well obviously my sister but I’m guessing you’re the same anon so 1) you already know her fics 2) you want different recs from what’s on her list (some of them being fics I rec’d to her lol). recs will skew heavily seri/rei and I’m just going through my bookmarks so it’s gonna be most recently read to oldest read. also seconding sister’s recs of bobmoss and crookedturtle. but I’ll add a fic from each anyway because I already wrote something for one while I was drafting this (oops)

Reigen and Tome are kidnapped from the Spirits and Such office to be used as leverage against Mob. They have two goals: to contact the outside world, and keep each other safe. In doing so they engage in a dangerous game of lies and manipulation with their captors—a game with potentially deadly consequences.

gen (bg seri/rei), complete, 36k. Good for whump and high stakes interpersonal maneuvering & drama. I liked how the story extends beyond rescue and goes into how everyone navigates the fallout

It doesn’t really matter, he reminds himself. He’s making a change, just like all of Reigen’s clients. What’s on his hands isn’t set in stone. He just has to make sure Reigen doesn’t see it— even if it might feel nice to have that steady attention, Reigen’s hands that are so much nicer than Serizawa’s folding around his.

(or: Reigen starts offering palm readings as a service, leading to Serizawa having to confront his feelings for his boss.)

Mob doesn’t hesitate. “We had maths homework to hand in,” he says. “But now we don’t have to. We don’t even have to go to the lesson.”

(The sun is shining, the birds are singing, Salt Middle School has been closed by an unexplained miracle, and the only thing wrong in Spice City is the fact that nothing is even slightly wrong at all.)

teru/mob, incomplete, 55k. for the most part I haven’t been repeating authors on this list, but listen. listen to me. I need you to listen. it is extremely unlikely for this fic to ever be completed. but hark, lest this sad probability turn you away and leave you dispassionately scrolling to the next fic, I need you (you specifically) to know that if I were in the same room as you, I would be wrestling the phone/mouse/trackpad/touchscreen/etc from your hands and furiously clicking the link. when I bookmarked this fic in 2017 I described it as having “some breathtakingly sensical prose and the funniest misunderstandings I’ve ever read”. trust me from seven years ago. open your heart.

I’m guessing this was written after studio bones gave us reigen cutting serizawa’s hair. crumbs no more; for once we had a feast to enjoy. short & sweet getting together fic

Some habits are tells.

seri/rei, oneshot, 1k. snapshots of pre-relationship and established relationship scenes, I’m quite fond of it. on my first reading I’m pretty sure I remember not paying attention to the habit piece at all (even with it being right in the summary) so at the last scene I was hit by the double whammy of ‘oh so that was what serizawa was reacting to’ and ‘AW… THAT’S SWEET…’; I think the fic does a great job of hiding/not acknowledging certain things the perspective character knows and is reacting to, which makes it fun to reread and pinpoint what exactly serizawa’s previously more opaque train of thought was. like, it’s the same stuff, but you get to read into more nuance.

You suppose one of the weirdest times to realize you've fallen deeply and irrevocably in love is when it's fuck o'clock in the morning and you're blearily checking your fridge for leftover curry.

It’s like Reigen’s been waiting for the question. He stops dead on the pavement, grips Mob by the shoulders, and stares down into his eyes with an expression as haunted as though every ghost the pair of them has ever exorcised has taken up residence behind it. “Mob,” he says. “Mob,” he says again. “Tell me, Mob. Look at me and tell me. Tell me truthfully. Do I look cursed to you?”

Mob looks at him, and tells him truthfully. “No.”

“Well, you didn’t look very long,” says Reigen. “Let’s just stand here for a moment, like so, and you can have another look, a nice long look, and really think about it...”

(There's nothing strange about being called back to exorcise the same haunted photocopier six days in a row. It must just be a very haunted photocopier.)

seri/rei, complete, 17k. a fic sister wrote for ✨ME✨ that shows off reigen’s neuroticism and his decidedly not-normal attempts to come across as Extremely Normal, The Most Normal Man Alive. there are so many comedic setups and payoffs. there are so many shenanigans. reigen gets frog-boiled into romance. actually, I drop that term a lot but I’m not sure it’s a common enough to intuitively understand. it refers to the boiling frog metaphor

seri/rei, complete, 18k. sister was insane for this because she trapped all of her readers AND herself in time prison by releasing one chapter a day. it was really funny to witness because I was the only person not in time prison by virtue of editing privilege. while we were watching mondays: see you next week (an office time loop movie), sister was saying she was impressed at how effective/efficient the movie was at picking which scenes to repeat. this is to say, as someone who notices these details, sister was very intentional about when things changed and how things changed from the perspective of a character completely unaware of time prison. also, the emotional momentum is extremely good, I loved reading serizawa’s increasing desperation from reigen’s context-less perspective.

After what was supposed to be a routine exorcism, Reigen wakes up in the wrong body.

serirei, complete, 26k. slowburn bodyswap with mystery and intrigue. a solid casefic! I can be biased and right. there are metanarrative elements that I find fun and that, in my opinion, highlights how sister did in fact get a degree in philosophy. there’s also some fun subtle and messy characterization notes, like when serizawa asks reigen not to cook for him. it’s hard to talk about what I like about this fic without giving away a lot of specifics, so go read it.

I've been getting super into crime fiction recently (books and movies), and I'm making a watchlist of movies I want to check out next. heist movies, gangster films, thrillers, anything involving criminals is interesting to me, and I'd really love to hear about your faves! have a nice day <3

hiii, Estelle! oh I love a good crime movie! I grew up on gangster and mob movies tbh so there's some obvious choices like the godfather and goodfellas. continuing with Scorsese, I love casino. I think it's somewhat underrated Scorsese, idk i just don't see it mentioned that often, but it's super fun. the departed as well, people talked shit about it, but it's great. then mean streets, serpico, taxi driver, dog day afternoon, heat, collateral, thief, chinatown. pretty much every Tarantino ever, obviously reservoir dogs and pulp fiction, jackie brown is my favourite and the sort of song of the movie is across 110th street from the movie of the same name, so I'd def recommend that one, it's an underrated flick. heist movie-wise, ocean's eleven kind of the king here. then set it off, bound, inside man, widows, the italian job (the original), topkapi and rififi are underrated ones, the asphalt jungle, the friends of eddie coyle, the taking of pelham 123, the thomas crown affair (the remake), dead presidents, out of sight, point break, the driver, hustlers, a fish called wanda is sooo funny. sexy beast is such a great and intense movie.

if you'd enjoy something criminal and psychosexual, I'd recommend two 60s movies the housemaid and who killed teddy bear? the cook, the thief, the wife and her lover is an insane sexy one. blue velvet fits here as well. Guy Ritchie made the same movie like 4 times tbh, but I love snatch and lock, stock and two smoking barrels, I think the man from uncle is also a fun one. Brian De Palma is good at corny and sleazy and I kinda love his scarface. body double is silly but I love a good voyeuristic movie. along those lines you obviously have rear window and peeping tom, and then to continue with Hitchcock, I love rope, psycho, and think dial m for murder is quite overlooked. natural born killers, true romance and the doom generation for something stupid and bloody. mandatory Fincher recs like se7en and zodiac. I love the usual suspects, it has that twist at the end that for me personally works even upon rewatches. another underrated movie is joy house with beautiful Jane Fonda and Alain Delon in his prime. faster pussycat kill kill is just pure fun and sleaze and gorgeous ladies. I love lady snowblood and scorpion with Meiko Kaji but I know you've seen those. tokyo drifter is a stylish one as well. some obvi french new wave recs like breathless and pierrot le fou. I'd say there's nothing quite like the atmospheric the night of the hunter. I love drive too, it's all style and the only substance is blood. uncut gems and good time are quite good too. out of something extra new, I enjoyed love lies bleeding more than I expected. seven psychopaths and in bruges for something cynical and silly. then fargo, no country for old men, the big lebowski. filth and trainspotting for something utterly dirty and disgusting. not to forget Hannibal Lecter, we can't not mention the silence of the lambs and manhunter. also badlands, dirty harry, carlito's way, eastern promises, the third man, the big sleep, double indemnity, gun crazy, bonnie and clyde, foxy brown, american psycho, the talented mr ripley, prisoners. something more along crime drama strange days, fallen angels, the city of the rising sun and made in hong kong.

1. Issho - Reigen and Teru dynamics, hurt/comfort, god they're so sweet, it does contain violence and triggering themes (has warnings dw), BUT IT'S THE BEST OK

2. What we Make - Reigen and Tome dynamic, hurt/comfort, also has violence and appropriate warnings, i really like this one

3. The Joy of Cooking (for a Family You Didn't Know You Had) - Reigen and all his esper kids, THIS IS SO WARM AND SWEET, WHY HAVE I NOT SEEN A RECOMMENDATION BEFORE

4. The sun in the summertime - more Reigen and his esper kids, also sweet and warm

5. Domestic - this one's from the Attic au (if you've read abot you might be familiar), hurt/comfort, it's definitely sweet and incredible honestly, but also it does have a lot of triggers, proceed carefully. Personally I love this series so very much

6. Curses and Such - this is found family (in a way ig?), SnS trio and shenanigans, They're at the point where Tome, Serizawa and Ekubo are just used to Reigen's nonsense

I actually don’t read many other fanfics or follow many authors so I don’t know how much I can help. Honestly after finishing mob psycho, I just asked my sister if she had recs and read those. There were a couple I saw in passing on tumblr and read too, but very few. The ones from my sister I feel like most people would have read but I suppose I will list them anyways.

Out of Body by bobmoss. Serirei, it’s about Serizawa starting to get regular panic attacks, which causes his soul to leave his body. There’s a possession scene in here that I enjoy because I think possession is fun.

tomorrow isn’t always another day by suitablyskippy. A time loop one shot fic very much more lighthearted than my death loop fare, I enjoyed it a lot. I feel like reading this affected the way I write some of Reigen’s dialogue.

Surface Tension by crookedturtle and fend. Horror serirei. I love the horror a lot, also the ironic curses. I think the logistics of the curses and everything was just so good, it’s one of those things where I wish I could have written the horrible office building and stuff.

What We Make by crookedturtle. Reigen and Tome get kidnapped. It’s a very dire situation and reigen gets fucking wrecked. This fic has so much Reigen cleverness and logistics that I enjoy. I read this fic before I ever wrote anything with Tome and I can definitely tell you that it influenced how I wrote Tome.

Dead Weight by crownorclover. Post-reigen manga fic, reigen visiting Serizawa in the hospital right after dealing with Rusty. A lot of fun banter, a lot of serious talk. There were quite a few lines in the narration that I was like “oh that’s so charming, I wish I wrote that”

Fly in the Tomb by ChubbyHornedEquine. Pre-claw Serizawa oneshot. This one is fun because I sent a song to my pal and just said “Serizawa” and ae proceeded to obsess over it and wrote out this oneshot. It puts a lot into very few words, very economical. I think it gives a good claustrophobic atmosphere, and I also love a good beginning and ending parallelism and subtle changes in word meaning. (The song is Fly in My Room by Kerrin Connolly.)

That’s all that comes to mind. (Besides my own fic of course :3c)

"Blue" from Cowboy Bebop is one of my all-time favorites. Honestly the whole Cowboy Bebop soundtrack is amazing and lives up to the hype for sure with its jazz/Old West style with spacy and harder and more modern vibes.

"Ashita Kuru Hi" from Kobato. was the next one that popped into my head! This song gets several different versions throughout the anime, because it's a tune the main character sings all the time, different verses for different events. It even gets a Christmassy reprise in one episode! This is the full, basic version of it featuring music box. But this piano-opening version with more sweeping instruments plays over the finale credits... While I'm at it, I WILL plug the entire soundtrack. It is ADORABLE and is nice sweet background music for work and study.

Gotta give a shoutout to Mob Psycho 100's opening themes for sure. They're all so good and seat-dance provoking. "1" is my favorite of them, it's so intense!

"Yuzurenai Negai" from Magic Knight Rayearth is really nostalgic for me, being the theme from one of the first anime I ever bought bootleg fansubs of from a shady man at a monthly comics expo. XD It's definitely a "classic anime" kind of song, with that adventurous shoujo feel.

"Matsuri Uta" from Blue Seed is one I was introduced to without having ever seen the anime it's from and I still like it. It has a slow, quiet start and is just a very pretty piece. (I like to sing along to it, hehe.) Here's another arrangement without the lyrics but with more instruments.

WHILE I'M ON Megumi Hayashibara...I'll also rec "Give a Reason" from Slayers. It's so punchy and upbeat and really inspires a person to get up and GO! You know what? Here's "Get Along" too.

I could recommend any of "Cardcaptor Sakura"'s opening and closing themes, but "Hitorijime" sticks out to me as a funky little track that's just extra fun to listen to. In the same vein is "Groovy!" and the video features a hypnotically bouncing Kero-chan so you can't lose.

I could fill an entire post of its own with Sailor Moon music but instead I will gesture wildly at "Moon Revenge" from the R Movie and yell that it features one of my favorite things in any anime song--vocals by the cast.

SPEAKING OF...here's another one of my ultimate favorite anime songs of all time, "Yamerarenai Yamerarenai" from Tenchi Muyô! The entire main voice cast going absolutely ham in character singing about all the little pleasures in life. Absolutely delightful!

also…another weird question but have you ever watched the good place? because that is absolutely Not dark and dreary, but it Is pleasant and funny and existential. genuinely one of the best shows I’ve ever watched (acting, writing, one of the most satisfying conclusions in the history of tv imo). sorry, I’m legally required to bring it up because it and mob psycho are like this 🤞as my all time favorite pieces of media and I think people who like mob will generally like the good place. komorebi by Calamitatum - My Hero Academia || In Progress (Active) I don't keep up with actual My Hero Academia anymore, but some of the fanfics are still really good. This one is Shinsou going undercover as a villain in order to try and prove himself as a hero, but the effects of this are more serious than he had bargained for.

Bloom in Winter by e_va - My Hero Academia || Hiatus (Unlikely to finish) One of my favorite fanfics ever, this one was a huge inspiration to me. Izuku gets kidnapped when he was eight years old and was raised to be the ideal villain by his new boss, a criminal mastermind named Vicious. When he gets a new assignment to enroll in the hero school of his dreams to steal information to help kill the top hero, he struggles not to crack under the weight of his own heroic tendencies.

A Breach of Trust by Phantomrose96 - Mob Psycho 100 || In progress (Active) This is just a really great fanfic ngl, although it slightly strays from the exact premise you are looking for. Mob gets taken when he's young (maybe there's a pattern here) to be kept as spiritual energy food for Mogami. When Reigen Aratake, private investigator and failed psychic, stumbles onto a scared kid that doesn't know how old he is and is convinced he'll hurt whoever gets close to him with a magic barrier, Reigen tries to help the kid heal so he can one day go home. It's never as easy as that, however...

Live Free by SplickedyHat - Motorcity || Completed with a sequel This is probably the closest in vibe to my own writing, although I discovered it well after I had started lfls. A really fun ride, and the sequel feels more like a second season to Motorcity that ties everything off in a way that I really loved.

The Real World (Mob Psycho 100, post-Mogami arc) is absolutely my favorite fic I've ever written. It's some of my best prose, I'm really pleased with how concise and focused I was able to keep it despite touching on so many characters, and it let me distill down a lot of my thoughts on the themes of the show and why it's so important to me. And I wrote it during the absolute worst stretch of the curse, painstaking sentence by painstaking sentence over the course of half a year. I am so so so proud of it.

Fisherman's Knot (Gravity Falls, post-canon fic focusing on the Stans, their deeply-entrenched mental health issues, and their eventual recovery. Also there are selkies.) At 104k words, the longest piece of writing I've ever finished. Writing it was a journey; I took a long break but I'm so happy and proud that I managed to come back and finish it and that there were still people who were as excited as I was to get to the end. The response to this fic blew me away; it started out largely as a coping mechanism to deal with my own poorly-treated mental illness and I feel really honored that my writing resonated with so many people dealing with similar things. I grew so much as a writer over the course of it. Both the big moments of catharsis--Stan's glitter and Ford's realization by the harbor--were things that were so powerful and electric in my head that I worried I wouldn't be able to put them down in words that did the feelings justice, but I did!

Bloom (Discworld, a Glorious 25th of May fic set a few years after Night Watch) Everyone who sets out to write a Discworld fic is undertaking an extreme act of hubris, because not only are you trying to emulate a specific writing style, you're trying to write like Terry Pratchett, which as we all know is basically impossible. Still, I think I hit some good resonant Discworldy notes in this little piece and really nailed the Themes I was going for. Periodically the Tumblr post version gets a little burst of notes and it always makes me really happy that people are enjoying it.

First And Final Orders (Mob Psycho 100, Dimple character study) Hi. Have you heard of ring composition? I love ring composition. It is my single favorite literary device (and I love a LOT of literary devices), so I had to include one of my fics that makes heavy use of it. I also love pointing at a piece of media and going "Hey. Hey have you thought about how there's kind of some Discworld themes here? What if we thought about the Discworld themes together?" And ALSO i love DIMPLE!!! I hope this fic helps explain why.

Casualties (Gravity Falls, missing scene from the finale) So the reason this fic makes this list isn't so much its quality (though I do still really like it!) but the fact that it was my first-ever completed fanfiction. I'd idly poked at the idea of writing fic a couple times before but never made much progress. I hadn't actually done any creative writing for years at that point. I came to fandom late due to a combination of being scared of the internet and, when I did check out my real-life friends' fandom blogs, feeling like everything was so focused on shipping that there would be no place for me and the kinds of stories I cared about. Gravity Falls changed that. I'd made friends and felt like part of a community for the first time. I'd read fanfic that I loved and that focused on the sorts of relationships I really cared about. And so finally I decided that even though it still felt really scary, maybe I would try my hand at actually writing and posting a fic of my own.

360,000 words and 54 works later, I still think it was a pretty good idea.

thanks for the fic rec! Mogami trauma is very fertile character building ground and it’s so blown past in the series…I mean I know mp100 isn’t evangelion but still. i indulgently want nightmares of horrifying plant abomination mogami

also not to darken your inbox with Discourse but the age thing,,, yeah. i found that out like a few months ago and it’s one of the reasons i will jerk away from fandom at large like a hot stove. i always assumed they were at least mid-20s bc (hc) mine has the eye bags of someone who never recovered from grad school tbh

literallyyyy i meanto me the mogami arc sticks out as the most hopeless feeling part of the series but him being deployed again against minegishi also reminds you of that horror.

i think it feels like a fairly complete arc. mob finally winning over him -> captured by matsuo -> escapes to defeat minegishi -> end of mogami, suits mp100 as a series. but as a minegishi main i like to make a fuss about it.

using their plants in battle as an extension of themself and suddenly having that control ripped away? must feel bone chilling. and it grabbing you by the throat with its skeletal form. much fun. i would like them to have nightmares about it, given that it was the most pivotal thing in their character development. i think that reminder of guilt and that they promised to be a good person would be good for them. i imagine it gives them an odd relationship with morality for a while as they start developing a conscience but it takes a while to get rid of the habits and attitudes they cultivated during and before their time at claw. i love self-flagellation

and yeah sorry for talking abt the age thing but i have thoughts... yeah i feel like NO ONE expected that, and i had fallen too in love with the guy i made up in my head for lack of information to be receptive to this new concept of them. I'm sure there's pretty interesting ground to be explored there re: Claw's child esper training etc but I just don't really care for it with respect to Minegishi. other people can tread that ground.

I just think there's a bit of romanticism in "you can restart life at any time" like in Serizawa's case. In typical Mobbed Psycho fashion I just think its funny to be told by a 14yo to get your shit together at Your Big Age. my personal hc is that they dropped out of university to join Claw because no other future seemed possible for them, even if they didn't entirely trust Suzuki (as mentioned in the WD-arc)

entering the real world at late-20s early-30s after losing developmental years to Claw and the difficulties from being an esper that led them to Claw in the first place. like moeeeee that's a kind of moe to me ...

For Hopepunk recs I've got Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. Genuinely. I love the ending so much and it's incredible. Also Mob Psycho 100.

I'd count Watership Down as hopepunk despite being the famous murder bunny book. It's genuinely one of my all-time favorite books. Also the Mistborn trilogy.

For music, Danger Days by MCR and Sinners by Barns Courtney. Glitter and Gold and Champion are also great hopepunk songs.

Finally, Welcome to Nightvale and the Strange Case of the Starship Iris are both incredible and I love them so much

Mob Psycho 100: middle school student, shigeo kageyama just wants to live a normal life, Despite his psychic powers. He is taken advantage of for said powers by a con man pretending to be a psychic, reigen arataka. He runs a business called Spirits and Such, where he (mostly mob) (that's shigeo's nickname) exorcises spirits bothering his clientele. Mob's powers are also a good metaphor for autism, I think it's canon that mob's autistic? Anyway, it's fuckin' fantastic. I love this. And I love mob?? Forever and platonically?? It's on Netflix, Hulu and Crunchyroll (season 1 is free but 2 & 3 need a premium subscription)

Sk8 The Infinity: high school student Reki introduces his new friend Langa to skateboarding, and. I can't recommend you watch this enoughm despite the simple premise I gave, it's fucking fantastic! I can't put these feelings into words!Please! It is free on Crunchyroll with ads, but the dubs after episode 3 require Crunchyroll premium.

Bocchi the Rock!: and here I thought mob was literally me! Hitori wants to be in a band, because in the words of the band that inspired her, a band is where an introvert can shine! She spent her days practicing and pouring her soul into the guitar, practicing to be ready to perform at her middle school's culture festival! But, well, in her own words,

"I practiced six hours every day, so I could learn how to play in front of people... The result? Middle school ended and I never played a single note for them! I never performed once... at the culture festival! I never put together... the members for a band! And I never made a single friend... In three whole years! Now, in high school... I gotta form a band or die trying! But, despite my vow, it's been a whole month since high school started, and yet my heart remains grounded in the guitar, little better than a shut in..."

Anyway, she joins a band and that's all I'm gonna say because thisssss is getting too long. She has social anxiety! Jus like me! Alright first things first, this shits adorable. Understatement! High school student Miyano befriends this guy Sasaki, and he gets interested in the bl manga that miya reads, and he borrows one. Much to Miyano's surprise, he loved it! ohhhhhgod i can feel the hyperfixation taking hold once again over time, they start to fall in love. Yeah, it's BL!!!! Fuxk! I love yaoi! I love life! The world hath gained colour! Funny part is, uh.miya's straight. He contemplates things on front of his bookshelf of BL manga. Taking a line from a summary I saw on YouTube, reading bl manga everyday and having an entire bookshelf of bl manga, while saying "yeah I'm straight!" Is a special kind of in the closet. Anyway fuckkkkkkkkkkkki love thsi series soooooososososososoo much. I have RAMMED MY HEAD INTO A WALL BECAUSE OF THIS. I HAVE PACED THE LIVING ROOM LISTENING TO THE SOUNDTRACK LIKE RETIRED MIDDLE AGED DETECTIVE GOING THROUGH A DIVORCE HAUNTED BY A COLD CASE HE JUST CANT CRACK BECAUSE OF THIS. granted that was me going delirious with hungerSASAMIYA IS MY REASON TO LIVE. anyway it is unfortunately exclusively on Crunchyroll for a premium subscription, but you can READ it!
