Hello loving not heyting do you have any recommendations on learning about anti-psych position/movement? For someone who really wants to understand the position does anti-psych also go in fields such as psychology and psychoanalysis? Does it propose reforms or abolition?

i have not read much anti psych "theory" tbh, and when ive tried reading any of it it often comes across with the same pitfalls common to a lot of leftist "theory" anyway: high on abstract speculation about the social role of psychiatry, low on concrete details; keen on pinning all our hopes on the abolition of capitalism or the state in such a way as to demoralise rather than inspire. i have looked a bit into more focused activist organisations like akathisia alliance that have been helpful. i also found, way back and diffusely in a way hard to either clearly recall or recommend central cases of, some autism self advocacy work that helped set me on a saner path generally; lydia xz brown, mel baggs, other internet activist microcelebs. there was more wheat with them i think than "mad liberation" and "anti psych" stuff generally (common autist w) but also still a fair amount of chaff. he is definitely NOT antipsych, but scott alexander had some helpfully sober assessments of the efficacy and drawbacks of ssris in particular (tho this example feeds into the next genre)

more illuminating than anything to me has been reading from "the enemy:" actual literature by psychiatrists and their partisans. actually looking thru the existing medical literature on antipsychotics (efficacy, side effects, etc), in particular, did more to radicalise me on the topic than any antipsych propaganda. partly in terms of laying out the problems with the medications, partly by exposing how fundamentally unrigorous a lot of this research is. (i remember once looking into a taxonomy of extrapyramidal conditions, then into i think parkinsonism in particular, and seeing the list of symptoms include... "extrapyramidal symptoms".) i used to binge read the neurodivergence-unfriendly spectrum news and you could just regularly see them report the stupidest or most degrading bullshit without an ounce of incredulity, like this piece which makes me almost too angry to articulate the retardation involved (moral luck is an open philosophical problem, not a settled fact about "theory of mind") or this piece hailing the coercive implantation of mind control chips in an adult womans brain in order to curb her excessive hand washing. academic research on the subject inspires in me similar sentiments. the dsm itself, current and past editions, can be an extremely instructive read. i could go on, theres a lot to look into here

i get the impression that ppl styling themselves as anti psych or psych critical tend to go soft on a lot of more "analytic" (freudian) approaches; here are two examples of this brand of shameful dereliction of reason. which is the opposite of helpful to me bc i was made to see freudians from ages 4 to 25, and coming to grips with the truly rank pseudoscience of freudian theory was an important step in my self devt

sorry this answer is sort of all over the place. my feelings about the psychiatric system were not really forged by reading a couple of big thought provoking books, sadly

- i read transcendent kingdom for a lit class and it CHANGED MY LIFE. its depiction of addiction, trauma, and its lasting impacts are sooo poignant and

- caught up on raise no tanin ga li (ii?) and it’s a fun read :3 i like the dynamic of the main couple and the yakuza/gang setting allows them to be a lil ridiculous despite just being high schoolers LOL. also the art style is so clean + unique??? obsessed

in my modern au she’s also a stress baker but she hasn’t had a lot of chances to bake in canon. also even if she did she doesn’t eat much, & therefore doesn’t cook much

for that matter: doesn’t really eat much! she doesn’t have an aversion to food or anything; she’s just not hungry. (this is a quirk of her anti-magic/magic absorption ability, tho she doesn’t find that out until a few chapters in the fic/after almost 30 years of having it

thinks better when she’s moving or doing something. likes to go on walks, but pacing will suffice

sharpening her daggers/weapons is a calming act for her

loves spicy things, & has a high spice tolerance. discovered this during her time in Tierani / the desert country.

during daydream scenarios, smth that crops up pretty often is her enjoying ‘weird’ food combinations?? i’m not sure exactly what that looks like for her/the setting, but it’s a thing.

rarely seen without her armor. this will change later, as it’s a quirk/symptom of her ptsd, but for now? armor. (in modern au this probably translates to turtlenecks / layers—even in summer.)

Black hair, w/ some curl/wave. Usually kept braided, & pinned to the crown of her head, but when it’s loose/not pinned, it falls below her shoulder blades/above the small of her back.

Green eyes, with a golden ring around the pupil.

Freckles on her cheek bones, nose bridge, & shoulders.

Facial scar—3 diagonal slash marks, from right temple to left jaw. (I’m pretty sure? The slash marks are def there but I do get confused on what direction they would realistically be lol) It missed her eye but did catch the corner of her mouth.

Large, sharp pointy ears. Will occ remind people “they aren’t this large just for show” when she overhears things they think she wasn’t close enough for.

Curvier body type, muscles hidden by a layer of fat

No tattoos atm, or birth marks.

The only other scar I’ve mapped out is one on her back—also 3 diagonal marks, starting at her shoulder and ending by her ribs. (Though I’ve changed a bit of her backstory & that MAY not be relevant anymore??)

That said she definitely has other scars. Quite a few of ‘em.

Not really a body feature exactly but! Rarely seen w/o a pair of pearl earrings, as they’re enchanted to work as hearing aids. She can maintain the spell w/o them but it uses up a bit of focus. W/o these she doesn’t hear v well

Got an ask about how I do my edits, so here’s a quick rundown.

Under a read more for the sake of everyone’s dash

I’m making icons here, so I started with a canvas that’s 300x300 (my default icon size). Headers I do 1280x720, and wallpapers I do 360x630, but the overall process is the same.

I chose my art - here it’s the p5r render of Ren. I opened it on it’s own, copied it, & pasted it onto my icon. Resized & positioned it how I want.

Now I chose my background color. I always do the background color in a separate layer. So I make a new layer, put it under the layer that has the art, and fill it completely with my background color. Pretty simple stuff so far.

Next, I do shadows/outlines. It’s just a stylistic choice to add these, but I tend to think the icons are a little plain without them. These go in their own layers, beneath the art but above the background.

To make shadows, I right-click on the art layer and scroll to the bottom of the pop-up menu, clicking on “alpha to selection.” That selects everything on the layer that is not transparent. This selection stays, so click on to the layer you want to add the shadow on and fill the selection with the color you want (I always do black).

So now you should have a layer that’s just like a blacked out version of the art. Move it, so it looks like a shadow being cast by the art. Usually I just shift it to one side, as long as the edges of the blacked out art aren’t visible, you can move it as far as you want. For example, this shows the edges of the layer, so I wouldn’t wanna move it that far

I set this layer to “overlay” or “grain merge.” Grain merge works better for lighter colored backgrounds, but here’s a comparison between them:

Do whichever you prefer! Personally, I feel like for this icon, overlay is too light but grain merge is too dark, so I’m going to set it to grain merge and lower the opacity a bit.

Usually, that would be the end of it! Export it, and that’s all! If I’m going for variety (for icon sets, perhaps) I might export this and then do a different background color.

However, I also mentioned outlines! To make those, it’s actually easier than shadows. It starts the same way - right click the layer with the art and choose “alpha to selection”. However, instead of filling this selection right away, we’re gonna go up to the menu bar at the top of the window and click the ‘select’ tab. Scroll down to ‘grow’.

This opens a pop-up, where you can input how many pixels you’d like the selection to increase by. Generally I use 5 as a starting point, and then I can increase/decrease that number based on whatever I think looks best for the edit.

Again, on a layer below the art, you fill this selection with whatever color you’d like. Usually I go for white, but since this particular art already has a yellow outline, I used the same yellow. I actually did two outlines (both in their own layers, the smaller yellow one above the larger white one).

It’s really done now! You can do shadows and outlines together, if you feel so inclined! I think it tends to make the art look a little like a sticker if you do a white outline and a shadow together, which can be a cute effect.

Priya: A big sweetie but an early to mid boot, probably gets taken advantage of somehow, I don’t think she’s fully gonna snap but she probably does get to throw something at someone so good for her. Her design is a bit bland, I think she could maybe use a small detail like a hair clip/headband or something to make her stand out more, but it’s cute :0

Millie: Very responsible and kind, sort of “mom-like”, but learns she doesn’t have to be so nurturing to everyone/deal with the problems of others once Priya is voted out maybe? I think she at least gets past the merge. She has one of my favorite designs I love her everything

Ripper: A sarcastic little asshole but not to the point Noah was, he’s just like clever and witty but doesn’t really piss people off and he’s way more chill to try stuff. Idk how far he gets maybe an early boot maybe like middle post-merge. He’s a cute lil guy

Damien: Very easy-going, that’s really all I have to say about him. I think he’ll be kind of an early boot but he’s cool. Love his designs tho, the shades of blue and green w yellow accents. Yasss.

Axel: Very tough, very jaded, but also like a little unhinged as she deserves. Sort of like season one gwen if she got to be feral. Definitely going to go far (at least I hope pleaseeee go past the merge Axel ily). She’s so cool easily one of my favorite designs, very fresh and grunge

Chase: Already like him. He seems very milquetoast and just like your classic supportive friend but I like that and hope he gets around the merge. His design has just enough spice, I love his hair and head shape. He does dress like Cameron tho which, sorry cameron, is not a compliment

Zee: Funky, very funky, seems very chill and happy. I think they have a silly voice. They probably get voted out early but they have a good time. Everyone shits on them for their weird shapes but I love them. Very weird /pos

Scary Girl: Probably gonna be another top 3 antagonist with some mysterious sympathetic past. Goblin-esque but more in like an eerie way than a manic way. Obviously I love a good goth, the dark Lolita dress is very like rare in the td style and I love it actually

Caleb: Early boot, a bit dumb, idk that’s most of what I have to say. He’s chill, pretty normal. His design is cool tho I love the pastels on the clothes mixed with the sort of ruddy/cool skin and hair tones

Nichelle: Hot take I think she’s gonna be an early boot. She’s a blogger maybe? Or an influencer? Idk. She’s pretty chill though, I think she and Julia are either good buds or natural enemies. Her hair is so cute tho and her color scheme

Julia: I know people think she’s a villain but I think she’s gonna be more of a chill Bridgette type who’s just trying to get through. Definitely post-merge. Smokes weed. Her design is very basic but it’s alright, it’s recognizable, I like the more muted colors as opposed to the old td bright yellow blondes with neon clothes. She does feel like a shitty modern disney edit by a tik toker as a person tho

Bowie:…Definitely gonna be a stereotypical gay character. I mean. Come on. But whether they do it in a fun way or a shitty way is yet to be revealed. Maybe mid season? Also is an antagonist at some point. He’s okay, punchable face and ugly green pants but his color scheme and jewelry are nice

Wayne: The more outspoken one of the pair. He and Riu are like Katie and Sadie but more chill idk. Kinda just a guy

Riu: Takes the backseat to Wayne but still a nice guy, just shyer. I feel like Wayne gets voted out and Riu has to adjust without him like how Sadie would’ve in season one if the writers weren’t cowards. Also just a guy tbh their designs are okay but like forgettable

Emma: Sweet pushover horse girl. She and Priya are also friends but Emma’s more observant idk when she gets booted but I hope she stays for a bit I like her. Her design is sooo cute tho she’s very warm and friend shaped and has just enough detail

MK: A little judgmental and a bit gremlin-y but overall chill. I know they’re gonna get the early boot due to a misunderstanding or rumor. Very nice colors I love the warm cools and cool warms (this is minus the weird bright yellow skin which…mmmmm yuck), love their layers, why are they so smalllll

no one's publicly talked shit dw, i just have friends in all sorts of places and i basically am aware that some people refuse to read sadf or are simply upset that sadf is as popular as it is - and i tend to be good at sensing when people don't like me. usually tho if i used to be friends w someone that started to dislike me i tend to want to disprove that as much as i can... but i can tell. i've got good gut feelings and well sometimes those gut feelings receive concrete proof. most of it is misplaced jealousy and different tastes and preferences usually. not too deep. like there are people who resent heatwaves and think it doesn't deserve to be as popular as it is and people who resent mangobaii and thinks it doesn't deserve clout (ive seen people say it spits in the face of writers who 'actually work hard on their fic' or something crazy like that)

so like OBVIOUSLY some people will hate sadf. be it blindly or for reasons they perceive to be reasonable. obviously sadf is not anywhere near what heatwaves was or what happened with mangobaii. i don't think i am like MASSIVELY revolutionary or that im the best ever or anything but i do think i tend to be different enough that it stands out but can also rub some people the wrong way. and well... since im a writer it doesn't shock me that some writers are jealous because i would also be if i were them. but im me! so thank god i guess. and i mean. sadf was a calculated effort of mine. it was a LOT of luck but also hard work and strategy. a lot of the success sadf has received was also due to you guys :) so i'm very very grateful for that. but yeah. i started writing sadf in late september and didn't start publishing till january this year. i read and reread what i've written over and over and i've rewritten and edited every scene to some degree. i put a lot of passion into it! and i like that it has a very absurd name. its the whole point. and some people will appreciate that and my idiosyncrasies and my writing style and my sense of humor - and some won't. so... it is what it is. i just think that the people who don't like sadf either didn't give it a chance or what they like differs a LOT from me -> meaning that if they are a writer id probably think their work sucks too. so. live and let live i suppose!

first draft of a boom redesign for shadow and a design for rossum.

the reason i did this was mostly bcs like,,, i was watching the boom show and it made me realize they introduced all this new lore and really shaked things up and then they just. plopped shadow in as he was, like the only real change was making him MORE of a prideful jerk (almost like a certain prince a lot of people compare him to..) and then just?? never explain anything???? so im connecting him more into the universe by tying him into some of the unique elements the boomverse had to offer. no sports tape tho, sorry.

also i did boom!rossum bcs the idea of these two being a sort of yzma and kronk/pinky and the brain style duo cracked me up. i take my baby and i make them BIG.

in this au they woke up together and thus just are just regular siblings no angst edition. the pair of them are from the time of the anicents and were woken up recently (either by eggman or sonic or both). shadow is the “ultimate fusion of technology and organic life” (*sonic voice* yeah im just gonna shorten that to “ultimate lifeform”) and rossum was a failed prototype of said plan. shadow seems to have some grand overaching goal and rossum is just along for the ride.

im just gonna ramble a lil more under the cut.

shadow

shadows kinda got his own thing going on and is much less vegeta and more just like, mysterious kinda brooding anti hero. got a strong sense of justice, which can sometimes manifest uh, violently, if he feels the situation calls for it. initally he’d prefer not to fight sonic and co but if he gets in his way he’ll crush him, but after fighting sonic both of them realise it was kind fun. their rivalry is a lot more friendly tho either will take any oportunity to fight the other. also im keeping the fact he’d blow up the universe if he felt embarrassed mostly bcs i think its really goddamn funny, ross can usually talk him out of that tho.

design wise i gave him a lot more chest fluff to obsuce that mysterious collar(tm) around his neck. gave him some funny shapes on his forehead and chest to make him look different from regular vers shadow (mostly inspired by these other boom redesigns). the belt i gave him is based on the mind control device from shattered crystal and is supposed to be one that he repurposed. his inhibitor rings have these lil crystals that like bounce back his power (i just wanted them to be a lil more detailed to draw a lil more attention to them). also his rocket boots are heels bcs i think it would be funny if he was short and also the fact they work like actual rocket boots (like. he can fly w them) reminded me of starscream. also in the sketch i gave him a cape bcs i was originally going to give him one to go w his whole brooding loner thing but i thought it might be a little,, boring? and cover up too much of his design?

rossum

rossum isnt as active as a character as shadow is, theyre generally more reacting to situations as opposed to causing them. theyre still a lil dumb but its more,, being naive about Literally Everything (whereas shadow was let out during the past it seems rossums freedom/time to develop was a lot more limited). theyve still got a gentleness to em but unlike their regularverse theyre very much not a pacifist - though they dont enjoy fighting, but are good at it and thus often have to be encouraged into fighting by shadow. often times if theyre fighting the good guys rossum takes on the rest of team sonic whilst sonic and shadow have their Rival Brawl Fight. despite that i think rossum actually likes team sonic and considers them their friends. i think them and knuckles would be good pals bcs theyre both big and dumb and sweethearts.

onto the design: theyre supposed to be a sorta inbetween of knuckles and the regular sonic character body type, so theyre big but not as big as him. third eye was replaced with shape (since theyre not aliens anymore). rossum also has a collar tho unlike shadow theirs is cracked. they also have the same inhibitor rings, tho the crystal has either been torn or broken off at some point. it might be hard to tell but their gloves and boots are now armor to play into their role as kinda shadows body guard, also the boots loose their rocket spots bcs i couldn’t see them using it like shadow would during combat.

Kazama: It turns out it was Hijikata. What brings you here? If you want to leave please turn right and head straight.

Hijikata: Someone just came in, why are you already trying to chase them away! I was just worried about Yamazaki, so I came to check on him. 

Kazama: Yes. Then if you're done, hurry up and leave.

Hijikata: You bastard.... Anyway, where is Yamazaki?! I don't see him...

(door opens)

Yamazaki: Kazama-senpai, excuse me. I've finished changing clothes...

Hijikata:……Yamazaki?!

Yamazaki: I'll think of this as a a work uniform! Anyway, Kazama-senpai, about the content of that work...

Kazama: Che, don't tell me that you aren't able to do unless you receive orders from me? It's such a waste that you are unable to understand your superior's mind, and require someone to explain everything to you so that you can act. 

Yamazaki:...!!

Hijikata: I'm afraid that if you searched the entire world, the only person who would be able to understand your mind, would be Amagiri?!

Kazama: No choice then. I shall mercifully/gracefully provide instructions to those that are stupid. There will be a meeting to pay for club activities/budget meeting for all of the clubs tomorrow. However, only a handful of reports have been submitted, and what has been isn't sufficient to be used as materials/ a reference to approve of the clubs' expenses. In other words, you should go investigate for me to see if all of the club activities are actually being held. 

Yamazaki: Understood! Which clubs [tl is for "department] do I need to investigate?

Kazama: Needless to say, it's all the clubs within Hakuo Gakuen. The deadline is today.

Hijikata: Don't be so forceful [ridiculous!]!! Have you even thought about how many clubs there are at this school?!

Kazama: Amagiri and Shiranui would complete this within an hour, which this trivial matter cannot be considered a problem. If this can't be done, I won't force it. This only proves to me that you do not have a good eye for talent from the help you recommended to me, Hijikata [gave up rewording after 8 times].

Yamazaki:...I understand. I will certainly be able to investigate all of the clubs today!

Yamazaki: I tore it up to show you————!! [im guessing this is more "i pushed myself" or "I'm going to tear that up." probably the latter]

I'm thinking about possibly doing some genshin fics (both bc I need friends and also I could probably do it more often than art rip lmao) and just wanted to know of you had any advice (on how characters work / who might be the hardest to write etc)

These are a little less 'tips' and more on advice ig ?? These are what I personally find works for me, but I still hope they can help you somehow <33 Good luck on getting into writing :DD I hope it turns out well for you ! <3

If im being honest one of the biggest tips I can give is read a lot of fics, learn what it is about those fics that you like in terms of style + flow + wording (or in this case, how they write their characters) and then sorta,,, Use it as inspiration or keep it in mind while you write your own fic akjsdnas

How characters work is a little tricky to answer generally, since y'know, it varies depending on the character, and getting into that is like a whole other post itself per character. Some characters might be a bit more restless, fiddling with their clothes when they have nothing to do with their hands, or unconsciously walking around, while others are at ease with doing nothing and just standing completely still. There takes a bit of learning about them and interpretation to get their mannerisms down to what you think is accurate tbh

Most of the genshin charas also have quite a lot of depth and substance to their personality, too, so it's hard to generalize them according to their first impressions or to group them together and say 'these two characters act exactly alike.' Like, from an outsider's perspective, one might say that Childe and Thoma actually have similar personalities, and on the surface, they're not wrong, but in truth these two are actually relatively opposite-different in terms of personality.

And like, the difficulty on writing a character depends, too. Personally, I find it easier to write characters that are similar to me in personality and that can vibe–– so, like, Childe, Thoma, etc because it's easier for me to imagine myself in their shoes and write what their actions would be in a certain situation because I'm essentially writing my own actions.

More serious characters like Albedo, Rosaria, Sara or even Zhongli are a bit difficult for me, since it takes more effort to try and emulate them well in my writing (and sometimes I'm unsure if I even do it well haha.) They're the ones who take a bit of editing to do, a bit of perusing the voice lines and favorite fics for me to come up w/ something I'm satisfied with.
