All of my thoughts on RWBY: taken from one of my videos here

If you haven’t watched RWBY yet... I honestly don’t know what to tell you. The show is genuinely one of my favorite anime of all time. It’s got an amazing cast of interesting characters, great writing, an amazing world to get immersed in. Every character you meet sticks with you, many of the fights are fast paced and memorable, and being a lore buff like me pays off in this world.

But RWBY isn’t... perfect, and having finished the newest season and rewatched the show from the beginning... I have some issues.

Don’t get me wrong, the new season had some excellent parts. The fight between Blake and Adam was literally perfect, and side note, idk why fans are saying Adam got nerfed for this fight or made weaker, when some of his only notable feats happen during this fight. The man lands hits like mortal kombat combos.

Anyway, I don’t want to just crap on the show so before I go into what I didn’t like, I’ll get into what I did. But before then, I’ll have to give you a brief rundown of the show. But before THEN I gotta give my obligatory plug

Got it? Good.

So here’s everything I love about the series.

I really like the character designs. Every single character has an excellent design and I could really do a video on how character design helps develop character and tell a story just using this show. Every person in the show has an interesting and cool design that helps you to remember and understand them.

An easy example is Weiss. She dresses like an actual princess, her color scheme and weapons are all very elegant looking and it hints at her high class status without even having to spell it out for you.

Plus I love how characters names are based off of fairy tales or mythology. For example, Sun, Sage, and the ironically named Neptune. The motif of fairy tales is fun too, for example Ruby being Little Red Riding hood, Ozpin and Glenda Goodwich being wizard of oz references, ironwood being the tin man and Leo being the lion, Qrow and scarecrows and all of that. Weiss and Winter both have names very directly based on snow.

Every name in this show was very clearly thought out, and even abilities too.

Sun can make clones of himself just like in the myth, Blake has issues with running from her problems, so she can make clones, yang has anger issues and can go super saiyan, almost everyone’s power has something to do with their personality.

Salem is such a fun villain. I wish she could do more because she’s really sinister and scary. She’s such a fun villain to watch but she doesn’t do shit.

I also love the fight scenes, I love how bombastic and fast paced they are, and it’s really cool how every character has their own unique style of movement and fighting that vary between them. The fights in this show are quick and stick in your mind, and there’s an emphasis put often on how much a character can move in a short amount of time.

Cinder as much as I hate her is also a great villain, and that’s why I hate her.

Roman Torchwick is also a GREAT villain and The way he dies is satisfying as hell, and seeing Neo again made me scream.

The worldbuilding is my favorite aspect of the show. Now I’m weird and I like info dumps and that’s why I enjoy those World Of Remnant videos that expand on the worldbuilding so as not to bog down story with info dumps. The world is really fun to learn about, how humanity has evolved in terms of technology is fun to speculate on, for example since Grimm attacks are common and destructive, towns outside of major cities are less technologically advance because they often don’t have time to explore that and have to move from town to town quickly in an emergency.

The Grimm are excellent monsters with varying abilities that make them scary. I love the Apathy from the most recent season, and how it doesn’t just attack you like a Beowulf, Ursa, or Nevermore, but it drains away your will to fight back at all.

This show also has my favorite trope of all time MIXED TIMELINES

YOU GOT TRADITIONAL CHINESE CLOTHING AND DRESS AND ASIAN ARCHITECTURE ON TOP OF CELL PHONES TOWERS AND ALL OF THAT

this trope is so fun because it really makes a world feel unique.

The world of Naruto has all kinds of modern stuff, but until Boruto it was mixed with older tech and tradition, really selling how this is not our world.

Another thing I love: every weapon is a gun. That is SO fun.

Now as good as the show is, it does have problems. That’s inevitable though, all shows, movies, and books have problems, nothing is perfect.

Except Avatar. Avatar is flawless.

Me pointing out the issues I have with this show is by no means to say it’s bad, just to point them out.

I truly do have love for this series and I still cry about Phyrra and her death.

I love you baby.

But that being said, pointing out the issues a show has can be important for both understanding the pitfalls to avoid in our own writing, and helping creators fix issues later on.

A lot of hard work goes into making this show and I would just be an asshole if I did nothing but shit on the show.

No matter how many issues it has, I can tell the people making it love what they’re doing, and that always shines through a series no matter how many issues it has, just like a show or movie can do everything conventionally right and still be a soulless shit show.

Looking at you call of duty black ops 3.

So here’s the issues

Fight scenes

I love the fight scenes. I’ve said that, they really can be so fun to view and I find myself coming back to them a lot.

But I have issues.

Lemme just say first that I don’t like complaining against animation. Animators go through enough crap already and it feels mean to criticize them at times, but this needs to be said.

One, I hate how people throw punches in this show.

They swing so wide it’s annoying.

Okay listen. If you swing at someone with a punch this wide, and they know how to fight, it will not land. They will block or dodge. I know this because as my subscribers know, I am a martial artist. I know jujitsu and boxing, and I took taeqwondo.

This is a bad punch.

My theory is that they do it to emphasize the impact of a bit, but that’s not necessary. There are other ways to do that.

You could say “they’re animators they don’t know how fighting works.”

But Naruto exists and those animators get martial arts stuff down PAT.

Hell, avatar the last airbender depends on its animators being able to animate fights with consistent accuracy, and those characters use styles most people have never heard of like Baguazhang.

And I know this doesn’t seem like a big deal, but it is. It’s hard to really get behind fight scenes at times when the characters can’t throw a simple punch right.

And again it’s not like it’s impossible for animation to animate a fight.

There’s a scene during a fight in Naruto where Obito Uchiha kicks Kakashi, and Kakashi uses his foot to redirect the kick and pull obito off balance.

This is a real move, that people do, and it’s done accurately, but RWBY seems to struggle with accuracy in their fights. Which is fine when a character’s weapon looks like this, but not in hand to hand.

This issue comes up in sword fights too. The way Weiss fights annoys me because her sword is a rapier, and the most important characteristic of a rapier is that often times they don’t have blades, they have points, and when they do have blades, they aren’t meant for slashing. Rapiers were made to exploit the gaps in someone’s armor by stabbing them, and thus it is a thrusting sword, not a slashing one. A sword like a Katana or Khopesh would be good for slashing. Roman gladius can kind of do both, but not as good as either one.

The point is that if they’re gonna give Wiess a rapier, they need to stop animating her slashing with it. Especially when her rapier doesn’t appear to have a sharp edge.

My next complaint is wasted characters.

It’s very frustrating when RWBY takes times to show us a character, but then never uses them.

I didn’t even know sun had a full team sometimes because you never see them.

And furthermore it’s annoying when a fight scene will just stop so that a character can do a cool thing.

Oh no this robot is so hard to beat, how will we beat this dangerous and powerful robot

Oh wait, this character can solo it because the plot needs to pause so she can be cool then promptly never be seen again.

It is so frustrating and it makes it hard to actually know when a character is in danger.

It takes 20 hits to kill a Grimm in one scene, then like two in another.

And the reason for that is because the plot is being pushed aside for the sake of spectacle.

A character’s abilities will be made inconsistent for a chance to make them seem cool.

Like this scene where Tyrion is fighting qrow, he uses his tail to block bullets.

But why?

He has his Aura up, the bullets wouldn’t hurt him anyway! Then when he gets shot later after he looses his aura his tail comes off.

If he was fast enough to use his tail to block bullets he wasn’t even paying attention to, why can’t he do it now!

There is no internal consistency.

Like why are Grimm so strong if they don’t have auras? That’s not explained because they Grimm rarely serve the plot, they spectacle. Adam putting 20 kombo hits into yang to beat her makes sense. He has to wear down her aura to actually hurt her.

But 20 hits to kill a grim that then gets solo’d by a character later on?

No.

Then there’s hazel.

He annoys me.

His villainous motivation is that his sister joined a school for trained soldiers, then died because it was dangerous and now he hates Ozpin.

Dude what?

Like I get why he’s mad, but she knew the risk and someone had to sign off on her getting in for her to be able to go to beacon at all. A child can’t just register for a school especially one where it’s a known risk you could die.

Also another thing I hate is how characters will overreact to stuff in annoying ways.

This is mostly in the most recent season.

But everyone finds out the history of Ozpin and Salem’s relationship from Djinn

And then they just all hate and distrust Ozpin.

Here’s my reaction to finding out about ozpins relationship

It’s just... not that big a deal.

Okay so he was pipping the villain at one point

Nigga so was dumbldore!

It’s just annoying how Ozpin didn’t really do anything but he still was treated like he was just a bad person when he wasn’t.

That whole plot point feels empty, and I found myself more annoyed with the characters for being mad at him and wasting time, than mad at Ozpin for wanting to get laid.

My next complaint on this nitpick fest is

Shit what was I gonna say again?

Oh yea, that annoying ass military lady and her whole reason for not letting the heroes into atlas.

That was so annoying and pointless. She really had no reason not to let them through, and her getting into a giant mecha to fight them pulled me so far away from the story because it was just too ridiculous.

The mecha is for fighting Kaiju grim but it’s taken down by like five kids and their drunk grandpa.

Which like... fine but I hate it.

I hate that whole sequence.

It didn’t have to happen like that, it was another fight purely for spectacle.

It made me mad.

Plus I really really hate mecha anime and mecha fights in general.

God I hate them.

I skipped almost every mecha fight in Voltron because I hate them.

Look the point is that rwby is definitely a good show and I love almost every part of it, but these issues really pull me away from the story at times and you can really sense how much of the story is less about progression and more about increasing drama like the Ozpin thing, or looking cool.

Please watch rwby it really is worth your time, just be aware of the issues it has.

I'm glad you guys enjoy my idea. tbh, I didn't expected you to write reference from L.A. Noire since I saw them as Sherlock and Watson, lol. Here's my another idea: Kyoko Phelps & Shuichi Bekowsky and the Mystery of Twogami. Souda was looking for Twogami and thought he was lost (but in reality, he was disguised as different person). As Souda give a pic of Twogami to them, it was Byakuya. YES, BYAKUYA HAVE TO GET INVOLVED THE MESS AGAIN.

Well then @cryptidcondiment , you know who to thank for this! Also, I will use every chance available to me to spread the good game that is LA Noire.

THE IMPERSONATOR’S DAY OFF

Kyoko Phelps walked down the hallway, looking at a notebook she had been writing in.

(Kyoko) “I don’t get this at all…Somehow this book keeps filling in itself whenever I ask someone questions. Not only that, it somehow fills out the info I don’t even know about the person yet hyper accurately, and that’s not even getting to the face drawings…”

(Shuichi’s Voice) “Hey, Phelps!”

Kyoko looked up and saw Shuichi wave to her as he was talking with Kaede.

(Kyoko) “Hello Bekowsky. I take it this is the lucky lady?”

(Shuichi) “Yup. Kaede, this is my partner, Kyoko Phelps. We serve in the same desk, Traffic. Right now we’re off duty so that’s why we’re at school as of recently.”

(Kaede) “I told you to call me sweetheart Shui-…Um, hi there Kyoko! It’s nice to meet you!”

Kyoko shook hands with Kaede firmly.

(Kaede) “You’ve been treating the love of my life good haven’t you?”

(Shuichi) “K-Kaede!”

(Kyoko) “Of course. We’re partners after all. Besides, SOMEONE has to give him relationship advice-”

Kyoko turned to Shuichi with a playful smirk.

(Kyoko) “Don’t want you to end up in the doghouse after all-”

(Shuichi) “PHELPS!”

Kaede laughed heartily, before turning to Shuichi.

(Kaede) “I’m glad she has a sense of humor!”

(Shuichi) “I…don’t think that’s very funny-”

(Soda’s voice) “BYAKUYA! BYAKUYAAAAA!!!!!”

Soda frantically looked around the hallways, frantically searching for Byakuya Togami. He basically looked like a psychopath, shouting his name so loud to the point anyone could hear him from the cafeteria downstairs.

(Shuichi) “Isn’t that the Ultimate Mechanic?”

(Kaede) “Yeah, what’s he calling Byakuya for?”

(Kyoko) “Hm…Bekowsky, let’s check it out. Until next time, Kaede.”

(Kaede) “Yeah sure thing! See ya guys!”

Kaede hugged Shuichi fiercely, then waved them goodbye. Shuichi readjusted his hat, and turned to Kyoko.

(Shuichi) “You REALLY had to make that joke?!”

(Kyoko) “Oh come along my intense protege. Have a bit of fun once in a while.”

Kyoko and Shuichi walked up to Soda while displaying their badges.

(Kyoko) “Phelps and Bekowsky, LAPD. What seems to be the trouble?”

(Soda) “Oh thank god, the cops! Listen, a friend of mine has gone missing!”

(Kyoko) “You mean Byakuya Togami right? We heard you shouting his name.”

(Shuichi) “Wait, missing? What do you mean? Me and Phelps saw him a day or two ago.”

(Soda) “Huh? What do you mean? Oh! You mean that guy who LOOKS like Byakuya right? Sorry, but that ain’t him!”

(Shuichi) “H-Huh? What do you mean?”

(Kyoko) “…Humor me mister…?”

(Soda) “Soda. Kazuichi Soda.”

(Kyoko) “Mister Soda, do you have any photos of him, by any chance?”

(Soda) “Huh? Oh yeah, here ya go.”

Soda handed the two a picture of Byakuya, and both of them were shocked seeing the Togami Soda was talking about.

(Kyoko) “…Well this is new.”

(Shuichi) “Well, he uh…certainly looks like Byakuya but…bigger.”

(Soda) “Can you help me find him?! I was going to ask him something, but I’m afraid something’s happened to him!”

(Shuichi) “Well Phelps, what are you thinking?”

(Kyoko) “Hm…I wasn’t aware there was someone else who looked like Byakuya…perhaps, we should confront Byakuya ourselves. Come along.”

Shuichi nodded, and everyone followed Kyoko into the library.

(Shuichi) “Ah, of course he’s in here.”

(Kyoko) “Bya-”

(Soda) “WHAT THE HELL?! THAT’S NOT BYAKUYA! THAT’S NOT HIM AT ALL!”

(Byakuya) “…Pardon?-”

As soon as he saw Shuichi and Kyoko again, he braced himself. If this was anything like the brownie incident, is that this was going to be very fucking stupid.

(Byakuya) “You two again. 2nd time this week. What crazy mess did I get myself into this time?”

(Kyoko) “No words needed really, just look at this.”

(Shuichi) “Uh Phelps, is that a good ide-”

Byakuya spat out his tea violently, and stood up instantly, gripping the photo hard.

(Byakuya) “What’s the meaning of this?! Why is this…slob looking exactly like me?!”

(Kyoko) “That’s what me and Bekowsky want to get to the bottom of, Togami.”

(Soda) “Who are you really?! Cause you sure aren’t the Togami I know!”

(Shuichi) “I’m…gonna have to ask you to stay quiet Soda. Let the LAPD handle this and uh…You’re causing a scene.”

Soda turned around and saw lots of students look at him with a death glare as they were trying to study.

(Soda) “S-sorry…”

(Byakuya) “Let’s leave. I wish to find this imposter myself..”

(Soda) “B-Before that!”

Soda quickly walked over to the students and handed them the picture of Byakuya.

(Soda) “Have you seen this man?”

(Toko) “Nope. L-Leave me alone.”

(Sayaka) “I haven’t.”

(???) “Isn’t he right behind you?”

(Taka) “No, apologies. Also, please do not yell in the library, it is not welcome in this kind of environment.”

(Soda) “Welp, worth a try.”

(Shuichi) “…Wait, who’s that gi-”

(Kyoko) “Come along Bekowsky, or we’re gonna leave you behind.”

Shuichi shrugged, and followed Kyoko. After walking around the school, they couldn’t find him virtually anywhere. It seemed that all their questioning had come to a major roadblock.

(Byakuya) “This is getting us nowhere. I thought you two were good at your jobs.”

(Shuichi) “Not when there’s this little evidence…”

(Kyoko) “Is there something we’re overlooking?”

(Soda) “Hmm…What if…that one in the photo is an imposter?…Wait, WHAT IF THE ONE IN FRONT OF US IS THE IMPOSTER!”

(Kyoko/Shuichi) “…”

(Byakuya) “What are you talking about?! I AM THE REAL BYAKUYA TOGAMI!”

(Soda) “Oh thats full of shit! You agree with me, right Miss Phelps?!”

MAXIMUM DOUBT TIME

(Kyoko) “That is not the case, mister Soda. In fact, this entire case has been a waste of the LAPD’s time.”

(Soda) “H-Huh?!”

(Shuichi) “Oh god, here we go-”

(Kyoko) “Tell me, Soda. What do you need from this Byakuya?”

(Soda) “W-Well um..that’s very private!”

(Kyoko) “Would this happen to do something with Sonia Nevermind?”

(Soda) “HUH?!”

(Shuichi) “Me and my partner know about your thirst for the Ultimate Princess. Heck, even the whole school knows! Tell them, Togami.”

(Byakuya) “Don’t tell me tha-…”ahem”Yes, even I know that you have a thing for her. But unfortunately for you, she doesn’t have her sights on you, does she?”

(Soda) “E-EGH!”

(Kyoko) “She’s very fond of the Ultimate Breeder, Gundham Tanaka, and you were about to ask a classmate for something to impress her, weren’t you!”

(Soda) “O-Of course not! What does this have to do with Miss Sonia?!”

(Byakuya) “Everything actually, seeing how you kept messing up the LAPD’s and my questioning, you’re just after his…No, MY money, weren’t you?”

(Soda) “GAH!”

(Shuichi) “With that, I don’t think we need much more evidence, now do we? Phelps?”

(Kyoko) “Cuff him, Bekowsky.”

(Soda) “WHAT?!-”

(Kyoko) “The Bureau is gonna LOVE you, Soda. Let’s see what they think about wasting police time and resources on a wild goose chase like this!”

Shuichi handcuffed Soda, and shoved him towards Byakuya.

(Kyoko) “Alright, we’ll let you take it from here, Togami.”

(Byakuya) “Heh, with pleasure.”

(Soda) “NO, PLEASE! THIS ISN’T CONSTITUTIONAL! MISS SONIAAAA! HELP MEEEE!!!-”

As Byakuya dragged Soda away, Kyoko and Shuichi took a deep breath.

(Kyoko) “So, what do you think?”

Kyoko and Shuichi turned to the door behind them, and a voice that sounded exactly like Byakuya’s came out of it.

(Twogami’s Voice) “Not bad, not bad at all…It was nice to have a day off from being Togami for once. Looks like I made the right choice contacting the LAPD.”

(Kyoko) “Of course, Soda most likely would have recognized you, correct?”

(Twogami) “Yes…Thank you, Phelps and Bekowsky from saving me from that idiot…Speaking of, when will he realize that you two were off duty?”

(Shuichi) “Eh, most likely when the boys in blue we ordered to come here start cracking up.”

(Kyoko) “Well, we shall see you later.”

(Twogami) “You know, Phelps. It seems your sense of humor has picked up today for some reason…Not that I’m complaining, no one likes a stick in the mud detective…By the way, I’ve been meaning to ask, we’re in Japan so…Why are you called the LAPD? It stands for the Los Angeles Police Department.”

(Shuichi/Kyoko) “…”

They both looked at each other, then quickly walking away, and dodging the issue.

(Twogami) “…Guys?…Hello?…T-The door is still locked!”

Post-Case Report:

Byakuya Togami was then called out by most of the school the next day, for being so incredibly fat, and somehow losing it all in one day, and at the same time getting a wardrobe change. When he called Kyoko Phelps and Shuichi Bekowsky into question, both of them responded as if they had never done the case yesterday, making him deal with people’s bullshit for the next week and a half. At the same time, it was noted an alarmingly high amount of people were concerned about Kyoko Phelps messing with people had increased tenfold during this week alone.

Am I the only one who thinks this season is going slower than anticipated? Maybe it’s just because they kept hyping it as super fast-paced and my expectations were too high. I’m honestly feeling a little underwhelmed right now. Can’t really put my finger on why exactly, but still.

Maybe it’s because they are being so silent about r+l=j and white walker related stuff? I feel like these two things should really start driving the plot forward.

But Bran has had like 5 minutes of screentime, so no new white walker revelations there and that whole “we really need dragonglass” obsession is kinda getting boring. It doesn’t seem like he’s going to reveal anything about Jons birth to Sansa or Arya anytime soon neither.

I would have totally accepted if Tyrion and Jons entire cliff-interaction happened off screen, with Tyrion just showing up to tell Dany about the dragonglass out of nowhere. I really hope the whole conversation about Jon being a “northern fool” pays off somehow. Either by him causing his own downfall by making the same mistakes as Robb or Ned (falling for a foreign woman + trusting Cersei), being tempted by it and resisting because he learned his lesson, or doing that glorious double-agent stuff some people speculate about - acting like a “northern fool”, but fooling everyone else instead.

Even if that scene was meant to pave the road for a positive romantic / sexual / platonic / familial / political / whatever relationship between Jon and Dany, it’s very sloppy writing. They should form a bond through their own actions, not through Tyrion playing wing-man, telling each of them how great the other person is. If that was the only purpose of that scene I am going to scream.

That screen-time could have been used for way more interesting things. I mean, we could have gotten some unexpected Jon interacts with free-flying dragon moment instead. Imagine Jon standing on that cliff, but instead of Tyrion, Viserion/Rhaegal shows up, lands in front of him, they both stare at each other for a while before the dragon takes off again. Or even better, Tyrion showing up after that, witnessing that little interaction and looking a bit ~suspicious~ at Jon during and after their “I’m an idiot”, “Dany isn’t so bad” conversation.

I just feel like Jons targ-heritage should start to influence the plot soon. Especially now that he is in Dragonstone, face-to-face with the other last living targaryen and we know about his true parentage. I like all the little hints with Jon saying he isn’t a stark and the dragon flying by at the perfect time, I suppose it read the script, but I would want an actual character to hint at it. I want something more tangible. His entire conversation with Dany would have been way more interesting if the audience (especially casual viewers) were more aware of his situation. It would have simply had a bigger emotional impact if we already “knew” or at least strongly suspect that Jon “was born to rule the seven kingdoms” (according to the targ line of succession), that he is “the rightful ruler”. I absolutely loved Jon standing up for the north and telling her how it is, but it would have had more potential. Even Jons death and resurrection is kept a secret, ie hold back from influencing the story, because .... I don’t know. I don’t feel like we have time to set up new mysteries, when there are so many old ones waiting to be lifted.

I really hope that r+l=j will come up in the winterfell-plot somehow, because Littlefinger - without this peculiar information - has kinda stopped being a worthwhile villain. Seriously, Sansa is so done with his shit, neither Bran nor Arya are prone to manipulation, Lord Royce hates him, what vital threat does he pose to the starks if not for some juicy r+l=j info ? And the following implications concerning a certain redheads and northern kings romantic potential) But instead of making some sneaky comments about Jon parleying with the dragon queen, we get a weird metaphysical ... whatever that was.

Jons true parentage is like the biggest twist off the entire series and having it only impacting the story in the very, very, very last episodes feels … unworthy of it? I’m not even talking about revealing the truth to Jon or another major character, but they should just do ... something ... with it.

The same thing goes for Bran. Him being the three-eyed raven should really start to be important and crucial to the plot. I am going to assume that it will be very important ~somehow~, but until now he was nothing but a script-page with EXPOSITION written all over it. If he’s going to spend the rest of the season sitting in winterfell, devoid of all emotion, saying ominous shit and doing nothing but figuring out the “big mystery” who Jon’s dad is.... I’ll be really disappointed. I need Bran to be as important as he should be. I need Bran to be more than what he is now. Considering that we are moving towards the series ultimate conclusion, it should happen soon. I’m worried that he will stay in camp easy-exposition, only to ex-machina the shit out of his undefined powers out of nowhere.

Sam’s time at the citadel is similar in this aspect. Like what did he really accomplish there? Finding out that there is dragonglass in dragonstone (duuhhh) and healing Jorah. He is sitting on this huge mountain of fascinating information, the biggest accumulation of knowledge in all of westeros and we do not learn anything new by him being there. I’m rather content with the season so far, yes some of the writing is pretty sloppy, but what else is new. I don’t know, it’s just that the pacing feels ...kinda weird. It feels like there is so much going on, but they are holding back the most vital elements of the story for ... some reason, I suppose. Even Danys invasion feels like it hasn’t even really started yet. I don’t know most of these major plotlines just kinda stand there without having much movement themselves. They threw the tower of joy scene at us in the last finale and haven’t done anything with it. Keep in mind, we are already almost halfway through season 7.

The only two incidents that seem to really push the “big plot” in any direction are the whole Euron and Cersei situation and Jon meeting Dany. On second viewing even that long anticipated meeting feels a bit drawn-out and under-used, when considering it’s potential. I’m not saying that anything in the first three episodes necessarily falls into the “filler”-category, that’s not it. But there are only 10(!) episodes left. None of this would bother me if the last two seasons weren’t as short, but under these circumstances our major characters feel a bit too .. stationary.

The one exception would be Cersei, her plot is the only one I would call “dynamic”. It develops from scene to scene, she actively shapes her surroundings and is faced with new challenges or simply different situations almost every time she comes back on screen. Jon, Sansa, Arya, Bran, Dany, Sam, etc. mostly seem to talk about the stuff, they already talked about in the last scene, sometimes with a different character or a tiny bit of new information. Or they talk about things that happened to other characters. Seriously, Cersei already went through an entire arc, while everyone else feels like they are just finished with setting the stage. She is the most interesting, engaging character right now. There, I said it.

Jon started to actively further the plot by coming to dragonstone, but the Jon’s “big issue” in the second half of episode 3 was literally that he is stuck on Dragonstone and can’t leave. I actually enjoyed his little discussion with Dany very much, them meeting is a crucial step towards the final conclusion , finally coming closer to an answer to the big question behind all this “will they fight or fuck or both or switch between those ...”. But all the tension build in that interaction immediately dissolved when the ended with the half-baked conclusion of him being her prisoner somewhat, but not really.

This was only supposed to be like one or two paragraphs of mild complaining, but it ended up being way longer, because I just don’t know how to accurately put this into words. So thanks for sticking with me until the end. I’ll say it one more time, Cersei is the only character who seems to actually make both personal and political progress. Maybe they are finally done with putting all the pieces in place and can start with really pushing the story foward, but in that case, maybe cutting the episode number wasn’t such a good idea.

A bunch of stuff happens, but it doesn’t feel like stuff actually happens. Does that make any sense? Does anyone get what I mean? Is it only me?

Just curious- what are some of your favorite things about Tamatoa?

Hoo boy, I’ve been thinking about this for a while, so this will be long and somewhat spoilers-y, so I hope you’re prepared for an info-dump. Also, apologies if I get sidetracked a bit. There’s a lot.

I think what initially drew me to Tamatoa was how out-of-place he seemed with the rest of the movie at first. Everyone else is either a human (or at least humanoid) or a non-speaking creature, and then here’s this giant talking crab monster with a song that doesn’t fit in with the rest of the soundtrack (that’s not to say that it’s a bad song though; I love it in every language I’ve heard it in so far), and with a voice that (at least I thought) had a more obvious accent than everyone else’s. It wasn’t enough to distract me from the rest of the movie, which is a good thing, but by the time the credits came up (along with his post-credits bit) I had to know what was up with him. (Aside from the whole “my fave is a crab” deal; I’ve had a love for decapods ever since Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald gave us Corphish, and I’d already picked out coconut crabs as a favorite because of Crabrawler, so that part at least made sense to me.) I ended up looking up his song on YouTube and listened to it again, only since this was an almost three-and-a-half-minute thing I could re-watch as much as I wanted which meant I could pay more attention to this part specifically and hopefully figure out exactly what it was about him in particular that fascinated me so much.

One of those things was that, looking at some of what he does during his song, he must’ve been a challenge to animate properly, namely with the coloration of his claws. It took me a long time to figure out that his claws seemingly turning into different colors wasn’t because of some kind of inconsistency, but rather because the lighting in relation to where he was in the area and which position he was in regarding the light source was effecting their coloration. (It is a cool touch, but for me it makes it hard to figure out what color they should be when it comes to making fanart of him with his claws.) There are other small details I noticed about his appearance, like how he has scratches at the “ends” of his claws, but I think the more subtle details I picked up on were the ones for his eyes. Like, one pupil is bigger than the other (makes sense given who he was based on/inspired by), his eye stalks can move independently from each other in a non-synchronized way, and how his eyelids have a small, raised edge on them. Another, more obvious fun thing would probably have to be some of the screenshots of him (especially regarding his facial expressions, a lot of which feature those distinct teeth of his), they’re just…

They’re just so fun to look at! His Disney wiki page says that the animators had fun working on him, and I feel like those expressions show it. I think whoever’s decision it was to not give him a face that’s more accurate to what an actual coconut crab’s looks like in favor of one somewhat more identical to Sebastian’s made a good call.

Another thing I’ve found is that, story and character-wise, I don’t think he’s entirely as insignificant as some people say he is. Not only because he serves as something of an obstacle that Moana and Maui need to overcome in order to move the plot forward, but because we do find out a little more about this movie’s take on Maui through him. We find out Maui is an inspiration to not only humans but other sentient non-human creatures as well, and more importantly we find out about Maui’s more secret past, which not only does Tamatoa know, but he uses in order to make Maui feel weak and exposed, possibly in an attempt to get back at him for tearing one of his legs off all those years ago. Given that he knows about this, it’s entirely possible that he knows Maui more personally than anybody else in the film does, which leaves one to wonder what their past history with each other was like before the leg thing happened. Something else he seems to be good at is knowing how to try and get under other people’s skin with what little knowledge he’s given from others since it seemed like he might’ve been trying to get to Moana by bringing up her grandmother and (correctly) guessing what she told her, and then immediately following it up with telling her that her grandmother was wrong. Either that, or he knows what Moana’s grandmother said because that’s what his own grandmother told him, but he doesn’t care much for what the elders had to say given how callously he brought up how he ate his own grandma. Speaking of character comparisons, in a way, Tamatoa can also be seen as a foil to Maui: they’re both strong, vain when it comes to their physical appearances (Maui with his tattoos and Tamatoa with the acquired treasures on his shell), but Maui does what he does in order to make others happy and feel good about what he’s done for them, while Tamatoa seems to do what he does to make others fear him and feel good about his status of power over them. I think Tamatoa also kinda serves to show that if you do things out of pure vanity and don’t show any genuine care for others, things will ultimately not go your way since, out of all the characters in the movie, he’s the only one who gets a truly unhappy ending. If this movie didn’t already have a more dangerous antagonist in it, I think he has the potential make-up of an interesting main villain, but I won’t complain about what we ended up with; he’s just threatening and entertaining enough for my tastes.

With all that being said, the one major thing I thought of right away was that there was something about his voice that I really liked. I’ve had a soft spot for certain voices for a long time now, but I’m usually bad on picking up on “new” voices where I don’t know who voices them, if that makes sense. Since the official video lists his voice actor, Jemaine Clement, before the name of the song and the movie, I looked him up and both read and watched a few things about him, those mostly being interviews he did regarding Moana, where I found out a few more things:

Clement’s accent isn’t just something he made up for the movie like I first thought it was (in my defense, I don’t know many people from New Zealand), and I found it really adorable the first time I heard it?

Clement is bi-racial, with his maternal half being Maori, which is probably part of how he got picked for this role (the most notable parts of voice cast are of Polynesian descent, minus Alan Tudyk, the voice of Heihei, the rooster who doesn’t actually have lines). Apparently this isn’t common knowledge though, given how many people were and still are confused by why he was in it?

Clement was told to do his David Bowie impression for this part since that was a thing he did in his two-man band Flight of the Conchords (which took me until just recently to realize that’s a pun), even though that wasn’t what he was expecting to do when he first got the part.

This isn’t the first time I’ve heard Clement sing, since a couple different internet reviewers I’ve seen have used a couple clips from the Flight of the Conchords series in their reviews before, and because of one YouTube commercial that was played in front of videos for a while. This isn’t even the first animated movie character I’ve heard him voice, said character being Nigel from Rio. (And no, I don’t count Jerry the Minion from the first Despicable Me movie; nobody should.)

Clement was very surprised when he found out how many people love and relate to Tamatoa. He seems fine with it though, which is nice.

That led to me wanting to find out more of whatever was going on behind the scenes with Tamatoa, and I found more than I was expecting for a character with overall very little screentime. The things I found?

Early on in the development process he was intended to be a headless giant, which would be both closer to a traditional creature from Polynesian mythology and fit his name more since Tamatoa means “warrior”. I’m not sure when they decided to change him to a crab, but I guess I can maybe understand why? Still, kinda interesting.

Upon hearing that Clement was chosen for the part, Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote “Shiny” with his David Bowie impression in mind, hence a huge part of how Tamatoa turned out to be what he’s like in the movie (which explains the different-sized pupil thing I mentioned earlier).

Clement was nervous about performing “Shiny”, which gave me an even better appreciation for Auli’i Cravalho (Moana’s voice actress), since if the guy who’s sung for years was nervous about the one song he was given, then I can only imagine how much pressure she must’ve been under with the songs she had to perform, especially since she’s a young newcomer.

Tamatoa is secretly insecure about himself, which was vaguely hinted at in the last line he has in the movie itself (with him lying defenseless on his back and pouting as he weakly asks “Did you like the song?”), but possibly could’ve been a little more apparent had some of his material not been cut out of the movie. Some of the lyrics from the demo version of “Shiny” that didn’t make the final cut were “it’s never enough/love yourself, get your armor up/they can’t see your heart is a vacancy,” which were supposed to be belittling Maui for wanting the humans’ approval so much, but given how similar he and Maui are and how differently the lyrics I bolded and italicized are delivered in comparison to the rest of the song’s demo, it sounds like they easily could’ve doubled as Tamatoa briefly lapsing into talking about himself again and/or having a moment of genuine pity for Maui. The former possibility would suggest that the reason he collects so much bright junk to put onto his shell (outside of it being an easy way to attract prey) would be to make himself seem more visually interesting to others, meaning he does care what others think of him. The latter would suggest that, while he clearly no longer looks up to Maui as he once did, he still has some basic sympathy for him.

Speaking of cut material, there was an interview where Clement talked about how he improvised a couple things going off the whole “I ate my grandma” line. One improvised part he talked about was how he made up a long apology for eating his grandma which somehow left him in tears, and another where Tamatoa admitted that he was only joking about eating his grandma and how he would never do that. I really hope to hear this and whatever else didn’t make it into the film one day, because I really want to know if it sounds anything like it does in my imagination. He also mentioned how he wished that Tamatoa had some more self-realization, and I kinda feel the same way, honestly.

People relate to him because they too want to be appealing but feel like on the inside “they’re actually just a crab”. I feel he’s relatable because he acts like he’s a tough guy who doesn’t really care about others, but he secretly does seek others’ approval of the things that he does.

In short, there’s a lot more that I like about him than I first thought, and thus I have a lot of favorite things about him. He’s just lots of fun for me to think about.
