Andrea Bowers in 'Ecofeminism(s)’ at Thomas Erben Gallery
‘Ecofeminism(s)’ at Thomas Erben Gallery, curated by Monika Fabijanska, is not only one of the first but one of the best shows recently opened to the public. Featuring iconic projects like Helene Aylon’s ‘Earth Ambulance,’ for which she transformed a truck into an ambulance for earth picked up at military bases, mines and nuclear reactors, and Cecilia Vicuna’s delicate assemblages of natural objects that convey fragility and connectedness, the exhibition presents important projects from the 70s and 80s alongside more recent work. Here, Andrea Bowers extends the continuum to the present and adds a note of urgency by flashing the word ‘real’ on and off in this neon sign. (On view in Chelsea through July. No appointment is necessary but visitors numbers are limited and masks are required.) Andrea Bowers, Climate Change is Real (Multiple), neon, MDO, paint, 20 ¾ x 57 inches, ed of 3 with 2 Aps, 2017.

Helène Aylon
Helène Aylon was born in New York, USA in 1931. She was raised in an orthodox Jewish home, which she grapples with in her later artwork. She attended Brooklyn College, and in 1973 moved to California to teach at San Francisco State University. Here, she developed her ecofeminism and over the next three decades, she worked on projects that addressed “what she perceived as the three landscapes of feminism [of the last three decades]: biological, ecological, and theological.”
She says in her artist statement, “the 70's work was about the visceral and orgasmic body and the inevitability of change; The 80's was about the earth, halting the arms race, uniting women from warring nations; In the 90's my aim was to shine a feminist lens with scholarly inquiry into ancient texts and practices that omit or deny the presence/input of women; In the 00's the G-D work has become more autobiographical regarding my ultra orthodox background.” Her work in the 70s included process art, in which she would use oil and allow it to move in whichever way it did naturally. Aylon’s work in the 80′s included powerful political pieces, such as “A Stone Carrying” which sought to bring together Arabic and Jewish women, and an ecofeminist piece in which she drove from military base to military base in an “Earth Ambulance” and collected dirt in pillowcases to drive them to a hospital. In the 90s, Aylon turned to Judaism, and worked on “The G-d Project.” In the G-d Project, part of which is titled “The Liberation of G-d,” Aylon laid parchment paper over the 5 books of Moses and used a pink marker to circle any misogynistic occurrences, and put pink dashes anywhere a female presence was missing. She is now focusing on foremothers, and her own status as a foremother.

Conversations | Helène Aylon & Feminism: A Fiscally Sponsored Artist at the 2017 Jerusalem Biennale
“Art history has been one incomplete truth, which makes it a lie.”
As the conclusion to a 20-year NYFA Fiscally Sponsored project, “G-d Project: Nine Houses Without Women,” Helène Aylon’s exhibition, Afterword: For the Children is now on view at the 2017 Jerusalem Biennale. Aylon is a prominent American visual artist and feminist and her exhibition forcefully confronts the Second Commandment (specifically “I Thy God, will visit the sins of the fathers onto the children—to the third or fourth generation of those who hate me”) as if to reclaim children and their future from an underlying and sustained patriarchy within Jewish texts.
Under the title of Watershed, this year’s Biennale presents works that add to the conversation of Contemporary Jewish Art and signify both the splits and convergences between individuals and groups. Aylon’s work not only literally extends the Watershed metaphor as they reflect tears of the children but also suggests the partitions and inequalities that exist in our society today.
Along with fresh insights on Aylon’s participation in this year’s Jerusalem Biennale, we are delighted to re-share an interview with Aylon back in early 2016, where we celebrated her achievements in the art world for Women’s History Month.
Title: Helène Aylon’s exhibition Afterword: For the Children at the 2017 Jerusalem Biennale Exhibition Dates: Now through November 15, 2017 Hours: Sunday - Thursday, 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Where: Hamachtarot Museum (Museum of Underground Prisoners), Rehov Mishol Hagvura 1, Russian Compound, Jerusalem, 9131401
NYFA: Central to the Jerusalem Biennale is the question of whether there is such a genre or concept of “contemporary Jewish art.” Do you consider your own work in that category?
Helène Aylon: I do not consider my own work “contemporary Jewish art.” My work merely looks to “rescue” myself from patriarchy wherever it comes close to me. In the 70s, with my process paintings, “The Breakings,” I challenged the playboy culture with images of the body as visceral—because the body leaks and sweats and shrivels and gives birth, etc. It makes one live or die. In the 80s, I sought to face the Arms Race which was also cowboy-esque with its male rivalry acting out which faction had the bigger stockpile of arms. This sickness inspired the Earth Ambulance. In the 90’s, I had to look at my own orthodox Jewish upbringing and schooling, and I sought to liberate G-d from the projection of my patriarchal forefathers who also dismissed the precious history of my foremothers.
Now, in my current appendage to my 20-year “The G-d Project: Nine Houses Without Women," my addendum currently at the Jerusalem Biennale is called Afterword: For the Children. I am distraught that the Second Commandment of The Ten Commandments states, “I Thy God, will visit the sins of the fathers onto the children—to the third or fourth generation of those who hate me.”
Therefore, as it were, I am “rescuing" G-d from the patriarchy!
NYFA: Your work engages with and at times poses as opposites themes of Jewish orthodoxy and feminism. Is there a relationship between these two themes? Are they opposites?
HA: I am being a detective, so to speak—searching for the anonymous prayers and traditions that have no authorship—and imagining that these were written and inspired and made into a female tradition by the foremothers. For example, lighting the Sabbath candles is not prescribed in “The Five Books of Moses.”
NYFA: Since beginning your career in 1960’s New York, you witnessed transformations to the art scene, the fabric of the city and cultural perceptions of feminism. How have such social and cultural changes influenced your studio practice? What do you think the landscape for emerging artists is today, in comparison to when you began exhibiting work?
HA: Emerging women artists have more opportunity to be seen and hopefully will change the culture if they see the legacy bestowed upon them with appreciation.
The greatest nonviolent revolution has been feminism. I am focusing on the tragedy of lost foremothers we will never know and what their great contributions might have been. I see myself as a future foremother. Art history has been one incomplete truth, which makes it a lie.
NYFA: In a June 2017 article titled "Why Old Women Have Replaced Young Men as the Art World's Darlings," there is talk about the growing, commercial interest of older women in the art world. Do you think this is evidence of gender equity and a success of feminism?
HA: Yes, this is delayed consciousness raising! It has taken a long long time to catch on, but once it goes click, the obvious reality cannot be overlooked.
NYFA: You began taking courses at Brooklyn College when your daughter entered kindergarten. What fueled your decision to study art and how did your mother and father respond?
HA: My mother would rave about the birthday cards and Jewish New Year cards I designed for her and would introduce me as her “daughter the artist” to distinguish me from my two younger sisters. I knew that my mother surely had a different concept of art. Perhaps she thought it might even be a plus when I came of marriageable age! But her designation, no matter the derivation, was encouragement enough for me.
I yearned to express myself and live my life on my terms. Before, I did what my parents dictated, what my teachers dictated, what my late husband dictated, what the community dictated and thus [this is] what my children came to expect. Art would be something they could not dictate.
I played down my secret thrill of attending Brooklyn College as an art student, though I felt much older than the other students. In this way my father could rationalize that I was getting a college degree so I could teach art and get a job.
NYFA: How did you support your children and negotiate the demands of motherhood with your work as an artist?
HA: Always my children came first and my art came next, but the art would not be compromised.
I tried a NY Times ad: working at an ad agency. I soon got fired. I tried to get a job as a guard in the Metropolitan Museum but they saw right through me. I applied for grants. I got into one of the first SoHo galleries, Max Hutchinson Gallery. Then, before my exodus to California, I signed up with Betty Parsons Gallery.
I taught for a few years in San Francisco State University which was my excuse for getting far away. I would sublet my studio when in San Francisco and also when I went to retreats such as Yaddo, Macdowell, VCCA, to avoid paying rent and still have a place to make art.
My uncle thought I should design wallpaper, my late husband’s teacher thought I could fake an accent and get a job advertising on TV. I would feign interest but ignore these "practical” suggestions [and] continue to struggle.
After my job was over and I did not get tenure at San Francisco State (see my memoir for why!), I no longer could afford the studio where I created the liquid sacks that broke. Nuclear America became my studio when I drove the Earth Ambulance to ‘rescue’ the earth from nuclear military sites in pillowcase sacks.
It was never smooth sailing and the situation has barely improved, even now, after getting a Lifetime Achievement Award on my 85th birthday last month. My small studio has become a storage space. I am now able to create art around activist work, but I have not a clue how to find a gallery. Betty Parsons found me and so did Max Hutchinson and Susan Caldwell. What gallerist will find me now?????
NYFA: The obstacles you faced and are currently battling seem to resonate with other artists. Where do you find the motivation to sustain your practice?
HA: I am motivated to learn for myself in ways that only art can teach.
NYFA: What artists inspired your work when you were beginning to make art and what artists are you looking at now?
HA: Then, my teacher at Brooklyn College was Ad Reinhardt, who did not teach but made me think. There is no “how to” and each artist must find the answers in oneself or ask the questions to oneself. But what gets me going is where I left off in my own last piece.
Now I like to look at Agnes Martin who said that “helplessness is the natural state for an artist and this is a good thing.” I relate to Ana Mendieta and dedicated my installation Wrestlers to her. I am drawn to Mierle Ukeles (who in the early ‘80s jokingly called herself and me “Mitzva Artists”), William Kentridge, Martha Rosler, Maya Linn, Bill Viola, and then there is Glenn Ligon… In 1996 Glenn Ligon wrote to me that he liked my "austerity” in The Liberation of G-d. But I am so blown away by his emotional splotches in his work. I wish I did not have to contain myself politely when it comes to my emotions about the misogyny and the erasure of the female. But I must “austerely” allow the viewer to be the Midrashist as the text I use is scripture, which is supposedly the words of G-d…
NYFA: “The G-D Project” has been fiscally sponsored since 1999. The work explores the way God has been used in the Old Testament to reflect patriarchal characteristics. Why did you initially seek sponsorship and how has sponsorship made this project possible? How did “The G-D Project” evolve over the past seventeen years?
HA: It was hard to deal with this very personal subject matter. G-d can be a potentially inflammable volatile subject. Calling it a “project” through NYFA neutralized it so that it could be looked at as an artwork. Furthermore, seeing G-d through a feminist lens became tagged as theological which made it easier to absorb. These subtle factors took away any sermonic stance that brings out tensions. Working through NYFA thus set the tone for exploration and radical truth-telling which is the realm of artists.
“The G-d Project” used my background to deal with feminist issues such as inequality. I find that theological feminism has not yet been dealt with, as has biological feminism and ecological feminism. The San Francisco Jewish Museum programmed “Four Rabbis and an Artist: A Talmudic Debate!" Yes, I took on Orthodox, Conservative, Reformed, and Reconstructionist rabbis! The National Museum of American Jewish History in Philadelphia, Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, and Ackland Art Museum all programmed this debate with Rabbis from their communities. The Liberation of G-d and the Unmentionable has been the subject of a conference and the thesis of a Ph.D. and [these] theological public debates were viewed as activist performance art.
In Jerusalem women judges are forbidden to judge in the religious Court, which is the subject of All Rise. A patron has offered to pay for its transportation to Jerusalem if it will be shown in the Jerusalem Biennale in 2017. I am holding my breath as this has the potential to affect change.

The Foremother’s Challah Cover by Helene Aylon (1931-2020).
“Perhaps she braided Her hair in the morning Like she braided the havdala candle For the end of the Sabbath And surely she braided the dough On Friday before She put the dough in the oven And when she laid the cover Over the twin challas (as mother gently covers her babes in the night) I say she was the first to say Who bringest forth bread from the earth.”

August 29, 2018: Obituaries
Nancy Church, 96
Nancy Lee Alexander Church, "Nana," 96, of North Wilkesboro, widow of John Robert Church passed away Monday, August 27, 2018, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law in North Wilkesboro. She was born in Matthews, N.C., on March 21, 1922; Mrs. Church was the daughter of Neilly Orman Alexander and Hattie Smith Alexander.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Robert Church; four brothers, Glenn, David, Franklin, and Ralph; three sisters, Mary Neil, Ruth, and Doris. Mrs. Church is survived by her daughter, Dr. Karolen Church Bowman and her favorite son-in-law, Dr. J. Thomas Bowman of North Wilkesboro; grandchildren, Dr. John Daniel Bowman and wife Ruhi of Highland Park, Illinois; Dr. David Neil Bowman and wife Mandy Jones of Wake Forest, N.C.; Paul Thomas Bowman of Asheville, N.C.; and Katherine Lee Lundy and husband Nathan of North Wilkesboro; great grandchildren Debra, Abigail, and Elijah Bowman, and Flynn Lundy.
Mrs. Church attended high school in Matthews, and graduated with a degree in Home Economics from Woman's College (Now UNC-G) in Greensboro and received her Master's degree from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. For a while she taught Home Decorative Arts at Bowling Green College in Kentucky.
While teaching high school in Haw River, N.C., she met John Robert Church from North Wilkesboro who was then working for Melville Dairy. The folks she was living with arranged a dinner that included Nancy and John Robert. After that dinner, she would say with a smile, they went for a walk, and the rest is history. While they were seeing each other, John Robert went into the Army in 1943; was in the Second Wave of the invasion against German forces in occupied France at Normandy, was wounded and received the Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars. After he returned home from World War II, they were married on Oct. 25, 1947 and returned to North Wilkesboro where she became a homemaker. Clearly, she was a strong woman behind a successful man. John Robert Church passed away in Feb. of 1981.
Mrs. Church loved to sew and make quilts and was widely recognized for being instrumental in the growth of Home Demonstration Clubs in this area. An excellent cook, she was known for her lemon pound cakes and chocolate cakes--which she always said weren't quite up to par--but she was the only person ever who said that.
A lifelong Presbyterian, and a faithful member of the North Wilkesboro Presbyterian congregation, Mrs. Church was very active in the Children's Program, Sunday School, Bible School, she was the Youth Group leader, and a member of the Women's Circle. In fact, in 1965 she was elected as the first female Deacon in the North Wilkesboro church.
Burial services will be held on Sunday, Sept. 2, at 2 p.m. at Mountlawn Memorial Park in North Wilkesboro. Everyone is invited to attend. Funeral services will be held on Monday, Sept. 3, at the North Wilkesboro Presbyterian Church on E Street in North Wilkesboro. The family will greet friends beginning at 10 a.m., with the funeral service beginning at 11 a.m. Officiating will be Dr. Susan Moorefield.
Memorials may be made to the Wilkes Community College Endowment Corporation or the North Wilkesboro Presbyterian Church Building Fund.

Mr. George Franklin McNeil, 1128 Winkler Mill Road, Wilkesboro, NC died Tuesday, August 21, 2018 at Wake Forest Baptist-Wilkes Medical Center. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife; the former Joyce Dancy and an infant son. He is survived by one brother; Commodore C. McNeil, Jr. of Imperial, CA, one son; Kevin L. McNeil and wife Denise Lackey McNeil of Mooresville, NC and two grandsons; Drew McNeil and Cole McNeil.
Mr. McNeil was born in a rural farmhouse near Ebony, VA on May 5, 1934, son of Commodore C. McNeil and Eva Clary McNeil. In 1940, he moved with his family to Wilkes County and settled in the Charity Church Community between Millers Creek and Purlear. He graduated as valedictorian of the Millers Creek High School Class of 1952. He received a Congressional Appointment to Naval Reserve Officer's Training Corps but was not able to pass the physical examination.
Mr. McNeil began working as a trainee for The Northwestern Bank immediately after graduation, when it was a small regional bank with branches in 12 towns in Northwestern North Carolina. It became a multi-billion-dollar financial organization with more than 230 branches throughout the state. He worked in all areas of the bank and built a career by devising ways to make those parts work together more effectively and efficiently. In the late 1960s, he was a member of the multi-state steering committee that overcame the competitive concerns and developed the technical specifications and operating procedures that allowed an association of banks to introduce Master Charge (now MasterCard) credit cards to the Atlantic States. He served on the Board of Directors of NorCACHA (North Carolina Automated Clearing House Association.) He chaired the Operations Committee of that organization and was responsible for writing the first User's Manual that guided banks in North Carolina and South Carolina to begin to originate and receive Direct Deposit and Direct Debit (paperless) transactions. He was also on the Board of Directors of NorCaPS (North Carolina Payment Systems) when that organization developed the technical and operational framework that made possible the multi-state deployment of shared ATMs and merchant point-of-sale terminals. He was Vice President of the Automation Division of The Northwestern Bank for twelve years. He later worked in the Regulatory Compliance Department of the Bank, and then developed the concept, wrote procedures for, started and managed Central Installment Loan Operations for the Bank. When Northwestern merged with the First Union National Bank, he continued on a part-time consulting basis and implemented major computer assisted systems for First Union in Charlotte, Atlanta and Jacksonville; one dealing with computer-indexed micrographics and one dealing with computer-assisted collections. He retired in 1989.
As a condition to his initial employment with the bank, Mr. McNeil joined the North Carolina National Guard in 1952. He served seven years as an enlisted man, achieving the rank of SFC E-6, then was in OCS Class 1 of the North Carolina Military Academy. He attended Basic Infantry Officers course at Ft. Benning, GA, and received his officer's commission. He held various positions in the National Guard units in Asheville, Boone, North Wilkesboro, Lenoir and Winston-Salem. He served six years as Commanding Officer of the local National Guard Company, leading it through a change-of-branch reorganization - from Infantry to Transportation (Heavy). His last assignment was as a S3 (Supply Officer) of the 540th Transportation Bn. He transferred to Inactive Reserve in 1973 with the rank of Captain and retired in 1999.
Before becoming deeply involved in National Guard and regional bank-related trade and research organizations, Mr. McNeil was in the Jaycees and was Chairman of the Local Board of West Wilkes High School for several years.
After retirement, Mr. McNeil helped his wife in her genealogical pursuits. Together, they tried to locate every burial site in the county, document the location and record who was buried there. Undoubtedly, there are some abandoned graveyards that they did not visit, but they recorded more than a 52,000 graves in more than 770 graveyards in the county. Years of research resulted in determining the name of the parents and spouse(s) of about 85% of these people. Mr. McNeil adapted personal computer applications to store this information and make it accessible in a variety of ways that assist those doing genealogical research on people who have lived in Wilkes County. They also abstracted and indexed many types of local public records, such as Census enumerations, marriage licenses, delayed birth certificates, land grants, the Grandfather Book, etc. In 2014, the computer files and research material became the Joyce D. McNeil and George Franklin McNeil Family History Collection at the Wilkes Heritage Museum in Wilkesboro.
Mr. McNeil was active in Pleasant Home Baptist Church and Brushy Mountain Baptist Association until 2003, when he joined Wilkesboro United Methodist Church. There, he has served as Church Treasurer, Chair of the Endowment Committee, as a member of various other committees and as a lay speaker.
The family requests no food or flowers. Memorials may be made to Wilkes Heritage Museum for the McNeil Family History Room, PO Box 935, Wilkesboro, N C 28697.Funeral services were held August 26, at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel with Rev. Paul Hugger and Rev. Karen Roberts officiating.

Actual Art
New Post has been published on https://hisour.com/art/actual-art/
Actual Art
Actual Art as a genre of art that involves “the self-conscious enlistment of the forces of nature, by artists, toward the completion of their art”. Collaboration with nature necessarily brings the dimension of time into as an integral component of the artworks, with some requiring many thousands of years for their completion. The artists consider the future of the work to be as important as its present, relinquishing control over the work to nature. Actual Art ambivalence in the expressive line about the fine arts, which are at once the eminent manifestations of art and its deepest. The need for the purist line to decide between speaking for all actual art or only for adversary art. Actual Art is a genre of art that was first named by critic Alfred Frankenstein of the San Francisco Chronicle in a review of Helene Aylon’s work. The name was chosen because the art was "real", but the term realism was already in use. In Actual Art, what future generations will see is programmed into the work, making time an element of the work, as well as space, form or color. The artists introduce time as a tool in the making of art. Actual Art is about energy; specifically, about the energy and life in the materials. Words like “decay”, “deterioration” or “destruction” are replaced with “change”. Tery Fugate-Wilcox is quoted as saying, “The work will last forever, as long as you understand it changes.” Actual Art moves one to think about ways to work with nature instead of fighting it. In place of the constant attempts to inhibit materials’ natural tendency to change (to the detriment of the planet), man might be examining and exploiting the inherent qualities of the materials we work with. Actual Artists have a visionary sense of the natural order of the material world. [pt_view id="53c7ae3stn"] History: In 1982, the Actual Art Foundation formed in the Tribeca district of New York City to promote exclusively artists working in the Actual Art genre, and in 1985, obtained its 501-C3 not-for-profit tax-exempt status to fund exhibitions of Actual Art and projects proposed by Actual Artists. The most notable early exhibitions sponsored by the Actual Art Foundation were: "It's About Time" at the New York City Gallery in 1983 "Time Will Tell" at Squibb International, Princeton, NJ in 1984 "Slow Kinetic Art" at the Wadsworth Athenium, Hartfortd, CT "Time Waits..." co-sponsored with Johannes, 11th Prince of Thurn and Taxis and his wife Gloria at Schloss St. Emmeram in Regensburg, Bavaria, Germany. The "Time Will Tell" exhibit was documented in articles appearing in the New York Times, the Bergen County Record, the Princeton Packet, and the Trentonian. Artists: Helene Aylon, whose work employing the qualities of linseed oil to “bleed” into patterns or form a “skin”, prompted the naming of the genre by Alfred Frankenstein; "'Actualism' because 'Realism' is already taken." Michelle Brody, who suspended living plants in long, hanging tubes of water; Maria Ceppi, of Switzerland, grew grass in patterns on canvas & scented soap paintings; Gregg Degn, using gunpowder, lead, explosives & fuses to make intricate & evolving paintings & sculpture; Dan Dempster, of Bermuda, who took his drawings beneath the sea, to allow the salt water to etch his drawings into steel & whose work was reviewed in American Mensa Robert DuGrenier, whose hand-blown glass pieces are permanently part of the trees, as they grow into and become one with the sculptures; Untitled by Robert DuGrenier, hand blown glass sculptures on tree hand-blown glass "sea" shells, that living hermit crabs move into and take as their homes; and a glass beehive, that is home to thousands of Italian honey bees who busy themselves making wax & honey sculptures, as programmed into the construction of the hive, by the artist. James Horton, who used the materials of photography as a painting medium. Nathan Slate Joseph, of Israel, making gigantic wall pieces of pigmented & galvanized steel that have weathered over many years; Joseph was commissioned to create all of the art, including major indoor & outdoor installations by the King David Dan Hotel in Elat, Israel. Yutaka Kobayashi, of Japan, imbedding rust in handmade paper or concrete & stone sculptures; Elaine Lorenze, with living plants in concrete; David Myers, put lead shot in enclosed, tilting table, making endless patterns; "Winding" by Tony Reason, rust in encaustic on linen, 44" x 44" Richard Thatcher, encasing uranium, transmuting to lead, in exquisite metal boxes; Merrill Wagner, using steel, allowed to rust in patterns, slate & rocks, weathered with pigments; Tery Fugate-Wilcox, uses water-soluble paint & rain to make ever-changing painting on canvas; Called the “Avatar of Actualism” He uses rain to make paintings of water-soluble paint; shotguns, explosives & lightning; dust in “dust drawings”; metals that oxidize, or diffuse together over thousands of years, the actuality of any material. His work is in the collections of the Guggenheim & Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Wadsworth Athenium in Hartford, Connecticut, the National Gallery of Australia & a 36-foot (11 m) sculpture purchased by the City of New York for J. Hood Wright Park. The headquarters of Actual Art Foundation was also used for an episode of Law & Order circa 1990, featuring Actual Art. Actual Art Foundation lost its Tribeca headquarters in the attacks of 9/11 and created an Art Center at Candlewood Lake in Connecticut
