Yknow, I think this passage really captures how Ouyang views Esen, especially in contrast with how Baoxiang views Esen. Ouyang geuinely believes the best of Esen, he genuinely belives that Esen is good and pure and kind and that it's himslef that is taining him into being otherwise. And while Ouyang is right in that he's technically responsible for Esen’s current emotional state (he did very much kill Esen’s dad and frame his brother for it, that is very much a thing he just did), for once it isn't his fault for the everything else going on with Esen?

I do think Esen is generally good-natured, and tries to be kind and generous to those he loves, but it's very clear that Ouyang has reduced him to JUST that in his head. He only sees Esen’s best qualities as inherent to him, and all the bad ones are Ouyang's fault somehow. He blames himself for Esen not understanding him (because there's something wrong with him, and even when he's mad at Esen for not caring enough to notice certain things he justifies it in his head by making it about his own unmanliness or whatever and Esen is just to perfect for that), for any failure in battle (yeah you're the general but Esen also approved this hes your boss dude), and generally for any moment where Esen exhibits less than stellar behaviour/capacity/etc. When in reality, we have a lot of moments where Esen is just sort of a dick, many of which are pre-ouyang (courtesy of HWDtW wbx flashbacks, which, granted, are also biased but my point still stands). We see Esen's constant and usually unjustified frustration with wbx and sometimes Ouyang, we see him be dismissive of the things they tell him, in the pre-order reward its pretty much stated that he makes a habit of dumping Ouyang outside brothels for hours while he goes inside to get laid, in one of his first scenes we see how much he enjoys it when Ouyang spends the whole morning tormenting Altan (altho tbf he kinda deserved it, altan suuuccckkss), and in general Esen just kinda treats people like crap sometimes. He's snapish and short-tempered and stubborn and imperious, loves whining about stuff, and is a shitty brother and best friend. He's got a lot of good qualities too, like how he's one of the few people that treats Ouyang with respect and tries to treat him as an equal, how his first reaction when wbx is insulted is to come to his defense (even if wbx usually foils his attempts by immediately clapping back and storming off), how we see him recognize he gets frustrated witj wbx too easily and tries to hold his temper back, how he immediately self-sacrifices to save Ouyang from his dad, how even after thinking wbx killed their dad he does really want to forgive him.

My point is, Esen is trying, but he's a very flawed human being, and Ouyang just can't seem to grasp that. He looks at him with rose-colored glasses. And it's so interesting that amongst all the shitty things Ouyang has done (and this duology really just is Ouyang and WBX fuck up yuan dynasty china to truly Epic proportions), the one he feels worst about is the one that isn't actually his fault (sorta). He may have killed Chaghan and been the catalyst for Esen's emotional blow up, but he isn't responsible for Esen having the capacity to burn WBX's books. That was Esen's decision. He hasn't somehow manipulated Esen into an eviler, crueler version of himself by virtue of existing evil-y and eunuch-y and revengefully im his vicinity. Esen was always capable of this, even if we take out Ouyang's actual manipulations, and I think this whole I-tainted-hin mentality really encapsulates how fucked up their relationship and Ouyang's mental state are in general. After all, Ouyang doesn't feel bad about the murder, or the framing, and he feels guilt about causing Esen pain, but most of all, he feels absolutely terrible that he's shattered what he sees as Esen’s purity, which in reality is mostly just the pedestal he himslef put him on. Man, what a fucked up little guy.

ok horror didn't go through all the different hundreds and thousands of resets that dust (and killer) went through sure but like. he went through something id consider pretty similar???? because through 7 years there HAD to have been a plethora of humans falling down into horrortale like we can see the countless amount of people that died there in toriel's home or in blue snow or in grillby's or even just that first human that aliza hides behind when she first enters snowdin!!!!!!!

and (i dont really know where this rant is going i will not lie 💀) horror (the prick he is) has to see all these humans he has to meet them and introduce him to all of them and at what point does it just turn into routine for him?? they all just blend into one skin colored bipedal figure and the only important part of them are their insides (which i could go on and on about how gross that probably is 🙁🙁) and how them eventually all fall to their deaths

everyone in horrortale is far too gone to particularly care anyways if aliza wasn't so smart and lucky (plot armor SMH) nobody except horror and paps would probably remember her name. and horror would only remember to add a name to the list of "spices" that are in papyrus's spaghetti and then forget it all again. it's all just an endless cycle of human falls down and eventually dies. nobody in horrortale cares enough (if the human doesnt make some sort of big event happen like how aliza stood up to undyne (i doubt snowdin monsters gaf about her b4 that aside from eating her)) and in the end theyll just turn into food again and then the cycle repeats. its kinda like a reverse dusttale (❓❓❓) where instead of the monsters dying over and over to the human's hands it's humans dying over and over to horror's hands

and now that i've established that 🤓👆 time to tie the trio into this! i mean technically dusttale is a loops of both those things happening with the human killing the underground over and over and then dust killing them in the end??? so i think both dust and horror could relate to that?????

a repeated cycle of a human entering the underground and eventually dying,,,, feeling everything go back to a fixed state (literally with dust's resets and a bit more metaphorically with snowdin not caring all that much in horrortale)

having to start off disgusted with killing and then eventually learning to find enjoyment in it (likely because satisfaction of death is the only reprise from the repetitive slog and boredom that is their aus),,,,

somehow feeling guilt for everyone in their world because of what you've doomed them to by your own hands but also being over it and having grown apathetic. theyre still alive. dust sees his underground alive all the time and so does horror his underground's still (mostly) alive. but dust's underground doesnt survive longer than a few minutes now when they see eithe him or the human (so does it even count as life or is it just a barely fufilled light snuffed out) and horror practically already considers them all dead men walking and theyll all probably die one day anyway with how things are in horrortale so whats the point in even trying and doing something fufilling when everything is so so so shit??? (on dust's end this next similarity is ambiguous :3)

& also what they did to their respective papyruses and how they feel??? ik horror probably feels like shit for tricking papyrus into eating humans but he did the right thing (in his eyes. his EYE). he made the right choice to trick him even if it was bad it was the only thing he could do to help snowdin (sure as hell better than undick's choice to try and use him as cannon fodder for the core) and dust i feeeeel would have a similar thought process. papyrus shouldnt die he doesnt deserve to die but its what needs to be done. he's giving papyrus the longer end of the stick by killing him because its better than being killed by the HUMAN. he doesnt like it but he does it anyway because its what "needs" to be done!!! more similarity,,,,,,, esuaghhhh mtt parallel,,,,,,,

Little interaction I just thought about: helping Henry getting dressed up, like buttoning up his shirt, putting his tie around his neck, and just... leaving little teasing touches (and kisses!!) around his neck and chest, getting more and more deliberate just to make him slowly lose his cool and temper;;;

you, dear anon, must not have the faintest of clues as to what you just did to me. sedation is no longer an option, and neither is institutionalization. i need to be taken out. i happen to be a complete and utter devotee of small, domestic, mundane tasks interpreted in a romantic context. the little things. i go absolutely ballistic. this is no exception.

i imagine this either taking place in the morning whilst getting ready for class, or in the evening whilst getting ready for some sort of special occasion. let's say julian has invited henry to some kind of exhibition, or a gala of sorts, and he has taken the liberty of stringing you along as his plus-one (or not, if we stay more in-character — merely having you get him ready to go out). regardless, you'd help him: in an evening scenario, he would obviously look more formal than usual — festive, even — which would truthfully maim you.

you would stand before him, buttoning his crisp, pristine shirt, your fingers outright trembling. you'd avoid eye contact, the tips of your ears practically glowing with heat; you simply wouldn't be able to suppress the bodily reaction. a sea would stir in your ears — a remote, yet persistent ringing. you'd prance the realm of insanity, albeit gracefully so. before you'd get to fasten the few topmost buttons, you'd therefore lean in and press a few heated kisses into his bare chest, which would be rising and falling placidly. henry wouldn't react at first. only when you will have done the last button and started dabbing kisses into his neck and jawline whilst roaming his front with your palms would he muster up poise to respond.

he'd be quite stern about it, too, "tie, dear. don't get too distracted." he'd hand the accessory over to you, then, after having pried your palms away from his torso as a subtle warning. your fingers would continue trembling as you'd wind the tie around his neck and fasten it for him, practically itching to touch him some more — which you would proceed to do the very moment you're done. your hands would wrap around his neck and you'd rise unto your tiptoes to kiss him, as a response to which his head would tilt upward, away from you.

through gritted teeth, he'd order, "behave. i don't have time for these antics." the frustration would be dripping from his tongue, and he would catch your exploring wrists in his much larger palms, directing them away from himself.

infiltrated by utter desperation, you'd lustfully propose, "if you spared me ten more minutes, i could relieve us both." and with this offer, you'd mean anything — you'd be willing to give him anything if he had sufficient lenience to let you do so. and yet...

went through and still going through my annual tgc1812 relisten but it's particularly potent this year and i'm reading war and peace because of it. i can't believe one of the most iconic lines from dust and ashes came from a war general HAHA.. I was thinking, would it have been funner if i had read the book first before listening to the musical? but tbh i think tgc1812 is way more digestible than the book and encountering musical references in the book is so fun. it's a lot easier to identify quotes from the musical referenced from the book than if i were to have read the book first and recall which quote in its 600 page narrative a particular lyric is from. but anyway it's been one of my quiet pleasures lately...
