History of Cannabis

Many ancient cultures grew cannabis as an herbal medicine (Asia approx. 500 BC).   It originally evolved in Asia but was soon introduced to Africa, Europe, and eventually was brought to the Americas.  They not only used it for medicinal purposes but also to make clothing, paper, sails, rope, and used as food. In the early 1600s in Virginia, Massachusetts, and Connecticut the colonies were required to grow hemp.  Early hemp plants had very low levels of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the cannabinoid that is responsible for the euphoric feeling.  The early settlers mainly grew hemp for textiles and rope. There is some evidence to suggest some ancient cultures were aware of the psychoactive properties and cultivated varieties with higher levels of THC to use in religious ceremonies or healing.  Burned cannabis seeds have even been found in the graves of shamans from China and Siberia from around 500 BC. In the 1830s, Sir William Brooke O'Shaughnessy found that cannabis extract could help relieve stomach pain and vomiting in those suffering from cholera.  Later in the 1800s, you could buy cannabis extract in pharmacies and doctors' offices in Europe and the United States. Science later uncovered that THC was responsible for some of marijuana's medical effectiveness.  THC interacts with areas of the brain to reduce nausea and promote appetite.  The U.S. FDA approved two drugs that contain THC (Marinol and Syndros) to treat nausea and loss of appetite in cancer and AIDs patients. One of the first written accounts of cannabis being used recreationally was from a Greek historian named Herodotus.  He described the Scythians (a large group of Iranian nomads in Central Asia) as inhaling the smoke from cannabis seeds and flowers. Hashish ( a purified form of cannabis) was often used throughout the Middle East and Asia after 800 AD.  The rise in popularity of cannabis corresponded with the rise of Islam in the region.  The Quran forbids the use of alcohol and some other substances but does not specifically prohibit cannabis. It wasn't until the 1900s that cannabis began being widely used for its recreational purposes.  Mexicans that immigrated during the Mexican Revolution introduced the practice of smoking marijuana to America. Unfortunately, massive unemployment and social unrest during the Great Depression led to resentment of Mexican immigrants and stoked fear of "evil weed."  As a result, 29 states had outlawed cannabis by 1931. The Marijuana Tax Act of 1937 criminalized cannabis on a federal level.  It imposed an excise tax on the sale, possession, or transfer of all hemp products as well.  This made any use other than industrial illegal.  Industrial hemp continued to grow in the U.S. throughout World War II.  The last U.S. hemp field was planted in 1957 in Wisconsin. In 1970 the Controlled Substances Act was signed into law by President Richard Nixon.  This repealed the Marijuana Tax Act and placed marijuana on a list of schedule 1 drugs alongside heroin, LSD, and ecstasy.  These drugs were considered to have no medicinal use and a high potential for abuse. In 1972 a report from the National Commission on Marijuana and Drug Abuse recommended "partial prohibition" and lower penalties for possession of small amounts. Unfortunately, Nixon and other government officials ignored the findings in the report. In 1996, California was the first state to legalize marijuana for medicinal use by those with severe or chronic illnesses. Supersonic at around 800 miles an hour faster than any other aircraft, it was an Anglo-French invention and the first aircraft to fly London to New York in less than 3.5 hours.
