So I'm trying to write a historical fanfiction, the plot revolving around the royals and servants living in the castle and I have their roles and some main plot elements, but I have trouble figuring out in which age this is set, the technological advancement and style of the world and the situation of the royalties with the political situation. (I've been thinking about the 19th century) Do you have any tips regarding any of these?

Writing a Historical Fan-Fiction Set in Castle

I'm a little confused by the notion of writing fan-fiction but not knowing the canon time period. Unless you mean that you're taking canon characters and moving them to a historical setting?

If you're having trouble figuring out the canon time period, you can Google "what year does ___canon title___ take place?" Or, "what year is ______ set during?" This will give you a year, or at the very least an era. From there, you can do specific research on that year/era in the location where your story will be set. (see: Researching an Historical Topic)

If you're moving canon characters to a new time and setting, and you're having trouble choosing an era, it honestly depends on the needs of your story.

The first thing it might help you to understand is that a palace is the official residence of a chief of state (such as a king and/or queen), and that castles are fortified palaces. Prior to the 1500s, kings and queens needed to live in fortified palaces (castles) so that they could be defended in case of attack. However, changes in weapons and warfare in the 1500s made the heavy fortification of castles less and less necessary. That is when we start to see the building of non-fortified palaces, such as St. James and Lambeth palaces in England, Versailles in France, and the Winter Palace in Russia. Having said that, royal castles tended to stay in royal hands and continued to be used as royal residences, and sometimes the king and/or queen would take up residence in a castle palace for a change of scenery or because they had business in that part of the kingdom.

So, if you're imagining an ancient castle with gloomy, austere interiors, torch lit passages, brazier-lit throne rooms, massive dining halls, and dismal dungeons, you'll probably want to set this story prior to the 1500s and maybe even as far back as the 1100s or 1200s. After the 1400s, castles are going to be secondary residences with a grand palace being the primary residence. You might find it helpful to think of a king and/or queen who fit into the era you're imagining. For example, if you're imagining something like Prince John in Robin Hood or something like Game of Thrones, you're looking at 1100s to maybe 1300s. If you want something more Henry VIII or Elizabeth I, you are looking at early 1500s to early 1600s. Or, if you're imagining something more like Queen Charlotte in Bridgerton or Queen Victoria in Victoria, you're looking at the early to late 1800s.

Once you know the time period/era it will be much easier to target the specific details of technology, politics, and world. Here are some other posts that might help:

Will we have more information about why Grisha insisted on Eren marrying Orla? Was it a specific decision related to the need to have a direct heir (blah blah, get married, make her a baby, give the baby a direwolf) or any another need, or did he simply decide to plug the hole in the houses contract with another son because he was kinda in mourning too and wanted their life to return to normal as quickly as possible?

Hii! In chapter xii, Of Promises and Oaths, I had already stated part of this!

“My Lord Father grew intolerably strict once Zeke underwent his transformation,” he confided, his words following the tale of the Reiss sisters’ journey to Shiganshina and the brutal aftermath of that unforgiving winter. “He believed all of Zeke’s suffering to be in vain and was convinced that he could arrange an alternative match for him.” He glanced at Mikasa, with the lamplight only partially illuminating her snowy face. “After indulging in delusions of grandeur about joining the Southern Houses, he found what he was looking for. In Hamerhall.”

So, basically, the whole idea was that Eren’s father had these big ambitions to gain respect from the southern families by marrying his eldest son to a lady from the south. The southerners were known for being very centralist and territorial, and forming an alliance with them was seen as a way to elevate the Yeager family's status. His father was all about uniting their house with a southern one, driven purely by aspirations of greatness.

Now, as for why Eren ended up marrying Orla when Zeke "died," it all ties back to medieval marriage practices. Back in the Middle Ages, marriages were often arranged for political or strategic reasons, and if one of the parties died, the next sibling in line would typically take over to preserve the alliance. They didn’t want the other family to feel like the deal had fallen through. A perfect historical example of this is Catherine of Aragon, who was first married to Arthur, the heir to the English throne. But when Arthur died just five months into the marriage, England didn’t want to lose the alliance with Spain. So, they arranged for Catherine to marry Arthur’s younger brother, Prince Henry, who eventually became the infamous King Henry VIII. He’s the one who had six wives, and two of them were executed. He also fathered Queen Elizabeth I, who went on to become one of England’s greatest monarchs.

So, Eren's case is a prime example of how people were often just pieces in a larger sociopolitical game, especially in that period. His marriage to Orla, like many others, wasn’t about love or personal choice but about maintaining alliances and securing power. The same goes for Mikasa. She didn’t really have a say in whether she wanted to marry Eren or not; her fate was decided by the same system that prioritized family alliances and political gain over personal desires.

But anyway, this subject will be addressed soon enough!

Mythology books that I really like are: Percy Jackson/The Trials of Apollo by Rick Riordan, Pegasus and the Flame of Olympus by Kate O'Hearn, the book Greek Myths and Norse Myths.

And of course the Iliad and the Odyssey. Two classics that are totally worth reading, if you haven't read them yet.

Of books, although it is not considered a history book, but rather a period romance, I recommend Julie Quinn's books. Like Bridgertons, which is set during the Regency. Maybe you like it.

When it comes to history books, I don’t have a specific one to recommend. But I would say that it depends on the topic you prefer, whether it's Antiquity or the French Revolution, it really depends.

As for articles, I usually read from a Brazilian site called Aventuras na História, but it's not in English :( but you can automatically translate it on Google, if you're interested :)

These are my favorite series:

Rome: Very good indeed! For those who like the history of Rome and how the Roman Empire was created and a little of the history of Julius Caesar and Augustus, I highly recommend it.

Reign: It's not historically accurate, but it's very good for those who love a royal drama. I remember that when I watched it I was hooked.

The Tudors: very good for those who like the life of Henry VIII and his six wives. There's a lot of drama involved.

The Great: again not historically accurate, but it's very fun! It tells the story of the Empress of Russia, Catherine the Great.

The Spanish Princess and The White Princess: these are very good series that deserve more attention. The Spanish Princess tells the story of Catherine of Aragon and The White Princess tells the story of Elizabeth of York.

Outlander: fits both as a book and a series and I really recommend it. It's not about history per se, but it shows Scotland during that period while a lot of drama and angst surrounds the story!

I watch a lot of historical documentaries that you can easily find on YouTube! :)

I would say these are my favorite series and book recommendations. I hope they please you!

i am 5’4, tan with long brown hair, i am very chill, sarcastic, blunt yet somehow a people pleaser and have a very close friend circle. "they're pretty," james would say as he admires the rings on your hand before directing his attention to your necklace and subconsciously leaning in closer for a better look, "your necklace too," he adores how prettily the necklace sits against your smooth skin, tracing the valleys of your collarbones as you feel a heat creep up your neck to your cheeks. "take a closer look, my don't you?" he doesn't pick up on your sarcasm and takes your words as an offer to lean closer, "JAMES! AHH!" you shout when his breath tickles your neck, "Oh! S-sorry, love,"

v. he wants to go drinking with you and the girls too but you have to explain that its a 'girls night' for a reason; it's girls only so he can't come. he thinks that if he pulls enough sad eyes at you, you'd give in but you remain strong and leave him with a soft kiss on the lips and a promise to be back soon. he's on standby for when you want to come home but are too wasted to even make it out the pub/bar. he takes very good care of you when you arrive home as well as when the next morning comes and you're hung over as all hell. you bet you're being served breakfast in bed with a side of painkillers and lots of water!

vi. james asks to borrow sirius's rock music vinyls so that he can do silly dancing with you and pull giggle after giggle from your pretty lips. your laugh has to be one of his favourite sounds in the world

vii. he finds it adorable that you dance to rock music wearing all shades of pink. it's a juxtapose that he's grown really fond of. now he associates rock music with pink, which is an odd but similarly suitable fit for the genre ⏤ you made it make sense to him

viii. he hates your smoking habit though. whenever he sees you with a cigarette in your mouth, he pulls the cigarette away, stamps it out with his foot and, just as you're about to rain hell on him, he grabs your face and kisses you deeply. "If you're ever feeling the urge to smoke, you come to me and i'll make you crave something else," ⏤ those were his exact words

ix. you and james are most compatible when it comes to cuddling and wasting the day away in bed together, simply enjoying each other's company while tangled up in each other's arms. he loves giving you small kisses every where he can reach but he's found that every time he gives you a light kiss, you seem to want to cuddle into him more and more; he'd be dead before he doesn't take advantage of that life hack with you

x. honourable mention, i also, lowkey ship you with, sirius black. both lovers of rock music, you both sneak away to attend concerts together and he would wear pink with you, he doesn't care. the two of you choreograph silly dances to your favourite rock songs together and sometimes end up dancing in the halls without the music in the background - it's super cute. he teaches you how to blow smoke rings and you're both often seen shotgunning each other before you finally lean in and kiss each other deeply. sirius also can't keep his hands off you, sexually but also innocently as well. he'd make any excuse just to be close to you because he's so touch starved and appreciates how you lean in close and never complain about his clinginess.

U. Undo - If you could go back and change a fic, be it a twist, or an ending, which one would it be?

This is a tough one, because I think I've written and ended all my fics pretty much the way I've wanted to. Has the execution been there? Debatable. But I think if I had to choose, it would be Hell Was the Journey but It Brought Me Heaven, the Invisible Life of Addie LaRue AU I wrote a very long time ago. I'd probably write it with a happier ending, with them finding some way for Ronan to remember Adam after Adam bargained himself for Ronan's life, and with them finding some way to break Adam's bargain with Gansey. I don't call the ending of the fic a sad ending. I always say it's hopeful and they each have their own happy ending in a way. But I could definitely make it happier, though that wouldn't stay true to the book. 

W. Wips - How many wips do you have? What is taking the majority of your time currently?

Five active, currently: The Rearview, Adam Parrish: Botanist 🪴, Yoga-Hockey Part VIII, Sore Must Be the Storm, and some Gilded Age/Belle Époque nonsense that has gotten some pen to paper. The Rearview is taking the majority of my fic writing time at the moment, but I'm rounding the final corner.

X. Excitement - Which of your fics seems to generate the most excitement?

Oh, goodness. Boxes on the Lawn. Good and bad excitement. 😅 It's definitely the fic I put the most work into, and the fic that captures the best of my writing, so I'm very, very, very happy people enjoyed it, and that it got the hits, kudos, and comments that it did. I'm very proud of it. 😌

Uvivu ni tabia ya kupenda kukaa bila kazi maalumu au kufanya kazi bila bidii; hali hiyo inamfanya mtu ajihisi daima na uchovu na kwamba hawezi kufanya kazi ingawa mwili wake ni mzima kabisa.

Zipo sababu nyingi zinazosababisha Uvivu lakini natamani tuangalie sababu kuu ambazo ni:-

1. KUISHI BILA MALENGO.

Kati ya kitu hatari kinachomtawala mvivu ni kuishi bila malengo maalum. Ni mtu ambaye haoni mbele yake na umuhimu wake. Hapa wapo watu wa aina 2.

...... MTU ANAYEISHI TU - hata ukimuuliza Kwanini unaishi, Hajui kwanini anaishi ilimradi kukuche tu.

...... MTU ANAYEPANGA MALENGO MENGI na KUYAACHA YAJIENDESHE - mtu huyu sio kwamba hapangi malengo, anapangilia vizuri kwenye maandishi au kokote pale lakini hana utendaji anaacha yenyewe yajikamilishe (Hatafuti maarifa juu ya lengo lake, hana bidii nalo)

Wote hawa wanaishi bila malengo na kwa sababu hiyo hakuna sababu ya bidii, kuweka akiba wanaona na kesho nitapata tu hata kama wakifanya kazi wanahitaji usimamizi mkali, hawajisimamii wenyewe.

.....Ewe mvivu, mwendee CHUNGU, Zitafakari njia zake ukapate hekima.
