HURRICANE IVAN, GRAND CAYMAN, 2004...

In October of 2004, a feral natural beast called Hurricane Ivan scythed across the surface of Grand Cayman, the infamous tax haven located in the Western Caribbean.

Ivan flattened buildings by the score, uprooted palm trees, and deposited motor boats through the windows of a three storey high dwelling.

Swathes of the island were reduced to piles of shredded scrapwood. Rooves were blown off. Power lines snapped like cotton threads.

At one stage, a thin film of water completely covered the famously pancake flat paradise island. The devastation wrought by Ivan was near demonic in scale.

I was aboard the Carnival Conquest, which was the first cruise ship to return to Grand Cayman in the wake of Ivan. These photos give some idea of the haunting, horrific scope of what I discovered on our arrival...

Over the nearly 15 years since #HurricaneIvan knocked down a production platform operated by Taylor Energy Co., the company has claimed that less than three gallons a day were seeping out. . The #CouvillionGroup conceived and designed a containment system that has recovered about 63,000 gallons since March — virtually eliminating a rainbow-colored slick that has stretched as far as 21 miles. The government is relying on Couvillion to contain the spill and recover some of the oil. And the amount they have captured so far is proving Taylor Energy wrong. . My Apocalypse for Puck Apocalypse. 

Once when I was 13/14 me and my best friend at the time drew all over our legs with a biro pen and then went out in shorts. It was Summer and we were at the seaside in Rimini. We mostly did it cause having someone drawing on you is very pleasant. We were young, very young, and we didn’t have the internet.

My favorite seafood restaurant in Pensacola, Ryan's Catch, used to be located right in between these two apartment buildings. It was destroyed during Ivan and they never re-opened. It's a shame, it was a very good restaurant. #RyansCatch #Pensacola #Florida #HurricaneIvan (at Southwind Marina)
