Name-play and symbolism in Harry Potter
Sirius Black: Dog Black the black dog ( Sirius is a star in the Canis Major // Big Dog //constellation, the star is commonly known as the “Dog Star” ). A dog is a man’s best friend ( unlike Peter, the rat, who ratted his friends out )
Remus Lupin: basically just Wolf Wolf ( Remus - roman hero raised by wolves. In Latin lupus means “wolf”, and lupinus “wolf-like” )
Rubeus Hagrid: In Greek Mythology, Hagrid Rubes is a giant who is banished from Mt. Olympus by Zeus and has to take care of animals. Hagrid is expelled from Hogwarts and becomes the groundskeeper- later on he starts teaching Care of Magical Creatures.
Sybille Trelawney: Said to be a descendant of the legendary Cassandra, in Greek mythology Cassandra was a woman with the ability to foresee future and a curse, that no one believed her prophecies. Here’s my post on why Sybill isn’t a fraud.
Xenophilous Lovegood: Xenophilius's name comes from two Greek words: Xenos "strange" and -Phile "love" -> one who loves the strange
Bellatrix Lestrange: Bellatrix means “female warrior” in Latin. She was one of Voldemorts most fierce and loyal followers.
Nymphadora Tonks: Nymphadora translates as "Gift of the Nymphs.” A "nymph," in Greek mythology, refers to "a member of group of female 'spirits' found in different types of nature.” They had the ability to transform/shapeshift" They are further classified by where they were found. In Latin, “nympha” translates to “bride, mistress. young woman” referencing the fact that Remus married Tonks, who’s 13 years younger than him.
Minerva McGonnagal: In Roman Mythology Minerva was the goddess of wisdom, war, art, schools, justice and commerce.
Dolores Umbridge: The word umbrage means offence or annoyance, and the Spanish name Dolores has its roots in the Latin word "dolor," which translates to "pain" or "sorrow."
Fenrir Greyback: Fenrir is a monstrous wolf in Norse mythology. Fenrir represents the forces of evil and chaos.
Gilderoy Lockhart: The Levels of Processing model, created by Fergus I. M. Craik and Robert S. Lockhart in 1972, describes memory recall of stimuli as a function of the depth of mental processing.
Merope Gaunt: In Greek mythology Merope is one of the seven Pleiades, daughter of Atlas and Pleione. Merope is the faintest of the stars because she was the only of the Pleiades to have married a mortal. One myth says that she hid her face in shame because she had an affair with a mortal man. ( Replace mortal with muggle and we have Merope Gaunt )
Lucius Malfoy: Lucius deriving from Latin words, meaning light/bright/to shine. “Mal foy” means “bad faith” in French. Draco is latin for “serpent/dragon”
Lily Evans ( later Potter ) and Petunia Evans ( later Dursley ): Lilies are often associated with purity, renewal and transience, and Petunias symbolize anger and resentment
Alastor Moody: Alastor, an epithet of the Greek God Zeus, according to Hesychius of Alexandria and the Etymologicum Magnum, which described him as the avenger of evil deeds, specifically familial bloodshed.
Quirinus Quirrell: In Augustan Rome, Quirinus was an epithet of Janus, as Janus Quirinus. Janus is the god of beginnings, gates, transitions, time, duality, doorways, passages, frames, and endings. He is usually depicted as having two faces.

I think that a common misconception in the fandom of “Harry Potter”, is the fact that Narcissa Malfoy , was called “narcissa “ , because she is as delicate and as pure as a flower , but that is completely wrong. Narcissa Malfoy was anything but nice , delicate , and kind hearted and I think that if people concentrated when they read the books they wouldn’t misunderstand her character .
Narcissa Malfoy , was born to The Noble House Of Black , and the Blacks , even Sirius and Andromeda , all are a certain way . They are practically royalty , old money , one of the families with the purest blood . Their family motto is literally “Toujour Pur “ , they are haughty , confident , and the definition of celebrities (people you look up to , because of their life style ) for the Wizarding World.
Narcissa is named after a flower , and not a star which is the tradition in “House of Black “, but they also name their children after strong , meaningful characters from Greek Mythology . Narcissa is named after the flower of the Narcissist. The myth states that the Narcissist was so in love with himself that he spend days looking at his own reflection in the lake , but one day he tripped and fell in . He drowned and right there , where his body fell , a flower bloomed that was called , The flower of the Narcissist , or “Narcissi”.
If there is one thing I have learnt about the names of the Blacks is that all of them have a deeper meaning , for example , Sirius is the brightest star in the sky , and is differently called the dog constellation . So of course Narcissa Malfoy isn’t called, practically a Narcissist for no reason at all .
She was always described as pretty , as haughty and rather serious as well . I think that we understand exactly how self-centered she is in the sixth book , when she meets Harry at Diagon Alley , and to offend him and upset him mentions Sirius , her cousin and Harry’s godfather who was killed by Bellatrix . I don’t understand why people think she was “sad” when he died, she clearly wasn’t . Which leads me to her hatred for muggleborns and blood traitors . Everyone thinks that she was so sad when Andromeda left and she kept talking to her ect , but I think that she cut contact just like Bellatrix did . She clearly hates Blood traitors , and while I do think she tried to convince Andromeda to leave Ted , I don’t think that she supported the relationship , or that she wanted her sister with Tonks . If she helped Andromeda sneak around it was to save her peace , for the same reason she helped Harry Potter in the Second Wizarding War, to save her head , as well as her son’s and husband’s .
Since we are in the topic of The Malfoy’s , you all need to realize that when we are young we believe and do what we have been taught . So when Draco says some rude stuff about Blood traitors and Muggleborns , where do you think he learnt those from , the neighbors ? Of course he learnt those from his parents .
Ok , but it was Luscius not Cissa . No , it was Cissa too , why do you think they got married , because of their love for their hair ?
It was arranged , they weren’t in love . While it was never conformed , though I’m sure they chose each – other , even if it was arranged , so was Bellatrix’s and Rodolphus marriage and yet they both had the same beliefs . The Black’s were very picky when it came to their in – laws , there were times that they married each other to not get mixed with unfitted names , so now you tell me that Luscius didn’t think like Narcissa . They were both raised that way , and they raised Draco that way too .
Oh , and also , stop saying that they had an abusive marriage , because I can assure you that a woman as haughty and royal as Narcissa Malfoy , wouldn’t stand to be treated like a piece of trash , because they ( the Black’s ) have learnt from a very early age how important they are , and how to show people exactly how to treat them , and plus Narcissa was smart as hell , if she was abused she wouldn’t have tried to get her husband out of Azkaban .
Narcissa wasn’t a Death Eater , but she practically was part of them . Abraxas Malfoy , her father in law was one of the original death eaters , which means that he used the manor for the meetings all the time. Luscius followed his dad’s footsteps and did the same , so Narcissa knew a lot , plus her sister was Lord Voldemort’s right hand . She was very smart , she could bloke her mind and lie without flinching to the Dark Lord , just to save her family . If that isn’t the definition of a smart person than what the hell is .
So yeah , next time you portray Narcissa Malfoy as a victim, think twice, because she isn’t fragile , but she isn’t just a narcissistic person either , she is so much more .

Honestly I love the interpretation of the Greengrass’s having some Greek heritage (I’m of Greek descent) and it honestly kind of lines up. Due to their surname definitely not being Greek I’d have to assume it’s on their mothers side, so the side that’s cursed.
I also love this because unlike every other character having Roman names, Daphne and Astoria (and Hyperion) are definitely Greek in origin no questions asked. I seriously doubt Scorpius’ middle name is from a Malfoy, and honestly it would make more sense if it was Astoria’s maternal grandfather or uncle.
Daphne the nymph had a connection to Apollo and Astoria’s original form Asteria has a connection to Artemis and Apollo, Apollo having taken over for Helios, Helios having taken over for Hyperion as sun gods. And Scorpius (Skorpio) the constellation also has a connection to Artemis and Orion! All of their names somehow relate and I love this detail.
Daphne was a naiad, a nymph of the river Ladon of Arkadia (more on Ladon later) or Peneios of Thessalia. Famously Apollo was attracted to Daphne and pursued her endlessly until in her exhaustion she asked for Gaia’s help. Gaia turned her into a tree, the laurel tree that Apollo is heavily associated with, and also — and I’m not kidding — was used as a symbol in the Festival of Delphi!
Asteria (the Titanesse of falling stars, prophetic dreams and the nighttime) has a surprisingly similar story, although with a lot more going on. Asteria was — like many Greek women — caught the eye of Zeus. He chased her around a bit until she became a quail, went into the water, and became the island of Delos. Delos is also the birth place of Artemis and Apollo, and Hera had done a very thorough job of trying to prevent Leto from birthing these twins, making it a whole big thing that she finally managed to birth them. So, Asteria has that motherhood connection too, specifically to the sun and moon.
Daphne and Astoria essentially both come from stories regarding a man wanting a woman and her becoming part of the wilderness when he can’t take no for an answer. Make whatever theories regarding their blood curse from that theme that you want.
Hilariously, Scorpius’ name sort of ties into this theme. Most constellations as we know them come from a corresponding Greek or Phoenician myth and Scorpius is no different. Orion the giant was harassing either Artemis herself, some of her hunters, or the Pleiades, and Artemis did not like this. So she created a horrifying monster to kill Orion, called the Skorpios. Orion died, and was placed among the stars to honour his valiant deeds, but the Pleiades were also in the stars and he promptly started harassing them again, so Skorpios (or Scorpius) was also placed among the stars to get this guy to knock it off. Astrologically speaking the Scorpius constellation even chases Orion through the night sky.
This has the hilarious effect of naming Daphne and Astoria after harassed women and Scorpius after the consent monster that’ll kill you if you don’t back the fuck off. Also the fact that so many of the Black family names relate back to Orion (Sirius is his dog, and Bellatrix is his shoulder) should not be missed.
So basically, don’t harass women when Scorpius is in earshot of you. Or, conversely, Delphi leave that child the fuck alone, Scorpius will ruin your day.
(I could say more, because there is actually a surprising amount to analyse when it comes to just these guys names, but I think this is enough for now.)
yknow what the greek greengrass family is slowly growing on me and i think this may be the last nail in the coffin for anything else because i have quite literally never heard a better exploration to the super frustratingly vague ‘blood curse that attacks greengrass women every few generations’ thing besides an ancient magic tied to greek myth. i remember someone else headcanoning this too.
idk how big of a deal this is in ur greek family but in mine names are HUGE and are especially big because its a greek thing to name ur kids after ur parents. like me, and my other firstborn cousins are all named after my papou, and my sister and secondborn cousin are named after my yiayia. so does that mean there was a scorpius greengrass 👀 most greeks i know typically dont have middle names but i guess there are some that do. one of my childhood friends had one for instance, and her middle name was her yiayia’s name so maybe that’s what hyperion is as you said (maybe i am reading too much into it since greengrass is certainly not a greek name so if the curse was greek than that line would probs be very diluted).
also rip scorpius if you were actually greek you wouldve loved kourabiedes. it wouldve done more for you than chocolate frogs ever did.
#scorpius would fuck up greek food just put him next to dolmades or pastitsio or tiropita or spanikopita or FETA CHEESE#its over#happiest little greek boy alive#so off track from the names how did i get here#astoria greengrass#daphne greengrass#scorpius malfoy#harry potter#hp#hpcc#cursed child#ccsquad#astoria malfoy#orion black#sirius black#bellatrix black#delphini riddle#delphini diggory#rewriting#ask

Words: 2,222 words
Warnings: Mention of suicidal thoughts
Series Masterlist
You heard quiet murmurs before quiet steps surrounded you. A gentle pat on your cheek had you blinking your eyes opened before you came face to face with shockingly familiar green eyes and you furrowed your eyebrows.
“Long time no see, Warrior of Anemone,” the voice belonging to those eyes stated as you sat up, glancing around the area you were in. “Seems like you already forgotten who we are.”
“Surprising, since she is the one that knows the myth so well,” another voice spoke and your eyes shifted towards her, meeting gray eyes. “But then again, she is tired.”
“And a foolish Goddess!” hissed another and you winced at the statement before you were pushing yourself to your feet.
“She is not foolish, Hildr,” scowled the first voice. “She would have fallen tired regardless of having a lover or not. Using an ability twice after years of not using it can cause anyway to fall ill. She is not ill, however.”
“But it is worse when one is a Warrior and doesn’t have a lover, isn’t it?” The third voice, Hildr, challenged and your eyes drifted to the first who raised an eyebrow at her.
“She won’t fall to the darkness. The innocence within her is far greater than that, even with a possible lover within her reach,” the second added and you glanced at her.
“What? Who?” You spoke up and you shifted on your feet as the three looked at you. “You can’t tell, can you?”
“You do remember us.”
“I do,” you nodded, “Warrior of the Oak Tree, Holly Tree, and Chamomile.”
The Warrior of the Oak Tree – Amoxtli – smiled, tilting her head to the side in thought.
“While the cub is a possible lover, there is one closer of age and is training alongside you. Someone you least expect. That is all we can say,” Amoxtli stated and you found yourself furrowing your eyebrows.
There were many training alongside you that you wouldn’t expect would be your lover. You only spoke to two of them, one more willing than the other.
“Darya says they’re beginning to worry,” Terese, the Warrior of Chamomile, stated and Amoxtli nodded.
“It would be wise to start waking, dear girl. Be cautious when training and remember. One is closer than you think,” Amoxtli spoke and you nodded.
You blinked your eyes open to feel a hand upon your forehead and Hades looming over you.
“I’m not ill,” you spoke softly and his eyes flickered to yours. “Just tired. Promise.”
“Y/N, how after do you use those abilities?” Pierre questioned as Hades helped you up.
“I’ve used it one other time,” you spoke and Hades scowled.
“You honestly expect her to have used it at all before today? You’re lucky she didn’t fall ill!”
While everyone seemed to suddenly start talking around you, your eyes danced across those bearing witness and standing around, looking bored. Their names came to your mind naturally.
Your eyes soon land on Dark whose eyes met yours with a glare and, for the first time since meeting him, you found yourself shifting on your feet and directing your eyes elsewhere.
“Y/N, are you alright?” Bellatrix asked gently and you lifted your eyes to hers. “Dear?”
“Just tired, Auntie,” you promised and she nodded. “Can I?”
“Yeah. André, can you take her?”
“Of course, ma’am,” André bowed before leading you out of the room.
~
“You want to what? Y/N, is that wise?” Bellatrix looked at you and you shifted on your feet.
“I need my library, Auntie, and I’m the only one willing to have them there. It also allows us to keep watch over the cities while we do this. He’ll-”
“-go for the Monstres first, I know,” she sighed, rubbing her face. “And, of course, it’s wise. I just-”
“We’re Warriors, Auntie.”
You watched as your aunt shook her head at the statement before sighing once more.
“You are correct. You always are. I’ll tell the others.”
“I can talk to Dark?” You offered and she raised an eyebrow. “I know sissy told you.”
“Be cautious, Y/N.”
“Always am.”
“I know.”
You watched her shake her head before waving you off and you took your leave. Trusting the same ability as before, you began to travel where Dark was, knocking upon the door once there.
There was a hissed command before the door swung opening, reveling one of the many entities here – Dr. Iplier.
His eyes dropped to yours for a second before he was walking past you, leaving you in the open doorway.
“What do you want, Goddess?”
You glanced back at the retreating doctor before stepping into the room, ignoring the annoyed look that came with it.
“We’re moving locations,” you spoke and Dark scoffed at the statement, walking towards his desk. “You and your people can stay here but you won’t be able to fetch Wilford.”
Unlike yesterday, you met his glare with a look that dared him to challenge you.
“Where is the location?”
“My place. I need my library and it allows the rest of us to make sure our people aren’t affected by what’s going on,” you answered. “If you wish to join us, I’ll be waiting in the meeting room.”
“Just you?”
“Auntie went to tell the others. Some may stay behind to help me but that’s about it. Once at my place, I’ll be the only God that’s around 24/7.”
Another scoff left his lips and you tilted your head as you watched him for a second before letting out a soft hum.
“I’ll be waiting.”
Receiving the expected silent response, you glanced at Dark once more before making your way to the meeting room. A sigh left your lips as you rubbed the back of your neck, your mind drifting back to the words of the Warriors of the Past.
“You alright, Y/N?”
Your eyes lifted to your cousin’s, watching as a slight frown came to her lips before she glanced towards your sister who shrugged in response.
You haven’t been speaking to them like you once would but you couldn’t find the words to do so, especially after yesterday. You heard two things from the Warriors that you couldn’t explain. One had said that you were too innocent to succumb to the darkness while another said that a possible lover was within reach and the one you least expected. You didn’t expect any of them. How would you least expect one of them after that?
“I can’t believe you’re doing this, Y/N,” Jean-Louis spoke up and you looked at him. “I think it’s a bad idea. Wouldn’t they expect you to want your library?”
“Whether they expect it or not, I need it. I can only disappear to Dark’s for so long before it starts affecting me and there are books in mine that I need that Dark doesn’t have.”
“That’s pretty impressive to hear, doll,” Anti’s voice cut into the room and you glanced over your shoulder to see him along with the others. “Four Gods needed to take us to your place?”
“More like a precautious. While mama is beginning to understand what Y/N is saying, Hades isn’t very fond of the idea,” Juliette answered. “Y/N would feel overwhelmed if it was anyone else helping her.”
“Let’s just get this over with,” Dark muttered and you shifted on your feet, glancing at the others who shrugged. “What?”
“In order to take you there, we have to touch you, on the shoulder. While Angel and I are considered major Gods, we no longer have the ability to just snap and teleport everyone,” you explained. “And it’s best for you to hold hands or something like that so that we can take more than two people.”
“You’re kidding,” Dark deadpanned and you shrugged.
“Sorry.”
You heard him grumble under his breath as he and others followed directions. You glanced at the others once more, watching as they touched the shoulders of a few before you touched Dark’s, teleporting him and whoever he was holding onto to your place.
“What room is this, doll?” Anti questioned as he looked around.
“Many would call this a throne room,” Makaria spoke as she stepped up to stand beside Jean-Louis.
“But Lady Y/N have always considered everyone as her equal. This is her Main Hall.” Your daemon second command, Maxence, bowed and you scrunched your nose. “Lady Bellatrix forewarned me of the plans, Lady Y/N, and I already made sure the rooms were ready.”
“Thank you, Maxence.”
“I’ve also emailed you the norm and made an announcement to the people of Noir about the arrangements but nothing stating why,” he continued and you nodded. “Staff is ready to deal with whatever shall happen with our guests and warning signs have been placed around the River in case they travel down that way.”
“You exceed expectations, Maxence. Take a break,” you spoke and he bowed with a smile playing on his lips.
“Would expect nothing less than that, milady. I shall do as you suggest.”
You watched as he turned to walk out of the Main Hall before a question came to mind.
“Maxence-”
“Organized and clean it this morning. Your library awaits you.” Maxence shot a grin over his shoulder before walking out of the Hall.
“Seriously need you to interview people for me, Y/N/N. I wish my second command did all that,” Makaria sighed softly.
“It comes with treating everyone equally,” Angel butted in. “Everyone willing does everything she needs done because she treats them equally.”
“Has Auntie said whether or not she wants our army to start training?” You questioned, looking towards your sister who shook her head. “Let me know when she does and I’ll help.”
“I got André and Pierre now, sis. Don’t worry about it,” Angel nodded before her eyes glanced around. “I need to get going. Sins are demanding some training and you have some reading to do. Don’t hesitate to call.”
“Same goes here, cousin,” Jean-Louis added and Juliette agreed before you were waving them off and waving another servant towards you.
“Show them to their rooms, please, and make sure you and the others tend to their needs, please,” you spoke, watching as she nodded before you nodded, glancing at your newfound guests. You found yourself meeting Dark’s glare before turning and heading towards your library.
~
“Do you ever sleep, doll?”
Your eyes lifted from the book on your table to meet the glitching entity’s before shrugging, turning the page.
“What are you doing?”
“Studying,” you answered, looking at the page before standing from the chair and walking over to one of your bookshelves. “What do you need, Anti?”
“Nothing to do, doll. Thought to come see you,” he answered and you glanced towards him before plucking a book from the shelf. “What are you studying?”
“Battle strategies, the Monstres, and everything else that’s important.” You flipped through the pages, pursing your lips before putting it back. “Where is it?”
“Anti, what are you doing in here?” Dark’s voice drifted into the room and you glanced over your shoulder once more. “What are you looking at?”
“Careful what you say, Dark. My people aren’t afraid to attack you,” you muttered, grabbing another book and moved back to the table. “Did I leave it at Auntie’s?” Your eyes flirted over your bookshelves before a sigh left your lips. “Maybe it’s in my room.”
“Looking for a certain book?” Anti questioned, ignoring Dark’s annoyance. “Maybe I can find something about it.”
“You won’t,” you spoke, shaking your head. “It’s one of a kind and it’s a miracle I have it. It’s somewhere between homes.”
“Only historical books are one of a kind,” Dark deadpanned and you raised an eyebrow at him.
“Luckily, this book is. It was written by Warriors of the Past.”
“Warriors of the Past,” he scoffed. “You’re telling me that there are Warriors of the Past. That’s idiotic.”
“Maybe but it happened,” you hummed, looking down at the opened books. “It was mainly written by the first-ever Warriors. The Source spoke directly to them at the time because they didn’t have anyone to guide them like we do now.”
“What weren’t you the first?” Anti asked curiously and you looked over at him. “Wouldn’t it make sense for Gods to be the first and last?”
“Because some of us weren’t born yet. A majority of us, actually,” you started, “The French Pantheon wasn’t created until about 1000 BC and even then, Isabelle, Jackie, and Emma weren’t born yet.”
“You have things to do, Anti,” Dark demanded and you looked up at the two, watching Anti stare at Dark for a moment before rolling his eyes and disappearing on the spot. “When is the next training?”
“Most likely tomorrow,” you answered, looking at him for a second before looking back down at your books. “Feel free to read anything here. Just put it back where you found it when you’re done and there won’t be any issues.”
“Issues,” Dark deadpanned and you smiled softly.
“Books are the only reason we are still alive today, Dark. If it weren’t for them, I would have given up my life long ago and throw off the balance the Source is desperate to keep. So, please, treat my books nicely. They mean the world to me.”

Crossover Verses
MCU v: shield
River was born in 1918 in London England to Rory and Amelia Williams. She moved to America when she was sixteen so that her Mother could get published. During the second world war she did her bit and even became friends with Peggy Carter. When she was 26 she planned to marry one of the Doctors that she had worked closely with; John Smith and she did. The pair were married for twenty years with River carrying on to work with Peggy and SHIELD. Then River went missing. She was found trying to bomb SHIELD in 2009 and stopped by Phil Coulson. She had been brainwashed by a cult named the Silence. However one thing no one would realise for a few years was that River hadn’t been ageing since she went missing nor could she remember any of her life before the Silence. She was reformed and became a SHIELD agent once more. She still isn't ageing and it discomforts her more than she lets on.
DCTV v: kryptonian criminal
Mel was born on Krypton, she would have lived and died there if she hadn’t met General Astra. Like her friend she had been concerned about the state of Krypton, she joined Astra in her attempt at a coup. Because of that she got sent to Fort Rozz with her. She was trapped in the Quantum Zone for years. When the ship fell Mel did her best to adjust to life on Earth. To begin with she hated it. She wanted to go home. Kara and Alex helped her to adjust and she currently she works alongside the DEO and is trying to study at college to learn archaeology.
OUAT v: ouat
Cora and Madame Kovarian where friends and so when Kovarian gained custody of her niece, River, it was natural that River became friends with Cora’s daughter. However when River reached sixteen Kovarian moved her to another country so that she could take her apparent rightful place on the throne. She was a puppet for her Aunt just as Regina was for her Mother. She had no magic to bring her own power but after falling in love with a Lord (John Smith) she became more independent something which Kovarian could not allow. She had Lord Smith killed but instead of having River in her place it caused her to rebel and she exiled Kovarian from the country. Over the following years River reigned her country strictly, although never being outright cruel and traveling to the different regions, she did soon join the ‘Queens of Darkness’ by association. Once again this reunited her with Regina. She became closer with Maleficent too and was charged with protecting her daughter. She was sent through the portal with Lily, Cruella and Ursula. Along with the others she decided it wouldn’t be best for them to take the child but she still looked after Lily from afar working in a security company to get an income. Following Lily soon brought her to Storybrooke where she now stays.
HARRY POTTER v: hogwarts
River was born into a pure blood family. River didn’t know her maternal family, they had ostracised Amy after it became clear she would have nothing to do with their views on blood lineage. Her Mother’s Aunt (River’s great Aunt) was a death eater and could see the power that the child held. She took her from them and killed the pair before raising River as her own. Years later River was sorted into the Slytherin House she was in the same year as Lily Evans and they became friends despite the house difference. During her time at Hogwarts she met a young wizard named John Smith; the two did not immediately get along as she felt he was someone who judged her for her Aunts beliefs. However soon in a class they were sat together and soon realised that they had many of the same likes (Care of Mythical Creatures) and dislikes (blood discrimination) and grew closer; especially during their O.W.L.s where River’s talent for herbology and John’s for others meant they could help each other. After they left Hogwarts River and John married but during the First Wizarding War John was killed and tortured by Bellatrix along with the Longbottoms; his ghost still wanders Hogwarts. River was pregnant when he died but did not have the child, it was a big taboo for her family and she was then ostracised as well. If any John’s (doctor’s) would like to rp in this verse then he would not have died or would be the ghost, if any OC children would like to rp then River would have kept the baby. River returned to Hogwarts when she was older to teach Potions alongside Professor Snape. She tries to be kind and accepting to all however she does have a tendency to hold no acceptance for those who discriminate. Any student who dares to utter mudblood in her presence would not be treated well.
PERCY JACKSON/GREEK MYTH v: camp half blood
River Song was a young, greek demigod who never knew either of her parents. She was raised by a foster parent who didn’t really care about her and so when she was six years old and a Satyr came to collect her the older woman gave her up willingly.River stayed in Camp Half Blood from then on turning twelve when Percy Jackson turned sixteen and so it was then that River found out her parentage. She is the daughter of Nemesis.Like her Mother River has a strong sense of right and wrong/ good and bad but she tends to understand more that the balance is flexible and sometimes you need to do something wrong to be good.
SHERLOCK v: sherlock’s consultant
Sherlock has various extra people who have different skills that help with his investigations. River’s is archaeology. She also works with anthropological aspects too. River works across the world but will often come to New York if needed.
She is completely human in this verse, has a life firmly on the ground of Earth.
DETECTIVE SHOWS (I.E LUTHER, B99 ETC.) v: di river song
River is an ordinary human in this verse. She was born to Amy Williams, a writer, and Rory Williams, a nurse. They were a normal happy family but her parents passed away in a fire when she was 14. She was put into foster care. At that point River’s life went downhill a little. She acted out for attention even stealing a bus at one point. This moment was when River decided to become a police officer mainly because one officer took her under their wing. She did well and soon raised the ranks to Detective Inspector.
SENSE8 v: last of her cluster
River Song is a sensate who was a part of a cluster who nicknamed themselves ‘the sixes’. They were all born at 6:06am on the 6th of June 1966 and there was six of them. Three girls; River, Anita, and Missy, and three boys; John, Dave and Other Dave. Their cluster was born when they were sixteen years old, at the time River was in the care system in England. Due to this her cluster Mother, a woman named Amelia Williams, worried that she would be vulnerable to being misunderstood by people who wouldn’t realise what was happening, and so travelled down from Scotland and adopted her along with her husband Rory who was apart of Amelia’s cluster. As the cluster connection grew romantic connections began to form, although highly unusual all six members were attracted to one another and by the time they reached their twenty-first birthday they all considered themselves in a relationship with the others. For years they felt no need to hide and met up throughout the years forming connections with other sensates as they travelled. They were aware of the changes within BPO after 2011 but it didn’t really affect them very much until 2013. Missy, a corporate lawyer, had been investigating the company and then disappeared. The remaining five did their best to find her and then Other Dave went missing, then Dave, then Anita, then John. By 2015 River was alone. She permanently takes blockers in an attempt to shield herself. She hates BPO and is well aware that it is because of them she has lost the people who meant the most to her. Due to this she is unlikely to connect with another sensate due to feeling unable to trust them.

What about the ones like Sam, Trend, Derek, etc? I know you like Derek Hale and I thought maybe there was a connection or something
Oooh. That makes more sense. I was confused since most of the direct next gen ARE so on the nose. Now I feel stupid. xD
Derek Rhys: actually not Derek Hale. Keep in mind, this OC was created in 2010. Teen Wolf started airing in 2011. Nope, a Derek that predates Teen Wolf. Derek Shepard from Grey’s Anatomy. I wanted that brunette suave McDreamy look in there. Rhys after Rhys Williams from Torchwood, because I just... really liked the name.
Trendafil Austin: Trendafil is Greek for rose and since he was originally endgamed to be with Derek the son of Demeter, I found that poetic. Austin... literally just because I wanted him to be Texan and figured I’d just go with it all the way and make its capital his last name
Sam Raser: An anagram of Mars+Ares.
Sara Mers: Also an anagram of Mars+Ares, because I wanted that connection between the two of them.
Marshall Mikaelson: Marshall after Marshall Eriksen from How I Met Your Mother, coupled with the last name of Klaus Mikaelson.
Phylicia Rosenberg: Phylicia as a different spelling of Felicity... Smoak. And Rosenberg is German for rose-hill which seemed like a very befitting name for a child of Persephone.
Joanna Foxx: I wanted Joe to have a non-female-traditional nickname. Joe. So I went with Joanna. And Foxx is honestly... just because I like foxes and they’re sly and it fit her.
Sedanur Aykan: I like playing with names and having traditionally-English sounding nicknames for foreign first names. Now, Danny was from the get-go supposed to have a German-Turkish mother, so I was looking for Turkish names there and Sedanur means “light”, which is a very fitting name for a child of Apollo. And Aykan is such a nice contrast because it means “descended from the moon”.
Hayden & Hunter Hood:Hood, obviously after Robin Hood, because thieves. And then I... honestly just googled popular names for twin-boys and picked a set that both had the first letter H because I’m a whore for a good alliteration.
Bellatrix la Fey: Bellatrix after Bellatrix Lestrange from Harry Potter, though also because I wanted the tough daughter of Ares to be called “Bella” because it’s a nice context. And La Fey after Morgana la Fey.
Rainbow Jordan: She’s a daughter of Iris. Three guesses why Rainbow. Jordan was a very random pick though.
Stella Ribeiro: Ribeiro because it means “river”, so in relation to Aphrodite being born by a body of water, I wanted a water-related last name for Stella. Stella, very on-the-nose, meaning “star” and I mean how’s that not a good name for a kid of Aphrodite?
Phineas DeVorut: Phineas named after the dude from the myths... before Riordan pulled him into HoO. And DeVorut... honestly, also named after someone somehow but I legit don’t remember.
Melissa Montgomery: Melissa, Greek meaning “bee” and Montgomery... reminds me of wine, don’t ask me why. So it kinda fit for a kid of Dionysus for me.
Lila Lovegood: Lila is German and means “purple”. Lovegood after Luna Lovegood also I love alliterations so there’s that.
Loki Murdock: Loki, very obviously, after the Norse Trickster. Now, where I got that particular Murdock from, I don’t remember. It ain’t Matt Murdock, because I didn’t know the guy back then. I heard the name somewhere and found it to sound very trickster-like so I picked that for Loki.
Blance Lamour: Blance, French for “white”, which, come on, snow, daughter of Khione. Super on the nose. Lamour, French for “love”, as a stark contrast to her cold-hearted exterior.
Takara Phenia Thompson: Takara, named after my mascot because I do so love inserting different forms of her into stories. Phenia after an OC kid of Cole/Phoebe from Charmed, because witch. And Thompson... legit just for the alliteration with Takara.
Arielle Schneider: Arielle is the German dub name of Ariel and since she’s a daughter of Triton, I just couldn’t not. Schneider, German “tailor”, just because it’s a super-ass common last name and I didn’t want to be deep when I created them.
Now, not every name has some deep philosophical meaning where I got it from. Some are legit just “I like this rather common first name and that rather common last name and the combination fits this character”, like Charles Smith, Victor Kruger, Leroy Jones, Erik Anderson, Jonas Meyer, Ulrika Schuster.
#My OCs#naming characters#I got decidedly better at it by now#I swear#xD#Fic: Chasingverse#PJOverse#Anonymous

Black and Gaunt names
All personal thoughts and nothing “groundbreaking”, of course, but the whole Delphi discussion, especially the bit “did Voldemort knew or not” made me want to write down some musings I had about her name and who eventually decided it.
We can be reasonably sure her full name comes from Alpha Delphini, the binary star, and the constellation, so a 100% proper Black name.
Then we have Delphi as the Oracle and Delphyne*, the dragon appointed by Gea to guard said oracle. And what other family likes to give Greek names (mythological ones), to their children if not the Gaunts themselves.
Marvolo and Corvinus** are latin names, sure, but Merope is straight out of myth and Morfin is a variation of Morpheus. And with a little reach, even the latin Corvinus can be linked to oracles, for crows were regularly used by roman augurs (in their augury, ok, Jo, you love your etymology, we get it XD), so we’re back to greek again. And Basilisk were first created in ancient Greece, least we forget.
So, after all of this, we have a name who perfectly fit in the Black tradition and in the Slytherin/Gaunt one, the line Voldemort was proud of and on which he based his whole iconography. And even assuming close Death Eaters as Bellatrix knew about the Gaunt line, it’s unlikely they were aware of the naming tradition (especially since how forgotten/obscure they already were in the ‘40).
End of the story? The name fit so well in both families traditions that I believe the “Voldemort knew" theory to be more likely, and that he picked the name, honoring Slytherin and the Black’s long history and distinction.
*proper dragon in some myths, half-girl and half-snake monster in others, as usual. I see what you did here, JK.
** mentioned on Pottermore, the one who came up with the idea to hide the Chamber’s entrance in the girls bathroom during 1700

Melodrama
Even after more than ten years of working there, some protocols and regulations at the Department of Mysteries were still a mystery to Rodolphus as much as the mysteries he had helped attempt to solve for years now. Of course irony had it that his ancestor and Minister for Magic from 1835 until 1841 had tried to shut down the Department, only to be told that the Unspeakables didn’t answer to the Ministry of Magic. When asked about it Rodolphus simply quirked his lips up in a half-grin and asked if they were the same as their ancestors too. The real implication in the matter was that Rodolphus’ family had been of importance over a century ago as well, important enough for one of them to make Minister for Magic, and that their pureblood ancestry could be traced back that much further, including a Minister that attempted to stop people thinking for themselves - it was something that Rodolphus could applaud, seeing that he agreed many people should not be thinking ever again, namely mudbloods.
Protocol prescribed a limited amount of time to be spent in each and every room, varying per room. The Love Room was the most limited, and thankfully so seeing as everyone kept falling asleep in there due to the scent in the room. Rodolphus, and many with him, suspected that it was the Amortentia Fountain in the middle of the room. The moment he started to feel like he was at home he knew he had to leave. His Amortentia was rain (which was a first warning sign, seeing as it should not be raining in there), chai tea (which should wake him up, seeing that was what tea did for him during long days or nights) and the Lestrange library (which was his last warning, seeing that the smell lured him into a false sense of security). He hated working there, however, but protocol prescribed that avoiding certain subjects was counterproductive. He wasn’t sure how it was counterproductive having him work on something he did not and was never going to understand anyway. He was told that due to his obvious dislike of the subject he may come up with some new insights others may not see. Rodolphus already severely disliked working there when he started working at the Department over ten years ago. The smell of the Amortentia fountain was impossible to resist and frankly he understood nothing of the concept of love at all. No one really did, but others got a much better grip at it than him and he hated being bad at something. Bad at love sounded like a title of a really bad Celestina Warbeck song, however true it may be. Protocols, regulations and what not were in place for a reason, however, so Rodolphus spent his hours researching the subject and getting nowhere with it. It always got him to thinking about things he’d rather not think about, things that had nothing to do with the subject directly. He was supposed to think about the role of the subject in mythology and where the ancient Greeks first started attaching significance to the subject, but he could not care less if he actively tried. Aphrodite was a myth if he ever saw one and her earlier counterpart Astarte was no better. The Greeks, and others before them, used mythology and extensive religious practises to make sense of life’s mysteries. Disaster meant they hadn’t done well enough in their worship rituals or simply worshipped the wrong gods. Their practices were from ages ago and were supposed to sound ancient to the modern mind. Perhaps this was his sanctuary. Perhaps knowledge was what he worshipped. It was one hell of a lot better than deal with everything else. Bellatrix looked at him differently these days, he knew. He may not pay attention to other people much, but he wasn’t blind either. Rabastan had been avoiding him, but that was hardly something new. The brothers never got along. He was the heir, Rabastan disliked him for it and he disliked Rabastan for disliking him for it. Rodolphus called it the ‘second son complex’ in his mind and had wondered on multiple occasions what Rabastan was capable of to make Rodolphus seem less perfect as the heir to their bloodline. The answer had never been quite clear - until it was. Rodolphus was not an emotional kind of person. His life was built around duty and logic, two concepts that were clear-cut and left nothing open to interpretation. It was what made him do so well in school and had him take a job as Unspeakable. It was the reason he married Bellatrix. It was why he joined the Dark Lord and got the Dark Mark. It was the right thing to do. It was good for his family’s reputation. Because if you played by the rules, you did everything right, life would turn out right eventually anyway. It wasn’t difficult. It was logical. Except that apparently, it wasn’t. Not when his little brother felt that tormenting him and reminding him that he wasn’t perfect was more important than the reputation of their shared family name. Not when his wife thought that sleeping with the one person that would bother Rodolphus the most was the best solution to fixing what was wrong in their marriage. He was once asked what he thought was the trademark of their society was. He considered many answers. Rumours? Existed everywhere. Gossip? Everywhere too. Flaunting money and luxuries? Hardly rare. Now he finally had the answer. It was melodrama. He wasn’t sure if it was pettiness or if Rabastan and Bellatrix were truly that pathetic. He was fairly certain that they would tell him it wasn’t about him when he mentioned it. ‘Not everything is about you, Rodolphus,‘ he would be told. Not everything was about him, but this so obviously was. Both of them could have slept with anyone and choose each other anyway. One thing that he got about it was that he would never have done the same thing. He valued his family name and the family’s reputation too much for that. He did not exist to break down what his family had built up for years because something wasn’t going the way he wanted it to. He was not that childish. Apart from his family name he also had enough respect for his wife not to cheat on her. He had never even entertained the thought. Until now. Because if Rabastan and Bellatrix could risk their family name and think they could get away with it, Rodolphus felt like he had every right to do whatever he wanted. He may not start melodrama but he could finish it and he would do that in whatever way he liked. He was almost certain that Rabastan would not see the problem. He was almost certain that Bellatrix would point out that he had it coming due to his behaviour. He didn’t care. His younger brother sleeping with his wife sounded like the summary of another strange myth about love that some kind of life lesson could be drawn from. It could be considered a lesson learned. He was the better person. The better man. The better heir. There was absolutely nothing right about your brother sleeping with your wife, but since he knew it would somehow end up being his fault he wasn’t going to get into it. Not Rabastan nor Bellatrix had ever come to him, so he wasn’t going to do the same thing for either one of them. The blame was with the two of them and Rodolphus was done with letting them think they were just going to get away with it. Hazel and everything else to follow was not something he was going to be responsible for. His brother and wife were not the only ones that could play that game. If their family name was going to be tarnished he was going down with it anyway, so it may as well play his part in it. If they could ignore the basic rules of society for selfish reasons he could do that too. That day he thought he finally found out what his problem with love was. It wasn’t logical. It didn’t follow any rules. Most of the time it either mattered too much or not at all. It surely meant nothing in their society. His life had taken a turn for the ironic after he uttered those bedamned words to Bellatrix - I love you, he had said and she had started crying, telling him to stop talking and to go away - because the roles were suddenly reversed. Bellatrix kept running. He was at home waiting. What Bellatrix didn’t know, however, was that the day also reversed their roles in another way. Rodolphus had given up trying to safe their marriage. It was nothing more than a facade for the public eye for him now. His words, however, had no doubt given Bellatrix hope. Thus after a year of being the one trying to understand the other and getting her to talk to him, Bellatrix was suddenly in his shoes. The hunted became the hunter and the new hunted had no desire to get caught, because he had learned.
#( self para ).#// alternative title: welcome to rodolphus' mind & i hope you enjoy your stay.#// this turned out much longer than i intended it to.

Black Cat Names 25 Favourites
Greetings to you, owner of a lucky black cat! I shall provide you with cool-sounding and cute black cat names to give your little furball buddy! We all want a good pet name for our animal companions – one that will suit them most and that they will be happy about too. Here are names for black cats that you might want to consider:
15 NAMES FOR MALE CATS
Inky
What can you imagine when a cat is named Inky? Well, I think the name Inky is for cats who are uber affectionate.
If your cats love to mark their territory by showering you with affection and leaving their mark on your furniture then Inky might be suitable for them. You know how a pen’s ink is black? Well, you see, it’s as if your cat is a big permanent marker telling everyone around him or her what is his domain.
Jet
Jet is a name for cats that are quiet but swift. They are like ninjas – you won’t even notice where they went to or even their presence, very much like a jet plane or something similar. But your cat will surely love to be called Jet!
Neo
Neo is quite a futuristic-sounding name. Neo means something like “new”. Naming your black cat Neo is going to rock! It is a unique sounding name that not most cats get. It also is the name of the lead actor in the blockbuster movie, The Matrix, which is a film from the future.
Nox
Nox sounds pretty cool, right? Well, in the Potterverse, in means “light off”. So naming your black cat Nox is awesome!
Onyx
Onyx is a happy-sounding name, don’t you agree? It seems like a name for a tough yet bubbly cat! Onyx has been a name used to name other animals too (heck even humans) but it just seems to sound so right when you call a cat by the name “Onyx”.
Panther
Panther is a usual name for cats – big ones: big large cats that have black fur and a strong gaze. No worries about giving the name Panther to a meek and small cat, it may suit them eventually as they develop.
Phantom
Now Phantom may be a common name for black cats because a phantom is often connected to the dark – to black. But nevertheless, it is still a name that’s nice to give to your cats especially if you have a great back story behind it, like how your cat is very fond of startling humans or fellow cats alike.
Pluto
Pluto is the Roman name of the god of the underworld, Hades. Now you can actually also name your cat Hades if you want – they mean the same thing anyway. These names seem to suit a black cat really well because the underworld is often connected to the color black.
Sly
You will definitely be able to relate to this if you are an owner of a black cat: ever had this moment with your cat when you can’t find him anywhere only to find out that he has been there all along; you just didn’t look hard enough? If your cat is a natural born prankster then Sly is the most suitable name there is!
Spook
The name Spook is somehow a variation of the name Phantom or Ghost. They all mean something related to the color black. Thing is, the name Spook or you can even use Spooky, seems to be the much “cuter” version of these variations.
Styx
Here’s another name that you can get out of Greek Mythology – Styx! If your cat’s fur is the blackest of all the black you have ever seen, then the name Styx will suit him!
Zorro
Who wouldn’t know about this masked hero? Or at least heard about him? If your cat loves to “come to the rescue”; then Zorro is a name that will be most appropriate for him. Adventurous cats will love to be called Zorro!
Salem
Well, well, if it is not our favorite home cat, Salem. The name seems to fit black cats very well, don’t you agree? Salem is the name of a talking black cat in the show Sabrina the Teenage Witch, afterward the name just seems to stick to it. If you have a clever and scheming cat then Salem might be a good choice for a name.
Tuxedo
If you want an elegant sounding name for your black cat – Tuxedo is the name you’re looking for! You can even have Tux as your cat’s nickname! Ain’t that cute?
Lucky
How about break some stereotypes and name your black cat, Lucky!
15 NAMES FOR FEMALE CATS
Luna
Luna means the moon – the moon stands out the best when there is a clear black sky. It befits a lady black cat that’s as lovely as the moon.
Raven
Ravens are smart and curious birds, see that surprising resemblance with cats? Cats can also be smart and of course, it is given that they are very curious. There will be no question in naming your lady cat Raven.
Bellatrix
If you are a Harry Potter fan then you will surely recognize this name! Who in the whole of Potterverse will not know this infamous witch? Well, Bellatrix may be on the dark side but she can be loveable too. Naming your cat Bellatrix is going to be badass!
Psyche
Psyche is another name found in Greek mythology. Psyche is Cupid’s lover – a really curious one. You know that saying, “curiosity killed the cat”? Well, in this case, curiosity killed Psyche and Cupid’s romance.
Pandora
Just like Psyche, the name Pandora is a name that you will see in Greek myths. She is also one curious being. If you don’t know her, she is the one responsible for releasing all the feelings that humans feel in the present.
Tea
A cat and a tea share something in common, what is it? Well, they can both be relaxing! Naming your black cat Tea may sometimes remind you to take a break from a long stressful day!
Gypsy
Gypsy sounds like a name for a free-spirited cat!
Yin
Well, you guess it, Yin is the other half of the famous YinYang tandem! Yang is the light and Yin is the dark. If you have a white cat at home, then maybe you can name your black cat, Yin!
Hershey
A certified chocolate lover would be eager to name his or her cat, Hershey! Just be sure not to give your cat chocolate, as you read in our blog post, can my cat eat? You will realise chocolate is a no no for our furrballs.
Raisin
Raisin is not bad as your cat’s name, but it will be bad for your cat if you will give her raisins!
Eclipse
Eclipse is such a phenomenon to behold – its majesty and grandeur are no different with the cat that will bear the name!
Arachne
Here’s another haul from the Greeks and their mythology. Arachne is a great weaver who challenged and angered Athena. Well, her guts brought her to her fate – she became a spider.
Fudge
There’s nothing wrong in naming your cat after a delicious treat! When cats and food collide, there’s love! Fudge is such a lovely name!
Robin
Let your furry little side-kick namesake be Batman’s very own loyal side-kick, Robin!
Oreo
Here’s another irresistible snack that you can use as a cat’s name? After all Oreos and cats are irresistible, right?
Whatever floats your cat’s boat!
When it comes to looking for black cat names, there will be a lot of resources available to you. In fact, the names we just listed above is only a few of them. Also, looking for names for black cats is not the only important thing that you have to consider here. A cool name is going to be useless if your cat will not respond to it, you have to make sure that your cat will not only like it but will also respond to it. (Read: How to teach a cat its name.)
