"Yogurt" to some, バン漆 [BanUru] to others. What's so appealing about shipping Uruha with his unnamed bodyguard with the bandanna?

Who's a Yogurt Now?

Introducing Uruha Yoji: apprentice to Samura Seiichi of the Iai White Purity Style, Seitei War veteran, admirer and friend of the hero Rokuhira Kunishge, and Bearer of the enchanted blade Kumeyuri!

This goof of a man graced us with his presence for the first time in chapter 47, where he was picked up by Hakuri and Chihiro to be escorted to safety after the Hishaku raided Kokugoku Hotsprings. We quickly learned that he's both competent and a ridiculous simp -seriously, the man worships Kunishige-, with his true personality residing somewhere in the middle of all his exaggerated expressions. Uruha is a man of extremes with matching mercurial mood swings-he's got crazy eyes for a Rokuhira one minute and soft, nostalgic expressions the next.

He also dearly missed Kunishige after learning of his death. We're talking "absolutely no hope or motivation to live" levels of despair:

So in short, Uruha is a very passionate guy. His love runs deep. But he's got enough life experience at this point to keep himself in check when he needs to. Instead of taking Hiruhiko's bait at the station, he stays put to let Chihiro protect him. Maybe his younger self would have flown off the handle, but Uruha as we know him will value his life enough to push the rage and grief down to get things done. He's got his shit together where it counts even if he's still a mess on the inside.

Uruha's also used to being taken care of. He lets the guards usher him out and away, he lets Chihiro and Hakuri protect him (well, try to in Hakuri's case), and he still defers to Samura like an apprentice. This is a war veteran who can defend himself, mind you. But something about his demeanor makes me think of an adult who never quite grew out of needing to be supported and sheltered by someone else. He acts kind of immature at times for a man who's probably in his mid-30's. This man was made to be cared for and spoiled rotten by his partner.

We know far less about the Bandanna Guard (hereafter referred to as Ban-niki, the JP nickname for him). Ban-niki was technically alive for just two chapters before getting offscreened and put on gruesome display by Hiruhiko. We can tell he admired Uruha and cared a lot about him, though:

Not the plural "you" as in all the Bearers- just "you" for Uruha.

Ban-niki's also plenty strong himself. His confidence in facing down the Hishaku raiders was damn sexy, and even Hiruhiko acknowledged that the Steam Squad forced him to step in and handle things personally when he didn't want to. So this isn't a guy that was meant to be cheap fodder. He's strong and capable and brings everything he has to bear to protect Uruha.

Ban-niki also has a normal manner of speaking in Japanese so it puts him at a sharp contrast to Uruha's mishmash of old-timey samurai-esque phrasings and modern K-pop stan fangasming. Small wonder he's usually the top!

Hot Spring Soup

I don't ship BanUru myself but I completely understand why some people do.

I'm no expert or anything, but I have read hundreds of BL manga. We're talking over 600 stories that I've tracked as "completed" here. And the scenario between Uruha and Ban-niki is a more compelling premise than a decent chunk of what I've read.

To start: the sense of imbalanced statuses. We have two men of indeterminate ages. One is probably in his mid-30's, the other could be anything from 20 on up. So there's an age gap angle to HC for people who like that sort of thing. Next, there's the gap between their social status. Uruha is a respected war hero and veteran with scars to prove it. He's the master of a legendary weapon that's credited for saving Japan and winning the war too. So he's got a lot more social pull than Ban-niki, a strong sorcerer who was assigned to guard him. But Ban-niki is the one who talks to him like they're exceptionally close.

I talked a bit about this in my Chapter 50 rant but I'll do it again here because it's one of the most important things to understand about Yogurt/BanUru as a ship (at least for those who care about JP pronoun shenanigans). Ban-niki refers to Uruha as あんた (anta), a loaded pronoun that can be offensive in many circumstances. It's very coarse and shouldn't be used unless you're trying to insult someone or you know you're just that tight with each other. We're talking deeper than just friends here. Not necessarily romantic, but more than what could be applied to most types of relationships. (Japanese has more gradient terms for the depths of the bonds and feelings between people than English does, so while I don't have a perfect understanding, anta is definitely implying more than hanging out together for years and knowing some of each other's secrets.)

On the surface, it would be highly inappropriate for Ban-niki to use this when referring to Uruha. A more standard option would be to use Uruha's name instead -even dropping the -san honorific might have been more polite. Kimi would have been a good option for a casual/friendly feel, but the difference in social status between the two would still make it a bit weird. Omae would have been perfect if we were supposed to interpret them as equal manly friends despite the social/age gaps. But the author went with anta for some reason! Why? Who knows! But it implies that they were more than just friends.

Next, we have one that cares deeply for the other. Gives his life to protect the man, and not just out of a sense of duty- that might be how they met, but that wasn't all it was in the end. It may never have been just a job to Ban-niki in the first place with how fervent he was about protecting Uruha when the news of Kunishige's death broke. Meanwhile, Uruha's still obsessed with Kunishige over a decade after he last saw the man. He mourns his death and completely loses the will to live- angst. One person yearning for another who can't get over their dead love is a staple of the romance genre, isn't it? You can add any kind of seasoning on this that you like- Uruha never got to confess to Kunishige, he and Kunishige had a fling before circumstances drove them apart, Uruha confessed but was rejected and never got over it, he realized what his feelings were too late- whatever you want. ANGST. And that's just from Uruha's perspective!

But with angst comes the potential for healing: Ban-niki can be the one to mend Uruha's broken heart. Whether he fully healed it or just helped with the pain is up to the shipper's discretion, but it's fertile ground all the same. These guys were stuck together in a hot spring together for three years. They bathed together every day- they know each other's bodies from that alone. Uruha thought of the whole squad fondly but often used Ban-niki as a sort of face for all of them. The guy who was comfortable using anta with him was the one who told him to flee and live, and the one who wanted to give him a warm welcome at the station. I don't have to stretch a single brain cell to imagine Uruha and Ban-niki sitting under the stars and having heart-to-hearts deep into the night, okay? They bonded with each other deeply during those years together; surely Uruha found comfort in Ban-niki so he's able to be the goofball we meet him as.

Lastly, even if you don't care about the hurt/comfort potential, there's another compelling angle to the ship: Uruha's weirdo personality combined with Ban-niki's manly and earnest one. Uruha's definitely an adult, there's no doubt about that. But his immature expressions leave the door wide open to interpretations on how he'd act as a lover. Would he be a bratty bottom? A passionate uke? A teary pillow princess? Sky's the limit with him! Add Ban-niki's mostly blank character template and you can do whatever you want with them. He gets interpreted as a doting top a lot of the time, which doesn't seem OOC to me- just an extension of his ardent feelings mixed with a bit of a carer dynamic that comes with his status as a bodyguard. But there's plenty of room to make him into the shipper's ideal type of character for the pairing.

As for UruBan/top Uruha, I got valuable feedback from some top Uruha believers! (Sorry about that!) Not all simps need to be immediately shoved into the bottom role, after all. There's a strong case to be made for Uruha as a needy, selfish top that relies a little too much on Ban-niki to feel good. There's also appreciating that he has cool and commanding facets to his personality that can come out in the bedroom- war hero x admirer, anyone? Or just, you know, the (presumed) older, more experienced man taking the lead despite how goofy he normally appears. The gap between Goofy Uruha and Sensual Uruha is pretty appealing, now that I think about it... yes....

At any rate, this is an extremely flexible ship that works as fixed or vers- there's just enough information provided about the characters to provide a solid framework. Choosing which aspects to highlight to create the perfect dynamic is up to the shipper.

Doomed Yaoi

There's definitely a market for tragic love. BanUru is basically catnip for the folks who enjoy the premise of doomed lovers- two men meet each other, find comfort and love despite the tragedy of loss, only for disaster to strike again. Seriously, poor Uruha. He lost the man he admired most then saw his friends' corpses lined up to mock him a few scant years later. Twist the knife a little to make one of those friends the love he never thought he'd be able to find (again) and BAM. Instant crushed heart, just add bloody hot springs water and serve in a paper cup.

Uruha flashes back to Ban-niki twice when entrusting his revenge to Chihiro in chapter 49. Not the team or other members, not even Kunishige twice to emphasize how important he was. Just two shots of Ban-niki with Kunishige in-between. It's reasonable to interpret it as Ban-niki being special to him, I think! He does care for the whole squad- he flashes back to them on the bench as well, and talked positively about them as a group. But Ban-niki is the one he thinks of most. Instead of having members of the group take turns interacting with Uruha, it was all Ban-niki. His words are the ones Uruha recalls when he's in a pinch. That's enough to imply romantic implications if you want to ship it IMO.

Uruha's deep affection for Ban-niki is beautifully tragic when viewed as a doomed romance. He loved, lost, loved, and lost again- it doesn't have to be romantic both times to move someone to tears for him. I don't care for this type of story personally, but I can see why others would. I mean, I'm not one to cast shade at people who like to be hurt real good in the way they prefer- Texhnolyze is my favorite anime. So for people who like sad romance, BanUru might be the right choice as a pick-up. It's certainly not going to get any less depressing at this point. But there's always an opportunity for more pain as the series goes on!

I think it's safe to say that this ship was given a bunch of rocket propellant condensed into what, two chapters? Kind of insane! But it seems to be on-brand for Hokazono-sensei given what he's done with HakuHiro so far. My man knows how to write a "bromance". Anyway, if I've missed anything, please yell at me so I can add it in. I tried to do justice for the Yogurt believers out there but there's a good chance I dropped some details. HakuHiro took me over quite thoroughly and the rot has spared only a few brain cells that I can use for everything else.

Up to this point it was basically urban legend type stories you had learnt about Thor. I mean, a god from space? Sounds awfully convenient in this economy.

So you both met, and Thor was still recovering from literally everything but he is recovering and he is gettig his found family yadayada.

You both have a minimum conversation as he says farewell to the mutual friend that you had came to meet and he's all like "farewell, fair maiden, until we meet again" on you swoon bc Chris Hemsworth amirite. ANYWAY you both do meet again after he comes back to visit after schenagians with the gotg gang(the movie hasnt come out idk what's going on)

He is the counter weight of clumsiness, because he is also clumsy and two negatives make a positive right? Anyway, what I'm saying is that when you're clumsy, you'll have some comically helpful scene where Thor catches it accidentally and then he just looks up like "I got you pretty lady ;)" expect it's a lot less smooth.

Golden Retriver!!! He can make you comfortable in 0.00001 seconds or less. He is such a supportive guy, even if he may have no idea what he's supporting because god moment, but he is here for you!!! He probably talks to Bruce about how he can learn stuff faster to catch up with what you're saying.

You'll be happy to find out that this man also hates horror movies, BUT he did read Twilight bc Tony convinced him it was supposed to be a masterpiece. Please give him better recommendations he is in too deep it isnt ok nor fun for anyone.

I'm going to be entirely honest, please be patient with him, your humor flies over his head half of the time. He's still adjusting, but one thing he IS familiar with is sarcasm. I think he finds sarcastic people really comforting and cool, and he thinks you're the most comforting and coolest of them all.
