Edelgard deserves this win. Because not only do people that hate her treat her like shit, people who claim to love her also treat her like shit. I’ve seen so many posts and fics that completely woobify her by removing her agency. She works with an evil group -> she was forced to. She starts a war -> it was a “defensive invasion”. This is unfortunately a side effect of the “I like this character therefore they are always good and anything bad is not their fault” mentality.

One popular Edelgard fic that I’ve seen described as “required reading for understanding Edelgard’s character” has so much casual misogyny and mischaracterization it’s insane. It adds sexual abuse to her backstory, makes her scared of and unable to speak in front of a man she insults to his face in canon, and writes her as feeling “impure” and unworthy of love because she has scars. When I first read it I thought it was a character bashing fic, but no the author genuinely claims to love Edelgard.
