upon your shoulders. You could feel him grin against your skin.
He moved his mouth down, painting your collarbones in kisses. Impatient fingers found the edges of the cups of your bra, pushing the entire article of clothing up to reveal soft breasts he loved so much. He wasted no time in kissing each one lovingly, tongue slowly toying with each nipple while his hand squeezed and groped the sensitive flesh simultaneously. He lifted his head up to watch your face as he cupped and pushed them together, fingers pinching your nipples at the same time. “You’re so beautiful, baby girl,” he murmured, husky voice ringing like beautiful music in your ears. “I love every single fucking part of you. My angel.” You hummed happily as he gave each breast one more loving kiss before slowly trailing his fingers up over your thigh. A whine left your open lips as broad digits roamed your wet folds, your core practically pounding from desperation.
“You want my fingers, my pretty girl? How do you ask nicely?” You bit your lip, desperately rolling your hips. “P-please, Chris. Please, I need your fingers, I-I want to cum…!” Your devious husband chuckled as his tongue ran across his lips. “What a good girl. Your wish is my command, baby.” He began rubbing you harder before pushing one finger inside, slowly pumping eliciting a long moan from your throat. “Chris…..” You arched your back as he returned his head to your neck, licking at the marks he had left behind from before. “Yes, beautiful?” He pushed another finger inside, pumping both inside you at a steadier pace. “Mm, fuck. I love how tight you are, even for just my fingers. You’re so perfect, my love.” You gasped as he stretched you out, his thumb simultaneously flicking at your clit making your mewls become breathier than before. “Mm you’re getting close already, aren’t you my sweet girl?” he murmured breathlessly, grinning widely and turned on as he watched you. “Shit. You’re so hot. Cum for me, Y/N, come on baby girl…”
You let out a high pitched moan as his fingers curved to hit your g-spot, releasing as you tilted your head back with your eyes momentarily focused on the ceiling of your bedroom. You locked eyes on him again just in time to see him sucking on his fingers with a devilish glint in his blue eyes, looking at you with a mischievous yet sexy expression making you need more than just his fingers this time. “Fuck me,” you ended up blurting out, and a low rumble of a laugh sounded from deep in his throat, his hand moving down to lower his underwear. “Gladly,” he murmured, leaning down to kiss you roughly as he playfully teased your wet folds with the tip of his cock. You kissed back as fiercely as you could, already letting out muffled moans into his mouth while moving your hips upwards in a desperate attempt to get him to enter. He chuckled again, but before you could acknowledge how damn musical his laughter was, he had already thrust himself inside you, a grunt escaping his lips. “God, I love you so fucking much, baby!” he growled, leveling himself up on his hands to stare down into your eyes, his forehead lightly glistening with sweat. You moaned in delight as you swung your hips towards his own, your head tilted to one side and your eyes briefly closing from how heavenly his thick cock felt inside you. “Chris… oh, my God, Chris…! H-harder…!” you begged, and he gladly obliged, a deep groan echoing from his open mouth as he pounded into you, your entire body being rocked back and forth from the force behind each thrust. You loved how much bigger he was, how you sometimes felt like a little rag doll whether it be in his hands or underneath him like this-- you were perfectly fine with him having all the physical strength in the relationship.
He suddenly moved you onto your side, lifting one of your legs and holding it up before angling himself properly to pound into you just as hard as before-- if not harder. “Ahhh…! Chris!” you cried in pleasure, hand clenching the bedsheets while your other began groping your bouncing breasts, head tilted back close to his broad chest. “Fuck that’s good, baby!” he groaned, gripping your leg tightly and using his elbow on the bed for support as he bucked his hips aggressively, the sound of skin slapping filling the room. “I-I’m close…!” you whimpered, your tone becoming high pitched again, your body shuddering. “Mm that’s right, cum for me again, sweetheart,” he uttered through hoarse and eager breaths, burying his head in your neck to kiss and suck all over it, moving your leg so that it was draped over his body so he could bring his fingers back down to rub your clit. You were nearly screaming by the time you came, your chest heaving as you attempted to catch your breath. You felt his warmth inside you, looking down to see drips of his cum leaking from your entrance. You couldn’t deny that it was hot; after all, you were married now, and you and Chris had decided practically since dating that you wanted kids.
“Fuck. That was... so… damn good, baby.” He slowly pulled out with a sigh, playfully pulling your head to him so he could kiss your forehead gently. “I love you. So fucking much.” Lying back down, he pulled you down with him, keeping strong arms around you. “I love you too,” you murmured, still out of breath, your round breasts moving up and down as you tried to steady your racing heart. He pressed kisses all over the top of your head, humming lowly as his own bare chest rose up and down against your body.
“Doesn’t even feel like our honeymoon is over,” he said with a chuckle, recalling the past few days. You smiled, tilting your head up to lazily kiss at his jawline and chin, seeing it was the only thing you could reach. “Mm. I think being with you is always a honeymoon, babe.”

Chapter 15: A false truth
Meanwhile, Jeff lay awake in his hospital bed. He didn't even properly feel angry anymore, or sad, or..anything. He just felt numb. He was getting a hair transplant, but the doctors wouldn't be able to perform proper plastic surgery until a good year or so, so natural healing of his wounds was the only viable option. His parents hadn't visited once, so he had only the staff to keep him company. Whenever one of the nurses came to change his bandages, as was procedure, he could see the look of pity in her eyes. His burns were horrific to look at, he assumed, but not once did he ask to see his own face.
When they put him under for his hair transplant, the demon, apparently calling itself "Zalgo" when asked, had returned to that space they'd talked in before. The same dark corner, red swelling around Zalgo's presence like a plague. Last time Jeff was here with the demon, he took it's hand and pledged bloodshed upon the world..but now he was second-guessing his decision.
"...How do you know Liu hates me, Zal? I mean..he could be in therapy, for all I know! He doesn't hate me, he can't..I'm his brother.."
"He sure is getting therapy.."
Zalgo reached toward one of the walls and swiped over it, opening a sort of..one way window to the sight of Liu and Natalie, gazing at the stars together, Nat running her fingers through Liu's hair as he curled up in her arms like a cat.
"He's forgotten about you, Jeff..remarkably quickly. Another thing.."
Jeff then saw into earlier in the day. Liu was talking to Randy, the kid that set him on fire, and apologized to him. Did it all mean nothing to him...? Did all the times they helped each other, the bond they had, the fact that his brother was rotting in a hospital and was going to be for a year mean nothing to him?
"A reminder, Jeffrey..he's doing this on purpose. They all do, all the couples at school that see a lonesome soul like you with nobody to go to prom with, your family that irrationally hates everything you do and paints you as a monster, the police who arrested you, mocked you for your disorder, they think it's funny. This world hates people like you, and it won't stop beating you down until you're dead."
Chapter 16: Fresh meat
Keith smirked as he saw the new girl with the black-and-red stockings pass him by in the locker. Nina Hopkins, another transfer from 9th grade. She was what you would call the "alt-girl", and if the rumors were true, had similar issues that Jeff kid had. Keith taps his friend Troy's shoulder, and the two follow her as she heads outside to eat her lunch.
"Hey! Where ya goin', anorexic?"
Nina turned to look at the boys who followed her outside, sighing as she ignored them and muttered to herself.
"Same shit as before.."
"What is it, Jeff? You finally got that sex change?"
"Jeff? who's Jeff?"
"Oh, right, that's your 'dead name'. Sorry, nInA!"
Randy saw the two outside, approaching and looking at the situation. At this point, Troy and Keith were hardly people he wanted to associate with anymore. He didn't want to bully people anymore, to hurt anyone else with these two dopes.
"C'mon, you two. We've got bigger fish to fry."
"What? We're just..introducing her to the neighborhood."
"We're going."
"You her boyfriend or something?"
Randy approached Keith, looming over the ginger with a subdued anger in his eyes.
"Maybe I should beat your fucking ass, Keith. Teach you your fair share of respect."
When his "friend" stepped back in surprise and fear, Ellsworth couldn't help but feel just a little bit satisfied with himself. Damn, that felt good.
"Alright, I'm coming..Jesus."
When the three left, Nina, who was just..caught up in all of this, looked on in confusion as she took a bite out of her sandwich.
"Sheesh..who is this Jeff kid, anyway? Heh, maybe I could buy some drugs or something off of him."
She joked to herself, the rest of school carrying on without incident.
Chapter 17: Breaking away
It was the same walk home as usual. The same cool air, the same autumn leaves flowing through the wind, the same desolate suburbia that New Orleans had become. Liu passed the Wallace Street sign that signaled the closeness of his house, his hands interlocked with Natalie's. He was about to cross the train tracks, but then he heard a familiar voice behind him.
"Liu fuckin' Woods. How the hell've you been, little man?"
Keith Winchester. Alone. With a baseball bat.
"This is the same street your brother attacked me on. Poetic, ain't it?"
Liu felt that he wasn't gonna get out of this without violence, but he didn't expect this kid, who from what he remembered hearing, had a pretty cushy life, was going to try and attack him and Nat, of all people with a baseball bat. It was metal, too, so he had to have gotten it from his dad or something. Natalie was more annoyed than frightened, however, and began walking toward the bully.
"Oh, you think you're-"
What came next horrified Liu; the awful sound of aluminum striking flesh full force rang out as Keith bashed her upside the head with his weapon. Liu's conscious quickly gave way to let Sully in, and he charged at Keith, who raised the bat above his head to strike Liu down as well, but a hard punch to the gut quickly doubled the boy over. Sully quickly followed up by grabbing Keith's ears and headbutting him, knocking him to thee ground in a daze. Liu felt like he was outside of his own body, just..watching it all unfold. Sully grabbed the baseball bat and struck Keith in the ribs, then again in the shoulder, again to his ribs. A strike to his ankle came next, causing Keith to cry out in pain louder than before. Sully then heard the loud bells of a train arriving and grabbed Keith's leg, grabbing him and then throwing him down against the tracks, placing a foot against his back so he couldn't escape. The train grew closer and closer, the panic of the situation began slowly rushing back to Liu, as Natalie's voice called out to him;
"LIU, NO!!"
Suddenly, Liu regained control, and before the train could kill Keith, he pulled him out of the way of the speeding train, the shock on his face mirroring his. Keith limped away as Natalie rushed over to Liu's side.
"Liu, what the hell was that?! You nearly killed him!"
"I-I don't know, I just..s-snapped!"
"...I've never seen you that..angry, before..that scared me, Liu. It's like..you were a different person."
"I...I guess it was.."
"C'mon, I'll be fine. He hits hard, goddamn it..you got an ice pack or something?"
Liu grabbed an ice pack from his backpack and gently pressed it up to his girlfriend's face, half of him internally cursing himself for not killing that Keith motherfucker for hitting Natalie, and the other just happy that this whole event was over and done with.
3 days passed, and Keith hadn't gotten any better. He could tell Randy was about to split, and Troy..Troy was as dopey as he usually was, that relentless apathy toward all the cruelty and the violence, it was disturbing at times. Still, Keith had agreed to drive the three out to this junkyard he frequented, helped him separate from the outside world. They'd decided that a couple of good-for-nothing cars in an abandoned junkyard would be the perfect tourniquets for their frustrations, and Keith's father played lots of baseball, so they had weapons to use in such..venting. Troy and Randy were having a fair bit of fun there, making crude jokes and smashing old cars to pieces, but Keith was busy letting out all of the frustration, the anger he had for the Woods brothers and what they'd done to him. The car he was smashing apart was nearly about to collapse on it's own as Winchester screamed curse word after curse word, striking the derelict with hit after hit. Once he was finished, he noticed the two other teenagers looking at him. Troy looked amazed at what his friend did, whilst Randy just seemed...concerned.
"Are..are you alright, dude?"
"No, I'm not alright!! Jeff, Liu, those two fucks have been on my mind ever since the shit with the forest happened! Everybody thinks I'm a fucking weakling, thanks to those two! Well, news flash, I am NOT a weakling!!"
"Keith, we'll get those two eventually, alright? They've hurt you, and that means they hurt all of us. Nobody hurts us."
"Right..they're the bigger fish you mentioned when you pussied out over that Nina girl, right?"
"I didn't pussy out, Keith! We need to get after those shitters and not after some weird 17 year old!"
"You..You lie through your teeth, don't you?"
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"You left your journal in my car, Randall. I decided to pore through it, and what do I find? Page after page of you whining about us, saying you want me and Troy gone from your life! We were friends!"
"People change, Keith, and I changed. A-After that fire, I realized that it was wrong..all of it was wrong! This bullying shit, it isn't okay! We're making other people feel like shit for our own enjoyment, that's sick!"
Randy let out an exasperated sigh as he sat on the roof of a car, clasping his hands together as he searched for the sort of words he thought could properly express how he's changed. Maybe his story would..resonate with Keith. Troy let out a small chuckle as he laid on a car hood and watched the drama unfold.
"I've never been the best with expressing myself, Keith. People would get mad at me when I said some shit that pissed them off, I didn't have a goddamn clue as to how I was supposed to talk to people. That's why I started all of this, why I started bullying people. People didn't really like me, but it was for a reason I could understand for once! But, now..after I lit Jeff on fire, it just doesn't seem worth it anymore."
"Oh, that's why?! You can't fucking talk right?! Randy, I've gotten arrested for you, you know that?! I took the fall for you for those vandalism charges when we set that old shed on fire, and was because you apparently had a fucking speech impediment."
"Keith, calm down-"
"SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!"
Randy just shook his head as Keith stormed away, snatching his baseball bat out of Randy's hands. Troy soon got up and followed, looking Ellsworth dead in the eyes as he passed him.
"You suck some off, y'know that?"
"And you swallow, prick."
Once Keith and Troy left, Randy smiled to himself, something he hadn't done ever since the incident. It was like a giant weight had been lifted from his chest, so after taking in the bliss of being free of those two, he stood up and began heading home. He'd finally broken away from those two.

So on Tuesday, we had a patient who’d come to the hospital (a Boston hospital, but smaller and less equipped than its larger cousins) with a complaint of dizziness for the past two weeks.  It turned out that he had a heart rate of less than 40 (average for an adult human is 60 - 100 beats per minute), due to something called a heart block (3rd degree).  Heart blocks, which come in multiple degrees of severity, are basically a disruption of the electrical current through the heart.  They occur due to damage to the heart muscle, often from a heart attack.  While the patient had no heart attack on his record, it’s possible to have a heart attack, recover, and not know it.  But anyway, the solution to this electrical problem is more electricity.  People with heart blocks get pacemakers, which make sure the heart beats at a certain set rate by replacing the heart’s internal electrical signals.  Pacemakers and internal defibrillators are very cool, and keep people from dying.
But Badger, what do you do when people are bradycardic but don’t have a pacemaker yet?  Well, in people where it’s a chemical problem, we can give them a medication called atropine (which was first derived from the belladonna plant!), but when it’s a mechanical problem, they can be transcutaneously, or externally, paced.  Generally, this is reserved for when the patient is showing signs of poor perfusion - altered mental status, hypotension, etc - because it has its own potential issues including being, um, painful.  So I’m told.
External pacing is done by placing debrillator pads, connected to a cardiac monitor, on the patient, setting the desired rate (usually 70bpm), setting the milliamps, and increasing the electrical dosing until mechanical capture - the patient’s heart is beating at a regular rate that adequately perfuses the body’s tissues.  Our patient, being alert, oriented, and not hypotensive, was sort of a borderline candidate for pacing.  I did consider it, and I set him up on pads in case I needed to do it in the ten minutes it would take to get to the bigger hospital with the cath lab and the cardiac surgeons.  This is absolutely something a paramedic should do in this case, because you don’t want to waste precious seconds getting out the pads if your patient’s status goes pear-shaped.
All of this is background to my main complaint: there are multiple different manufacturers of AEDs and cardiac monitors/defibrillators, as well as multiple different models of each, and the brands are not compatible.  That is, I can’t plug my Zoll pads into a Phillips monitor/defibrillator, or vice versa, and neither will be compatible with a LifePak.  There are adapters that exist, but they are aftermarket and/or expensive - particularly expensive if you have to equip your entire medic fleet or at least your IFT trucks with adapters for each machine.
(side note: I’m also writing this post to avoid my schoolwork)
Is this a big problem?  Yes and no.  Is your patient generally stable enough on a transfer that it won’t be a huge deal to take a few seconds to swap the pads?  Well, yes.  (However, as you can imagine, whipping off two hand-sized, ultra-adhesive pads from someone’s torso is really uncomfortable for the patient, think ripping off two GIGANTIC BANDAIDS).  However, as stable as my man here is, there is, as noted, the high, high potential for a patient like this to decline abruptly.  In fact, as we were wheeling him into the exam room at the real hospital, he turned to me, very distressed all of a sudden, and said “I’m having trouble breathing.”  I may or may not have spoken VERY abruptly to the doctor (who I thought was a nurse because how many of you have ever seen a doctor in a hospital? no? yes? really?) because hey this is a change in patient status and A POSSIBLE BAD SIGN FOLKS.  I wanted the hospital’s pads on him like *now*, right now, because guess what?  MY PADS ARE NOT COMPATIBLE.  I can’t just wheel the code cart in and plug and play my heart block patient.  It’s just ridiculous.  Why can’t they be compatible?  Corporate nonsense.

Official overview: Portland detective Nick Burkhardt, descended from a long line of warriors known as Grimms, defends his city from magical creatures known as Wesen, which are part human and part animal. Fighting alongside his partner, Hank, colleague Sergeant Wu and friends Monroe and Rosalee, Nick faces off against internal and external forces, including his police captain, Sean Renard.
My overview: Portland detective Nick Burkhardt thinks he's going insane when he randomly starts seeing monsters at the time his aunt goes into a coma. Turns out he's not, in fact, going crazy. He deals with shit trying to kill him and his girlfriend and friends CONSTANTLY and in reality all he wants to do his keep his city safe, and he accidentally saves the world in the process.
Thoughts on the show: I love it, it does have a habit of setting up for recurring characters and then never mentioning them again, so that's annoying. There are 6 seasons. There are some great romances in the show, and also some iffy ones, but the iffy ones are definitely regarded as such in the show, and eventually either develop past the weird stage or die before anymore harm can be done. Aired from 2011 to 2017
Thoughts on the fandom: Wayyyy too small, I know of 0 people around my age who like it, and 90% of the fan base is obsessed with Sasha Roiz who plays Sean Renard (not that I'm judging). Definitely not enough fics out there, and the ones that I've found seem to be poorly written or basically just pwp.
Warehouse 13
Platform: Amazon Prime
Official overview: Following an abrupt transfer, Secret Service agents Pete Lattimer and Myka Bering find themselves in the middle of South Dakota at a massive, top-secret storage warehouse that holds every strange artifact, mysterious relic, out-of-this-world object and supernatural souvenir ever found by the U.S. government. Lattimer and Bering's new task, as directed by the warehouse's caretaker, longtime agent Artie Nielsen, is to investigate reports of unexplainable and paranormal activity in an effort to secure more peculiar and dangerous objects, and to help Artie manage the warehouse itself.
My overview: imagine the TARDIS except it's a warehouse and not a police box (bigger on the inside) and it's full of cursed objects to be kept there so it doesn't destroy the world.
Thoughts on the show: I love it. It accurately depicts trauma and has decent representation such as a black woman everyone is intimidated by because she's the boss, a gay man who isn't sexualized and has development and a personality other than "gay". There is even an incredibly homoerotic friendship between two women that the actress of said women played up because they wanted their characters together, even if one turned out to be not-so-good. The show deals with sexism and victims of neglect. You'll learn a lot of random history while watching the show as all of the artifacts tend to be historically based (the guillotine blade that cut of Marie Antoinette's head, for instance). There are 5 seasons and I'm s3 or 4. Apparently the show does something weird with Pete and Myka at the end, which probably means they get together. Ran 2009 to 2014.
Thoughts on the fandom: again, way too small, although a lot bigger than Grimm. There are quite a few fics out there, mainly for the two women which I ship with my whole heart. There might be some controversy with Eddie McClintock (Pete Lattimer) but I'm not very well-versed in it. I wish Grimm's fandom was as big as W13's.
The Umbrella Academy
Platform: Netflix
Official overview: On one day in 1989, 43 infants are inexplicably born to random, unconnected women who showed no signs of pregnancy the day before. Seven are adopted by billionaire industrialist Sir Reginald Hargreeves, who creates the Umbrella Academy and prepares his "children" to save the world. In their teenage years, though, the family fractures and the team disbands. Fast forward to the present time, when the six surviving members of the clan reunite upon the news of Hargreeves' passing. They work together to solve a mystery surrounding their father's death, but divergent personalities and abilities again pull the estranged family apart, and a global apocalypse is another imminent threat. The series is based on a collection of comics and graphic novels created and written by My Chemical Romance lead singer Gerard Way.
My overview: adult survivors of abuse with increasingly weird/out-there superpowers due to the weird circumstances of their birth come together to celebrate *cough* I mean mourn the passing of their "father" And accidentally cause the apocalypse.
Thoughts on the show: I love it. I've finished season 2,currenfly there are only 2 seasons, it's still in progress, I love it. I'm sure most of you have already watched it because what is the supernatural fandom if not emo? Also a good one for representation. Mexican man with a stutter, black woman with a daughter she is in a custody battle for, gay druggie veteran, Ellen Page, Asian ghost boy, 58 year old man in a 13 year old's body, and a half-chimp man.
Thoughts on the fandom: big. Big big big. Haven't found any fics that cater to my specific wants in a fic, but there are fics. Some of them have weird pairings, but since the show made two (adopted) siblings canon, I can't exactly blame them.
Lost Girl
Platform: I actually have no idea
Official overview: Bo is a small-town girl on the run after a disastrous sexual encounter with her boyfriend ends with his death. Bo learns that she is not human, but a succubus, who feeds on the sexual energy of humans. She and her kind are members of the Fae, creatures of legend, who walk among humans and feed off them in different ways. As she searches for the truth about her origins and runs from her inhuman urges, she vows to help those she meets along the way -- human or Fae -- who need to right a wrong.
My overview: bisexual woman finds out she's a succubus and she has to choose to be either good Fae or bad Fae (I think it's light vs dark but it's been a Hot Minute) she has a thing with a werewolf and also a thing with a Fae doctor who is human and a woman.
Thoughts on the show: it's good, 5 seasons, don't think I've finished the first season. Back when I started watching it it was on Netflix and has since been removed. It's on Vudo but it costs money which is bullshit. It's a little weird at first, but I like it. Ran 2010 to 2015.
Thoughts on the fandom: have not interacted with the fandom for fear of spoilers. I'd imagine this show's fandom is about the size of Grimm.
Being Human (USA version)
Platform: again, I don't know.
Official overview: "Being Human," based on a BBC series of the same name, features three 20-something roommates who each try to keep a secret from the rest of the world -- one is a ghost, another is a vampire and the third is a werewolf. The three roomies try to help one another navigate the complexities of living double lives.
My overview: again, weird starts off in almost the middle of the story. It deals with abuse, death, fighting urges, dealing with past sins, and, well, being human. The characters are Sally (Ghost) Aidan (vampire) and Josh (werewolf). The three of them are trying to live like normal, Aidan and Josh as workers at the local hospital as Sally works to deal with her death.
Thoughts on the show: I love it I just wish I could find it on a reliable site, again, it's on Vudo but it costs money. It definitely had the set up for a good mlm relationship but from what I've gathered they end up forcing heterosexuality.
Thoughts on the fandom: again, too small, roughly the size of Grimm. I have seen 0 fics.
The Librarians
Platform: Hulu I do so believe
Official overview: Cued by TNT's popular 'The Librarian' trilogy, this series introduces new members of an ancient group protecting mystical artefacts. Hidden below the Metropolitan Public Library, the secret society's longtime leader is Flynn Carsen, whose job has become very complicated. To help, the Library recruits Eve, a counterterrorism agent responsible for organizational security; Jacob, who has encyclopedic knowledge of art, architecture and history; Cassandra, who links auditory/sensory hallucinations to memory; and Ezekiel, a skilled thief and master technician. Overseeing them is Jenkins, the reclusive caretaker of the Library's sleepy little outpost in Oregon. Noah Wyle executive produces and recurs as Flynn, the role he played in the movie series.
My overview: very similar to W13. This time imagine the Bunker, and the Warehouse, and boom, you've got the Library.
Thoughts on the show: good! I love it, I just found out it was on Hulu and am going to be binging it as soon as I finish Grimm and Warehouse. I'd love to see a crossover between W13 and The Librarians I feel like they'd have a feud.
Thoughts on the fandom: probably the same size as W13 if not bigger as the series came from movies. Again, haven't finished the series so I haven't interacted with the fandom.
Eureka
Platform: Amazon Prime
Official overview: In the years since World War II, the U.S. government has been relocating the world's geniuses (and their families) to the Pacific Northwest town of Eureka. Daily life there shifts between amazing innovation and total chaos. U.S. Marshal Jack Carter learns this first-hand when his car breaks down in Eureka, stranding him among the town's eccentric citizens. When they unleash a scientific creation still unknown to the outside world, it's up to Carter to restore order. Subsequently, he's let in on one of America's best-kept secrets.
My overview: a small town but make every person a genius. Has some crossover with Warehouse 13, they exist in the same universe.
Thoughts on the show: I love it so far. Just the kind of weird shit I enjoy.
Thoughts on the fandom: I'd imagine about the size of Warehouse 13's but I've yet to interact considering I'm still in season 1.

The Mind’s Power Over the Body
Part 9: Explanation
Story summary: They only ever had each other. It had been that way since high school, ever since Elianna transferred to dreary Arlen and took Jonathan under her wing. They go separate ways for college, and when they're reunited at Arkham Asylum professionally, Elianna comes to find that they've both changed during their time separated. Can she look past the promise of danger and stay by Jonathan's side as they slide further and further into the darkness while she grapples to come to terms with the truth about herself? Can she accept what needs to be done in order to hold onto the only person who holds any meaning in her life? This is a very self-indulgent AU that draws from several different canons of the DCU and ignoring others, starting in the Batman Begins Nolanverse. This will follow the plot of the movie, although the timeline has been very slightly tweaked.
Part One / Part Two / Part Three / Part Four / Part Five / Part Six / Part Seven / Part Eight
Word count: 2469
Between her newfound acceptance of her less-than-moral tendencies and her freshly organized office, Elianna had finally been able to find peace for the day as she finished plugging all of her notes into the computer. Cognitively she knew (and had even told several patients in the past) that seeking revenge was unhealthy and detrimental to the healing process, especially if the outcome could get the exactor arrested. But God was the prospect of it attractive.
I don't think God has anything to do with any of this.
She wrapped up the rest of her work fairly quickly, still mulling over the unethicacy of admitting patients with common phobias, finally deciding to overlook the fallacies if it meant that she wouldn't be attacked again any time soon, and gathered her purse and her suitcase before making her way to Jonathan's office after a glance over her map of the facility.
On her way, Elianna suddenly found herself wrapped in the embrace of something blonde and very shrill. "Harley?"
"I'm so sorry that I didn't check on you sooner!" El laughed and gently pried her friend off of her.
"It's okay; I'm alright." She assured with a warm smile. She barely knew Harley. How sweet of her to be so worried.
"Like hell you are, look at your forehead!" Without thinking, El lifted her hand to touch the bandaid, which was only partially covered by her hair.
"To be honest, I forgot about it. But the fact that I only needed a bandaid and not a hospital bracelet means something, I think."
"Yeah, I guess so." Harley pouted and linked her arm with Elianna's, starting to walk her in the direction she had been going before she stopped her. "I was really worried about you, y'know, and nobody expected you back today. I mean, you must be traumatized! Any signs of PTSD?"
"Not yet, but I'm trying not to dwell on it. I mean, I came here for a fresh start (not technically a lie), and as far as I'm concerned, this was just the city officially indoctrinating me as a Gothamite." Harley snorted and shook her head.
"Alright, however you want to look at it, I guess. Look, I gotta run; I just couldn't let you go without making sure you're okay. You're sure you don't need anything?"
"Not at the moment, but if I need anything, I'll keep you in mind." El stopped walking again to give the blonde a tight squeeze, which she returned readily.
"Alright, honey, say hi to Doctor Crane for me," Harley finished with a kiss on her cheek and then seemed to vanish before Elianna had a chance to say anything else.
Upon reaching Jonathan's office, she knocked and waited for him to buzz her in, and her original greeting died in her throat as she entered.
"Why do you get a bigger office than me?" She asked, looking around the space. It was still messy, just like his home office, but the chaos seemed more organized.
"Because I've worked here longer, come help me with this stack, will you?" He sighed and pushed said stack to the other side of the desk from him. El nodded and sat in front of it, taking the top file off. "Just read me the most recent notes inside, and I'll type it up." They set to work straight away, finally getting each computerized file updated after an hour or so. Jonathan stretched his back as they stood up, and El noticed that he still seemed irritated by whatever her name was from the DA's office.
"You okay? I can drive home if you want." He let out a short, humorless "ha!"
"Under no circumstances do you get to drive my car. You drive like Scarecrow."
"Wh-you let him drive but not me?" He shook his head.
"Not a chance, but he likes it when you drive, and that's enough of a deterrent for me." El rolled her eyes, but it was sound reasoning, she supposed.
"Fine, but you have to make dinner again."
"Well, the difference is that with me behind the wheel, we'll actually make it home to enjoy dinner." He replied offhandedly, snapping his briefcase closed and walking with her to the door.
"Okay, I get it, find a new joke, will you?" Her light irritation seemed to amuse him, and she muttered something about, "never should have taught you about humor," as he held open the door for her.
Once back at Jonathan's apartment, El wasted no time getting into the shower and changing into pajamas. She still had so many questions about his involvement in the underworld, and being comfortable acted as her preliminary strike against what would doubtlessly be a less than fun conversation.
When she returned to the living room, Jonathan hadn't bothered to change out of his work clothes, and it appeared that he had been trying in vain to tidy his desk the entire time. El left him to it and continued to the kitchen in search of something to snack on.
"You jealous of my clean office yet?" She called as she pilfered through his pantry. Her friend had had a weakness for goldfish ever since she had introduced them to him, as silly as it sounded. I know they're in here somewhere...aha!
"Hardly; I just misplaced something." He replied distractedly as she walked back in with the entire carton. "If you finish that, you're buying me more."
"Deal. So, why don't you put that on pause until after we talk about everything else?" El asked as she walked next to him and leaned back against the desk, and he stopped shuffling through his papers.
"Where do you want to start?" El thought for a moment before pulling him over to the couch so that they could sit and set the carton between them.
"Why don't you tell me how you...came into the life of organized crime?" She asked slowly, unsure of how to go about asking. Was that the right way to refer to the situation?
"There's a man, Ra's Al Gul," El was taken aback by the intense name—this really was very serious. "He contacted Falcone a while ago to find someone to make a compound that can help him purge Gotham. Falcone found me because of my specialty in phobias and recruited me to the cause. He assumed that I would be easily corrupted, working at Arkham and all." He reached into the carton for a handful of goldfish. "I guess he was right."
"O-okay, and that's why you developed the toxin in the first place." He nodded. "And this Ra's Al Gul character, he's the one shipping what you need into Gotham, what is it?"
"It's this little blue flower from Bhutan. It grows in the mountains. There's a natural chemical in it that reacts to being broken down that causes vivid hallucinations by hijacking the amygdala and creating a powerful fear response. He uses it for some...initiation process for his organization."
"So you studied it and found a way to work it into a serum." He nodded again, still slowly working through his handful of the little crackers, and suddenly something clicked in Elianna's brain. "My patients." He looked at her, his face impassive. "The ones with the anxiety disorders, there isn't actually anything wrong, is there? You admitted them to study the effects."
"Yes, I've been microdosing them with different strains of the toxin to study the results."
"Well, how do you keep them from ratting you out? I mean, if I'm working with some of them, then that means other doctors are too."
"I've made it clear to all of them that if they point the finger at me that I'll give them a full dosage. It's not like the administration would find any of my research if they cared to look anyway; it's all here." Elianna laughed incredulously.
"You really do have everything figured out, don't you? Sneaky bastard."
"I'm going to choose to assume that was a compliment." There was a quiet pause while El thought over everything she had learned in such a short space of time.
"Why does Ra's Al Gul want to target Gotham?" Jonathan half shrugged in response.
"Something about the corrupt elite, the thinks that by weeding it out, it can allow humanity to heal."
"He thinks he can fix humanity by taking out one lousy city?" She asked before another thought hit her. "Hold on, you're one of the corrupt elite, aren't you? That goes against his whole plan. Why are you helping him if you're in his crosshairs?" At this, Jonathan shook his head and leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees.
"I agreed to do this because if I didn't, they could find someone else to, and as long as I continue with the project, I've been promised a way out of the city safely. This has been in motion for long enough that I work directly for Ra's Al Gul now. Falcone is just involved in handling the shipments; they sneak it in with other drugs."
"Well...shit, you get to leave the city so that you don't get caught up in the...the chaos, what about me?" She had a moment of self-awareness for the selfishness of her concern, which was easily brushed off (much to her own surprise), and she did not want to get caught up in the attack on the city. Jonathan turned his head to look at her, almost offended that she had even asked.
"I'm going to take you with me. I thought that would go without saying." He shifted his whole body to face her. "Like I said this morning, I do terrible things, but I wouldn't abandon you do that any more than you would to me, especially now. I told you everything; now you're involved."
El nodded in relief. All of her questions answered, she returned to thinking about how much she should have been disturbed by the situation. Her best friend was involved in a plot to bring down an entire city, and she had been more concerned about her own safety than she had been about the innocent people living there.
Then again, why should she be worried? Everything, everyone, for her entire adult life had been just like high school in Arlen where the strong and privileged had punched downward at the weak for fun, and the weak were pushed to do bad things to get by. Was it not kinder to eliminate the city where it was all overlooked? Kinder to provide the weak with an out from subjugation with a choice that they didn't need to make? To exact revenge on their tormentors?
Really, she thought, if you think about it, the only difference between them and the two of us is that we have the chance to do something about it. So why shouldn't we?
Life in Gotham had already been so much more exciting than she had hoped for, and the promise of more in store filled her with anticipation. Why had she chosen to go so far away from Jonathan in the first place?
"Well then," she moved the carton onto the coffee table and laid across the newly empty space to put her head in her friend's lap and looked up at him. "What's the plan for Zsasz?" The littlest hint of a smile appeared on his face.
"You're looking forward to it now, aren't you?"
"He deserves it." The condemnation flew from her mouth without a second thought.
"He does, but are you sure you can do it?"
"Yes. I want to do it. And if I can't, that won't change. Even if you have to do it for me, it'll be done, and so long as one of us does it and no one else, I'll be satisfied with the outcome." Jonathan found himself feeling proud of his friend, and Scarecrow echoed the sentiment; the straw man was really starting to like her for the first time.
"Well said."
"I thought so too." El smiled at him, suddenly remembering once again her mysterious savior. "Oh!" She sat up quickly, turning to face him again. "The parking lot the other night, Zsasz; there was someone else there."
"What do you mean, there was a witness?" Elianna shook her head.
"No, it was after I fell, when I got up again and I was running to my car there was someone else there, he-" she paused to decide how to tell what had happened. "It seemed like he flew over my head, I don't know where he came from, but he went after Zsasz. I saw him for a seconds before I left, he was dressed in all black, and his face was covered. I thought that he would take care of Zsasz, but it seems like the police detained him, so I don't know what happened."
Jonathan thought for a moment, analyzing the information. "Well, even if whoever it was incapacitated Zsasz and called the police, it's unlikely that they would broadcast that on the media." EL nodded in agreement.
"I wonder what his motivation was and how he happened to be there." She spoke aloud, but more to herself than to Jonathan. "If he hadn't shown up, I don't think I would have made it."
"Well, it's definitely strange, I'll give you that." Jonathan sighed. "Something we'll have to keep an eye on. If a vigilante is gearing up to take out criminals, then we'll have to be prepared for it."
"Yeah." The apartment was silent as the pair thought over what would happen if anything they were planning on doing was discovered. "I knew Gotham would give me some excitement." She finally said lightly, to which Jonathan scoffed.
"Yeah, you could call it that. Is...there anything else you may have forgotten than you need to tell me?" El thought back for a moment, fighting a chill as she forced herself to remember anything.
"No, that's it." He nodded.
"Good."
"Yeah." They both paused for another moment before El spoke again, looking to change the subject. "Now go make dinner before I'm forced to finish your goldfish; I'm starving."
"Yes, ma'am," Jonathan stood, taking the carton back into the kitchen with him. "How do you feel about pasta tonight?"

Thank you, Supernatural
Tumblr media
I don't think a simple thank you can cover everything these boys have done for me, for many of us out there.
For lots of people, supernatural is just a show.
But for me and for lots of other people it means many more.
Let's be honest, this year sucked.
2020 for me started empty. I would wake up every morning with emptiness in me, because one person I really looked up to and loved with all my heart, my grandpa, suddenly died in front of my eyes and I couldn't do anything but watch. Even though everybody thought I bounced back from that really fast and adapted to it, it was just my very well built mask. I didn't want them to know. That maybe wasn't the right thing to do, since I for sure wasn't the only one mourning, but I just got used to throwing out masks and smiles whenever it was a bad day because they usually wouldn't understand why am I upset and would tell me to stop being a crybaby.
The fact that I lost my grandpa who was my father figure, who raised me up and was the only one who ever supported me and had my back, tore me apart. I was aware I will never go and spend summer breaks in village with him, I will never be able to watch "Only fools and horses" with him on TV.
It just couldn't settle.
And then, the Corona virus happened.
Let me be honest, school and certain people in it helped me with mourning. A lot. Being able to focus on schoolwork, studying, projects, it took my mind of for a brief time. But then, we were all of a sudden closed in our houses because of this whole situation and I didn't thought it was going to be this painful for me.
I was always thinking "Meh, I rarely went out anyways, I got used to being home" but the fact that I was back in the apartment where my grandpa died, and the fact that I woke up every morning and went to the living room to see an empty bed and a turned off TV, instead of him sitting there, reading the newspaper while waiting for a certain TV show on the TV... It didn't feel like home.
I closed in my room. Most of the days I would spend by trying to figure out everything about school, who's using what platform etc. Soon enough, my mother, a nurse in city hospital, told me that she will be transfered to work on a Covid part of it.
I didn't really think it would change anything, but hell, was I wrong.
Every day, she would come pissed from work. She would scream at me, yell at me, blame me for whatever happened in her shift, blamed me for everything that wasn't in my power.
Listening to constant hate from her never had such an impact on me. She would usually do that but grandpa would always be there and talk to me. My mom would usually go to my grandma to see her and talk to her about her troubles at work, but she couldn't risk going to her place, so she decided to obviously, yell and scream at me, thinking I don't bother because I never showed it.
She would just randomly slam the door of my room open and start telling me I'm a terrible daughter, that I don't want to do anything, that I'm useless, that people will never love me, that I'm stupid etc. Those words now started to settle down in me and started piling up. Day by day, the pile became bigger and bigger and I was in a darker place than ever before.
I didn't talk to anyone about it. I didn't want to bother and others had problems too, much bigger then this one.
I was really desperate. I needed a way to get out.
One of those days, I called one of my good friends, and asked him to tell me something that he likes to watch, or to play. I needed a run from reality and I decided to find it in a video game or a TV show.
That's where supernatural came.
April 5th, 2020.
Just when I thought this year would never get better, it did.
I tested the waters with the pilot - he told me that I would like the show since I was a fan of The X Files and Scooby-doo. He was right. It took me one episode, and Dean's famous "Dad's on a hunting trip. And he hasn't been home in a few days" to get me hooked.
Every day, I would turn on the show and would run away from reality. Every time it all became too much, I would watch them. Soon enough it felt like home. Those boys going around the country, hunting, having each other's backs, it really was unique and interesting to see how well they worked together.
As the show progressed and the boys went more mature, I started feeling better. I wouldn't have dark thoughts, I wouldn't feel empty anymore. Even though I could never talk with them in person, their presence helped me deal with my grandpa's death and my mother's sick obsession of blaming me for everything.
Sam and Dean taught me to stand up for myself. That's what I did. I stood up for myself and told my mother to stop being such a fuss and blame me for whatever happened to her on work because I'm no God (Chuck now 😂) and I'm not controlling anything. She was at first pissed when I talked back to her yelling but soon she stopped as well. I don't know where did she take out all of that anger and I honestly don't care. As long as it wasn't me, I didn't care.
Sam and Dean taught me that nobody really dies. Well, those boys never seemed to stick to that title. But the ones who did, as for example their dad, mom, later on Bobby, Jo, Ellen, Ash, Crowley, Rowena, Jack, Kevin,... You shouldn't think about how you lost them, about how you will never get to see them again. You should remember and cherish the moments you got to spend with them, and to be grateful that you were able to spend time with them. I started watching at grandpa's death from another point of view. Instead of missing him, I remembered him. Whenever I felt that feeling of empty, I would take our photo album and watch our photos together. I would read my old diary entries in which I wrote about how he took me to a fair and bought me a gigantic burger. Instead of tears, I would smile and be happy for being able to spend the time of my life with him and was grateful for making me who I am.
Sam and Dean taught me that family don't end with blood. But it doesn't start there either. I started taking better care of my friends, tried to talk to them more, ask them more often how they felt. I knew how bad I wanted someone to ask me that when I was in a bad place and I knew someone would appreciate that. But as well, I opened up more to some of them. It really felt nice, knowing that they don't care that you're broken and that they are more than ready to help you deal with whatever you need to.
I binge watched the whole show in about 4 months. I watched the boys grow up, and so did I. I learned so much from them, I loved them for who they are, I cried and laughed with them, I was scared and happy with them, I would stay up late at night just thinking about Dean and Sam and whatever they were dealing at the moment or rant to my friend who never even watched the show about how much I love Castiel for being who he is.
Also, I fell in love with the actors. Jensen, Jared, Misha, later on Mark Sheppard, Alex Calvert,... I laughed for hours when watching their panels, comic-cons and other interviews they did. I learned about the always keep fighting campaign, and much much more.
I was happy to be in this fandom.
And so, I want to thank them for giving us the opportunity to watch Sam and Dean's adventures. I want to thank Jensen, Jared and Misha for sticking with the show for years, for giving us a ticket for the most wild and exciting ride that will always be a great, bright memory in our lives.
You guys left a legacy behind, a big legacy. As long as there's us out there, you will never be forgotten. The show will never be forgotten as long as there's people to remember it and talk about it, write fanfictions about it, re-watch it, laugh about it.
The show might be ending, but what it's left behind, that never ends. This family the show has built, there is no other like this one. There's no other Fandom like ours. This fandom is much more than just a fandom. This fandom is also a place where everyone is welcome, there is no judgments, no hate. This fandom is a family. A legacy. Not much shows can say that they've left a legacy behind. Right?
As much as I am sad the show's ending, I'm happy it happened. I'm happy I got to see 15 seasons of it, knowing many shows don't make it past 10. I'm happy I got to see Team Free Will kicking names and taking asses.
So, don't cry because it's over. Smile, because it happened. Part of a journey is the end, but then, nothing really ends.
Carry on... ❤️

Rise Up
Ch.4: A New Firestorm
Previous Story: It Had To Be You || Current Masterlist
Pairings: Barry Allen x Female OC
Chapter Summary: The Snarts have made their way back to STAR Labs only this time they're in need of help.
Pronunciation of OC: Bell-en. The last syllable has an emphasis so it’s not pronounced like ‘Helen’ would be.

Despite the team's best efforts, professor Stein was still under heavy health risks.
"Hold him steady!" Cisco shouted at Caitlin and Barry who were frantically trying to keep Stein's convulsing body still enough for Cisco to come in with a device similar to the Firestorm splicer. It was just hard to do when Stein kept spontaneously blowing blue flames.
"He's dropping out!" Caitlin anxiously said.
Cisco had managed to get in and put the splicer on Stein's chest, but his fingers fumbled trying to get it activated. "Come on, come on, come on, come on!"
"Cisco, we're losing him!"
But just then Cisco heard the splicer make a 'click!' and pulled back with a heavy sigh of relief. "Oh, Díos mío. Thank God."
"He's getting worse," Barry sighed and stared at the now unconscious Stein. It had been a cycle like this all night and they still had no real ideas on how to stabilize him permanently.
"Look, I did what I could to re-engineer Doctor Wells' original stabilizer to quell the reaction, but I don't know what he used as a power source," Cisco started out the side room. "Best I could find was the one from his wheelchair."
"And how long will that last?" Caitlin wondered as she and Barry followed him out.
"Well, that's the problem, we had already used up most of its energy trying to dampen the metas' powers during our little rogue air trip with Weather Wizard and company. I think we got a few days tops."
"And he's stuck in bed?"
"Yeah, when he wakes up, I'm gonna transfer the stabilizer to this, give him a power cane, get him moving," Cisco moved over to a table to pick up another silver device.
Barry knew that was only a temporary situation and sooner or later Stein would be in trouble yet again. "We gotta figure out a way to save him."
"I think I might know how to do that," Caitlin decided to share her spontaneous idea with them. She headed for the main desk and pulled up Stein's profile up on one of the computers across them. "When the Particle Accelerator exploded, the dark matter that collided with Professor Stein fused with the Firestorm matrix and altered the normal molecular processes that occurs within his body. Those highly reactive molecules needed something to bond with in order to stabilize. But now that Ronnie is no longer a part of Professor Stein-"
"Those molecules don't have anything to bond to," Barry realized the problem.
"And the longer he goes without merging, the more unstable he becomes."
"Ugh," Cisco foresaw a much bigger problem of finding Stein a new replacement. "All right, so, what do we do?"
"We find another... participant."
Cisco shot Caitlin a sarcastic look. "Okay, cool, so, how do we do that? Are we just gonna make a Tinder app for potential meta-humans? 'Cause I'm pretty sure merging with Stein and randomly bursting into flames sounds like the biggest "swipe left" of all time."
Barry disapproved of Cisco's lack of seriousness but did have to agree that it wouldn't such an easy thing finding someone willing to become Firestorm. "I mean, even if we could find someone willing, Stein can't just merge with whoever he wants."
"No he can't, but I have done some research, and found two potential candidates that might be compatible with him," Caitlin typed on the computer to bring up two young men's profiles. "They both were affected by the dark matter, and they were both admitted to the hospital showing symptoms of gene rearrangement mutation. And they both share the same blood type as Professor Stein and Ronnie."
"All right. I mean, this is more than organ donation," Barry felt the need to remind her. "We'll need more than tissue typing to see if their bodies are compatible."
"If I can isolate the genetic locus of the two candidates and cross-reference it with the mutations in Professor Stein, I might be able to find a match and save his life."
"What do you need to do that?"
Caitlin formed an apologetic smile, indicating she would definitely be requiring his speedy abilities.

Belén was uncomfortable. She didn't need to say it: her body outright showed it. From the way she awkwardly sat on the metal chair, to the way her hand reached for the prison phone...everything screamed "I don't know what to do here".
Luckily, Maritza had assumed the reason her sister came to visit. "I'm glad that you and Mom are salvaging the only family relationship left in this...wonky family of ours. I know that with time you'll be close, like it should've been from the start."
Belén gave a low sigh of doubt. As much as she wanted that closeness with her mother, she was aware that it wouldn't happen overnight and that it certainly wouldn't be easy. She told Maritza that and added her biggest fear: "I can't even be completely honest with her."
Maritza knew she was talking about Belén's double life as a metahuman. "Maybe it's better that she doesn't know."
Belén shrugged and looked to the side in thought. "Despite everything that's happened between us Maritza...I just want to say..." There was a clear struggle for her to say it out loud but she knew Maritza did deserve it this time. "...thank you."
Maritza blinked in surprise since she hadn't been expecting that. In fact, she hadn't been expecting any form of gratitude from Belén anytime soon - maybe not even in this lifetime after what she did. "Belén..."
"You did a lot of bad things Maritza but this was something nice..." Belén drew in a breath, "So...thanks. It's better to be friends with my mother than enemies. At least this way I get to see Axel and...he's good. Better, now, actually, since he's living with his grandmother now."
"I'm happy to hear that you're doing better now," Maritza offered a smile that Belén couldn't return. "I saw one of the newspapers with your article in it."
Belén blinked and stared at her sister with curiosity. Her article about the Azalea being alive had finally been published and was so far doing well with the public's response. They were eager and hopeful that their beloved Azalea was still alive. Belén just never expected for her sister to be one of the readers. "You read my articles?"
Maritza smiled again. "Of course I do. You're a hell of a writer and the fact you're making a comeback to the city is amazing. I'm glad that you're doing better, Belén. You deserve that. You deserve...everything."
And just like before coming, Belén didn't know what to do.

Barry intended on getting back to STAR Labs as quick as possible after he finished a bit of work at the station. If he continued to make unscheduled leaves then someone would definitely start to notice and that would be the last thing he needed at the moment. He hurried down the stairs with a needed case file in his hands, and in his rush to get to Joe, he bumped into a tall woman who then dropped her purse.
"I-I am so sorry!" Barry went to pick up the purse off the floor. When he looked up to see the woman he was met with familiar-looking brown eyes.
"That's fine," Veronica Green took back her purse with a polite smile. "I wasn't looking where I was going either." In his surprise, Barry couldn't say anything. Veronica tilted her head to examine the young man. "I know you, don't I? I've seen you…"
"Th-the...funeral," Barry stuttered to explain and seeing Veronica's confused gaze he shook his head and began anew. "I'm Barry Allen-" he stuck a hand to shake with hers.
"Oh, right," Veronica shook his hand politely. "You were my daughter's boyfriend."
"Well, not 'was'...am…" Barry watched her awkwardly process that news and wondered if the woman was about to hate him or mildly tolerate him. She didn't appear too friendly at the moment.
"Oh," was all that came out from Veronica's lips.
She hates me, Barry concluded.
"Barry? Hey!" he then heard Patty call for him and thanked every God he knew of for the distraction. It was incredibly awkward - even for his usual.
Patty came rushing up to him and Veronica, smiling widely. "You'll never guess what I found." But before Barry could even begin to guess she held up a plastic bag of teeth.
"Are those...teeth?" Barry made a face.
"Shark teeth," Patty excitedly corrected. "And I have an eyewitness that says he saw a shark walking on land-a man-shark."
"Man-shark?" this time Veronica had spoken up, letting Patty realize she had yet to know who the other woman was. "This city has man-sharks?" Veronica looked at Barry like he had the answers.
"I'm sorry, who are you?" Patty inquired.
"Veronica Green," Veronica reached to shake Patty's hand. "I'm transferring from Star City."
"Oh, nice," Patty smiled as she shook the woman's hand. "Patty Spivot. I just started working here too."
"Right, I know. And I'm assuming you're working on...what are they called again? Metahumans?" Veronica's face said it all. It was an absolutely not. The things she was doing for her daughter she could not believe.
"Well…" Patty said after Veronica took an abrupt leave, "...she seems like a cheery one."
"That's actually Belén's mother," Barry watched Veronica head for Singh's office.
"Oh my God," Patty put a hand over her mouth.
"Don't worry, I think Belén knows that too."
Patty glanced at him, surprised by his statement.
Barry winced. "Don't...tell her I said that, actually."
"Only if you don't tell her what I said."
"Deal."
The two smiled at each other.
"So, um...do you think that's actually real?" Barry one again looked at the bag of teeth. He had heard and seen of all sorts of metahumans but a shark that walked on land seemed just a bit too much.
"Yeah, I mean, I know it sounds really wacko...but, I mean, nothing seems impossible now that we have meta-humans, right? And I thought it would be fun, you know, for us to work together again on a case."
"Yeah, I mean, I really- I'd love to work on anything with you. Um, it's just, you know, meta-humans aren't really my thing," Barry tried looking as convincing as ever. He didn't want Patty looking too much into the metahuman criminals lest she be kidnapped again.
"Really? I mean...I can handle it myself…"
Then again, if she was going to keep looking into it herself, alone, Barry would rather have an eye on her upclose. "No, you-look, how about I just- I'll run a test, see where the teeth came from."
Patty beamed. "That would be amazing! Thank you!" she handed the bag over to him.
Joe walked out of the office room and saw the bag of shark teeth. "How's your man-shark case coming?" he looked at Patty, amused.
"It's good. I was just gonna go and canvas the area, see what else I can dig up, and Barry here agreed to run some tests for me."
"Really?" Joe raised an eyebrow and looked over to Barry.
"Mm-hmm. So, progress," Patty beamed and said another 'thanks' to Barry before leaving herself.
"For real?" Joe inquired from Barry, eyes trained on the bag of teeth.
"If it's another meta I'd rather know first and lead Patty away from it before something like Sand Demon happens again," Barry explained.
"Mm," Joe walked over to the reception desk to leave behind some papers and then started back for his office.
"Uh, so did you hear we have a new co-worker?" Barry followed after him and glanced at Singh's office where he could see Veronica having an idle chat with him.
Joe followed his gaze to the office and nodded. "Wasn't expecting that from one phone call, I'll tell you that."
"Yeah I don't think she likes me very much…" Barry let his file flop on Joe's desk.
Joe started to laugh. "What parent likes their daughter's boyfriend?"
"Thanks," Barry said with a straight face. To his dismay, Joe only continued to laugh more. He felt his phone vibrating in his pocket and pulled it up to see who it was. "Hey, you know what, I gotta go. It's Cisco. It's about Professor Stein."
"Okay, go, I'll cover you with Singh," Joe shooed him off and just as Barry turned to leave he heard the man laugh again.
It was not funny.

In the cortex, Stein tried out his new makeshift silver cane that was meant to keep him stabilized in the meantime they found a possible firestorm partner. "Well, I must admit, I never imagined the Sphinx's riddle about a man requiring three legs would ever apply to me, but if this device keeps me mobile, then I will gratefully oblige."
Caitlin smiled at the man as he took a small trip in the cortex to test out the cane. "Hopefully, you won't need it for much longer," she gestured to the two profiles of the candidates that could possibly (and hopefully) work to save him. "There was no agglutination in the blood samples, and cross-matching was negative for both, and it appears that the dark matter from the Particle Accelerator explosion mutated their genes in a very similar way it did to yours. I think they're both potential matches."
"So who do we go with?" Belén looked at the two men on the computer screen. She could see one was far younger than the other but as far as she could tell they both matched Stein. "Do we pull popsicle sticks or…?"
Caitlin chuckled and shook her head. "My first choice is Henry Hewitt. He graduated summa cum laude from Hudson University with a double major in Applied Physics and Bioengineering."
"A Hudson boy," Stein said thoughtfully. "I like him already."
"What about this other guy, Jefferson Jackson?" Barry moved up to the computer to take a closer look. "High school quarterback, 4.0 student. He's got the physical attributes. And it looks like more of his alleles match than Hewitt's. Doesn't that mean that he's more compatible?"
Caitlin reluctantly agreed but it was easy to see that she really did prefer Henry. "On paper, perhaps, but Hewitt is a scientist. Clearly, he's trying to make something of his life."
"That's a bit mean to say," Belén sarcastically glanced at Caitlin as if she were scolding the brunette.
"I'm just...I think he'd be open to something like this," Caitlin raised her hands in defense.
"I think we should meet with both of them before we make a decision," Cisco muttered, thinking both candidates would probably have to think about it really hard before being able to come up with a decision.
"That's an excellent idea," Stein agreed.
"I'll see if I can get Hewitt here," Caitlin said fast.
"All right, in the meantime, we'll go meet with Jefferson Jackson," Barry turned back, looking at Belén and Stein for agreement.
"I have to go pick up Axel and bring him to Mrs. Andrews," Belén patted him on the arm.
"Hey, that reminds me," Barry walked up to her while the others dispersed to do their tasks, "I met your mother today at the station."
"Oh yeah," Belén smiled. "She said she started on that transfer thing."
"Um...yeah, it's just…" Barry hated to be the one to tell her because she really did look happy about it, "...I kinda got the feeling she wasn't very happy that we were back together again."
Belén's smile faded a bit as she considered the idea that perhaps never telling her mother they were alright now could've had a bigger influence than she thought. "Oh, oh I'm sorry Barry. You know, that's probably my fault. Last time she heard you were the jerk that broke up with me."
But Barry wanted to say that he felt it was a bit more than just that. There was something about the way Veronica had looked at him earlier that...sort of said she couldn't believe her daughter had chosen him.
"Barry, do not worry," Belén assured him it would be fine. She set her hands on his arms and looked so sure of herself, it made Barry dread the outcome if things didn't go her way. "My Mom's a grumpy woman but she's going to try and make things work with me. Once she gets to know you - and knows how happy you make me - she'll warm up to you."
"You think?" Barry raised an eyebrow at her.
"Absolutely," Belén chuckled and leaned in to kiss him. "It'll be fine."
"Okay," Barry relented very quietly. He didn't realize how much it would bother him if Veronica ended up truly not liking him. There was something he'd been meaning to tell Belén but so far was unable to find a suitable moment and place.
Belén mistook his silence as more worry and laughed. She repeated that it would all be fine, gave him a last kiss before truly leaving. On her way out, she missed their newest E-2 visitor lurking behind.

Axel bounced on his feet while he waited for his aunt Belén to buy him that ice cream from the ice cream truck. It was his reward for getting a sticker at school that indicated he'd attempted to write his name unlike other students.
"But you know that you won't get a reward every time, right?" Belén asked after giving Axel his Bugs Bunny popsicle. "I'm happy that you're putting an effort but you don't get a reward every time."
"Mhm!" Axel practically waved her off while he licked his popsicle.
Belén playfully rolled her eyes and ushered him towards the car. While she was putting Axel into the backseat, she could've sworn she felt burning eyes on her back. She hurriedly finished adjusting Axel's seat belt then closed the car door. As she moved for the driver's seat she made a diligent look around for anything strange but as far as she could see there were only students being picked up.
Get it together Belén, she berated herself and opened the driver's door.
She missed the brunette women across the street peering behind another ice cream truck. A dark smile spread across her face as she watched Belén drive off. "Gotcha."

When Belén returned to STAR Labs, she found Caitlin in a side room excitedly conversing with one of the chosen candidates for Firestorm. Cisco was sitting at the desk with a grim face at the two.
"What's going on?" Belén dropped in the chair next to him.
"Caitlin got Henry Hewitt to come," Cisco said but sounded nowhere near happy about it.
"What's wrong with him?" Belén asked quick, garnering a confused look from Cisco. "I know you hate him. It's in your voice, stupid."
Cisco smiled and shook his head. Before he got to explaining his reason of dislike for Henry, Barry and professor Stein walked into the room. Seeing them from the side room, Caitlin brought out Henry to meet them.
"Caitlin, what's going on?" Barry frowned at the sight of the man in the room.
Caitlin seemed happier than ever. "I'm glad you're back. This is Dr. Henry Hewitt. This is Barry Allen, Professor Martin Stein and Belén Palayta."
Stein shook hands with Henry. "How do you do?"
Henry seemed in awe. "The illustrious Martin Stein. I've read all your papers back at Hudson, especially on transmutation. Fascinating. You're a legend."
"Kiss-ass," Belén mumbled under her breath but she soon realized it wasn't as quiet as she thought because Cisco had snickered beside her. Even Barry had let a smile slip.
Stein laughed shyly at the praises. "Oh, please. I think you're overestimating my contribution to the field. I-I appreciate your enthusiasm."
Caitlin happily walked to the other three. "Isn't he great?"
"He's got an ego the size of Texas-" Cisco muttered, "-but, yeah, he's alright."
Caitlin rolled her eyes at him. "So, where's Jefferson Jackson?"
"We just need more time," Barry sighed. It turned out the younger candidate was more stubborn than they thought.
"We don't have more time. I couldn't find another power source for the cane and that thing's running out." Cisco didn't really like Henry that much but Stein was running out of time.
"So then...that's it?" Belén asked. "We convince Henry to do it?"
Caitlin smiled. "Oh he's already agreed. We can do the merge right now."
"What do you mean? You told him the details of the Firestorm Matrix?" Barry gave her an incredulous look.
"Absolutely, becoming Firestorm is a huge life change. He needs to know what he's getting himself into."
They were then taken when the two scientists chanted their apparent school's theme.
"Aw, look at that, that's so cute," Cisco sarcastically rose from his chair, smiling impossibly wide. "We'll have two Professor Steins if this works."
Belén laughed. "I don't think anyone could be professor Stein. There can only be one softie scientist here."
Being settled, they gathered up the potential new Firestorm and Cisco stood in front of Henry holding the splicer in his hands, giving Henry a final instruction.
"When I put this splicer on your chest you're gonna feel a rush. That's a molecular primer being released into your body. Then you can make physical contact with Professor Stein, and Firestorm Matrix will take over."
"Easy enough," Henry nodded, but the manner in which he said those words gave the impression he thought it was simple math terms.
"Ready?" Cisco asked both men this time.
"No time like the present," Stein held his cane for Caitlin to take. "Thank you, my dear."
"Okay," Cisco put the splicer on Henry's chest. The device immediately whirred to life as it sprouted three metal bars across Henry's chest.
Both Henry and Stein turned to face each other, their hands reaching to make contact with the other. Their tips flamed on before dying out, leaving the two very much separated.
"Try again," Caitlin encouraged them after a moment of confusion.
They reached out to merge again but not even flames had appeared that time. It appeared that it was not going to work.
"This is unexpected…" Stein pulled his hand back.
"Something's supposed to be happening, right?" Henry shot the others an irritated look. "Why isn't it working?"
Belén didn't like the attitude displayed towards them like it was their fault. "Genius if we knew we wouldn't be having this problem."
Cisco stepped towards the two men to take off the splicer from Henry. "Uh, well, looks like you two aren't compatible after all."
"So all this was for nothing?" Henry now openly snared.
"Believe me, no one is more disappointed than I am," Stein despondently sighed, but Henry flatout ignored the implications of the failure.
"Yeah, don't be so sure about that. Next time, try to get your act together before you get someone's hopes up." Henry stormed out of the cortex.
The group didn't know how to react after that setback. Stein would have to continue muffling through for the moment.
"So, what happens now?" Belén dreaded to ask. She and Barry walked down the street leading up to her house. "If Henry Hewitt can't merge…"
"We have to hope that Jefferson Jackson comes through," Barry said, shrugging his shoulders.
"You met him with professor Stein today, right? Did he look interested?"
"Uum…" Barry made a face that said it all.
"Well, I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens tomorrow," Belén hoped this other candidate would turn out to be better than Hewitt. They walked up to Belén's front porch staircase.
"Is there anyone home?" Barry looked at the dark windows of her house. Belén told him earlier in the day her mother would be staying at a hotel in the meantime they made good on the house deed.
"No, it'll just be me and Axel," Belén moved up to the door to unlock it. "I need to start packing, actually. I'm leaving Axel with Mrs. Andrews for the rest of the day so I can get a head start."
"But you're staying alone in the night?" Barry's tone indicated his outright refusal.
"Relax," Belén rolled her eyes and opened the door, "I doubt Zoom or Datura make house visits."
"I...Bells, do we really want to push that luck? Would it kill you to just stay with Caitlin some more time?"
"No offence to Caitlin, but what exactly makes it more safe at her place than here?" Belén smiled as Barry fumbled over an answer. "It's not like Caitlin has powers. Buuuuut…" she pretended innocence, "...you know, I wouldn't be opposed to some help with packing. Without the speed."
"Oh c'mon," Barry complained but was already coming in after her. Belén giggled while he began making his case on why he should very much be allowed to use said speed.

The next day, the group was more than happy to see Jefferson Jackson deciding to meet with them. The young man was fascinated by all the scientific machinery set around and had to take a moment to really get the jist of the place.
"I thought S.T.A.R. Labs had to shut down," he remarked after a while.
"You can say it's under new management," Belén innocently waved a hand from her spot at the desk. She figured he looked more or less the same way she did when she first stepped foot in the room a year ago.
"Cool. So, let's get started," Jax clapped his hands. "You got some kind of "Billion Dollar Man" technology that gonna fix my knee?"
Barry realized the other man was under the ruse they would be bringing him back to his regular self. "Actually, Jax, this isn't about fixing your knee."
"What are you talking about?"
"When the Particle Accelerator exploded, the energy wave that collided with you is known as dark matter," Caitlin began explaining.
"And it didn't just hurt your knee," Stein finished for her. "It-it changed the molecular structure of your body."
Jax raised an eyebrow at him. "Whoa, hold on, Grey. So you're saying I'm like one of those meta-humans I keep hearing about on the news?"
Stein was not amused by the little nickname the man had branded him with. "Yes, I am. Please, call me Professor."
"We think you have potential capabilities," Cisco tried to explain next, assuming they were freaking Jax out.
"What kind of capabilities?"
"The same as Professor Stein: the ability for your body to process fission and fusion," Caitlin answered.
Cisco raised the splicer device for Jax to see. "And you can harness excess energy and turn it into these massive nuclear blasts."
"And, if it helps, you can fly," Belén added whimsically, adding a moment later in a low voice, "Wish I could fly."
Jax was bewildered and glanced at Stein sitting on a chair, looking far too, well, old to do all those powers. "So you're saying you can do all this?"
"Only during times of convergence with a willing partner.
"Convergence?" Jax concluded what they needed from him and laughed. "You and me? No, this is crazy."
"No, Jax, this is your chance to right the wrong that was done to you," Caitlin frowned at his careless reaction.
"Yeah, sorry, you got the wrong guy," Jax made a signal he was going to leave. "I don't want nothing to do with this."
Caitlin wasn't going to give up and cut him off. "Wait a second, we are giving you the chance to be a superhero, and you're gonna say no that quickly?"
"Yeah, not my kind of thing," Jax said.
Stein began pushing himself upwards from his chair "If the man isn't willing to participate-"
"Look, I saw your test scores, Jax. Your grades were good enough to get into college, but you didn't go," Caitlin continued on, sounding angrier. "Why? Is this the type of guy you are? One setback and you fold? Well, then maybe you're not the guy for us anyway."
"Caitlin-" Belén meant to stop her but the damage was done.
"Well, maybe I'm not," Jax sourly agreed and stormed out.
"Maybe this just wasn't meant to be," Stein exceptionally walked out as well.
"Caitlin you shouldn't have done that," Belén got up her chair, earning a very sharp look from the brunette in return.
"He said no to being a superhero. Who does that?" Caitlin angrily looked at the others for back up. "I mean, you didn't say no when you had the chance. Cisco, would you?"
Cisco battled through a nervous laugh. "Chance to have superpowers? Sign me up."
"Look, we're asking Jax to change his entire life, to sacrifice what he does have," Barry tried simplifying it for Caitlin, because he thought she'd been a bit hard on Jax too. "I mean, that's not a decision that can be made lightly. It took me a long time to figure out this whole hero thing."
Caitlin still didn't understand. "Exactly, which is why we need someone who wants to do this."
"Where are you going?" Belén watched the woman begin to leave.
"To get Hewitt back. We have to try again," Caitlin said loudly and stormed away.

Later that day, Barry called in Patty to give her the results of her "shark teeth". As soon as Patty heard the results, she projected grave disappointment.
"Human DNA?" she looked up from the results.
"Yup, definitely not a man-shark. Not even a land shark, Ma'am," Barry laughed but Patty seemed pretty upset.
"Well, thanks for testing it for me," Patty sighed and turned to leave.
"What are you gonna do now?"
Patty stopped and thought for a moment. "I don't know, probably file it under "never gonna happen." I have another case anyway."
"Oh, anything I can help you with?"
"No, no, no, no, Detective said definitely n-not," Patty knew she was being a horrible liar but in her defence she warned Joe she couldn't keep secrets very well. And keeping the newest case that involved apparently the deceased Harrison Wells was a big one.
Barry immediately recognized her off look and worried. "Is everything okay?"
Patty did not make things better by laughing so nervously. "Sure, why?"
"I don't know, you're just acting kind of different…"
"No! No. I'm the same old P. Spivot, you know?" Patty inwardly smacked herself for being so obvious. She needed to leave fast. "I have to go, but thank you so much for testing this, and I'll see you."
Barry couldn't even get an "okay" out when the woman had already rushed out. He decided he would go to Joe himself for some answers. Why wouldn't Joe want him working on a case with them? It wasn't like him.
As Barry was coming down the stairs, he caught sight of Veronica coming out of the main office. Thinking of their oh-so-grand meeting the previous day, Barry thought he would try it again with some better results. He knew Belén was right in that Veronica didn't know him and perhaps they just needed time but it did bother him that this woman decided - out of the blue - that she wouldn't like him.
"Ms. Green?" he called to the woman engrossed with a file in her hands. Soon as she looked up Barry could see her eyes narrow a bit. "Everything...okay?" That was a stupid question but Barry couldn't think of another way to start.
"Of course. I just finished with papers for my transfer. I start this Monday," Veronica informed.
"That's great! I guess we'll be seeing each other more often then," Barry smiled but Veronica just stared.
"Yes…" Veronica didn't have to openly say that she wasn't as thrilled as one would think.
Barry saw that and inwardly sighed. "Ms. Green, I just want to say that I'm very happy you and Bells are working on a new relationship."
"Bells?" Veronica repeated her daughter's nickname with distaste.
"U-uh, sorry, Belén. That's just...what we call her sometimes…" Barry said slowly, seeing no such progress. Veronica still did not lighten up. "Anyways, I just…" he sighed, deciding to simply be honest with how he felt and see what happened from there, "...Belén has suffered a lot, I've seen it, and I think she could really use her mother. She deserves that."
"Yes, well, she deserves more doesn't she?" Veronica openly said instead, jabbing him with her double meaning. Her knowing smile on him didn't make Barry feel any better.

"She said that?" Cisco gaped after hearing Barry's story - which was admittedly funny in some point. The two were in the cortex, watching over Axel while Belén went for some coffee in the kitchen of the building. "Duuuude…" Cisco began to chuckle, much to Barry's offence
"Why does everyone think it's so funny?" he frowned. First Joe, and now Cisco? Next thing he knew Iris would burst out laughing next.
"I mean, it would happen to you," Cisco walked over to the desk where Axel sat. He glanced at the boy who was busy attempting to write his name on paper, oblivious to their talk.
"Thanks," Barry frowned. "I get that not everyone is gonna like me but...this precise woman happens to be Belén's mother. She has to like me."
Cisco smirked as he plopped down on a chair next to Axel. "Right."
"I mean, Bells won over my Dad so quick…" Barry began to pace in front of the desk.
"Well, Belén is adorable, so…" Cisco trailed off when Barry glared for his lack of seriousness. "Alright, no time for jokes, then."
"No," Barry shook his head and came to a stop. He put his hands on the edge of the desk and sighed. "I can...see a future with Belén, I really can, and in that future...I don't see this," he gestured to the situation.
Cisco raised his eyebrows, able to barely to hold his teasing smile back. "Belén Allen?"
"Hey!" Belén had walked in, eyes wide and on Cisco. "I don't know what you were talking about but I know 'shut up' fits perfectly."
Cisco found it even more difficult not to tease. Belén placed down a mug of coffee for Cisco on the desk, handed Barry his own then took her own.
"So, dare I ask what we were discussing?" she made eyes at Barry who was busy trying not to be as red as possible.
"Auntie Belén! Look at my name!" Axel waved his paper in the air, nearly smacking Cisco on the face a couple times.
"Let me see that before you paper cut this beautiful face of mine," Cisco took the paper from the boy and looked down at the squiggly-lined name. "Well, for a four year old, it's not that bad."
"It's my homework," Axel said proudly.
"Great job, Axel," Belén mused after seeing the paper. "Least your name isn't Annah-Belén with a hyphen and everything," she shook her head and shot Barry a look. "You and I know about long names, don't we Bartholomew?"
The speedster silently glowered.
"You guys," Caitlin came rushing into the room seeming very concerned.
"What's wrong?" asked Barry, but Caitlin came directly for the computers. She said nothing as she typed and pulled up a page on the one of the computers up on the wall.
It was a news-reporter in the middle of a newscast, the byline underneath reading something about questioning a Henry Hewitt.
"What's…?" Belén blinked at the screen.
"There was a scene at Mercury Labs where apparently Hewitt showed some sort of metahuman abilities," Caitlin explained, sighing deeply. "He nearly hurt one of his bosses and the witness said he was unusually aggressive."
"But...he has powers now?" Belén looked at the others for some help understanding that.
"Hewitt's dormant abilities must have been triggered when we attempted the merger," Barry realized.
"And that could be catastrophic," Caitlin crossed her arms. "If his powers are anything like professor Stein's then he requires a grounding mechanism to stabilize his volatility."
"Yeah, he's gonna pop his top," Cisco scoffed, wondering if he hadn't done it on his own already. The man seemed to carry a temper with him anyways. "And considering he's got a long history of violence - according to his police record - we probably don't have much time."
"Police record?" Barry threw a look over to Caitlin.
"I didn't find a police record," the brunette said defensibly.
Cisco scoffed. "Yeah, of course not, it was sealed, but guess what, ya boy hacked in and-" he started on the computer, "-hold on, wait for it."
"Yowzah," Belén's eyes roamed the heavy police record Cisco pulled up for them.
"One count battery, two counts aggravated assault, court-ordered anger management therapy," Cisco listed.
"He seemed like such a nice guy," Caitlin said dejectedly.
"Looks are deceiving," Belén remarked.
"Professor Stein is getting worse. And Hewitt's like this because of me. And now Jefferson Jackson will never come back because of what I said," Caitlin felt completely guilty for the mess she thought she was responsible for. "I just didn't believe that he has what it takes."
"This isn't because you didn't believe in him," Barry made her stop for a moment. "Sometimes, great possibilities are right in front of us, and we don't see them, because we choose not to. I think that we need to be open to exploring something new."
Caitlin valued his words, she did, and nodded her head. "I'm gonna go fix it," she mumbled and turned to leave.
"We have to keep an eye on professor Stein," Cisco got up from his chair. "Time is running out."
"Yeah," Belén moved over for Axel. "We'll be back later, then. I promised my mother I would show her my new place. Which reminds me…" she started smiling at Barry, with purpose, "...I know I said no speed for moving out, but...considering I'm a bit behind…"
"I got it," Barry nodded, promising her. "I'll go in later tonight, don't worry."
"Thank you," Belén ushered Axel off his chair and the two walked off.
"So...we're just not gonna tell her that her mothers hates you?" Cisco curiously looked after Belén.
"No," Barry replied instantly. With a warning finger for Cisco to keep quiet as well, he walked out too.

As soon as Belén had gotten word from her mother she was waiting for her back in their old home, Belén did her best to get there on time. If there was one thing her mother despised it was tardiness.
"My toys!?" Axel gasped the moment he saw various boxes already piling up around the living room. "Auntie Belén, are my toys in there!?"
"Don't worry Axel, your things are in your room," Belén assured as she closed the door. "Mom?" she called, leaving her purse on a stand by table.
Veronica walked out from the kitchen with a glass of water in her hand. Axel was delighted to see his grandmother and ran forwards to hug her. "Grandma, wanna play with my toys with me?" he asked excitedly.
"Not right now, sweetheart," Veronica smiled at him, speaking a soft voice. Belén honestly couldn't see that version of her mother as, well..her mother. It was always arguments and bickering with the others.
"Aaaw," Axel pulled back and turned away.
"Axel, go on out to the backyard for a moment," Belén instructed the child.
"Okay!"
"But stay away from Aunt Belén's flowers, alright?"
"Yes!" Axel promised and rushed for the back door.
"So you've been packing…" Veronica lowered her glass to observe the room. "I checked upstairs and...you're almost completely packed too."
"Yeah," Belén shrugged. "I want to get out of here as fast as possible."
"You know I'm not kicking you out-"
"No, yeah, I know that," Belén promised her. "I just…" her eyes began to look around the familiar living room, "...don't like being here anymore. There's too many bad things, memories...I can't continue living here if I want to function normally."
"You're almost set then," Veronica gestured to the packing boxes behind them. "I'm surprised you packed so fast."
"I had help from Barry, Mom," Belén rolled her eyes.
"Oh," Veronica could not help the face expression that settled.
Belén saw it too and frowned. "Oh c'mon, are you actually not liking him? Barry mentioned it but I just thought he was being dramatic."
"He told you that?" it appeared Veronica was offended and yet, upset that apparently Barry had disclosed this information.
"Well gee, Mom, considering I'm his girlfriend and he just met my Mom who created such a negative image of him...yeah, he did mention it because he was upset."
Veronica made a small noise and shook her head. She brought her glass to her lips and drank.
"Can I just ask what is the problem?" Belén sighed, so completely done with arguments between them. "You know nothing of me, and then you have the audacity to hate my boyfriend whom you've never even properly met."
"The last time I heard he broke up with you in a very harsh way," Veronica tilted her glass, pretending to be interested in the swirling water. "And that left you so bad you decided to go to a psychologist."
"Hey-" Belén struck a sharp finger at her mother, "-that was because of Maritza, Axel, Rayan, and the frikin black-hole that appeared in the sky as well! I decided to go to Dr. Baeva for me. I decided I wanted to feel better, to be better so I went for professional help."
"Belén-"
"No, Mom, you're being unfair," Belén said softly. "I bet grandma and grandpa were against at least one of your boyfriends when you were my age. And how about Nona Enger? Remember how that feels?"
Veronica's lips twitched into a smile. "Your father's mother was an outright..." she definitely wouldn't finish that sentence out loud.
"Can't you at least give him a chance?" Belén asked. "One dinner - that's all I'm asking. You can get to know Barry and see that he's really sweet and...and dorky, I'm not gonna lie," she smiled. "But overall he is someone that I can truly think about having a future with."
Veronica's attention was drawn most by the last statement. "That much, huh?" she asked with eyebrows raised.
Belén nodded. "Yes."
Veronica gave a small nod as she thought about the deal proposed. "Okay-" Belén's eyes widened, "-I accept. One dinner-" she raised a finger, "-this weekend."
The biggest smile spread across Belén's face. "Oh my God, thank you!" she rushed up to Veronica and surprised her with a large hug.
Belén rarely hugged her.

By the time Belén returned to STAR Labs, much had happened. But it was to her delight to learn that Jax had come through and merged successfully with professor Stein, creating a new Firestorm. Unfortunately, she also learned that Henry Hewitt was up and about again attacking people. Barry and the new Firestorm had gone out to stop him.
"You sure Jax can handle this?" Belén anxiously stood behind Caitlin and Cisco at the desk. "He did just get his powers…"
"He has this," Caitlin assured with a new sense of faith in Jax.
"Plus, he has professor Stein in his head," Cisco added with a wag of his finger.
Belén agreed it was true but it still didn't diminish all her concerns.
"Hey, guys, cutting the power didn't work," Barry's voice came through the speakers. "It's like the more we anger him, the stronger he gets."
"Powers based on emotions? Hm," Belén pretended to think for a moment, "Now where have I seen that before."
"That's it," Caitlin realized. "The more powerful he becomes, the more unstable they become. Barry, make him angry, and he'll blow his fuse."
"Are you saying that I'm unstable?" Belén shot the brunette a look.
Caitlin made an apologetic face.
"Don't worry, we'll get her back when you can go full-on Azalea again," Cisco nudged Belén on the side. "Imagine what new sides you can unlock."
When all was said and done, Henry Hewitt was brought back to STAR Labs and placed in the pipeline where he would not be able to tell a soul of what he learned in the recent week. It appeared like his powers had diminished with his last fight. Now as the new firestorm prepared to leave to begin training again, the group went on to say their goodbyes.
"Why Are we going to Pittsburgh again?" asked Jax after hearing Stein mention it to Joe.
"A colleague of mine was monumental in helping train Ronald and me. She's graciously offered to help the two of us as well."
"How's she gonna help us?"
"Well, there were many aspects of our abilities that we never quite achieved. Hopefully now, we can fully realize that potential." Stein said hopefully and turned to say goodbye to Caitlin. "Oh, my dearest Dr. Snow. Ronald may be lost to us, but he will never be forgotten."
Caitlin hugged him goodbye.
"Okay but when you start flying...take a picture dammit," Belén told Jax, making him laugh. "I mean it. That view would be phenomenal."
"I think they'd have more to do, Bells," Barry came by for her.
"I was just saying...you know, if you got a chance," Belén casually waved her hand on her side.
Cisco approached them with the splicer in hand, excitedly apparently. "I went ahead and recalibrated the splicer so the merging should be even smoother now."
"Are you ready, Jefferson?" Stein asked the younger man. With a nod, Jax moved over so that the two would merge better.
"All right," Jax said after merging, still sounding surprised of his new ability. He erupted in flames and flew up into the sky.
"I really want that picture," Belén mumbled under her breath.
"Yeah c'mon," Barry tugged her by the hand. "You want to get lunch?"
"Mhm! So I can tell you the big news I have," Belén excitedly revealed.
"Interesting," Barry hummed in thought. He said a goodbye to the others and took off with Belén for Jitters.
"So, I talked to my Mom," Belén began as soon as they entered the place.
"You did…?" Barry made a face behind her.
"Yes, and I don't want you to freak out or anything but...she doesn't exactly favor you."
"No?" Barry feigned perfect surprise. "I wasn't dreaming?"
Belén sighed. "Nope. But I got her to give you a chance. You think you can do dinner with her and me this weekend?" there was a heavy alarm in Barry's face that questioned the sanity of the plan. Belén clapped her hands together, ready to plead. "I promise it will be just fine. You just have...to be yourself."
"I don't mean to be rude but I think 'being myself' is what got me into this situation in the first place," Barry released a breath he'd been holding in.
"She doesn't know you," Belén persisted. "She knows a part of you that...that wasn't you. Please say you'll do it? Pretty please?"
"Oh, sure, use that face on me, how can I refuse?" Barry sarcastically said.
"So...you'll come then?"
"Yes, of course I will," Barry nodded. "But you have to do one thing in return."
"What is it?"
"Don't leave me alone with her," Barry pleaded with a shaking voice.
Belén laughed but agreed nonetheless. Throughout the rest of their lunch, which turned out to last much later, Belén started giving Barry helpful tips for when they met with Veronica later that weekend. While Belén was confident that her mother would end up liking Barry she also thought that a little help couldn't hurt either. When they were finished, the two arrived at the CCPD for different reasons. Belén promised Patty they would have that pending coffee night - which switched to a movie night considering Belén had just come back from Jitters. Barry had a bit of work to finish before he could call it a night.
"So, any movie you're interested in seeing?" Belén asked Patty as the two walked out of the station.
"Something actiony?" Patty suggested and Belén just laughed.
"A cop wants to watch an action movie I'm not surprised!"
But the two had barely made it across the street when a loud clash stopped them in their tracks. Green vines had wrapped around trash cans and threw them towards the two women. They lunged in opposite directions to avoid being hit. Soon as Belén looked up she saw a woman in a glimmering green bodysuit and long ginger hair coming for her. There were bits of green plants adorning the corner of her eyes.
"What are you-"
The ginger made a wag of her finger and struck forwards a hand. Belén was hit with a thick vine tendril and blasted back against a street pole, effectively knocking her out.
"Oh my God!" Patty didn't waste a minute and whipped out her gun, taking aim at the ginger who was coming for them. "Put your hands in the air!"
But the ginger smirked and reached a hand out, making Patty begin to shoot. Poison Ivy swiveled with her vines to avoid the bullets successfully. Hearing the bullets, Barry appeared as the Flash to see what the trouble was and came to the horror sight instead.
"Flash," Poison Ivy's lips curled into a delighted smile. "Zoom wants you dead. But for now I'm here to collect for Datura."
"Over my dead body," Barry frowned. He sped Patty and Belén into the station and then returned. Poison Ivy had yet to even blink.
"Don't make me hunt my prey at this hour," Poison Ivy's darkened red lips curled into a sinister smile.
"Why are you hunting her in the first place?" demanded Barry.
"For Datura, of course," Poison Ivy held her hands out, ready to attack when someone blasted her with a high-tech gun. She cringed and fell forwards to reveal a hooded man.
The hooded figure made to leave just as he'd appeared but Barry sped after him. "Who the hell are you?" he grew tired of asking the same questions.
When the hooded man pulled down his hood, Barry wished he would have never asked.
The man turned out to be Harrison Wells.
From afar, the same brunette women who had watched Belén now watched the scene unfold with satisfaction. "Here we go," she glanced in the direction of the precinct with flashing red eyes.

The New Orleans dawn was breaking. The remains of the night were slowly being washed away by the  first rays of the sun. Elena was gazing out of the hospital windows into the horizon blank waiting for the results of Nick's check up. The attending came up to her informing her that Nick will be left for observation as he had lost significant amount of blood, and being an FBI agent they didn't want to risk anything by releasing him, even though his blood work showed that he wasn't in any risk at all. As the nurses left, Elena walked in the room they transferred him to.They wereboth silent. There was so much explaining to follow, but at the moment they just felt it wasn't the time or the place.
"I owe you my life" Nick said, swallowing hard.
"No, you don't. This is what partners are for. You saved mine, remember?"
"It's not the same."
"We are not keeping score. You got to rest. I will head back to the hotel, get a shower and change. I think they will let you out later today. I need to go meet Stavros. And interview the voodoo woman. I will swing by the magic shop later."
"Ok" Nick said closing his eyes. He was tired. The magic of the ointment Elena applied had worn off and now he felt the aftermath of the horrific ordeal he went through.
She looked at him warmly, making a small mental sigh. She enclosed him in her heart that night they played Monopoly. He shed his Agent demeanour off, and shown her a person he really was deep down. Kind, warmhearted, sweet.
Flashback
"I want justice for the victims. This is what drives me. Cold cases were the most challenging. I love challenges."
"Well, you are in the most challenging section of the FBI now." Elena said.
"And think that you are in it for the same reason. You care about the people. At least that's what I could say about your reports."
"Yeah. But I don't always manage to get it. You read that, too. There’s too many dead ends”
“I know. But you are not giving up - and I admire what you have accomplished. I do.” Nick said with a meaningful glimmer in his eyes.
Elena now took hold of his hand and squeezed it.
Nick fluttered his eyes open. They softly connected with Elena’s, making her shudder slightly. It had happened the first time they met, and they knew that there was this something deeply rooted. They both had felt it. Their souls connected before they were even aware of it.
“I got to go” Elena pulled her hand away. “See you later.”
Nick nodded, watching her get out of the room, his heart quivering dreamily. A secret smile curved his lips.
Outside, Elena pulled her phone out and dialed Jenna's number.
"Morning you," Jenna said as she picked up the call,"how are things? Is he going to be all right?"
"Yes," Elena replied,"I need you to send me all about the Bloodborns"
"So, you haven't talked?!" "He is still processing. I would be after the night he had. Sorry to wake you" Elena said apollogetically.
"You think I have slept?!"
"Hope Alaric has" Elena said. "Yeah, he has a full day at the University. So, you think this will complicate things?" “Things are complicated, but they actually are getting clearer”
"Elaborate" Jenna said, not understanding her niece’s logic.
"I can't. You would be involved an it is not goo at this point of investigation"
"Right. Be careful. My gut feeling tells me this is way bigger than just some random ritual killing" Jenna sighed.
"Yeah -got to go." Elena said and hung up.
At times Elena felt like she was reliving the twisted version of the 'Groundhog Day' movie. But here, no matter how hard she tried to get it put things right, things would always get even more tangled up.
Flashback
Years back, when she was about to enter the FBI Training Academy
"You know why they are recruiting you?" Jenna said.
"I know. It's not because I am so good at biochemistry" Elena replied.
"Straight to the special program?," Jenna continued, "I am not sure about this"
"I am going there, because of the resources. Because- the darkness is taking over and I have to do everything I can to stop it."
Jenna enveloped her niece a warm hug.

In Washington DC, a few hours later
Caroline walked in her office. Klaus saw her come in and went to her, knocking at the door out of courtesy.
"Today you have to slay. Take Liv with you and get make the summons on this case be worth our while" Klaus in a serious manner.
Caroline nodded. It was obvious the magic of him being this great comprehensive charmer disappeared over night and he was his usual emotionless sour self.
Why did she care. They had a job to do. Prosecute  criminals and put them in jail. Stop thinking with your heart. Echoed in her head. He is just another waste of time. That's how she labeled some of her men. She called Liv over to her office and they went through the case in question.
Rebekah's day started with somewhat better. One of her patients showed great improvement. But still there was no answer from Marcel. At times she wished she could just tune out.
****
In New Orleans, a few hours later
Elena stuffed nearly a whole beignet reading what Jenna had sent her. But there was nothing that could establish the connection to Nick and his blood needed to be used for a ritual.
"What is not right in this picture?" she muttered going through some of the facts of the Bloodbornes again.
Her phone rang and it was Agent Stavros, notifying her that he was now at the precinct.
"I am on my way" Elena said hanging up.
Meanwhile, in the hospital, Nick woke up with a throbbing headache, born from the strange magical potion Elena gave him. It had kicked something in him, bringing out a memory that rose up like a wind from nowhere.
Flashback
"You will forget about all of this," Dita Galindo said to Nick,"there are no monsters. That are just stories people invented. There are good and evil people. It is as simple as that. Now eat your dinner"
"But I know what I saw. That changed into a wolf." Nick said.
"No. The man befriended the animal. That is all. And your imagination is running wild. But it is all right. You're ten. You will grow out of it."
Dita Galindo did everything possible to make sure Nick didn't know anything of his origin. And he never bothered to find out. He concentrated to work hard at school and get out of Louisiana and get in the FBI. He was diligent, silent, dark and very meticulous. And the name vulture he got always digging into cases that were impossible to solve, digging into dead meat, as some of his colleagues would say.
Nick brushed his fingers over the side of the neck where he was bitten. He took a deep breath. The sudden realization that monsters that bit him were very real, shook him. These monsters wanted him. Why him? Who was he?
He got up and as he wanted to get up he felt faint for a moment. The nurse walked in suggesting he should lay down.
"I want to discharge myself," Nick said,"I will sign any paper. I am not staying here. I need to go"
The nurse checked his IV and then looked at Nick who closed his eyes for a moment. The images of the vampire biting him appeared again. He opened his eyes and now asked the nurse to call the doctor.
“You should rest.” the nurse tried to calm him down, but Nick was too agitated to listen to her.
“I want to see a doctor now! Get me the Attending. Now!” he demanded.
"You are not fit to do anything today" the Attending said.
"I am leaving, so can you just give me whatever I need to sign to get out - and you will be clear form any possible repercussions that might occur" Nick sat up. He pulled the IV needle out of his backhand.
The Attending could see that no matter what he said Nick was determined to leave. He bandaged his hand, and told him that the nurse would be with him shortly.
And so, he was out of the hospital, finding a cab in front that took him to the nearest rent-a-car place. His phone rang and it was Elena. He looked at it and thought for a second whether he should answer or not. The hospital must have told her that he had left. She was his partner and by rights, he had to answer her, but he chose not to and blocked her. But Elena rang again and he blocked her call again. He was not in the mood to talk to her. Not yet. First he had to get some answers himself. Then his voice mail alert came on and he now played her message.
"Whatever you think you are doing. Don't! I know it is not easy to process all what's happened. Been there.Call me back."
Deep down he knew she meant well. He knew that he was now led by his emotions that were jumping all over the place, like someone put him on live wire. But he left the reason behind and now drove like mad to Carencro, where his adoptive mother Dita lived.
Outside the Magic Shop, Elena was pissed that Nick took off without calling her and she now told Agent Stavros that they had to postpone 'scouring' the place.
"I have released Davina's body to the family. But they will not have the funeral till- " Dean said referring to the woman's heart.
Elena sighed. "You believe that it can be retrieved?"
"I heard what Agnes said to you." Dean replied.
Elena was quiet for a second. She could not pull the wool over his eyes. Dean was involved with Davina, but he didn't know how deeply involved she was in the vampiric world.
"Can I help you?" he offered.
"Nahh- plus- you need to rest. This is not over by far. I will need you fresh and ready for what's to come. See you tomorrow" Elena said jumping in the SUV.
"Bloodborns  are described as the offspring of both an Angel, and a Demon. However, users of this power will have the potential to become more powerful than either side.
This is due to the fact that said spirit would be neutral and possess power from the forces of both Light and Darkness. These beings are based off of the Nephillim, the hybrid offspring of an Angel and a human, with the only difference being that both parents are immortal spirits. Their children became Witchers, monster hunters."
"Answer, dammit!" Elena kept pressing the speedial with Nick’s number over and over again, but there was no answer. She drove like mad hoping to catch up with him before he got to Heloise's house. And she managed to get there some twenty minutes after him. She could hear Nick asking question after question and Dita not giving him any answers.
Elena knocked on the door and walked in, apologizing to Heloise for being so forward. Nick now looked at her surprised to see her there, "How did you know”
“Where you were?" Elena finished his sentence and sighing a little replied."I know - about you and where you lived as a kid."
It felt like he was slapped on his face. She could see the rage and disappointment rise in his eyes, "What a great partner you are?. What else do you know?"
Dita looked at Elena now, who gave her a nudge with her head to leave them for a moment on their own.
"I know that you are angry right now. And everything that had happened last night isn't helping" Elena said to Nick.
"You are kidding, right? Is this some kind of a sick joke to all of you? All my life I have been lied to. I want answers. But I don't want them from you. I don't know what shit you will tell me to cover something up" He felt faint again and now spat back Elena about the strange thing she gave him that probably was the reason for making him feel weak.
"Ok. Sit down. You are not back to yourself. You have lost a lot of blood."
"The magic makes him like that" Dita said.
Both Elena and Nick now looked at the witch’s direction.
"What magic?" Elena asked straight forward, as she knew that thing could get bad if there was a clash of magic inside a person.
"Set on him, to keep his real nature subsided" Dita said.
Nick sat down now as he was not feeling good.
"Right. Now you have tell me what magic was used on him" Elena said in a steady calm voice. It was clear that Dita was nervous, but she loved Nick, and clearly didn't want him to suffer.
Nick now started sweating and Elena now looked for some cold water and a towel to ease his condition a bit.
He gulped looking at her now. "Tell me- what am I? Why did they take me?"
"I will. But now- we need to get this magic out of you," Elena brushed Nick’s forehead with a damp cloth,"I am sorry that I kept things from you. Big mistake. Fucking big mistake"
Nick now took hold of the brunette’s arm looking at her with eyes that indicated he is going to slip away, but he managed to mutter. "Fucking big mistake, Gilbert"
"Yeah. Later- you can shout and be pissed as much as you want- but now- I need you to stay with me- do you hear me- Ok?"
Nick nodded a little- feeling like his whole body yet again felt like it was going to lose life.
Elena now ordered Dita to get the witch who had done this to him.
"She is not alive, anymore" Dita said.
"Then some other!, Elena said. "This has to be done. He will not make it otherwise. I am fucking serious!"
Dita just waved off with her head. “There is nobody. I’m sorry.”
Elena now took her phone and dialed a number.
"Valerie," Elena said and proceeded explaining what had happened.
"Right. This what you will do,” Valerie said to Elena, who now found a silver knife in the kitchen,"as you cut the blood from your wrist and you pour it in a clean silver bowl, put the dagger on his chest- as you tell the words- conlidam in sanguinem"
"This is going to work?" Elena said in desperation.
"It will"  Valerie said.
"All right," Elena said hanging up,"come on"
She pulled Nick up in a seating position and took his sweater off, and as she helped him lay back, she proceeded with the ritual.

Beautiful Red
(This is a short story I wrote in March 2017. End notes are from back then as well.)
-------------------
The phone rang loud in Suri's apartment. She picked up her cell and looked at the number.
"Mom?"
She hit the answer button. "Hello?" "Suri, come to the hospital on Fifth and Trevor street. Your grandma fell."
Shocked, she could only stutter as she quickly grabbed her purse and left to drive quickly to the hospital her mother spoke of, while getting the details from her on the way.
"Is she okay?" "Clearly not." "I meant, will she get better?" "Yes, but it will take some time. She will need to use a cane for a while." "What happened?" "She twisted her ankle while she was doing some garden work outside. The doctor is taking x-rays now to make sure that no bones are broken."
Suri reached the hospital, parked, and walked inside.
"I'm here, I'll find you shortly." She hung up and found the room her mother had told her, and they waited. And waited.
Finally the doctor arrived, pushing Suri's grandma in a wheelchair.
"Shadi has no broken bones, but she will have to stay here for a week before we can let her go home. After that, she will have to be more careful around the house and restrict any strenuous physical activity for another few weeks."
"See Natasha? I said I would be alright," Shadi said to Suri's mother. "You're such a worrywart, like your father." She slowly transferred into the bed and lay down, getting settled as if she were at home.
The doctor gave his final notes and left them to check on other patients. Silence filled the room for a few minutes.
"Please Mother, come live with me. It's dangerous to live out in the woods all by yourself." "I've been fine all this time, this was just a little fall. Just a few more years." "You said that a few years ago! Mother, you have to face the fact that you're old, and it's difficult for us to look after you if you're 2 hours away in the middle of nowhere!"
Shadi was quiet for a little while. Then she finally said, "I'll think about it. That's all I promise." "Better than nothing," Natasha said tersely.
Then Shadi looked at Suri. "Suri, child, can you house sit, just for the week? You can help eat the food before it spoils. But I understand if you can't take time off work." Suri smiled. "It's okay Grandma," she said. "I work with a computer. I can work anywhere." She didn't bother trying to explain the exact nature of her web design job; her grandma didn't even own a cell phone, let alone a computer.
Shadi nodded, not quite understanding, but grateful anyway. "Thank you. Just remember to water the plants on Wednesday."
Suri nodded. "No problem." She stood up and grabbed her purse. "Guess I'll head out then. I'll call you when I get there, Mom."
"Be careful! The woods are dangerous at night. Keep all the windows and doors locked!"
Rolling her eyes, Suri just replied "Yes Mom" as she left.

Suri looked over her suitcase one last time. She had enough clothes for a week, toiletries, her laptop and accessories, and most importantly, her tablet for reading. She was prepared to work comfortably out in the forest for a week, and hoped she could get more done out in the quiet than she could here in the city. Closing up her suitcase, she gathered her things, packed them into the trunk of her beat up yet trusty Cavalier and drove off to her grandmother's house.
Two hours later, she arrived after traversing a very long and windy mountain road to reach a small cottage out in the middle of the forest. Only one small dirt road led up to her grandmother's house, and very rarely did she get visitors other than Suri & Natasha. Looking at her phone, Suri breathed a sigh of relief as she saw that she had three bars. There must be a cell phone tower nearby, probably on the peak in the distance, she thought.
She lugged her suitcase up the porch stairs, opened the door with the key her grandma gave her, and turned on the light. Or tried to. She flipped the switch a couple of times before realizing that the power was out. She turned on the flashlight app on her phone and got her gear into the living room, and then went out the back door to find the basement.
Turning the corner, she found the basement doors and unlocked the padlock. Pulling with most of her strength, she lifted the heavy doors up and went inside to find the fuse box.
"Dammit, I was hoping this wasn't the case." She turned the power off and started to go through the circuit list, and while reading instructions on her phone about how to reset breakers, she quickly fixed what she needed to and turned the power back on. The overhead light in the basement flickered to life, and she sighed. "Thank goodness," she breathed, turning to leave.
Then she stopped. In the entrance of basement stood a very large canine. Hoping it was a dog, Suri stood still and barely breathed. "Here doggy?" she whispered, scared that it wasn't a dog. It was far too big.
The canine tilted its head, then slowly stepped forward into the light. It looked like an Alaskan Malamute, but slightly bigger. Suri couldn't be sure, but she was familiar with her friend's malamute, and it looked a bit similar. She took a chance, since she knew running was useless at this close of a range.
She held her hand out, angled her body slightly away from the dog without taking her eyes off of it completely, and let it come to her.
Sniffing the air, the dog snarled a bit before walking straight up to her and shoving its nose right into her hand.
Suri took a deep breath and finally looked down at the dog. It was looking up at her with an intense stare.
"Are we cool?" she asked tentatively, knowing that the dog couldn't understand her.
The dog snuffled at her, and licked her hand.
"I guess we're cool," she said, relaxing a bit. She slowly knelt down and started to pet the dog. It just wagged his tail its tail happily, all the while staring at her.
"I gotta go, buddy. Let's get out of the basement." She got up and started to leave, and noticed that the dog shadowed her movements, all the way out of the basement, and back to the house.
Raising an eyebrow at the dog, who was patiently waiting at the door as if it wanted to go in, and had done this before, Suri decided to call her mom.
"Hey mom? Are you still with grandma? Yeah? Can I talk to her for a second?"
Suri waited for a few moments while her mom gave the phone to her grandma. "What is it, child?" "Do you own a dog? There's one here, and it looks like it wants to go inside, like its been here before." "Oh, that's Rafe. Let him in, he's fine. He's a silly one, he'll eat at the table like a human, so just put a plate of meat and a bowl of water on the table for him. You'll know where he sits. His food is in the fridge in a box with his name on it." "Oh. Alright. Anything else you want to tell me about house sitting?" "No, that's it. Rafe is very independent, he'll come and go as he pleases, but he'll always come back at dusk to eat and sleep. He sleeps wherever, so just let him be. You can't move him once he's chosen a spot." "Alright Grandma. I'm going to try and get some work done before I sleep, so I'll talk to you later." "Good night, dearest."
Suri hung up and sighed. She didn't know dog sitting was part of this deal. But free food, especially her grandma's leftovers, was absolutely worth it. Not that she wasn't a shabby cook, but if she could get food for free, then why not stay and house sit? Or in this case, also dog sit.
She opened the door and Rafe walked straight in and hopped into a chair on the far side of the table. It was the only corner of the table with a large plastic place-mat, and a bowl and a plate were set out.
"Jeez, I get the idea." Suri opened the fridge and pulled out a box labeled "Rafe" and opened it. "This looks like human food, buddy."
Rafe woofed quietly.
"So... you eat this?"
Woof.
Suri just shrugged, and scooped up some of the food into his plate. Then she took his bowl and filled it up with water, and set it down in front of him. She sat opposite the dog and watched him eat. At first he didn't notice her, but when he did, he stopped for a moment to look back at her.
"Don't mind me. I'm not hungry. You go ahead and eat."
Rafe growled, and started nudging his plate to her with his nose.
"Wow, typical male. Alright, I'll go find a bit of food and eat with you, okay?"
Rafe woofed once, and then started eating again.
"Bizarre, it's like you understand me or something. Or I'm already having cabin fever and it's only been an hour since I got here."
Suri ate a bit of rice pilaf, washed up, and brought her things upstairs to the guest room where she and her mother had always stayed when they came out to visit. She had just started to get ready for bed, when she heard Rafe howling.
"Oh my god, he better not be like this all night," she grumbled as she headed downstairs. She saw him at the front door, pawing at the door knob.
"What, you want out?" She opened the door, but Rafe just stood there and stared at her, like she had forgotten something. She closed the door and started to walk away, but Rafe gently bit her shirt and pulled her back.
"What?"
He pawed the door knob again.
It suddenly clicked. "Oh, you want me to lock it?" She locked the door and the deadbolt above it. Satisfied, Rafe started walking towards the back door, looking back as he went to make sure she was following him. She locked the back door too.
"There, you happy?" Rafe looked up at her and grinned a doggy grin, tongue hanging out and all.
Suri smiled. She couldn't help growing fond of the big dog. She knelt down and hugged him. "You're so cute, smile for me more often, okay?" Rafe pulled back and licked her nose, making Suri wrinkle it and grin.
She let him go and went upstairs, Rafe following her like a shadow. He went into the room with her and hunkered down on the large rug in front of the bed. He watched her sort out her things, but when she started to take off her clothes, she noticed he covered his face with his paws, and looked away. Curious, she walked around to the other side of him, and he turned his head the other way, his paws still over his eyes.
Suri let out an amused chuckle. "That's a first. A dog who understands human modesty. Well thank you, Rafe." She patted the dog on the head before going into the bathroom to clean up for bed.
Once she was done, she plopped onto the bed and sighed contentedly. She had missed this place. Thinking back to her many visits as a child, she grinned and curled up onto the big bed. Soon after, she felt Rafe hop onto the bed and curl up next to her.
"Wow, you're pretty forward, doggy." She reached out to scratch his head. "G'night." Woof.
***
Three days passed in an almost idyllic way. Suri got more work done than she had expected, and tethering her laptop to her phone, sent the finished product to her client, who, pleased with her progress, paid her immediately and referred her to another client, who was out of the office for the rest of the week and would get back to her about a new project when she returned. That meant that Suri had the next four days off, to read and relax. Or she could work on getting more clients, which she started doing in the morning.
But by afternoon, she was bored, and started to read books on her tablet. Her guilty pleasure, paranormal romance, where impossible things happened to normal girls, big beefy guys with supernatural powers would devote themselves wholeheartedly to plain Jane women. Suri could relate. Her past relationships had all been boring, tepid romances where the men quickly got bored with her after they realized she wasn't some exotic bimbo that they could coax into bed. That, and her lack of experience made her pretty boring in the sheets, and she knew it. She had been told that several times, and while she didn't always agree with why a man broke up with her, she could at least agree that she lacked the passion. But how could she have any passion for those men? They were all boring. And she knew she had impossible standards, that's why she bothered dating below them. But in the end, she was unsatisfied, and it showed in her lackluster relationships. She was aware that she was rather impossible to please, and had resigned herself to a life of solitude and being an old maid. She had even taken up knitting the previous year as a joke to her friends, but she actually ended up enjoying it a lot.
Lost in her books, she didn't realize it had become night as she heard Rafe howling at her back door. Coming down the stairs, she stopped when she saw an armed robber, clearly waving a knife menacingly at her dog, who was growling and trying to snap at the man's legs. He finally push kicked Rafe away, and Suri could only watch as the dog tumbled into another room and out of her sight.
"Rafe!"
The robber's attention switched to her, and he began to stalk towards her. She immediately began backing up towards the kitchen, hoping to pick up something to defend herself. She didn't want to take her eyes off the man, but running backwards wasn't doing her any favors either. She finally turned to sprint away, and she could tell the man was about pounce on her. Her legs tensed, her arms reached out-
And she heard the man yelp. She spared a glance behind her and suddenly stopped. A large naked bear of a man had the robber in a choke hold, and she just watched as he was slowly subdued, his air running out, and finally passed out. The naked man dropped the robber on the floor, and slowly looked up at her. Putting her hand over her mouth to keep herself from screaming, she started to back up again towards the kitchen.
"Suri."
She stopped. "Do I know you?"
The man slowly walked towards her, and she began trembling uncontrollably. This man was all muscle, and there was no getting away fast enough. She wasn't in terrible shape, but she knew when she was physically outclassed. As he reached her, he slowly lifted a hand to her face, gently brushing her hair from her cheek.
"You know me, Suri. We've been sharing a bed for the past three nights."
She blinked. Her mind could not, would not accept what he just said. But her heart wanted to believe.
"...Rafe?"
His bright white smile contrasted with his coffee colored skin and his dark, wavy hair that fell around his piercing grey eyes.
Suri lifted her hands to Rafe's chest, touching him to make sure she wasn't hallucinating. She lifted her arms and ran her hands through the thick waves, familiarity running through her senses.
Rafe gently took hold of her hands and stepped out of her reach. "I need to tie up the criminal and leave him by the main road. Lock the door behind me. Then stay upstairs and wait for me. There's a metal baseball bat in Grandma's closet on the left side."
He was met with a silent nod, and he watched as she made her way upstairs quickly. Once she was out of sight, he found the rope and duct tape in the coat closet and securely tied up the burglar, put tape over his mouth, and hauled the man outside. He looked up to see if Suri was looking outside; she was not. He stretched, and his human form extended and grew fur, and he shifted into his wolf-man form. Tucking the tied up man under one arm, he loped out quickly to the main road, dropped the man off, and loped back to the house.
Rafe shifted back as he approached the porch, and noticed that Suri was standing in the doorway, silhouetted by the light, a baseball bat over one shoulder.
"I thought I told you to wait for me upstairs."
"I saw you coming."
He paused. He didn't want to let her see all of him tonight. Well, he supposed she had technically seen all of him, but only in his human form.
Suri put the bat down and walked up to him. She wrapped her arms around him and sighed.
"Let's talk, Rafe."
He nodded and followed her as she led him inside. They talked. He told her about how he was cursed by a shaman long ago, how her grandma had been trying to find a way to break his curse while he worked for her as protector, gardener, and personal aide. She took it all in, not interrupting, just accepting his words.
At the end of his tale, he looked at her.
She took a deep breath, closed her eyes, and stood up. He watched.
"Let's go to bed. We'll deal with this in the morning."
She started upstairs, and when Rafe didn't follow, she turned and held her hand out.
"I've gotten used to sleeping with you beside me. Or do you not want to anymore?"
Rafe smiled and got up to follow her.
"I do. Let's sleep. We'll figure things out tomorrow."
And they did.
------------------------------- Ugh, this is not quite how I wanted to end this, but I wrote this so long ago that I kind of forgot what the end goal was...
