So, I own three copies of A Christmas Carol. A couple of weeks ago I only had two - my pretty hardback one and the one in the Wordsworth collection of Dickens' Christmas books - but then I was in my local second-hand bookshop and I spotted the Penguin edition of collected Christmas writings by Dickens, which I had perused online already. I took a picture of the contents page, went home, cross checked whether there was anything in it that I didn't already have in other editions, found that there were a couple of tiny pieces that I didn't, then I went back the next day and bought it.

I felt a little silly for this, but now it's the edition I'm using to read along with A Dickens December (it was the copy closest to hand) and I'm really pleased I bought it because it's got lots of notes along with the text.

Some of my favourites so far include the fact that Dickens' original draft went on for several sentences about how much of a stupid 'poser' Hamlet is; that the bit about driving a coach in the stairwell was referencing a speech by a particular politician; and that Marley not having bowels is a pun on literal bowels, the belief that emotions were located in the bowels, and the 'biblically derived' bowels meaning of mercy or tenderness.

I swear to god one of these days were going to see a video of Amaury Guichon and he's going to be making some wings and they are going to look dope as hell, the detail of each feather will be breathtaking, he'll spray paint them to perfection, but as the video goes on, he's not building any sort of winged creature, just the wings. And then there's a human-sized harness (also made of chocolate, somehow, he can do it). And he's attaching the wings to the harness. And he's putting the harness on and he demonstrates how he can flap the wings. And then he'll be off. Out the window and up and up and up. And we'll be looking at the livestream (it's a livestream now) and we'll scream "No, Amaury, the sun! It's going to melt the wings!". But he knows this already. And he is free.

that article going around abt firefox's new ad program is annoying bc it's phrased as though "mozilla has finally TURNED on its people and is SELLING YOU OUT for cold hard cash!!" when. that's not what's happening. it is specifically being implemented to discourage tracking behavior, and literally all the data they are giving to advertisers is aggregate and anonymized, which is like, the opposite of what that post wants you to worry about, lol

they’re calling it block party 2024. just blocking and ignoring countless celebrities who havent said shit about palestine. influencers, actors, anyone who went to the met gala, whatever, they’re getting blocked. and people keep talking about how cathartic it is, how good it feels, how they never realized they could DO that. there was some kind of subconscious law against blocking famous people, but it’s broken, and people are LOVING it. and it’s WORKING. a social media/digital advertising coordinator was talking about how ad companies are PANICKING, because they can’t accurately target anymore. so many big influencers, including fucking LIZZO started talking about palestine the MOMENT their follower counts started going down. and the best part? no one is forgiving them. lizzo posted a tiktok asking people to donate to palestinian families, and all the comments just said you’re a multimillionaire. put your money where your mouth is. blocked.

i feel like i’m witnessing the downfall of celebrity culture, right here right now. people are waking up.
