So, as someone who has been using CSP for years, i can say that EX has a lot of quality of life features that I find are worth it but i do use the 3D, animation and comic/zine features alot and having un restricted acess to everything makes everything waaaaay easier.

If you have Pro already, wait for one of the the big sales that pops up like every 3 or 4 months to get it at like 50% off.

As for the subscription vs. perpetual license, it's a bit confusing, but basically whats going on is that CSP is going back to their model when they were Manga Studio and releasing a new updated version every year or so (right now we're on version 3.0)

Each version has a slew of new features, and once you buy the license, it's yours forever, but if you want to access those features early, you need the subscription.

Like I had version 2.0, but version 2.1 had access to 3D head models. If I really wanted those head models, i would get the subcriptoon to access it.

But i really wasn't hurting for them, so I waited the year until version 3.0 came out with all the 2.x features and then some included.

It should be noted that if you have version 1.0, you must upgrade to versions 2.0 before you can get 3.0 >.>

And if you are using a phone or a tablet, you can only use the subscription model.

TL;DR

If you have Pro already, wait until the sale to upgrade to EX.

If you don't have the program yet and are on a computer, wait until a sale to buy the latest version of the program (Pro or EX). Otherwise, you will have to upgrade multiple times for the latest version.

Tumblr and The Old Internet Re-Awakens, An Opinion Essay

This is going to be a super long post about my thoughts on the current state of the internet, with a chunk of what I'm about to say having been stuff I've already said elsewhere on other sites. To save your dash, I'll be putting a READ MORE break.

The fact that Twitter and Reddit have basically been destroyed by their own hubris is both hilarious and sad. It's funny because "ha ha rich man's hubris" but also sad because this is very emblematic of the current direction many social media companies that have been at the top for too long are going.

Ever since the muskrat purchased Twitter, it was clear from the beginning that something seriously wrong had happened, with worse decisions to follow. Something I hadn't realized was just how extensive the ripple effects of this would be. Reddit is now being destroyed by their leader's desire for more and more money, as if they needed any more.

I've been having this conversation with my friends via Discord and with strangers on the Starmen dot net forums. The writing is on the walls. The internet is moving towards a future that caters to advertisers more than its users. If there's even the slightest hint of getting more money by screwing over users, the higher ups of a given site will be chomping at the bit.

Where does that leave us?

Well, with Reddit and Twitter both now in a state of complete and total self-destruction, albeit rather slowly, we have seen an influx of new and returning users. Fantastic! I love when an old place gets new life breathed into it.

That being said, I don't believe that Tumblr is the bastion of The Old Internet, far from it, and many of you would agree.

Instead, I think that the resurgence in Tumblr's popularity could be just the first step towards the return of The Old Internet. We have the power to go back to the days of making our own websites. Information on web design and web programming are available online for free, in addition to many places offering free hosting services for a basic website or blog that don't need many bells or whistles (just don't go to GoDaddy).

Tumblr, in my opinion, once you know how to use the advanced editing tools, can make for a great "Baby's First Web Blog." There are some users on here that have made GORGEOUS blogs that will absolutely blow you away.

What about peer-to-peer communications?

We've seen that Discord has been another victim to the plague that is internet gentrification. They've removed the discriminators for usernames, had a store put in, and so many other little changes that have consistently annoyed the end users.

That being said... Discord is not going to be falling apart anytime soon. It's still a fantastic way to connect with many people at once and have quick access to all your different communities.

However, you could make the case, and I certainly try to, that internet forums fulfill the same thing. It is true that forums for many topics have drifted into the void of internet history, but is that not simply the nature of the internet? Communities sprout up, thrive, have an internal way, break apart, and start anew. We've seen that with many Discord servers, albeit rather small ones.

I will still hold my ground that forums should be revitalized if we truly want to go back to the days of old.

What does the future hold?

I... don't know. Despite my vast horde of opinions, research, and second-hand accounts of what The Old Internet was like and how The Current Internet is becoming, I cannot say for absolute certainty that we will see a total collapse of these tech empires. At the very least, however, I do believe that they will become hollowed shells of their former selves.

I have yet to talk about YouTube and its history, and, to be quite frank with you all, I simply must avoid that topic for now. All I will say is that I implore my fellow content creators, specifically those that create Video On-Demand content for YouTube and TikTok, to look into creating your own websites to host your content in the event that something happens to these empires, too. If you don't have offline copies of your videos, do so when you can.

cryptpad review !

in depth review of cryptpad as someone who is using it as a replacement for google docs because i don't trust google and i dipped the moment i heard "fully integrated ai" 🤭

we're scoring cryptpad on a scale of 1-10 based on its interface, features, accessibility, ease of access, and storage.

scoring criteria:

usability 10/10 : has a lot of formatting options, while also being easy on the eyes. offers features that allow the software to be easily customizable to each user's needs and preferences, or features that make writing easier, without being overwhelming.

accessibility 10/10 : includes accessibility options for eye strain/dyslexia/etc like a proper dark mode and dyslexia friendly fonts, while also having an easy-to-navigate layout, and a mobile app that is equally easy to use without losing its features. doesn't take a long time to load, and is easy to adapt to as a new user.

storage 10/10 : provides a free account with very high or unlimited storage. the documents and files you create don't take up a ton of space, and you have options for upgrading storage if applicable.

what is cryptpad?

similar to how docs operates on desktop, cryptpad is a website-based file drive and software. it's free to create an account, and offers a selection of different kinds of files you can make. here's a list of features i think are notable, first:

there's 10 different of kinds of files you can create, including even code documents! cryptpad also allows you to create as many folders as you like, upload pre-existing files or folders, and even allows you to add links to your drive if you have links you want to save.

cryptpad always will open a new document or a pre-existing one in a new tab! when making a new document it automatically gives you the options to name it, password-lock it, set a destruction date.

there's diversity in your sharing options: you can toggle and change the rules for the kinds of access people get to your shared documents!

somewhat on the same topic, there's access settings and details you can review and tweak at any time.

also you can change your account's display name in your settings LMAO

there's a chat option on documents for when you're working on something with other people in the upper right corner of your screen!

the actual scoring:

usability: 7/10

formatting your documents isn't terribly versatile on cryptpad, but it offers to you that you can make as many folders and nest as many of them as you want, while also making its layout and navigation simple. there isn't a ton of super fancy features in the rich text documents, but i enjoy that, to be honest! keeps it simple.

accessibility: 7.5/10

tragically, you cannot change the background of cryptpad files, and there's no mobile app :( if i could i would. they do, at least, offer a light or dark mode? i have dark mode selected of course, but it um... yeah the background is always just that white 😬 unfortunately. they do have basic font options, but personally, my love for cryptpad's accessibility lies in the fact you can make as many folders and nested folders as you damn well please, and the drive screen is SO easy to navigate.

storage: 10/10

1GB for free, to start with? sir, i have 52 files in this drive (all rich text) and i have used 0.03 of that !! which, if i did my math correctly (debatable), that means i'll need over 5 thousand files to fill up that 1GB. AND it's upgradable, without the upgrade price being my soul? you can even donate just for funsies!

overall rating: 8/10

personally, i love cryptpad! i do wish you could change the document background color, and i wish that i had more formatting option like line spacing, but it's a good iteration of what i want in a writing program! i'd definitely recommend if you like supporting freelance guys doin their own thing while also not struggling to figure out how the fuck a writing software works.

First of all, thanks for the ask! 😃

Now, you're getting something I've been itching to talk about for my BotW longfic but that I've only just barely been able to lay some small clues for in the fic itself. (It's not a spoiler though).

In the beginning of Link's Thought Brambles, Link picks up the slate thinking to take a picture of Zelda with it, and the moment he does the slate begins to record his thoughts (it's the Adventure Log feature but without the software update it gets later in BotW, so basically it's beta and it's a shitty version of the software - totally unfiltered).

In the fic, Zelda can't figure out why it does this for Link, and not her. After all, she'd been using it long before Link, and Purah had before then. Why didn't it ever read their thoughts?! And how had Link turned the feature on?

The whole idea for the fic came from this headcanon of mine: just as the shrines were created in order to empower the hero during the next Calamity, the slate was created in order to allow the hero to access them and to use the Sheikah Towers - in other words, the slate was specifically designed for use by Link. Therefore, its features only fully activate when he is the user.

Stuff in my head that goes along with this:

They based the slate's connection to Link on the Master Sword's connection to the previous Link 10,000 years ago. They didn't fully understand it, but they were able to mimic it enough to make it functional. So just like Fi can listen to Link's thoughts, the slate can. However, there's no spirit inside the slate. It can record information, but it cannot speak back.

I was thinking they based the Divine Beasts' connection with their pilots also on that era's Link and the Master Sword. Just they did that first, before the previous Calamity. The slate and the shrines would have been created later.

The slate's 'hard drive space' and active memory both are limited. Its creators chose to limit its log record to text only. There's space for still pictures when desired by the user, but even that is very limited.

To save space, the slate's original programmers figured out how to not duplicate Link's speech and thoughts - if the two match, it only saves the speech portion.

The original programmers knew the feature wasn't perfect. The idea behind its inclusion on the slate was to help Link keep track of information that might be important to his success, not to keep a full record of everything he thinks about while making toast. But at the time the slate was lost (presumably, at the time the Yiga split from the Sheikah over that era's royal family banning the use of Sheikah tech), that problem with the program hadn't been resolved. Over a long period of time, some of the Sheikah continued to work on the code in secret and uploaded a new version to the pedestal in the Shrine of Resurrection (or maybe the guidance stone at the Great Plateau Tower - that's what I was originally thinking, but maybe the Shrine makes more sense). So then, far in the future, when the hero is prophesized to sleep for 100 years, he would wake to the new version of the software rather than beta.

I kind of like the idea of a secret team of Sheikah having a back entrance to the Shrine of Resurrection where Maz Koshia is so they can sneak in and maintain the tech.

In the BotW memories, Link is never seen holding the slate. So I thought it was valid to base my AU on the simple fact that in this timeline, just once, Link decides to pick it up, and it changes everything.

I was SOOOO EXCITED when I first played Age of Calamity and Impa was running with the slate, but it was all dark... and then she trips... and then IT SUDDENLY COMES TO LIFE WHEN LINK IS ABOUT TO CATCH IT!!!!!!!!!! I was like HOLY SHIT IT FITS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And then the tower rises out of the ground in response! Again HOLY SHIT!!!!!!!!! I loved how well it fit this idea! Later, I read that the AoC people intended it to be proximity to Terrako, not to Link, that lit the slate up, but.... eh. I'm just going to ignore that. I'm happy that the synergy is there in-game, and I'll just ignore the interview for the purposes of my story.

So, anyway: Link didn't turn the mind-reading feature on. It self-activated because Link touched it. Simple as that!

That remote-connection-required GitHub program for my school work had me tweaking so hard i. Impulse bought a laptop yesterday. I have been trying to get one for a few years for school bc my tower is so old and struggles and it’d be nice to be able to take my computer anywhere else so I’m not at home 24/7 bc that’s been killing me for years so like. Had to dig into my savings but it’s still a cheap laptop I just needed it to have decent functionality and after being completely unable to get into it without connecting my Microsoft account I then spent hours uninstalling useless programs and turning off all the dumb sponsors and notifications and random ui features that look atrocious bc I forgot windows 11 existed I was still on 10.

This shit fucking sucks so bad every ten seconds Microsoft is begging u to give them every ounce of your information like it’s not even funny. It’s v easy to click into connecting everything u own to ur computer and like i really don’t care if it’s useful go ahead, but like I’m not tryna do all that. Like can I not just. Use the computer?? Maybe without the system constantly saying how much worse my experience is without one. Like no offense I doubt there’s regulations bc no one would think to fucking do it but it should not be legal to require users to sign up to a service to access their own fucking computer they bought. It literally says if u want to use a local account u can, but after u sign in. So now even tho I’ve tried to delete every trace of my email and removed the original account microsoft edge prompts me with it for sign-in when I open it and no option to delete. So they still have my info even tho I didn’t want to give it to them

And ofc they’re a tech company they need data from users to function but if u don’t glance in the settings there’s a lot of extra ones, to the point that I had to take a break from reading them. The part that frustrates me the most is that there are now so many random buttons and links on the sidebar every single program in order to redirect to some other microsoft-related features that I can barely tell what I’m navigating sometimes. Might be the only one who feels this way but spending a few hundreds dollars on a brand new computer and then logging in to see the desktop covered with every single possible program (or phone app) u might ever want or need transmuted into this bare, technically functional microsoft void that’s still somehow missing most basic features any active user would need and also can’t be uninstalled w/o settings windows 10 and 11 intentionally removed makes me want to crumble into a ball and die maybe. Here's my older post explaining the AU too! Though sorry in advance, lmao, this post too will get long <3 I love to ramble, lol

But yeah, basically it's a small AU, originally it was kind of a "sequel"/continuation to my modern J&H-story; but then it became its own thing.

Basically yes, J&H story happens and all that, and Jekyll/Hyde then dies. But instead of like the actual "proper" afterlife: his soul is somehow by some mysterious occurrence transferred inside an old 90's/early 2000's CRT computer-monitor, and he can thus control whatever computer or computer accessories are attached to that monitor.

That monitor is his new "body" basically, yet he can't move or touch anything. He does have senses, but only when correct accessories are attached to the computer and thus he can access those accessories. And with accessories, I mean stuff like a microphone, speakers/headphones, webcam etc. Microphone being his ears (hearing), speakers/headphones allowing the user hear what he has to say (speech), and webcam being his eyes (sight), and so on. If there's no microphone or speakers/headphones attached however, he then loses both the ability to hear or speak audibly... but he can still communicate by basically generating his messages on the monitor's screen and the user gets to reply to those with text. He loves floppy disks and CD's etc, those are like little snacks to him (and yes, he can access the files on them, though he can't delete or edit them). Degaussing the CRT monitor also feels like tickling to him and he enjoys it. PS/2 or USB devices can be attached to him and depending on whatever the device is, he can control them.

His speaking voice is basically his regular old voice with an accent and all, but more mechanical as you can probably imagine. Kind of either like those old text-to-speech things from the 80's/90's, or kinda robotic.

However, if you think that he's all fully 100% kind and nice, then lmao, you'd be wrong. He's actually very cranky and most of the time just being annoying, or complaining a bunch. Or judging whatever the user's doing on the computer. He's sarcastic, snarky, smug and arrogant. Though if he really takes a liking to the user or befriends them, that's when he gets kinda softer and can actually be a kind helpful guy. Still able to use his knowledge and all, since his memories are still intact and I mean, he's a doctor despite being stuck inside a computer, lmao. The only thing he can't remember well however, is his own old "human" appearance. He's slowly forgetting his own face and it devastates him quite a lot </3 Anyways, if you're wondering: yes, he can also access the internet however he likes. You can just imagine all the pranks he could pull on the user, if he really dislikes them or just feels like being a jerk, lmao. Even if the computer is left on a sleep mode or in the login screen, he can still use the computer however he likes and then browse the internet even while the user is away. Don't worry though, if he really likes the user, he won't hack their stuff or such. He just minds his own business most of the time anyways. And he doesn't bother the user all of the time too, he does need his naps /j

And Hyde? Well, he's around too, though he appears rather randomly and rarely. Usually whenever Jekyll is feeling really stressed or enraged by anything. And Hyde then is a really nasty terrifying self-destructive glitch/malware/virus, that tends to cause havoc, scream in a distorted glitchy mechanical LOUD voice, and try to break Jekyll/itself. Basically he tries to corrupt nearly everything, because he himself is a corruption. He usually does disappear after some time and Jekyll then has to try fix the possible software-related (= corruptions/glitches in apps, programs etc.) damages etc, usually succeeding in it. Though if there's any hardware-failures, like fried or broken components in the computer; the user must fix those.

Jekyll is kind of "immortal" however, as if the computer is turned off or suffers a sudden power outage; it doesn't affect Jekyll really, since his soul is permanently stuck inside the CRT monitor itself, and not the computer exactly even if he can control it. If the power's off the computer, he's still there but just can't do much, y'know. If one were to destroy the monitor itself however..... well. That's a different story, lol, Jekyll would then have a very bad time.

As I read the post linked below, it reinforced for me just how much media has changed in the past ten to twenty years. The post itself is a great snapshot of what’s required to understand a news story, and it demonstrates why most news media today is simply not working.

I don’t watch tv news, and haven’t for probably a decade. We have a subscription to the New York Times, but the login rarely works for me, and we’ve let our Washington Post subscription lapse. I get my news from a variety of online newspapers, npr, websites, blogs, and podcasts, and usually do an internet search for anything that sounds interesting or that I want to understand better.

This is a pretty terrible way to keep up with things. It takes a lot of time, and it requires a general knowledge of the ideological slant of the news outlet I’m reading. That means I either have to remember or look up who owns the company and who runs their editorial board, which takes up even more time.

I could save a lot of time by going to one source that not only spells out what just happened, but also tells who loses and who gains, what the impacts will be and how to process it, and perhaps even include links to speech transcripts and legislation for us to read on our own. Good newspapers used to do more of that, but they don’t anymore; instead they simply share the latest quotes about the subject at hand. (“He said this thing, she said a different thing, so you decide for yourself who’s telling the truth. What is truth, anyway?”) So now we need to piece full stories together from multiple sources, just like tumblr user @yiffmaster does above.

It takes a genuine interest in what you’re reading to spend the necessary time that on that. Otherwise all you’ll see are stories about how there’s a new hire at NLRB from SEIU and that upset somebody, or something about the Joy Silk doctrine that makes no sense on its own, or (most likely) that Biden spoke to a worker or two on a picket line somewhere but so did Donald Trump so both parties claim to support workers. It’s all meaningless individual trees standing on their own until you can step back, study, and see the forest.

That’s not to say we never get important dot-connecting well-researched articles. We absolutely do, and there are still plenty of amazing hardworking journalists, but the landscape is so fragmented that it’s hard to know where those articles will come from, whether they can be trusted, or often even how to find or access them. Often they don’t even have dates, so it’s hard to know just how outdated the information even is.

I would love to find a news source that organized its articles by topic and provided outside links. Every story could provide links to relevant info and source material, instead of offhand references. But such a broad news site doesn’t really exist among the sources I read. (TPM might get closest at times, but it’s a tiny company.) instead, an article gets published, it’s out of date a week later, and it remains the top search result for its subject matter for weeks, months or years. Try looking up what the Biden administration did to help rail workers after they went back to work at the start of December 2022, to see what I mean. It’s possible, but you have to already know what you’re looking for. Otherwise all you can find is that they let workers down by forcing them back to work, which isn’t remotely the whole story—what came after that was a very big deal.

But there’s a workaround to all of this that a lot of Americans use to feel they have the full picture. It’s a cable network that does connect all the dots. It ties stories back into an overarching narrative, and explains to viewers how each news story reinforces its narrative. Its viewers tune in for that narrative; they know who is blocking the programs they’re told are good or bad, and who supports the other ones. It’s called FOX News of course, and it’s complete garbage propaganda. It’s also genius in how it works.

There is no good way to deprogram a FOX viewer who’s sucked in, because there is simply no alternative that fully describes the stories that they follow. They’re in an alternative universe of facts that have bits of the real world thrown in for color. The stories that multiple reliable sources do provide cannot counter that narrative on their own, because they simply don’t explain enough. If anything they have the opposite effect, because the FOX viewer is arriving with a set narrative in their mind, and the small story that simply presents arguments with no conclusions will include the argument they’re familiar with. For them to come out of that well of ignorance will require research into multiple sources that they’re simply not going to ever do.

A liberal propaganda outlet to counter it is more than useless—most people who lean left find those annoying and and no one on the right would believe a word of it.

No, what we need is news for today to be organized completely differently, almost like a current events Wikipedia. Publishing a newspaper or making a newscast and sticking them online is borderline ridiculous. They’re only snapshots in time, and without a tree of links to accompany them—perhaps via a link back to a topic main page where that tree of links resides—they often become misinformation fairly quickly.

Many news outlets have taken some baby steps toward something like this, but only with major stories (“Follow our impeachment coverage here!”), and only with their own articles. This relegates other important news (like what the Biden Admin is doing with labor) to a lesser status and keeps these outlets as news gatekeepers, and it undermines their own credibility among doubters by presenting yet another closed system.

We need news sources that are much more comprehensive and committed to providing a full picture if we ever hope to undo the damage and division that propaganda is creating here. I’d love to know if any of you have found such a thing. I haven’t.

I want to find sociological research on this...), we become more and more reliant on technological aids to foster continued engagement and relationship building / maintenance with our "supposed" loved ones. Because we are also met with a total inundation of texts and DMs, not to mention the other random funny shit our FYPs curate for us. Yes, there is more access now. I keep hearing more and more lately about how the notion of love languages is pseudo-science / pop psychology. it seems that debunking the scientific basis (or lack thereof) behind it has become quite in-vogue now despite that we still LOVE to use the terms and notions generated by this concept as a shorthand for communicating with partners--for better or worse.

in particular, the stipulation that "my love language is gift giving therefore not getting me a bday present hurt my feelings and felt like a violation of what is supposed to be intimate knowledge from an intimate partner" is a really really long and convoluted way of simply saying it's hurtful to now get someone, esp an intimate romantic partner, a bday present. like, why add in the justification of "love languages"? Is the act of neglecting to honor a person's bday not in itself a harmful act? It feels like we're creating extra hoops to jump through to justify or de-legitimize another party. "my (30M) love language acts of service, so when my gf (21F) failed to do the dishes that felt like a violation of my foundational notion for affection, care, and romance."

Although one could easily be overwhelmed by the seemingly never-ending to-do list, Sterling finds a great deal of joy in wearing so many different hats. One of her most essential tasks involves clear communication with users when the delicate instruments in the facility are unusable because of routine maintenance and repairs.

“Better planning allows for better science,” Sterling says. “Luckily, I’m very comfortable with building and fixing things. Let’s troubleshoot. Let’s take it apart. Let’s put it back together.”

Out of all her duties as a core facility director, she most looks forward to the opportunities to teach, especially helping students develop research projects.

A non-linear scientific journey

When Sterling enrolled in Russell Sage College, a women’s college in New York, she was planning to pursue a career as a physical therapist. “I wouldn’t recommend doing that,” she says with a laugh. “To celebrate after finishing that intense experience, I took a year off to figure out what came next.”

Sterling chose to do a postdoc in the lab of Eva Nogales, a structural biology professor at the University of California at Berkeley. Nogales was looking for a scientist with experience working with lipids, a class of molecules that Sterling had studied extensively in graduate school.

At the time Sterling joined, the Nogales Lab was at the forefront of implementing an exciting structural biology approach: cryo-EM.

“When I was interviewing, I’d never even seen the type of microscope required for cryo-EM, let alone performed any experiments,” Sterling says. “But I remember thinking ‘I’m sure I can figure this out.’”

Cryo-EM is a technique that allows researchers to determine the three-dimensional shape, or structure, of the macromolecules that make up cells. A researcher can take a sample of their macromolecule of choice, suspend it in a liquid solution, and rapidly freeze it onto a grid to capture the macromolecules in random positions — the “cryo” part of the name. Powerful electron microscopes then collect images of the macromolecule — the EM part of cryo-EM. 

The two-dimensional images of the macromolecules from different angles can be combined to produce a three-dimensional structure. Structural information like this can reveal the macromolecule’s function inside cells or inform how it differs in a disease state. The rapidly expanding use of cryo-EM has unlocked so many mechanistic insights that the researchers who developed the technology were awarded the 2017 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. 

The MIT.nano facility opened its doors in 2018. The open-access, state-of-the-art facility now has more than 160 tools and more than 1,500 users representing nearly every department at MIT. The Cryo-EM facility lives in the basement of the MIT.nano building and houses multiple electron microscopes and laboratory space for cryo-specimen preparation.

Thanks to her work at UC Berkeley, Sterling’s career trajectory has long been intertwined with the expanding use of cryo-EM in research. Sterling anticipated the need for experienced scientists to run core facilities in order to maintain the electron microscopes needed for cryo-EM, which range in cost from a staggering $1 million to $10 million each.

After completing her postdoc, Sterling worked at the Harvard University cryo-EM core facility for five years. When the director position for the MIT.nano Cryo-EM facility opened, she decided to apply.

“I like that the core facility at MIT was smaller and more frequently used by students,” Sterling says. “There’s a lot more teaching, which is a challenge sometimes, but it’s rewarding to impact someone’s career at such an early stage.”

“Sterling cultivates an environment where I can freely ask questions about anything to support my learning,” says Bonnie Su, a frequent Cryo-EM facility user and graduate student from the Vos lab.

But Sterling does not want to stop there. Looking ahead, she hopes to expand the facility by acquiring an additional electron microscope to allow more users to utilize this powerful technology in their research. She also plans to build a more collaborative community of cryo-EM scientists at MIT with additional symposia and casual interactions such as coffee hours.

Under her management, cryo-EM research has flourished. In the last year, the Cryo-EM core facility has supported research resulting in 12 new publications across five different departments at MIT. The facility has also provided access to 16 industry and non-MIT academic entities. These studies have revealed important insights into various biological processes, from visualizing how large protein machinery reads our DNA to the protein aggregates found in neurodegenerative disorders.
