During these Olympics, I learned that Australia has one-sided beef with the United States especially over swimming. I find this beef weird cause lol Aussies are just American different font & idk most Americans love Aussies 😭.
Anyways, I imagine Kyle/ Australia (I’m using my friend Mel’s interpretation) & Alfred did bring that competitive spirit to the Olympics these games. Also just to note, these two are 1000% friends, and whenever they’re together they get into stupid levels of trouble together.
My Alfred grew up in Massachusetts (he once represented Plymouth colony) so he def knows how to swim. He’s a New England boy at heart even if he now lives in DC.

It’s fascinating to have the rest of the UK bros as part of Hetalia now because the fandom gives us a little peek into how the rest of the world sees the UK beyond just England. Or rather the South East and London, which is the England most foreign media tends to focus on
One thing that tickles me is there’s apparently a big stereotype among tumblr non-Brits that the non-London/South East residents of the British Isles are big into our native languages and really resent speaking English. Which is such the opposite to the average experience here it makes me giggle. I’ve lived all over Britain and - I know, I know, “no true Scotsman” and all that - but if there’s one part of our culture I’m sure of, it’s this
Thinking back to all the years being forced to learn an endangered UK tongue and how we felt as kids vs. the attitude here in the fandom? Absolutely night and day! Yeah, there are still pockets of native speakers and others who are passionate about Cornish or Gaelic or whatever, but the average person on the street? Could not care less. Just happy they grew up, did their time, and don’t have to break their tongues on it in school any more. It’s already an uphill struggle to get kids to care about learning other languages when they won the lingua franca lottery by being born in the anglosphere, but when it’s a dying language endemic to one tiny region or country? Yeeaaahh. You can’t blame most of us for not being interested. Even if other people keep telling us we should be. I wanted to do French or Spanish so badly growing up because I knew those were languages I might actually use one day. I haven’t had a need to use my “native” language even once since leaving school, sadly enough. It’s part of my heritage but it felt like such a colossal waste of time
Whether nations represent their people, their land, their history, national stereotypes, or some combination, is kinda a grey area in Hetalia. But if it’s the people, then the attitude among the fab four in modern times would definitely be: “Oh, my old language? Yeah, it’s interesting, I suppose. Heard it’s on duolingo now. That’s good. Anyway, let’s speak English.” 😆
Ah well, no one said Hetalia had to be 100% accurate. That’s part of the fun

Table of Contents
Historical Countryhumans Books
Secrecy and Deception: The Cold War. Over 50 years of battles fought between two ideologies, sponsored by the two most powerful countries in the world. On one side, the United States of America and capitalism. On the other side, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. And in this standoff of nations, war is not an option. But still, only one can remain. (Countryhumans Cold War)
The Consequence of Loyalty: When Kentucky was sent to the Philippines to prepare for a possible Japanese invasion, he did not expect to enjoy it. However, as he got closer to the Phillippines and when he was eventually ordered to flee, Kentucky was forced to decide between following orders and staying behind to defend the Phillippines for as long as possible. (Countryhumans World War 2 in the Philippines)
The Occupation [On Hiatus, will be uploaded when Hiatus ends]
The Shot Heard Around the World: Thirteen Colonies loved his Father, but after the Seven Year's War, he wasn't sure if his father felt the same way. His Father just needed to listen to him. If he didn't, well, Thirteen and his Father weren't going to be on the same page. Or be a part of the same empire. Because Thirteen could only take so much before he would take drastic action himself. (Countryhumans American Revolution)
A Civil Disagreement: North v South. Free State v Slave State. States Governments v Federal Government. For being a country holding the name of United, America was anything but united. The states still stuck together though. That is until December 20, 1860. The bloodiest fight the Union has ever had is about to begin. (Countryhumans American Civil War)
Dominion of New England: In 1686, Britain decided it was time to unite some of the colonies in New England into a dominion under his control. This is the story of that dominion, the Dominion of New England. (Countryhumans History of the Dominion of New England)
Forget Them Not: The Great Countryhumans Archive: In a world where countries are personified, an organization called the Countryhumans Research Archival Project has dedicated itself to recording the stories and histories of these countryhumans. (AKA an archive of fake newspapers and such that canonically exists inside my countryhumans universe. Just a little fun project to explore different angles of things)
Regular Countryhumans Books
Secret States [Under Editing, Will Be Uploaded when Done]
Wrong Reflection: For about 400 years, Alfred F Jones believed he was the only personification of the United States of America. That is, until his counterpart from another dimension appeared in New York City—cue chaos. (Or my kind of crack Countryhumans x Hetalia fanfic)

A little on the significance of the constellations Canada is viewing. I'm probably reading too much into it but let's go.
Polaris: the North star
The bird - POSSIBLY Cygnus: the swan, but also known as to the Northern cross.
Pretty obvious - Canada is known as the Great White North and the True North
HOWEVER, Cygnus is a summer/fall constellation, while all the others are winter. It could possibly be Columba, the dove, which can be (faintly) seen in the winter. No real mythology as it's a pretty recently named constellation (like 1500s recent) but we do have "Columbia" and/or "British Columbia".
The Twins/Gemini/Castor and Pollux: Okay, so here's where things get REALLY interesting.
So, in brief, the twins implication is obvious. But let's go deeper.
Versions of the conception of Castor and Pollux vary. In some, they are identical twins. But in Others, they are still twins but have different fathers (yes, this is entirely possible).
The awesome thing about this is it would allow for the implication of France as Canada's father (or "father" if you prefer) and England as America's.
Less awesome for me is that heteropaternal superfecundation only results in half-siblings, while I prefer Matt and Alfred as identical twins in my own head canon. Others said that "both Castor and Pollux, being identical twins, were inseparable in their looks and actions".
So, as you will.
They are sometimes said to have been born from an egg (along with their twin sisters Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra). They also are sometimes associated with snakes. Castor is a white star, while Pollux, is brighter and "golden orange".
In some Native American stories, Canada and America are described as a silver and a gold snake, respectively.
Depending on the story, Pollux is immortal and Castor mortal. Regardless, when Castor dies, Pollux is inconsolable and refuses to be separated from him, resulting in their being placed in the sky as a constellation.
They were also associated with horsemanship - cowboys, mustangs, Mounties, etc.
They were described as "blond haired, large eyed, fair complexioned, and well-built with trim bodies". Sound like any Hetalia characters we may know?
(Though I prefer our boys with darker skin reflecting Indigenous heritage.)
As stars, Castor is part of a system of six stars circling a common center. Commonwealth?
Pollux meanwhile, is a solitary star, like our own sun.
Hetalia wavers back and forth as Canada and America's exact relationship. The only thing straightforward has been that they have the same face and don't know who's older.
Tumblr media
There is this strip, take that as you will.
Tumblr media
Finally, the Bear. I'm not sure if this is Ursa Major or Ursa Minor. Regardless, there are myths from all over the world (including indigenous people from North America) describing the constellation as a bear(s).
Obviously, Kumajiro.
Now, the constellation appears to be a bear with a tail. The Oneida tell a story of How the Bear Lost His Tail, in which the bear is tricked into dipping its tail into freezing water until it breaks off. It appears that Canada is telling that legend, which explains why it looks like Kuma is tearing up.

im a little lost on what exactly is harmful about drawing japan in hatsune miku get up? he's canonically an otaku and would like that kind of stuff. it's a silly show and not everyone likes historical stuff
the wording on that post was kinda more in a joking manner, my point was in the tags. there’s nothing wrong persay with the hatsune miku getup in particular, I was just using it as a joking example of the kind of behaviour I don’t really like seeing.
To say hetalia is just a silly show is…not a take I agree with. The very concept of personified nations is nationalistic at best, straight up propaganda at worst. If use them in human or non-nation AUs, that’s a whole separate thing, and not what I’m talking about here. Additionally, POC fans who use the characters/nation OCs to represent their own heritage and history is also not what I’m talking about. What I am saying is to attach certain personalities and headcanons to characters who represent nations can lead to dangerous perceptions
For HWS Japan in particular, the soft boy-ification of him insome fan content is not great in two areas:
1) even outside of the nation context, there is a history in the West of the infantilization and emasculation of Asian men. Which, you know, is racist. I often see Kiku get infantilized a lot in ships with the white men of the show (AMERIPAN, but I have seen it with us too Asakiku fans so please stay alert with the content you make)
2) completely erases what Imperial Japan did
That last part actually isn’t entirely the fault of the viewer, if they are simply taking hetalia at face value (pleaseeee don’t). Because Himaruya himself, at least when he began Hetalia, was a Japanese nationalist. And one of the goals of Japanese nationalists is to cover up all the atrocities of the Japanese empire, often utilizing soft power.
Japan’s soft power image, a lot of the cultural exports like anime “otaku” type beat, was very much originally engineered to change the world’s image of the country. So it’s important to recognize that in Hima’s characterization choice to make Kiku into that.
Himaruya has had a history of nationalist and anti-Korean sentiments. Just look up how the South Korean government banned Hetalia for the depiction of their country in it. Look up MOEKAN, which was an early comic by Himaruya which features a Korean protag whose entire point is to show that Koreans are unjustified and should just get over what Imperial Japan did to them.
Hetalia is not just a silly show when Himaruya’s characterizations are directly impacted by his own political ideas. Without deconstructing the way he wrote HWS Japan is to replicate some of those nationalistic choices that he made.
TLDR: The concept of hetalia is so steeped in history and nationalistic biases that even if you “don’t like historical content” you can’t ignore it. Ignoring it when writing personified nations can lead to dangerous perceptions about history (which you know effects real people, especially the people who have directly been victimized by the actions of a lot of these countries), especially when solely relying on Himaruya’s characterizations, because he VERY much writes the characters with his own biases in mind.

Hetalia D&D 5e/Pathfinder 1e - Part 6 Eastern Europe
I did a thing yesterday. Got on ChatGPT (I know bad mun) and made rough NPCs for my Pathfinder 1e game. And I used every core character from Hetalia. So, I shared with 3 Hetalia fans I follow and was told to share all of them if I did all of them. Which I did. So here we go.

Someone asked me on discord why is Israel’s human name Brigitte Malka Petrykowski.
Well let me answer it for you…
That’s my name. And her name also is based from Ashkenazi.
And before you ask, yes I based her off of me, so this particular Israel Hetalia oc in essence is Ashkenazi . I am aware of Ashkenazi, Sephardi, Mizrahi, and the many other groups of Jewish folks exist in the country of Israel and around the world.
And please do not say anything fucked up to me about how I’m just white and dismiss my blood, because that’s incredibly rude… so don’t do it.
You do not know me first and foremost, you do not know what my entire all entails. If you want to know more information about me and my heritage… then message me otherwise… don’t try it.

Hetalia G8 (+ Canada, Romano, and Prussia) as Teachers (1/3)
Tumblr media
Part 2. Part 3.
~Classes~
Axis:
Italy: Traditional Art. He really wanted an instruction class in the culinary arts, but because his big brother France swiped up the option immediately, he happily settled for teaching the intricacies of art, specifically with sketching and oil painting. Will bring in nude models for “Renaissance Week,” but also does it to have a reason to talk to pretty women and men during work. Anatomy. He really only teaches this as an extension to his art class more than the science of it, again with the contribution of “real models.” The board still hasn’t found out about this predicament.
Germany: Science. It’s not really his expertise or interest, but he has a lot of knowledge on the topic for some reason. This is the one subject he’s lax with his students on because he also struggles with it (even during demonstrations). Technology. Focuses on lecturing about older pieces of equipment for the purpose of “understanding history’s origins for modern innovations.” He only says this because he sucks at explaining and handling modern tech. He covers inventions like the radio and refrigeration, and particularly any piece of equipment he’s had personal experience in handling. This causes the students to moan and groan because most who sign up think it’ll be a cakewalk. That is before they realize the pop quizzes center around what integral components make up a communication device’s infrastructure instead of cracking into some computer software.
Japan: Digital Art. He squeezes the art of traditional inking and watercolor in there as well, since Italy teaches a majority of the art department and Japan was too respectful toward the board’s decision to request it, on top of entrusting Italy to instruct the topics with care. Japanese. Usually stoic when teaching, but there are times when he’s seemingly more gentle-sounding when he talks or looks off in the distance. Most students chalk this up to him having a soft spot for the topic.
Romano: Art History. Refuses anyone else to teach this subject due to his brother teaching Traditional Art, finding it obvious that no one else is allowed to do it because of this reason. Gardening. This was the only way he could gush about his love for tomatoes in a semi-related way during class, but is actually more passionate about horticulture than he realizes.
Prussia: European History. Because he is technically not a country, he is more allowed by the board to teach history in this field due to his lack of current world bias and involvement. The wars are still a sore subject for him and traitorous tears will spring up in his eyes when talking about them, even if he has the tiniest bit of connection to them. He will get passionate about distrusting stereotypes when such events are being covered, defending his heritage more than anything else at these moments. May go into tangents when discussing countries he’s personally familiar with. German. His brother is worse at teaching students this subject due to his lack of patience and method of discipline. Prussia is more willing to laugh about mistakes when it comes to learning languages and happily encourages his students to get it right, even if it sounds condescending. Takes great pride in the language still being relevant to teach as a secondary language for non-natives. Always happy to see willing participants taking in his every word during sessions.
Allies:
America: American History. He forced this subject upon the school board to be taught regardless of relevance and completely refused to let Britain teach any of it in case he tried to “twist the truth to make me look like the villain.” He really gets into the Wild West chapter of his life, the whole comics code fiasco, and various fights for the rights of the people, including the Revolution. Communications. Loves commanding a room and having people listen to what he has to say. He encourages his students to do the same and helps them get over any fears they have with public speaking. May seem like he doesn’t care with how he comes off and how he says things, but truly looks out for his student’s well-being.
Britain: English (ESL/ABE). Absolutely appalled at America’s interest in teaching English and never budges from his stance on being the superior instructor on this subject, despite what his older brothers may say. Gets mildly agitated by what he sees to be common knowledge as a native speaker when a student does or says something wrong. He ends up portraying more patience in correcting mistakes than he lets on with his standoff-ness, not unlike a mother hen would. Literature. One of his favorite subjects to teach and it shows. He also takes it seriously to the point of lecturing his class on properly caring for the assigned books and looking downright scary when a small antic like passing notes catches his eye. It seems he can spot pranks and tricks without even needing to look in that direction, and students claim he has a sixth sense or some kind of insane hearing power for that kind of thing. Whenever he gets to covering Hamlet, he has to physically stop America from hijacking his work computer to play “The Lion King” instead of the live-action adaptation he originally cued to show during class.
France: Culinary Arts. He’ll die before he lets any other country have the honor of teaching the art of cuisine to impressionable minds. While the dishes he presents are mostly his own, a lot of them have real-world applications to other cultures’ meals such as general food prep and ingredient selection advice. Fashion. Was only able to nab this subject due to his devotion in following current trends and either designing immaculate inspirations off of them or accurately anticipating the next fad. If France didn’t advocate for the importance of style functionality, fabric durability, and color theory, then the school board wouldn’t have offered Fashion as a necessary subject.
Russia: Home Economics. His big frame holds a gentle soul, which is why he chose to teach home skills. Topics like sewing and cooking are made his own by delivering instructions on how to do such tasks with things found around the house when the recommended materials aren’t available. Likes covering D.I.Y. projects in particular, and while the board disagrees, they’re too afraid of opposing him on it in fear of being beaten to death, despite Russia’s go-lucky claims of only “beating you all into submission, silly!” Russian. About every student who takes this class gets intimidated by Russia at one point, either from making mistakes or during a normal lecture. Sometimes he can’t help his emotions and brushes them off, but his students will always remember his chilling auras and sudden interrogations at disruptions or ignorant questions. They’re all too fearful to report him.
China: Health. Really focuses on telling students the things that are bad for their bodies, which also includes the mention of narcotics, substances, sexual activities, etc. He’s very blunt about the information he gives, which makes note-taking pretty straightforward. At the same time, the things he covers rarely stray from the textbook to the point where some students don’t bother attending lectures and just study the text instead. China’s never caught onto this and simply calls those students “lazy,” making his tests and quizzes notoriously easy. Chinese. Because he was denied his demand to instruct the history of Asian nations, even with his claim of America getting his way with American History, the board claimed another history class wasn’t necessary. So, in retaliation, China interjects heavy doses of Chinese culture and history into the topics he teaches in his class, which mainly revolve around home remedies, his native language, and other, general facts about Asia as a whole.  This was the closest he could manage to be able to teach a history course on his and his younger sibling’s cultures.
Canada: Math. Most students take this class when they hate the subject but like Canada as a teacher, because this is the only course where students can actually hear him speak through the whole session. On top of Canada's slow explanations, willingness to correct himself, and patient answering, the subject is less daunting as a whole. Workshop. From birdhouses to chairs, the students will learn a-plenty about carpentry with Canada, who really oversees the work and reads from the book. He acts as the text’s voice, really. He does none of the actual demonstrative work for it and is virtually unhearable when the students start working. Knowing this, America’s a little peeved he isn’t in there so he can teach it the right way, or “the hero’s way,” which includes wielding his chainsaw and screaming about Chuck Norris for some reason. This is the exact reason why Canada doesn’t allow him to teach it with him. What his brother doesn't know is that Canada acutely observes his students, who all quickly realize they can't get away with slacking off in his classes. Baking. Canada’s recipe log for this class includes small yet filling Canadian treats, and even some from France and Britain. He instructs difficult and tricky recipes on purpose- wanting to gauge his student’s current levels of skill, patience, and tenacity when they come across a difficult problem. Some students grow aggravated with this method, feeling like they’ve hit a wall or are being treated unfairly, while others feel accomplished or see what their instructor is doing and welcome the challenge. They can hear him a little better in this course compared to Workshop, but not by much; some students wish live captions were a real-life thing when they attend his lectures.

6, 49, and 50 for the ask game 👀
Thanks for the ask!
6: How has Hetalia affected history for you?
Well I've always been a history/geography nerd but I suppose it makes it so now I can't go one geography class without thinking about Hetalia.
49: What is the thing in general that you absolutely love about Hetalia?
I love the creativity of the fandom honestly it's so cool what people create! I love getting to learn about other places in the world from fellow fans using Hetalia as a medium.
Honestly this fandom has some of the best art and fics out there.
The people so far have been really nice and encouraging and I've really enjoyed getting to interact with people.
One of my favorite things is seeing people use Hetalia as a way to showcase and show others their country's culture, heritage, and history. It's so cool!
50: If you could have one wish granted that was Hetalia-related, what would it be?
Compensation for the obsession created by this show about the Baltics through an all expenses paid 6 month trip to Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia.
Ironically though what first piqued my interest about a trip to Lithuania wasn't Hetalia but when I saw what it looked like while watching an episode of the Bachelor. Good job tourist people if that's what you were hoping for. Estonia would never be on my bucket list if it weren't for Hetalia.

when im in college imma write a paper titled something like "the sociolinguistic implications of hetalia characters using japanese dialects in the japanese version while they use 'actual accents' in the english one"
ok but srsly:
english is Dominant World Global Language Hegemon but u already knew that
so basically everyone in the world has spoken it. so now it makes sense for literally every country to have a stereotypical accent associated with it
if the english language was a person and saw hetalia it would take this point to Flex on how much it has absolutely Dominated every language ever
this is useful for anglophones to realize lol
ON THE OTHER HAND
outside of native and heritage speakers japanese is only ever spoken by Weebs
obvs there woud be no stereotypical accent associated with eveyr country on earth. you could get non-native japanese speakers to voice characters in japanese for Authenticity but it would make less sense as opposed to a japanese regional dialect
like look at poland. in the japanese version he has a nagoya dialect, which is usually translated as basically being a "valley girl accent" to match with his personality. in the english version he still uses a really Hip sounding accent, which sounds like you told an ai to generate you a "slavic californian frat bro" because it was funny.
honestly how accents are used in media is really interesting and Says A Lot and shit. (Me transforming rapidly into a media studies major(but srsly i wanna major in that someday lol i actually like it))
like there's So much Precious Social Context in language and it gets lost in translation and i love all of that. it says shit about us!!
like how latinam dubs always try to be Neutral but end up reflecting where it's from in some way. while there's really no need to be neutral with english cuz of dominance of american and british varieties (every english speaker follows british and american norms in some way, especially under influence of education) while spanish dialects have no distinguishable leader
a lot of conlangers have that go totally by them i think lol. like they go for creating The Most Logical Language Ever. i think in natural languages they dont go bonkers about sociolinguistics as much. like alright, alright, i get it, i like weird ass morphosyntatical phonological thingalogical stuff too but that interacts with Social shit on a level that is inseperable from the history of a language itself and the people that speak this shit
