1. Top 3 favorite female characters?

oh my gosh ok this is very hard to narrow down so i might have to do it by show (the shows i’ve seen all of at least)

dr. beverly crusher

she genuinely cares about People, people in general, and she’s fully willing to pull rank on picard when he’s not making time to get his heart.. surgery.. thing. she’s just very competent and good at her job and the show does a solid job of remembering that. 

also fun fact the actress gates mcfadden was a stickler for accuracy so she’s a big part of why there are set buttons for set functions on tricorders bc she wanted to know what she was doing with the prop

deanna troi

someone the show.. less remembers as being a Talented Professional. 

i do like that in the star trek future they make having a dedicated mental health professional on their exploration ship a priority, and when marina sirtis got Real Plots she was Spectacular. in a later season she goes thru all these tests to get a starfleet rank and a proper starfleet uniform and a) the episode is beautiful and b) marina sirtis has talked about how hard she fought to get that arc, it was abt her character being respected as an officer and also not wearing the Sexy Costumes anymore, and it obviously sucks that she had to campaign so hard for it? but it makes that episode feel even more triumphant

unfortunately she’s a classic example of star trek ladies making requests to the writers for like, more time off, and the writers responding by writing them right the fuck off the show, in this case w a very ignoble (spoilers!) death. 

she was absolutely an icon tho, a cool lady w short hair and a raw as fuck backstory whos job was to fight

her funeral and all the kind words the characters hav abt her makes me cry every time i see it 

((hey really unfun fact: denise crosby actually auditioned to be deanna troi but the ppl making the show swapped her and marina sirtis bc she “”didn’t have the right body type”” fuk u))

HOLY SHIT WHAT A BADASS. 

the trill are super cool in general and jadzia was a really neat presentation of that bc she had this great history of like, being a cantankerous old dude, and that’s still very much a part of who she is 

(ben calling her “old man,” her fuckin Bloody Revenge Quest w her old klingon buds). she also has a smile that warms my heart bc dax is very old but still has this sense of joy in small everyday life things and in People

also she keeps tryna hook kira up w that one alien captain w a transparent head and thats great

ok so she’s maybe a weird choice bc she is not a major character but i really like this cool lady who’s into plants? she just seems really neat and the one or two episodes she played a big role in i recall liking (one maybe there was a scary doppelganger? its been a few years). also at some point her and miles and kira were in a very polya relationship and that was just a good storyline

kira nerys

the small butch,, following in tasha’s glorious footsteps. 

i’m so into her “fight me” vibe straight out the gate, and she’s a really neat window into the bajoran world and culture. 

imo she’s got a lot of depth, this chaotic good’s friendship w odo’s lawful neutral is really interesting compared w her intense morals and willingness to very much break the law to fight for them. she takes no bullshit which i obviously am a fan of and also?? raw as fuck backstory?? 

she was a freedom fighter against oppressors tryna colonise her planet and she was very fucking badass. 

the show keeps making her date the most oatmeal fuckin dudes but we all know she real gay

2. Top 3 favorite male characters?

capt. jean-luc picard

patrick stewart’s shakesperean training makes this character absolutely iconic. 

fun fact he signed on under the assurance this’d be a 1 season scifi thing, no big commitment. 

i love how articulate he is, how much he loves his ship, and the fact that he Just Hates Kids ghsdhgsdg. 

that sounds like a joke but i think it’s a really interesting choice of a flaw for your badass captain to have? and the show has some good fun with it. 

hes also jsut,, such a big fuckin nerd. like hes a professional but you can hear how into archeology and history and literature he is and how excited he gets and its very endearing. 

also he larps as a private detective and that’s spectacular

hey whats up it’s my brand!! my whole-ass brand. 

i have a whole lotta feelings abt data as no one should be surprised to learn. he’s someone who thinks about and processes the world differently (my boys got a positronic brain) than everyone around him and is always kinda on the back foot trying to figure out how everyone around him interacts w information. 

this is for sure played for laughs a bunch but there’s one Specific Episode that stands out in my memory as being more of an examination of that. 

a crew member is into data and asks him out, and he decides to give it a whirl

but as the show goes on it becomes clear that he’s going off what he’s learned from books and movies and is kinda missin the mark in some major ways. 

this culminates in a scene where she’s upset that he can’t like her the way she likes him and breaks up w him, and there’s just this great moment of data pausing, and then deleting the program he made for their relationship. 

and its just such a great microcosm of how he doesnt care about her the same way, it’s not how his brain works, but he does care about her in the sense of making a program to be a partner to her, and the act of creating and refining that is in itself an act of caring, in some ways more than her attraction to him bc she neededhim to be something he wasn’t capable of being.

cool engineer dude! funny guy ((and he’s nice to data)), plus it’s kinda cool seeing the assistive technology available in the future for blind folks. 

idk there’s no big point he just seems like a neat guy to get a beer w in ten-forward and chat with

dr. julian bashir

HEY IT’S MY BOY!! almost named myself after this fella and i still lov his lil face. 

i first decided i liked this dude when he had a cameo in tng bc he was nice to data (its my BRand ok) but i fell in love when i started ds9. 

he’s got such a good arc from being kinda an oblivious dumbass who says to people’s faces that he came to their home to practice “frontier medicine” and everyone thinks he’s an asshole which he kinda is, but by the end of the show he’s emotionally matured into this guy with a well-rounded life and a social circle, who’s less insecure ((bc of Those Reasons, you know, from season 5 episode 16, the reasons that confirm he’s both trans and autistic and i don’t make the rules)) and who larps w his best friend all the time

(also he looks gr9 whenever they put him in non-starfleet costume)

capt. benjamin sisko

SHIP DAD. I LOV HIM

so they say you can tell a lot abt a star trek captain by how they handle q, and sisko straight-up decks him which proves he’s willing to do what we all dream of. 

he’s also that guy who makes homecooked dinners on a ship w a replicator bc it doesnt Taste the same and who fucking runs into a school rival and challenges him to a baseball game and they learn an important lesson about being a team. he leads with his heart and just has a great laugh

jake sisko

it was very cool watching this kid grow up on the show!! and i love the direction they took with him becoming a journalist, that was a great perspective to have going into the events of the last season (and that mash episode RULED). 

he’s also just a super good kid? he’s got a lot of compassion and cares about what’s right, and him and nog being dumb teens absolutely ruled

5. Episode plot you wish they had handled differently?

hhhh i mean there’s a lot but specifically the episode where they kinda! try to talk about trans people! but it’s in a weird context of this species of agender aliens and then one of them’s like “i’m a girl” and the rest are like “cool we’re gonna prosecute you,” and iirc there’s a weird romance w her and riker too and. it just comes at it from a weird angle so it’s not clear if it’s trying to engage w the issue in good faith

17. What role would you have aboard a starship?

science officer probably. not doing any ship-flying, just analysing the data that come w exploring new space and Learning Things

20. Which piece of technology do you wish existed in reality?

oh my gosh, warp drives would be pretty great for Exploration, but in a purely practical sense i’d say replicators?

(if it’s just for my rp-lovin ass tho then the holodeck all the way)

24. Which character do you relate to the most?

hey look it’s my two me’s (i can’t link to a timecode but the iconic scene i fell in love with is at 1:35 (also bashir’s line abt data’s creator: if you have seen that very good season 5 episode 16 then please, have 10000 feelings))

29. Favorite and least favorite episodes?

oh gosh i really love (as you may guess) ds9 season 5 episode 16 “dr. bashir i presume” it’s so deeply My Shit, and in tng it’s gotta be whatever episode data tries to date in

least favourite episodes are a lot, but broadly are any that do shitty by the female characters and actors bc Yikes it’s a lot sometimes
