In A-level drama we've been working on our devised pieces. I made a playlist of songs that I think my character would like, to help me figure out her personality. The character in question is a 19-year-old woman called Roxanne who is extremely flirtatious and spends most of her time going clubbing and hooking up with men.

Here's the problem. I don't know what music straight people listen to.

Thinking about the unintentional(?) homoeroticism of Silver Age World’s Finest Comics; how sociocultural factors in the 1950s made DC implement strong censorship and make everything silly and harmless so as not to be “inappropriate”; how Fredric Wertham railed against homosexuality in Batman comics; how this resulted in blatant sexism, racism, and heteronormativity in comics. And yet: Batman and Superman were consistently written as, well, pretty gay.

They both have female love interests (Lois Lane for Clark, I think Kathy Kane and Vicki Vale, among others, for Bruce), but in the Silver Age there was a consistent theme that these women were in constant pursuit of the men they loved, but Clark and Bruce always refused the possibility of romantic relationships with them (ostensibly because “crime-fighting and marriage don’t work well together”). The women were present to be The Heterosexual Love Interests, but despite that, the most well-developed relationship in World’s Finest (indeed, its emotional core) was that of Clark and Bruce. Their friendship consistently bordered on the romantic; all their emotional conflict and fulfillment was focused on each other. Plus there’s the fact that Clark effectively functioned as Dick’s second father.

Essentially, despite the systemic homophobia of the 50s and 60s, Batman and Superman were written as each other’s strongest emotional relationships, openly discussing their affection for each other as well as being physically affectionate. Their female love interests were basically there to dispel the idea of homosexuality.

I just!! Cannot believe! How beautifully gay these comics were during a time when the writers were trying to do exactly the opposite!

her parents initially hoped for a boy, old beliefs sometimes difficult to shake, but jihye's birth was no less celebrated. a daughter could still be molded into the ruler who would successfully lead the dynasty into the new century. and so, her parents declared, she would be.

eventually she was called back to the palace. her parents were growing older with every year; it was time for jihye to take a more active role in governing. now it wasn't only her studies filling her day but meetings with the six ministries, state council, and offices along with other executive tasks. her parents were at her side through it all. they were quick to tell her what the correct course of action was and correct her if she, in their eyes, misstepped even if they had asked for her opinion.

all her parents had done was in order to create the perfect empress. a perfect empress would be confident when the throne was passed onto them, but when her parents died, jihye suddenly felt lost. she no longer had her parents hovering over her shoulder telling her how to think and act. it resulted in an internal war within the new empress; she had her own ideas for how to rule but was so used to being "corrected" that she sometimes second guesses herself and her instincts. however, she hid the internal conflict and continued to do so, viewing it as a sign of weakness.

jihye was wary about the invitation to france, preferring to keep to her own borders, but recognized the opportunities it presented. with the conflicts brewing in asia, korea would need allies and jihye hoped to find them.

her only real hobby is painting, and she incredibly talented. whenever she would have some time to herself growing up she'd spend it drawing or painting whatever she could both around the palace and from descriptions or illustrations in books. her parents accepted it so long as it didn't interfere with her responsibilities.

extremely, extremely intelligent. a silent genius. jihye observes first and speaks second, seeing no need to show off or boast about her intelligence. it's her actions that demonstrate her intellect. not only is she an expert strategist due to her military and political experience but she's a fast learner and adaptable. whenever there is a chance to expand her knowledge she does.

jihye was trained to wield a wide variety of weapons. she prefers throwing knives and swords, but does know how to wield a bow and arrow. her parents believed she must be a master of many forms of defense rather than only one. she never goes anywhere without at least one dagger on her person and one of the pins she wears in her hair doubles as a weapon.

is very, very hard on herself. she has high expectations in general of those around her but even those pale in comparison to her expectations of herself. her parents constantly harping on how she could not fail and how even a small mistake was unacceptable led to jihye being a perfectionist with almost a fear of failure itself.

in the recent years, jihye has developed an interest in poisons and began studying and experimenting with them.

her love of books and knowledge has resulted in her expanding the royal library at gyeongbokgung along with inviting various scholars to court.

January 2024 movie wrapped 😁 ! Thought this would be a fun thing to talk about wven if no one cares. This month I focused mainly on comedy and romance because thats what I wanna edit one day. Next month I might focus more on romance and drama.

This month I watched 20 movies total, my original goal was 25 (my current monthly goal) so I fell short by 5. Of the films I watched, I saw 8 in theaters (40%) and 12 at home (60%).

Next month I am most excited for Argylle (looks fun), Drive Away Dolls, and Lisa Frankenstien (February is a bit sparce…).

Neon Genesis Evangelion (SUB) — 8, 16, 24, 26

GAY. GAY. GAY.

For the purpose of this entire post, there will be a focus on the very blatant homosexual themes (agenda) that is present in the episodes that were assigned this time around. 

Kaworu and Shinji are just gay for each other. Kaworu is the antithesis to every other characters (or at least male character) in the episodes we have watched thus far in the very fact that he actually CARES about Shinji. He shows him consideration and care and acknowledgement for what he wants, what he thinks, and what he feels. He is the only one that outrightly actually makes Shinji feel good and actually okay for once, as opposed to always being pressured to be something that he is not, to do things that he would rather not do, and in being shamed for being who he is inherently.

This homosexuality, no matter what sort of bastardization of the subtitling says in the English, in the anime is a complete slap in the face of the ever present toxic masculinity surrounding the war effort and which engenders the entirety of the community around Shinji at this time. It establishes the contrast between what the toxic, heterosexual, and cis-gendered masculinity and the queerness and the ability to possess a softer (queer) masculinity as is seen in the interactions between Kowaru and Shinji.

Ultimately, though, Shinji, in the name of war (in the name of the toxic, hegemonic masculinity) has to actually kill the very person that showed him and allowed him to be something other than the masculine, toxic, and aggressive appearance that is constantly being pushed upon him. He is led by masculinity to destroy the very person that showed him compassion and care, and arguably a way from the constant pressures of the toxic masculinity—this is homophobia at its finest.

Lily-Grace ( or Lils to her friends ) was born in Scotland's capital, the middle child of three. If there’s one thing she can tell you, it’s that there’s no fun in being stuck in the middle. 

She never meant to resent it. Her younger sibling was the baby and could do no wrong. Her older sibling the one they were all supposed to look up to, they set the example. For a very long time she felt like nothing to her family and it was devastating.

Despite this feeling, she slowly came into her own, picking up a keen interest in sewing that she picked up from her grandma. She would often sit in her front room learning cross-stitch, being shown how to make blanket squares, that eventually formed a stunning patchwork quilt the older woman kept on her bed.

She was determined from that moment on to do something with her life. Textiles became one of her most important subjects in high school and she began to make plans for college, all of her spare time dedicated to sketching out designs and putting together patterns. She rarely ever wore clothes from the store by the time she was fifteen.

At sixteen, however, the raging teenage hormones spoiled all plans she had and she found herself falling pregnant with her current boyfriend ( love the idea of this being a Love, Rosie type situation ). It was a case of peer pressure at its finest, her mission to fit in had left her as an outcast to be judged. She chose not to stay in school and instead was home schooled through to her GCSE’s.

The baby was born not long after she turned seventeen and was put up for adoption straight away. She wanted nothing to do with any of it, she wanted to forget.

Her attentions went to her studies then, working her way through college and onto a degree at University of the Arts London. The family having moved to the city when she was three, she’d had her sights set there from an early age.

She continued to work, picking up skills where she could, and then eventually began to sell her designs online. She now has a successful business and a small studio at the back of her town house where she works and does fittings for clients.

The dream is still to open a boutique one day, but for now, it definitely works as it is.

Over the last year or so she’s been finding her mind wandering to the baby she chose to give up, wondering where they are now, what they’re doing. There’s a part of her debating whether to try and find out, but it’s a decision she’s been wrestling with.

I keep coming across articles about the sexuality of different actors I like and it’s been very frustrating because I’ve found at least four that claim actors aren’t LGBTQ+ because they haven’t come out and all of them used terms like “we must assume x is not gay because they’ve made no statement saying they were”

It’s so annoying and stupid, we can’t assume they’re LGBTQ+ because they haven’t said but they didn’t say they were straight either. Now I’m not speculating about these actors sexuality either way because it’s private but the obsession with assuming people are straight unless stated otherwise is heteronormativity at its finest.

People need to stop seeing heterosexuality as the norm, not speaking about your sexuality just means you’re not speaking about your sexuality and has nothing do with what communities and terminology you may or may not identify with in private.
