80s sci fi novel vibe strong: Cyberpunk: Edgerunners
80-90s fantasy novel straight up: Arcane season 1
#these come closest to matching the energy of imagining a book in your head#to me the imagining part is a lot less cartoony#but when looking at a visual medium its cool to watch#i noticed these actually flesh out side characters in ‘normal’ ways#not like… the odd usual anime shonen shoujo or running tv show way#i guess those are more centered around keeping viewers rather than packaging a whole story#so they end up defaulting to character baiting like choosing a video game fighter#i think this distracts from the fact a dtructure makes the story and the characters#its not like visible but its the actual reason someone would like or not like a character#unless its a really different kind of story. but iunno.
