Odysseus and Athena’s relationship is one of the most heartbreaking things in Epic and the Wisdom Saga literally almost made me cry.
Athena’s known him since he was a boy, she trained him and watched him grow up into a man who got married and had a child before unwillingly being sent off to war. She held Telemachus when he was a newborn because Odysseus trusted and loved her enough to not even consider the fact she would cause his son harm.
And even when she and Odysseus separated and she left him to his fate, her regrets kept her up at night. She’s probably been watching over Telemachus and Penelope for a long time, trying to make the family he fought so hard to reach was still there when he finally made it back to Ithaca.
Despite everything, she called him a friend and when Odysseus finally broke, she was the one he called out to for help.
Athena and Odysseus’s friendship, guys.

They make me crazy. So crazy.

okay so time to make the wisdom saga a lil sadder BC I FUCKING CAN.
in legendary lets have a little flashbacks of ody in warrior of the mind eg. in the animatic where hes walking while singing "GIVE ME SIRENS AND A CYLOPS" with argos we can have lil flash of young ody walking with athena! (its wholesome but sad)
In lil wolf "wanna entertain me?" could be a lil foreshadowin too "enlighten me king of ithaca" sorta type way also telemachus as a little wolf used to be ody b4 monster and it shows that not only ody lost his whole lil wolf greetin the world with open arms type but hes not a wolf anymore. hes a corrupted hes a whole ass corruption.
In we'd be fine, telemachus might know that athenas talkin abt ody but doesnt wanna ruin her mood bc HES SUCH A SILLY KIND GUY!!
In the ending of Love in paradise (where ody gets emo alpa flashbacks of his homies and his momma), what if we add a faint "i can take the suffering from you.." from penny, and the reason why its faint its becuase his objective is slowly.. fading away...
and i got nothing for god games HAH

odysseus is a better person than me...
because if the person/woman/goddess who had me trapped & under her control for 7 years, and was forcing onto me a one-sided relationship (even though she knew from day 1, that i had a wife called penelope, who i cried for every day at the beach for those 7 years)
was then crying about being "not sorry for loving you" and trying to justify her actions in keeping me prisoner (you can't convince me she wasn't)
my response to my LIE (she asked him to lie don't forget) saying "i love you" and her responding "you do?"
it certainly wouldn't be "but not in the way you want me to"
it would be "HADES NO, YOU DERANGED ASS MANIPULATIVE HARPY"
before swiftly grabbing my stuff, jumping onto my raft and sailing away as quick as i can (while totally not giving her the ancient greek equivalent of a middle finger)
but that's just me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

''Odysseus cheated on his wife'' My first reaction is: you don't know how to differentiate sex from rape and it's disgusting.

calypso's "ody, get away from the ledge" , "ill stay inside your heart" and "stay in my open arms" paralleling eurylochus, ody's mom and polites respectively
then it starts playing REPRISES OF THEIR MAIN SONGS.

anyways chat if Caleo is pedophelia despite the fact that Calypso has the mind+body of a teenager, and that time works differently on Ogygia shouldn't you hate Solangelo for the same reason? Nico didn't die. he's chronologically like 93 or something! but what's the solangelo fans reasoning? "he has the mind and body of a teenager, and time works differently in the lotus casino!" tl;dr some of you are hypocrites

When I first listened to ‘Not Sorry For Loving You’ (the unfinished version on YouTube a few weeks ago), I saw people commenting that Calypso was dumb (and other such rude things) because Odysseus told her he was married and wouldn’t love her. She was told up front and still didn’t understand why he wouldn’t love her.
And yea, he did tell her. It’s not his fault she didn’t believe him. She really should have listened.
But I don’t think she was necessarily dumb, or that it was all her fault either.
From what she says in the song, she was abandoned on that island when she was a young child (I know that’s not exactly accurate to Greek myths, but it’s her backstory here so it’s what I’m going with). And no one can arrive at, or leave her island unless a god intervenes. She’s been alone on that island for a hundred years since she was a kid.
Can you imagine growing up in insolation for a hundred years without a single person to speak to or touch? She probably doesn’t even have solid memories of other people by this point. It makes sense that the first human she’s seen in a century, the first person she’s talked to, the first person that’s broken the cursed solitude that was driving her insane—of course she loved him. Why wouldn’t she?
I for one, cannot blame her for having terrible social skills, no comprehension of boundaries, or a full concept of what no means. I’m frankly surprised she even knows what love is (if she even does at all?? It’s debatable if she loves him romantically or not). Of course she wouldn’t understand when he said no.
Anyway, all I’m saying is, it wasn’t either of their faults.
If you want to blame someone blame Zues for sticking both of them there and being the world’s largest ass.

I am once again thinking about how odysseus who witnessed the horrors that the captured women went through (one of his main duties in the iliad was taking the women back home and making sure they were as comfortable as possible and safe because he was the only one trusted not to violate them further due to his devotion to penelope. And in the odyssey part of the reason circe sent him to the underworld was so that he'd have to listen to all these women's stories (before he could talk to the prophet) ). Who was one of the few that saw women as people and respected their space and opinions. And was then put in those exact same situations. I don't have the motivation right now to do a full literary analysis of this (I'll site the sources too) but oh man one day I'm going to write a full essay on this.
#The odyssey#iliad#Odysseus#Tw: rape#Tw: sex slaves#Tw: camp slaves#Tw: That one time Calypso kept odysseus as a sex slave for 7 years#circe#Something about the inherent trauma of witnessing how your friends treat women#Watching them keep sex slaves#Then having to bring these girls home hearing about their stories seeing the aftermath#Then living in a situation where you have to let a powerful witch use you as she pleases half in payment for lives/food/medicine#Half because she has the equivalent of a gun to your best friends head and if you don't keep her happy then youre all dead#And then that witch sends you on a quest to the underworld where granted you'll benefit too but first#You have to listen to every single captured women from the Trojan war that you didn't Shepard home tell you their stories#Tell you that you're a horrible person while you are living in a disturbingly similar situation#And then later finding yourself trapped as a sex slave for seven years to an immortal nymph#And then being labeled as a horrible cheater for the rest of history#And none of this well historically everybody cheated or it's up to interpretation bullshit#Because it fucking isn't and granted a lot of abridged versions skip this shit#But if you read the full original stories and still think odysseus cheated then you just have an issue with men being victims#Or weren't paying attention i guess#Where's that meme where's it like the text was up to interpretation cut to the text where it very bluntly states what's happening#And I'm not saying odysseus was a good person or that he didn't have slaves because he did. And he wasnt#But first off nobody deserves to suffer that violation#Second they weren't sex slaves they were all nurses/maids/spys and I'm not getting into the ancient culture slavery issues rn#Third there's a lot you can pick to hate odysseus for but cheating/disrespecting women wasn't one of them#They literally invented a new word to describe his and penelopes love and it means to be so in love that you think the exact same way#Also forcing this narrative of odysseus cheating and penelope leaving to be a single girl boss is#Just the fake feminist mindset that stay at home moms are weak and wrong and live awful lives

Wait...now that i think about it....
You remember that Jorge Said that the Gods/Godesses can bring the voices of mortals if they please? Like Athena did in My Goodbye with the voices of the members of the crew that died bc of the Cyclops?
What if Calypso actually bring the voices of Polites, Eurylochus and Anticlea to prevent Odysseus from jumping the legde? But only trigger all of His traumas TOGHETHER.
I'm not fine guys....

idk how you guys are sympathising with calypso after that shit, it was truly just a whole load of manipulation and i wasn’t buying a single word
“i gUeSs mY LoVe WAs jUsT ToO mUch foR YoU” you were obsessed because you had no human connection. this was not love. you treated ody like an object. you ignored him when he told you he was married and in love with someone else. it’s not his fault you deluded yourself into thinking you could’ve had something - the whole song was so backhanded, that bitch has an insane victim complex
odysseus doesn’t owe her jackshit, and he’s better than me cuz he still told her he loved her, just not in a romantic way.

I think the twins had the potential to be the best borderlands antagonists if they were handled properly. Like if gearbox pulled more from reality it could have been a really interesting concept about parasocial relationships, the dangers of blurring the lines between online and reality, and how idolization can turn someone into a faux god

i am sooo setting myself up for hate with this but like...damn! y'all really hate epic calypso and i...really don't? i don't know if it's lack of background knowledge on one (or both) of our parts or just knowledge of different versions of the myth/character or different interpretations of love in paradise/not sorry for loving you but like...
calypso hurts odysseus. but not maliciously? he's a victim, and so is she.
i think possibly the lyric "under my spell we're stuck" is making people think she's the one keeping them on the island? she's not. she's a prisoner, too. hopefully the next saga makes that clearer? i think from the clips we've got of not sorry it might.
i don't think she's using the words of his dead friends to mock or trigger or harm him or even to try to manipulate him. it's possible she doesn't even realize what she's saying - how would she know the origins of those phrases? If she's hearing them as he talks in his sleep, even odds they sound like affirmations. they sound positive - i'll stay in your heart! greet the world with open arms! in the best possibility, she's trying to comfort him.
that is of course an optimistic view. call me polites, i guess. but even as she is hurting odysseus - and she is, i don't deny that! - i can't see it as because she's another example of an evil god. i think for better or worse - she doesn't know any better. it doesn't excuse her violations of boundaries, but she has a childlike, self-centered perspective because for so long she HAS just been herself. the world DOES revolve around her. it doesn't make it right. but it doesn't make her a villain.
i've already seen people complaining about how she refuses to apologize in not sorry for loving you. but she does. she apologizes for everything (say too little too late, fine, but she does) EXCEPT loving him. and her love has never been the thing causing harm. her actions have. she shouldn't apologize for loving him.
also also - within epic canon, as of what we know now, i don't think those aforementioned actions include sexual assault. there are differences between epic and the odyssey. that has been made abundantly clear. and other incidents of violence and sexual assault within epic are clearly articulated. if these aren't, i don't think we can assume they're there.
epic calypso isn't odyssey calypso. or pjo calypso. or any other calypso except: epic calypso.
