emotional abuse is so great you guys its so freaking awesome its so amazing it’s so liberating to be called scum and a shame and not right in the head. i took a pepsi away from my dad because it’s 10pm and he’s diabetic and he already had two pepsi’s (this was gonna be his third) and i said “nope im not opening this for you sorry buddy but it’s bedtime im cutting you off” as a joke and my dad spat on me and started yelling saying that im awful and terrible for a daughter and that was out of line. then he threatened to go to the store at this late hour in order to buy pop. said that im a shame to have as a daughter. and refused to drink anything afterwards.

out on the highway
older!Eddie x reader
this is a mid-2000's little blurb where Eddie is in his late 30's/early 40's and ends up in Oregon for whatever reason. maybe this is even drifter!eddie. there are so many isolated gas stations and mechanic garages where I am, I think about this every time I am on the road.
wc: 770
It was a dark and foggy November night when you pulled over to the first gas station for 50 miles on your long trek to the Pacific Northwest. Only a sliver of a moon in the sky and very few visible stars, most of them obscured by bully clouds.
The two pumps under a metal awning were well-lit, as were the modest mechanic garage and mini mart connected to it, but the rest of the surrounding land was nothing but agriculture fields with no other sign of human life to be found.
Perhaps you’d watched too many horror movies and episodes of Forensic Files, but this place gave you the creeps bad enough to make you wonder if it might be better to chance your luck and see how far you could get on fumes.
You opened your door a crack, enough to stick the toe of your foot out, and a song from the newest Arcade Fire album Funeral blared from your speakers, just before you turned the ignition off.  You were about to get out and pump your own gas, because that was what you were used to—but then there stood a person, mere feet away, and you sank back, ready to slam your door, feeling suddenly threatened.
The person in question was a man in light blue coveralls, with the added warmth of a leather jacket and black, fingerless gloves.  He had dark, wavy hair, just long enough to tuck behind his ears with two silver hoop piercings in one lobe, and there was some type of tattoo design peeking out of his collar on his throat.  His eyes were dark brown and kind, and you couldn’t help but notice the thin scar that pulled down the skin of one eye and made it droop slightly.
It took you an extra second to realize he had a cat with him.  The orange and brown calico teenager was perched on his shoulder and he steadied it with one hand to keep the feline secure while the tail swished behind.  The hand that held the cat was slashed in white scars, decorated in chunky, silver rings, and the fingernails had chipped black polish on them.
He stopped abruptly, not wanting to scare you, not when that eastern side of the state had too many similarities to the scene of the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
“Sorry, hi, I’m Eddie,” he opened the palm of his free hand and spread his fingers out in a bit of a Spock greeting to let you know he was safe.  “And this is Yvette,” he added, gesturing to the calico cat that he gently lowered to the ground.  You both watched her sprint off to the garage and through a tiny door that had been cut in the sheet metal.
“Regular or super?” He asked, clicking the pump handle off the port before you could get out and do it yourself.
“Don’t worry about it, I don’t mind—-” you were about to step down to do it yourself.
But then he chuckled softly, realization dawning.  “You can’t pump your own gas in Oregon,” he let you know in a patient voice, avoiding your eyes.  “I have to do it.  It’s the law," and at that last bit, he wiggled his eyebrows.
“Oh, of course,” you gave a ‘silly me’ laugh and crawled back in behind the wheel to shut the door before rolling the window down.  You gave him 20 bucks, and then you watched him from the side mirror as he stood there making sure you got what you paid for.  He was humming a song; one you couldn't place.
“So,” you spoke up, sticking your head out of the window.  “How long have you lived here?”
He worked his jaw as he checked the rolling numbers on the gas tank, tucking a hair that escaped to his cheek, still never looking directly at you.  “I’ve been here a while,” he said, vaguely.
You stared at your steering wheel for a bit, until you heard the pump click to let him know your tank was full.
“Thank you,” you said out the window.  He cleared his throat and said a gentle, “you’re welcome”, as he twirled your gas cap closed and snapped the shield into place.  You watched him head back into the garage, with several cats circling his feet.
You spent the next several miles on the desolate road wondering about Eddie, why he looked so familiar, and how he’d ended up in such a po-dunk town.  You wondered about him until you were sleepy and had to pull over at a roadside motel to get some rest.
You weren’t very far from the gas station, and you wondered if he would still be there in the morning.

Proof of Insurance (and deferral)?
Hello, I live in washington state, and have a mitigation hearing tomorrow for a speeding ticket. It's my first, so I have a few questions. In my ticket im charged with no proof of insurance, BUT I was wrong, I had my insurance I was just confused, I did not realize our AAA was our insurance as well as the aid that they're known for. Anyways, since then I have lost my wallet. So I have a temporary lisence but still no insurance card. So how do I get proof that I had insurance on that day? I have an insurance policy card I've been keeping in the dash. Will that work? Then how do I get this deferred? Do I ask the judge, or do I need to go to the courthouse today to get a form, etc. Thanks for any help.""

Recently my friend had an accident. His car is an import and the insurance company want to write it off and as they cannot get hold of replacement parts. Does he have the right to refuse their offer for pay out as the car is worth more than they are giving him. Or can he settle the claim with them by asking them to pay for the repair if he can sort out a garage who is willing to fix his car for less than the insurance company had suggested.""

Currently I pay $122.00 for car insurance with State Farm. This is going to go up I am sure since I moved back to a larger city and when I lived here before I was paying a lot more. Oh and I also have renters for about 10 bucks a month.... okay so I just was quoted by Gieco with lower deductibles, from the more expensive city and I was quoted at about $68 (without the renters) Thoughts on the matter, is this possible should I make the switch? How much should a car cost? Really.?
Just from some light browsing on the internet, it seems like they (the advertisers/car manufacturers) want us to believe that $30k is a reasonable median cost for a new car in the U.S. The price goes up disporportionately if they can call it a 'crossover' or the holy grail: SUV!!! $$$$$$$$ Assuming a person makes around $50k a year gross/ $30k a year net (is that a reasonable assumption for the U.S.?), and assuming the car will be worth close to $0 in 5 years, a $30k car works out to be around 20% of his or her income, not including gas repairs insurance et cetera. Is this reasonable? Is it sustainable? Are we heading for a 'correction' in auto pricing? or is the plan that we all just use financing tricks to perpetuate these exhorbitant prices?""

When will a vandalism( to my vehicle) go off my record for insurance purposes???
About 2.5 years ago some kids used nylons and a hamburger wrapper in my gas tank to set my truck on fire. It was a brand new tahoe with dealer plates and it had to be deemed totaled due to damages. Now I am trying to change insurance and get quotes and even though I was not at fault and didn't even know these children it increases my premiums by about 600 every 6 months. Does anybody know when this will go off my record? I cant understand why I'm being held financially accountable for some delinquents behavior.

Car insurance quote help.?
So this is personal, but I'm going to be emancipated soon or at least when I turn 18, and I'm going to be living in my car or possibly renting at a friends house for around $100. ""How to save more money as a teen, for a car and motorcycle?""
I'm about to turn 16, and would like to save up for a reliable, cheap (2k-4.5k), good-looking, car. It has to be American, or anything other than Honda, Subaru, Toyota, Lexus, Hyundai, etc. cause dad works for GM. I am paying for the car on my own, most likely, but maybe I can convince parents to pay 1k or so. Money is tight right now in my family. Dad got demoted last year during GM's bankruptcy, and may get a promotion in spring. My Mom is opening a restaurant this year, which is going to cost a lot. I got a job in November at a brand new Kroger grocery store, where I get minimum wage and cannot work over 16 hours per week because I'm only 15. I have saved a little over 1.2k in the bank. I also have invested $500 of my own money this year into stocks, which are up a little. This might sound dumb to some, but I have dreamed of buying a motorcycle. I want a Kawasaki Ninja 650R. AND YES, I KNOW INSURANCE COSTS MONEY, (FOR CAR AND MOTORCYCLE) I'M NOT AN IDIOT. I also need to plan on how to save for that. Any tips, help, and info would be great! Thanks so much.""

Young Driver Insurance?
Ok, here's what's going on. i am basically a new driver and have passed my test 18 march last year. the time has come for me getting a car, however the insurance premiums are ridiculously high. I have used the comparing websites, but they offer no real result, so I phoned a few up. This is what they gave me, I was asking for a quote, on an 04 Renault Clio 1.2 Dynamic with 3 doors. Co-operative insurance 4645 (Full Comp) Direct line Over 3000(Full Comp) (they wouldn't give an accurate result, I'd have to be transferred onto another dept.) Quinn Direct 6000 (Third party, Fire & Theft only, i was then informed that their premiums where increased) All in my own name and not under any parents, however it seems like the best option at the moment. I do know about a few companies that specialise in young driver insurance, one called Young Marmalade and another called i-Kube. Both are cheaper, but there are catches to policies, i-Kube requires you to have a GPS tracker fitted, if you drive passed 11PM at night a 100 Penalty is incurred, and for each night you drive past said time. with young marmalade you need to have the pass plus scheme. I also know that premiums are subject to a post code area rating. (CH 62) so if anyone could tell me where cheap insurance for this type of car is I would be great-full.""

Mr. Money Mustache, UBER Driver
Special Surprise: Did you know there is now an MMM Android App? It’s really good. Beautiful offline reading. Alerts you to new articles automatically, if you want. Thousands of users already. Free. Many more features (plus an Apple version) to come. It’s on the Google Play Store.
—-
About two years ago, I switched from taking my personal car to the airport, to hailing Ubers and Lyfts. The math of it was pretty simple: Uber was cheaper than paying for my driving and parking*. And that was before the considerable joy and time savings of not having to park in the airport lot and cram in among the huddled masses in the shuttle buses. Nowadays I sit in the back and get some work done like an Executive, leaving the driving to someone else.
Once I arrive at my destination city, these ride sharing services have replaced at least 90% of instances where a car rental would be useful. Between walking, renting a bike, public transit and calling a Lyft, a car rental is only useful for destinations deep in the boondocks such as a ski resort or a distant beach cabin. Which is another great improvement, since renting a car at an airport has never been a fun experience.
But during all these Luxury Executive rides, I’d often get to talking with the driver. We would talk about life, family, money and business. I always inquired about their experience with rideshare driving, and the response was inevitably something like this:
UBER DRIVER: “Oh, it’s pretty good. On a good day I’ll make a hundred bucks, sometimes even two hundred if I really work it and stay up late.”
MMM: “Is that your profit after subtracting the cost of driving?”
UBER DRIVER: “No, that doesn’t include gas. But I’ll only use, like, not even a full tank – maybe thirty bucks”
“Hmm”, I would think to myself.
“If this driver is burning through $30 of gas, (twelve gallons), they’re probably covering over 250 miles. Whether they realize it or not, it’s costing them $125 in direct car costs before even accounting to the damage to their health or the risk of injury. Thus, the net profit might be as low as $50 for a big day on the road, or five bucks an hour.”
There’s no way Uber could be such a successful company if the pay rate were really this low. Is there?
But on the other hand, some of my Uber drives to the airport have included a Dodge Ram pickup truck (V-8 engine, fancy wheels, bought brand new on credit), a BMW X5 and even a Hummer H3 (with over 250,000 miles on the odometer). Maybe people really are that  uninformed about the cost of driving. As my friend Bill said when we talked about this:
“Imagine developing a company specifically to take advantage of people’s ignorance of how expensive it really is to drive their own car. What would this company look like? “
(the answer is of course that it would look like very much like Uber or any other ridesharing company)
To resolve this mystery (and as a way of getting some test miles on my new electric car), Mr. Money Mustache decided to go deep undercover in September 2016, and sign up as a driver for both Uber and Lyft services.
The Initiation
Using another driver’s referral code, I signed up on the Uber system and started to follow the instructions. I needed a background check, medical exam, car safety inspection and a few other daunting things. Luckily, Uber runs facilities called “Greenlight Centers” which put all this stuff in one place. The closest one to me was about 40 miles away in Denver, so I charged up my new Leaf and headed down.
When I arrived, I found an interesting scene that nicely personifies our new sharing economy. It was a mashup of an Apple Store and the DMV. Modern design and furniture, good music and glossy tablets everywhere, combined with an ocean of slightly desperate and bored looking people waiting to start their new driving careers. And Mr. Money Mustache, trying to blend in.
It was a funny feeling, spending those three precious hours of my Tuesday morning, waiting in queues and filling out forms. I was keen to learn about the driver experience and how things work in the New Economy. But I also felt a bit of the nervous “I’m applying for a new job” energy of the other applicants, and like a bit of a fraud for being here when I had absolutely no interest in truly having a job.
There was a trendy little cafe in the corner of the room, so I strolled over and picked up a Clif bar and a coffee. Due to my naive privilege as a former tech worker, I expected it all to be free – after all, don’t all offices offer free coffee and snacks, along with a keg of local beer and another tap for Kombucha? But a man popped out from around the corner and rung me up for $3.85. On top of that, it was a bland coffee in a small cup. This was an interesting reminder that working in a lower-training job is a different world than the one you and I probably both inhabit, here at the top of the economy.
When the process was finally done, my 25-year-old Uber concierge looked up from his iPad and issued me a genuinely warm congratulations and we shook hands.
“So that’s it?”, I asked
“Yeah! That’s it! You could go out and get in your car start making some money RIGHT NOW!”
“Hmmm…”
“Nah”, I thought to myself. “Eighty miles of driving plus three hours in an office building is more than enough wasted indoor time for me for the next little while.”
The spoiled retiree in me loves hard work, but only the right kind of hard work. The sedentary locked-indoors variety of work always falls to the bottom of the list. As you can tell by the low frequency of these blog posts.
My First Ride
Eventually, I was ready to give it a whirl. I cleaned up my car, stuck the Uber decal on the windshield, put on some nice clothes, mounted my phone on a sturdy dashboard clamp, and fired up the app. Within minutes, I had my first ring.
RIDE REQUESTED! John, 5 minutes away.
The ring was deafeningly loud, because (as I later learned after half an hour of looking unsuccessfully for a way to change it) the Uber app overrides your ring volume setting and sets it to !!MAXIMUM!!  I was so startled that I could hardly slide the “accept” button, but I eventually got safely on the road.
I recognized the address as Longmont’s “Pumphouse” brew pub, right downtown. I headed down the hill and scoped the area, and eventually found John. As he hopped in the car I slid the “start trip” button and his destination was revealed as the local Marijuana shop, just 1.9 miles away away.
John and I exchanged pleasant conversation and he was impressed by the quick silence of the electric car. I dropped him off at Native Roots and then parked nearby, expecting another fare to pop up just as quickly.
Ride 1: 5 minutes waiting, 5 minutes driving, 1.2 miles unpaid, 1.9 miles paid. Net fare to me: $3.37
But the second fare wasn’t quite as quick. Fifteen minutes later, the Uber app rang again. It was John, now properly restocked and thrilled that I was still there in the weed shop parking lot. We headed back to the Pumphouse.
Ride 2: 15 minutes waiting, 5 minutes driving, 1.9 miles paid. Net fare to me: $3.37 … plus TIP $5.00!
Hey this wasn’t so bad: that five dollar tip really brought up the average. I was thirty minutes into my career and up about 12 bucks, minus five miles of car costs.
After another five minutes of idle time, the app rang again. This time it was a suburban address listed as 12 minutes (which turned out to be almost four miles) away. I decided to take the ride anyway, in the spirit of experimentation.
I got to the house, but nobody was there. After a minute, I used the Uber app to send the customer a text message. “Oh sorry!”, he said, “My phone GPS isn’t working well because we’re inside so it probably shows us in the wrong place! We’re just on the next street.”
I drove around a bit more and eventually found the young couple, and the app revealed a nice surprise: they were headed all the way to Boulder, which was over 12 miles from this part of Longmont. Surely now I would start earning the big bucks.
After 24 minutes of smooth, expert driving and pleasant conversation, I dropped them off at a restaurant. But I was surprised to see that the total wasn’t that impressive:
Ride 3: 10 minutes waiting, 4 miles unpaid, 12.4 miles paid. Net fare to me: $13.96. No Tip.
Driving in the Happening City
Now I was in Boulder, which has a much bigger scene than Longmont. Everybody is rich, every night is a big night, Colorado University is right downtown and it’s all action – there are no real suburbs. Due to high rider demand, the city operates in a perpetual “Surge Mode” which means Uber Fares are 20-30% more lucrative, and there is virtually no wait time for fares. And now, I was right downtown. So the app shrieked its notification tone immediately.
The customer was only a mile away, but due to the incredible slowness of trying to drive a 14-foot-long, 3300 pound Racing Wheelchair in a dense city it took me a lot of slow gliding in traffic and waiting at long traffic lights to get there. It was a couple of younger guys, heading back downtown.
We slogged through the dense traffic yet again at roughly one third of bicycling speed, and I earned my five dollar fare.
The app rang again, and I saw from the map it was yet another non-downtown person, probably looking for another ride downtown.
I decided not to play this game anymore, contributing to car traffic in a city that needs fewer cars. So I let this ride request go to another driver and set my destination to Longmont, hoping to find a customer heading that way so I could get paid for the ride home. There were none.
So I flew the Leaf back along the highway to home, and stopped at the grocery store to pick up some fresh food and a free battery charge for the car.
Total stats for the day:
4 Rides 1:51 hours 18.6 miles unpaid 17.2 miles paid $32 including tips ~$18 of car costs roughly $7 per hour net
Ongoing observations
After joining Uber as a driver, it was easy to add on a Lyft license: you can submit scans or photos of the same examination info to both companies. So over the next few months, I fired up both Uber and Lyft apps to do a bit more driving and collect some more observations. I had a lot of fun, but made very little money.
One time, I was summoned by a 13-year-old girl coming out of the middle school, effectively turning me into Mr. Schoolbus Dad. After finding her in the school lineup, she directed me to the elementary school, where we picked up her little brother. I dropped them both off safely at home in a rusty suburban area nearby.
Another ride was from a college student, deep in the Colorado U campus. It took me forever to navigate the throngs of after school foot and vehicle traffic and find this young lad in the crowd. During the ensuing 3MPH transit of Boulder, I couldn’t help but remark, “Wow! I apologize for how slow this trip is going. I’m usually on my bike when I cross Boulder, which is a lot faster.” Our final destination was a strip mall, and he directed me meticulously through the entire parking lot so he could be let off within 20 feet of the front door of the restaurant. End fare for about 35 minutes of work, even with surge pricing, was another six bucks. My resolve to avoid driving cars in Boulder was reinforced.
My favorite times to be a driver were Friday nights. It was fun to feel the energy of people going out on the town, and find out what was going on.  I could see Uber driving to be a good escape for single people looking to meet new friends (or romances), because I almost always got along well with the customers, often exchanging business cards or email addresses with people when we found something in common. On longer rides with people over 30, the topic almost invariably led to life, business, and money, which led to Mustachianism, which led to me admitting my secret identity. Thus, some of my past Uber customers may even be reading this article today(?)
But in the end, it was hard to stay motivated to keep doing this experiment. There is just usually something better to do than driving around in a car, and I wasn’t willing to sacrifice too much of my life to gather more data. And with the financial gain of rideshare driving being negligble, I am surprised that there are so many people who do it.
How to Make the Most of a Low-Profit Situation
Still, as with everything in life, I did my best to optimize Uber driving for both fun and money. From my experience as well as reading online forums, the best way you can do it is:
Use the referral and bonus system heavily. Actual driving doesn’t pay well, but I have seen bonuses pop up on my app offering between $100-$500 to refer other drivers. There are also “weekly guarantee” offers that come up occasionally, offering more pay in exchange for meeting a certain threshold.
Use the lowest cost and most fuel-efficient car you can find. Uber requires you to have a fairly new (under 10 years) car, so get something on the older side of that spectrum, but with low miles. A 2009 Prius, for example, uses less than half the fuel of most cars of similar size.
Focus your driving around on “Surge Pricing”. By watching the app throughout the days and months, you will learn when your area enters periods of higher demand. Special events like Halloween, late weekend nights or major league sports events are popular times.
Try to find trips involving highways. Since you get paid mostly by the mile, you earn almost ten times more more money at 60 MPH than you make in on a long trip through central city where you might average only 6 MPH.
Experiment with the “set destination” feature to filter for rides going your way. Taking fares with you on your commute to work or to an airport.
Make the most of your downtime: there will still be lots of waiting between fares. If you bring a book, podcast, laptop or make business-related calls that help you learn a trade that pays more than driving, you can get yourself into a more lucrative trade.
Suggestions for Uber and Lyft
During the course of this experiment, I happened to receive emails from relatively senior people at both Uber and Lyft for unrelated reasons. So I took the opportunity to make some suggestions to make things friendlier for drivers:
Report the total driving time and miles for each ride and each shift, clearly specifying paid and unpaid miles and hours.
Provide an drivers an estimate of the car costs incurred, and estimated hourly earnings after these costs
Allow drivers to specify the types of rides they are willing to accept. For example, “only ring me for riders within 1 mile”, or “I would like to be paid for for both pickup mileage and rider mileage.”
Provide drivers with the details of where the person is going, or at least how long of a ride it is. Right now, Uber has all this incredibly useful information at the time of booking, but deliberately withholds it from the driver.
I was surprised that none of these suggestions got anywhere. This was a disappointment to the Economic Libertarian in me, because it seems obvious that  an open market between buyer and seller is the key to more efficiency.
In fact, early in my driving career I learned how much the unpaid driving was hurting my profitability so I stopped accepting distant fares. The app quickly sent me this note:
Yeah, right. How about you just stop ringing me with fares that are ridiculously far away, instead?
When these companies deliberately tilt the field, they are being sneaky, which causes them to lose public trust, which causes the public to vote in a bunch of sclerotic regulation to protect the drivers and the public. If you, as a company, just avoid being a dick to people in the first place and treat them with complete openness and good old-fashioned honesty, they are more likely to let you run free.
Since I started this experiment a year ago, Uber has fallen into a world of trouble and bad publicity. Their internal culture of sexual harassment was blown wide open, along with the misdeeds of the wild and temperamental former CEO. From specific programs to evade government regulation to annoying treatment of drivers, Uber triggered a widespread backlash which became the #deleteuber campaign. Saying “Uber” is now a bit like uttering the words “ConAgra” or “Philip Morris” or “Exxon”.
Meanwhile, from the very beginning I noticed a friendlier tone in the way Lyft operates – see this 2016 interview with Lyft more laid-back founder John Zimmer.
In the End..
In general, I really want companies like Uber and Lyft (and Tesla, AirBnb, Google, Amazon and many of the other tech companies that have been stirring things up so much lately) to succeed, because the benefits to all of us greatly outweigh the inconvenience of the disruption.
For example, some people worry about what will happen to driving jobs as self-driving vehicles gradually take over. But I’m excited about the ways this can make our lives safer, quieter, and less expensive as we give up on owning personal cars, ride bikes much more, and use automated cars as a service whenever the bike is impractical. Technology provides a lumpy ride, but it also provides change which is an essential ingredient in every human life to avoid getting into a rut. So, share on.

  * this sentence surely made you ask, “but what about the BUS, Mustache?!?” – good question. Of course I’d always choose biking, then public transit as the first two options, but the airport is 45 miles away (well over 2 hours by bike) and the bus requires a transfer in Denver, which makes it even slower than biking. Also, both Uber and Lyft have referral programs which give you credit for referring friends – I still have a few credits in my Uber account.
If you want to try Uber or Lyft, sign by randomly choosing one of these codes from friends, and you’ll get $5-10 off of your first ride (and give a small surprise to some of the members of the MMM-HQ coworking space!)

Adventures in Not Owning A Car!
(I’ve recently chosen to forego car ownership and thought my adventures and challenges in attempting this lifestyle might be amusing or interesting to some. It also helps me to document my process and ultimately see if this is the right choice for me. If you want to skip the adventure parts, then just read the beginning and the end: money, challenges & pros!)
My first week of being 36 was not so hot, well at least from first glance: I lost a new hire and I got into a fender. Of course, I believe that the Universe always works her magic in my ultimate favor, so despite the seeming heaviness of those situations, looking back, I can see her wisdom.
The fender resulted in me selling my car for a few hundred bucks instead of trying to mend a really old car. At that time, I was also leaving the country in like a week and thought it prudent not to take out a loan and purchase a vehicle right before taking an international trip. So, the car situation was put on pause. Take note: pausing is an excellent practice when you’re in a situation and seeking answers! 😊
About two days before I left for Mexico, it came to me that I might be in the position to live my life without car ownership! When I did the math and thought about my lifestyle, it all seemed to make perfect sense. It was one of the most liberating feelings to realize that I, in fact, did not need to take out a huge loan (I love being debt-free and try to keep it that way) and make a purchase of a vehicle that I would then be in charge of keeping safe and healthy.
What made me an ideal prospective non-car-owner were these facts:
*Most of the year, I ride my bike to work. I can also walk if needed.
*I am single with no kiddos – no one else to ride around!
*My grocery stores are within walking or biking distance.
* I socialize mostly downtown, so I can also ride my bike, hitch a ride or take a short Lyft when I go out with friends.
* I don’t regularly take longer trips.
The only longer trips I make were:
* To my dad’s house in Scottsdale (about 20 minutes)
* To go hiking
*Occasionally: library (now that Burton Barr is closed ☹) Goodwill, Target.
So, I decided to give this lifestyle a go. It’s my 3-6 month experiment and so far I like it and I think it may be here to stay! Below are a few main areas of interest:
Tumblr media
The Basic Math of It
With Max, I was paying $93/month, plus about $50 in gas, along with regular maintenance and/or repairs. However, if I were to take out a loan and get another car, my expenses would be:
*Higher insurance: because fender and newer car, at least $100+ if not more like $150. Max did not have collision insurance, but a newer car would need that, so it would def be higher.
*Car Payment: probably $2-300/month
* $50 give or take for gas
*Maintenance/Repairs
*Totaling at least $450/month for a car that I would use maybe only 2-3 days a week, if that.
* Yearly total: $5400 and that is without any major repairs!
Without a car, these are my monthly expenses involving travel:
*Lyft Rides & tips: $100-$150 (to Dad’s, stores, socializing, hikes)
*Delivery fees for groceries & other items: $20
*Paying for Friends drinks, coffee, gas: $30-40
* Monthly total: $210 (give or take)
* Yearly: $2520-$3000
These are my best estimates, as I’m still tracking how this lifestyle really looks, but overall while it’s not as cheap as Max was, the situation with Max is no longer an option for me, so in reality, comparing owning a newer car with living car-free is the accurate comparison. It looks and feels way cheaper to live this way. Even if in certain months, I might want to take a roadtrip (rent a car, or zipcar, etc.) I can still afford to drop another hundred or so on using a car for that day, if I choose to go it alone. If I have a partner in crime, obviously I’ll pay for gas or meals, etc.
I’ve realized it does take thinking about travel and cost in a new way. While a trip up to visit my Dad may cost me around $40 roundtrip, and at first that seems “expensive,” I’m training myself to remember that I’m also not paying $300+ a month for insurance and a car. It’s just a new way to think about cars and money.
Grocery
Produce Adventures
When I had Max (my old ford taurus,) I would regularly hit up Food City for my produce, tortillas and pan dulce usually 2 times a week, as well as Frye’s for other items (cereal, organic milk, coconut oil, etc.) For the past 3 weeks, I have successfully ridden my bike to Food City for my produce. Since it’s a little sketch, I have been bringing my bike inside the store with me and no one has said a word! The lock I currently have is just a cable and I don’t trust it enough to leave it locked outside of any store. So, I take my bike in, I even walk it through the check-out line and it has not been a big deal. Until this weekend. Enter bald white dude security guard! I walked into the store as usual, going to grab a basket and he glared at me. Who glares at me?!?! No one glares at me! I’m the same gringa who always comes here to get her ready to eat avocados, cilantro and pan dulce! WTF. Why are you disrupting my happy weekend food routine?! Anyway, he told me in no uncertain terms that I could not bring my bike into the store, that there was a sign posted, etc, etc. I explained to him that I’ve already done it 3 times and no one has said a word to me, that I do not have a lock because I never lock my bike anywhere (basically true story b/c other than work, I rarely used to actually ride it anywhere.) He said he wouldn’t be doing his job if he let me in. I said, well then other guards are not doing their jobs because I’ve done this already 3 times, Mister Bald White Dude. And I explained how I literally walk it thru check-out like a cart and no one has said anything to me, etc. In the end, he would not let me stay to shop and there was no way I was leaving my bike outside unattended just for some produce. (Side-cultural-observation-note: the other weeks I have gone, it was earlier in the day and there were Hispanic male guards…I wonder if they didn’t stop me because I was a white girl, because they were unconcerned that I would cause trouble, because they really don’t give a shit about me and my bike, b/c they were scared to ask me to leave…..just interesting to note and I wish that they were all hispanic guards b/c they get me! <3!)
So, I am now exploring other ways and options as to how I can get my cheap produce. Inevitably, I’m going to invest in a strong u-lock that’s for sure. Just good to have. But, I also asked the Coronado Message Board (thanks, neighbors!) and discovered Carniceria Los Reyes, which is closer by about 4 blocks, smaller and on a major intersection. It’s a smaller Mexican grocery & bakery. I’m going to bike there next time and see how it goes! I need a place with fresh, cheap produce and I need tortillas (local, real ones) and pan dulce. This is my life.
Instacart Trial Run
For my other items, I have tried out Instacart and it seems to be a great option for me. I basically order enough of these goods for about 2 weeks or so (cereals, milk, gluten free bagels, crème cheese, etc.) Instead of these 3 steps: Lyfting to Frye’s, doing the shopping myself, then Lyfting back, I just order what I want online and done! While they are shopping for me, I can be home doing whatever I want. It’s a lot simpler this way and allows me to have more free time instead of about 1 hour of travel & shopping. If they do not have what you ordered, the shopper will call you and ask if there is a substitute option you’d like. You can tip in the app and I can give them my plastic bags to return to the store.
Lyft would be about $10-12 round trip, whereas delivery fee for Instacart is about $5, plus the added bonus of my time. They do have a membership option for free delivery which amounts to about $12.50 a month, but I’m not certain that commitment is worth it for me just yet.
Shopping/Gifts/House Items
I don’t shop or need much honestly, so it’s not like I’m Lyfting to stores every weekend, nor did I shop much even when I had Max. Maybe once a month if that, I would go play at the various Goodwills or need a birthday gift for someone and hit up Target, etc. However, with this lifestyle challenge, I am really pondering getting Amazon prime. I already have a Target charge, so anything I purchase from there is delivered for free, which is great, but they don’t always have what I’m looking for. For example, bike locks, specific journals, specific cell phone cases, etc. I’ve purchased or shopped for all these items recently from home. I probably will end up doing a Prime membership at some point, but I’m seeing how it pans out right now.
As for clothes, shoes, things I need to touch and feel, I’ll need to take a Lyft or wait until I go visit my family in Scottsdale and ask to use their car to make some trips. Most likely, I’ll only be up in Scottsdale about once a month, so it’s not like I’ll be mooching and I try to be aware of paying my way, filling up the tank or other ways of repaying them for the favor of free car use!
Challenges So Far
*Locking My Bike – I just don’t trust people and have heard too many stories about a stolen bike here in Phoenix. Even if I invest in a really good lock, I still have hesitation about leaving my bike outside, unattended.
*Thinking Twice About Trips – sometimes I opt out of family gatherings or other possible trips simply because I don’t want to be extravagant with this lifestyle and spend $100/week in lyfting. I don’t like feeling like there is a limit on how much I can spend on transportation. Maybe this feeling will subside once I get a few months under my belt and see that I can totally afford to live this way, and then some. It’s a part of the new way of understanding travel + money. My brain is still learning it, so sometimes it feels like a struggle.
*Weather – It hasn’t happened yet, but there will be rains in winter & summer, and there will be unsafe heat in the summer, when I won’t be able to walk and bike everywhere. Thankfully that’s only like 10% of the year, but still something I’ll have to consider and deal with.
*See above: Bald, White Security Guard who cramped my style.
Tumblr media
Overall Pros Thus Far
*Creative Thinking and Exploring: Not having my own car these past 3 weeks has ushered into my life new ways of thinking, new ideas and new challenges. I welcome all of them, honestly! While I enjoyed my life with Max, I also greatly enjoy the new energies that new pathways, routines, habits and choices bring into my life. I like breaking the mold of how my mind works and thinks about how things are supposed to be and feel. I never would have thought I’d be a person who made use of a grocery delivery service, but it really is so easy, affordable and a time saver! Living without a car has also made me explore what is right in my own neighborhood more! For example, taking my bike to The Velo, which is the bike shop like a block south of my work. What a freaking cool place! A bike shop with cute, friendly guys AND a café right next door. Can I just stay?! Or discovering McDowell Market/Café and Palabras Book store literally in my neighborhood! I’m totally enamored!
*The Art of Receiving: It has made me remember the grace with which it’s important to receive – receiving rides from friends, family, neighbors. Sometimes I pay for gas, other times for drinks or coffee for my friends or family. Sometimes I invite over for dinner or cook for them. I honor their generosity, feel grateful for it and desire to energetically balance it out in some appropriate fashion. Isn’t this how cultures used to live? I’ll give you some corn and in return you gift me a weaved basket. Here, hitch a ride on my wagon. Thanks, here’s some bread I baked. Those were the days! Well, in some small ways, I get to live that way now too. Here, ride with me! Thanks, here’s some salsa verde I just made!
*Less Things: I also LOVE the feeling of not owning a huge thing!!! Owning a car is a big responsibility that can get you into a lot of trouble and stress at times and when that does happen, it really sucks and can sometimes last a long time. By not owning a car, I basically avoid any and all of those possible situations. Currently, the most expensive item I own is this little machine I’m typing on. And that, for me, is a super liberating feeling. The way I look at owning things like cars, property, large technological things is that they take time and money. You often have to pay monthly for them or at least occasionally to upkeep and maintain them, maybe some kind of insurance or taxes, plus they cause you stress and time when they break, or just in general maintenance. I’ve seen both parents work at maintaining a home – yards, air conditioning, appliances, plumbing, etc. It’s just not for me. I’d much rather spend my time exploring a new city or taking a watercolor class, and happily pay rent or Lyft to take care of the practical things like housing and travel.
*Time Saving: It has also made me consolidate my shopping and think creatively. Instead of making a few grocery trips a week, I make sure that when I get it delivered or bike/walk myself to a grocery, that it’s all the things I need for a good while: produce enough for my week and dry goods enough for at least two. Ultimately planning this way is actually saving me time. Again!
*Living With What I Have: The above being said, if I forget an item or run out of something, instead of making a trip to the store for that 1 thing, I choose to make use of what I still have at home. If I run out of cereal, then I eat something else. Simpler that way.
*Vitamin D: Inevitably not just hopping into my car allows me ample time outside riding my bike or walking places, almost daily! In this beauteous desert, where it’s sunny, pleasant and dry about 9 months out of the year, I’m a lucky girl!! I’ll see about next summer when it’s over 110 and cross that bridge for a few months when I come to it, but for now, I’m enjoying this Arizona fall weather, cruising around on my bike! 😊
