as she visibly contemplates,      benny patiently,      eagerly waits by poking the inside of his cheek with his tongue,      because he was totally normal about knowing that he had just asked to spend almost a whole day with mai.      he wasn’t being too blunt,     right?     he wasn’t being too pushy,     right?     was it too obvious he wanted to spend time with her?      …was he imagining things or were her cheeks flushed?      he wasn’t blushing,     wasn’t he?!      and her answer comes at the right time,     his overthinking nature now relieved as his smile began to match her own.     even though hers was prettier.      “     well,     ”     he pauses,     mind barely thinking over his schedule when he was currently cheesing over the thought of actually spending more time with her     —-     thank goodness he knew how to keep his emotions at bay!     “     lucky for us,     i happen to be free tonight,     ”     he nods,     casually dismissing a meeting he’s supposed to be at seven sharp at his agency.      he did hear them mentioning to his manager that they could reschedule it if he couldn’t make it,     anyway…      “     as for the ‘something else’,     i suppose you'll just have to wait and see.     it wouldn't be as exciting if i gave away all my secrets too soon,      now would it?     ”     his tone is light and playful,     matching the beaming mood she had set.     “     but that means we will have to finish these,     ”     he refers to their meals with a nod of his head,     hand returning to take a hold of his spoon,     “     before we can do all that unless we ditch—--     wait,     do you want to try this?     it’s gochujang pork broth,     it’s a bit spicy but i promise it’s tolerable,     ”     once he had scooped some of the broth,     he carefully holds it out to her direction with a hand at the bottom to prevent it from spilling from the spoon and on her,     “      and if you don’t like it,     tonight’s mackie will make up for it,     trust.     ”

she   wasn’t   sure   if   she   wanted   to   admit   that   she’d   missed   this   feeling   —   …   the   giddiness   of   mindless   flirtation  ,    accompanied   by   the   almost   floaty   sensation   that   followed   the   happy   ache   in   her   cheeks   left   in   the   wake   of   beaming   smiles  .   she   knew   there   was   a   telltale   flush   along   her   face  ,   knew   that   from   an   outsider’s   perspective  ,    the   sight   of   the   two   of   them   leaning   across   the   table   towards   each   other   was   nothing   but   pure  ,   undiluted   fresh   attraction  .   it   had   stupefied   her    at   first  ,   how   her   pulse   quickened   at   his   compliments   and   how   her   nerves   felt   like   a   live  -  wire   all   of   a   sudden   …   but   the   more   she   thought   about   it  ,   the   less   surprised   she   was   —   …   being   around   benny   made   her   happy  ,   and   that’s   all   there   really   needed   to   be  .   “   mmm  ,   ”   she   squinted   an   eye   and   pursed   her   lips   in   mock   contemplation  ,   tapping   a   finger   on   her   chin   as   she   pretended  to   mull   it   over  .   “   well   …   i’m   free   tonight   if   you’re   free   tonight   —   if   not  ,   then   whenever   you   say   you   are  ,   then   so   am   i   .   ”   she   beamed   at   him  ,   eagerness   touching   the   edges   of   her   smile  .   “   and   i’m   dying   to   know   what   this   ‘  something   else  ’   is  .   ”
