Larian on the brain. You know what parallel I just thought of. The Ascended Astarion business and Lohse from DOS:II. Lord knows how long it's been since I've played Divinity so details are fuzzy, but the idea of washing away all those souls with Lohse as a means of freeing herself and Astarion sacrificing all those spawn to free himself.
To one, freedom is removing the voice in their head and that figure who's been a looming presence for (admittedly) not a lot of her life by comparison.
To the other, freedom is turning himself into the thing that's been torturing him. Both currently and also in the past.
I think the timelines and how long they were under that control probably have an effect on how they handle their respective situatione, but how would Lohse react if she had been tortured by Adramahlihk for 200 years? How would Astarion have reacted if presented with the chance to free himself from Cazador before the centuries of horror that he had to experience?
