People will be like "Oh Kouyou is so mature and stable and put together" you're literally falling for her facade she is twenty six and projects so hard onto a suicidal 14 year old and the way she speaks is so antiquated it's ridiculous and her listed dislikes include hope she should be at the club

A fun fact about "Bertie Changes His Mind" is that Bertie's preferred method of daughter acquisition (viz., adoption) is one he shared with Wodehouse, at least partially. Wodehouse clearly didn't mind the "marriage" part of the process, but he never had biological children and seemingly had no interest in doing so (everything we know about him points to him being very asexual):
Tumblr media
Another fun fact is that he enlisted the help of his daughter Leonora on this particular story for the scenes in the girls' school:
Tumblr media
The "intimidating headmistress" archetype was also pulled from Wodehouse's real life, and this will not be the last time we see her in the Jeeves stories:
Tumblr media
(first and last excerpts are from P.G. Wodehouse: man and myth by Barry Phelps. The letter to Leonora is from Yours, Plum, edited by Frances Donaldson.)

Once again, please stop reblogging from lesbian-archives. They have tags for rad feminism, "gynocentricism", "womb envy", antiprostitution, and separatists tags along with other similar terminology in terf and swerf communities on their blog. It's literally within the most used tags when you go to search. Plus they used to reblog from terfs often enough and use said tags until they decided to be a lil more cryptic I guess....

something I find especially entertaining about Edward IV's reign is how Scandalous™ it was lol
he married a woman “whose origins broke all established conventions for English queenship” in a secret ceremony without consulting any of his lords and then made it everyone else's problem. he committed regicide, he committed fratricide; he was accused of bastardry, he was accused of bigamy and a 19-year-long sham marriage, he was accused of using necromancy against his subjects, he was accused of being enchanted by witchcraft by both his wife and his mother-in-law (multiple times). his own mother was said to "rule the king as she pleased" in the early years of his reign. he knew he was hot and actively milked it for money. he was vain as fuck: “he was wont to show himself to those who wished to watch him, and he seized any opportunity that the occasion offered of revealing his fine stature to onlookers”. he knew everything about everyone. "he was more favourable than other princes to foreigners". he was “fond of boon companionship, vanities, debauchery, extravagance and sensual enjoyments”; he was "thought to have indulged in his passions and desires too intemperately”; "it was ever feared he was not chaste”. his subjects publicly gossiped about his sex life, his doctors thought he was insane. NOBODY understood how he was still competent despite all this.
honestly, who was doing it like him?

"In Elizabeth Gaskell’s North and South (1854) a girl who is dying of tuberculosis accuses her master of refusing to invest twenty pounds in a ventilator which would have made the air much less harmful to breathe."

every day I wish for a Taylor Doesn't Turn Herself In AU simply so she can interact with Accord. I want Taylor "raised by an English professor" Hebert to bond with Accord over ruthless supervillainy for the greater good, the importance of public infrastructure, and respecting good old English grammar.

So I went to the wiki page for the henghill Bullet & Brain mission of 2.2 looking for some dialogue I had missed and
a) I found something incredibly tasty that slotted into some other thoughts I'd been having, more on that on another day, and
b) I saw this super fun little trivia at the bottom, which!
Tumblr media
I knew Penacony characters like Boothill took a lot of inspirations from old movies, but I didn't realize it was even in his and Dan Heng's relationship, that's so cool!!
It fits them very well, it's such a fun reference. "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" was an old buddy Western film (from 1969- nice) about a pair of outlaws. Butch Cassidy was the leader of a gang, and described as clever, affable, and talkative. Meanwhile, his closest companion, the Sundance Kid, was known as a man of few words.
Cassidy's original birth name was much more plain, but similar to Boothill, he took on a new moniker when he became an outlaw. "Cassidy" had been the last name of his beloved mentor, who taught him how to shoot and ride. And Sundance Kid was known as he was because Sundance was the name of his hometown, and it was the only place that had ever managed to catch and jail him, back when he'd been younger (also similar to Dan Heng, but ouch).
These two stick together like glue throughout the length of the film- through Cassidy's leadership of the gang being challenged, through a train robbery gone wrong, through being pursued by mercenaries, and even through fleeing to Bolivia and trying to start over together.
I don't want to say too much more, since the mission title is referencing one specific movie that I've never seen. I kinda wanna watch it now, though, just to see the inspiration that went into Boothill and Dan Heng and how they get along. I just think it's really sweet that these two were literally made to be the best of bros, how lovely is that. 💕
#honkai star rail#this can be ship or plantonic tbh yall are always free to tag my ramblings as you please haha#just! they're so sweet!!#FWENDS#i would love to see more of them being a dynamic duo further down the line ♡#i think the film moved things along a little quicker but the real life Cassidy and Sundance were actually in south america for a few years#they fled there to get away from pursuers along with Sundance's girlfriend Etta Place.#supposedly they managed to buy a small ranch and the three of them lived peacefully (and even lawfully!) together for like three years-#-until the law caught up with them again#at some point Etta Place returned to the US reportedly due to illness rather than not wanting to get caught like in the film#Sundance may or may not have escorted her back. but whether he did or not he returned to South America with Cassidy#the two of them eventually got into a huge firefight with authorities where Sundance was fatally shot and Cassidy chose to end his own life#that's the most common story anyway. some also say Cassidy snuck back into the US again where he lived quietly until his death.#but it reads kind of like rumors of Elvis Presley sightings to me BSMZKNSKS#the film ended much more happily with the two of them getting into shenanigans and a freeze frame of them in a hail of bullets haha#i wanna see Dan Heng and Boothill fight together too it would be so cool aaaaaa#they would be great at getting into shenanigans! as we've already seen!!#fun bonus info: Boothill's ult literally puts black bars at the top and bottom of the screen to look like a widescreen Western movie#fun bonus info 2: Cassidy was regarded with respect by some people bc he never stole from the poor he only robbed big companies#this is actually nicer than Boothill is in canon bc he openly admits he will rob someone blind if he doesn't like them BSKZKKZMSKDK#(although I feel like its implied he has more standards for this than he gives himself credit for.#like he makes it pretty clear he doesn't particularly like Argenti at first and thinks he's annoying as shit but I'm sure he didn't rob him#...would have been real fucking funny if he did though oh my god I would love to see him try that. it absolutely would not work BSKZKNSKSJS#hsr#henghill#bootheng#dan heng#boothill#hsr boothill#hsr dan heng

If I Should Stay
I’m late! I’m sorry! Life happened. Next update will happen as if this wasn’t late, so it’ll be on the 15th. 😊
Part 1 | . . . | Part 63 | Part 64 | Part 65
Days pass. El gets stronger. Everyone gathers, once again, for one last mission.
“Anyone wants out,” Steve says seriously, “you have it. This isn’t like last time. We’re not fighting bats. These are grown men who are smart, mean, and will not hesitate to kill you.”
“Papa is a bad man,” El adds. “He has bad men helping him. I don’t want them to hurt anyone else.”
“Kid,” Hopper starts, looking at Steve, “I think this is a job for the government-”
“The government knows,” Steve returns, turning back to everyone else, focusing on Nancy. “If we have to retreat, Nancy, I want you to get everything you can on them. I’d rather not call him unless we absolutely have to, but there’s a man who can help. You’re a great journalist and i know you can get this place torn to the ground if need be.”
“Meaning, if we can’t,” Eddie adds, and Steve nods at him.
Nancy looks between them. “Oh,” she says, brows furrowed. Suddenly she looks at Steve, eyes narrowed. “Him? Really?”
Steve frowns, confused. “What- Nance, what’re you-”
“Don’t Nance me,” she bites back, eyes sharp. “Not when you dumped me for-”
“And that’s enough,” Alli cuts in, tone sharp and eyes sharper. “You’ve officially overstayed your welcome, Miss Priss, I’ll consider letting you back in if you apologize.”
“Oh, stop it,” Nancy begins, but is stopped by Robin, who stands in front of her with her arms crossed.
“Out.” She says, low. Dangerous. “I’ve been through this shit twice. You don’t want to know what I’m capable of.”
Nancy looks at the two of them, looks from Wayne to Hopper to Joyce, then storms out when no one seems sympathetic. Jonathan follows her.
Steve sinks into his seat with an exhale. “I didn’t think- I mean, I knew she didn’t know, but I didn’t think it would- she would-”
El clambers onto the couch next to him. “Do you want me to help?”
He slowly turns to her, brows furrowing again. “Help?”
“Yeah. I can make her trip on the sidewalk. Or make a bird poop on her.”
“Do that one,” Mike says, “it would be funny.”
Steve pulls El into a hug with a sigh. “Thanks, Ellie, but that’s alright. It’s not nice to get back at people who are reacting out of anger.”
“Why’s she angry at you? You didn’t do anything.”
Steve sighs. “I kind of did-”
Robin raises a brow at him. “You broke up with her about a week before she would’ve, Steve, this is not on you. You told me about the conversation behind the school. If she couldn’t say it then, she couldn’t say it now. Simple as that.”
Steve sighs and tilts his head so his cheek is resting on top of El’s head. “I dunno, Robbie.”
“Well I know,” Allison says. “And you can tell me I’m wrong, but that would just make you wrong.”
Steve smiles. It’s a slow, small thing, but it’s there. “Sounds like a waste of time.”
“It would be,” she agrees, moving to press a kiss to his forehead.
Out of the corner of his eye, Steve sees Dustin frowning, looking from Steve, to Wayne, to Eddie. Finally, the lightbulb comes on. “Your boy!”
Steve groans, leaning his head back on the couch. “I knew it wasn’t gonna last forever, but could we not have one day alone?” He laments.
“No, just- dude,” Dustin says, looking highly judgmental. “He’s way too cool for you.”
Steve sighs, fighting a smile. “Never change, Henderson.”
“Lies,” Eddie says dramatically, “lies and slander, I played guitar and he killed an evil wizard, kid, he’s the most badass of all paladins, are you kidding me?”
“Well,” Dustin gestures at Steve, “sure, but look at him!”
“Yeah,” Eddie says, and grins. “I do.”
Dustin’s lip curls up. “Never mind. You two deserve each other.”
Steve and Eddie exchange a look. “What the fuck is that supposed to mean?” Steve asks, but Dustin’s already turned to talk to Mike, Will and Lucas.
Wayne clears his throat. “Someone should go talk to her,” he says. “I’d do it, but I dunno if she’d listen t’me, on account of Eddie bein’ my kid and all.”
“I’ll go,” Joyce offers, already standing.
“Can you maybe threaten her a little bit?” Robin asks hopefully. “If she tells anyone-”
“I’ll talk to her,” Joyce says firmly. “And if she decides not to listen… well, El’s her own person, and no one can really stop her.” She winks at El, who giggles and grins back.
“Thank you, Joyce,” Steve says quietly. “Be nice to her, please. She’s just fifteen.”
“So are you,” Joyce reminds him, and closes the door behind her.
“So,” Will says, brows furrowed, “you and Nancy were dating? And then you broke up with her, because the first time around, she broke up with you?”
Steve chuckles. “Not exactly. We- the first time around, you and Barb were both missing, and she was pretty frantic about Barb. I tried to convince her to keep going with her life, mainly because that’s how I cope. The problem is, that’s not how she copes. We had a fight, and I tried to talk to her the next day and she couldn’t tell me she loved me. She never broke up with me, but later that week she cheated on me with Jo- uh, with- with a friend.”
Will sighs. “It was Jonathan, wasn’t it?”

“Studies of Elizabeth Woodville […] have been hampered by the continuing fascination with her brother-in-law, Richard III. The Ricardian [and Yorkist] apologetic is now largely dependent upon the argument that the Woodville family posed such a threat to Richard of Gloucester, and the kingdom as a whole, that Gloucester had little option but to take the throne from his Woodville-dominated nephew. Although this argument has [irregularly] been contested, a reassessment of the queen's role in 1483 has not yet been attempted. Michael Bennett, in his 1987 account [...] still dismissed her as `an inveterate intriguer, capable in her vanity and fecklessness of some remarkable shifts and turns'. But more often she is scarcely mentioned in general histories of the period.”
-J.L. Laynesmith, “English Queenship 1445-1503” (thesis for the degree of DPhil in Medieval Studies, University of York, Centre for Medieval Studies, April 1999)
#Every single thing in this remains as true in 2024 as it did when she published it in 1999 btw#historicwomendaily#elizabeth woodville#wars of the roses#my post#Ironically Laynesmith herself is guilty of the same thing: her 'reassessments' of Elizabeth's role are really bad and always favor Richard#(so I don't know how she can call them 'reassessments')#also Laynesmith seems to think that the anti-Woodville argument has been 'repeatedly contested'#I would love to see those arguments because frankly from what I've seen (and I've searched A LOT) they are entirely non-existent#even historians like Rosemary Horrox who analyze Richard III critically retain a very negative and equally condemning view of the Woodville#throughout it all - so I am not sure that counts lol#That being said I'm really glad that Laynesmith pointed out how Elizabeth “is scarcely mentioned in general histories of the period”#because it's absolutely true#Like I said before - even in traditionally negative narratives there is very lacking interest in Elizabeth as a historical figure#She's only relevant for marrying Edward and Promoting Her Family and scheming against Richard#Most historians barely pay attention to her beyond that#The thing about Elizabeth is that she really has the worst of both worlds - she's vilified and diminished in equal measure#This has a lot to do with her brand of vilification; the persistent need to reaffirm Richard of Gloucester's appeal and authority;#and the very specific anomalous place she occupies in this period of time (between the three dynasties)#In the so-called 'era of queenship studies' where other controversial queens like Eleanor of Aquitaine Isabella of France and#MoA were receiving a great deal of attention and reassessments - Elizabeth remained equally vilified but was also#ultimately still dismissed as someone who 'grounded her queenship in her carnality' (with Edward IV) :/#So when recent 'revisionist' reassessments have depowered her still further...not only are they singularly unhelpful and inaccurate#they are also actively contributing to a major element of her negative historiography that has literally been present across centuries#hence why they annoy me so much#(This is also why Elizabeth is often written as a hysteric with haphazard and incoherent motivations in historical novels btw#It's a direct result of the vilification + diminishment combination that's been so persistent with her)
