(2023) I created "Hadez" 's characters in 2005 with another person who was a very close friend of mine. We developed the characters a lot since we loved them so much. In 2008 we entered the old Kodansha's Morning International manga competition (do any of you guys remember it?) with a short story based on our characters, ending up among the first 24 finalists of that edition of the contest! It was a great surprise, I was so young and I thought my adventure with these characters was going to end with that contest... but it wasn't!

In 2012 I proposed my collaborator to start a webcomic with the characters and so we did, we also printed the first self-published version in 2013 but then an italian publisher (Edizioni Dentiblù) proposed us to publish the comic with them. That version came out in 2015. "Hadez" became a comic trilogy despite the fact it wasn't what I wanted for the series...my dreams were greater lol :P I wanted it to be a series, but it wasn't possible at that time. Not for me, not in Italy. And "Hadez" has never been translated in other languages anyway.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hadez's version from 2015 published by Edizioni Dentiblù I had a very hard time with this project at the end: the story is not what I wanted it to be and now even the drawings look so stiff to me...I mean, I guess it's normal after all? Also my life was a huge mess at that time. Anyway I'm now alone with these characters, my collaborator is not into comics anymore and we made a deal. I'm so happy I was able to make peace with my favorite characters after difficult times I had in the process of the comic. I'm finally free to love them again and try to do my best with them. I hope I'll be able to give this project and its characters what they deserve.

With Handala Demanding an immediate ceasefire As Israel's aggression against Palestine intensifies, people around the world are wondering what we can and should do. In Italy, 80 cartoonists drew the backs of their own cartoon characters in a campaign to "demand an immediate ceasefire on all fronts, without flags and united with the Handala". "Handala" is a symbol of Palestinian resistance drawn by Palestinian artist Naji al-Ali, and is still depicted in various places in Palestine. "Handala" means "suffering" in Arabic. The back of Handara still continues to appeal for resistance and liberation. Many people in Japan are also thinking about what we can do. They are taking various actions such as demonstrations, boycotts, signing petitions, and standing for ceasefire. Seeing this campaign in Italy, we planned this project in the hope that we could create an appeal with the cooperation of Cartoonists in Japan, along with Handala, to appeal for the back of their own characters. To cartoonist in Japan who agree, please contribute your characters in the back. Any nationality is welcome, as long as you are a manga artist living in Japan. [Additional Notes]  We began accepting applications on December 31, 2023 and immediately received a great response, and the next day, January 1, 2024, we created a official X (formerly Twitter) account and began reposting pictures of  own character's backside tagged with the #withHandala hashtag. Many people agreed but some of them commented that both sides should stop attacking each other. We will refrain from reposting on this account because there is room to discuss such matters. Because we consider this "war" to be ethnic cleansing / ethnocide / genocide by Israel. However, #withHandala has spread as a much larger movement than the three of us had originally anticipated. At the same time, #withHandala has become a big swell that has left our hands. While we respect the wishes of those who agree with the purpose of the #withHandala, we plan to repost mainly "pictures" related to the #withHandala. When we compile the collected drawings, we will mainly select works by professional cartoonists or similar artists, as was our original plan. Please understand that this may be an arbitrary decision. Thank you for your continued support. Italian publisher Eris Edizioni URL ※You can read Naji Al-Ali's books published in Italy in PDF format from this site. Campaign introduction site URL in Italy Naji al-Ali was a Palestinian cartoonist, noted for the political criticism of the Arab regimes and Israel in his works. Al-Ali is best known as the creator of the character Handala, a personification of the Palestinian people that has become prominent symbol of Palestinian nationalism and resistance. One of the best-known cartoonists in the Arab world, and celebrated as the greatest Palestinian cartoon artist. Al-Ali drew over 40,000 cartoons, often reflecting Palestinian and Arab public opinion and offering sharply critical commentaries on Palestinian and Arab politics and political leaders. On 22 July 1987, while outside the London offices of al-Qabas, a Kuwaiti newspaper for which he drew political caricatures, Al-Ali was shot in the neck and mortally wounded.  He died five weeks later in Charing Cross Hospital. He was 50. A Child in Palestine The ruthlessness of Israel, the hypocritical United States, the self-serving Arab ruling class.  Author Naji Al Ali borrowed the perspective of a boy named Handala and quietly and bitterly left Palestinian anger in the form of a single newspaper cartoon. No one who loves hats can resist the wonderful tale of Philip Treacy, the Irish hatter. Born in County Galway to a large family (seven brothers and a sister), Treacy was taught to hold a sewing needle by his village school teacher. With the needle, he has gone on to free the hat from the dictums of fashions and trends, creating sculptures for the crown out of veils, feathers, artificial flowers, straw and gauze, as well as shadows and illusion. "I think and hope I have changed the way we look at hats," he reflects. "They are no longer symbols of conformity but highly individual acts of rebellion. I am constantly challenging the perception of what a hat should be and what role it should play."

"Il fabbricante di bambole. I fascicoli dimenticati Vol. 2" di Mary Burton, Hope edizioni. A cura di Alessandra Micheli
Ah Mary. Come…

Watchtower of China from Leonardo Dalessandri on Vimeo.
Creating Watchtower of China was a labour of love. I say labour because we, meaning my crew and I, throughout three consecutive summers, visited over seventy cities and travelled countless thousands of kilometers. Everywhere we went, we found ourselves channelling the powerful energy of this great land to find the strength and inspiration to continue our quest along what became life-changing for all of us. When we initially gathered together we were a film crew. By the time we were done, three years later, we had become a family.
I say love, because what we have created is more than just a film. It is a declaration of our love for this Country.
When I set out on this project I wanted to create a visual tribute to China - an honest observation of daily life. Not a surface travelog, but a real and raw representation of the cultural history. An honoring of Chinese culture, identity, and the complex and varied way of living that spans the enormity of the Chinese territory. A window on the dedication and discipline, the craftsmanship and hard work of the Chinese people. They have an energy of moving forward together as they draw power and inspiration from a culture that looks back over thousands of years, yet rushes fearlessly towards a bold future.
I started to feel this intense energy, as though this cultural pride and determination were now moving through me and my camera. The experience of this film buried itself so deeply within me that I can still feel the hard day’s work in my muscles.
It couldn’t have come together without the help of my dear friends, especially Jolien Snyers and Ricky Choy (did you spot Ricky in the film? She’s in multiple shots and sings in the very last taxi shot!)
It is one of my proudest accomplishments. I hope you love it.

Staff Spotlight: Joanna Tatro
Joanna Tatro, or Jo, as she goes by, has been an integral part of the George L. Graziadio Center for several years. She began her life on campus as a student and teaching assistant before graduating and becoming a part-time lecturer as well as the Program Assistant for the Graziadio Center. Although we are sad to see her leave her assistant duties, she will continue to teach and is now working on a Translation Certificate. We asked Jo to reflect on her time at CSULB and what working for the Graziadio Center has meant to her:
Tell us a little bit about yourself and your time at CSULB.
I am an alumna of CSULB, holding MAs in French and Francophone Studies and Italian Studies, and I began my teaching journey as part of these programs. At first, class instruction was not my primary goal-I was pursuing a career in translation, and I still am, but teaching has been an integral part of my time here at CSULB and I absolutely love interacting with students, sharing my love of languages and cultures with them and coaching them into their own experiences through study-abroad, majors, minors, and involvement with community organizations such as NIAF, the National Italian American Foundation.
CSULB has given me opportunities I would never have thought possible, from organizing and speaking at conferences to interning for ELI Edizioni publishing house in Loreto, Italy. When I was asked to join the Graziadio Center as the Program Assistant, I was honored to have the chance to give back to a program that has given me so much. How do you think your experience in the Italian department will help you going forward?
It already has! After completing an internship for ELI, I was asked to work for them as their Outreach Coordinator here in the U.S., recruiting for their study abroad program in Recanati. I have also been hired at Long Beach City College to teach French and Italian this academic year, and have joined the CSULB faculty as a part-time lecturer. However, there have been so many other benefits to this program, such as being part of a community of like-minded intellectuals who strive to bring Italian into the lives of our students every day. I've formed incredible friendships with former classmates, who are now colleagues, and the mutual support we show one another inspires me daily. I am also very grateful to have learned from the outstanding instructors in not just the Italian program, but the RGRLL department as a whole. I've learned about different pedagogies from sitting in on their classes. I've been exposed to different disciplines from listening to them give presentations. I've also been introduced to different approaches to the educational experience in general by interacting with all the department faculty. What did you enjoy most about working for the Graziadio Center?
I would say that the most enjoyable part of this work was in working closely with faculty and students, on events, class visits, club activities, and special projects, such as the Telecollaborazione project co-organized with Diego Cortes Velasquez and Elena Nuzzo at Università Roma Tre. I also enjoyed the inter-departmental collaboration that occurred when the language programs worked together, and the support that faculty members showed for all the various events that we hosted.   What are your next career plans and long-term goals? Right now, I'm completing the Certificate in Translation Studies at CSULB, with plans to apply to PhD programs in Translation. I am looking forward to joining this exciting new field and one day, I'd like to teach Translation Studies to others. I also am currently translating an excerpt from a French novel that I hope to send out for consideration as a complete translated work. In short, I plan to make the translation of Romance Languages my life's work. For now, though, I am content to continue teaching language courses and encouraging students to explore other avenues through language study, especially study-abroad. Are there any final thoughts or personal anecdotes from your time in the Graziadio Center that you would like to share?
I would just like to add that it is my hope that I can continue to support this program through my teaching and my passion for the Italian language and culture, and I'm very thankful to have been a small part of what the Graziadio Center has and will continue to accomplish for a long time to come.

Buonasera lettori! Fatemelo sapere nei commenti 💭 ~ #libro #bookstagramitaly #book #leggere #reading #lettricecompulsiva #leggerechepassione #consiglidilettura #leggereésempreunabuonaidea #recensione #bookreview #letteratura #lettureconsigliate #lettrice #reader #ioleggo #booklover #bookphotography #laragazzadellibro #comeanimamai #rossanasoldano #hopeedizioni (presso Cambridge) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ciic-IIMAbe/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Ghosted

"Cosa dici?" chiede Pestilenza.
