Hearthbreak High

This series means so much to me for so many different reasons, but the biggest is definitely the character of Cash. Never have I seen a main character I could relate to more. He is the first fully fleshed out asexual character in a leading role in a big Netflix show. That is huge.

He is also not aromantic which is usually how asexuals are represented (in the very few instances that we are represented). Aroace characters are important of course but that is not the entirety of the ace spectum.

The complicated feelings of wanting love and wanting to be in a relationship with someone but not wanting to engage in sexual acts is a difficult thing to come to terms with. We have always been conditioned to believe that romantic relationships and sex go hand in hand and that you can't have one without the other. It makes us believe that we'll never find someone who's willing to "settle" for us because they'll have to sacrifice something so fundamental as physical intimacy and sex.

Cash and Darren are therefore a breath of fresh air. While their relationship is complicated, both are determined to make it work - because they love each other. That is what's important to them. Love. While they have very different feelings towards sex and physical intimacy, that ultimately comes second.

Many people believe that an allo-ace relationship is doomed because of the difference in attitude towards sex, but this show wants to challenge that belief. We are not destined to be alone. We can love and we can find people who can love us back.

Anyway, I love Cash so much and I will fight anyone that says anything even remotely bad about him.

In regards to other recommendations... oooooh boy. I have so many. This took me a while because I was considering if this would be respectful to the strikes, but we haven't been told to stay away from any streaming services etc. yet, so after removing a scab from the recommendation list I decided to post it. Apologies in advance for the tangents I go on for every single recommendation. Some of these have been quite popular so you might know of them but it still felt worth mentioning.

Under the cut is a non-exhaustive list of media in no particular order that makes me want to eat glass. Take a shot every time I say heartbreaking.

Movies

Lord of the Rings 1/2/3 - I feel no need to explain myself. If you haven't seen this please for the love of god get your hands on the extended versions and watch them. Then read the books and watch the movies again. Rinse and repeat.

How to Train Your Dragon and How to Train Your Dragon 2 - You read that right, NOT the third movie. In this house the third movie doesn't exist. This is an animated movie and sequel based on the book it shares a name with by Cressida Cowel. The movie follows protagonist Hiccup who lives in a town of Vikings who hunt and kill dragons. He finds out that he can't kill a dragon he has caught, and is surprised when the dragon won't kill him either. His curiosity gets the best of him and he returns to watch the dragon in it's hideout, and a beautiful friendship emerges from a very messy situation. It doesn't happen often that a movie is better than the book, especially if the source material has been changed so drastically, but HTTYD pulls it off. The first movie was also my introduction to fandom, and both movies have an incredibly special place in my heart. Fun fact: I actually am the OP of a pretty popular fandom headcannon and it makes me giggle every time I see it be mentioned in the HTTYD tag.

Inception - Obligatory action movie. Heist movie except sci-fi and also everyone is queer and sexy (no it's not canon but it is canon to me). Conman Leo DiCaprio breaks into rich boy Cilian Murphy's dreams to convince him to give up his father's business in exchange for getting his criminal file wiped clean so he can see his kids again. I love sad dads and I love mind games and I love high stakes and I love time fuckery and I love mentally ill women. Watch it if you also do.

Portrait of a Lady on Fire - Perfect. Showstopping. Incredible. Does not pass the reverse Bechdel test. It is so incredibly hearthbreaking and soft and tender. Period drama with lesbians. Painter Noémi Merlant is hired to pretend to be a companion to Adèle Haenel while secretly painting her portrait to be sent off to a man she is being married off to. There is betrayal and trust and community and lust and it's so gorgeous to look at. The attention to detail is incredible and I want to kiss Céline Sciamma for bringing this movie to my screen. I cry every time I watch it. Queer heartache done right.

The Lake House - I don't know if this movie is actually that good but to me it is perfect. Contractor Keanu Reeves moves into a gorgeous lake house (my dream home) and starts receiving letters addressed to the previous owner and doctor Sandra Bullock. When he gets a letter from her with her new address and sees it's to a building that's still in development, the two skeptics come to the conclusion they are living years apart and their post box is some sort of portal. They fall in love, things go wrong, things go right, and there is a dog!

Series

Orphan Black - Listen. Listen. LISTEN. Tatiana Maslany. Wow. She plays a dozen (if not more) clones and I still have a hard time believing they weren't all different people. Trouble kid forced to be an adult because she is a mother sees herself jump in front of a train and uhhhh has issues with that. She then discovers there are so many others like her, that they were a part of a cloning project and that she is a bit of a special case. There is a lot of plot I cannot summarize but it's deliciously queer (one of the main character clones is a lesbian as well as two prominent gay side characters and other minor queer and trans characters). Found family, questions of what it means to love and of morality, some wonderfully written character arcs and a decently satisfying end. First few episodes can be a bit hard to get into, but Tatiana Maslany is incredible and the show is totally worth it.

Adventure Time - This is a big comfort show for me, not only because Marceline and Princess Bubblegum were one of my first queer ships ever, but also because I enjoy this show just as much as an adult. No real main story line, you could watch individual episodes and still follow it. There are some heavy themes, but they are always handled so wonderfully and with a true sense of childlike wonder, and it makes me have faith in humanity again. Finn the Human and Jake the Dog go on adventures together in a gigantic fantasy land and meet lots of interesting figures. Even the evil characters get attention, compassion, screen time, and dignity. It's heartbreaking and beautiful and so so so good.

The Mentalist - Sorry, there is a cop show in here. Simon Baker is an ex 'psychic' grieving father and husband working as a consultant with the CBI. His boss, Robin Tunney, is so in love with him she looks stupid. It's basically a man who is too smart for his own good running around, being charming or extremely annoying, and an exhausted tough-love type of woman running around fixing his messes. Oh and they catch killers. I am a Patric Jane kinnie, sue me. Jane and Lisbon are also very Griddlehark to me, kind of a what could have been if they had been friends from the beginning.

Russian Doll - Have I ever mentioned how much I love Natasha Lyonne? This is a kind of sexier Groundhog Day, where Natasha Lyonne keeps dying and waking up in the bathroom of her friend throwing her a birthday party. She loses her mind in the midst of gorgeous scenes, seriously beautiful cinematography, and in sexy ass outfits. If you like mind fuckery, cinematography, and sexy women this is the show for you. It sure is the show for me.

Arcane - Speaking of gorgeous visuals, Arcane is a beast of a show with such an incredible and unique look. Also so many hot and/or gay women. There are a few men too, they're okay, I do like me a pathetic little guy so it works. But WOMEN. So many powerful, intelligent, cunning, courageous women. I have to admit that I remember very little of the storyline, but I do know that they took 'Manic Pixie Dream Girl', said "yes and", and made a truly incredible and multi dimensional character with Jinx, with fully fleshed out motivations and morals (or lack thereof), understandable but still properly wrong actions, and such incredible story building around her progressing mental troubles. Must watch.

The Sandman - This one is not technically an obsession I have ever had, but it is a great watch and rewatch. I adore Vivienne Acheampong as Lucienne and I adore Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer and I adore Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Death. I also love pretty much anything that comes out of Neil Gaiman's brain so that helps. Great casting is what makes this show a winner for me. Morpheus/Dream gets locked up by some insane guy trying to capture death to bring back his son and he spends the rest of the show dealing with the consequences of being gone for decades. Tom Sturridge is a wet cat of a man and I do like that a lot as well. Very pretty cinematography seals the deal.

Misc.

The Magnus Archives - Podcast wildcard. Horror and paranormal and delicious. I love voice actors so much and archivists are hot. Becoming something you didn't choose and dealing with the repercussions of no longer really being human is so !!!!!!! I love it when people just go through the horrors. Everyone's voices scratch something in my brain that nothing else can reach. Brilliant piece of media.

What Remains of Edith Finch - Game wildcard. Semi-sandbox semi-railroad narrative. Gorgeous visual representations of so many difficult things in life. Particularly, the bit where one of Edith's family members loses himself to his own imagination is so gorgeous and heartbreaking. I have written essays on the cinematography of this game. It is so beautiful. Whether you lay it or watch a playthrough, you have to witness this.

Thanks @verba-writing for the ask, sorry for the wait I was busy at work but I did try my best to answer some of the questions when I got some breathing rooms.

1. What kind of readers would be fans of your WIP?

I would say mostly fans of medieval fantasy, probably D&D fans who are seeking something with low magic aswell, and possibly (but this one I'm not quite sure)  those who like stories more like slice of life, "The Eternal Throne" even tho it has some actions scenes is not a novel involving high stakes, is more like a chill and emotional adventure.

7. You’ve published or shared your WIP and it develops rabid fandom. What’s the fandom known for?

Probably in first contact, for discussing about which ship with the MC is canon (there's a lot of room for interpretation on that front), and also for discussing what is the true ending (because I'm gonna put a really big cliffhanger in the end and NOBODY CAN STOP ME NOW), but in general I hope is a welcoming and supportive fandom cause the message of the novel is how difficult sometimes being yourself can be but how important that decision is.

10. Which scene from your WIP would make good fanart fodder?

Probably the eulogy scene from Chapter 9: "The Widow", which is a heartbreaking scene. Also the last goodbye in Chapter 10: "The Maid", another emotional and hearthbreaking scene. And hopefully, if everything goes right, the final confrontation from Chapter 5: "The Smuggler", and I say hopefully because I don't know if I'm gonna be able to portrait how badass and threatening the antagonist in that story is.

I'm not sure which but I would take some just in case.

Day 25 - Saddest anime death

Oh my God, how can I choose?! I'm really tenderhearted, so I cry for everything. Every anime death punches me really hard.

However, after a mindful reflection, these are my choices.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood: Maes Hughes' death

He was an amazing character! He didn't long for power or anything like that. He was the happiest man in the world because he had everything he wanted: a beautiful family and caring friends (I think that if Hughes had seen how Roy reacted to his death, he would have been moved, perhaps making fun of him).

Hughes always thought of others, not only his family: he welcomed into his home the Elric brothers and Winry, he decided to help Roy achieve his goal. Until the end he thought about the sake of others: he decided to call Roy from a phone booth because he knew that someone was after him and didn't want to involve his colleagues; when Envy attacked him he wasn't scared of dying, but he was sad beacuse he had been unable to keep the promise to his wife and his daughter, the most precious people for him.

And the scene of his funeral...God, it was heartbreaking! Elicia...you made me cry until all the fluids of my body dried up! This little baby didn't deserve that!

Even if Hughes seemed to be goofy, nosy and also a little annoying, he was a great character, a gentle and cheerful person that it's impossible not to love. He was a dazzling light in a world of darkness and corruption, a lifeline for so many characters (first of all Roy Mustang).

With his naivety and kindness he made himself loved. Even King Bradley (one of the main villains and then indirectly responsible of his death) was shaking during his funeral.

In short, Maes Hughes was the last person who deserved to die. But even if it's sad, this brave choice is one of the main reasons of the beauty of this series.

Psycho Pass: Shuusei Kagari's death

I have watched many blue anime and hearthbreaking death, so this choice may not seem the saddest. But let me explain.

First of all, Kagari is one of my favorite Psycho Pass' characters and I think he deserved more screen time.

He seemed a naive, childish and careless person, but his character was more complex than this.

He was only five when he became a latent criminal, so he didn't even have the opportunity to know the world, the real one. He lived his whole life locked in a cage. For this reason, unlike Kogami, Masaoka and Kunizuka (and of course also many other latent criminals), he seemed to accetp more easly his condiction of latent criminal and Enforcer, because unilke the others he knew only that world, he didn't know what exatly he was missing!

For this reason he got angry with Akane: he had high expectations about the real world and so he was envious of her ostensible freedom, therefore he couldn't stand her complaining.

But despite envy, he became someone very similar to a friends for her; despite envy he never tried to rebel against the Sibyl System, even if he hated it. In spite of everything, he has always been "faithful" to that system that has caged him. Like a real hunting dog.

"Don't make me laugh. Both you and I are trash who simply envy the happiness others have."

He called himself trash, as if he was agreed with the judgment of Sibyl System about himself. As if it was right that he was rated as latent criminal. MY POOR BOY!

But his faithful and his obedience didn't save him.

He died by the hand of that damned system. Like a father that kills his child, or like a owner that kills his dog.

But the saddest thing is that he died alone. There was nothing left of him, as if he never existed. He was literally deleted, erased.

It's so unfair.

To make matters worse, officially he wasn't dead, but he took advantage of the situation to run away, abandoning his companions.

He would never have done such a thing! He didn't deserve all that!!!

And his smile at that moment...IT'S SO UNFAIR!!!

I can't. Too many memories. Too many feels.

I hope I managed to explain myself well enough.

Is this really what we wanted? My posts are getting long recently, but i put fanarts between texts, so don't get scared with wall of words xD Just in case someone is afraid to look - i make fun from candy twice and then again make someone cry. I knew Lys parents would die(i would be surprised if they didn't), but to think we can't support him... argh, the fuck is that. I wanted to hear it was difficult for him, but he had his hight school girfriend, old candy, with him during that bad time. Ok, fine, it is enjoyable to my little evil heart, drawing tears and people getting hurt, but no. 

No. I was thinking that oh, maybe she got one in a lifetime chance to study abroad, maybe she got into really good university somewhere far away, they just couldn't study near each other... but no. She had to move with her parents. So Nathaniel can live alone, Castiel is doing fine, but lil candy have to follow her parents after high school. Did we broke up because she can't cook or do laundry by herself? I'm telling you, i would stay with aunt. Aunt loves me. 

And now, it took 4 years to prepare candy for living in dangerous enviroment called campus.  I know Candy is an idiot, but there are some limits. Stop. Don't jump over them. Candy, come back! D: 

  It feels like we betrayed them all without our own consent and that was not enjoyable at all. It's all your fault candy, so many means to stay in contact with your beloved friends and you just abandoned them. I guess if she made friends during that 4 year gap she already forgot about them on her way to new university. 

I was thinking candy is an idiot many times during playing, but it's first time i actually despise her. Seriously, Rosa, why would you still want to know this lil shit? I honestly don't want all old boys to come back. I just don't wan't to play my old candy knowing all her relatioships were fucked up. I'll try to play new candy, even if it's difficult when they are like "YOU stopped contacting us, bitch" :C 

And i'll think Castiel and Nathaniel are in relationship(...like i always did :D)

But hey, there are still things more hearthbreaking than breaking up with candy...  Demon dying?

Could happen. Castiel getting back to being unbearable would be less annoying if i knew that. Just imagine, Demon dying while protecting Castiel from crazy fan! Sorry if you cry with me now, but i had to draw it or i wouldn’t get it out of my head.

Hello Brawny, I'm not sure if you noticed it in the past but it seems as though Equestria seems to have a good grasp on the science of geology mostly from the terms used in the episode episode Hearthbreakers (such as Moh's Hardness Scale & Extrusive Andesite). As a geology major myself I'm curious what's your opinions on this.

I think that geology, math and Spanish are the reasons I almost didn’t graduate high school.  So regardless of how accurate they were or even if they told me all the rocks in Equestria were made out of toffee, I probably wouldn’t know the difference.  

I also think that any good writer will either combine what they know with what they’re writing and/or research a subject in order to be able to write a character properly.

But that’s all I have to say about that.  Thank you for pointing it out to me regardless.

The Ostania Kingdom and Westfalis Duchedom(???different system to show the theoretical difference between the two???)/ is on the verge of war and for political reasons the WISE decided that YEAHH we can DEFINITELY do spy stuff in the Middle of the Forest in the Semi-Middle Ages. Disguised as dwarfs. disguise made by grumpy Franky who just about having the worst hangover of his life after a hearthbreak, so noone had the heart to say that the disguise is nothing like a dwarf, and over the weeks turned months they start to believe that dwarfs actually look like them. :D i just want to see some wise family time in their whakky ways.

Nightfall was about to point out that no dwarf would look like a them, but Sylvia and Twilight was immedietly shutting her up cause give Franky a break.

so. the Wise is spying in the forest for months when the princess of the opposite kingdom just barges into their house without a problem.

once again the question is: does Anya still have her esper abilities or not.

depending on the hilarity of a panicking WISE agency and a princess needed, they come to a conclusion.

option 1, Anya is an esper: she blackmails the WISE to let them hang around whenever she wants to.

option 2, Anya is not an esper: WISE somehow escorts Anya back to the closest city (Twilight) where the Queen is frantically searching for her daughter (que Twilight Thorn Queen interaction of epic battle of a furious mother against a thought-to-be-kidnapper and then.... then Anya decides to save Twilight’s life if she can, cause he was pretty cool for the past day he was with her so it would be a pity if Maa killed him.)

plus stuff to just squeeze Daybreak and Damian in:

sooo.... Daybreak as the most eager hunter/castle guard to search for Anya but just messes up everything? or something whacky like that?

Damian is either a noble in line to be a possible fiancé candidate for Anya when the time comes, or a foreign prince so it can be a bit more of a Snow White turned generic Brother Grimm Fairy Tale AU, cause then

Franky or Daybreak or both can mess it up soooo bad.

Okay.

so. Twilight has an epic fight with the Queen of Thorns, in the meantime Daybreak is soo happy cause he found the princess, grabs her to bring her back to the castle

BUT

Nightfall was tailing Twilight and is joining on the fight to help

and Franky was dragged along and sees that someone just kidnapped the princess so tries to help and goes after Daybreak

chaos ensured Anya gets lost once again in the forest but can’t even go back to the Wise, and then she’s found by prince Damien. who is spooked and bewitched and just has no idea what the hell he’s supposed to do.

so

for Snow White-ish AU when Anya gets lost in the chaos, she falls from some high place where she falls into a coma like state, Franky finds her, brings back to Wise, Sylvia decides to keep her there trying to wake/heal her.

in the meantime Yor and Twilight in the middle of the fight realize Anya isn’t there decide on a truce and go searching together but thanks to Daybreak they go the wrong direction: cue a Twilight Nightfall Daybreak Thorn Queen banter on the go.

and prince Damian just strolls in the forest cause he’s lost as well while playing/hunting with Becky (a noble from their kingdom duchery whatever) founds the Wise hideout (Sylvia is having a silent breakdown just how awful their hideout is) and cue magic kiss that was actually uncalled for cause it was a bump on the head but oh well.

For a different fairy tale au from the forest Anya can live with Damian but never tell she’s a princess. are you familiar with this trope? mysterious bride reunited with parent at wedding/engagement? no? okay.

so Anya knows about the pending war so she’s tooo afraid to tell Damian she’s the missing princess, the crisis is huge but Sylvia is able to smooth it down (also Twilight might have a bit of a... just the tiniest influence in the Queen?) so there’s no war but the tensions are still high. Queen Yor spends all her time searching for her daughter, just so nothing happens (FoR wOrLd PeAcE) Twilight accompanies her most of the time (Nightfall and Daybreak lurking along because of personal reasons) so some bonding there, and at the same time bonding between Damian and Anya and Becky (and Anya’s new pet Bond? )

we can stretch it out for years (Nightfall or Daybreak messing up the clues accidentally or intentionally everytime Yor or Twilight gets close) or leave it for only some days fairy tale style.

ending is an effin fluff-wholesome-parody of a bunch.

so announcements are sent to Yor that prince Damian is engaged so in hopes of good faith she should attend. Twilight reassures her that it’s a good idea.

They arrive and VOILA: Anya’s there alive and well and loved. happy end

Forger Spookfest HC’s #3 - The Snow White AU

(Idk how many I’m planning to do of these, I’m just surprised at how active my brainstorming is these days)

Okay, so this one isn’t really spookish as the others, but just bear with me on this.

Princess Starlight Anya (I thought about naming her ‘Snow Anya’, but since Snow it’s about her appearance, I like to think 'Starlight’ it’s about how her eyes shine bright like starlight (@lacrow I’m looking at you and your fantasy AU with my baby Damian)) lives with her oh so scary and spooky lady of the darkness/ evil stepmother Queen Yor Briar who also happens to be a witch. But she’s not actually evil, people just think this because she’s a total badass and may or may not kill enemies with poisonous needles but that’s another story. People in the castle also gossip that surely the Queen is trying to kill the Princess considering she’s always cooking her weird things that make Anya go green. They don’t understand that Yor is just a ridiculously bad cook, but Anya knows it and tries her best to not spit it out everytime.

One day hungry Anya peeps into Yor’s lab/potion room and finds her experimenting on some odd apple pie recipe. Ugh, nope, this won’t do, she’ll find edible food somewhere else.

Anya ventures into the forest to look for tree nuts and gets lost, finally taking refuge in a secluded cottage in the woods. She ends the house’s stock of snacks and fall asleep, completely ignoring how her stepmother must be flipping her sh*t back in the castle like “WHERE THE HELL IS MY DAUGHTER”. Magic mirror Yuri doesn’t have a say on anything.

Now, this is the part where I don’t know who would be the dwarfs, so let’s pick two takes:

1 - They are several definitely-too-tall-to-be-dwarfs dwarfs (elfs then?), with pointy hats and everything, and they are basically Twilight + other WISE agents who are like. So confused at why the crown princess is at their seemingly not so secret base. Don’t know any more about it.

2 - They are kids from Eden Academy and Damian totally is Grumpy here, refusing to let this weirdo who just invaded their home stay as if it’s not a big thing. Becky is the boss so she says that Anya will stay because yep, she said so. Loid is the king coming back from the war to find his wife disheveled and crying because “I’m so sorry, Loid, I lost your daughter, I can’t cook at all, I’m such a bad mother, please don’t divorce me”. Loid is exhausted from the trip and can’t even guess why Yor was trying to cook in the first place, she’s a queen. Later he’d find out she’d do it out of her own will and the servants were too scared to be against it. Anyway, Loid leads a searching party through the kingdom, finds Anya, ground her with no second thoughts, go back to the castle, heads to the royal chambers and promptly flops into the bed face first, lowkey hoping he would get to sleep eight full hours before the East and West kingdoms went against each other’s throats again.

Then Yor wakes him up with a true love kiss The End
