Luz never actually put together that those child-sized tunnels belonged to her, and meanwhile in the present Kiki is having paranoia spirals that THE EMPRESS KNOWS ABOUT ALL MY SECRET ESCAPE ROUTES AND SHE MUST KNOW THAT I KNOW BECAUSE SHE USED TO LEAVE STUFFED TOYS IN THERE FOR ME TO FIND, OF ALL THINGS, WHAT SICK GAME IS SHE PLAYING

DELIGHTFUL. it's entirely possible luz left stuffed animals in there by accident for ADHD reasons, or she left them in there to come back to later, but i'm also like. Wildly Fond of the mental image of her just.... being a very sweet babby. who DID clock that the tunnels were kikimora's. pint-sized kindergartener luz finds a bunch of the passageways bc she sees kikimora come out of them (cackling and rubbing her hands together maniacally, as she does) and she's like "hmm.... kiki seems so sad and mad all the time..... maybe a visit from Mr. Slithers will help :)" mister slithers is, of course, some kind of terrifying wild-eyed toothful snorse puppet thing that luz got from Who-Fucking-Knows-Where. & thinks is The Best.

kikimora is convinced it was a premeditated threat from a sadistic mastermind.
