Hollow Knight AU doodles

Explanation of AU under the cut

In this AU Hollow is a music student in college, Grimm bring their demon roommate (Only Hollow and Hornet know he's a demon) who studies music and acting.

Pale King is the CEO of a weapons company called Pale Enterprises; he wants Hollow to take over the company even though they don't want to and instead want to be a musician.

Hornet; much like in Canon, is Hollow's younger sister. But unlike in canon she is adopted by P.K and W.L instead of being P.K and Herrah's daughter.

Radiance much like Grimm in this AU is a moth demon, but unlike her younger brother she wants to end humanity. She doesn't care about Grimm and sees his love for humans as weak.

Redstone and Skulk au time!

To start off with, here’s cat!Tanguish college au

(ignore that I don’t know how to draw people holding a sandwich from memory)

Tanguish is a scrappy alley cat Tango found who one day escapes from Tango’s apartment. Tanguish ends up trying to steal Helsknight’s lunch, but fails at first and falls on his face. Helsknight feels bad and gives Tanguish bits of meat and bread from his sandwich bonding them for life. He then wraps up Tanguish in his theatre cloak (he’s definitely a theatre kid + does historical reenactment fights with swords and such) and tries to take him to a shelter or vet or something, but Tanguish spooks when a really loud car passes by and runs into an alleyway. HK almost decides to leave it at that, it’s not his problem, but then hears Tanguish yowling and hissing and the sounds of another cat doing the same. He rushes into the alley and gets Tanguish away from the biggest cat he’s ever seen (it’s the Demon), but in the process he gets a good slash of claw marks across his face.

From there he takes Tanguish to his place, cleans them both up, and from there they have a bunch of misadventures of HK trying to take care of this scrawny, half hairless cat while also trying to find its owner/take him to a shelter/keep him. Eventually, he would find the Hermits on campus (who I am imagining are a more chill fraternity), and comes across Tango hanging out with Welsknight. Tanguish and Tango are happily reunited, HK looks like he got into a fight with a lawnmower the other night, and Wels takes glee in pointing that out while the two (they’re definitely brothers) are unhappily reunited.

Later that night, Tanguish escapes again and follows Helsknight home. When HK discovers this, he begrudgingly texts Wels to tell Tango Tanguish is with him (having not thought to grab Tango’s phone number earlier). There’s probably some joint custody thing that happens and Tanguish gets to eat muffins from two different friend groups now :3

And on the other side of the multiuniversal coin: dog!Helsknight college au

This one is not as fleshed out, but essentially Helsknight is Welsknight’s dog who he keeps on campus, but HK has gradually grown to hate Wels. The coliseum group are all dogs too, and one day at the dog park, Helsknight runs away from Wels. He then stumbles across Tanguish (not a cat) who is getting harassed by these guys he used to steal things with along with other petty crime (not a crowd he wants to be with anymore), and when things get violent, Helsknight jumps in and attacks the guys (except Tanguish). Tanguish freaks out, but is trapped in the alleyway and can’t escape from this aggressive dog attacking everyone, so he holes up on a dumpster. When all the aggressors are gone, HK barks at Tanguish which scares the young man enough that he tries to scale the alley wall instead of get off the dumpster. He slips and falls down painfully next to Helsknight. More concerned if he broke a rib and finding some blood on him, he doesn’t notice HK checking him over until a rough paw tugs at his shirt.

He cautiously lets HK sniff his face and hands before getting up and slowly walking himself home. HK looks scary and is a big dog, but for some reason he has chosen to stick by Tanguish. They get to Tanguish and Tango’s apartment (roommates :3) and Tanguish has to introduce Tango to the Big Scary Dog that saved him and wants to be their third roommate, only to find out the HK is Welsknight’s dog who ran away a few days ago. At any mention of Wels’ name however, HK pins his ears back with a low growl. Regardless, Tanguish and Tango try to take HK back to Wels, and when they do everyone can tell just how unhappy HK is with Wels (he just doesn’t like the man’s vibes). Not knowing what else to do, Welsknight lets HK stay with Tanguish and Tango as a trail run to see what happens.

So yeah, Tanguish ends up with a big scary dog who keeps unwanted people away from him :3 HK eventually gets less hostile towards Wels over time, but still is not very friendly towards him. And yeah, dog versions of the coliseum crew playing in the dog park :3

Last one :) warden!Helsknight au

even less fleshed out than the other two. I like the idea of Tanguish being able to do the shrieker sound, but then thought what if he could actually summon a warden with it?

So Tanguish is an inexperienced witch (maybe, or is just magical) who can do basic ice related magic, but one day he steals from a woman part of a larger crew of bounty hunters or something, and he gets chased down by them. He gets corner in a strange part of the woods and does the shrieker noise three times to ward them off, which doesn’t work until after the third try a tall armored warden!Helsknight emerges from the soft soil and scares off the bounty hunters.

I don’t really have much else in mind except Tanguish sitting on Hk’s shoulders while the two try and figure out what to do in the world (which is very vague I know). I’m not sure what HK’s relationship to Wels is like or if Wels would also be a warden (if he was I imagine he’s been on the surface much longer).

uhhh yeah! If anyone wants to run wild with any of these ideas, go for it! Maybe just mention me as an inspiration if you make something from these, but yeah they are free for anyone to develop further if you wish :)

I actually really mostly liked this for Stiles’ single parent struggles and (platonic) relationship with the baby’s birth mother, the werewolf stuff & romance was cute but mostly incidental.

Where I've Been

Okay, so, 'sup babygrills. This is going to be a bit of a lengthy post, but I feel like I should update followers on here as to where I've been because I haven't been active for, like, months.

If you don't care to read all of the stuff under the cut, that's fine. Here's my TL;DR: I've been having issues with mental illness, trauma, motivation, gender dysphoria (?), and have been busy with college and YouTube/social media stuff. However, luckily my HK special interest has returned and I plan on posting more often hopefully. (Mild cw for mental health mentions ig.)

Okay, so, to begin, I've been gone a lot due to responsibilities outside of making Nyctophobia content. So, up until recently, I've been working on graduating from college. I've been finishing up my final class this Summer, but last quarter in the Spring was really difficult for me time-wise and mental health-wise. I've had a lot of issues with depression and anxiety throughout my life, and being at college was torturous and sapped all of my energy. It did not help that, last quarter, I had to be there at the college for six hours of my day five days a week. It was not easy to make art for myself and my channel, much less for this blog.

Outside of college, and I've mentioned this before in passing, but I also make YouTube videos and, at the moment, YT is my income (alongside comms as well). I've been pretty focused on keeping my my schedule at least a little bit consistent, and that alone has been draining and tiring. It also affects the kind of art that I can create, as I have to draw certain things for certain videos. I've been really weary when it comes to making content as of late, and I really need to take a small break so that I can work on stuff I actually want to work on rather than being stuck drawing certain things for the sake of videos I'm not inspired to make.

Pivoting more into specifics about my mental health, I have been needing to see a therapist for a long while, but I haven't had the motivation or the funds to pursue that option up until recently. Hopefully, I will be attending therapy soon. Last year in, uhm, September I had a particularly bad mental health episode and I've come to realise that some events that happened during that time have left me with trauma that I'm still currently working past and healing from. I've had issues with self-harm, depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, and self-perception for a long time, but in the Spring they were stifling and impossible to ignore. Lately, they have been better, though. So, that's nice. There hasn't been just the usual stuff lately (oh no, that's be too easy), but I've gotten jumpscared with gender issues (hooray, my favourite /s) during this time, and am struggling with my self-perception regarding my gender up to current day. (Hi, I currently go by Rot or Sexy Fictional Bug Enthusiast and my pronouns are they/them, but they may very well be they/he soon). Also, I had a bad identity crisis a couple of months ago and had to do this whole rebrand thing that was a lot of work and it kinda sucked away a lot of energy and time.

On top of all of that, ya boy's special interest metre has been focused primarily on OC stuff and other things outside of HK. It's pretty well-known that I have autism and Hollow Knight is one of my special interests. I'm unsure how it works for most people, but my fixations tend to come in waves and fluctuate (though super special meaningful ones stick for a long time). So, like, I had this whole issue with my mind always being fixated more on things outside of HK. It's been my OCs for a few months, but alongside that, I also suddenly became enraptured by The Owl House and my Digimon special interest sleeper agent returned for a hot second there. As of recently, I've been interested in HK again, but have been afraid to start/work on projects related to my AU because of me having to work on OC content for my channel and also for my friends who are invested.

As of right now, I have some more time on my hands to make the content I want to make, and my HK fixation is back (thank fuck). I've generally been doing a bit better in the mental health arena, but I will also be taking some time off of YT and posting videos regularly in favour of focusing on making stuff I want to make. So, like, expect me to be more active here for some time. I might be finishing a fic in the next month (hopefully) as well, and I have some general comic and art ideas. I just want to draw Auric again, god dammit. My beloved. <3

Anyways, thanks for reading if you did. Just figured I'd make a post about this for people who thought I died or something (and for the people who were once interested in my projects on here and are starving for content, lmao).

Ayesha Tan Jones, Into the Eartheart: Walk, conversation, exchange– The Understory of the Understory

So this is mostly for me than anyone else, but I am posting it as I know I will see it more often as I like looking at my posts. But if you would like to read, then read ahead.

Anyway during the majority of my activity Tumbler, I was studying abroad in Europe. I was looking at my posts and my 5th post, I was in Europe for a month at this point and I specifically remember this drawing as this was the first time I drew with color as I just recently bought watercolor Faber Castell and I didn't bring any of my art supplies to save some room(even though it didn't really help me as I am bringing back two tins of art stuff but whatever.)

Anyway, the point is that it is so weird looking through my posts this semester and realizing that the circumstances I was in when making these posts will never happen again.

And that was what I have been thinking these last weeks here. I won't be living in this particular co-living space ever again. I probably won't go to this country ever again unless I go to one of the anniversaries of the college I am in for the campus that is here. I probably won't drink legally at 19 again(as I am turning 20 somewhat soon and I won't be traveling within now and my birthday).

Now I am left with an almost packed room, ready to leave to go back home.

But I am happy with what I have done here. I have a couple more good friends, I finally figured out what major I may like to do (choosing between electrical or mechanical engineering), and I am more comfortable with creating stuff online-including an Au, which I am a bit surprised about as I am proceeding with my adult life and I still am in the mindset that fandom stuff is meant for middle and high schoolers.

Since things are changing, I am both nervous and excited. All of my friends are a year or two years older than me, so one of them is graduating at the end of the next semester, and the two others are graduating by the end of the next school year-leaving me. It doesn't help that I will probably be a super-senior as I was looking at the engineering major class requirements and I would need to take about 17 to 20 credit hours of classes every semester to graduate on time, and I am on my 3rd semester with an undeclared engineering major - but I may figure something with my adviser.

Obviously, I have my fic and now my AU. I try to work on them as quick as possible as I am afraid I would get uninterested in the fandom and stop working on it. Before getting fully invested in the Hollow Knight fandom, I was in the Skyrim/Elder Scrolls fandom and I was starting to write a few fics before getting into the HK fandom so I have about 30k of unfinished fics. Who knows, I may return to the fandom for a longer period to work on them again when Elder Scrolls VI comes out. But for now, I may just make short fics for ES.

That is my fear, starting something and just not finishing it. But I am glad with the work I have done and I will continue it as now there isn't a fandom looming over the horizon that will take my entire attention from HK (There is Rainworld though, but we'll see).

Anyways, kinda wanted to put this out there. I appreciate every like, comment, or whatever as I know at least someone is looking at my work. Since I will be traveling a bit more before heading back home, and I won't have service, posts may be scares for a bit but we will see. I hope you all have a wonderful day and stay safe!!

APH College AU: Hong Kong

AU Intro here, AU headcanons are tagged #college au musings.

- Music major. However, he took quite a lot of computer engineering and business classes in high school because China insisted (in classic Asian parent fashion), and he still takes them because he sees them as useful for later life (freelance musician or managing a songwriter or something).

- His reasoning for going into music was that it was a relatively cool and not boring job; he wouldn’t have to always be tied to a computer or an indoor office and had more freedom. I think HK kinda hates getting a job in general because he’s got to Do Very Specific Work and doesn’t have time to do side projects/fool around, but he could deal with being a freelance musician or someone who creates background tracks for other artists, game music, etc. Also chose music to spite Yao, because he was expected to do either business or computer science/engineering (but he’s still pretty thankful for taking a lot of business and engineering classes because he legitimately needs them now)

- Soundcloud artist, and has quite a lot of followers. He does a lot of electronic instrumental mixes (idk how to describe it), but also sings sometimes, with lyrics about taking what you’ve got and running with it, carpe diem, breaking away from norms imposed by elders and parents; a mix of hopeful and rebellious. Never writes love songs, because he thinks it’s rather sappy and would rather express love in other (chill) ways. Doesn’t really write sad songs, but there are occasionally ones about rejection and estrangement.

- Re: soundcloud; he really wants to get in their direct monetization program, but doesn’t want to pay for a pro membership. Complains about it a lot to anyone who’ll listen.

- Memes memes memes memes memes

- Trendy™. He knows all the latest fashions and cool things, often tries to brand himself as the one to go to for fashion advice. He gives good advice most of the time (will tell you if your outfit sucks), but also makes questionable decisions (he stripped in the manga because he said Jackie Chen would do it too). Moral of the story, take some things he says with a grain of salt.

- Internet guy (knows all the hacks). He WILL find a free WiFi network anywhere he goes to avoid paying cellular, and knows way more hotspot passwords than he should via word of mouth and eavesdropping.

- Also, his phone is his lifeline. HK: “What do you mean, you’re taking it away from me?” CHN: “You’re using your phone too much; it’s bad for your eyes!!” HK: “No it isn’t! My eyes are fine; you’re the only one who has contacts in this family!! Give it back Yao!!!”

- Routinely called by other students to fix their computers and stuff, charges 25-75 dollars on average per fix. He is such a stickler with prices and absolutely refuses to go lower than a certain price. When Netherlands comes to him for a repair, they’ll haggle for hours and it’s not fun; Leon will postpone literally anything to keep on bargaining and not give up on his offer/price bar

- Avoids 8 AM classes as much as possible, but has never missed the ones he has to attend

- Learned Cantonese to spite Yao. I think Yao would’ve taught all his siblings (the East Asian squad) Mandarin, but they all picked up another language (or dialect of one) somewhere. Leon learned Cantonese specifically because he was lazy and it uses the same Mandarin characters (traditional vs simplified characters but similar enough) but is pronounced different enough that his brother can’t understand most of what he’s saying.

- Gets really whiney when he’s tired, or when he’s frustrated. Complains a lot.

- When he gets really angry, he becomes really cold. He’ll stop talking as much, but other than that he acts almost the same as usual, and it’s hard for people to pick up that he’s mad. However, everything he says kinda sounds passive aggressive, and he won’t laugh at anything. You have to be the first one to acknowledge something’s wrong, and then he’ll talk.

- Re: anger, it’s really awkward if he won’t talk to you because he’s usually really lighthearted, and seeing him serious is rather unsettling. Plus he can end any conversation when he wants to if he wants to make someone uncomfortable

- Is asked to be the DJ for a lot of college parties. He’s the type of person a lot of people vaguely know about because of just one “thing”, the “thing” being that he’s really good at mixing music and has good taste

- He makes sure everyone who even says hi to him knows about his music and his hobby, so he can get popular. Shouts about his Soundcloud profile (it’s not really bragging, but more like advertising himself)

- Types up all his notes onto his computer, but he uses so much slang that his notes read like weird text messages. His history notes read like a giant reality tv drama, because he tends to put things into modern terms and create his own way of remembering things, if that makes sense.

- Hasn’t touched a pencil in forever; he’s so comfortable in the digital world it’s insane

- Buys luxury brands to show off but is also really cheap, and judges certain products hard because they don’t live up to his very finicky standards (read my last post, it’s my take on his consumerism and is more in depth)

- Rather picky with his food, because he has really high standards. He will complain on and on about a restaurant’s noodle’s being too stale or too salty or something, finds flaws in everything when he wants to.

- B to A range grades, doesn’t stress too much over school. He doesn’t mind missing a couple of assignments (as long as they’re not big projects) and makes up for it with his other work

- Delays stuff until the last minute, but doesn’t panic or anything. It’s basically a habit by now; HK doesn’t mind it because it’s efficient and works for him. He can chill for the evening and then get all his work done between 3-7 am

- His relationship with his professors is okay; they all know his name and that he’s the “music dude” but he’s not too close with any of them; he prefers his friends’ company more. He’d get along with fun or young professors better, since they’re more in touch with “the youth” and he doesn’t see them as boomers

- Average at math, kinda bad at science, it’s just not his thing. He does better in the humanities, although he doesn’t exactly enjoy English and history classes. He’s very good at debating though, so his essays and thesis statements are very strong

- He’s pretty functional on 3 hours of sleep, but loves to sleep in when he can

- Proud of his Asian heritage and shows it!! He sometimes shows up at Asian American Culture Club but isn’t very dedicated, because he thinks some of the meetings are a little cringey

- He’d love to have a last name that isn’t Wang (such as any X starting Chinese surname) because he’d love to watch people struggle to pronounce it and he’d love to correct them (in a polite but simultaneously obnoxious way)

To those of you following my Hallowed Rainforest AU, I’d like you to meet Pale Pebbles, the king of the Hallowed Rainforest.

As you might have guessed, his character is a combination of PK from HK and 5p from RW. Although our protagonists never canonically meet him while he’s alive, he still plays an important role in the AU’s story.

Pale Pebbles is a higher being who initially arrived at the rainforest with his can from the eastern sea, alongside his sister Looks to the Rain (whom I will talk about another time.) This was back when the rainforest was still under the rule of the Radiant Light (not to be confused with the Spirit Tree).

After his arrival he worked in collaboration with the Spirit Tree to banish the Radiant Light and build a kingdom out of the rainforest, which he dubbed the Hallowed Rainforest. The inhabitants of the Rainforest were already living in a somewhat primitive society, but Pale Pebbles invented college granted them more complex, higher thought and society once he began to establish his kingdom.

As his kingdom grew, Pale Pebbles began experimenting with the void which came from the void sea deep below the Rainforest, in order to find a way for his people to escape the cycles. He created void constructs, such as the Kingsmoulds, and hunter-variants: more powerful, void-infused versions of existing creatures.

Of course, as we all know, eventually the infection began to threaten the kingdom, which causes Pale Pebbles to panic and make several poor choices, like throwing babies into the void sea and ignoring his sister. I’ll save the details of The Hollow Knight for another time.

The can is not pictured here, but think of it as PK’s giant wyrm corpse but mechanical. A giant, mobile mecha-wyrm super computer. Pale Pebbles has a palace, but the can is where he does most of his work, so he keeps it around and maintains it during his reign. His puppet (as seen above) can detach itself and travel outside the can, usually to make public appearances or visit the Spirit Tree.

Also, yeah he’s still married to a tree in this AU. But he didn’t have babies with the tree cause he’s a robot! Not biological babies anyway.

I don't know if you were already asked this, and I apologize if you were. But, do you have any recommendations on how to get out of art block?

I may have been asked this before and I don't remember, but i'll do my best to give some tips!

I feel like there are many different kind of art blocks? You can be uninspired, you can be physically out of commission, you can hate your own art, etc. Because of this there isn't just one way to work out of art block so let me shoot you a few things for you to try out.

Here's the first tip which is a sort of a blanket tip.

Don't feel bad about being in art block. You're not a machine or an ant. We're humans and we all need breaks no matter what the workaholic era we're in tells you. Your worth is not determined by how much you make in a week.

The worst thing you can do is feel guilty about not drawing. I've gone entire months without feeling a spark but when I least expect it i'm suddenly pumping out 1-2 posts a day. Just sit back and forget about drawing for a while. Sure you'll get rusty, but that's nothing a few sketch doodles wont fix!

Tip numero dos! This one works for me surprisingly well.

Give yourself responsibilities! Take on more chores, get more hours at your job, get a job, wait for summer to end and get homework (if you're still in school), (if you're out of school) take a course, run errands for your family, open up commissions, etc

While I was in school my inspiration knew no bounds. Art block was a fleeting thing because I had other stuff to do that was more difficult than having fun and drawing. I joined the HK fandom during my last semesters at college and I was making 1-2 posts a day for 2 months straight. This was because I had a good amount of homework that I could do but I just didn't want to do.

After college my inspiration tanked and for a while I struggled to find any interest in HK. Keeping my AUs updated felt like a chore. Interacting with asks was draining (this all was probably worsened by burnout after graduation).

But as soon as I opened up my commissions, I gave myself a responsibility to other people, and now suddenly my interest in HK is renewing and I'm drawing my ocs again.

Number three!

Consume consume consume. Is there a show your friends recommended that you watch? Hilda? Trollhunters? FMA Brotherhood? How about movies? How to Train Your Dragon? The Lord of the Rings Trilogy? Aliens? What about books! The Name of the Wind? Dragonriders of Pern? Animorphs?

Your brain might be bored! It needs fuel to make those good ideas. Enjoy media apologetically because you're not feeling bad about art block!

There is a restriction to this tip however! Consuming media from places like youtube, twitter, facebook, reddit, etc, will not recharge your inspiration.

Your brain is bored and watching ridiculous speedruns is super entertaining and fun, but its not going to work! Social media is an expert at giving you those easy happy chemicals but juuust enough so you're not sated and you want more. You'll click through youtube video after youtube video and by the time you're going to bed you're going to feel as grey as you started out that morning.

Stay away from social media if your brain is bored (looking at other people's art and fanfiction is okay tho.)

Those are all the tips I can think of from my own experience dealing with artblock! I may have more buried somewhere under the folds of my noggin but I think those are the big three.

Kinda want a modern!Hk au where Hollow is the sheltered kid, kinda a bubble kid. It’s not even like PK and WL tried to “shelter them from an evil world” or smth. They just.... didn’t socialize them v well outside of their own high society circle. And being high society means they and Hollow have never really done their own cooking/cleaning/laundry.

So Hollow is now in college/the adult world like hmm. I’ve not the faintest clue what I’m doing. Sweet as pie, great dude who couldn’t be more polite, but doesn’t quite know how the world works or how to completely take care of themselves.
