Part 2: Hideous Zippleback

Flying this dragon alone is a challenge for those who don't know how. I mean, you think 'two dragons because of two brains', right?

If you know the right ways to do it, you can probably make it work.

Maybe you grew up with the loyal dragons. Perhaps you just know the commands.

Either way, you can absolutely use hand signals to get their attention.

They're very good at following commands, as long as you're clear.

Always feed them at the same time.

Pay attention to both at the same time.

Try not to have a favorite head.

Honestly, you're probably not quite as group-based. These dragons hunt alone in the wild.

They do spend most of their time on the ground.

Decent runners, when they're in a clearing.

You can get the gas in a vial and make a wicked weapon.

If you were with the riders, you'd be first line of defense. The explosions can make a path, the main path of destruction, while the others wrap it up. If you can follow commands, it helps.

You would have to detail your dragons scales sometimes. Clean them up really pretty.

Try using two names that can be combined smoothly into one for easier time yelling.

After an attack, the hideous zippleback landed, settling on the ground. The left head growled, the right whining as it looked at its wing. A scratch that would have to be stitched up near the edge. Getting the supplies, you got to work.

Watchtowers were down, causing everyone to look in dismay. It would take all day to rebuild them. Snotlout huffed, "That should have gone better. Our first line needs upgrades! We can't have some weakling leading it when they can't do it right. They even got their dragon hurt."

Everyone started pitching in their own thoughts as you kept fixing the wing of your zippleback. The right was licking at its wing while the left glaring a storm at Snotlout. A snarl could be heard from the already miserable dragon, irritated with its trainer being insulted. Keeping to yourself didn't seem to make the air less tense as the loyal creature stood.

A roar was heard before the Zippleback grabbed the riders shirt and dragged the human back to their shared hut to rest after battle, not caring about the disaster the hunters had made minutes before. Settling in their spot in front of the unlit fireplace, warm in their homemade nest, they rested comfortably, enjoying the pets given.

HTTYD Flocking

today on Paleostream we drew HTTYD dragons!!!!

closeups and design explanations/descriptions below:

terrible terror and monstrous nightmare: you'll notice all the dragons arent hexapods, deliberate choice on my end, not much has changed about the terrible terror tbh, it just only has four limbs now, less spikes, longer feet, and a more crown-like horn arrangement.

but ooh the monstrous nightmare lmao, i decided to shrink it down and remove a lot of its spikes, i wanted to make it a sorta chihuahua of dragons, small and feels like it can pick on everything. but relies on its projectile venom to save it. instead of lighting on fire, it lights its enemies eyes on fire by spraying venom from venom glands along its neck, back, and tail at the enemy

for the hideous zippleback, i decided to give them beaks (cause i felt like it) and make it so the double head is an illusion caused by the smaller sessile male who's constantly attached to the female, the female has a smaller crest and horns which makes the male's smaller head but larger features balance out the silhouettes. the male rides on the female's back everywhere being held in place by his claws and her wingtips, i also made the female cursorial because i felt like it again

the rumblehorn, i went for beetle-like wings and elytra-like display feathers, and for the funny i gave it a rhinoceras beetle head, and two toes on each foot

the razorwhip is a really cool design, but i was thinking that it would be a sleek and efficient killer, so i gave it smooth and dark scales that are incredibly reflective, and a parankylosaur macuahuitl. i also gave it bottom tooth-like projections on its bottom jaw

for the whispering death, i made it a derived ray-finned fish because dragons are anything you want them to be (also inspired by Wyatt Andrews' Rodan design). i replaced its eyes with two white bioluminescent display features, and put its eyes where its nostrils usually are and gave it a gulper eel mouth with a loooot of gill rakers to replace the rows of teeth

the red death, i decided to keep its size large, i took a lot of sauropod inspiration from this one. airsacs replaced the posterior two eyes, and i gave it a tail club and tooth-like keratin projections on the lower jaw

we ended with the shellfire, even as a kid i hated the design, at this point i was on four hours of sleep and had been awake for about 12 hours, so i just made an over-sized placoderm with spurs on the side of its head, cause dragons are anything you want them to be

Heyyy a bit different from my usual posts but I've been on a httyd kick lately and you will have to suffer with me. <3 I drew Barf & Belch because they were my favorites when I was little and still are. That first scene with them is engraved in my mind forever.

Headcanon: As well as the abundance of scales dragons shed, many species also lose and regrow their teeth periodically (like sharks) and it's always been tradition amongst vikings to display parts taken from dragons they killed as trophies, but now Berkians celebrate and use things dragons lose naturally. For weaponry (like how the dragon riders used shed scales for their armor) for jewelry, accessories and decoration.

Dragons have always been an integral part of Berk's culture but over the years the reasoning behind it has shifted, now they wear teeth or scales of their dragon's in pride of their beauty and the bonds they share, or for remembrance of the deceased. They put up tapestries and include them in their architecture no longer as displays of their dragon killing prowess, but in celebration of them, their nature and the peace they've made.

They're proud of their dragons, they love them and want the world to see it.

I've been in a "How to Train Your Dragon" mood lately, and I remembered these little guys I did a while back. Some silly little doodles in the style of the dancing Toothless meme. They're based on the dragons I had in the "School of Dragons" video game. The game has since been shut down. I miss playing with my silly little dragons. :(
