NATLA Ep. 5 "Spirited Away" initial thoughts
Alright, the shuffling around continues even in an episode that generally follows its ATLA equivalent quite closely. The Gaang's A plot only diverts when both Katara and Sokka also get stuck in the Spirit World and I do like how we kept our team together as they can use the shared screen time. It seems we're leaving the Water Sibs mostly behind in the next episode, which is looking to be a mix of eps 8, 11 and 13 but I enjoyed this Swamp-like take on their Spirit World journey. The big shame about placing that here is that Yue can't be Sokka's ghost and there's some rewriting of Hakoda and Sokka's backstory here but it's a change I can get behind potentially. As for Katara, oh boy they really packed a punch for her. Her parts are obviously something I have a lot of feelings on and will get into later but I do find the framing clever overall. If very, very brutal for our Water Siblings.
Gyatso being there for Aang in the Spirit World, oh my, now this is a change I can really get behind. Wan Shi Tong's inclusion felt a little gratuitous but I like how they introduced something that is actually a LoK and not ATLA concept, the Fog of Lost Souls. And June's inclusion also makes sense, and will presumably lead to Roku's Island and the merging of The Blue Spirit plot. Overall, I dig how they merge chs and plots to make room for as much as possible and like how they reference eps they can't possibly cover. The tavern scene where eps like The Great Divide and The Fortuneteller are referenced feels like a good mix of humorous and a harmless homage, not too fanservicey and out of place so as to not work.
Another commendable effort from a mid season episode and I have to say, at the very very least I'm having fun and am infinitely glad that the show isn't the most offensive thing it could have been, which is bland. Even though the CG doesn't quite cut it sometimes there's still life in this show and there's a respectable attempt at a retelling, despite me still being sceptical as what it will ultimately add up to.
Two more random notes, one is Azula and how they're setting up Ozai manipulating her, which I like, even if that means this isn't quite ATLA Azula. And two, I think what I'm missing from Katara is that feral passion she's known for, and quite frankly the heart, which is her whole thing, so I'm really hoping she'll be allowed her female rage at least when they get to the North. So far, this version of Katara is unfortunately just a little too lukewarm, not the loud and proudly emotional forever girl I dedicated my life to.

Ok but that scene in the live action between Aang and Gyatso when Gyatso tells Aang, "you are my friend. You will always be my friend" actually made me emotional. The additional Gyatso scenes in the series are really, really sweet. The Roku and Aang scene was also kind of cute, and I like the information about Koh and his mother that we get in this scene (cuz I think the spirit that Ursa interacted with in the comic was Koh's mother, and even though I don't think the live action was necessarily giving a nod to that, I still liked the reference to the spirit). Even though I don't think the ATLA live action is perfect, I am liking some bits of the writing here and there. I was nervous about how the series would turn out, but now that I've watched it, I think there's a lot of potential for it to be a good adaptation if we get future seasons.
I do like the inclusion of some of the other spirit/Avatar lore. And yeah, the mother of faces from the Search is Koh's mother and that was an intentional reference. Pity it's a reference to a plotline nobody cares about.
And I loved that scene between Aang and Gyatso! I love that Gyatso does not patronize to Aang or try to be the Adult in the situation, as a lot of adults would, but returns Aang's affirmation of friendship. It's quite a nice contrast with Ozai acting like a dictator over his own children.

Finally finished NATLA. Thoughts:
They ruined Yue's character. Why would a princess be helping casually in the kitchen. Why would a princess display 0 manners around someone she just met. personality completely different.
They had Yue faint repeatedly just to magically sit back up when they needed an exposition dump, then faint again.
They made Hahn a good person? Why is Yue suddenly a waterbender and traipsing around the spirit world? It doesnt add anything and feels out of place.
The interactions between Pakku and Katara were stilted and forced. In the cartoon she had a training period and earned his trust, but here it was just instantly granted that she was the person to report to during battle, yet she doesnt know AQa's defense layout or anything else because she just arrived.
battle pacing in Agna Qel'a is weird. too much standing around talking.
The dialogue is so Marvelized. quip quip quip quip quip.
Aang is joyless and talking like Iron Man. (not the actor's fault.)
Zuko is perfect, 11/10. Every change they made is perfect.
Combining arc beats (e.g. Jet + mechanist) worked surprisingly well.
They made Bumi into an asshole and his dialogue was repetitive, that arc dragged out way too long.
Wasn't atmospheric enough. everything felt like a set.
How did Momo, half the size of a housecat, push that girl out of the way? physics are not mathing.
Why did they take Momo to the spirit oasis to heal but not any of the battle participants or injured civilians. Scene ate too much screen time and sapped urgency from the battle. Makes AQ'a look stupid.
Jet was perfect.
Multiple issues with logic, too long to post. Writing is shallow.
Azula is snarking to her father too much considering she just watched her brother get half his face melted off for one instance of disrespect.
Pecs. 🙏
not enough in-series justification for why Ozai wanted Zuko out of the way in favor of Azula. We know why, but they aren't standing on their own for this beat and have to lean on the cartoon.
Katara and Sokka getting btfo by Koh felt... really strange. they were just there to job and create stakes.
Kuruk and Kyoshi were great inclusions.
Jee/the 41st was a great detail, best part of series.
Azula being the puppetmaster behind Zhao is strange. She knows things by magic I guess, they made a 14 year old girl not just plausibly cunning but straight up omniscient. Logic breaking keikaku doori with her and Ozai.
Ozai using AQ'a as a distraction to take Omashu makes zero logical sense and I don't want to write an essay so just think about this for 5 minutes. I almost screamed.
bf's contribution: "this feels like it was written during the writer's strike."
Visually it was beautiful and the scenery and costumes were great. Other than Yue and Pakku the actors were all fine. Zuko's actor was beyond perfect and his firebending was next level gorgeous.
Sokka's new backstory was a good inclusion. Sokka got a lot of great scenes and the actor is a perfect fit.
Gyatso was also astonishingly perfect. chef's kiss to the actor, his performance was beautiful.
Very much noticing the Kataang scenes were all removed and we got some Zutara allusions. I ship that so yay.
The Sokka/Suki scenes were spicy. However she removed her makeup in 3 seconds flat and that broke my immersion. Please ask a woman next time. otherwise yes I ship that. Just kiss already!
I like the beautiful older lady they put in charge of Kyoshi Island. Nice to see more females in leadership positions.
The lack of the Azula chime is criminal. Her using feminine charm to lure rebels into a trap was a great scene to introduce her. Glad to see rebels, it makes it feel more politically realistic.
The opening scene in ep 1 had Mulan's opening scene vibes in a good way.
Overall: enjoyable with a few caveats but writing quality falls apart upon critical inspection. Much better than I expected, rewatch-worthy. 8/10.

MY ATLA LIVE ACTION S1E5 THOUGHTS
EP4 - EP6
I think I’m progressively getting more confused with how they’re structuring this plot. At what point does an adaptation stop being a necessary rearrangement and starts being changed for the sake of change. I don’t actually have the answer to that, but I’m going to keep that in mind moving forward.
So there’s a lot going on in this episode, with an arc that again spans episodes 5 and 6 (as a guess). It seems the writers are bringing in elements from book 2, which they were doing before, but this time I’m not entirely sure as to why? I’m a little perplexed about it, I guess. Don’t get me wrong, I thought it was a fairly enjoyable watch, but I do think I would sooner rather rewatch the cartoon again before this episode.
There was a character officially introduced this episode that said some things that I feel directly conflicts with their character in the cartoon, and I’m finding it difficult to reconcile why the writers made this change.
Lastly, this was the first time in this series where I immediately noticed a parallel between Zuko and Aang, which was always something that Made the original series for me, so I appreciated its inclusion here.
As always, spoilers and live reactions under the cut.
judging by the description, we’re in the winter solstice proper now.
katara is advancing in a much more believable way now
are they gonna do the misogyny in the northern water tribe thing?
yeah this is def the opening to the winter solstice episode. does that mean we’ll go to the fire temple and meet roku after?
woah that shot with Aang on his knees in the burnt forest was the exact same one in the cartoon
“my name is sokka, rhymes with okka”
PIPPINPADDLEOPSICOPOLIS THE THIRD THAT’S CRAZY!! where was this in omashu
zuko’s being rude to his subordinates <3 love that guy
oh okay so the yuyan archers are being given to zhao. will this tie into pohuai somehow? should i expect to see the blue spirit next episode?
ozai is. talking up zuko?? to deliberately put down azula?? i mean. yeah okay i can accept that. if they’re making ozai turn on azula a little, then that means they might be setting up for an azula redemption arc down the line. i might miss the ultimate tragedy of her character, but tbh she deserves something good. it’ll be interesting to see how this affects zuko’s redemption arc as well
ooh the bear statues are nice. hei bai time
oh they’re. all in the spirit world? from just aang meditating??? that feels like that’s not how that should work, but okay
pirates, canyon guide? the callbacks, huh? we haven’t seen the adaptations for the waterbending scroll or the great divide, so are they implying that some abridged version of these events have happened in this version of canon offscreen? hm
june <33
HELP SHE’S FLIRTING WITH IROH
WAN SHI TONG???? love love love, he looks incredible!! that sure is a big fucking owl. why is he here though
has azula not figured out blue flames completely yet? they were orange, and flickered blue
i am enjoying this early azula arc, if not just because i love azula
they’re gonna adapt the bato episode, right? bc june is here. that might be coming soon, right?
hei bai <33 he looks great too
no bending in the spirit world
wait is this. an adaptation of the hallucinations in the swamp from book 2?? it’s kind of giving swamp. how much do we wanna bet that the three tailed fox was a representation for yue? i’ll bet it was the same actress doing the voice work
well. goodbye kya
face. stealer? koh is that you?
well fuck. no bato episode, sokka’s already been ice-dodging. bato is in this flashback, but at what cost. i guess this does eliminate that aang miscommunication plot point, which i did hate.
sokka. bullied?
this better not be real. hakoda would never say that. he Wouldn’t!! what the fuck. this better be a swamp-esque hallucination. i’m gonna be so mad. hakoda is a supportive figure in sokka’s life, sokka’s insecurities aren’t supposed to stem from the things he says, even if hakoda doesn't think sokka can hear. i would buy it if the village boys were the ones causing sokka issues, but in my opinion, hakoda should be part of the solution, not the problem.
koh the face stealer confirmed. this goes kinda hard
did anyone tell aang about the whole expressionless thing. what’s stopping koh right now
GYATSO????! this is peak gyatso he’s real
maybe. worry about your friends a little more though aang
“imprisons people in their darkest memories” huh. that means. hakoda was really saying that about sokka? hm
you uh. just gonna leave them there?
it’s good that they’re still paralleling aang and zuko. that was very nice, and also a staple of WHY i liked the cartoon in the first place.
liked: wan shi tong's design (he looked cool as hell), koh's design (appropriately scary), the general look of the spirit world, possible (unconfirmed) foreshadowing of yue in a swamp-esque style
worried about: if they keep adapting things from season two and cutting things from season one, what's going to happen in later seasons?
disliked: hakoda's characterization (i know it didn't seem mean-spirited and i know he didn't think sokka was around to hear, but in my heart of hearts he would never say that. why does bato seem to believe in sokka more than hakoda)

WEEK 12 - COMPULSORY QUESTION 2
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This week we were further introduced to the connections between design, social engagement and tradition. Since we were assigned to choose two design practices that relate to the topic of social engagement. My choice was the School of Tomorrow by Kinetic SG.
The School of Tomorrow is a sustainability exhibition for Singapore Design Week 2023, designed for students of all ages. It reinterprets ten familiar subjects to address critical environmental issues like waste, pollution, food, energy, and climate change. The exhibition aims to create an adaptive learning environment that fosters critical thinking and prepares students for a changing world. It emphasizes technology integration, real-world problem solving, and collaboration, making education more engaging and relevant for future challenges.
By being sustainable, the exhibit shows the many different ways waste can be recycled and reused to create something that humans can in turn use everyday. For example plant based bioplastics using soy, paint derived from mango tree leaves and exercise books made out of excess paper left over from print production.
The exhibit educates manages to educate everyone of all ages about global warming and how we can be creative when it comes to building new materials in the future, which in turn is incredibly inclusive. Not only that but it manages to create a circle that resembles a “school” or a form of education.
Visitors enjoy an immersive school experience, each classroom focuses on a specific environmental issue, presenting both the challenges and potential solutions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I chose architect Alejandro Borrego as my second example since he manages to demonstrate design and social engagement with tradition. He is a Spanish architect based in Bali, known for his tropical architecture practice. He designed a clean monolithic slab for the bedrooms using palimanan, a cream-colored sandstone, showcasing a hyper-local and minimalist design approach. This functional simplicity enhances the home’s sustainability by reducing construction scale and utilizing locally sourced materials.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
During Week 10's class, I answered questions regarding my artistic vision. My design strengths are mainly Photography, Publication and Typography. I'm incredibly passionate about the many ways we are able to convey a story or a feeling through images, type or a poster. My main aspiration is to be able to graduate with a Bachelor's degree in RMIT Melbourne and pursue a career as an Art Director.
Tumblr media
The works that really resonated with me were Eng Tow's Eclipse and Goh Beng Kwan's Black Afternoon. The reason why I am incredibly passionate about Art Direction is because I always felt like I can truly be myself, by delving into broader themes and play with symbolism. In essence, art direction is about creating a visual language that communicates the intended message effectively and resonates with the audience.
Eng Tow's exploration of the metaphysical beauty and inexplicable forces and her use of multi disciplinary techniques as well as Goh's use of mixed mediums and sensory impressions have all inspired my design practices.

CTS B | Summative Assessment Prep — Session 2
My initial focus towards a user-centered approach, where functionality, clarity, and accessibility take priority over purely aesthetic appeal.
Tumblr media
My classmates were supportive with my artistic statements...
However, I find that they no longer fully align with my evolving focus on social impact...
Inspired by class discussions on social engagement, I've recognized the need to reframe my artistic statement to challenge my former ideals!
In challenging my current statement, I'm pushing designs that engage the audience on a deeper level, fostering emotions, awareness and promoting positive social action.
This approach mirrors my vision for design as a tool for communication, connection, prioritizing functionality, accessibility, and inclusivity.
French artist JR focuses on connecting people through portraits. Rooted in a commitment to inclusivity, "Inside Out".
Visually represents personal and collective experiences, fostering a deeper understanding of social issues like migration and identity!
Tumblr media
"By adopting elements that enhance understanding and inclusivity, design becomes more impactful, honest, relevant, and engaging!" (Dinesh Rawat)
Inspired by week 1 (Creative Practice and Critical Thinking)
Tumblr media
Creativity enriches the process by expressing complex messages innovatively, using emotions, and symbols.
Even in typography!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Visuals convey personal and collective experiences, making designs resonate with people’s realities. (Vikash Arjan)
Tomás Saraceno creates projects that not only engage audiences on a personal level but also envision sustainability.
Tumblr media
Emphasizing interconnectedness and sustainability, encouraging audiences to consider how we might live harmoniously with the environment.
My vision similarly seeks to create impactful designs that address social needs. Using clear elements to enhance the viewer’s experience meaningfully.
Tumblr media
Inspired by Week 3 (This Is How You Connect Practice with Society), I recognizes that building community is vital for collective action and sustainable change.
Christine Sun Kim, a deaf artist, incorporates her unique perspective into her art, fostering understanding and inclusivity within the community.
Tumblr media
By embedding local narratives and addressing social issues, I aim to create designs that resonate with specific communities.
Like hawkers during the pandemic!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Where I'm moved by Amanda Heng's works. Her campaigns go beyond visuals, speaking directly to people’s hearts and driving real change. (Angeline Koh)
This performance piece, she explores gender roles.
Tumblr media
Reaching directly into people’s lives and prompting real change.
Her approach is purposeful and impactful, the work that stays with you long after you've experienced it.
Tumblr media
Also Jessica Walsh uses design as a tool for communication, fostering awareness, and encouraging meaningful conversations around social issues. (Mary Hemingway)
She addresses the issue of body image and societal pressure regarding appearance.
Tumblr media
I want my designs that connect deeply and make a difference.
Through my experiences volunteering with communities, I have witnessed firsthand challenges individuals faced...
Tumblr media
Each story I've heard has inspired me to use my design skills as a tool for change, I'm passionate about addressing issues such as mental health awareness.
Tumblr media
I aspire to collaborate with more community organizations to develop initiatives that celebrate cultural identities while addressing pressing social issues.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Through these partnerships, I hope to create impactful designs that inspire meaningful dialogue and change.
Reframing my artistic statements, this changes pushes impactful campaigns, engage audiences on a meaningful level, fostering awareness and encouraging positive social action!

Fortnite Chapter 5: Season 2 - Myths and Mortals.
It's another fortnite season alright. Coming off of underground, we were greeted with mysterious teasers for the battle pass characters. I thought this was Hope again, lol. Hype at this point was HUGE. Everyone was ready to move on from Underground and people were excited to see what epic was cooking.
Tumblr media
After properly being revealed, launch day came. Now to this day we don't have the story, but something BAD happened on Epic's side. All of the programmers and engineers were working for hours on end, trying to get the servers up. The servers wouldn't come up until the evening.
Regardless, the season dropped. This one is obviously themed around Greek mythology. Artemis, Aphrodite, Medusa, Cerberus, Hades, Poseidon and Zeus all make an appearance in the battle pass. We’ve seen interpretations of these figures hundreds of times throughout the years, but the idea of Fortnite of all games taking it on is quite the interesting thing to think about. You think anybody’s thought “what do you think fortnite Zeus looks like?”
The story is still there. Zeus wants to wipe out all of humanity and the other gods think he's doing too much. The looper and Hope work with the other gods to get him to cut it out. Speaking of. Hope. For the entirety of chapter 4, characters were introduced and quickly discarded as the next season came. Strangely, that did not happen with Hope and her in specific. This season is the point where everyone learned that epic is finally doing something with their characters, starting with her. Genuine shock seeing her appear in the season's CG.
Tumblr media
The way these lot are characterized is actually pretty fun. Cerberus is still Hades’s brutal and loyal guard dog, but he has a very playful side to him. Like a... dog. Hades is actually pretty chill. References to what Aphrodite is more known for are replaced with a family friendly “god of the squad”. She also has a phone she likes to take selfies with a lot. It's a pretty funny take on her.
Tumblr media
Also, epic for some reason made short really well made animations of some of the BP skins. They were released on a week by week basis, and nobody knows why they made them, but it was appreciated. The season was teased the day before with this awesome trailer that EXPLODED online.
Also, Korra is here! This one was a genuine surprise. I remember my jaw dropping when i saw her on the BP trailer for the first time. I'm a huge fan of TLOK. I've rewatched it in it's entirety 7 times now. One thing i really liked about her inclusion was the fact that they brought back Irene Koh specifically to do the art for both of her loading screens. There are fans in that studio.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She brought along the series's staple bending abilities, alongside a good chunk of the Gaang. As weird as it was to see Aang of all people with a shotgun, i got used to it quickly. Shame that Sokka missed out on the fun. Maybe he'll bring Suki along next time.
Each bending ability was designed as to how they are written and viewed in the show. With waterbending, you could fire off icicles and heal yourself in water, firebending was purely fast & offensive, and earth bending could be used to both defend yourself, and fire off a slow but powerful attack. Airbending couldn't be used to harm anyone. it was purely used for mobility.
Tumblr media
Speaking of mobility, we’ve dropped the grapple blades and we’ve moved onto the wings of icarus. It’s an item that allows you to straight up fly. It was cool for like the first day, but then I stopped using it after I got shot down from the sky. Turns out your hitbox is doubled if not tripled using it. A week into the season, it was considered a suicide button. A throwing item. the chains of hades also appeared. It was a brutal melee item.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is the first Fortnite season that i wasn't too crazy about. I wasn't too big on the theme, or any of the battle pass skins. But i still think they did a good job. I'm looking forwards to what comes next.

Note
Oooh, I have a question I need help with.
For people in North America, Mexico is the cheap vacation destination since it's relatively close (less expensive flights I guess?) and all-inclusive resorts mean that the full cost is known in advance.
Where would French people go for a similar type of vacation?
(Asking in the context of what a production company might choose for a reality tv show. Asking on anon because it relates to my big bang fic.)
French people like to go on vacation especially during the summer! One of the main destination is... France, mostly in the South where french people can enjoy the sun. We see a lot of tourism between regions and people like to go camping, or stay in a hotel. Corsica is also a very popular touristic destination. France itself is a touristic destination for other countries, mainly Paris because of its many attractions.
Apart from France, we mostly go to the closest European countries, since staying in the EU makes travelling easier (mostly because we can go by car and the currency is the same). Spain, Italy and Portugal are the main choices because it's sunny, the beach is nearby and the cost of living is not that expensive. But we also go to other close countries such as Belgium, Germany or the UK.
Regarding reality TV shows, it mostly depends on the type of show you're looking for. Popular TV shows such as Les Marseillais, Les Anges or Les Ch'tis like to show idyllic destinations : Ibiza, Dubai, Rio and Miami come to mind. The goal is to put all the participants in the same villa in famous places around the world, changing every season. But if the production doesn't have the budget, they'll likely choose cheaper destinations, as long as it feels like a holiday trip : Spanish islands would be great. Now some different types of shows choose different destinations. For example Koh Lanta (adapted from another show, Survivor) first took place in Thailand, then in various places around the world. Since the goal is to survive in the wild of an island, the landscapes are very different from an usual reality TV show.
It really depends on the type of show you're looking for!

The Heroes, Future Season Picking
maxw@jcogginsa @skjam, @maxwell-grant
As it would appear discussion of Season One has come to a halt for the moment, this thread is for discussing Season Two.
Some ideas proposed thus far...
By @jcogginsa:
As I said previously , my idea for this one was to have the principal characters come together for Keane’s funeral before getting sucked into the season’s plot. To expand on that, what I think should happen here is that Keane was familiar with several other great detectives. After they leave his funeral, they get sucked into what looks like an Agatha Christie style whodunnit, which is eventually revealed to be something of a more supernatural flavor. The big name of this season could be an aged Sherlock Holmes, but if we don’t go with that, Watson would be a fun pick.
- General Zaroff, the antagonist of ‘The Most Dangerous Game’ sinks a cruise ship, which he believes Doc Savage is aboard, believing that Savage will survive and make it to Zaroff’s island, where he can hunt him for sport. Unfortunately, he’s misinformed, because the Savage aboard the ship is actually Patricia Savage, not Clark. She, along with other pulp heroes who were aboard, then have to deal with Zaroff. Possibly with the Wolfman and Tarzan involved
- The aforementioned “The Shadow vs Lovecraft” season. This would be a later season, since I think it’d be good if Fu Manchu had a more sizeable role in it, to show that while he’s a bad man, he’s not a “wants to end the world” kind of Bad man. Additionally, as a late act twist, I think it’d be nice for a Golden Age flavor of Superman to show up, as he is thematically a foil to Lovecraft
- While most of the seasons would be stand alone, I did have an idea for a loosely connected Trilogy of seasons featuring Sun Koh, the Nazi Doc Savage. One Season would deal with a search for Atlantis, and end with Sun Koh arriving in the present day. Then the season after that would featuring Conan battling Sun Koh in the distant past, and then the season after that would see Sun Koh suffering his final defeat at the hands of Doc Savage.
- A season set on Mars, featuring John Carter attempt to stop the Martian Invasion from War of the Worlds from getting launched
By @krinsbez:
-News of the Underworld: Belgian boy reporter Tintin is back in New York City, doing a ride-along with Justice, Inc. when they’re called in to investigate a gang that’s been robbing museums. But then their leader becomes convinced that one of the artifacts is posssesed by a demon and is talking to him (I think it should be ambiguous if he’s delusional or not), and begins planning something more grandiose than mere thefts, the Avenger calls upon…not sure. Someone with knowledge of mysticism and the occult, but not so much that no ambiguity exists.
-Skull and Crosswinds: In the midst of WWI, the 20th Phantom discovers that Robur the Conqueror’s ahead-of-his time flight technology has fallen into the hands of the European branch of the Singh Brotherhood, who plan to use the war as cover to plunder the continent from the skies with impunity. To stop them, he must somehow convince G-8 and Hans Von Hammer to work together.
-Black As Night And Red All Over: In ‘70s NYC, Shaft, Blade, and Vampirella join forces to defeat Blacula. Given the pun of the title, I thought about throwing in Kolchak, but A: I don’t know that much about him ATM, and B: What little I do know suggests he lives elsewhere?
Comments by @maxwell-grant:
Funny you mentioned wanting to bring Superman into the “Shadow vs Lovecraft” season, because I’ve been tinkering with my own Shadow - Superman crossover idea for a while now, that whole text I wrote about crossing The Shadow with Lovecraft spawned out a Shadow meets Superman text I haven’t finished yet.
The inclusion of Fu Manchu though? I’ll definitely keep it in mind. Although The Shadow, Fu Manchu, and the Cthulhu Mythos are such massive properties, such quintessential pillars of pulp fiction as well as fiction in general, that Superman’s inclusion might be either too much, or perhaps the right ingredient to pulling it all together. Definitely something I have a lot of ideas for but maybe better saved for later.
“The Most Dangerous Game” starring pulp heroes definitely sounds fun though. I think one of the things I most enjoyed about these posts is that they got me to think and write about characters I’d never given much thought prior. I’d definitely like to do more with further obscure choices.
@krinsbez
Here’s an idea for that Tintin x Justice Inc crossover. When The Avenger and Tintin investigate museum robbers who run afoul a mystical artifact that might be driving them to more sinister plans, they need someone who’s familiar enough with the occult and also with historical artifacts, and so they call…Indiana Jones. Benson would have preferred calling someone else but they are in a hurry and Jones was easy to reach. Indy wants absolutely nothing to do with the dead-faced creep who names his knives and the little kid running around in a trenchcoat and demonic artifacts and whatnot, but then he gets involved and goes along complaining about being dragged into another supernatural bullshit adventure, as usual.
Comments by @skjam:
The really obvious proto-Superman for pulp stories is Hugo Danner from “Gladiator” by Philip Wylie.  He dies at the end of the book, but this can easily be handwaved; perhaps a Snake Plissken-like “I heard you were dead” from everyone who recognizes him?
“Most Dangerous Game” with Pat Savage?  If you want to make things really tough for Zaroff, team her up with Jane Clayton, Lady Greystoke.  By the third Tarzan book, Jane’s the second-best person in the world at jungle survival.  (She drops back to third once their son reaches his teens.)
Additional comments by @jcogginsa:
Been thinking more about the great detective pitch I made, and I think good characters to use for that season would be Sar Dubnotai (who I only know of because of Maxwell Grant’s Pulp tarot), and Inspector Ginko from Diabolik
Additional comments by @maxwell-grant:
@skjam I think Hugo Danner is an interesting enough character that, while I do have some plans for him, I wouldn’t just use him as a Superman analogue.
@jcogginsa Sar is definitely a great choice, in fact it’s a logical choice to have him enter the scene as a response to Ascott Keane’s murder, since Sar is an occult detective as well, far older, more powerful and resourceful than Keane, and generally being a far more interesting character too.
I haven’t yet had a chance to read the original Sar Dubnotal stories but something I really enjoyed about the Tales of the Shadowmen stories I’ve read with him is that they emphasize him being a psychologist on top of everything else, so he lends himself into scenarios where he uses his magic to help characters dig into their pasts and deal with their trauma and so on, which is definitely something that sets him apart from other pulp heroes, even those with mystical powers.
The fact that he can speak with the dead could also allow us to include characters from different time periods. For example, maybe Holmes did die a while before the story began, but Sar has been receiving visions and guidance from Holmes in the afterlife that sets him on a trip to America where he has to help some of his detective friends deal with the aftermath of the murder of an American occult detective. That way, not every character we want to include outside of their time period needs to be immortal (although Sar may be, as even in his original 1910 stories he was hinted at being much older than he appeared, and now he’s going to be appearing in the 1930s presumably unchanged).
Sar can very well serve as the link that binds different characters and storytelling elements together.
Some thoughts of my own.
-On Hugo Danner: I have to agree with @maxwell-grant that just using him as a Superman analogue is not a good idea, not least because, asides from powers they are very different characters. Not sure using Superman is the best idea either, since he’s as close as you get to a bright shining line where Pulp Heroes stop and Super Heroes begin (given that there are plenty of superheroes who are 100% Pulp Heroes as far as I’m concerned, it’s not much of a line, but still)
-On what to do next: Obviously, I’m partial to my own ideas, but of @jcogginsa‘s ideas, I like the Detectives or Most Dangerous game one’s best. Which sentiment appears to be shared by the rest of you, so let’s go for it.
-On Detectives: Unfortunately, I’ve never even heard of Sar before, so I’m not confident of my ability to do stuff with him.
-On Most Dangerous Game: I love the concept, but I can’t buy Gen. Zaroff by himself as being a legitimate threat when Tarzan is involved? (as far as I’m concerned. kidnapping Jane is a form of suicide)

Diamonds Are the World’s Best Friend: The Important Roles Diamonds Play in Society
by Shelby Wyzykowski
In the classic 1953 movie “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” is a memorable musical number performed by silver screen legend Marilyn Monroe. Wearing a striking pink satin gown and dripping in dazzling jewels, she is surrounded on the stage by a bevy of handsome suitors that are dressed to the nines. In this glamorous setting, she sings the praises of diamonds…how nothing in the world can compare to how it feels to possess these glittering gemstones. But off-screen, Monroe’s taste in brilliant baubles was radically different, preferring costume jewelry to the real thing. I have to admit that I agree with Marilyn. Diamonds have never held much interest for me. That is until now. After doing a little research, I’ve discovered that, besides their use in the jewelry industry, there are other ways in which diamonds are utilized in society today. In fact, there is so much more to these captivating stones than just their scintillating sparkle.
Perhaps you’ve heard the adage “one person’s trash is another person’s treasure.” Well, it just might surprise you that this saying holds true for diamonds. In the jewelry world, a diamond with perfect clarity is the much-desired ideal. But in the scientific world, a so-called “poor” specimen that is full of inclusions (imperfections), could hold a treasure trove of geologic information. Researchers are studying them to try and uncover the secrets of the deep-Earth environment. The majority of diamonds are created fairly close to the Earth’s surface, between 93 and 150 miles down. But there are some diamonds, called super-deep diamonds, that come from far down in the Earth’s mantle and are as deep as 500 to 600 miles (the mantle, which is mostly made up of solid and very hot rock, is directly below the Earth’s surface layer, or crust, and makes up more than 80 percent of our planet’s volume). These 3.5 billion-year-old gems formed at a pressure that is 240,000 times the atmospheric pressure at sea level, and this fact makes these tiny stone time capsules extremely valuable to researchers. No doubt geologists would love to travel deep under our planet’s surface like the characters in Jules Verne’s 1864 science fiction novel Journey to the Center of the Earth. Unfortunately they can’t, but these super-deep diamonds are the next best thing to journeying there themselves!
With these diamonds, scientists are uncovering clues to the origins of water on Earth. Did water come from incoming asteroids and comets, or was water an integral component at the planet’s formation? We’re still not quite sure. But diamond research has brought us closer to figuring out how much water lies deep underground. Scientists think that there may in fact be as much water present in our planet’s deep subsurface as there is found in our oceans. They have developed this idea after discovering a special water encased in the inclusions of deep diamonds. Called ICE-VII, this water ice can only be formed under tremendous deep-Earth pressure. In addition to water, geologists have found an elusive mineral in diamond inclusions. Scientists had theorized it to be an extremely common mineral that makes up to 38 percent of the Earth’s volume, but it’s been impossible to create in a lab. Now that it’s been found in nature, researchers have the proof of its existence and have named it Silicate-Perovskite (or Bridgmanite). In addition to Bridgmanite, they have discovered other trace minerals and elements that are commonly present in the Earth’s crust. This means that the materials were subducted (drawn back down into the Earth) billions of years ago by plate tectonics. Deep in the mantle, the materials were encased in a forming deep-diamond and then eventually sent back up to the surface by way of volcanic eruptions. Even more exciting than all of these discoveries is the thought of what geologists still have yet to uncover. They still hope to find carbon from primordial organic matter in these special diamonds. That matter could be a clue to the origins of life on Earth!

In addition to their contributions to the scientific field, diamonds also have practical uses in society. In the mid-1950’s, synthetic diamonds were invented. Created in a lab, they are chemically and physically exactly the same as natural diamonds. However, these man-made gems do not possess the allure and mystery of natural diamonds, so they are not very desirable in the jewelry market. But since diamonds are the hardest known natural substance, they are ideal for industrial use. For example, they can be pulverized into a fine abrasive that can be made into a “diamond paste” and used for polishing other jewelry-grade gemstones. Small particles of diamond can also be embedded in tools like saw blades, drill bits, and grinding wheels. These diamond-coated tools are very wear-resistant and can be used for mining, deep-sea drilling, and road construction. And there are some ingenious uses for diamonds that you may find to be very surprising. Diamond windows can be made from very thin (thinner than a human hair) diamond membranes. These windows cover X-ray machines, laser openings, and vacuum chambers. A diamond can also make your music sound better. A speaker dome made out of diamonds can vibrate very rapidly because this gem is such a stiff material. So it is ideal for enhancing the performance of high-quality speakers. Diamonds can even help you keep track of time. Small mechanical devices, such as watches, have tiny bearings inside of them that make everything move (in a watch, it’s called its “movement”). A thin coating of diamond makes these parts wear-resistant and ensures accurate time-telling and lasting durability. From helping to build highways to making your timepiece tick, who knew that diamonds could be so useful in so many ways!

Yet another important role that diamonds have played in our world is how they have influenced history. The brilliantly blue, supposedly cursed Hope Diamond, for example, has not brought much luck to its owners since it was discovered over 350 years ago. It was in the possession of Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI until their untimely deaths during the French Revolution. Subsequent owners also met with unfortunate outcomes until it was donated to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History where it is now safely on display. Another famous diamond, the 750 year-old Koh-i-Noor, has been owned by many royal rulers. It once decorated the Peacock Throne that was used by the Mughal Emperors of India, including Shah Juhan, the builder of the Taj Mahal. Now in England, the stone is part of the Imperial Crown. Due to an alleged curse, it can only ever be worn by the royal family’s female members. Finally, there is the Regent Diamond, which was unearthed in the early 1700’s. After being owned by several rulers, it disappeared during the French Revolution. Years later, it reappeared in the sword of Napoleon. But he was unable to hold onto it for long. After being defeated by the British in the Battle of Waterloo, the once-great ruler was exiled to the tiny island of Elba in disgrace. Since 1987, the Regent’s home has been at the French Royal Treasury in the Louvre in Paris. But you don’t need to travel to France or Great Britain or Washington D.C. to see the Regent Diamond, the Koh-i-Noor, and the Hope Diamond. Replicas of these three stones plus many more world-famous diamond replicas are on display at the Hillman Hall of Minerals and Gems. While you’re there, you can also admire some expertly crafted pieces of authentic diamond jewelry that would make any gem lover’s heart skip a beat.
Even though Hillman’s diamond collection is truly amazing, I can’t help but wonder if it would have impressed someone like Marilyn Monroe. Apart from a single piece of jewelry, the diamond wedding band that was given to her by Joe DiMaggio, she had no real affinity for diamonds. Apparently, the legendary actress didn’t believe that they’re a girl’s best friend. But if she had been given the opportunity to find out about all of the other meaningful ways in which diamonds benefit our world, perhaps this screen siren might have developed a new appreciation for these precious gems. I know that I have. I’d like to think that Marilyn would have too.

Bewitching Monsters - Notes and Pronunciations
BeMo Masterlist
Everything is below the break because long post
● I wanted to address the fact that the main character (MC) of this story is mostly nondescript. While initially, I wanted to do this so more people could (if they wished) insert themselves into MC's shoes, I've come to understand that this choice can make her assumed-white. In my mind, I don't see MC as white, but I know simply stating that outside the story doesn't mean much. I also realize that certain descriptions I might have used lead to a white/lighter skin characterization — like descriptions of MC blushing. Now that the story is finished, I’d like to go back and edit any such descriptions to be more inclusive, but idk when I'll have the energy to said editing. There are other things I'd like to edit (like the werewolf arc), because I don't feel they ended up coming out as well as I intended, but that's another topic.
● I also wanted to clarify that MC isn't necessarily cis or afab. While she is femme presenting, uses she/her pronouns, and I label pairings as "f/__", I don't mean to make her explicitly read as cis/afab. This is a world of magic; so much is possible. Again, I have my own ideas about her, but wanted to leave such details ambiguous for similar reasons as to why I didn't describe her skin tone. And again, this might not have been the best call on my part.
● I am not an expert on kink and bdsm, but unlike other authors (*cough* 50shades *cough*), I DO have some first hand experiences, and also do research before writing things I don't know of well. That said, I still might not write certain bdsm/kink things well; and at times I might play up certain tropes because this is a fun, non-serious, smutty, fantasy series. None of the things I write are meant to be instructional; don't take what I write as perfect examples to replicate. Please do your own research before engaging in bdsm/kink.

How Korrasami highlighted discrimination in fandom spaces
Six years on and you want to write about TLOK ending backlash and realise that many of the issues pointed out then are still relevant today and people privileged enough to ignore them, make memes of people and seemingly ‘chase’ them off in some sort of digital pogrom think they have ‘won’ when in actually they manifested the socio-cultural marginalisation of many groups on the net namely POC and LGBTQIA+ people who seemed to have ‘betrayed’ something for not supporting Bryke’s visions.  I noticed most people who criticised Korrasami and got the brunt of hate, like myself, were non-White, mostly non-US and marginalised people who happened to either be in the queer spectrum or not but definitely a marginalised or minority group online. The calls of homophobia are actually cries of wolf as many of the people critiquing Korrasami are gay. They just didn’t happen to be ‘gay enough’ or ‘White enough.’ No one stated Korrasami was morally or inherently bad but even now I talked to someone and they went that in the first two books Korra and Asami were merely friends and their lives centred around Mako. I always found this to be an issue. That Mako was their reference point. Even by B3 it seemed breaking up from Mako helped them become friends. It always assumed Korra and Asami can’t be friends.  A poor attempt of reconciliation was made in Turf Wars when Korra says in the race car she felt bonded with Asami. I found it silly that this was brought up now after so many canonical years after the fact they were close and had an understanding at the moment SANS MAKO. The comics keep on putting Asami as a damsel and Korra’s ability gauged on how successfully she can save her girlfriend. Or scenes that are at times sexualised in the most awkward scenarios without a very good transition. None of this means KA has issues it means it has issues with how canon seems to lack the impetus needed to write it. Even Irene Koh openly has issues with the writing at times. Bryke should hire people who know how to write this relationship.  https://adanewmedia.org/2015/04/issue7-mcmillancottom/
As this linked article expertly shows we POCs are told we cannot write or use academic knowledge or even critique something: we may err and our errors are always magnified in contrast to the blatant hate and havoc of others. . That we are biased and that our lived experiences and knowledges has no place in the world. That our world view is somewhat ‘inferior.’ This was NEVER really about ship wars. It was about a majority who are racist enough to believe we ‘failed’ to ‘assimilate’ so we should be ‘punished.’ When fandom becomes tools for some neo-colonist tools you know you need to be aware and that you must work to make spaces actually safe and inclusive.

something to consider if you're intentions to be inclusive as possible are sincere perime-peach(.)tumblr(.)com/post/187385648393/a-lot-of-fic-writers-try-to-keep-self
Hi, I read your post. I understand when it comes to hair because I have curly hair as well so if someone ran their fingers though it it’d be a mess. I normally try to say “touches a lock of your hair” instead of ran your fingers though. Also when it comes to blushing, I try to use “You felt yourself heating up.” Because even if you’re not blushing when you feel a certain way you heat up and sometimes in your face whether you can see it or not. I try my hardest and try to leave our eye color, hair type, height, when describing a character because I understand that everyone who is reading my work is different. I also use warnings like for koh!tom there will be talk of religion and I don’t want people to be offended when I say ‘god’ or describe heaven a way they don’t think it is or described Hell a way they don’t think it is. I try my hardest to Appel to everyone and make everyone happy. If you would like to add on or give advice I’d be more than happy to hear it.
