Just fair warning- I said on my personal post about this that I wasn't going to talk about Neil Gaiman anymore, but as it's becoming clear that him and his publishers and anyone else who makes money off of him is circling the wagons and trying to bury these allegations, as well as some fans still defending and trying to 'rationalize' this information, I feel like, actually, we need to keep talking about him (as much as I cannot stand him and feel physically disgusted now when I so much as see his face somewhere). Specifically, the fact that he's a liar, master manipulator and should not, under any circumstances, be given access to his fans like he has in the past. At the very least. (And if you need to blacklist his name or even unfollow me so as to not be triggered, I completely understand, but I will always try to tag these posts accordingly and I think it's crucial right now that the truth be put where people can see)

This post specifically is in response to those 'rationalizations' I've seen, some that have gone as far as to blame the young fans/groupies that hooked up with him for being 'golddiggers' or just making a mountain out of a molehill for something they now regret. It's not that simple, yall. (And, again, this requires some amount of completely ignoring the story about him extorting his tenant for sex under threat of eviction of her and her three young children, I'm not sure how you 'rationalize' that under the best of circumstances)

So let's be clear here. What we know is that NG has routinely, for possibly an upwards of 30 years, pulled sexual 'partners' from his fan groups, most of whom are 18-22 year old young women (though possibly younger, accounts are coming forward of 16 year olds having allegedly been inappropriately touched/flirted/propositioned by him, which ig is the age of consent in the UK but still?? 16 year olds!!). This wasn't one or two times in the course of three decades, this was a constant pattern of behavior for him and for a very insidious reason.

This isn't to try to infantilize those fans or young women/young people in general or try to suggest that they couldn't have consented to sex with an older person or famous person. In fact, the onus isn't on them at all. This is about an older guy with a lot of fame, power and wealth choosing to sleep with people that he had already conditioned to idolize him and using that power imbalance to coerce them into doing things they didn't want to.

Regardless of one's age or gender identity, it can be difficult to impossible to say 'no' to someone like that. After all, you've been 'chosen' by the chosen one, you're special and not like everyone else, and if you don't do what the popular person everyone trusts is telling you to do you could end up ostracized. Alienated. Or worse. And you know what? Gaiman knew that! He knew it when he was crafting his 'approachable dad' persona on tumblr. He knew it when he was cultivating a fandom of personality. He knew it when he was having huge meetups to try to ensnare more victims. I hate to even think it, but I'm starting to believe he knew it when he was writing children's books too.

It's been talked about again and again in separate issues, but needless to say something not being strictly illegal does not make it inherently, morally okay. It does not erase the fact that this man has been essentially grooming his fandom to feel safe meeting/speaking with him so he can coerce those he can snare into sexual acts they're not comfortable with. That is predator behavior, whether strictly 'illegal' in the eyes of a court or not (but ofc I think he should be criminally punished even if I'm not naive enough to think he actually will be, because this IS rape and rape should be criminally punished)

I'm not personally advocating for anyone to give up being in his related fandoms, but what I am personally advocating for is that people don't forget who he is and what he's capable of, especially when he tries to crawl back to where he was (I'm almost certain he will eventually, as I've said).

Again, at the very least, we need to use what little influence we do have to keep him from infiltrating fan spaces again. He should not be on tumblr yukking it up with young people, he should not be at public appearances hitting on teenagers, he should not be given the unrestricted access to fans that he's 'enjoyed' for the past 30+ years because he is not a safe person. While I wish there was more in the way of restorative justice that could be done, I think at very, very least we should do what we can to limit his proximity to people he could hurt in the future. Make sure no one forgets, because sweeping this under the rug means Gaiman gets to hurt more people.

Lastly, no one is the wrong for having been manipulated by him. Let's make that very clear. What we're NOT gonna do is blame ourselves, each other, the victims, etc, for evil acts that Gaiman chose to do himself, time and time and time again. It doesn't help the situation and it certainly doesn't protect future potential victims. We were all duped because we're human and we attach and a lot of us want to believe there are good people out there, particularly those who make art that means so much to us.

And there are. But let's also use this a teaching/learning tool about how much faith we place in famous people in the future, regardless of how 'approachable' and 'safe' they might seem. Let's remember to have a healthy suspicion of creators/famous people that are oddly immersed in fandom spaces- yes, even the ones you still currently like that seem fine, as difficult as that may seem.

At the end of the day, we don't know them or what they're capable of doing or what they might be plotting to do to us. Support victims. Amplify their voices. Don't forget.

We have TWICE nominated a woman at the top of the ticket.

While Republicans are whining about having to wear a mask LIKE EVERYBODY ELSE DID, Democrats passed legislation to address the problem of unemployment, of vaccinations, of shipping logistics, while they were at it passed a HUGE infrastructure package, invested billions in green energy (our future) and ensured national security by manufacturing the technology materials needed to be the best in the world. Simultaneously creating a ton of well paying, respectable middle class jobs.

The right is too busy talking about Jewish space lasers, and checking out Hunter Biden’s junk, and keeping weed illegal, and worrying about bathrooms and sh*t.

Hello Mistrums Failbetter!!

I'm terribly sorry if this is not the place to try and bring this issue to light, but the pronouns feature doesn't seem to work. Setting the variable through Attend To Matters Of Identity works correctly, but it is not applied in the one place that I have found to make use of pronouns - the quote section of the player profile. It still displays them based on the character's gender (they in my case) instead of the chosen ones (in my case it).

Again, I am sorry if there Is a way to report issues through the game's site itself that I have missed, or if it is a non-issue(since I imagine the section could be using they for all characters, not just ones of mysterious and indistinct gender) this has just been bugging me since the update came out::::(

The 'they say...' box is working as intended. This box is kind of the word on the street about your character, in the same voice as the sidebar snippets about the world, like this one:

"What is the Correspondence? They say it's a series of confidential negotiations between the Masters and a devil of some note. They say it comprises the billets-doux written by Jack-of-Smiles to the Traitor Empress. They say it's the letter the Pope wrote, the one without which Rome would have been the Fourth City. They say if you read it your eyes boil and your hair turns the white of old ice. They say it's written on slate in the blood of poisoned bats."

What do the mysterious third person 'they,' who are so knowledgeable about everything, have to say about your character?

It's possible that introducing pronoun options is going to cause widespread and ongoing confusion regarding this box, so I'll keep an eye out for anyone else who was confused by it!

After writing Of Monks and Monkeys, this Tav grows on me. So they now have a character sheet and backstory lol

Tav（戴芙 |daai3 fu4 ）was born with a big red birthmark on her face. When the neighbors' kids bullied her and called her "Monkey ass", she beat them up badly and earned a reputation for being naughty and wild. Due to her face and personality, her parents deemed her prospect as a bride hopeless and decided to send her to the monastery at the age of 6 to become a monk.

All in all, Tav had a pretty good time training under the grandmaster and among peers. She was still the "naughty" one, the comic relief among the group, but in an endearing way. Her peers didn't laugh at her appearance, and the grandmaster treated boys and girls the same way and did not expect her to adhere to gendered etiquette. She eventually embraced a more androgynous identity and reclaimed their reputation as the Little Monkey. Their idol is, of course, the Monkey King.

Like the Monkey King, Tav as the most energetic, witty monk, among others, was sent by their master to retrieve a series of tomes from the West when they got kidnapped by the mindflayers.

When they woke up, their peers were nowhere to be found, but they met a new merry band of companions.

there has been a lot of discussion about who the character on the left could possibly be, and until we get confirmation from gege i think it’s impossible to say for sure. People have theorized about it being his mother, kenjaku in the form he originally met them in, or someone representing a bigger concept (eg. the first person he killed without a proper reason, or, based on the miko dress, a representation of how sorcerers/religious institutions rejected him for his appearance), which are all decent possibilities

all of those possibilities aside, there is only one character we have seen in the story who fits the general appearance of the character (except for the miko robes). Yorozu’s original appearance is shown to have long straight black hair in a hime cut, like the woman in the picture

her and uraume are also on the same sides of sukuna in the heian era panel we got

the main counter arguments to it being Yorozu (other than her habitual nudity not lining up with the character in chapter 271 wearing a priestess’ robes) that i have seen is that using her as an opposite to Uraume doesn’t really make sense, but i would like to argue that it does. Let’s look at the connection both of them have with Sukuna

Uraume is Sukuna’s most faithful retainer. (People disagree on if their bond is a master-servant bond, if their feelings are more romantic or platonic but ultimately that doesn’t matter here) Uraume is someone who, according to Gege, was allowed to stick by Sukuna because he enjoyed their cooking, a trait that is not immediately connected to his power or status as the strongest. Yes it’s tied into cannibalism, but ultimately, while Uraume clearly admires Sukuna’s power, they don’t seem to want anything except to be allowed to stay by his side and help him in any way they can. They never try to reach for the position as the strongest, they just become strong enough to be able to stick by his side. It is possible that their bond is partially based on them both being social outcasts in some way (though we don’t know if that truly was the case for Uraume, people have just been speculating based on them seeming removed from the gender binary, but i am not an expert on gender identity in heian era japan).

In any case, if Uraume is considered a symbol of the “good path”, which they seem to be by the implication of “going north” with sukuna, they would represent the unconditional care that Sukuna rejected (from yuji, and in general because of his fear of rejection that Mahito pointed out in that final interaction) in his first life

So then, if the other person is indeed Yorozu, she would have to represent the path of the Strongest in history, the path of isolation we saw Sukuna follow.

The first thing a lot of people think of with Yorozu is her obsession with/love for Sukuna, but let’s dig a little deeper into the circumstances of those feelings.

Yorozu’s love for Sukuna is a twisted and unrequited one, based on her obsession with his power. She does not understand him and he is shown to be unimpressed by her advances and (while there are other, “bath” related reasons, Sukuna refused to connect with her in the way she wants to. She wanted to alleviate his loneliness by killing him and taking the mantel of the strongest and the loneliness that comes with it as her own. Even Sukuna laughs off the idea that her love is true. While it’s not fleshed out on screen/in the panels we get, it’s quite likely that her infatuation with Sukuna started because of his overwhelming power, making her feelings fully dependent on his mantel as the strongest and the path of violence that he chose. Her last act is to give Sukuna a new version of Kamutoke. She, like Kashimo, thought Sukuna was beautiful because of his power, only trying to connect with him through power.

in addition to that, she was acknowledged and appointed by the Fujiwara so it is possible that the miko robes are what she was supposed to wear, similar to Utahime and the whole cover of jujutsu tech being a religious school, even if she clearly didn’t.

so yeah, if south for sukuna is love through acknowledge as the strongest, and north is unconditional love/companionship removed from power, i think Yorozu can represent the path Sukuna was on in his first life

svsss and sexual violence pt. 4: shen qingqiu's body

standard disclaimer at the beginning: i am not saying that this is the Only thing svsss is about, or that other readings are invalid; i am not intending to character-bash most of the characters here (while i will freely admit to thinking e.g. old palace master or qiu jianluo are pretty one-dimensionally shitty, lots--probably most--of the characters in this series who i mention as perpetrating SA are characters who do have depths & who i in fact like a lot! despite this meta, or perhaps because of it, my second-favorite character is luo binghe, and i am in fact a bingqiu shipper!); and, obviously, huge fucking CW for sexual abuse and adjacent topics. this post is a bit under 1k.

(also: shoutout to @rooses40stepskincareroutine for motivating me to actually write all this out, and to @coldwind-shiningstars who this section specifically owes a tremendous debt to.)

okay, so i assume if you've gotten this far in the series you are basically on board with my reading of svsss as about sexual abuse. and there's a very obvious surface read of the corpse body pillow as being A Necrophilia Thing--this is directly stated as false by the text, but the possibility of it, the rumors, the fear, hang over the characters for a long time such that it is worth mentioning.

that said, that's not the primary lens through which i'm interested in looking at it; rather, i look at it on a more metaphorical level. we have two men, one of whom (luo binghe) is explicitly romantically-sexually interested in shen qingqiu, and the other of whom (liu qingge) is heavily implied to be, fighting quite literally over posession of shen qingqiu's body, which is (thru the necrophilia rumors) being explicitly identified as a sexualized object. and when it turns out that SQQ is still alive and has opinions on the matter, this doesn't immediately resolve the fight. something coldwind-shiningstars pointed out here as well is that-- Shen Jiu (who has a history of abuse and the coping mechanisms to match) was cold and mean and pointedly distant from people. Shen Yuan (who....really, really doesn't) is nice, and because of that niceness, you have these two characters who did not like shen jiu falling in love with shen yuan and consequently fighting for ownership of his body!

another point coldwind-shiningstars made when discussing this meta is the point that-- well, shen yuan's discovery that he is a potential target of sexual violence does correspond to him becoming the protagonist of a danmei...but it also corresponds to him inheriting shen jiu's body and identity. to be shen qingqiu, to take on that identity, is to be a body that people fight over. an object. in danger of abuse, at all times. whether or not SJ was sexually abused, he was vulnerable to it & would have been aware of that vulnerability and possibility, in a way SY pre-plot never was; while shen yuan lived comfortably in the modern world, living with privilege and safety, shen jiu was a slave being abused. to inherit shen jiu's body is to inherit his vulnerability. (and when speaking of the corpse... well, while the men are fighting over shen yuan while disliking shen jiu, when neither of them are living in it it's as much shen jiu's body as it shen yuan's.) this isn't perfect--while shen jiu was potentially sexually abused, i don't think he was loved or desired in the same way--but it's another thing i think about. i considered putting it in a different post of the meta bc it's not really long enough on its own but it fits fine here and this is the otherwise-shortest post so it's here. in the same vein, after the water prison but before the bingqiu kiss (and therefore before SY has fully internalized that he is at risk of sexual abuse), shen yuan sees shen jiu in a dream:

But even though his clothes were intact, he didn’t really want to wear them anymore. Though they were on his body, he had an ominous feeling that they could be ripped off at any moment.

and. well. we talked about shen jiu and sexual violence in pt 3? but i think this is....telling.

but. back on the topic of the corpse. i'd also like to draw attention to this quote:

How come no one had wanted him while he was alive, but now that he was dead, he’d become Helen of Troy?

which, well. whether helen was raped or willingly eloped with Paris is...ambiguous. idk if that's deliberate on mxtx's part (my guess is no and she's just referencing the beauty-that-started-a-war) but the ambiguity of helen's consent sure does add something here imo. (btw: i welcome my classicist svsss fan mutuals to weigh in on this metaphor if they want lol, i have multiple of these and definitely have less expertise there than yall!) but even with the more direct meaning of it that isn't about helen maybe-being-raped-it's-ambiguous, helen is, as a woman in Ancient Greece, more property-of-her-men than a person in her own right; Paris and Menelaus are fighting over her just as LBH and LQG fight over SQQ. She is a beautiful, valuable object, one to be desired--but an object nonetheless. And here, SQQ is in that position--which is, again, a feminized one. He's comparing himself to a beautiful woman because that's the position the story has put him in! It's less extreme in some ways, in that when he does reveal himself as alive and agrees to go with Luo Binghe, he is able to convince the other peak lords to let him and not continue the war that he is trying to end--but many of the people there do disagree and need to be convinced. (Which is honestly fair of them, given the context, but it's still notable to me?)

[EDIT: i've been informed by @rooses40stepskincareroutine that this entire sentence/reference was added by the translator. alas! i do still think it's a very fun sentence given SQQ's position here but, uh, ignore a lot of this section; i wouldn't have included it if i knew this, but i'm leaving it in for posterity. afaik, the stuff before this quote still stands. such are the perils of doing close reading on a translation, esp one like svsss that's doing a lot of localization work.]
