Nico and Percy's dynamic through the series is eternally funny to me, because it's just. like.

Percy's having a constant mental struggle between his fatal flaw of loyalty with a promise he made to Bianca to protect Nico, versus his Big 3 kid desire to maim other Big 3 kids / Poseidon descendant urge to totally maim Nico specifically. He hates Nico so so much. He thinks Nico's annoying and weird at best, and creepy/sketchy when he's older. The only positive thoughts Percy has towards Nico are "He's Bianca's brother and Bianca was my friend and I owe her/He's Hazel's brother and Hazel is my friend and would kill me if I was mean to him," "He's a powerful asset and useful ally (if questionable)," and "He's kinda pathetic and I feel maybe a little bad about it." Percy has multiple occasions throughout the series where he strongly considers - and on one occasionally actually goes through with - throttling Nico.

Meanwhile, Nico is following around Percy like a lost puppy. He explicitly can never bring himself to even dislike anything about Percy no matter how hard he tries. He has a whole bit in BoO where he's mentally going "UGH he's so stupid BUT IT'S ENDEARING HOW DARE HE." He's totally smitten. He's making deals with his dad for Percy. He's making convoluted plans to help Percy stand a chance against Kronos. During the entirety of BoTL it's like he's playing tsundere - "I'm helping NOT PERCY SPECIFICALLY with this quest! Me helping Percy would be SILLY because I DEFINITELY HATE HIM." Then he proceeds to show up to Percy's birthday party to basically ask him on a weird date and spend the entire next book scrambling around trying to help him or protect him or impress him. And Percy could not give less of a shit.

Just. That dynamic is so funny to me. Percy is the founder of the Nico Protection Club in that he's the one they're all protecting Nico from and meanwhile Nico is throwing himself at Percy to the point where the literal god of gay love calls him out on it.

imagine if the shen family was actually a part of the mafia. and shen yuan just never knew.

like his Family is rich and they are all super close. he’s even in contact with some of his distant relatives pretty often, which is kinda cool for him, he’s sure that this isn’t the case for most families so he considers himself lucky to know the extent of his family tree. sure, some of them seem to have lost a marble or two but what family doesn’t have a couple oddballs in their midst, you know?

and its not just sy’s comical obliviousness that contributes to this. his family is well aware that sy is not suited for this life style- especially his siblings. they grew up watching him get himself into all sorts of weird situations and putting himself at a disadvantage simply because he’s too nice. he can try and deny it all he wants (just like how he denies he’s gay- c’mon sy everyone can tell you are not straight) but his sense of justice would only burden him if he were to work for the Family. not to mention his sense of self preservation is absolute shit and they don’t want to have to babysit him his whole life- and he probably doesn’t want that either!

so they send him off to college, help him find an apartment, and basically do everything they can to help him start off on his own, away from the Family. his siblings had to do a whole lot of convincing to let this happen btw- this kind of thing usually isn’t allowed, but sy doesn’t know anything that could be used against the Family, so they make an exception in his case. better for them to not have a deadweight sticking around either is what they say but they all dote on him anyways and refuse to admit they care about him. sy definitely picked up this line of reasoning from them btw.

shen yuan is a little upset and confused that his Family seems eager to send him off (it’s not like they can’t afford for him to live with them after all- both of his older brothers still live in the Family’s massive house and even his aunts and uncles are living there??). he manages to recover quickly though. at least now he can read his web novels in piece without prompting any dick jokes (his cousins had a field day when they found his account with all of his pidw comments…). now he just needs to figure out how to live by himself.

it’s not that sy is incapable of taking care of himself- it’s just that he’s so used to having other people with him that he never understood how much they were doing for him until they were no longer around. but that’s fine, living on your own is just another learning curve and sy is willing to rise up to the challenge. which he did, by the way! he found a job and pays his taxes and even though that isn’t much he still gives himself a mental pat on the back for it. he is still in contact with his siblings, he never misses an update for pidw which he totally doesn’t get excited for and his life is going great.

……until he accidentally eats some expired food and dies.

it’s been like 3 months since tsc and I still can’t get Jean Moreau out of my head.

Jean and his hopes, Jean and his fears, Jean and all the little things he never let cross his mind that come to him unbidden in the middle of the night as he stares at the ceiling of a room too bright. Do you think the big open window that forces him to know the time of day prevents him from sleeping? Do you think he looks down at himself before bed to change his clothes and has a brief moment of sheer panic when he sees a blue t-shirt instead of the usual black? Do you think hearing the traffic outside his window is jarring to him? Or is he used to white noise in the nest?

do you think Laila asked him to try on a turtleneck shirt that first horrible day they went shopping? She was only thinking of how handsome he would look in it, how Jeremy would react to seeing Jean in something so casual and comfy. Do you think she was shocked when Jean stormed out of the change room and threw it at her? Do you think she ran forward to go off on him for being so rude but stopped when she heard his laboured breathing and saw the claw marks on his neck. Do you think it took Jean the rest of the day to convince himself he wasn’t being choked?

do you think he catches himself one day wishing that Elodie had been a Wesninski? That she had a mother who loved her enough to steal her away and go into hiding so that she would never belong to anyone that would do her harm? Do you think he doesn’t quite dismiss the thought fast enough to stop himself from wishing that he too, had been a Wesninski? Do you think he’s especially pissy to Neil after that and Neil just thinks he’s being an asshole like Kevin?

Does Jean ever see Riko in his teammates? Does the metal grate of the helmet ever disguise a striker’s face a little too well, so Jean ends up apologizing to a very confused Derek after a drill for not properly utilizing Raven techniques? Does he ever see a racquet swing up above his head and he just freezes as he waits for the inevitable crunch of breaking bones? What about when it’s him and a striker and the stairs to the change room, and he tries to get as far away as possible? Does he ever say “yes captain” in Japanese to a shocked Jeremy?

what if he messes up during a game because he subconsciously passes to players wearing black instead of the bright Trojan red? What if Laila loses him in the mall because he fell into line with someone wearing black and Wymack wasn’t there to hold him back this time? What if the first time a coach ever raises his voice at him he responds in Japanese? What if he cuts himself with a knife and for a moment he swears Riko is in the room? What if Neil speaks to him in French and he calls Neil “Kevin” out of habit? What if Jeremy is rambling on about exy and Jean calls HIM “Kevin”? What if Cat buys him a magnet and he finds himself wanting to ask which city it’s from?

just… Jean Moreau. He will not get out of my head.

....just kidding! I absolutely ship it. Everyone knows I ship it. If you didn't know, congrats! Now you know! Ahem, thank you for indulging me, my friend.

What made you ship it? The funny answer is "spite". Back in, oh I don't know, maybe January of 2018, @amaronith and I were complaining about Venom Inc. and That Scene™ in the Alpha issue like "haha what if Eddie and Flash just got together instead of fighting. seems like the only way they can solve this".

The real answer is that AFTER we made that joke I started thinking about it and I was like "oh shit they actually have a lot in common and the Venom Symbiote is obviously in love with both of them... holy shit this might actually be a good ship. hot damn."

The ship is still largely out of spite for Venom Inc, but it's grown into so much more than that. I really like digging into all the characters and their respective relationships with each other and how it can all lead up to the three of them finding what makes it work.

What are your favorite things about the ship?

HMMM. Well. There was this moment from the Savage Six arc in Remender's run on Agent Venom...

...mostly because this is, at least to me, the first time we see Eddie address Venom with some like... modicum of the love he felt for the symbiote once upon a time. Like for a brief second there, he believes that maybe there's a part of the symbiote, regardless of who it's with, that has just saved him. And he's stunned. It's glorious.

There's also the glorious tension-filled Hallway Scene in Cullen Bunn's half of that same Venom volume, and I know that this one is precisely from #35:

I know that technically Eddie is Toxin here but MAN this scene was insane for that. Like. Holy shit.

Aaaand despite all my gripes about it, I have to hand this one to Donny Cates and Iban Coello. It's absolutely gorgeous. I'm pretty much internally screaming every time I see these panels. I don't really like the writing in this scene, I don't feel it's very indicative of what I think Eddie and Flash's relationship up to this point should be, buuuuuuut it's very sweet and very tender. I think they should kiiiiiiiss.

Overall I think there's just SO much potential to explore all they have in common, between complicated family relationships and complicated romantic relationships and both having grown up Catholic and their really different connections to Spider-Man, there is SO. MUCH. And the symbiote knows them, and it knows their hearts, and while I think if forced to choose between them it ultimately would.. but I would rather it not have to.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

I do find this kind of a funny question because I know there are people who think that this ship existing at all is an "unpopular opinion" in and of itself. But I don't think there's any real grounds to the idea that the symbiote isn't willing to share its host with another lover - especially if that other party is willing to accept symbiote+host as a package deal. I think it would be very normal for any bonded pair, for the human side to still desire a relationship with another humanoid.

There's this... particular way that Eddie isolates himself after a certain point in comics, right around the mid-90s when he leaves San Francisco I think, that really bothers me. Do I think he needs a romantic relationship outside the symbiote to have a happy and fulfilling life? Certainly not. But I also don't think it's going to be detrimental to him or his bond with the symbiote.

I guess the only other "unpopular opinion" I might have is that by making Eddie hold hands with Flash I would also expect him to get drawn into Flash's social circle. Flash is at his core a Spider-Man character and especially my more recent fics I like to lean into that. Some people don't like the idea of Venom being closer to the Spidey cast, but the truth is that I think their best stories are when we remember that Eddie and Flash are really very ordinary guys.

And they are both in love with a space alien. (And each other.)

when i scroll through the stranger things tag it makes me more and more sad how little people care about lucas/caleb. it really does. like here’s this little boy who’s just as important and nerdy and funny and silly and serious and sweet and kind as anyone on the show/cast. and let’s not pretend it’s not blatant racism cause it is. in season 1 lucas was distrustful and he could be mean to el and that caused people not to like him. then in season 2 billy hargrove came into the scene. this white boy who abused his stepsister, bullied and harassed steve and beat the shit outta him and who said there were certain kinda people max shouldn’t be around. specifically talking about lucas because of him being black, making him a racist. and people adored him. defended him. started shipping him with steve. did everything in their power to justify all of his behavior. advocated heavily for a redemption storyline. doing something they didn’t and wouldn’t ever do for lucas. and in season 4 caleb delivered one of the most moving scenes in season 4 and it gets overshadowed and overlooked by any and everything eddie munson and steddie and nancyxrobin and byler. anyway the character lucas deserves better and caleb definitely deserves better and i hate y’all and y’all ugly :)
