dear brother watchthrough is progressing rather slowly but every episode does kinda poison my brain a little more. anyway just watched ep 9 and i HAD to change my pfp to kaoru no kimi (<- do. do we ever find out her real name?? we have to right) i love her so much. i love her butch failgirl malewife airplane mechanic hall monitor rizz and her sportballisms and every time her heart starts acting up again and she starts clutching her chest and stuff im like damn.. she's just like me fr (<- NOT the same but i do have like. minor complications from the chest pit) that's an experience i have every day (<- it is not every day)

Follow-up lore to the rat Soul drawing, since I couldn't stop myself from rambling about it earlier.

College AU. By day, Soul's just a mysterious cool guy who loves to bake (and has been struggling as of late with the now widespread fact that he's still single coming out), but by night, he turns into a rat and has been trying to keep this a secret for as long as he can remember.

His best friend is Star (or "The [Great] Black☆Star" as he likes to call himself), who is the only one who knows because (a.) he's his roommate, and (b.) no one would ever believe him if he gave Soul away. This also comes with the drawback of Star being his only getaway plan if Soul ends up staying out too late, and has led to way too many times of people fawning over Star's "adorable pet rat" that he just "randomly walks around with" sometimes.

The other students are of course Kidd, who may be in some kind of gothic death cult, Tsubaki, who has a plant collecting problem, and Liz and Patty, who we're not sure what they're doing but they might be tied to all the campus rumours about ghosts (much to Liz's disdain). Maka used to live in the city but was living elsewhere for years, and then came back to attend her hometown college. She seems to be the only normal one here, however that in of itself is an abnormality.

Since this is mainly about Soul and Star, I'll give some other little tidbits about 'em:

Their dorm is set up for Soul to get around comfortably at night, but he also still has a cage so the pet rat facade has some credibility. He does in fact actually sleep in there from time to time but the door is usually left open.

Soul claims he's in a band (kinda) but no one has ever seen said band, or who any of the other members are. Trying to ask Soul about it is about as good as asking Star about Soul.

Soul does actually have a tattoo on his arm (and has always wanted to get gauges but is worried that they won't go over well with his rat form). It's a partial sleeve of a partly filled music staff, and may be related to his composition passion project that he tends to hole up with sometimes.

Soul and Star worked out an allotted "get wasted" time where Star can freely have some nights to go out and party while not having to worry about babysitting Soul.

People (Maka) wonder if Soul and Star have a thing aside from them always seeming to be in cahoots with each other because while Soul claims to not be interested in dating (especially with the "fan" problem), he ends up kind of staring at other guys, and Star always seems to be hanging around behind him whenever Soul gets the goods in/out of the oven ("Star, if you bring up my ass one more time you're going in next, Hansel and Gretel style.")

Optional scene much later where Soul ends up attending one of Maka's sportball games and realizes she's perfect. This is the one time Star just had to be observant.

Okay, is this partially because Zeth is super adorable, and Epel is super adorable? Maybe. I'm imagining a soft romance between her and Epel. She's his favorite cheerleader whenever he does the sportball. They have a soft relationship, picnics, apple picking, sledding, sharing a cozy night by the fire. A cozy, simple, soft relationship. I can't get past Taurus Epel 😭 meemaw ends up knitting her a beanie, and expects her to come home with Epel for every break and holiday. The guest room is always open to Zeth. And she'll look the other way if you get chilly in the harveston winter and you sneak your way into Epel's arms. Btw, Epel likes to experiment with his hot cocoa recipes. Hopefully Zeth has some ideas of her own, he'll try whatever she suggests.

misc: got to see COWS this weekend!!! i spent a stupid amount of money on a haircut on saturday down in the closest city (so an hour away) because i was desperate for someone who knew how to cut curly hair and unfortunately i was not disappointed so i will probably continue to pay stupid money for haircuts. roommate came and did work in sbux while i was haircut, we got daves hot chicken for lunch (very tasty), walked around, went to TJs for groceries, and then hit this organic dairy farm because they wanted to get choccy milk for their partner! unfortunately they didnt have the chocolate milk but we did get cottage cheese, soft cheese, uhh Misc dairy basically. yum. and we got to SEE THE COWS. they're so shape.

got to dogsit my neighbor's anxiety-beset beast this weekend too. baby.

finally i hung out with friends for the superb owl! i do not care abt the sportball but it was nice to vibe. also the halftime show made me crack up ngl

i think isabel REALLY likes wizard broom ball sport. i think in a world where her entire present has already been decided by her future and the education she’s getting that shes good at and loves is guaranteed to be tossed aside the moment she graduates, wizard broom sportball is the only non-magic area she has that she is able to actively choose. its her choice. its a breath of fresh air away from all of it where she can just focus on the moment and the adrenaline and the speed. and whacking shit with a bat.

What is the general public view of the heroes and villains?

So heros can be split up into two groups- official licensed heros and vigilantes. Licensed heros work through a couple various organizations throughout the world (but mainly one, it's really taking the world by storm!) And are generally pretty well liked! They have huge public relations departments and sponsor deals and whatnot to make sure the public likes them and feels they need heros to stay safe. I'm very much taking inspiration from mha's whole heros are if the police were celebrities thing here, the most popular heros are generally either older heros with senority and brand recognition, or newer upstarts with their hero company backing their debute. Large showy fights are ideal, but heros are generally meant to minimize property damage and injuries. But- well, it's not always avoidable is it? So it's quickly brushed under the rug with a new gossip story or someone popular coming out of retirement. A bit of damage is well worth all the good they do, right?

Vigilantes, on the other hand, are generally portrayed as a public enemy. Perhaps not quick on the same scale as villains, they are generally doing good of course, but the media still points out how dangerous an unregistered vigilante without proper hero training can be. They tend to take public blame for official missions going wrong or having lots of damage- it would have worked out if it weren't for those no good wannabes getting in the real heros way! Conversely, vigilantes are much more popular in, well, groups who have reason to not trust the police. Marginalized groups recognize that some guy doing this for no recognition are much more likely to actually have the people's best interest at heart than someone working for a global corporate police force. That isn't to say all vigilantes are angels, but there tends to be more solidarity between marginalized communities and their local vigilantes.

Villains... are interesting! They're dangerous criminals for sure, and the media certainly portrays them as such. But there's definitely a sort of... tendency to treat them as something of a wrestling heel (I think that's the term for the bad guy?)? You're definitely not supposed to like them, but people do tend to love hating the flashier, funner villains :) which is to say nothing of the romanticization of villains that happens lol. Think those dark mafia romance stories but with super villains. The fandom culture around heros and villains is very fun, from people keeping stats like it's sportball to full on tumblr fandom where people make fake accounts pretending to be popular heros and villains and discourse about the ethics of shipping heros (does it count as rpf if it's their hero persona?? It's not like theyre shipping the actual people behind the masks!)
