Ian and Larry try to figure each other out after hours, with mixed results. (that description sounds so much worse than this actually is, lmao) Inspired by this post by @flamingwildflower! (characters: Ian Edgerton & Larry Fleinhardt; rating: T; wordcount: 2186)
Larry faces the bar mirror, sitting with his chin in his hands. “I have to admit, despite my pacifist nature, I find myself compelled by the efficiently violent workings of your mind.” “There’s a little of that impulse in everybody,” says Ian, chuckling. “Comes down to how you manage it.” Larry suddenly feels more than a bit outclassed. “I don’t think I could do any of that.” “And I couldn’t teach physics,” points out Ian. “Closest I ever get to a telescope is surveillance.”

of places where you thought that love would be found by @margosfairyeye
I’m not much for soulmates, but that means that I’m often fond of stories that start off with soulmates and soulmate marks, then do something weird with it. This is a great example of that subgenre; Quentin has a mark that’s unlike any other (a nice parallel to his canon problem of being a Nothingmancer for so much of his life); Eliot has Margo’s mark. And yet, and yet, and yet. Obviously this is one of those rewrite-the-stars stories; it’s not really full of surprises, but it’s lush and sensual and draws you in, laying out the longing and the edge of hopelessness and then the hope in a very visceral, intimate kind of way. This one really could do almost anything and scrape by on sheer aesthetic quality, but I think what it does is exactly the right call. It’s not terribly long, and I’d love to see sequels; I think it’s an interesting universe, and I’d like to see their in-universe nontraditional relationship unfold further.
* His name is Eliot, he says, and Quentin doesn’t think he knows a nicer name. Quentin can’t stop looking at Eliot’s form, his long legs and the fabric wrapping closely against his chest; but more than that he can’t stop looking at his eyes. Quentin remembers some cheesy quote about the eyes being the window to the soul. He thinks it might be less bullshit that he’d thought.
Quentin watches Eliot’s eyes look him up and down, and he feels excited, and confused, and slightly nauseous. He remembers something someone told him, recently, about how the first time they saw their soulmate, it was like being hit simultaneously with the flu and a contact high. Quentin doesn’t feel dissimilar to that description.
He tries to look at Eliot’s hands, his arms as they walk, but Eliot doesn’t give him a lot of time for study. It’s presumptuous to ask someone what their soulmate mark says, most people consider it slightly personal information (with the exception of people like Julia who just give no fucks). But Quentin thinks that if Eliot has a picture, like his, he’ll be able to tell from a quick glance, and he can’t figure out a way to phrase asking that, anyway.
He can barely contain how excited he feels as they walk, and have snippets of conversation, and his wondering grows into full-on hope. Eliot opens a door and Quentin finally catches enough of a glimpse. It’s on the wrong side of Eliot’s arm for him to see clearly, but Quentin can definitely see a distinct letter ‘M’. So not him, then. *
press your love into my palm by @propinquitous
There are a lot of Mosaic stories in the fandom, many of which share the basic plot of “they have sex in the Mosaic timeline.” And a lot of them are really good! I picked this one because it’s a stand-out example for me; it really just picks up from the moment of That Kiss and just keeps going, so what you’re going to get is what you expect. But I just think it’s so beautifully done, the sweet edges of humor, Quentin’s shivery, hopeful boldness, Eliot being so blown away at how much he’s sold Quentin short in his mind. I love a story that could seamlessly be canon, and this is exactly that story -- no one can tell me it didn’t happen just like this, because I read it, and I am a believer. Just a blue-ribbon, five-star, standing-ovation They Have Feelingsy Sex story.
* Eliot pulled him in without hesitation. In some former life he'd been embarrassed of this kind of tenderness, save for maybe with Margo. It was always in him, though, and Quentin had been tugging at its thread for years. He'd almost completely unraveled in the time they'd spent working on the mosaic; every night that Quentin spent curled against him, desperate to quell his fear and frustration, frayed his edges. By the time Quentin kissed him, Eliot felt as threadbare as the clothes he'd arrived in.
Then, after. The second kiss was less chaste, more everything else. Eliot opened his mouth against Quentin's and ran his thumb over his cheek, felt him go slack under his touch. He tested, bit at Quentin's lower lip gently and tugged at the shorter hairs toward his nape. Eliot curled his fingers over Quentin's and he could feel the slight shudder as the arm supporting Quentin buckled and threatened to give out.
"Hey," Eliot said again when he finally pulled away. He didn't sit back and he didn't take his hand from Quentin's face. Instead he breathed in Quentin's heavy exhales and leaned his forehead against his, watching and waiting until Quentin opened his eyes.
"Hey," Quentin finally whispered.
"This conversation is riveting," Eliot said. Quentin smiled then and, Eliot thought, looked almost bashful.
"Well, I mean," he managed to say before he pushed forward again and didn't stop, his mouth firm against Eliot's until he had pushed him back and straddled his lap.
"Should I keep talking?" Quentin asked, running his hands up Eliot's chest. *
Shine Through My Memory by PanBoleyn, @eidetictelekinetic
This is kind of two separate stories in one, covering all of season 4, beginning with the alternate Brian and Nigel identities as they meet and fall in love, vaguely aware that there’s more to their connection than they can make sense of, and dropping into an alternate Monster plotline. I don’t always like s4 stories, just because -- all the reasons and all -- but this is a really good Quentin, stubborn and fierce and heartbroken, juggling for all he’s worth to keep the layered memories of Brian/Nigel and the Mosaic timeline and the current clusterfuck separate and under control before he snaps under the weight of them. It’s a little heavy, but there’s one chapter left to go, and I’m really looking forward to the release of the ending. You really can’t get a more balanced and sturdy combination of dark canon!fic and romantic fix-it -- it’s truly the best of both worlds.
* “Colored chalk on my hands,” Brian murmurs, tasting the vanilla-caramel-white chocolate of his latte but remembering the taste of plums instead. He doesn’t even like plums, which makes the whole thing weirder, because in this not-memory he does. “I don’t understand any of this. Tell me it’s as weird for you, because I -” A long-fingered hand closes over his own, and Brian looks up into gold-hazel eyes that he knows/doesn’t know and sees - all of it, reflected back. “I don’t get it either,” Nigel says, voice soft. “But I think maybe I’m better at just rolling with the punches than you are, hmm?” “I don’t. Roll with, with anything,” Brian says, and his voice isn’t steady anymore. “I don’t know how, my life is a predictable bore and I like the predictable part if not the bore part. But I think you have to tolerate being bored to keep things predictable so. So I tolerate it.” Tolerates a job he hates because teaching is better than a cubicle at a 9 to 5, and because the paintings and the newly-begun manuscripts that are Brian’s only love won’t pay the bills. “I’ve dated the same woman off and on six times because neither of us care enough to say no the next time one of us is lonely enough to offer, there’s been a man or two in the off points but no one. Nothing like -”
My dreams make no sense, and I feel more in them than I’ve felt in years. It’s not something he can say out loud, though. *
Veins Fit to Bursting by @amagpie
It’s a Buffy the Vampire Slayer fusion! It’s a REALLY GOOD SMART WONDERFUL Buffy fusion! Everyone kind of maps onto BtVS characters in a clever way, but it’s by no means a remake -- they remain very much themselves. BtVS is obviously deep in the DNA of The Magicians, in terms of layering worldbuilding on top of an essential bone structure of coming-of-age, and this story is just an absolute bullseye in terms of understanding that. Quentin’s general depression encompasses but isn’t limited to his feelings of being the useless sidekick, and Eliot’s transformation from mousy nerd to the undead version of the Champagne King is not only very William/Spike, but it builds this lovely foundation of connection between him and Quentin, neither of whom are living quite the life they once imagined they would. There’s a very quarterlife-crisis vibe to the whole thing, which is perfectly in harmony with both shows, and a light touch to the voice that suits this slightly lost Quentin perfectly -- honestly, it may be my very favorite version of Quentin’s inner voice. It’s early days yet in this WIP, but it’s fully earned my confidence in the first few chapters, and I am 100% down for the ride.
* “Okay, so I guess you could maybe say I’m a vampire hunter. But it’s not like it’s my job or anything,” Quentin pushes out in a rush.
A slow smile spreads across Eliot’s face: scary and genuine. There seems to be real interest in his eyes. Eliot settles himself onto a bench, patting the seat next to him. Quentin settles himself on the very far end of the bench to put at least a few feet between them. He’s down for a chat, not to get murdered.
“So it’s an extracurricular?” Eliot prompts. Quentin chuckles with how close to the truth it actually is, looking away. They do have an official college club to make research sessions easier - the Ancient Sumerian Culture Club . They have a budget and everything - which Quentin submits as treasurer - although it more often gets used for pizza and wooden pegs than flyers.
“More like a duty. Or well, not exactly my duty.” Quentin furrows his brows. “Do you remember Julia?”
“I think so? Your friend, really tiny…?”
“Yeah, so, um, Julia is the slayer.”
Quentin looks back at Eliot to take in his reaction to the news. Eliot’s eyes widen, his hands tightening for a second on the bench beneath him. Something like pride coils up in Quentin.
“Huh,” Eliot finally says. *

Making Chocolates
I’ve been on these workshops, I know what I’m writing about, I also know it’s late, I have 5 pages to type up and the fic isn’t even finished yet. should I blame Logan, Remy, Emile or Roman? hmm...
also I’m English and couldn’t be bothered to think or try to puzzle the american school system for the start bit of writing soooo Logan at least is definitely English in this,
/\/\/\/\/\
All those years ago Logan had only studied Food Technology because his parents insisted that doing 4 A-levels on purely academic subjects would negatively impact his mental health. He’d compromised by swapping one of his preferred science courses for the supposedly ‘non-academic’ course which sounded most likely to include a good deal of science.
Learning about chocolate and the methods of making them in his second year had fascinated him and began the path his life followed still. It gave Logan the passion to open this small chocolate shop where he could make, design and teach all about chocolates and their fillings.
Today was one of his favourite parts of running the Chocolatiers as he had a group of 3 booked for a chocolate training course, specifically the Valentines Gift Boxes. Logan would be teaching them all about the science of chocolate, how to make individual chocolates, how the fillings are made as well as the techniques used to make models of characters or boxes.
“Roman, you keep insisting you need the perfect gift, but do you actually have a valentine to give something to?” A voice interrupted his preparations and had Logan heading to the front of the shop from his classroom/ work room.
Before he could welcome the trio, a man, presumably Roman, was dramatically gesturing. “Of course I do. My valentine is furthering my solo quest to love Myself!”
“Do you wish to purchase chocolates then?” Logan offered, torn between focusing as a salesman or asking if they were the group booked for his workshop. A glance at the time made it likely as there were only 10 minutes before it was due to begin.
The smallest of the trip shook their head, stepping forwards. “We’re here for one of your workshops. I booked it under the name Picani.”
“Ah yes, please follow me. Might I know everyone’s names and pronouns please? I am Logan, he/him.” Logan nodded, leading them back.
“I am Prince Roman, he/him pronouns as well, Dear shopkeep.” The man from before declared and Logan could already predict a headache if his was how he’d act all day.
The person in sunglasses, leather jacket and a pencil skirt scoffed. “You ain’t no royalty, Babes. I’m Remy and she/her pronouns for now, Sweets.” She was carrying a take away coffee and definitely seemed likely to get annoyed if chocolate got onto her outfit, but Logan had taught all sorts before.
“And I’m Emile, they/them pronouns. Do you how do?” Finally someone in the group seemed sane, although Logan did blink at the unusual greeting.
Shaking it off he gestured to the table central in the room. “I’m fine. Please take a seat and I’ll begin with some of the science and history behind chocolate making, including tasting a few of the chocolates I melt to make mine.”
The introduction of the session went smoothly from there and Logan even got them past filling the chocolate moulds and draining them so there could be fillings added later before any adjustments were made.
As he was explaining how they’d make the box he was interrupted. “Can I make a heart shaped box? Oh, or maybe a Steven Universe Gem?” Emile bounced a little in excitement for the ideas and Logan was torn between figuring out the best way to achieve the suggestions or sighing at the unscheduled diversion of the course.
Knowing curves would be to complicated to figure out if they wanted the box to remain sturdy. Logan shook his head. “We need to do fairly simple objects with flat sides. I normally suggest a rectangle but if these gems have straight sides then I should be able to modify the method for you.”
The image he was shown was easy enough to sort out. Discerning how a square needed 3 normally sized edged and then 5 smaller ones that Roman seemed set on making was not so simple. “Are you changing the shape of your box too, Roman?”
“A prince deserves a crown, do I not?” At least Roman had been quiet about changing the box but Logan did need to be aware of what was done. He could only ensure each person went home with something they were proud of if he knew what they were actually aiming to achieve.
“Of course.” Logan nodded before checking on the last person on the course as she refilled the kettle for her 3rd coffee of the day. “Remy, have you decided on the shape of your box?”
Her sunglasses had been brought down again, after being pushed back while working with the chocolate. “Plain old square for me, Babes. We get coffee fillings for our chocolates right?”
“Once the sides of your boxes are on the setting rack, I’ll cover that, but yes that is one of the options I’ve prepared.” Logan nodded, checking the pieces left out in her work space before moving them to the mentioned area.
Soon Logan was indeed explaining the ways each filling was made, and bringing out the 5 he had already prepared. “I would suggest selecting the flavours you like and doing a row of each. If you decorated the moulds differently at the start then you can use that you tell you which chocolate has each flavour.”
“So can I do two fillings in one chocolate?” Roman was the first to ask as Remy immediately claimed the coffee filling. “Like put strawberry and mint flavours together?”
Holding back a sigh Logan actually thought the question over.“As long as there is space for the chocolate to make a base I suppose you could. However I must warn you that unusual flavour combinations are not likely to be received well when gifting chocolates.”
“The chocolates for me, so I can happily satisfy my curiosity.” Roman beamed, being more precise in the amounts of filling than Logan had so far believed he would be.
Emile was quite peacefully filling each row of their tray with the different flavours, including helping themself to the coffee flavoured bowl. “Don’t pout, Remy. Logan made the filling for everyone to use, not just you.” They laughed at the glare that was directed to them, just patting her head.
By the end of the day Logan felt exhausted after working with such strong characters. He’d had to have Remy and Emile working together to make Emile’s box stay standing after they glued the sides together with more chocolate, white to contrast the dark chocolate that made the body. Roman’s crown had also taken two people to ensure it would stick and balance, but Logan had helped there.
He wanted to note down the different shapes the trio had suggested for gift boxes, but also just smiled and waved as they left, all thrilled with their finished products.

Thoughts on Endgame
Hey everyone else had an opinion, I thought I’d try having one too!
Spoilers Follow
Honestly, sometimes it feels a little like everything is on fire whenever I stroll into the fandom and I’ve just got a dopey grin on my face as everyone runs around screaming.
I came out of the theatre having had a good time and pleased that certain things were tied off nicely for certain characters. I like the Russos fine but have wanted them to show more personal flair in their work. In this film, in particular, the second act, I thought they really did - there was a lovely, meandering quality to the film that allowed for a lot of humour and fun character beats. It was unexpected and felt like - well, Community (also nice to see those cameos, I loved that show). I really hope to see more of that quirky sense of pathos and fun in their future work.
This ended up being more a celebration of what the MCU’s accomplished so far than necessarily a finale for all of that. It was, as I expected, mostly a goodbye to Cap and Tony. I like both characters (though I still have my frustrations with them as well), and I pretty much predicted this ending when I placed my bets in 2017 (Cap finally decides he doesn’t have to be a soldier forever and retires, as he deserves, and gets to be a man again, while Tony finally does get the family he wanted but loses it so he can be the new Spider-Man’s Uncle Ben in that franchise. We’ll see if my prediction of a JARVIS-Tony computer program comes true. Maybe Riri Williams breaks into his lab and he appears over her shoulder like Clippy. ‘I see you are trying to steal all my old schematics. Would you like some help with that?’ You heard it here first, folks.) Best of all, Nebz was even more front and centred than I hope possible. She carried the heart of the film and delivered. I loved her confusion, half-regret and grief at Thanos’ first death (such a great shot, her with his head in her arms) to her final victory over herself. I particularly appreciated the opening on her and Tony, where she gets a taste of what it’s like to actually have a caring dad. It makes Tony’s final killing of Thanos feel more right in the story - the flawed father figure who rose up and put children first above his own ambitions kills the one who always put his ambitions first. That cute triangle game Nebula and Tony played explained so much about both of them. So, so good.
I loved Professor Hulk. I wish we’d seen him come to be - he was robbed of that culmination - but I’ve never wanted to hug the guy more. I think he was a fascinating sign of the guilt Banner had. I really loved how the time jump allowed these massive changes in the characters, that they took some big risks to their recognizability. I found that very rewarding.
The same goes for Thor. My gosh, I loved what they did. I’d bet money that Hemsworth pitched it too, this seems like an idea he’d have. Thor is, of course, my favourite Avenger. It is often painful to watch him sidelined in the Avengers films since the series’ original, more grounded flavour made him an odd player out, preferring to showcase Steve and Tony. He was the unloved member of the trilogy. The same could be said about this film, but honestly Thor is given everything I ever wanted him to deal with in this film. His trauma finally caught up with him and he can’t hide it anymore, and it’s wonderfully heartfelt and funny and sweet and subverts all those ‘paragon of manliness’ tenants Thor has represented throughout history. His strength in this film comes not from being told to ‘buck up’ by Rocket (I loved that his attempt to pep talk and slap Thor into readiness was a total failure), nor from his body, nor, even, from his own mind. Thor gets to run crying to his mum and that’s treated as the healthy and correct thing to do. A necessary thing, even. Frigga delivers the best line in the film (sorry Love You 3000, you get a solid second).
“Everyone fails at who they’re supposed to be.” I think that hits everyone. It certainly did me. The expectations put on us all, by ourselves, our parents, the needs of our age - they are as crushing as a hammer on your chest.
Thor is the MVP of this film aside from Nebula. He gets to show the most range, the lowest of the lows and funniest of highs, in the very same scene and often at the very same time. It’s tragicomedy at its finest, which is what I come to the MCU Thor for. The incredible vulnerability combined with excellent comedic timing made this a performance that stands out in the arc. I was also surprised to see this huge, large, film of the century took time to go back to a sadly maligned chapter in its saga - Thor: The Dark World (my problems with it are manifold but I am tired of hearing it called the ‘worst’. That is not true. I know you all forgot about it, but the Incredible Hulk is still technically in the MCU, and there are plenty of other weak chapters that don’t manage to push their characters’ stories forward at all.) Not only that, but it patched one of my main criticisms of that film - that Thor had no time with his mother and their relationship didn’t feel explored enough. And that Thor needed to cry more. I come for man tears, that was what Branagh promised me and frankly I was getting dehydrated of late. So thank you End Game, I am quenched for now.
I’m sure this will come up in the big long thing I’m doing about the overall themes of the MCU (Dads and Legacy mostly), but this film managed to address some questions the MCU has posed in entry after entry. Thor’s journey has been shaped by his father, and his search for his father’s approval. Sometimes he was found lacking, and other times he realized he needed to abandon that approval to do the right thing, but always he was trapped in the legacy of that father - the mistakes that father had made, and what his father wanted him to become. This film suggests a wonderful alternative to Thor - that he is also his mother’s son, and her desire is for him to be himself first. Once he hears that, he’s able to call Mjölnir - a sign that he also has his father’s approval, after all. No, I do not mind that the hammer came back from the dead for a little fun - it had meaning and significance in its scenes. (Although I still don’t get what’s the big deal of Steve lifting it - it’s a bit a jerk of a hammer, have you seen the list of who else could pick that thing up? Hela, Odin, Thor. All morally gray people. ‘Worthy’ seems to be a matter of conviction, confidence, and desire to act. Not inherent goodness. Eh.) I love that Frigga, long shuffled to the back of the Thor franchise, is given such a key and beautiful moment in this monster film. I love that she gets to be mischevious, fun, hint a little more at her backstory (witches, eh?) and play psychiatrist to a son who really needs her. I always wanted more of these two, and was CONVINCED I’d never get it. I think I’ve died and gone to Valhalla.
Are there a few lines I wish were cut? Yes, there are some unkind words I wish had been altered - they are unnecessarily cruel and reflect badly on the characters who say them (in particular WM - dude. C’mon.) Rocket’s fine, though - that’s who he is (and that behaviour is changing) and he is not rewarded for his crass treatment. It fails. Further lessons for character development - trauma isn’t fixed with violence. Pay attention, Rabbit. There are also plenty of plot holes and weird questions. Why can the tesseract suddenly be used without a device? Doesn’t that mean Loki could’ve teleported everyone to safety in IW? Speaking of, why did Thor not try harder to communicate with Loki or steal him from another timeline? I feel like an explanation was called for. It also kinda sucks that IW ended with Thor avenging Heimdall (awesome dude, I love him a lot, but...really? That’s the death they directly reference in Thor’s big moment? I thought they’d use Heimdall there and have Loki be more at the forefront of Thor’s mind in this one, but he seems more banished from his thoughts than Thanos’ name). But eh, at the end of the day, this isn’t meant to be the ending for either Thor or his brother. That’s the best part. I get to ride this train for years to come, and hopefully many more good things are coming. (Although I’m getting bad juju from every announcement I hear about the Loki series so far, so here’s hoping I don’t look back at laugh bitterly at my past self’s optimism.)
I do hope that when Thor’s story does eventually come to an end that it’s in his own franchise. I feel like ending Cap and Tony’s story here is big and fun and all, but the Thor films began very intimately (somehow THOR might be the smallest film Branagh ever directed) and I hope to see them end that way. And I hope that even with the Loki series doing its own thing and Thor off with the Guardians that the two will be allowed to come back together again for something meaty before the end.
This film did right by my faves, and while it’s unwieldy, lopsided and imperfect it manages to set up the fictional people I care about for interesting things. Here’s to another decade of watching these actors barely age.
P.S. I am genuinely concerned that Eternals is going to hook me. Hmm. I can only hope they don’t do the Arthurian Legends or Egyptian Mythology as well. I’ll be sunk.
