An Analysis of Ahsoka and Windu's Interaction in TCW Finale Season 7 Episode 11 - Why Windu's Comment is in the Right
It's been 28 days since the Clone Wars finale finished. It has been 31 days since Episode 11: Shattered aired. This was the infamous episode that had a good majority raging anger at Jedi Master/General and Council Member Mace Windu.
In the opening 5-6mins, we see the Jedi Council meeting via hologram, the scene we see taking place on Coruscant in Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith. Moments after, Ahsoka walks in with Rex. Now, this opinion might put me in the crosshairs of some people who will think differently, but I have an inkling or belief some are misinterpreting this particular scene.
Let me make it clear first: I love Ahsoka. She is one of the greatest characters brought into the Star Wars mythos by George Lucas and brought to life by Dave Filoni and voiced wonderfully by the talented Ashley Eckstein. Do you want to know how much Ahsoka Tano means to me? I wouldn't have come back and embraced Star Wars again had I not discovered her character watching random Rebels clips on YouTube which led me back to the Clone Wars ~2yrs ago.
I greatly thank Ashley Eckstein for bringing me back to the fandom. Back to the main point, separating voice actor/actress from their character. In my point of view, I'm NOT directing it at EVERYONE, but some of those who love or big fans of Ahsoka so much there's no fault in her. Her character had faults in the beginning and she's still a flawed character. Ahsoka is flawed, but so well written, she is relatable and to a certain degree, perfect. That's not what I'm on about. It's about the lash and some giving Windu the slap because of how he addresses and speaks to Ahsoka post-capture and detainment of Maul.
We all know, but to refresh some, Ahsoka Tano left the Jedi Order, this effectively removing her status as a Jedi Padawan and Commander of the 501st Legion of the Grand Army of the Republic. She chose to walk away and strip herself of everything, military rank and privileges. She is essentially a standard citizen trying to survive and make ends meet of a cruel galaxy, in a dying Galactic Republic. We are well aware, the twilight of the Republic and the Jedi was near, inevitable and unavoidable. So let me reiterate Ahsoka's stance, because this is an important point. Tano is a CITIZEN. She's a CIVILIAN.
Push forward to the Siege of Mandalore, without a doubt, some time has passed and Ahsoka's walkabout took place before the Bad Batch arc, with Republic on shaky battle grounds against the Separatists on Annaxes, which it's sitting on a major hyperspace lane direct to Coruscant (way too close for comfort).
By the time Ahsoka fills in the Council about the status of Maul and Mandalore, here comes the scene that had a lot of people running up the walls of how Windu addresses and treats Ahsoka. Let's remind ourselves of some vital quotes and points. Ahsoka was not a Jedi, she gave that up. She could have chosen to enlist directly into the GAR instead as a commissioned officer or take back her position as Commander via the GAR. Positions and military rank were given to the Jedi by their own status in the Order. Knights and Masters given General, Padawans ranked Commanders (Obi-wan an exception since he had a Clone Marshal Commander).
The Siege of Mandalore was going to be a sticky one despite success because Mandalore is a neutral planet, though it had links to the Republic, but is very much neutral. I won't go into complexities, but visit the YouTube channel Generation Tech, they did a very good exploration into it. I'll avoid politics standpoints for now.
Back to the primary point. Ahsoka stated she only fought in the siege as her duty as a citizen, but as not a Jedi.
"I did my duty as a citizen." - Ahsoka Tano
She also says prior to that statement:
"I will escort Commander Rex when he delivers him to Coruscant." - Ahsoka Tano
Finished with:
"No, not yet." - Ahsoka Tano
This is the key point here. Ahsoka is a citizen. She aided as a citizen, fought as a citizen and she is taking time out to escort Commander Rex and the 332nd back to Coruscant. After that, she would have went her separate ways (but we all know disaster strikes). To make it clear: Ahsoka Tano is a citizen who freely involved herself in what would have been a campaign, part of the Outer Rim Sieges and in extension, Jedi business.
Now, the statement Windu make upon the 'wrapping up' of the meeting.
"I'm sorry, citizen, but these are matters for the Council to discuss." - Mace Windu
And this where lovers of TCW nearly flipped the table. The scenario was read and interpreted as rude and maybe even condescending on Ahsoka, despite her service in the siege. However, I think the scene is being read incorrectly.
Ahsoka openly stated before the High Jedi Council that she is a citizen, only fought as her duty as a citizen. How often in real life do you hear a citizen involving themself in a military campaign? It's almost unheard of, but this is Star Wars and it's fiction, but there is real life influences that make logical sense.
In this case, there is without a doubt somewhere in the regulation handbook of the GAR that under any circumstances are civilians NOT to be disclosed to military information. Military information and even to involved in the Council meeting, it's something not be shared with a civilian. Sharing what is classified information is a MAJOR breach in security. I'm not saying Ahsoka is a spy (though she does become a pretty badass one one in Rebels), but because of her status as a civilian, she cannot be disclosed such information. Heck, even if the boys wanted to see her again, Ahsoka cannot walk into the Clone Barracks anymore. She probably can, unless someone escorts her, people like Rex or a fellow General such as Anakin.
We already know Windu is getting stressed by the war, almost desperate to end the war and we all know the action he takes in the film. Windu does love the Republic, if I'm correct, it was quoted in Stover's ROTS novelisation, he thought he is doing best for the Republic.
Anyways, I think there are those being too harsh on Windu. Think about it again, I'd you were in Ahsoka's shoes, a citizen after fighting in a siege, essentially part of the Clone Wars, neither you would be privy to sensitive information. Windu is stoic as it is, it's not his attitude, it's his tone that came across as condescending. He was only repeating what Ahsoka stated to them, so his mindset was: "alright, you called yourself a citizen, then you shall be treated as such". Yes, his tone might not have helped much, but he is right. Ahsoka could be disclosed what is highly sensitive and classified information. If they did, just because she used to be part of the Order, it is A MAJOR BREACH in security protocol.
To repeat: Windu is correct to tell Tano that she cannot be disclosed what goes on in a Council Meeting or the situation of the war. It is all down due her status as a citizen. It would be a different story if after leaving the Jedi, she reinstated herself by enlisting with the GAR.
Just remember that despite misgivings, Windu is a highly valued member of the Jedi Order and a highly skilled one. He is also powerful in the Force. Before the war broke out in 22 BBY, he was trained as a Jedi Guardian, up to the events of TPM, he was already a Master of the Order and even one of the best swordsman of the time. He was first taught under Grand Master Yoda, then his years as Padawan up to the Jedi Knight Trials learning under Jedi Master T'ra Saa. At a very young agree too, he discovered his rare Force ability to see shatterpoints in the Force. This skill greatly aided Windu at how hissy would his future actions, along with the vulnerability of the opponents he faced. Because of his ability in shatterpoint, Windu even had glimpses into parts of the future of how he works build his lightsaber.
Windu also created one off the most difficult lightsaber forms that the Jedi Order forbade except to even and perhaps even his own student: Master Depa Billaba. Quinlan Vos is another notable practitioner. A counteract style to Form VII: Juyo. He created Vaapad, along with another Jedi Master named Sora Bulq. Quoting Windu on his description when he created the form:
"I created Vaapad to answer my weakness: it channels my own darkness into a weapon of the light." - Mace Windu
Windu had his own struggles with the Dark Side and he channelled that into a form. To use ones own inner darkness and channel it into a weapon of the light and not even fall in the process. It's an opposite of Juyo, the style being more of a 'state of mind' and not just another fighting style. To channel their own darkness and accept the fury of an opponent whereas Juyo as described by Kreia:
"Predictably, he seeks to unbalance you with his erratic attacks. His technique is called Juyo, the most chaotic of the lightsaber forms. This form sacrifices much to bolster offense, leaving one exposed to attack by the Force." - Kreia
This post had gone on long enough, all I'm saying is to maybe read the interaction between Ahsoka and Windu a little bit differently. Windu is correct not to disclose classified information, even council information especially with her status as a civilian. Perhaps don't be quick to judge Windu or even just think twice. Sorry for the long post, but I needed to get out of my head.

Summary:
The only thing I can say for sure is that Anakin talks so much I barely have time to think. Which is something Iā€™m terribly grateful for.
Excerpts from the journal of a newly minted Jedi Knight.
I have smiled so much these past few days my facial muscles hurt. Smile for the Queen, smile for the Chancellor, smile for the cameras. Smile for Yoda and the Council.
Above all, smile for the boy.
Iā€™ve never felt less like smiling.
I am still on Naboo. It has been three days.
I wish I could spar.
*
I am finally back at the Temple; I suppose an entry is in order.
I would never have thought
It began When we It happened
I find I am at loss.
With all my belief in the power of words, Iā€™m beginning to think that some things just cannot be conveyed. Perhaps itā€™s for the better: let memories, sensations and emotions fade into the Force. Maybe, if never put into words, they will one day hurt less.
Who am I trying to fool?
Stick to the facts, one could say, but itā€™s an exercise in futility. Naboo Security has provided the Archives with footing of the whole incident; there is no need for me to write down what happened. By the way, I have not seen the footage; I think I never will. At any rate, its testimony is certainly more reliable than mine: my memories are but a red blur.
The only thing I can say for sure is that Anakin talks so much I barely have time to think. Which is something Iā€™m terribly grateful for.
Oh, here he comes.
*
And so it began: today we had our meeting with the Council of First Knowledge to devise a course plan for Anakin. I feel for him: coursework was hard enough for me, his schedule is going to be a nightmare. I suppose Dex will get more than his usual share of Jedi founds over the next few months: the least I can do is give the boy some treats.
Another thing that came out of the meeting was that, apparently, slaying a Sith Lord in mortal combat makes you qualify not only for Knighthood but for lightsaber classes too. Master Dralligā€™s schedule is full, so he will just teach Anakin the basic drills. The rest falls upon me.
When I brought the outcome of the meeting before the High Council for approval, Master Windu proposed to have Anakin join the Initiates classes, and I found myself forced to take exception. Just imagine, me going against the Master of the Order.
I said I wouldnā€™t subject the boy to what he will inevitably perceive as humiliating, being taught with children half his age. A Jedi shall know no pride, I know, but Anakin is not a Jedi yet. In time he will learn. I am glad that Master Gallia and Master Koon sided with me; in the end, even Yoda agreed.
It looks like Iā€™m taking up the mantle of maverick, doesnā€™t it? Wherever you are, Master, I hoper youā€™re having a good laugh.
Ah. I was almost forgetting. Satine sent condolences. Itā€™s hard to tell from a hologram, but she looked well. I do hope she is happy.
*
I already spoke of the perks of slaying a Sith Lord in mortal combat. Today I discovered the downside.
Sparring triggers memories. In hindsight it shouldnā€™t have been a surprise, but it was, and a most unwelcome one.
I would never have thought I would say this, but thank the Force I was sparring with Vos, and not with Garen or Tachi. Apparently, Quinā€™s line of work has somehow managed to put some tact in him; this is something I canā€™t say for either Garen or Siri.
Of course Quinā€™s first thought was the Mind Healers, but he agreed with me that some people on the Council would jump at the excuse to reassess my suitability as a Master, and this is something I canā€™t allow to happen.
Still, I need to fix this issue before I start one-on-one training with Anakin: he needs a Master in control. So in control I will be.
It is somewhat contrary to the point, but I wish I could just go out and get drunk.
Actually I could - Vos thinks I should, and who else is surprised? - but with all the coursework Anakin has we barely see each other during the day. I am not going to leave him alone in the evenings too. Besides, only the Force knows what kind of mechanical devilry I might find upon my return. No, better stay home and keep an eye on the boy.
*
Garen tells me I look better; Siri Tachi ā€“ and Iā€™m quoting here ā€“ says I look like shit. Bant just sighs. Reeft, of course, just eats.
It seems my mirror agrees with Tachi: I canā€™t say I liked what I saw when I shaved this morning. Maybe I should eat more.
I certainly should sleep more. Incidentally, Anakin and I make for a fine pair of insomniacs. When I woke up tonight - I donā€™t even need to say what I was dreaming of - I found him tampering with a droid on the couch. I canā€™t fathom how he managed to turn our living room into a dumpster in less than a week. I suppose heā€™s not used to having this many things around. Anyway, it comes out he has trouble sleeping: he says he has always had, for as long as he remembers. It doesnā€™t surprise me: his connection to the Force is impressive. Overwhelming, even, and dreams are an obvious outlet for the abilities he repressed for so long. In time, as he learns control, they will pass.
One of my suspicions turned out to be true: indeed, Anakin seems to find his peace of mind in tinkering with mechanical objects. Peculiar, to say the least. He showed me how to reprogram a vocabulator to make it compatible with non-droid units. The result is that our fridge now starts speaking every time we open the fruit compartment. For some reason, it only speaks Shyriiwook. Itā€™s quite entertaining, to be honest. I hope our laughing fits didnā€™t wake our neighbours in the middle of the night.
Even after all this, though, Anakin didnā€™t want to tell me what he dreamed of. I believe it was his mother.
I wish I could say I donā€™t know how it feels to miss a parental figure.
*
Today I lost my Padawan. We lasted together little more than three weeks.
I blame the debacle on astronavigation, my archenemy of old. It was clear from the start that Anakin doesnā€™t share my belief that flying is for droids, so asking Garen to tutor him seemed the natural choice. What I gained for my troubles was that Garen put the boy in a starfighter, and now theyā€™ve been gone for hours.
Thit is the reason why I write this journal in the first place: I learn from my own history so Iā€™m not doomed to repeat it. I will introduce Anakin to Vos when Iā€™m dead.
On the other hand, Iā€™m looking forward to introducing him to Tachi. Garen says Anakin is cute, and I must admit he is endearing: Iā€™m sure he will manage to thaw even Siriā€™s icy heart, and I will enjoy every second of it.
The nightmares donā€™t stop, neither for me nor for Anakin. Iā€™m getting sick of all that red.
*
I really wished Qui-Gon was here.
Iā€™m not sure Iā€™m ready for this Padawan business, and I have no idea how to deal with Anakinā€™s nightmares. He wonā€™t tell me what they are about, he wonā€™t meditate. We just spend our nights tinkering. Itā€™s not how it should be done. I am afraid Iā€™ll soon start spoiling him rotten. Look at me, Jedi Knight of the Republic, fussing over a child like a mother hen.
I should ask for help, I know I should, but I canā€™t risk the Council taking Anakin away from me. I promised I would train him, and I will.
I even tried searching the HoloNet for ā€œForce-sensitives nightmaresā€. Well, the results certainly made for an entertaining read; apparently, there is a Corellian Heavy-Isotop band named Force Nightmare. I had to laugh at my own folly, but self-pity will get me nowhere. Neither will all this caf, and I even hate the stuff, but I barely sleep and what else am I supposed to do?
All in all, today is not a good day.
I canā€™t even spar, and no amount of meditation seems to change that.
I lost control again in the Halls. Quin said I scared him.
All I see when I ignite my saber is red.
*
Shall I start from the good news or the bad?
Letā€™s start with the good news, laced with a little optimism. I spoke to Master Drallig: I had to. Anakin canā€™t be taught by a Master who goes on a murderous spree every time he lays his hand on a weapon. Master Drallig believes it will pass; according to him, it is a common occurrence in such a scenario. I donā€™t know how ā€œcommonā€ applies to the scenario ā€œMaster killed by a Sith Lordā€, but I will defer to Master Dralligā€™s wisdom, of course.
The bad news is, he told me he believes that what triggers my memories is my using the same moves Master Qui-Gon and I used during the duel. He believes that switching to another saber form could provide a solution, at least for the moment.
Needless to say, Iā€™m not particularly happy with the idea. Ataru in our lineage goes back to Yoda himself, and almost everything I know on lightsaber combat I owe to Qui-Gonā€™s training. Switching to another form tastes like betrayal.
Well, a Jediā€™s lot is to learn how to let go. For the moment, I will settle on ā€œlearn how to pretend to have let goā€.
I am summoned to the Halls of Training next week to see what form will suit me best.
*
First day out with my Padawan.
I never thought about what visiting Coruscant for the first time could feel like; Anakin was in awe.
Unfortunately, the awe soon morphed into a crazed frenzy.
Where he stores all that energy - or the ice-cream, the candies and the two cheeseburgers he ate, for that matters - is beyond me.
Dex loved him. I am exhausted.
I think Iā€™m going to sleep twelve hours straight.
Maybe tonight we wonā€™t dream.
*
A Jedi shall know no pride. A Jedi, though, still knows humiliation, and going through katas weaponless because Iā€™m afraid of myself was the epitome of humiliating.
Shii-Cho we didnā€™t even try. Soresu is not my style: too static and, I must say, a form focused on defence becomes boring soon enough. Juyo, the style of aggression, is out of the question. Shien is off the table too: Iā€™d sooner be dead than use the revers grip all its practitioners seem to favor. Itā€™s ugly. Master Drallig says I am vain; I suppose no one is perfect.
As for Djem-So, I donā€™t have the brute force it requires.
Unexpectedly, I found Nieman much to my liking: double wielding is perhaps a little flamboyant but, if done right, Form VI is well-balanced, physically challenging and aesthetically pleasing. I think I will give it a try: I could even use Qui-Gonā€™s crystal for the shoto.
What surprised me most, though, is Master Dralligā€™s verdict: he believes I would be proficient in Makashi, no less. Itā€™s a pity Master Dooku left the Order; I am not party to the specifics, but I seem to understand Qui-Gonā€™s death played a role in his decision. Be it as it may, Master Drallig himself offered to tutor me as soon as the Initiate term is over: I was speechless for a good ten seconds. I like Makashi fine, but I must admit Iā€™m not looking forward to specialize in a form meant for saber-to-saber combat. Iā€™ve had my share of duels with Force-wielders for a lifetime. Besides, if the Sith are really never more than two, what odds are there I will have to confront the other too?
We shall see what form the Force has in store for me.
In the meantime, I promised Anakin I would take him to the theater tonight. I must go get ready.
*
Now that I know, I wish I didnā€™t.
Anakinā€™s shields are not yet strong enough and our morning meditation betrayed him.
Apparently, the Naboo Security didnā€™t think a child was out of place in their headquarters, especially not the child who had blown up the mother ship. They didnā€™t pay him any mind, and he slipped in as they watched the security recordings: he saw it all.
I saw his dreams. It was him behind the ray shield, and me in the generator core.
It was the first time in my life I had to comfort a crying child. By the end of it, I was more distressed than he was. When at last he stopped crying he hugged me and thanked me and sauntered away towards the next droid adventure. Children.
Me, on the contrary, he left behind with words that will haunt me for a long time.
Master, will you leave me alone too?
*
I canā€™t stop thinking about Anakinā€™s nightmares. Too focused on my own grief, on my own loss, I never fully grasped the extent of his loneliness. True, I lost Qui-Gon, and before him I lost Tahl. But I still have Quinlan, Luminara, Bant, Reeft, Garen, Siri. I have Master Yoda, Master Windu, Master Drallig. Master Koon and Master Gallia. Ali-Alann.
The whole Order.
And then I have Dex and Guerra Derida and many more friends across the Galaxy.
I have Satine.
Anakin has only me. I canā€™t imagine how the fear of being left alone in the world must be eating at him.
I will not let him go through what happened to me.
I will not fail him.
His fate will not be the same as mine.
*
In the end the choice wasnā€™t even a choice. Soresu it is.
My survival has just become of the utmost importance - not that it wasnā€™t before, of course, I like life well enough, but now is paramount.
A Jedi wields is lightsaber in defence, and in defending me Iā€™m defending my Padawan as well.
Perhaps Soresu is the most Jedi-like form of all.
*
I spent so much time in the Training Halls I didnā€™t even realize I havenā€™t been writing for two weeks.
It was worth it.
Today my defeat was my triumph.
Predictably, Vos wiped the floor with me, but I managed to see the duel to its end without lashing out at my opponent. On second thought, I should have: he isnā€™t taking my commitment to Soresu seriously. He says Iā€™m too flashy for it. Iā€™ll show him flashy in a year, and thatā€™s a promise. Oh, and donā€™t even get me started on his uncivilized innuendos - or, well, straight out crudities - on the Way of the Mynock.
Of course my form was appalling; I wasnā€™t defeated before the minuteā€™s mark only because I threw in the mix a great deal of Shii-Cho and, to my utmost delight, some Ataru as well. There is much room for improvement, but Iā€™m getting the feel of it.
I must say that Form III looks versatile. Perhaps Iā€™ll manage turning it into something actually entertaining: I am not going to let my Padawan see lightsaber training as a boring endeavour. Soresu itself will have to adapt to our recreational needs.
Iā€™m looking forward to teach Anakin all I know and all I will learn over the next years. I want him to see how much delight is to be found in the Force - and in sparring, of course.
Master Drallig is right: I sound vain and arrogant, but today I just canā€™t find it in myself to indulge in self-flagellation: it just feels so good to be able to spar again.
It feels good to be looking forward to something again.

Writeblr WIP Blind Date
Iā€™m always happy for an excuse to interact with more writeblrs. Iā€™m surprising myself by choosing one of my fics that hasnā€™t actually been posted to AO3 yet (and that Iā€™m still working on an actual plotĀ for) because I just really like the premise and I love the characters
Title of your WIP: No title yet, but I mostly call it the chaos friendship fic.
The real title, when I decide on one, will either be a pun on books or magic or academia, or it will be a quote from wtnv (or from love is all you need to destroy your enemies) in the style of titles for fics in thatĀ series.
Genre:Ā fanfiction, crackfic, crossover, friendship centric, humorous tone, world-saving adventures?
(Crossover between: Harry Potter and a fic that is itself a crossover between Welcome to Night Vale and The Dresden Files)
Trigger Warnings: n/a so far, (probably canon typical violence)
Stage of writing process:Ā ā€œLol Hermione and Julie would be such great friends Iā€™d love to read about them interacting ...dang I guess I have to write that myselfā€
actually Iā€™ve come up with the premise of why theyā€™ve met in the first place, and written the middle third of a first chapter to lead them into interacting, but Iā€™m stuck on what the plot should be, which is complicated by the fact that the few ideas Iā€™ve had for plot directions require more knowledge than I actually have about the various magical government(s)/faerie courts of the Dresden Files universe to determine whether theyā€™re both plausible and feasible.
Synopsis: replacing this with Background because, as stated above, I have a premise for this fic but not so much a plot. 1-3 are genuinely background, and 4-7 are as close as I have to a story arc:
(1) MACUSA actually only controls the original 13 colonies (and the white council large parts of north america, though between the two groups they still probably donā€™t govern all magical people in the continent*)
(2) the ICW refuses to acknowledge that any magical government borders might not align with muggle/nomaj/mundane government borders, so MACUSA is the only government from within the muggle United States that gets invited/pressured to join the Statute of Secrecy
(3) There are repeated violations of the statute of secrecy reported in a particular town in the southwest of the united states
(4) Hermione Granger, famous and influential as she is in the aftermath of all of Harryā€™s adventures, is nominated as the representative to go and scold MACUSA for not controlling their citizens better
(5) Hermione gets to MACUSA and they treat her politely, but they firmly and immediately explain that theyā€™re not responsible, and then set her up with a portkey to Night Vale, where the violations have been
(6) Hermione promptly gets caught in the storm wards, since she arrived by magic. Julie and Carlos and at least one other scientist show up almost immediately - theyā€™re studying the storm wards to make sure theyā€™re behaving as intended
(7) and then Hermione and Julie become friends (after what incident that forces them to work together???) and then do something cool (but what????? idk yet)
Character information:Ā this is listed as a crossover between a fic series and a book series, rather than between two book series and a podcast, because Julie is an OC (effectively) from the fic series (does it count if none ofĀ ā€œCarlosā€™ scientistsā€ are named? they do technically exist in canon, but with basically no detail, at least in the first two or three years).
My fic will focus on Hermioneā€™s (bookworm, ruthless when necessary, a few years ago saved wizarding Britain from a terrorist along with her friends Harry and Ron) friendship with Julie (PhD, practical theoretical physicist, made a "science gunā€ and disassembled it for ethical reasons afterĀ killing a vampire with it, makes frequent pop culture references including teasing Carlos about having a wizard friend named Harry... yes her knowledge of the Harry Potter books will be addressed), with appearances from Carlos and the rest of daveā€™s characters, and probably some other night vale citizens, and maybe (if I borrow daveā€™s or my wifeā€™s familiarity with dresden files canon) certain members of the white council.
Mainly just the girls and their friendship though.
Links: I could have sworn I included the drafty partial first chapter in this, but itā€™s just another outline. ...if I canā€™t find a better link to edit in to this post, I might just add what I have of prose for this fic to the bottom of that google doc
There is a brief excerpt in this post as well (on my main blog, from before I made a separate writeblr sideblog) under the headingĀ ā€œChaotic Friendship crossoverā€
Thereā€™s also a summary in my WIP Masterpost but Iā€™ve said everything relevant with more detail in this post.
WIP tag:Ā Uh. You can also see all two of my posts that Iā€™ve got taggedĀ ā€˜chaos friendship ficā€™ and I could have sworn there were more but I canā€™t find them to add them to the tag...
Other WIP Information:
*Along with background point (1) under synopsis/background, I have a loose but persistent idea about indigenous wizards/mages/tribe-specific titles warding large swaths of land to be unplottable and heavily defended, and taking as many members (especially nonmagical, as magical people could defend themselves a bit better and also let themselves in later) of their tribes, as feasible into protected lands once it became obvious that white nonmagical people were determined to wipe out everyone else (and members of rival tribes were accepted into each othersā€™ spaces peacefully when colonists continued to get worse; uniting against a common enemy)... with the idea that the trail of tears and similar events had significantly less deaths (whether the deaths were faked, or whether white muggles were confunded to not notice/brush off the mass disappearances, or...?), and the people ā€œlostā€ were taken into protected lands that white nonmagical people canā€™t get into at all, and that white magical people will be fiercely fought against ....and I was going to look for a sensitivity reader if that headcanon became a bigger part of this fic because Iā€™m white and Iā€™ll 300% need it and itā€™s still just a half-developed side detail that may or may not make it into this fic, but Iā€™m sure will eventually make it into one of my fics thatā€™s set in both the Harry Potter universe and the USA. (If not this one, then probably my MCU/HP crossover. I just really donā€™t like the pottermore/word of god info about magical society in the americas, and I havenā€™t seen Fantastic Beasts and even if I cared about FB canon, even though MACUSA is in charge, those are mostly set in new york city (and Europe apparently?), so that doesnā€™t contradict my ā€œMACUSA is only in the 13 coloniesā€ detail)
Definitely going with the jokeĀ ā€œJK Rowling is actually Rita Skeeter, just selling to a new audience that wonā€™t realize sheā€™s telling the truth or when sheā€™s stretching itā€ as another background fact, but I donā€™t think the characters will ever figure out exactly who is masquerading as Rowling.
Constructive criticism: Yes? Tentatively? I mean this is intended to be crackfic, where characterization matters but realistic plot not so much. So keep that intended tone in mind when offering concrit, but at this point I think Iā€™ll welcome any (polite) feedback on this story even if itā€™s negative. (just try not to be purelyĀ negative, yeah? Long term I appreciate concrit, but short term itā€™ll bother me disproportionately, even when I asked for it, and triply so if itā€™s not balanced)

Missed Classic 65: Spellbreaker (1985) ā€“ Introduction
Written by Joe Pranevich
From the earliest days of the company, Infocom had one tradition: a new Zork title released every fall. After Zork III, the baton was passed to the Enchanter series which, as patient and dedicated readers know was just the second Zork trilogy. October of 1985 was no exception with the launch of Spellbreaker, the conclusion to the second Zork trilogy. But 1985 wasnā€™t like previous years at Infocom. Layoffs had begun to stem the bleeding from Cornerstoneā€™s commercial flop. A Mind Forever Voyaging wasnā€™t a commercial success and Fooblitzky had sold only five hundred copies by mail-order. I cannot imagine what the feelings were around the Infocom offices. Could this be the end?
Of course, we know it wasnā€™t, but Spellbreaker does mark the end of one era. It is the last of the original six Zork games. Other than a 1997 marketing tie-in, itā€™s the last Zork to be written by the original collaborators, Marc Blank or Dave Lebling. Itā€™s nearly (but not quite) the last game to be released by an independent Infocom. Itā€™s also one of the games that I have most looked forward to playing in this marathon.
What? No library book?
In some ways, Spellbreaker is a return to form for the Zork series. After handing off the reins to their flagship series to the ever-capable Steve Meretzky for Sorcerer (1984), Dave Lebling returned to tackle this game solo. Lebling has been one of the most prolific designers for Infocom with both a literary style and a penchant for strong puzzle design. In addition to co-writing the first four Zork games, he also wrote Starcross and received a co-credit for the story on The Witness. The development of Spellbreaker should have been a well-trodden path, but it did hit a few wrinkles.
The biggest issue was, strangely, the title. Lebling wanted the title to be Mage, a natural continuation (of a sort) from the previous two games. The title would represent the increasing maturity of the protagonist from a lowly ā€œEnchanterā€ to a powerful ā€œSorcererā€ and then to a presumably more powerful ā€œMageā€. While I understand the desire for theming, I agree with the push-back from the marketing folks. Those three terms do not represent (to me) anything like a progression and I wouldnā€™t necessarily be able to say whether an Enchanter is any more or less powerful than a Mageā€“ and this comes from a deep love of fantasy literature since childhood. ā€œArchmageā€ might have worked better for me, but that wasnā€™t one of the suggestions. Lebling was quite put off by this marketing pushback and eventually even snuck a protest into the game: a very small portion of the time, the gameā€™s title screen will say Mage instead of Spellbreaker.
A second option that was explored and ultimately rejected was to add the Zork name back to the series: Zork VI: Spellbreaker. In my view with more than a little hindsight, that would have been the best approach. At this stage, the Zork name was still selling games like hotcakes. Zork I was the #2 selling Infocom game in 1985, behind only Hitchhikerā€™s Guide. Zork II was #5, behind AMFV and Spellbreaker. Iā€™ll have more to say about this in an upcoming post, but the fact that Infocom wasnā€™t embracing the one brand of their own that was still successful in the marketplace is crazy. Whateverā€™s Leblingā€™s artistic sensibilities were, he was senior enough in the organization that he should have understood the value in a brand. Thanks in part to a name that didnā€™t click with consumers, Spellbreaker would actually have negative sales in 1986, as store returns for unsold inventory would offset otherwise strong sales in 1985. For my money, I am most concerned about the title because it is itself a spoiler (albeit a subtle one) for the game. Although I have not played this game more than a few minutes twenty years ago, I do know how it ends.
The cards are cute at least.
As in the previous games, there are a few includes ā€œfeeliesā€ with the game. Most notably, the manual is augmented by the ā€œFrobozz Magic Magic Equipment Catalogā€ for the year 966. Special crisis edition! In it is a number of advertisements for wands and magic carpets, some of which might be applicable in the game, but if so I donā€™t see how yet. While the previous feelies had a good sense of humor about them, I cannot help but to find this included catalog as being tacky. Full-color glossy product photographs and low-rent model wizards with forced smiles just doesnā€™t feel like Zork to me, although the series has always been a blend of fantasy and modern.
In addition to the catalog, the game comes with a series of wizard trading cardsā€“ my bet is that they are this gameā€™s equivalent of the Infotator and will be required for copyright protection. Each card contains the picture of a notable wizard, a quote, and some random statistics including their Double Fanucci handicap. What is Double Fanucci? Itā€™s an in-universe card game, although I cannot recall if I know that because of previous games or if itā€™s something that stuck with me from a later one.
Letā€™s play the game!
No pompous title screens here!
The game begins in the middle of a magicianā€™s council. After our exploits in the previous games, we are now a guildmaster and attending a conference with the other buildmasters of the Empire. Magic, it appears, is failing. One by one, witnesses come forward to discuss their magical problems like pastry chefs that are forced to fold pastry by hand or brewers that rely on magic to brew their beers. One canā€™t help but wonder if one of the issues isnā€™t overuse? If magic is being used for all of these mundane things, is that draining the universe of its magical energy? I hope that doesnā€™t turn out to be the problem, if I guessed it in the first screen,
Of course, I am playing an adventure game and so Iā€™m taking notes as the townsmen are speaking. The baker uses the ā€œglothā€ spell to fold his pastry, for example, while the ā€œfrippleā€ spell keeps monsters away from the towns. I also take the time to check my inventory: I have a burin for writing magical things like scrolls, a knife, and my trusty spellbook. My spellbook in specific seems to have been drained since the last game as once again I just have a small number of spells. Thereā€™s a brief in-game explanation that many of the spells that I once knew no longer work due to the crisis.
The ones I have left include:
yomin ā€“ mind probe
rezrov ā€“ open locked doors
frotz ā€“ give off light
gnusto ā€“ write a spell into our spell book
malyon ā€“ animate
jindak ā€“ detect magic
lesoch ā€“ gust of wind
Of those, we have our stalwarts ā€œrezrovā€, ā€œfrotzā€, and ā€œgnustoā€ that have appeared in all three games. ā€œYominā€ and ā€œmalyonā€ were added in Sorcerer, while ā€œjindakā€ and ā€œlesochā€ are brand new to this game.
Ribbit?
While I was listening to the townspeople rant about their problems, a shadowy figure snuck into the back of the room and transformed everyone into frogs! Everyone except me, that is. Why was I spared? Was it deliberate or an accident? I chase the assailant south out of the guildhouse and into Belwit Square, but heā€™s able to cast some sort of smokescreen and teleport away. I use the new ā€œlesochā€ spell to clear the smokeā€“ I have to do it twice because it failed the first timeā€“ but he is long gone. Only a featureless white cube remains where the figure once was.
I grab it and head back into the guildhall. As I ran past before, I didnā€™t see some bread and fish on the table and I grab those now. I hope that doesnā€™t mean we have an eating mechanic in this game. Itā€™s been a while since weā€™ve had one of those! I try to ā€œyominā€ the frogs to read their minds, maybe get some wisdom from my fellow elders, but all they are thinking about now is flies.
Borphee awaits, but my explorations are in vain as the city is more or less an illusion. East and west just end up having me get turned around and we end up right back where we started. South of the square is the Manse where the Mayors of the city live and work, but itā€™s locked and guarded. Whatever I need to do isnā€™t that way. Fortunately, it doesnā€™t take me more than a few moments to figure out what I can do: in my spellbook is a new spell which I have never seen before: ā€œblorpleā€, to explore mystic connections. With no better ideas, I cast ā€œblorpleā€ on the cube and am transported to a dark room.
Our adventure begins!
Time played: 30 min Inventory: rye bread, smoked fish, magic burin, knife, spellbook Spell Book Contains: yomin, rezrov, frotz, gnusto, malyon, jindak, lesoch, blorple
Since this is an Introduction post, itā€™s time to guess the score! The current average score for an Infocom game is 38 points. Leblingā€™s previous eight games are slightly above that, averaging 39 points: mainframe Zork (41 points), Zork I (35), Zork II (32), Zork III (42), Starcross (37), The Witness (50), Enchanter (37), and Suspect (38). Of those, Lebling was co-designer on the Zork games and Enchanter, while only provided some story guidance on The Witness. Lebling appears to be quite consistent in his scores and I have a feeling weā€™ll have a number of guesses in that range.
Note Regarding Spoilers and Companion Assist Points: Thereā€™s a set of rules regarding spoilers and companion assist points. Please read it here before making any comments that could be considered a spoiler in any way. The short of it is that no CAPs will be given for hints or spoilers given in advance of me requiring one. As this is an introduction post, itā€™s an opportunity for readers to bet 10 CAPs (only if they already have them) that I wonā€™t be able to solve a puzzle without putting in an official Request for Assistance: remember to use ROT13 for betting. If you get it right, you will be rewarded with 50 CAPs in return. Itā€™s also your chance to predict what the final rating will be for the game. Voters can predict whatever score they want, regardless of whether someone else has already chosen it. All correct (or nearest) votes will go into a draw.
