Hello fellow Coco fans!
I had a question. Multiple actually but this one has been sitting in my head for a long time.
If Hector had actually been forgotten - if Miguel had been a little too late, and Coco had forgotten, only to start remembering after through their song, would Hector still remain at the Land of the Dead? For there would have existed a time when no one in the Land of the Living remembered his existence, which is enough to disappear from the Land of the Dead. But, if he was remembered after, would he come back? Would that be possible?

Haunts, ghosts, ghouls, and revenants, what spooky tales they weave! Join their world here in Swynlake…
Moonwind Stardancer (Moonwind Stardancer, Soul) - Ghosts and ghouls deserve love too! That’s the Moonwind Stardancer approach to being a medium. You see your gift as a higher calling to help lost souls find their way to the next realm. Is this your true calling or do you just think you know better than the spirits you help?
Ichabod Crane (Ichabod Crane, The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad) - A bestselling author whose stories are inspired by the ghosts you see, you’ve come to Swynlake in hopes of finding an answer. Why does this spooky headless creature keep following you? And how can you get rid of it?
Hector Rivera (Hector Rivera, Coco) - You’ve got a bone to pick…or two. Question is, with who? Will you ever find out who murdered you and make amends with your family?
Jack Skellington (Jack Skellington, Nightmare Before Christmas) - Your “gift” has felt like anything but a gift your entire life. You cannot learn to love it, you refuse to. Can you manage to suppress it or will it prove to be forever part of you?
Auguste Gusteau (Auguste Gusteau, Ratatouille) - There are worse emotions to have to mine in order to maintain corporeal form, though maybe you could’ve done without it being so specific. As a revenant you are able to exist if people enjoy your recipes! You’ve come to Sywnlake in hopes of repairing your tarnished reputation, as a restaurant here is using your recipes.
Demitri “Demi” Whitfield (Demi, Vampirina) - Talk about a big oops. After causing and accident that led to your death, you are revenant, kept corporeal by one thing and one thing only – absorbing satisfaction! That’s right, you must be a people pleaser or else you literally will blink in and out of existence. Fun!

I know we’re all aware of this. But I’m tired and feeling things, so I’m just gonna vent.
Héctor’s motivation throughout the film was not to be remembered. I saw a post a while back in which people were questioning the “plot hole” of the fact that Miguel putting Héctor’s photo on the ofrenda would not mean he was remembered, even if Miguel remembered him (memories must be passed down by from the people who knew him in life). He knew he was living his last day, so to speak.
He wanted to be able to cross the bridge that night because he wanted to see his daughter again before he faced his Final Death. Which means:
1) He’d completely given up on Imelda forgiving him. He wasn’t even going to try to talk to her on what he knew was his last night.
2) He probably had more plans to try to get across the bridge. He’s dying and desperate. If he hadn’t met Miguel, I bet he’d have spent the whole night trying to get across before he just didn’t have the strength.
3) Finding out that Ernesto killed him had to have just sucked extra bad, because Héctor had probably come at least pretty close to making peace with his death. But, finding out you were murdered would send anyone into a downward spiral into the emotional abyss. Hell of a way to spend what could be your last moments.
And he was still so happy. So upbeat. Caring and genuine where it counted, obviously loved by the friends he has. Helping a little kid find his family. In what could be his last moments.
I just. this movie and this character, man.

Can we all take a moment to think on how Héctor wouldn’t have been murdered if he left his songbook with Ernesto?
I left the movies the other day thinking about it. A songbook. The guy died because another guy wanted his songbook... imagine what would’ve happened if he had given the book to Ernesto so he’d pursue his dream. He would’ve gone back to his family unharmed... but then again, he could always come back and tell the press Ernesto’s songs weren’t written by him, so there’s that.
What do you guys think? Even if he gives away the songbook, does Ernesto still kill him or not?

Do you ever remember that even though Héctor finally reunited with his family, he still missed seeing Coco grow up and missed growing old with Imelda and just. Cry.

So something I've been thinking about since I saw Coco is this:
poisoning is not a murder of passion.  It isn't the blunt instrument that someone takes up and smashes over a person's head and then maybe feels remorse or horror at what they've done.
It is premeditated. You have to procure poison. It has to be on hand. Sure, it could be something mundane --arsenic, for instance, was historically used a pesticide, so it could just be lying around the house-- but even then it's not something one just has in a pocket to slip into a drink.
Unless one has planned to have it there.
Which means that Ernesto was planning to murder Hector for some time before he actually did.
Even if Hector had not specifically said he was leaving before, there would definitely be signs that he was homesick.  He talked about Coco and Imelda constantly. Sometimes he would drift away in the middle of sentence as it really hit him how much he missed his family. Ernesto was no longer able to convince him that being on the road was something Hector wanted, that leaving behind the people he loved most in the world was an acceptable sacrifice for playing music for the world.
Maybe he convinced himself he would only use it if Hector pushed him to that extreme, but it had been a fully-formed plan in Ernesto's mind, long before the fateful night Hector decided he was going home.
And Ernesto seized his moment.

So I just watched Coco again
Damn it. It keeps getting me.
When Miguel narrates Imelda’s story when I know why her husband never returned.
Watching Coco call for her dad upon seeing the picture without knowing just how much he loves her.
Watching Hector try (and fail) to cross the bridge, all while knowing that it is his last day.
When Hector applies make-up on Miguel and realising that he probably did this for Coco as a kid.
When Cheech fades away from existence and we know that Hector has known for a long time that his own end is near. AND THE SHOT WITH THE GLASS LIKE WHAT THE HELL PIXAR
When Hector and Miguel sing Un Poco Loco and Imelda arrives on the scene and promptly disappears and realising that she would have recognized both the song and the singer.
When they fight and Miguel just casually tosses Hector’s photo away leaving him scrambling to get it back.
When Ernesto and Hector meet again. THAT ENTIRE SCENE. I knew what was going to happen. And it still hit me hard. Watching Hector feel homesick all while knowing he doesn’t get to see his daughter for nearly a century. Like just imagine. Dude wants to go back to his wife and daughter cause he misses them. Gets murdered for that choice and doesn’t even get to see them for decades following which his wife shuns him.
The cenote scene. So sweet and utterly heartbreaking. And the first time we see Alive!Hector interacting with someone who genuinely loves him and will keep loving him for nearly a century until they can see each other again.
ALSO I JUST REALISED REMEMBER ME ISN’T JUST A LULLABY? LIKE DID HECTOR THINK COCO WOULD FORGET HIM IF HE DIDN’T GIVE HER A SONG TO REMEMBER HIM WITH?? (IGNORING THE FACT THAT IT NEARLY DID HAPPEN) LIKE IT IS LITERALLY A SONG ASKING HER TO REMEMBER HIM WHILE HE IS AWAY, KNOWING SHE IS IN HIS HEART LIKE AWWW
And of course, de la Cruz ruined it.
Imelda not being able to immediately forgive Hector is more understandable now than it was when I first watched it. She has been holding a grudge for a long time. It is not easy to let go of that. Added to the fact that she would have struggled a lot as a single mom too. She is so awesome.
La Llorona. Or the time it finally hit Imelda how much her husband would have loved to be by her side. It doesn’t fix things immediately, but puts them on the path of doing so. She was facing the world alone back then, but the fact that he didn’t mean to leave seems to start sinking in.
Ernesto throwing Miguel off the building just solidified his fate, didn’t it?
When Hector and Imelda give Miguel their blessing as Hector is fading into oblivion.
And of course, the beauty that is Coco remembering her Papa and literally everyone else. (Her remembering Elena after not recognizing her earlier is also so sweet)
PROUD CORAZON. HECTOR AND COCO. HAVE GIVEN EACH OTHER A BIG HUG. JUST LIKE THEY ALWAYS WANTED TO. I AM GOING TO DIE.
This movie gave me the feels the first time I watched it. And each time I watched it again, I keep learning more things, finding more tragic details. Like how Hector was so stupidly young.
Anyway. Those were my thoughts.

Spooky season is fast approaching...what haunts will you bring to Swynlake just in time?
Hector Rivera (Hector Rivera, Coco) - You’ve got a bone to pick…or two. Question is, with who? Will you ever find out who murdered you and make amends with your family?
Jack Skellington (Jack Skellington, Nightmare Before Christmas) - Your “gift” has felt like anything but a gift your entire life. You cannot learn to love it, you refuse to. Can you manage to suppress it or will it prove to be forever part of you?
Djinn Roshan (Genie, Aladdin) - 3000 yeeeeears can give you such a crick in the neck! You imagine, anyway. Contrary to popular myth, you aren’t kept in a bottle. Rather, inside a human host. You yearn for freedom. to be done with serving human’s wishes, but is it written in your fate?
Moonwind Stardancer (Moonwind Stardancer, Soul) - Ghosts and ghouls deserve love too! That’s the Moonwind Stardancer approach to being a medium. You see your gift as a higher calling to help lost souls find their way to the next realm. Is this your true calling or do you just think you know better than the spirits you help?
Demitri “Demi” Whitfield (Demi, Vampirina) - Talk about a big oops. After causing and accident that led to your death, you are revenant, kept corporeal by one thing and one thing only – absorbing satisfaction! That’s right, you must be a people pleaser or else you literally will blink in and out of existence. Fun!

For the movie asks, how about D, R, T, Z, AA, and AB?
Let’s do this!
D. Favorite movie soundtrack
Favorite Movie Score: Wall-E (2008)
Favorite Movie Soundtrack from an Orignal Musical: The Prince of Egypt (1998)
Favorite Movie Soundtrack that Used Pop Songs: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)
R. An underrated actor.
Sam Rockwell can use some more love. He always gives an interesting performance no matter what he’s in. I’m always happy to see him.
Also, Lee Pace! Where is he? I miss him. And stop having him play assholes!
For a dead actor, I have to go with Thomas Mitchell. If I were to make a movie and could pick any actor from any era, I would make sure to have him.
T. An underrated director.
Michael Crutiz. He’s never a director brought up in film school, but I guarantee you’ve watched at least one of his movies. He’s did Casablanca (1942), The Adventurs of Robin Hood (1938), Captain Blood (1935) and so many others. He directed most of the big budget Hollywood blockbusters of the Golden Age of Hollywood. He is the definition a working director and he deserves way more credit than he gets.
Z. Favorite movie characters.
Oh God...okay, here are the ones that have really stuck with me for some reason or another over the years. The lists changes a lot, so it might be best to narrow it down to era or director or something. Also, I’m pulling away from fandom stuff, since you all know who I love.
In no particular order:
Willy Wonka from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971)
Tumblr media
It was the first time I can remember being fully mesmerized by a character and wondered what they were going to do next. The credit goes entirely to Gene Wilder and I can’t thank him enough for it. I re-watch the movie, just for him.
Hector Rivera from Coco (2017)
Tumblr media
I love Hector so much it hurts. The ending when he’s walking across the bridge, and there is the split second of fear but as he realizes he can walk across he looks up with this smile and, excuse me for a minute while I cry. I can’t remember the last time I was so invested in a character.
Rapunzel from Tangled (2010)
Tumblr media
Rapunzel is always going to have a soft place in my heart. Her journey of figuring out what she really wanted out of life, her fear of disappointing her Mother and her general out look really hit me at exactly the right moment in my life.  I was Rapunzel and Rapunzel was me.  I never saw that in a character before.
George Bailey from It’s a Wonderful Life (1946)
Tumblr media
I watch this movie every year, and every year I get something new out of George Bailey, who he is and what his life means to him and those around him.  He’s a good man despite his best efforts and it gets me every time.
Captain Louis Renault from Casablanca (1942)
Tumblr media
Every word that comes out of his man’s mouth is iconic. Another character who you’re not a hundred percent sure what he’s going to do or why, he’s a fantastic character in a movie full of them.  I just want a movie of Louis and Rick fighting in the French Foreign Legion, is that too much to ask?
AA. A film that was better than the book.
Controversial, possibly.  Neil Gaiman still is my literary idol, but I’m going to go with Stardust (2007) on this one.
Tumblr media
I’m not sure what is was about the book, but I just did not enjoy it as much as I did the film. The movie takes a very different tone, closer to The Princess Bride, while the book is the classic almost dreamlike state Gaiman has perfected.  Maybe I need to go back and re-read the book, but as it stands, I really love the movie and am lukewarm on the book.
AB. Best remake.
Top 5 in no particular order:
Fright Night (2011)
Tumblr media
The writing is better, the tension is better, and you’ve got David Tennant going full slut in leather pants.  What’s not to love?
True Grit (2010)
Tumblr media
Dads across the nation may lament this choice, but it’s true.  The Coen Brothers trump John Wayne on this one.
The Thing (1982)
Tumblr media
I do have a soft spot for the original, but there is no denying the superiority of its remake. It’s a horror classic for a reason.
Little Shop of Horrors (1986)
Tumblr media
A movie based on a musical based on a B-horror movie from the 1960s, and it’s one of my favorite films of all time.  How could it not be on the list?
Ocean’s Eleven (2001)
A cheesy Rat Pack movie re-envisioned as a slick heist movie with an all star cast.  I love it.
