Position Paper on Xenoblade Chronicles
CJ Krueger 3/21/17 English 101 XENOBLADE CHRONICLES
I just added in some facts, expanded a few ideas, things like that.
Xenoblade Chronicles came out in 2011 for the Nintendo Wii everywhere but North America, North America got the European localized version in 2012, and the game was remade in 2015 for the NEW Nintendo 3DS. It was developed by Monolith Soft, published by Nintendo, Koh Kojima was the lead designer, Katsunori Itai was the lead programmer, and the lead artist was Norihino Takami. It has quickly become the favorite game of many people, including me. The backstory of the game is that the main character lives on the bodies of two titans, the Bionis and the Mechonis. The people of the Bionis are being attacked by machines from the Mechonis, the Mechon. A soldier wielding the only known weapon that can harm the Mechon, the Monado, dealt a finishing blow to the Mechon’s primary forces at the cost of the use of his right arm. One year later, the Mechon return and attack our main character’s hometown, killing his childhood friend (who wants to be more than a friend), and bringing a new force to the frontlines, Faced Mechon that can’t be harmed by the Monado! Our main character takes up the mantle of the war hero Dunban, who is the person who last used the Monado, by taking the Monado and fighting the Mechon to get revenge for the death of his friend.
This game has a captivating story, written by Tetsuya Takahashi, Yuichiro Takeda, and Yurie Hattori. The characters are entrancing, each having a vital role in the party and story of their own. Each cut scene has different meanings in each playthrough and allows the player to discover the massive world (30.59 square kilometers, which is 11.81 square miles, Skyrim is about 14-15 square miles (using Skyrim as an example because, what gamer hasn’t heard about Skyrim?)) The spiritual sequel to the game (titled Xenoblade Chronicles X (very creative Nintendo)) is about 5 times as large (about 56.05 square miles, or 152.95 km and most of that was loaded during the ENTIRE GAME!) and I feel that the canonical sequel will be even bigger than that one (as it is on the Nintendo Switch, which has the open world Zelda game and Skyrim, and is more powerful than the Wii U, which is the console that X was on. The graphics are not the best, but a lot of people when they see the game don’t believe at first that it is a Nintendo Wii game based on the graphics alone.
The reception was extremely high. All the reviewing groups gave it between 8/10 and 9/10 and the ones that use stars gave it 4-5 stars. Despite this, the game almost did not come out in the North American region. While Wikipedia I not that reliable of a source, most of the time, in this situation, when it comes to ratings and reviews from popular groups whose job it is to rate and review games I’d say that it is a good tool for this paper. Several YouTube content creators have played this game and have loved it. The one that comes to mind immediately is Chuggaaconroy. Chugga has been creating Let’s Plays since his first one debuted on March 26, 2008, which is when YouTube had a time limit, and is still providing extraordinary content to this day. He has over 1,000,000 subscribers, and I feel that the fame has changed him. However, I don’t think he changed for the worst, I think the fame encouraged him to improve his quality. My evidence for this is comparing his first LP, EarthBound (Mother 2), His 13th LP, which was his first LP after the time limit was removed from YouTube, Okami, his 24th LP, Kid Icarus Uprising, his 33rd LP, Splatoon, and even his current LP (which is his 34th LP), Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. He has improved dramatically over the last 9 years.
There is one thing, I noticed, that many people don’t like about this game, is the length. Easily, this game can be over 100 hours if you are just doing the main story, over 300 if you defeat all the unique monsters, and 100% is over 700 hours! That Chuggaaconroy guy I mentioned in the last paragraph, he did a Let’s Play of this game. It took him 47 hours, 11 minutes, and 48 seconds (mad props to the fan that calculated this out as I got that info from the wiki that people have created for him). However, he has played this game several times, and he didn’t fully get 100%. He killed all the Unique monsters, completed all the side quests, viewed all the affinity scenes, but he did not get all the achievements in the game, which I don’t blame him for (there are a lot!).
This game made me realize that I like story elements of the games I play, story is more important in a game than graphics to me. The game has taught me that it can be exhilarating to overcome a challenge. I have also learned that when you immerse yourself in the world of the game, your enjoyment is heightened tenfold. I have been a gamer for a long time, and no game series has made me fall in love with it as quickly, or as deeply, as this one. I cannot wait for future installments of this series as I am sure that they will be even better than the ones we have now.
