Rambling Fan Review of the donghua Heaven Official's Blessing (English dub)
I just need to ramble for a bit after finishing the entire series (PLEASE TELL ME THERE IS A SEASON 3!).
Quick Quick review version: I LOVE IT even if I didn't read the novels yet. Highly recommended.
Quick review version: Why is this so underrated?! Would me fangirling about it make Season 3 to arrive faster? I GET THE HYPE NOW!
Actual review/rambling:
So just to be clear on a few things so that everyone is on the same page:
I deliberately chose the English dub once I saw it was an option because my brain needs to rest from all my academic readings and it was too tired to read the subtitles;
There is nothing professional about this review - it's just me writing all my feelings after crying on the closing montage of season 2. Considering that I was emotionally crying on the closing montage of Season 1, I don't know why I'm surprised at myself for doing the same on the Season 2 montage;
I read some spoilers from the wikia pages because I want to know if Hualian gets a happy ending or if I have to write one for them;
I am horny for James Cheek's Hua Cheng voice;
Having said that I am so impressed with his vocal chemistry with Howard Wang's Xie Lian. When I read the novels (when life finally allows me to do so), their voices will be the voices in my head for Hua Cheng and Xie Lian;
I watched some of Kictor's videos on TGCF , specifically this video but I stopped at around the 12 minute mark since I was confused at first midway on the first episode on who was supposed to be Xie Lian's love interest. I initially thought it was going to be a love triangle with Xie Lian being fought over. I was impatient and I needed to know just the background details. I can confidently say that I think this video helped me in clarifying some things and I think the emotional reveals still work;
I am very aware that there were certain scenes that needs to be changed because of China's censorship laws and that the novels have more leeway;
A part of my brain is already making outlines for fanfiction for Hualian; and
The most important point - It is okay to disagree with me. This is just my opinion on what touched me the most while watching the story unfold.
Okay now to the fangirl rambling:
As I type this to the youtube loop of Red Supreme by Hu Xia I've got a lot of positively emotional feelings.
I LOVE how their love story unfolds. How they save each other and they complement each other so well.
I especially love how the story within itself shows why Hualian loves each other even though they may not expressly say it but it is so obvious from their actions to each other and their internal monologue that we are given every now and then.
Season 1 is about showing that Hua Cheng's reason for existing is his love for Xie Lian.
Season 2 is about showing why Hua Cheng's feelings are from genuine love for Xie Lian.
If anything their love story teaches an important lesson: Hope doesn't have to be perfect to be effective.
At the start of Season 1, everyone in Heaven has given up hope on Xie Lian being nothing more than a waste of space who has the audacity to ascend three times and it seems like everyone except Ling Wen who after informing him of his debt because of the damage his latest ascension caused was able to help him get a task to quickly get more credit to pay off the debt (to be honest I still don't really understand the currency of Heaven but maybe that's kinda the point that the story is trying to make in that in a place supposedly of paradise this should be ridiculous. Mortals believing themselves reaching heaven will grant them freedom only to be subjected to the current system in place). And it is this little piece of hope that leads him to Hua Cheng who is the very proof that he has managed to greatly affect someone by giving them hope when they wanted to give up. Xie Lian may think later on that he might have said something ridiculous but to Hua Cheng who wanted to commit suicide, his very existence is the hope he needed to change his perspective on life and it is because of Xie Lian telling him to make him the purpose of Hua Cheng's life that Hua Cheng finally got to live. Even if now he is a ghost, from the brief time he actually truly lived life, that experience showed him what are the things that matters the most. And him achieving greatness in the form of being one of if not the most dangerous calamity that Heaven had to face. So much so that he has killed 33 Gods and has gained a reputation of being someone who is essentially the God killer. He did all of this because Xie Lian saw him in a time when no one wanted to see Hua Cheng, much more help him. This is mirrored in Ban Yue who kept the hope that Xie Lian gave her when he shared with her his dream of saving the world. Something he is later embarrassed about but it was enough for her to do her best to change things, even when it involved the massacre within the city walls. And once again this is shown in Lang Qianqiu to whom Xie Lian was a mentor to (I forgot the word they used for mentor but you get what I mean), when he taught him that it is not the royal family but the people that makes a nation thrive and this lead to Qianqiu leading a peaceful reign and united the nations of Xianle and accomplishing what several others had hoped for.
And this is where these relationships begin to act as a foil to show why the Hualian relationship works.
Ban Yue was misguided and did not have enough experience to trust in herself to know the difference between right and wrong and the subtly gray area in between. While influenced by Pei Jr, she also isn't wrong for saying that she also had some responsibility. But she thinks that the beatings she took in her afterlife is her penance for what she did on that day. It was self-destructive because while she may not say it out loud a part of her feels like she deserves to be treated badly after what she has done. And it was only after they saved her - that she begins to start moving on.
When Xie Lian started to become a God that was hated, he was also self-destructive and feeling like maybe he did deserve it. It was during this time that Hua Cheng still in his mortal lifetime declared that he will never forget Xie Lian. While this may or may not have influenced Xie Lian into moving on from any past mistakes, we do know that he may have not confronted any negative feelings enough that he still has a mental breakdown when the truth is revealed to Lang Qiangqiu. And so Hua Cheng provided Xie Lian that space and person to not be alone while confronting these feelings and thoughts all the while also reassuring Xie Lian that he is not a bad person for what he has done.
Speaking of being viewed as a bad person, we also come to the flaw of Lang Qiangqiu's perspective on Xie Lian. Both Lang Qiangqiu and Hue Cheng admired Xie Lian for saving them and wanted to be like their savior. But there is a difference: Lang Qiangqiu despite having more interactions with Xie Lian as his student, grew up idolizing him so much that he did not notice that the image he made of Xie Lian in his head is either a savior who could do no wrong or the traitor who killed his family and all of their lessons and experiences together were lies so that Xie Lian could kill his entire family. This simplistic reduction of Xie Lian which had carried out even in Lang Qiangqiu's life as a martial God, is not the true Xie Lian who was somewhere in between. Seeing him as nothing more than a savior prevents him from thinking of the times when Xie Lian was the killer rather than the savior. And seeing him as nothing more than a traitor would make him blind in the things that Xie Lian was genuinely trying to teach him to make him better than generations before.
Meanwhile Hue Cheng only had a few but significant interactions with Xie Lian that doesn't simply reduce Xie Lian as either one or the other. He knows enough to know that Xie Lian is altruistic and would do anything that would make the world better. Whether that was disrupting a procession in his honor to save a bandaged child from being killed from a fall or what seems to be the massacre of the Yong An royal family with only the heir remaining, he knows Xie Lian has enough reason to do the things that he did, though he may not know all the facts of the story. And to talk with the God he loved when said God was feeling hopeless and was in despair because people now hate him and are destroying his temples made Hue Cheng realize that even Gods feels remorse, upset, tired, and hopeless. I think this is the moment that Hue Cheng truly becomes devoted to Xie Lian. I forgot who in the Hualian tumblr community said it but I have to agree that this very human moment of Xie Lian being in despair is the catalyst in Hue Cheng's life to be the person whom the God he loves could turn to when he needs support from someone. And what better support could a God have than the most devoted follower that would become the most dangerous and notorious Ghost King among the four calamities. Him being a ghost is also the very thing that ensures Xie Lian continues to exist. These two interactions he has had was enough to not paint a simple picture of Xie Lian in Hue Cheng's mind which allowed him more than Lang Qiangqiu more contemplation on Hue Cheng's part on who the actual Xie Lian is while also allowing room to get to know him more.
Add this to how he is disgusted by how Heaven is for allowing Xie Lian to be taken for granted and which made him realize that beneath the beautiful veneer it is still a system which seems to hinder rather than actually help both Gods and mortals alike - being the most powerful and dangerous Ghost to warrant being a threat to Heaven truly was the best option for Hue Cheng.
And I know this has already been said but it is beautiful that even now in the early stages of their relationship both of them wants to be there for each other. Xie Lian was always there in some form or another for Hue Cheng and Hue Cheng is always there for Xie Lian no matter what disguise or form he takes. They both complement each other's weaknesses. Xie Lian tends to overthink and sometimes doesn't allow himself to truly feel because of his religious sect. Hue Cheng while also calculating tends to take action more because of either efficiency or boredom. Xie Lian apologizing to Hue Cheng for giving him half-truths and thinking about the damages he caused while Hue Cheng apologizes for wounding Xie Lian was so beautiful in that they both love each other to think they deserve retribution from the other when it is so obvious they want their relationship to be repaired.
Hue Cheng is the one being that Xie Lian could truly be himself with and Xie Lian is the one being that keeps Hue Cheng living even though he himself is no longer mortal. And that is such a beautiful love story.

This isn't something I've really done much since I started this blog but I really wanted to discuss this weekās TGCF episode.
This is your spoiler warning!!
Heaven official's blessing season 2, episode 6 spoilers but there are also discussions of the respective scenes from volume 2 so if you haven't finished reading the novel, I'd suggest maybe not reading this post.
For context, I saw a user on twitter discuss how the donghua has been adapting Hua Cheng's display of emotions towards Xie Lian.
Source
I also saw another user discuss the difference between how the novel/audio drama and the donghua have been showing Hua Cheng expressing emotions.
(I can't share the source as the OP is now private on twitter)
While I haven't actually listened to the audio drama and I'm only on my first re-read of TGCF, these posts inspired me and I have thoughts and opinions that I need to share before I implode (one day itāll happen I swear).
The scene the posters are talking about is after hcg saves xl from the heavenly Xianle palace, where they talk about what happened at paradise manor (aka xl apologising for burning down the armoury and lying to hcg about the earth master and hcg apologising for hurting xlās arm).
In the donghua, we see hcg very obviously upset. He appears obviously and genuinely very sad about having hurt xl, even with the whole incident having been an accident. The distress in his eyes and voice is evident and clear-cut, seeming perhaps even a bit childish. In contrast, when reading this scene in the novel, while hcg definitely comes across upset, his distress appears a bit more calm and collected and he instead truly seems like a responsible adult who made a mistake and is sincerely apologetic for it to xl.
I believe that thereās multiple reasons why the dongua team chose to show hcgās emotions in the way that they did. In my opinion, a reason why they couldāve chosen to do it this way is because of censorship. Now hear me out; clearly as a western fan I canāt speak much on Chinese censorship as Iām not highly knowledgable on the subject. However, Iād like to believe that the producing team is trying to work around the censorship laws in their own way. By making hcgās emotions a little more over-the-top and obvious, itās a lot easier for us as the viewer, especially queer fans that might understand queer dynamics better than others, to see and pick up on the subtext of what those exaggerated emotions mean while never having to be said out loud. And yes, we could argue that for those of us who have read the novel, itās easier to recognise those subtle moments of vulnerability even if hcgās reaction was made as ambiguous as it is in the book, because we have a lot more context. We have to remind ourselves that Hualianās love story is never gonna be shown in the donghua in the same as the novel and people who are new to the story won't pick up on their relationship as easily.
As someone who handāt heard of TGCF until Netflix licensed the donghua in my region (in 2021 I think?), I actually highly appreciate this difference in hcgās character in the donghua. And while I donāt appreciate queerbaiting, watching season 1 made me search for the original source material and ended up with 8 very expensive books on my shelf (it took me 2 years to find volume 2 in stock somewhereā¦. 2 YEARS because I refuse to buy from amazon). San Lang (specifically referring to hcgās form in volume 1 or season 1) is definitely slightly more aloof and energetic than hcg in his real form, so I do believe that his adaptation in season 1 was a lot more true to the source than season 2 seems to be.
My personal opinion is that, we need to view the donghua with a little more leniency as they have limits to the scenes they will be adapting later on (if the donghua doesnāt get dropped. Let us all pray together) and they have to make some things a little more obvious (but still no homo) to keep as much of the gay factor as they can without getting, you know, arrested. At the end of the day, it comes down to us what we prefer to consume and I donāt think thereās anything wrong with people preferring one over the other. It's valid to prefer hcg in the novels and it's valid to also enjoy hcg's donghua adaptation, even if he's different and not completely true to the OG material.
Now when it comes to the whole āmaking xl seem oblivious thingāā¦. The jury is still out on this one Iām afraid. This was the final scene of the latest episode meaning, we donāt actually know how theyāre gonna adapt the following scenes and this could very heavily affect the way xl reacts from here on. An adaptation is just that and like mentioned before, the donghua team has to make decisions on how to adapt things due to censorship. And at the end of the day, I think this is an interesting take on xlās character as one of the biggest parts of his character is how he struggles to accept love and care from other people so one can argue thatā¦ He actually is oblivious in this scene? Especially at this point in the story considering heās known hcg for like, a week, 2 weeks max (do not quote me on that, I havenāt actually calculated, I am lazy. Point is, he hasnāt known him for very long at this point in time). And while I would for sure be a bit disappointed if he still is presented like this later on in the story, weāre still too early into it to criticise the donghua over this and future scenes that havenāt even been touched yet. Itās not in any way fair to base our opinions on the upcoming scenes on a singular 2 minute clip of Hualianās interaction.
So, I have said my peace. Please remember that everything Iāve discussed is purely my opinion and not fact, so take this post with a grain of salt. Iād actually love to discuss this further with people so please send asks if you have anything to add!
(This is also another good post to read about the censorship stuff I talked about in this post. I like how this user phrased it.)
Once again, thank you for reading a (lengthy for once) ramble!

2023... but told in my hyperfixations
Just a post that allows me to track all of my various hyperfixations that have helped me pass this grueling and busy year
HADES (Supergiant Game)
I played this game for at least 6 months non-stop. I was obsessed with everything about it, from story, gameplay all the way to relationships and dialogue. I was ESPECIALLY whipped for PatroChilles and ThanZag. My major fixation spurs were January and February as well as May. I still play Hades when I need to decompress, I have almost 200h in it and I have 100% achievements which is my first time ever
Captive Prince series by C. S. Pacat
I read this trilogy during February and when I tell you I was smacked in the face by how good it was. From intrigue, plot and political drama all the way to relationships. But ofc I was mostly blown away by the relationship between Damen and Laurent, like, I DID NOT EXPECT to love their relationship so much. I WAS IN SHAMBLES BECAUSE OF THEIR GENTLE LOVE. Couldn't recover for weeks
KINGDOM - Dystopia
One of the things I was really looking forward to. The whole album blew me away and the Japanese aesthetic was top notch. How much my boys have grown, I was in shambles
GENSHIN IMPACT!!!!!!!
What can I say, I ENDED UP LOOKING INTO IT. I didn't start officially playing it yet, but I went through the lore, studied all characters and their relationships and ofc got sucked into shipping side of the fandom (it's not that hard to intrigue me with that)
I was specifically OBSESSED with DainKae (Dainsleif x Kaeya), XiaoAether, HaiKaveh and CynoNari. And as new patches come by and Fointaine was introduced, my fixation periods always come back with new content. And right now, I'm all about Wriollette. Fixation started in July and has been coming and going as the new content was introduced (when Furina's backstory was introduced, I was bawling)
RED, WHITE AND ROYAL BLUE MOVIE!!!!
I was prepared for this movie since last year BUT THE ACTUAL THING BLEW ME AWAY! I was so happy to watch it finally, I LOVED the chemistry and even though I have a couple of grievances with it, I think the whole message was portrayed nicely! I won't tell you how many times I've watched the movie, it's literally my comfort media. The main fixation period was before the release and entire August.
Avatar: The Way of Water
I was very late with my watch BUT BOY WAS I OBSESSED AND HIT LIKE A TRUCK WITH IT. The movie had everything I expected it to have and it really made me feel a lot of things. I was so devastated over Teyam, I had SO MANY theories about other three sequels and honestly, I'm still not over how good that movie is. And now, that I know the third sequel is coming around Christmas of 2025, I know the first part of 2026 will be marked by that movie alone. Major fixation period was end of August and ENTIRE September
KINGDOM - Coup d'Etat
Every time Kingdom has a comeback I go into brainrot, deal with it. This comeback was special because it was the last part of their History of Kingdom series and we got SO MANY information on their lore that also prepared us for Season 2! I cannot tell you how insufferable I'll become when the next series of albums starts. As far as this album goes, though, I had no complaints, another non-skip album and Coup d'Etat was a perfect showcase of their growth in the last 3 years. So yeah, majority of my October and November was occupied by them.
And finally.... HEAVEN OFFICIAL'S BLESSING (TGCF)
This story pounced on me like a tiger from an ambush and honestly, I'm not complaining. I know all spoilers, I'm SO OBSESSED with HuaLian and am currently on the 2nd book. I think I'll be even more obsessed when I live though all the important moments though books and I CAN GUARANTEE my interest will once again peak when I start watching donghua (I'm waiting for season 2 to finish so I can watch both Chinese and English, oh, and Japanese will be watched eventually). And, ofc, I'm planning to buy all eight English volumes!!

Finally got my actual official ADHD diagnosis a few days ago after living in 99% sure land for YEARS, so to celebrate it is time for a
State of the Blog,
I guess.
So.
I joined tumblr to follow Sims 2 CC makers. So far, so good. Then Twitter's descent into madness began and I started following a bunch of other people and then I started watching CQL.
And it ripped out my heart and soul and tore them into a thousand pieces and then sort of smooshed them back together only to put them through the meat grinder all over again. And. I felt like I was never going to be okay again. It has been 3+ months and I'm still Not Okay about any of it.
Anyway, I was aware there was a whole world of CQL fandom and C-drama and danmei lit, so I very firmly told myself I would NOT go down that rabbit hole.
...
So obviously, since I watched The Untamed, I have
read MDZS
watched Love Between Fairy and Devil (which is SO cheesy but I loved it a lot and it cured my CQL-induced depression)
watched Untamed: The Living Dead
watched a bunch of BTS and Untamed cast vids on YT because how??? is anyone??? allowed to be??? this pretty??? pretty much the ENTIRE cast seriously it's unreal (also the Untamed Boys ep 5 scavenger hunt is hilarious)
started watching the Heaven Official's Blessing donghua, read TGCF Vol. 1, then finished the donghua (well, the available season of it)
started watching the MDZS donghua
wrote down a whole long list of other C-dramas to watch / webnovels to read
watched Legend of Fei and read a Bandits fan translation because the show is ... confusing - all in all very "meh" but ok to watch while knitting, I enjoyed Zhou Fei's outfits, and hey, it has this:
finished reading TGCF
started SVSSS
started reading fanfiction. Tons of it. I have not read fanfiction since high-school but apparently I needed more ... angst? And also fix-its, after all the trauma that MXTX serves up.
re-started learning Japanese because my brain now really wants to learn Mandarin but I've made a deal with myself that I won't be allowed to attempt that until I make some decent progress with Japanese
So. Doing GREAT on the whole rabbit hole front.
Anyway, since I've now apparently decided (accidentally started) to actually use this blog for more than Sims stuff, it is as good a place as any to put stuff I don't want to put on Twitter. But, for the moment, apart from this lengthy hello, I think I will remain the person at the tumblr party who's kinda only just got there and doesn't know anyone and will keep lurking in the corner nursing their drink until they find an opening where they can join a conversation without offending/off-putting/making a fool of themselves (or until someone more extroverted takes pity on them). Whoop.
Bonus soul-soothing cat love:

Not sure if this counts, but I considered watching Frieren but a recent spoiler from a friend makes me less interested in itā¦ Which is kind of fine since when it comes to anime, I probably wouldāve prioritized The Apothecary Diaries anyway ahaha.
And Iām not sure when Iāll find the time for some stuff (I may just continue absorbing it through fandom osmosis) like Boruto and Precureā¦
I also fully admit sometimes I just stop watching things part-way through not because I donāt love the thing, but because I either donāt have time or I didnāt want it to end. š

And some Erha fics! Including the final two chapters for the Chu Wanning birthday fic. šŖ
I also hope to start some doodles/drabbles for Bingqiu week
And maybe a few more OC drawings/(re)designs? I did a lot right before the OC-tober event, but itās been long enough Iāve gone without drawing I can feel my fingers itchiiiiing
Current Obsession:
Oh definitely some manhua, like See You My King, My Lovely Troublemaker, Donāt Say You Love Me, Kiss the Abyss, Hidden Love, You Are My Desire, I Ship My Rival x Me, Blemishing the Contaminated, and so on! i want to get into mdzs, but i have no idea where to start or in what order or even where! help?
ur asking the most chaotic mdzs consumer because i did everything out of order š after watching cql i read the last 20 chapters of the novel, and then season 3 of the audio drama and THEN went back to read/listen from the start gfhdjfhdjshf.Ā
thereās pros and cons of every adaption and ppl have different tastes depending on if you prefer written, audio, or visual media so iāll make an overly simplified list of pros and cons/where to access them (iām guessing youāve watched cql but in case you havenāt iāll still include it in this list :3)
iām not galaxy brained enough to write intricate meta about the differences of each adaption so bare with me š
novelĀ pros: the original material so itās the truest form of mdzs, complete, very complex and enthralling plot about morality, not censored, covers really dark themes extremely well cons: the only complete english translation is occasionally a bit uncomfy to read (ignore the authorās notes lol), the author writes terrible sex scenes </3 where to read it: full english translation can be read here
donghua pros: ITāS SO PRETTY, like the animation studioās style is breathtaking, also closely follows novel canon with some minor alterations due to censorship and time constraints, lwjās voice actor is the same as cql! cons: itās still incomplete, it can be a bit hard to follow in the beginning if u havenāt read the novel where to watch it: for free on the wetv appĀ Ā or on youtubeĀ
donghua q pros: itās currently airing!!, itās the cutest thing u will ever watch, theyāre all 5 minute bonus stories, itās adorable cons: there are none where to watch it: for free on the wetv app or on youtube
manhua pros: follows the novel almost identically except for the few times when censorship struck (the artist still gave us the kiss tho, bless them), weekly updates every monday morning!!, the chibi panels r always so cute cons: still ongoing and probably wonāt be finished for a year or so, can be hard to follow if u havenāt read the novel, the official english translation is a bit awkward (fan translations r better but idk if thereās any up to date ones) where to read it: the original can be read hereĀ (only first 25 chaps r free), the official english translation can be read here for free but thereās also a paywall (as of rn chapters 1-99 r free)
audio drama pros: complete!!, follows the novel plot,Ā extremely well produced!!, wwxās voice actor is the same as cql!, has heaps of extras, everything about the production quality is just *chefs kiss*, the audio drama is so underrated as an adaption and idk why bc itās so well done cons: it can be a bit strange at first to listen while reading subs (if u donāt understand chinese) but u get used to it, the fansubs can get a bit annoying during certain scenesĀ where to listen to it: the official version can be found on the missevan app (no subs and gotta pay), and all the fansubs can be found in this discord!, heaps of the extras r also on youtube bonus bc i love the audio drama: listen to this and also this extra.... itās domestic asmr and what convinced me to listen to the ad properly š„ŗ
drama pros: completed very easy to get into, very pretty, probably the easiest version to get into for someone who hasnāt read cnovels before cons: itās the adaption with the biggest plot changes (due to various forms of censorship) where to watch it: netflix (paid), wetv, viki, youtube (all free)
drama ~special edition~ pros: occasionally contains extra shots that didnāt make the original cut, the ending is edited differently just to spice things up cons: they condensed 50 episodes into 20, i still donāt understand the purpose of why it exists ????Ā where to watch it: wetv and youtube
is this list helpful in the slightest? probably not š
tldr; thereās a version for everyone no matter what your favourite medium is
#i still need to finish the donghua i have to watch season 2#i really need to binge it one day bc i'm obsessed with the art design#and the manhua i kinda keep up with weekly?? but haven't read the translation since may š#Anonymous#this took me an hour to compile and then i got distracted by the audio drama extras i linked ghfjdfdhu

ALL SAINTS STREET LINK PIT
First of, the thread I've made about the VIP and non-VIP schedule. For VIP there's only one episode left (36) while for non-VIP there are two! (35 and 36).
Then, official info about the two first seasons of the donghua being available for free on bilibili
And the link to said bili! You can watch seasons 1 and 2 (episodes 1 to 24) officially, for free, without ads and without zone lock.
Which leads me to give the link to the Tencent with seasons 1 to 3 (episodes 1 to 36), maybe ads (idk I use a adblocker), zone lock (use a VPN or unblock youku) but still for free !
But since we have the donghua, now it is time to bring back the manhua!!! There also is a VIP system but except for the last three chapters published the rest is free!! (Basically, the three last chapters always are under VIP, so it continues to be released but you need to pay to be able to be up to date with the latest chapters)
Now that you have all of the official medias, here are the official twitters, with the English and Japanese ones!
Now that we have all of the official accounts, have the non-official bits, such as the carrd about the FENZ franchise in English and in French!
Have also the links to the wikis in English and in French too.
AND TO FINISH
Two fan discord servers, one in English by the asslators
Et un autre en franƧais par @lupintraduction
Also the blog on which I update y'all on the big changes I make on the different wikis I'm in charge of.
Oh and,, Twitter version of the thread

Finally I got to finish xie wang zhui qi season 3. I hope there's season 4 because I need more nangong x suo luo
Ok sometimes I feel like I'm the only person who watches this donghua. I got frustrated because the episodes went on VIP and I was like why š š„²š¤§
I only downloaded iqiyi because of this donghua. I don't have the luxury to pay for another subscription since I'm already paying for other music and video streaming platform so adding iqiyi to the list is just too much for my little salary.
But I got invested in watching the past seasons of xie wang zhui qi when it was still free to watch. So I waited for all the 16 eps to be completed and then I shamelessly asked my mom to lend me her tablet so that I can finish the remaining episodes in one go. (I found out she paid for the VIP for her korean shows) I felt so embarass watching donghua on her personal tablet. But what choice do I have I cannot sleep without knowing the ending and it was so worth it plus I got to listen to the special ending song in ep 16. I first heard of it during the last episode of season 2 as a BGM it got stuck on my head ever since but I don't have a way to find out the song since donghua music is sooo hard to find in the net. UGH the struggle of loving donghua why oh why is it hard to find contents.
Anyway I enjoyed the show. Same as meng qi shi shen. Can't wait for season 3 of that donghua too just praying that its future episodes will still be free have mercy to average income earners. š

*zooms in*
I always mention this whenever new fans come pouring into donghua asking if a new season is confirmed (Iāve seen it happen with Scissor Seven, Link Click, All Saints Street, Tian Guan Ci Fu, etc), that generally speaking, donghua donāt really cancel their shows!!
Unless a social media halts completelyāso for example, no more art every holidayāand merch is no longer produced, you generally donāt have to worry.
There doesnāt seem to be much of a culture of going āshow confirmed for next season!ā based on watch numbers for whatever reason.
Similarly, donghua also donāt seem to rush production quite as much as the west or Japan. Iām not sure if itās just because China is so huge and consumers and the production companies (Tencent and Bilibili etc) have tons of other series to pick from to showcase and fill slots, so theyāre not as worried about trying to get a donghua out asap. Studios tend to take their time and new seasons only get an official date of release when theyāre closer to being finished. I also assume it has to do with the fact most of Chinaās media is made for the web rather than TV, so release schedules arenāt as tight.
Which is also why I encourage people not to panic if their favourite donghua hasnāt officially announced the next season. Like Tian Guan Ci Fu; itās so hugely popular and still releasing ads and merch that itās quite likely to get another season.
Additionally, Iāve seen donghua come back after hiatuses of like 5 years (Beryl and Sapphire, Cinderella Chef, Psychic Princess), so sometimes even when hope seems lost, thereās still a glimmer of hope!
The only time you may need to worry it seems is when itās a danmei donghua, mostly due to the possibilities of tightening censorship (Scumbag System is probably the biggest example here but far from the only one), so yes, Tian Guan Ci Fu is more at risk, but they already made sure to air season 2 outside of China so I donāt see why they canāt do that for season 3. Plus if nothing else, All Saints Street at least is not a danmei.
And yeah Fei Ren Zai is definitely the most popular one of the three back in China, as seen in its really cool merchāthereās so many and I am so sad I cannot get more šābut All Saints Street has definitely proven to appeal more to westerners because itā¦well, stars westerners/western supernatural creatures lol. But also because itās got MTJJ behind it, the creator of The Legend of Luo Xiaohei, which also has insanely pretty animation.
As for You Shou Yan, yeah you can watch it on the Bilibili YouTube channel!! Thatās the fun thing about Bilibiliātheir YouTube pretty consistently uploads their series and subs them. Series are also free while airing, and go behind the YouTube membership paywall only after they finish the season.
Tencent actually also has a YouTube channel for their animation, but they donāt always have English subs there, and Tencent series are usually harder to access overall.
All Saints Streetās situation is a bit more awkward because from what Iāve heard, its Japanese dub is made by a company that owns or is related to Crunchyroll, so Crunchyroll seems to only have (?) the Japanese dubāeither that, or it only promotes the Japanese dub. If you want to watch it in the original Chinese, you may have to rely on fans, especially if you want English subs.
This is a frustrating habit of Crunchyrollās overall akfnksjd. They often seem to promote the Japanese dubs way more than the Chinese originals (eg with an Arknights donghua, All Saints Street, and even Tian Guan Ci Fu has gotten this treatmentānot in Crunchyroll promoting the Japanese dub more, but in focusing way more on the English dub). The only series Iāve seen Crunchyroll be kind of chill about the original Chinese version of is Link Click, but even thatās had its awkward moments.
I wonder if Link Click has better luck in this regard both because itās a more famous donghua but also because it was actually first licensed by Funimation before Crunchyroll consumed Funimation (Bilibili used to have an exclusive deal with Funimation)ā¦ In fact, I havenāt really seen Crunchyroll promote the other donghua that Funimation has (including Can Ci Pin and Lie Huo Jiao Chou).
And hell, if you donāt have an English or Japanese dub, youāre completely out of luck; Crunchyroll got X&Y aka Aiyouās Secret Room but never even posted a fucking trailer for it. I only found out because some Crunchyroll users started posting about it on YouTube, and I discovered the Brazilian Crunchyroll channel at least shared a trailer, but not the main (English) Crunchyroll channel itself. š
Which is why even when Iām glad donghua get picked up in the west, I am admittedly a little wary of how itāll get treated. Even Scissor Seven, which has seen some love from Netflix for the original Chinese version, still mostly promotes the English dub and most of its fans think the English dub is better because itās āmore emotiveā (this is a lie, but Iād have to get into tonal differences between Chinese media and western media where western media prefers a more crass, edgy, and even loud style, but thatās besides the point).
Anyway, besides when Bilibili has a deal with another western streaming service like Crunchyroll (because then the show does not go on YouTube so as to not harm the streaming numbers I guess), I appreciate Bilibiliās model of uploading donghua on YouTube haha.
Tencent has some too. Like Fei Ren Zai iirc is actually also on Tencentās animation YouTube channelāI just donāt know how complete it is or whether itās subbed.
Ok so do you think that there will one day be a season 5 though?
I have no doubt there will be a season 5 in the future, anon! The new three volumes were published recently, merch for it keeps getting released, and nothing seems to indicate WSJ is doing so badly it would get cancelled. Well, if you really want me to get negative: WSJ is the least popular of the three main webcomics FENZ publishes by a wide margin. Here is an example of the engagement from the latest comic releases for FRZ, YSY and WSJ respectively.
However, I think WSJ importance to FENZ goes beyond its local popularity: with the donghua WSJ became their big series for the foreign market, specifically Japan. I would attribute this the donghua's unique style and the fact that western myths and monsters are more appealing outside of China (Watching Fei Ren Zai atm and I have been forced to learn Chinese myths and history at the end of every episode!). I think it's pretty clear that only because of ASS's success in Japan a Japanese dub of Fei Ren Zai to be released! Sorry for my previous ignorant joke, honestly, I have been enjoying FRZ. If you haven't, do give it a try!
In short: Season 5 (and probably beyond) is still happening. The studios that work on it: FERN (they do everything including animation and is the lead studio for the adaptations for both FRZ & YSY) and HMCH (the lead studio for WSJ's adaptation and, as I talked about in the previous asks, have their own projects going on) have been busy, so it will take a while.
Also.... I just learned that you can just watch YSY (Fabulous Beasts) on YouTube? With subs? Might be worldwide?!?! You have to become a member of the YouTube Bilibili channel but at least for me it's really cheap (under 5 dollars per month, can cancel any time and they do have a lot of other donghua there). Dammit. Why can't Tencent do this as well?!?! I hate broadcasting/streaming companies so much... Well check it out if you are interested: ćFabulous Beastsćtheme song sung by Luo TianyićJoin to Watch latestć (youtube.com)

Hello unforth! Thank you for your wonderful blog, and the the untamed art blog!! I followed you years ago for destiel, and you were one of the people that got me into the untamed. I watched it last summer and have been binging various cdramas ever since!! I had a question for you about reading. After watching the untamed I read the novel, and didnāt enjoy it as much as I thought I would. I think youāre someone who prefers the show, but if not, sorry if Iām remembering wrongā¦ hoping you understand. I want to try reading other novels but I found the romance in mdzs to be kinda off. I guess Iām wondering if you have a recommendation for the best novel youāve read so far? It would be great if itās one with fanfic but if not Iām still curious to try! I hope this didnāt come off as rude about the untamed, itās just a personal preference. Thanks in advance, and thanks again for all your work in fandom!
Howdy! *waves*
You have not misremembered, I definitely prefer the Untamed to the novel of MDZS (and I'm with you, no shade on people with different preferences, of course!). I also didn't enjoy the novel of MDZS as much as I thought I would, though I think some of that was because I read the Exiled Rebels Scanalations translation which - again, no shade, translating that was a HUGE job and kudos to them - but I do here from native speakers that some questionable translation choices were made, which can detract from some people's enjoyment of the novel (and can enhance other people's, it just depends how those translation choices relate to each person's personal likes and dislikes).
Now, I can tell you what I've read and what I've thought of each one, happily - I don't know what turned you off about MDZS specifically, beyond an aspect of the relationship dynamic, so it'll be hard for me to say which of these might appeal to you more? But, here's a list of which danmei novels I've read, and my opinion. The list is shorter than you'd think - danmei novels are long and I read slow, lol.
Note that all of these end happy, for various definitions of "happy," and the main ship is canon in all of them. Also note that I tried to avoid spoilers, but sometimes it's hard to even talk about the ship dynamic without some mild spoilers.
These are (roughly) in the order I've read them; I just finished the last a few days ago. All art is by the official artists, but I'm not always sure what their names are, sorry - I've tried to figure them out for my art blogs but it's REALLY hard.
1. Mo Dao Zu Shi, by MXTX.
(since I'm writing this post for you, and you're already familiar with it, I'm not putting in TW and plot)
My take: I figure knowing my opinion of MDZS will help you assess all this? There are things I loved about MDZS, including the book, but MDZS is still obviously trying to figure out pacing. Whereas in SVSSS, the storyline doesn't always flow that smoothly and the ending is rushed, in MDZS in my opinion the biggest issue is that she clearly didn't plan some things ahead. For example, Miangmian and Wen Ning are both introduced within a few pages of when they'll be needed to Do Shit. It shows that she hadn't quite worked everything out as she was going, and every once in a while was like, "shit shit I need a character for this thing" and hastily added them. The plot itself is better paced, though, though I could have wished for a less talky denouement. When it was the only one I read, I also often thought, "this author doesn't understand consent," and, "this author has kinks I don't share." Now that I've read all three of her books, I completely retract the first one. MXTX absolutely understands consent, and was intentionally playing with it in MDZS. Not sure if the evidence of that got lost in translation, or what, but...yeah.
Relationship Dynamic: ...the second of those opinions, I still kinda feel. The consensual non-con is just not really my thing, like I'm okay with it in small doses? And I don't love some aspects of Lan Wangji's domineering attitudes and Wei Wuxian's act of bare tolerating it. And don't get me wrong, now that I'm more familiar with her work, I think it was an intentional writing choice and I also think they're both largely roleplaying it a lot of the time...but I still don't personally enjoy it much.
2. Scum Villain Self-Saving System, by MXTX.
Genre: modern transmigration into a fantasy xianxia world.
Where to find it: English translation by BC Novels | donghua season 1
Trigger warnings for: graphic descriptions of suffering, non-con of the "fuck or die" variety, and body horror...I can't think of anything else rn?)
Plot: SVSSS is MXTX's first novel, and is a satire of classic stag harem novels. Shen Yuan, the protagonist and half the main ship, is reading a serialized web novel by "Airplane Shooting Towards the Sky" about a demon named Luo Binghe who has a harem of over 3,000 women and has done all kinds of ghastly awful things. He hates this novel but has read all, like, 3 million words of it or something, and trolls every chapter...until one gets him so angry that he dies...and then he wakes up in the book right around when the book starts, in the body of one of the early antagonists, a cultivator named Shen Qingqiu who abuses a young, innocent Luo Binghe physically and emotionally and, ultimately, is horribly tortured to death. Shen Yuan, in Shen Qingqiu's body, thus sets out to not be horribly tortured to death by Luo Binghe. Hijinks ensue.
My Take: In terms of my opinion of it...SVSSS secured for me that MXTX is a much more brilliant author than I thought when I'd only read MDZS. She understands tropes and subverts them brilliantly throughout the story, and from a writing standpoint, I was impressed with her. However, from a plot standpoint...she's got all the ideas but hasn't, imo, yet figured out how exactly to bring them all together. The pacing is off at times, and the ending felt abrupt to me. It's also the only danmei I've read where I ship a side ship more than the primary one (which is, of course, Shen Yuan (as Shen Qingqiu)/Luo Binghe. (also, oops...I read SVSSS after TGCF and just put them in the wrong order, oh well, not gonna change it now.)
Relationship Dynamic: In terms of relationship weirdness...it's hard to sort in that regard, because, like, it's supposed to be weird? I think it's a really interest book but I'm not sure I'd recommend it in your situation. Bingqiu's main dynamic is...uh...tolerance and obsession? They're kinda hard to describe. Shen Yuan often seems like he's just kinda putting up with Luo Binghe, whereas Luo Binghe is...god. So hard to describe, lmao. He's a big clumsy ox in a museum full of porcelain dishes and he really, really loves his Shizun. (also note that Shen Qingqiu is Luo Binghe's teacher. They don't get together until after they're not master/student, but if that's not your thing, another reason to avoid.)
3. Tian Guan Ci Fu, by MXTX.
(art is by Starember)
Genre: historical China (loosely), xianxia (note that I'm still figuring out exactly how stuff gets classified so sorry if I get one wrong, but I think I kinda get it???)
Where to Access It: English Translation by the astonishing yummysuika | manhua (this is an official translation by Bilibili! It's a few chapters behind the actual release, but still...) | donghua season 1 is on Netflix | a live action adaptation is juuuuust getting started on script reading and filing
Trigger warnings for: MCD, temporary MCD, body horror, graphic violence, epic levels of mind fuckery, uh...genocide?...again, racism/colorism, probably other stuff, sorry, I can't take as long as I'd like to for this post so I'm not being as thorough as I oughta be.
Plot: TGCF is about Xie Lian, an 800 year old man, and it commences at the moment when, unexpectedly, he ascends to godhood...for the third time. Unfortunately, when he ascends, he accidentally does some damage in Heaven, and he has to repay that, so he gets sent back to earth to deal with a ghost who's been causing some problems. Hijinks ensue...and then fucktons of angst ensue...then more hijinks...then more angst...and basically it broke my heart like four times and I am grateful for it every day? The main ship is Xie Lian and a ghost named Hua Cheng, but it's hard to even talk about without some spoilers because of some identity shenanigans. (they're VERY mildly identity shenanigans, but still).
My Take: So, you asked what my favorite of the danmei novels I've read is? It's TGCF. TGCF is one of my favorite novels ever, and it has a growing fandom, a donghua that's on Netflix, and a live action that's just starting to film. TGCF is the culmination of the skills MXTX developed through her first two works, imo. She clearly plotted it out all from the start, and while Book 1 especially often seems kind of random - lots of elements are introduced and then kinda...apparently...forgotten? And never explained? But she actually DOES bring it ALL together and it's flat-out masterful. I'm a big fan, obviously.
Relationship Dynamic: it again depends on your preferences and what you didn't like about MDZS, and there's no way to talk about it without spoilers, so consider yourselves warned. Xie Lian ascended to godhood first at the age of 17, and right around then he also saved the life of a 10 year old boy...and that boy is Hua Cheng. Hua Cheng is a follower of Xie Lian's, in that Xie Lian is literally a god, and Hua Cheng is literally one of his followers. However, they're separated for almost 800 years, so the age difference is largely irrelevant, and while some people complain about Hua Cheng's behavior being stalkery and obsessive, I honestly think they're dead wrong. It's more like when you read a celebrity/fan AU, and it starts weird, and then they really genuinely fall in love. Like, the fan may have been in love the whole time, and how they felt about the celebrity before they really met might feel slightly ooky, but it's how they act AFTER they meet their idol that matters more, and...yeah, Hua Cheng is great, they're both great, antis fight me. Xie Lian is easily one of my favorite characters EVER, he is all my favorite tropes in one horribly, wonderfully fucked up martyristic idealistic sweet kind laid back package. I would kill for him, lmao. In terms of their relationship dynamic...they love and respect each other? There's really nothing that weird about it other than the aspects of the "fan" Hua Cheng that get revealed over time - and he's always terrified that when Xie Lian realizes what a fanboy he was, Xie Lian will be upset or disgusted, but of course Xie Lian never is. They adore each other. It's glorious. Highly recommend. :D There's also no explicit content in TGCF (unlike MXTX's other two books).
4. The Husky and His White Cat Shizun (aka 2ha) by Meatbun Doesn't Eat Meat.
Genre: original world, xianxia, time travel, dimension hopping, it's so many things, 2ha is so hard to describe lmao
Where to Access it: English Translation by the amazing yummysuika (things are complicated, though, and it's not finished) | a manhua is in the works and should be out this year | a live action called "Hao Yixing" or "Immortality" is already filmed and could theoretically air literally any time cause it's completely ready, but when will it actually come? Who knows!
Trigger warnings: all of them. Literally. MCD, temporary MCD, murder, suicide, suicidal ideation, suicide attempt, rape/non-con, abuse, manipulation, gas lighting, torture, graphic violence, body horror, literal graphic onscreen horrible blood murder of a small child (I had to skip that chapter), teacher/student relationship sort of but not exactly, probably other stuff, this book is dark as fuck, and a lot of these tags apply to behavior of one half of the main ship toward the other, but...it's complicated, and there are reasons things happen, and those reasons aren't "well they're just a bad person."
Plot: This is another one that's hard to describe because there's sooooo much mind fuckery going on, but I'll try. 2ha is about Mo Ran, who rises to be the Emperor of the World, Taxian Jun, but slaughtering all who oppose him...and who is so miserable that he commits suicide, only to wake up in his 16 year old body. This is pretty much perfect from Mo Ran's point of view, because he's gone back so far that the love of his life, his fellow disciple Shi Mei, is still alive. He has a chance to fix everything that went wrong, starting with preventing his awful evil Shizun, Chu Wanning, from letting Shi Mei die.
Spoilers: the main ship in this book is Mo Ran/Chu Wanning.
Hijinks do NOT ensue. There are no hijinks in 2ha. It is all pain all the time (but I swear it ends happy).
My Take: ...well, from a structural standpoint there are some pacing issues. The book is incredibly long (over 300 chapters, over 1 million words) and there are definitely some chunks that could just be excised and it'd still be fine. However, other than that, it's pretty amazing and absolutely masterful how it's plotted. As a reader you'll spend 100+ chapters thinking you know what's going on, and who the good guys are, and who the bad guys are, and how they relate to each other...and then Meatbun starts in on revealing what's ACTUALLY going on and she then spends 200 chapters repeatedly punching you in the face! Like, I went in knowing a LOT of spoilers, because the tags were so dark that I felt that for my mental health it was important I have a general idea what was going on, and I STILL ended up sobbing my eyes out (and I am NOT an easy crier and don't usually cry at books) over something I knew was coming.
Relationship Dynamic: That's about the only thing that the title accurately conveys about this book. "The Husky and His White Cat Shizun," sounds so soft and fluffy, right? That's how they get you, ha. But, Mo Ran is absolutely a big dumb husky who wants to do the right thing (well, sometimes he does) but just completely fails depressingly often. When he sees someone he likes come in the front door he WILL jump all over them and bark in their face as his way of trying to communicate affection. And Chu Wanning is equally absolutely a cat. He is emotionally constipated, poor at expressing himself, uptight, touch starved, desperate for affection, and so lonely my chest hurts when I think about him. And for how they relate to each other...well, picture that big dog greeting a loved one at the door...except that loved one is the most hide-bound proud white cat you can imagine.
That's their dynamic.
(However, also...there are multiple timelines at play, and Taxian Jun does some truly awful things to "his" Chu Wanning in the original timeline, and many of these things are graphically described, and while it's ultimately all explained, it still all HAPPENS, so if you're going to have trouble reading fucktons of abuse between the main ship, I would not recommend this book)
5. Thousand Autumns (Qianqiu) by Meng Xi Shi.
Genre: historical China (like, references actual people, as far as I can tell), xianxia
Where to Access it: ...reading Thousand Autumns is HARD, it's split over like four websites/translators. This Carrd can kinda help? I can get you the rest if you want | donghua season 1 | I heard there's a live action in the works? But I don't know more than that.
Trigger warnings: graphic violence, mentions/threats of sexual violence (but it's all stopped before things really go wrong), starvation, description of child death (from starvation), near-death, emotional/mental abuse, major semi-permanent character injury, god, minor character death, they're major characters depending on your pov, I can't actually think of others, after writing about 2ha it feels positively fluffy). Note that there's not really any explicit content, just implications of smut, and not til basically the very end and extras.
Plot: Yan Wushi, sect leader of a demonic sect, has just come out of an extended seclusion to improve his cultivation when he and one of his disciples come across a man who is wounded to the point of near death. This turns out to be Shen Qiao, the sect leader of Mount Xuandu. When Shen Qiao awakens from his wounds, he's lost his memory, AND he's blind, and Yan Wushi decides it would be great fun and an excellent use of his time to fuck with Shen Qiao by trying to turn him evil - because Yan Wushi is certain that ALL people are inherently evil, and shattering Shen Qiao's veneer of righteousness will just help prove that.
Spoilers: it's not a veneer.
Not spoilers: Not many hijinks ensue, but there are a few hijinks, and even when it's not hijinxed, it's still not that painful...usually.
My Take: despite that synopsis, a lot of the plot of Thousand Autumns is actually political, and I like political plots, so I liked that aspect of it. However, it has some serious pacing issues imo, and it's also hard to read in English atm because it's not fully translated; it's close, now, much closer than when I read it a few months ago, so it'll be easier to read soon. Or maybe I shouldn't say it's pacing problems, but rather, it's more of a sequence of multiple major plots, strung together, with the growing relationship between Yan Wushi and Shen Qiao playing out in the background. I think if I'd known there was no "one big plot" that would have actually helped me, because it kept feeling like, "Oh, THIS is the main thing," but it never was. Things would feel climactic...except then there'd be more. So it's probably better to actually think of it as more...episodic? And the episodes/stories build, and interrelate, and do have a culmination, but not all of them directly tie in, and not all the threads end up coming together/getting resolved.
Relationship Dynamic: early on, Yan Wushi is definitely abusive and manipulative, intentionally so, and I would argue that, imo, Shen Qiao falls for it. However, mid-way through, there's some big reveals, and after that when they're reunited Shen Qiao no longer takes any shit and Yan Wushi continues to act like he doesn't care even when he clearly does. They're not a typical ship in ANY WAY, and I'd say their relationship is more founded on mutual respect than on love. Indeed, in the author's notes at one point MXS actually says they doesn't see them as the kind of couple to ever exchange love declarations, and I thought that was really interesting and it really helped me to understand how they worked together because I'll own I struggled with at times. Yan Wushi is self-interested, often cruel, and ethically and morally dubious. Shen Qiao, on the other hand, could probably ascend to Daoist godhood, he's so pure. Yet...they DO work. I'd say "opposites attract" but that's ALSO not their main trope, not exactly. They're a VERY hard ship to explain, and I know some people who've read the whole book and still don't really...get them...and I've had to really think about them to wrap my head around them...but the more I've thought about them, the more I like them.
6. Those Years in Quest of Honor Mine by Man Man He Qi Duo.
Genre: historical fiction set in either actual China or make-believe China, I'm not sure if this is directly incorporated any real people
Where to Access It: English Translation by Perpetual Daydreams | manhua (untranslated, I'm not sure if there's anyone translating it into English) | I think there's a live action in the works? Not sure beyond that though.
Trigger Warnings: suicide attempts, suicidal ideation, drug addiction, drug abuse, chronic illness (different character than the drugs), manipulation, abusive, awful parents and parental figures (not all, but definitely some), some homophobia (but way less than there could have been), probably other stuff
Plot: After 7 years away, Zhong Wan returns to the capital of the Empire with the three children of his benefactor, the seven-years-dead Prince Ning. Prince Ning was executed for treason against the previous Emperor, and Zhong Wan has done all he can to protect and raise the three kids, but he's got a lot of worries about returning to the capital and what could happen to his charges if they get pulled into the politics surrounded the Emperor. But, even worse, he's got even more worries about being reunited with Yu She, nephew of the Emperor, with whom he has more than a little history...and about whom he has been lying for the past 7 years, claiming that he is Yu She's lover, in a bid to help use Yu She's reputation to protect Prince Ning's children.
Hijinks ensue.
And so does a political nightmare.
My Take: TYQHM was a hard book to get into because there are just so many characters and it's all about politics - this is NOT a xianxia or wuxia novel, and these characters are NOT cultivators. There's basically nothing supernatural in the whole book; instead, it's about Zhong Wan and Yu She figuring out their own histories, and accepting each other, while trying to survive in a political world that increasingly wants both of them dead. However, I adore political plots, and when all was said and done I really enjoyed it, and I'm trying tooth and nail to claw other people into the fandom with me, so far with basically no success. It only has like 15 works in English on AO3. And so not only does it not fit that requirement of yours...
Relationship Dynamic: ...I think you would also probably not like the relationship dynamic? Zhong Wan is a bit like Wei Wuxian-as-Mo Xuanyu, except more...genuinely? Like, it's his actual personality, not an act, in quite the same way. I don't mean the "flamboyantly gay" part...usually...he definitely has his moments...but he's just...like, he's been through so much that he'll basically say anything, and drag himself entirely through the mud, to distract people who might hurt the three kids (they're like 16, 13, 13, now I think? It was never THAT clear to me, tbh...certainly, all are at least 10...) and, later, Yu She. He has zero face, and doesn't mind having negative face when he feels the situation demands it...and Yu She, on the other hand, has MAJOR depression issues, is sure he deserves nothing, and mostly wants to destroy everyone around him and then kill himself, at least until Zhong Wan starts giving him a reason to live again. But, more than that...Zhong Wan is like the fucking epitome of a bratty subby bottom. He wants to get fucked SO bad. And Yu She is an incredibly reluctant dom, hilariously so at times, uncomfortably/manipulative so at others. When all was said and done, I was pretty fond of them both, but there were definitely moments that made me grimace, and given what you say of how you felt about MDZS, I think this one is less likely to be to your taste?
Bonus 7: Guardian by Priest. I never finished the novel version of Guardian because the translation had some issues that caused me not to enjoy it, so I won't get into it too much, but again, Guardian is a very different book than any of the others, because it's modern fantasy(ish, like, it's still deeply embedded in Daoist-related tropes but it's more "magic spells" and less "cultivation." Like, in terms of what it's like, it felt more like Japanese modern Onmyoji style stories, to me, than it felt like the ancient Chinese wuxia/xianxia cultivation stories.). I'm not gonna get into lots of details, because I read part of the book more than a year ago, and have seen the show (which is VERY different) like three times, so I can hardly even remember what they're like in the novel. There was definitely some weirdness, though? If you're potentially interested, I'd suggest starting with the drama instead. The plot for that is...
Plot: Zhao Yunlan heads a Special Investigation Unit in the human world tasked with maintaining a treaty between humans and the dixigren ("undergrounders") who are (in the show) aliens (in the book...it's the world of the dead). While doing this job, he keeps running into this professor, Shen Wei, who definitely knows more than he oughta.
Hijinks ensue.
And then it murders you with feels.
The live action streams from YouTube - here.
(Warning: uh, I don't want to give spoilers, but my "guaranteed happy ending" does NOT apply to the Guardian TV show...but it does apply to the book, as I understand it.)
*
Anyway, this was a terrible use of my time but it was definitely more fun than what I should be doing, and it's probably way more information than you wanted or needed, but since I wasn't sure what exactly you had in mind, I figured...might as well be thorough?
(Today's hyper-focus fail: this post, ha...)
#unforth rambles#i'm not gonna tag the fandoms because i give my own opinions#some of which aren't all THAT positive#i think it's best if I don't just dump that into the main tags

Anime I Watched in Quarantine
With some of the restrictions being lifted, I wanted to make a sort of master post to see just how much Iāve watched in my time off. Plus, I wanted to share something more lighthearted with everyone.
All of these anime will be rated on a 1-10 scale, 10 meaning masterpiece, 1 meaning complete garbage. Iāll also share what I liked/didnāt like about each show. This list will go in chronological order, and will encompass all anime from 3/13 - 6/13. Multiple Seasons will be grouped together.Ā
1. Beastars - 8/10Ā
I dig how human and down-to-earth Beastars is. The pacing was a nice and the animation was unexpectedly great! Itās driving force is its characters and their interactions. Felt a little slow at times, and Juno annoys me, but thatās okay. Iāll be watching season 2.
2. Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun - 8/10Ā
Oh my god! This visuals for this were absolutely wonderful! It did feel a little cliche at times, I wonāt lie. But, I still loved all of these characters and the nice balance between creepy and comedy.Ā
3. Ao No Exorcist - 6/10Ā
I posted about this one after I finished it. The ending really pissed me off. I feel like if I had watched this when I was 13, I wouldāve given it a higher score. Compared to some of the other shounen Iāve watched, this felt a bit basic. That doesnāt mean I still didnāt like it. Still have to get around to watching season 2...
4.Ā Kaichou wa Maid-sama! 6.5/10
Shoujo usually isnāt my cup of tea. Maid-sama was a nice way to ease into the cliches of shoujo. Misaki is a great protagonist and the ending Maid-sama was so satisfying. Iām only giving it a low score because of its slow pacing and lack of certain character development.Ā
5.Ā Violet Evergarden Gaiden: Eien to Jidou Shuki NingyouĀ - 7/10
Iām a big Violet Evergarden fan to begin with, so of course I liked this movie. It did not resonate with me as much as the series itself, but I still enjoyed it. Kyoto animation is never disappointing in their visuals and sound designĀ
6.Ā Ā Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! - 8/10Ā
Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! Ren - 6.5/10Ā
Chuunibyou was a breath of fresh air for me. It was so different from all other romance anime I had seen at the time. It for sure has a slice of life vibe to it, but it was still so good! It reminded me of being in middle school and myĀ āchuunibyouā phase. The second season was not as enjoyable as the first. I guess I just had higher expectations for Rikka and Yuuta.Ā
7. Dr. Stone - 7/10
Dr. Stone is honestly such a perfect shounen for me. Iām a science nerd, and with taking AP Chem this year it was kind of nice to sorta apply my knowledge. This show also has some of the best reaction images ever. The tone, however, is a little inconsistent which made it hard to keep watching. I do love the relationship between Senku and his Dad, that whole sub-plot was so endearing.
8. Oshiete! Galko-chan - 6/10
This one only gets a low score because its so short and the op takes up like half an episode. This show had been in the back of my mind for a while. I decided to watch it after seeing a video essay discussing it. Its masterful subversion of tropes and stereotypes was refreshing. The message of this show is so positive, and everyone can benefit from watching something like this.Ā Ā
9. Mairimashita Iruma-kunĀ - 5/10Ā
The second half of Mairimashita Iruma-kun was so much better. Iām not completely sure why I didnāt like this as much as I should have. Overall, its a really average show. The comedy (and musical numbers???) give this show and charismatic and chaotic vibe. Iām someone who focuses primarily on character-character interactions, and this show definitely had it. It isnāt monogatari levels of dialogue but itās still nice. For the studioās low budget, they were able to make a really bright and colorful show. Iāll be watching season 2.Ā Ā
10. Byousoku 5 Centimeter - 8/10
Very. VERY. Pretty!! This one was another one that didnāt completely resonate with me emotionally. I still loved the story and the way it was told. Its not like Your Name or Tenki no Ko, itās realistic and grounded.
11. Mob Psycho 100 - 8/10
Mob Psycho 100 II - 9/10Ā
Style alone made Mob Psycho 100 so impressive. By the second half of each season I was emotional invested in Mob and his whole journey. Season 2 is receiving a higher score because it was able to make me cry. Thatās something I NEVER expected. Iām mad I didnāt watch this sooner. It is a great balance of action, comedy, and heart.Ā
12. Noragami Aragoto - 8/10Ā
Not sure why I put off Norogamiās second season for so long. I absolutely loved it. The focus on Bishimon was a nice change of pace and it was great to see Yukine develop more as a character and begin to loose his arrogance. Kazuma was my favorite character in all of this. His ability to affect the people around him was presented nicely. I was emotionally invested the whole way through, and Iāll probably pick up the manga.Ā
13. Ookami Shoujo to Kuro Ouji - 3/10
Ah yes. My least favorite thing on planet earth. This is a wonderful example of Shoujo at its worst. Their relationship was incredibly toxic, and the characters themselves were poorly developed and generic. The whole time all I could think was that I was watching normalized Stockholm Syndrome. Our MC deserves so much better.Ā
14. Youjo Senki - 6/10
Iāll be honest, I wasnāt expecting to like Youjo Senki as much as I did. Iām not usually one for iesekai. The action was great, but the use of CGI bogged down scenes. I do NOT really like the protagonist that much because she came across as apathetic. Towards the end, I started to like her more. This was also my first military/warfare-focused anime. If either a movie or second season is made, I will probably not watch it.Ā
15. Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica - 6.5/10
I wanted to like Madoka Magica more than I did. I really did. The style was compelling and the story was interesting. Especially in the beginning, a lot of the death and sad stuff didnāt feel all that sad. The last 4 episodes are a solid 8/10, I love time shenanigans. The emotions and character development really shined through in the end. Madoka is such an inherently kind-hearted person, I love her so much!Ā
16. Yakusoku no Neverland - 8.5/10Ā
I was expecting Yakusoku no Neverland to be more graphic, but Iām kind of glad it didnāt go that route. Like Madoka, the last four episodes had me really invested. However, the character development was not as rushed. Itās a smart show and welcomed change of pace. Emma is my favorite character and you bet Iāll be watching season 2. The more I think about this show, the more I appreciate it.Ā
17. Mo Dao Zu Shi - 9/10
Mo Dao Zu Shi 2nd Season - 8/10Ā
I know that is is technically a donghua, but Iām counting it as an anime because its on MAL. Amazing visuals and an incredibly layered story.Ā Censorship makes it difficult to fully appreciate this work and its original novel. Even though I was confused for the first 2 episodes, Mo Dao Zu Shi did a great job of developing the time period and character relationships. The second season wasnāt as satisfying as the first but still great! I donāt think Iāll be watching the live action anytime soon, but I believe that a 3rd season is confirmed for 2020.
18. Banana Fish - 8.5/10
I knew nothing about Banana Fish going into it. Although I didnāt cry at the ending, it definitely made me feel some type of way. Kind of... numb. Banana Fish is painfully realistic. So much so that I had to take a break after episode 15 because I felt sick to my stomach. I also praise Banana Fish for itās healthy, non-fetishized relationship representation. Eiji and Ash have such a complex but healthy relationship. I hope Banana Fish is able to pave the way for better representation in media.Ā
19. Promare - 5/10Ā
Why do people praise Promare so much? I hated how predictable it was. The whole movie felt like a 2 hour animation flex for Trigger. The only character in this movie that didnāt manage to piss me off it some way was Lio. The only other thing Iāve seen by studio Trigger is Kill la Kill, so compared to that, this felt like such a step down. :( I was disappointed.Ā
20. Given - 6/10
Given made me both sad and made me want to start a band. Overall the animation is nothing special, I do like the reactions that some of the characters had. Especially thatĀ āItās Mutualā gif set. I couldnāt get over how much Ritsuka looks like Kageyama. My only complaint was how rushed Mafuyu and Ritsukaās relationship felt. More time should have been dedicated to Mafuyu dealing with and moving past the loss in his life. All that said, Iām still watching the movie.
21. Enen no Shouboutai - 5/10Ā
Generic Shounen, bad ending, great animation. Need I say more? I did not watch Soul Eater (made by same creator), but this was enjoyable. Really cool fights, not so cool character development. A lot of the explanations towards the end felt like complete bull shit. Same energy as using fancy sounding science words to explain things.Ā
22. Hataraku Maou-Sama - 5.5/10
This is another show I felt I wouldāve liked more if I watched it when I was younger. The iesekai trope is so beaten down that classics like this donāt really carry as much weight as they originally did. A 24 episode season with more Slice of Life episodes wouldāve benefited this series greatly.
23. BNA - 7/10
BNA, in my opinion, was so much better than Promare. Like Hataraku Maou-sama, BNA wouldāve benefited from a longer season with more Slice of Life Episodes. Triggerās newer animation is beautiful and I really hope BNA gets renewed for a second season. The ending was cliche as hell, but still really enjoyed this show!
24. Devilman: Crybaby - 7/10Ā
A.K.A. The one show Iāve got to watch when I know Iām alone. The use of multiple languages besides Japanese in the sub was a unique take. The animation was also a little jarring at first, but I came to love it. The themes in this are not the most positive. The end left me feeling numb, but also appreciative. Ryo pissed me off as soon as he tried to kill that cat, so it was hard to sympathize with him in the very end. It is a really good show, but also sickening, Watch at your own discretion.Ā Ā

Chapters 234-238 of season 2 are up!
Phew, Zhangxuan's past arc is finished. That was super tiring, mostly because ofĀ having to format the chapters to not make this arc even more confusing than it already is. The only thing left now is the final battle arc and some bonus chapters!
And on the topic of the final battle arc: people who only watched the donghua version of that arc should be warned that the manhua's version is almost entirely different from what director Li did with season 2. So be prepared to be as confused as the manhua followers were during the airing of this episode.
To sum up the things that DIDN'T happen in the manhua:
Xiren trying to recreate the day Zhangxuan died just to kill Xi (...Xiren is a mad control freak, but even he isn't that insane...)
Siyun having any role in the final battle arc
Zhangxuan's soul disappearing (...my biggest "WTF" in the entire final episode. Even more so that it was followed by Xiren turning his brother into Zombiexuan...but the whole reason it happened in the manhua was because Zhangxuan was still alive.)
Xiren and the Shenlong family being punished for their actions and banished (...unfortunately).
What you will get instead is a huge amount of badass Yang Jinghua though so stay tuned!
Both the links to the translations files and to the new Tencent guides are on my profile - you need to be on desktop Tumblr though, as for some reason the extra pages arenāt visible on mobile. The translations are on āLing Qi translationsā page and the guides are on āHow to buy points for Tencentā.
If you like my Ling Qi translations, you can toss a coin to your Ā translator and buy me a Kofi! But I accept praises and head pats as well! :D Donāt worry about the blanks - Elena will add them when sheāll have a bit of time, since sheās currently busy with college.

I posted too soon.... I will say that hearing VAs you recognise enjoy is pretty awesome
1. Shrangi-la frontier
This is really funny. It took me ages to start watching it, but there's something charming about these virtual reality gamers who play things their own way. This one is actiony and funny!
2. My daughter left the nest and returned an s-rank adventurer
I love this! It started because belgrieve's VA is Junichi Sawara (Aomine) but this is a seriously nice show! Lots offamily love, still waiting for Bel to Show Them All... but I look forward to this one each week!
3. S2 Ancient Magus Bride
S1 is... slow. It's got a lot of interesting stuff, but it's def slow. Season 2? A great opening song AND its pretty action packed. It's set at uni which is cool - so many are not! And it's a delightful spiderweb of plots.
4. Campfire cooking in another world with my absurd school is yes, another isekai, but it's about cooking and a dude with his overpowered familiars. It helps that daichi's VA voices Fel, but it's slice of life with a teensy bit of drama and lots of humour.
5. Yuri on ice
I love this show. I know it's really popular but it's so nice having a bl where they are just in love? There's no angst (about that at least), and i love the opening song.
6. Heaven officials blessing s1, its donghua rather than anime, and the version on crunchy roll has the chinese VAs.
The opening song is STUNNING. Absolutely stunning
It's full of gorgeous art, and it's a gentle live story. I asked a feiend for recs and they said this one is not angst filled... and there is something gorgeous about it. It's got a really gentle feel to it and I'm still lookimg for more not to angsty stuff xD theres also so much fanart....
7. Tsukimitchi moonlit fantasy
Another Isekai! Boy is called in by a goddess who decides he is too ugly and dumps him. I know... it doesn't sound like much, but I love an underdog and this one finished in a place where I reaaaaly want a second season!
8. Snow white notes
I love stories where people get their groove back. and the group obsession with something superspecific (you'll see that again in Tsurune. And in all sports anime). In this case, the shamizan, a traditional musical instrument. I picked this up, not expecting much, and I was charmed.
9. Midnight occult civil service
Where yokai live all around tokyo, and are managed by the midnight occult covil service. But no one can talk to them. until the new guy. And we get more understanding, but its not all smooth sailing... I like this sort of thing. To me the last 2 or 3 eps arent part of the main story and they didn't leave me feeling good, so even though the idea of them is great, I say end on a happier note.
10. Case study of Vanitas
I know this is well known... but it's one I overlooked for a long time. Sometimes you need a good vampire story. i think it was in this that i realised tobio's VA is in EVERYTHING
I have some anime recommendations.
I have STRUGGLED this year to find things to watch. I don't particularly like romance - it saps the storyline - and I like action/comedy. It's why I've always had a taste for sports anime.
So... this is just a starting point for the lost souls who are just after something, and don't know where to start. This is in no particular order, although prob related to how recently I watched it...
1. The Apothecary Diary
Set in a land in the far east, Maomao is sold to the back palace. From there she solves mysteries.
This is honestly such a great show! Intrigue, engaging characters, and you could absolutely read Maomao as aroace. This was a stand out.
I also love the opening song. Very Shakira-esque.
2. Another stand out was Death Mount, Death Play
I'm not a fan of super violence, so I almost didn't make it past ep 1... but I ADORED this show. The main character is amazing, the shark in the credits is so cute, the story is many faceted, and I seriously adored it! highly reccomend.
3. I wasn't expecting to enjoy God of High School.
Now, it absolutely does feel like it needs a second season, but it ended in a way that felt okay too... it is based on aKorean wrbcomic, but has japanes va's. It's an over powered fighting anime, with mystery powers and a very likable main character. It's got super baddies to hate, and it does edge into too violent for my taste, but still sat down and watched my way through it xD
4. Ah... my beloved sports anime. I'm gonna add Haikyuu! And Kuroko no Basket here. I mean... both are fandoms I write for xD
Haikyuu!! Is great as there are no real bad guys, and lots of growth all round.
Kuroko is basically magical high school boys who play high school basketball, but same thing: lots of character growth, lots of friendship.
One thing I love is how the boys cry? I mean that in a they are disappointed when they lose and aren't told to suck it up. I always appreciate that!
5. It's been hard to avoid isekai animes, and some of them are less than engaging, it is true. But some? Some are delightful!
5a So, I got reincarnated as a slime is one of my faves.
It's just... nice? Satisfying? It doesn't reaaaaally push any boundaries (although I love almost everything about the final arc). There's so many loveable characters, and it's alot of fun. It helps I've always loved slimes, so this overpowered one isno exception.
5b why Raeliana ended up at the dukes mansion is, yes a romance.
But its also fun. Our protagonist is reincarnated into a gane, as a character that they know will die. And they don't want to die! And so... this isthat story.
5c. This lead me down the reincarnated in a game pathway, and I came across My next life as a villainess: all roads lead to doom
You know those really dumb lovable characters? Well, I love Catarina. She is charming with a harem comorised if almost everyone she grew up with, and there's just something so delightful! I laughed outloud as much as i groaned at this one!
Older ones I reccomend:
Natsume's Book of friends
Slice of life about a boy who can see spirits. Definitely leans towards melancholy, but really leans into found family
2. Black Clover
Look. Get past Asta screaming in the first 20 eps and you've got some enjoyable action. The characterisation is

Not that anyone will read this but I'm sorry I've been away for quite a long time. I got busy with real life, lost people and interests along the way but my love for MXTX things has always been there, it was just put on the back burner for a while.
I guess I'm sort of back? I just finished watching the SVSS donghua and boy, I need a season 2 stat. I'm still bummed the manhua was dropped due to studio problems.
I also just recently finished season 2 of MDZS and I'm really ecstatic to find out there's going to be a season 3 coming out soon. I'm not getting my hopes up on the kind of details they will include the coming season knowing about the censorship every time there's a bl work being adapted but I'm still going to watch it when it comes out.
Lastly, I finally managed to finish Heaven Official's Blessings on Netflix and caught up with the latest translated chapter of the manhua on the bilibili app. I'm rereading the novel because I didn't get to finish until the during the first time I read, I think a few years ago I stopped around chapter 230? And there has been more chapters that have come out since then. It's been so long that I thought it would be better to just start from the beginning again now that the novel is fully translated.
There's also the live action adaptation of HOB entitled Eternal Faith? I haven't read a lot about the fan reactions to the planned adaptation but I have seen set photos and I'm just truly happy to see the HOB in another form of media. Again, censorship still exists so I'm not expecting lots of overtly BL stuff on screen but I'll take the crumbs the live action series will provide me.
That's it for my love letter to anyone who's still following this page. There's so much MXTX content that my heart's close to bursting and I'm happy to be able to share the joy I feel to anyone still following me.
Thank you and I'll see you around.

The June Review
Dramas & Films I watched in June
The Romance of Tiger and Rose (2020) [9.5 out of 10]
I finally watched this so I could stop avoiding spoilers and tbh it did not disappoint. I finished this in about 2 days and I honestly donāt know what to do with myself now. I might have to start calling Lu Si the comedy queen because of the one heck of the performance she put on. I also loved the chemistry between the leads and by ep 10, it was so obvious the male lead was so in love with her, my heart just burst for them. The couple also reminded me of Donghua & Fengjiu in some instances bc Han Shuo is whipped for his woman just like Donghua is. Anyway... I might have to go rewatch this bc I feel empty inside now.Ā
My Dear Lady (2020) [6.5 out of 10]
I watched this curiously because of the summary but it seems most of the plot happened towards the end of the drama and by the end it felt rushed. I also got bored often watching most of this but the acting was still good.Ā
Kore Wa Keihi de Ochimasen! (2019) [8.5 out of 10]
I do truly enjoy watching some jdramas bc theyāre just 10 episodes with no exaggerated or lengthy plot line and this was exactly it. It also had the subtle romance plot which doesnāt take the majority of the 10 eps which I quite enjoyed. And pretty much each ep came with a different story which I also loved with odd exception of the romance plot and the two last episodes.Ā
Kleun Cheewit (2017) [7.5 out of 10]
This isnāt my first lakorn and it certainly wonāt be my last either. The chemistry between the two leads were amazing. Iām not sure what else to say... felt like they dragged out some parts and some things were a little so-so but good drama.Ā
Mystic Pop Up Bar (2020) [9.0 out of 10]
This is probably one of the best dramas Iāve watched this year, at first I wasnāt planning on watching it but I decided to give it a try and little did I know, I was going to be hooked two episodes in. I did mostly watch it for the back story (with the young actors) and I hope when theyāre older they might consider doing another drama together. But Iām a sucker for tragedy & angst which I also try to avoid most of the time going into dramas (this is a very odd combo). The plot was great. A great drama, and I notice this also applies to books, when the audience guesses and already knows of the plot twists before they are revealed. Itās quite satisfying when all the pieces fall into place and that is exactly what happened. Mystic Pop Up Bar also kept it light-hearted bc you needed the humour after watching some of the angsty scenes, phew.Ā
Someday or One Day (2019) [8.5 out of 10]
I guess you could say this is a murder mystery for most of the episodes. The twist and turns are quite unexpected and I quite enjoyed watching. Greg Hsu could have my heart any day of the week. (this list is getting longer and longer with each passing day)
Want More 19 (2018) [7.0 out of 10]
A short web drama. I mean... the main reason I was here was for Day6ā²s OSTĀ āChocolateā Itās a great song. Also an amazing band. Again, itās just a breather in between long-winded dramas.Ā
The Legend of White Snake (2019) [7.0 out of 10]
I know I said below another drama review that I had changed my ways and donāt skip through things now. Well... I skipped through this one mainly because I got fed up and bored, this consistently lasted through a whole chunk of eps. So I kind of skipped to the end... I didnāt miss much if Iām being honest and I wasnāt a fan of the ending.Ā
Tokyo Tarareba Musume (2017) [8.5 out of 10]
I went through a phase of watching dramas but regretted not paying enough attention to them the first time I watched them, either by skipping through the episode or just missing out episodes in general. Now that Iāve changed my ways and want to fully appreciate dramas, no matter how good or bad, I decided to rewatch this. Thereās nothing better than watching Sakaguchi Kentaro be an angsty af man. Anyway, I enjoyed this very much. Jdramas have a lovely charm about them by not being too long and donāt drag out the storyline either.Ā
Good Casting (2020) [8.0 out of 10]
A better title for this show would be Chan Mi and her sidekicks... I wasnāt really a big fan of her character. She was literally everywhere & I think thatās where the plot falls... maybe I would have liked it more if we actually had a chance at seeing more of the other main characters. I think I was trying so hard to find a reason to like it but there wasnāt much to like about it. The premise of it sounded so appealing but again, it was just another drama that fell short.Ā
When My Love Blooms (2020) [7.5 out of 10]
Letās be real here... I was watching this for Park Jinyoung & Jeon So Nee, I donāt know about you all. Honestly... I felt like Jinyoung & Jeon So Neeās storyline would have worked well in a standalone drama. That would be quite interesting to see. Anyway, great chemistry between those two as well. I canāt say much for the present day storyline, easiest way to put it, I didnāt like it. But I suppose itās what I get for a melodrama with the added extra drama tag. (Note to self, stop watching melodramas)Ā
My Woofy Poofy Love (2018) [8.0 out of 10]
Itās quite refreshing to watch short web dramas like this in between heavy dramas. You are angst free while watching fluffy web dramas. This was pure sweetness and very uplifting to watch, especially because Iāve been watching some heavy dramas recently.Ā
Where Your Eyes Linger (2020) [10 out of 10] (BL)
Iāve never given out a 10 before, theyāre rare, extremely rare. Perfect actors, perfect length of episodes, perfect storyline. I loved it. I loved the way it reeled you in the first couple of episodes, with the fluff and the humour, then it eased you in and gave you a taste of the angst to come before completely ripping your heart out. And they gave us a kiss! A KISS! It was one of the softest kisses ever. PLEASE GIVE US SEASON 2... Ahem. At the moment, it is one of the best dramas I have seen this year. (Iām going to have to compile a list at the end of year of the best dramas, arenāt I? Thereās bound to be more than one, Mystic Pop Up Bar is heading for a Best Drama crown this year too) Anyway. Go watch it, itās worth it.Ā
The King: Eternal Monarch (2020) [7.5 out of 10]
Okay, if you follow me, youāll know I was watching this for Woo Do Hwan and also Kim Kyung Name (you might have not known that one) and the queen Kim Go Eun. I mean itās definitelyĀ not the best drama Iāve seen all year, itās only June, thereās plenty of time for another drama to come out and impress everyone. But with this one... there was nothing really keeping me there except those three. My interest did peak around the middle episodes but died down quickly after. I wasnāt in love with Kim Go Eun/Lee Min Ho pairing but thatās just me, certain episodes they clicked with me and others they didnāt. I wanted more out of that final ep but I donāt at the same time. I wanted to see more of everyoneās life instead of the brief snippets we got, not to be biased but I wanted more to see more of Jo Yeong. I guess you take what you can get... we were teased with so much, the excellent cast, the hype for it and having a well known writer behind it but having watched it, it was a big let down, for me at least.Ā
Born Again (2020) [7.0 out of 10]
For an overall mystery/crime/fantasy/melodrama drama (If we can call it that) it wasnāt that bad... if we exclude the horror of the romance plot. The writer glorified what Jang Ki Yongās characters did and that was not okay, he clearly needed help. Main Female lead ended up with the wrong guy. Lee Soo Hyuk deserves better. The stylist and him need a raise for his outfits during the later episodes when his past self takes over his current body because hot damn he was pulling that off better than any other character Iāve seen in a suit.Ā
My Holo Love (2020) [8.0 out of 10]
I loved the beginning of the drama but my interest died down after the plot was revealed (an evil man wanting the AI)... but I did however love the last scene of the series, that was a nice way to end it.Ā
Novoland: The Castle In the Sky (2016)Ā [7.5 out of 10]
I just struggled to get into the storyline, Iām not sure whether to go back and watch theĀ āhappy endingā (ep 29) because I was fine with how they ended things.Ā
Maybe, Maybe Not (2019) [8.0 out of 10]
This a web drama, sweet and short ^.^
Long Time No See (2017) (BL) [8.5 out of 10]
This is just a short little drama, I loved the chemistry between the leads and it was very action packed for the few episodes it had.Ā
Snow Flower (2019) [Movie] [7.0 out of 10]
There is just something about Japanese movies... and sometimes dramas. Itās hard to explain, where they can be the most melancholic and beautifully filmed thing. Itās the odd feeling I get when Iām drinking coffee and itās raining outside and Iām just overwhelmed and feeling nostalgic. Have you ever watched a film where you thought it was good, not extremely good, just good and not really have any qualms with it. This was the movie. Setting itself to be a sad movie with itās summary surrounding terminal illness, but itās hardly reflected upon. It focuses more on the romantic side of things which I didnāt mind. If youāve got 2 hours to kill then it might be worth the watch.
Secretly, Greatly (2013) [Movie] [8.0 out of 10]
Worth a watch. Itās a good spy action movie with the comedy elements added into it as well.Ā

TOP 5 BL DRAMAS
1. Gay Ok Bangkok
I love this show so much I could honestly go on about it forever but Iāll keep it simple and short. I donāt even think this is technically considered a BL but this is one of my favorite dramas and in my opinion very underrated so Iām going to include it. Jojo who directed 3 Will Be Free and Friend Zone directed it and Iām pretty sure Aof aka everyoneās favorite director also worked on it so you know itās good quality. Itās about the daily lives of a diverse group of gay men living in Bangkok and is probably one of the most realistic shows Iāve ever watched. Not to mention that a good portion of the cast themselves are also not straight and they deserve to be supported. Itāll probably never happen but Iām still hoping for a 3rd season. I need Nat and Arm to be end game so bad.
2. Until We Meet Again
Where do I start with UWMA? I still havenāt accept the fact that itās over. It was such a soft and sweet show with an amazing cast and crew. OhmFluke have so much chemistry and are so cute with each other. I know a lot of people complained about it being boring and slow but I could have literally watched an hour each week of DeanPharm eating and cuddling with each other and been completely satisfied with it. The final episode made me cry and Fluke deserves all the awards for his performance.
3. History 3: MODC
This show got off to a rough start but quickly became one of my favorite shows ever. Itās also one of those shows I could go on and on about. It was so sweet and made me laugh so much. I love good friendship dynamics in my media and MODC had a great example of it. The friend group were the cutest, silliest, most supportive group of people. Hao Ting and Xi Gu had such an amazing relationship by the end and the characters had some of the best character growth Iāve seen in a while. Itās just a shame that it didnāt have a full 10 episodes like Trapped though.
4. Heās Coming to Me
HCTM was one of my most anticipated shows of 2019 and it didnāt let me down. Itās such a shame that GMM didnāt promote it properly because it deserves to be way more popular than it is.Ā I appreciate the fact that the main plot of the show wasnāt just about romance. I love a good mystery and HCTM delivered on that end. Singto and Ohm are some of the best actors in the industry in my opinion and if you donāt think so before watching HCTM then you definitely will after.
5. Theory of Love
TOL was such a fun show.Ā I loved all the romance movie references they made in it. We all know Gun is a great actor but Off really stepped up his game here. He did a wonderful job playing Khai. I only skimmed through Honey Puppy and didnāt really care for it so it was great seeing the two of them in a show together again. Theory of Love is also one of the only dramas Iāve ever succeeded in getting my sister to watch so you know that means itās good.
5 HONORABLE MENTIONS
6. Sotus
I almost never talk about Sotus but this show has a special place in my heart. It was the first Thai show I watched not including the random clips of Hormones I used to find on youtube. I canāt believe itās already been four years since itās aired. For being one of the early BLs itās definitely one of the better ones. It has such a nice, sweet plot and doesnāt include a lot of the questionable elements a lot of BLs have. Not to mention it introduced me to the one and only Singto Prachaya.
7. Great Men Academy
Not going to lie, I put off watching this when it was airing because I was not into the plot at all. But after hearing all the praise it got I decided to check it out and I donāt regret a single thing. Itās such a good show! The plot may sound wacky but they manage to make it work. The cast is a major plus as well. James is one of my favorite actors and it was the first show I got to see JJ act in.
8. History 2: Crossing the Line
I donāt often do complete rewatches shows but I did with this one so you know that means itās good. I also am not one to watch a lot of sports themed shows so the fact that I watched it not once but twice is another sign of how good it is. Fandy and Zach do such a good job and have so much chemistry with each other. Itās a very sweet and simple show. I hope we hear news of the movie soon.
9. History 3: Trapped
Iām a sucker for anything gangster themed so I knew I would be into it. Despite some plot holes due to choppy editing and a slightly unsatisfactory ending, itās still a very good show. Itās a fun, action packed good time. Itās also very well acted. I was so upset when it ended I sobbed almost the entire last episode.
10. The Untamed
Although this is one of my favorite dramas Iām also not technically sure if this is considered a BL which is why I have it in honorable mentions. I got into MDZS right when season 1 of the donghua had finished airing so I couldnāt wait for this to air. I waited a until a few weeks into airing to really start watching so that I could binge it and managed to catch up for the last couple episodes. I honestly donāt have words to express how much I loved this show. Is it perfect? No but itās still very well done and you can tell a lot of love and effort went into it. The acting? Excellent. OST? Superb. Chemistry? Off the charts. Also another show that made me sob. I think I cried through at least 2/3 of the episodes.
Iām tagging @snarkymaknae @functionalasfuck @artisticgrroove @ladyemkaldwin and anyone else that wants to do it
