#hearing the black eyed peas or lady gaga

music nostalgia is so fascinating because i listened to a pretty wide range of music growing up with a combo of what was currently popular, what my parents listened to, and classical music, but the latter two exist on a completely different nostalgia level to the first group, which feels like.. True Nostalgia as opposed to Neutral Nostalgia if i try and put it into words

1/? ive seen you discussing music/songs/singing etc in regards to arthur/eames a few times so i thought i'd share this thought i had earlier today...what if every time they go under with arthur as the dreamer eames catches snippets of love songs playing in the background (or vice versa but i totally headcanon arthur as being the music aficionado & his taste in music has RANGE. like he listens to everything from billie holiday to lady gaga to bruce springsteen to abba to limp bizkit etc
2/? anyway.. arthur and eames standing side by side in a dream observing the mark, just the two of us plays somewhere, next time it's everywhere by fleetwood mac, then kiss me by sixpence none the richer, then meet me halfway by the black eyed peas (listen it's a banger. also ever since i reheard an old song by them and heard them mention inception in it i've found myself being quite fond of them), lovely day by bill withers, fantasy by mariah carey, heatwaves by glass animals, crazy little
3/? thing called love by queen... the list goes on... and then it's like the baader meinhof phenomenon where it starts passing over to real life. eames watching arthur walking away after splitting up after a successful job: ain't no sunshine plays in the bar where he's sipping his drink. after answering a call from arthur which eames only realises after he's hung up wasn't even job related and was simply a catch up- stevie wonder's i just called to say i love you starts playing on the car
4/4 radio. after a long time without a job together, eames walks into a warehouse and the minute his eyes meet arthur's across the room it must be love by the madness starts tinnily playing on ariadne's playlist. anyway. i love music and i love them so!
---
Nonnie I am making a note of all of these, I am obsessed with the idea that one of them might hear snippets of love songs both in dreams and in life, especially if they are the dreamer - like our brains are so whacky and our subconscious seems so unique and out of our control who's to say this couldn't happen? (Now I'm imagining someones projections breaking out into song and the dreamer telling them, embarrassedly, to shut up) aha - this is so brilliant!!! I must know if they keep hearing songs when Arthur and Eames get together!

Interesting playlist choices, Nugget isn't very familiar with what fits "White Girl Bangers", but it'll definitely add to the chaos of the courting battle👍
🐦‍⬛
Basically things like Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, Bruno Mars, Smash Mouth, etc.
If it's a love song and a pop song pre 2014, it's probably there
And now that I think about it I'm pretty sure that's just his regular playlist tbh
The second round (survivors of the first round) will get to hear my personal playlist

What are some recent songs that remind you (the mun not Mantis) of the GOTG?
Thank you for sending this in, I love it! Also yes, I consider these songs recent. Fight me.
🪐 WALK THE MOON - Shut Up And Dance
"Oh don't you dare look back, just keep your eyes on me" / I said, "You're holding back" / She said, "Shut up and dance with me"
🪐 Taio Cruz - Hangover
I got an empty cup, pour me some more / So I can go until I blow up, eh / And I can drink until I throw up, eh / And I don't ever ever want to grow up, eh / I wanna keep it going
🪐 Lady Gaga - Applause
I live for the applause, applause, applause / I love for the applause-plause, live for the applause-plause / Live for the way that you cheer and scream for me, the applause, applause, applause
🪐 Kesha - We R Who We R
You know we're superstars, we are who we are / DJ turn it up, it's about damn time to live it up / I'm so sick of being so serious / It's making my brain delirious
🪐 Fun. - Some Nights
What do I stand for? / What do I stand for? / Most nights I don't know / So this is it? I sold my soul for this? / Washed my hands of that for this? / I miss my mom and dad for this? / No, when I see stars, when I see– / When I see stars that's all they are / When I hear songs they sound like a swan
🪐 Black Eyed Peas - Meet Me Halfway
I travel 'round the world and even sail the seven seas / Across the universe and all the other galaxies / Just tell me where to go, just tell me where you wanna meet / I navigate myself, myself to take me where you be

As someone who loves pop, I think 1989 is a mid album and I don’t understand why it’s supposed to have changed the music industry? I don’t get what’s revolutionary about it? I love Blank Space and Wildest Dreams, but I feel “meh” about most of the other songs. I don’t like Style as much as everyone does, OOTW is catchy but compared to other Taylor songs it probably doesn’t even make it to the Top 100? I don’t know, I don’t get it.
I also feel like they’re the kind of songs that you get tired of and that never goes away? For example, I got a feeling by the Black Eyed Peas, that’s I song I grew tired of in like 2010 and I’m still tired of it. But Take me to church is a song I was tired of in 2014 and, while I wouldn’t go out of my way to listen to it, I’m not tired of it now. Lady Gaga’s songs from 2009 might have been overplayed but they hold up. 1989 doesn’t really hold up for me?
yeah I just don’t like that album. I love Blank Space a lot, WD is okay but I don’t love it, I find OOTW annoying because it’s just one thing repeated over and over and over (kinda catchy but eh), obviously SIO/WTNY/Bad Blood/IWYW are actively shitty songs lol like they’re BAD not even mid like actively dreadful, This Love is like BAD middle school poetry but I guess set to a pretty tune, Wonderland is kinda fun, Clean and YAIL are pretty but not like anywhere near my top favorite songs of any artist and DEFINITELY not Taylor because the first like 20 spots of my favorite songs at any point are Taylor songs lol. I also kinda like New Romantics maybe a bit more than Clean and YAIL even but I’ve never added it to a playlist either. If I hear it I’m like “oh yeah I like this song” but then that’s about it. The vault was marginally better but not by a lot. I like Slut! (not as much as Blank Space and I think they were right to pick that one). There were a few others I think I liked a bit but I’ve not added any to my playlists and I just went to look at them and I can’t remember how some go which is nuts because I can sing any Taylor song by heart lol.
so like no I don’t dislike Haylor the real relationship - obviously I dislike conspiracist Haylors but like them as a pairing that happened I’ve nothing against - but I actively dislike all the music ever made about it except Maroon if that’s about Harry (and I picture it being about Harry lol)!

favourite song: september - earth, wind and fire
yaku - a bit of everything but he has an inexplicable fondness for midwest emo despite never having had an emo phase
favourite song: blue eyes like the devil’s water - mccafferty
inuoka - probably pretty similar to tanaka and noya but more wholesome if that makes sense??
favourite song: growl - exo
FUKURODANI
bokuto - either genuinely amazing songs or the stupidest stuff he could find in the depths of the internet (once akaashi caught him unironically listening to the “cat, im a kitty cat” song from like 2008)
favourite song: juice - lizzo
akaashi - very mellow, almost bittersweet songs. like konoha has looked through his spotify and was quite concerned
favourite song: talking to the moon - bruno mars
konoha - probably pretty similar to kuroo’s music taste tbh
favourite song: gives you hell - all-american rejects
SHIRATORIZAWA
ushijima - honestly he probably doesnt listen to much music unless tendou makes him but he has a couple of rlly old songs that he likes
favourite song: what a wonderful world - louis armstrong
tendou - one look at this man’s spotify n you KNOW he’s unhinged, like his playlists are the embodiment of mental illness
favourite song: lights out - mindless self indulgence
goshiki - aw he thinks he’s so cool, he has the playlists of a 13 yr old who just developed an individuality complex and honestly i love that for him
favourite song: bang bang - green day

Hello! I just found your blog and I'm looking forward to your content.
I've been itching to ask the question: what genres of music (or what present day musicians) do you think the Stawhats or members of the Supernova trio would listen to? I feel like this might be a tricky question though. I don't mind if you pick and choose who to answer for. Thanks for considering.
I love this question because I love music! You do not understand how happy I am to get this question!
Music Genres/Artists the Strawhats Listen to (Headcanons)
Tumblr media
Luffy
In my post → here I had two songs that fit Luffy
The music he listens to is upbeat or ones that give good vibes so it's quite the mixture of genres
He won't remember artists, he'll just hear a song come on and say "Oh I know this song"
When he listens to music he wants to have a fun time and be able to smile
So songs like Staying Alive or Can't Hold Us
Totally would listen to We Are The Champions
You are deeply mistaken if you think he won't listen to Macarena and Cha Cha Slide, he will play that every time someone is playing music
Caramelldancing
I think Luffy would go to rave concerts, just having a good time being himself
And yes, he does listen to Sandstorm, Crab Rave, and Popcorn
Zoro
Eminem, that's the first artist that came to mind when I thought of Zoro, mainly because of the song I'm Not Afraid
He mainly listens to workout remixes since the dude lifts weight a lot
When he's not working out, he prefers music he can just nod his head to
Like Never Going Back or Burn The House Down
Doesn't like anything heavy/hardcore, it's too much for him
He's fine listening to pop if one of his friends is playing it
Secretly has a guilty pleasure of listening to Lady Gaga but no one will ever find out
Oh, this is a new genre I found but Zoro would listen to Lofi Hip Hop
Nami
Pop & Hip Hop are this girl's main genres
"It's Britney, bitch"
She listens to Britney Spears, Katy Perry, Rihanna, Ke$ha, Nicki Minaj, Beyoncé, Iggy Azalea-
Not a fan of Taylor Swift but she likes the song "Look What You Made Me Do"
This girl listens to The Pussycat Dolls (yes that is an actual girl band if you didn't know)
Also listens to the girl band Little Mix
Songs that just make her feel like badass bitch
Hidden secret but she likes the band KISS
When sitting down to work on creating maps she'll have study music playing in the background
Usopp
Cats In The Cradle
I just- go listen to it, you'll understand why it's here
Usopp's taste is a lot like Luffy only he also can have songs that can make you cry or get you in the feels: Viva La Vida, Hey There Delilah
He listens to a lot of oldies
Guns & Roses, Queen, The Beetles, Nickelback, Elvis
You can't tell me he wouldn't sing Can't Help Falling In Love to Kaya
Absolutely would listen to the Black Eyed Peas & Maroon 5
Also would listens to Geometry Dash OST
Sanji
Is a complete sucker for love songs
Doesn't matter if it's by a male or female
You name it he has it
Payphone, Counting Stars, E.T., We Found Love, Cake By The Ocean, Mr. Saxobeat, Bad Romance, Made For Lovin' You
Also a big fan of Elvis Presley
Likes to vibe to the song Hound Dog
Sanji would be into smooth jazz
And dinner music
Anything classy Sanji will listen to
Don't forget he listens to songs from Equestria Girls thanks to Chimney
Chopper
Minecraft Parodies and MLP songs because it is kid-friendly for Chopper
He also will vibe with anything Luffy and Usopp listen to
Is not allowed to listen to anything Nami has in her playlist
Will listen to therapeutic music for animals
Robin
Another one who loves classic music
Really, any kind of classical music
From ones you hear in fancy restaurants to background ost you hear in horror shit to sad rainy day melodies
The violin and piano are truly amazing instruments
Robin prefers music without the lyrics because the rhythm of it has a story to tell and you can feel the emotion the musician is trying to express through their instrument
Franky
Franky loves funky music, and ones you can jam out to in the car
Memorized Life is a Highway and We Didn't Start The Fire
Disco, Rock, Electronic, and Metal are Franky's favourite genres
Definitely listens Ozzy Osbourne, Rob Zombie, KISS, Guns & Roses, Elvis, and AC/DC
He is the one that introduced Usopp to the great oldies
Certain alternative and grunge bands he can listen to like Foo Fighters, The Offspring, and Nirvana
Brook
The King of Music
He is the Soul King
This skeleton listens to anything and considers anything to be music
You know that video someone made of using mayonnaise as an instrument? That is on Brook's playlist (here's the link if you want to listen to it)
He loves all music and accepts all music
Is the friend you go to if you need the name of an artist or song, he's an encyclopedia for music
Will not judge you for your taste in music and will be the only friend you can count on to jam out to any song with you
Jinbei
I for some reason can visualize him listening to the band SIAMÉS (specifically their album Home)
Mainly because they make good vibe music
Which is what Jinbei would listen to
Vibe music
Aquatic or sea like music
Would join Zoro in listening to Lofi Hip-Hop music
When it comes to lyrics, he wants it clean, made with real emotion, and be able to understand what the words are
This took longer than I expected to finish but it was worth it! I am 1000% making a part 2 for the Supernovas so stay tuned, and thank you for sending in the request

what kind of music do you think the aot characters listen to in a modern au? everyone on tiktok says eren would be an eminem fan
NOT EMINEM... do they say that because eminem is like, angry rap 😭😭 that’s funny, and honestly, I kind of see it, but I would more so see him listening to more r&b and .... political? (if that’s the right word) rap music. Not that Eminem doesn’t have that, but I don’t know enough of his music to fairly judge I suppose. Anyways, here’s the rest of my thots!
EREN: Aside from his general vengeance drive, Eren’s character is centered around anger, yes, but towards injustice and inequality in his state, imposed by other people with power... That boy is going to eat J.Cole and Kendrick Lamar right up. (Am I projecting a little bit? Maybe, but I’m right, too 😌😌). Other than them, I think he’d like rap in general. Probably listens to Drake from time to time, definitely a Lil Uzi Vert fan. Classic Jay-Z, too.
But don’t get it twisted, when he’s not upset about power and privilege, he’s a hot boy, and he does hot boy shit. Also, this should go without saying, but everyone loves Beyoncé. I won’t tolerate them not liking her. But Eren fucks heavy with Rihanna, too. ANTi is on his most played albums every year 😭
ARMIN: He strikes me as the kind of person to give anything a listen, at least once. Definitely the kind of guy who has a playlist of classical music to help him study when he needs to. Really in awe of people with incredible vocal ranges: Mariah Carey, Adele, Beyoncé. Down with pop music, too, and definitely music in other languages; a little bit of a language barrier isn’t going to stop him.
JEAN: He is also a hot boy, and does hot boy shit (ah), I absolutely will not debate, he has a crush on Megan, as he absolutely should 😌 Frank Ocean, Childish Gambino, and a lot of other rappers like I mentioned for Eren, too. Here’s the wildcard, though: secret High School Musical fan. Knows the third soundtrack by heart from start to finish.
MIKASA: On the outside, quite... mellow? Nothing out of the ordinary, listens to relatively popular artists, and is pretty good at keeping up with new music. On the low, is about that City Girl shit. Hand her the mic when a Nicki Minaj song is on during karaoke, and she’ll chew you up. Other people to mention: Lizzo, Rihanna, Selena Quintanilla, Big Sean.
LEVI: Again, I don’t think anything out of the ordinary. Not the best at keeping up with new releases, but if you recommend something to him, he’ll listen to it at least once. I know Stromae only has one album, but I think Levi would like it. Solange, Rihanna, Jhene Aiko, Janelle Monae, Michael Jackson, more recent Jay-Z, sometimes The Weeknd. And, as I’ve mentioned, Beyoncé; but, like, a lot. Levi could be president of the Beyhive on the low.
ERWIN (suprise): His playlists are the most all over the place, but hear me out... he really likes pop music. But think of, like, early 2000s pop music; Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream kind of pop, Lady Gaga all the way, a sprinkle of Bruno Mars. Co-president of the Beyhive, along with Levi. But I can also see him relaxing to r&b music, too; Michael Jackson, Destiny’s Child, Christina Aguilera ballads.
HANGE: If you want to talk about someone who will listen to absolutely anything, then we need to talk about Hange. Everything from Doja Cat to The Neighbourhood. Constantly searching for new music and obscure Spotify playlists. I feel like she wouldn’t be a big Drake fan LOL. Probably very into kpop because there’s so much to offer, and musical soundtracks. Not things like “Les Mis” or “Hamilton,” more on the side of shows like “West Side Story” and “Wicked.”
SASHA: Once she gets a hold of Glee covers, it’s over for everyone. Sings them loudly, and pretends she’s in an acapella group. Most female artists are her cup of tea, too. For some reason, I can’t help but think she would like... slightly punk pop music? I don’t know if I’m describing it right, but, like, Avril Lavigne and P!nk, and even some Lady Gaga songs. Dua Lipa’s most recent album reminds me of her.
CONNIE: Why do I get such strong Black Eyed Peas energy from that boy oh my god... This isn’t a specific artist or even genre but, music that gives off “Tik Tok” by Kesha vibes LOL. Songs like “Like a G6,” “Sk8er Boy,” and “Fergalicious” 😭😭 But also challenges himself to learn really fast rap verses. Absolutely red in the face after trying either of Megan’s verses in WAP, but it was worth it. Screams “ANOTHER ONE” and “DJ KHALED” very loudly at the beginning of any DJ Khaled song.

Top 12 Personal Favorite Hit Songs from 2013
Tumblr media
The best year in a trio of awesome years for hits. So awesome, in fact, I had to leave several excellent songs out of the list, even with two additional slots, and limit the list to songs I actually put on my mp3 player at one point or another.
What’s that? People usually call it a bad year? Well screw them.
Disclaimers:
Keep in mind I’m using both the year-end top 100 lists from the US and from France while making these top 10 things. There’s songs in English that charted in my country way higher than they did in their home countries, or even earlier or later, so that might get surprising at times.
Of course there will be stuff in French. We suck. I know. It’s my list. Deal with it.
My musical tastes have always been terrible and I’m not a critic, just a listener and an idiot.
I have sound to color synesthesia which justifies nothing but might explain why I have trouble describing some songs in other terms than visual ones.
The year I stopped working in Paris, found a job closer to home that finally made me feel helpful in the grand scheme of things, and I finally had more free time. Goodbye daily trains. I also went to some concerts! This never happened before.
2013: also the year when just about every band and artist I liked decided to make a good album. Except Depeche Mode. Depeche Mode made Delta Machine. It wasn’t great. But, uh, let’s see, Placebo made Loud Like Love (with the fantastic A Million Little Pieces), VNV Nation made Transnational, Daft Punk made Random Access Memories... Nine Inch Nails came back with Hesitation Marks, which is pretty great with a couple of fantastic songs. Lady Gaga made the vastly underrated ArtPop! Even Eminem made a pretty decent album! Eminem! In the year of our lord 2013! And The 1975 made their debut album. They would eventually become one of my favorite bands of the 2010s, but not yet, though. And Indochine redeemed themselves by releasing Black City Parade, their absolute best album of the decade.
However, despite Indochine’s excellent effort and the return of Nine Inch Nails, the album of the year, at least to me, was Kveikur by Sigur Rós. At that point, I had been following their stuff for ten years, and this album still blew my goddamn mind. It’s so heavy and dark and so different from what they had been doing since Agaetis Byrjun. It’s loud and textured and industrial and yet, there’s so much light above the dark. They out-NIN’ed Nine Inch Nails. There isn’t a single track I don’t love on this album. It’s their best one in my humble opinion.
Tumblr media
As far as unelligible songs go, boy, where do I start. Uh. Copy of A and Came Back Haunted (Nine Inch Nails), certainly, A Million Little Pieces (Placebo) as I already mentioned, Memoria and College Boy (Indochine - I’m actually shocked they aren’t on the French top 100), Chocolate by The 1975, and most infuriating of all, Castle of Glass by Linkin Park, which is imho their best song of the 2010s. Oh well.
But there’s still a shit ton of stuff which was elligible but didn’t make the list. Here’s a lot of honorable mentions. There were like ten more of them initially, mind you.
Sirens Call (Cats On Trees) - You know how in just about every top ten post I’ve made so far, there’s a song where I’m like “if I had better taste this would be higher”? This is this song for 2013.
Don’t You Worry Child (Swedish House Mafia) - Catchy but borderline annoying. Still very good.
Counting Stars (One Republic) - This is so happy and catchy. More songs like this nowadays, please.
I Cry (Flo Rida) - Still elligible. Still great. Still not on the list.
Ho Hey (The Lumineers) - Same thing here, sadly.
Animals (Martin Garrix) - I called Bangarang from the previous list a perfect stim song, and this is in the same ballpark. Not as good, but great shapes and colors all around.
Berserk (Eminem) - That song has a lot of really bad lines, but also a lot of much needed energy, it’s a ton of fun, and I love the “say f█ck it before you kick the bucket” part of the chorus. I was so glad to hear Eminem having fun again. Would certainly have made the list in a more mediocre year. Not the most infuriating thing I had to leave out of the list, though.
Radioactive (Imagine Dragons) - THIS IS IT THE APOCALYPSE OH WOHO no I don’t have anything intelligent to say, it’s just great.
Best Song Ever (One Direction) - This is my favorite song from that band. It might be because it sounds suspiciously like Baba O’Riley. If you think I’m gonna complain about people ripping off good songs, please check my entry about I Gotta Feeling by The Black Eyed Peas a few top 10s before this one.
Wait. Waiiit. What if the “best song ever” they can’t remember in the lyrics WAS Baba O’Riley?? Wouldn’t that be the best meta song ever? What do you think? I mean, that one could indeed claim the title of best song ever.
Get Lucky (Daft Punk) - I know. I know. But I couldn’t put it on the list. It’s not my favorite song from the album, it was overplayed, and even if it’s extremely good it stays roughly at the same level for the entirety of the song. I love it, but I had to draw the line somewhere and cut the list. I didn’t want to make another top 15.
Carry On (fun.) - This was the last cut from the list. It was a really painful one. Not my favorite song from them, but still very, very good.
There’s been lists where I had to put filler. If I had to put actual grades to them, some songs I put on some lists would get a 6/10 or even a 5/10 for really bad years (looking at you 1990). Sometimes, I had to put stuff I’d grade 7/10 as high as #3.
If I had to grade this 2013 list according to my personal taste in music, #12 would get an 8/10, #11 would get a 9/10, and everything in the top ten would either be a 9,5 or a 10. No joke. That’s how good that year was for hits.
Let’s go.
12 - My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark (Light’Em Up) (Fall Out Boy)
US: #40 / FR: Not on the list
Tumblr media
There you have it. Three songs from a band I consider pretentious asshats ended on my lists. Including this one, in a year where I decided to severely limit my options for songs. And at the time? I thought it was just an okay song, way too slow but okay. Not great. At all.
It took it about three whole years to grow on me, and it also took me a while to actually know what it was about, and as I said previously, framing is everything ; knowing this song basically said “we’re back, and we’ve changed, and you’re not gonna like it so you’re gonna feel betrayed and you’re gonna burn your old posters, and in the end you’re also gonna betray us” makes it a lot, lot better. I especially love the “Burn everything you love then burn the. ashes” line with the weird pause for emphasis.
It just goes stomp, stomp, stomp. It’s heavy. You can’t dance to it. You can’t even have fun while listening to it. But you can certainly stomp along, and feel angry, and, yes, betrayed, and three years after 2013, I certainly needed that kind of song. A lot. You know exactly why.
11 - Burn (Ellie Goulding)
US: Not on the list / FR: #54
Tumblr media
I discovered Doctor Who at the very, very end of 2013, and for some reason I associate this song with Martha’s journey during the year that never was at the end of S3, trying to convince the entire Earth to fight back against the Master. That’s all I have to say about this song. It’s great.
10 - Instant Crush (Daft Punk ft Julian Casablancas)
US: Not on the list / FR: #26
Tumblr media
So yep, Get Lucky isn’t my favorite song on Random Access Memories, and thank you French charts for allowing me to put this one on the list instead.
Like a ton of people, I couldn’t figure out what the chorus was, apart from a couple of isolated words, and that felt exactly like being 10 and trying to decipher songs with my limited English. And then I checked the lyrics, and they were mostly variations on “I don’t want to be alone” and they rhyme “go” with “go”, so, uh, nothing of value was lost that day. And it still sounds fantastic.
9 - Applause (Lady Gaga)
US: #37 / FR: #66
Tumblr media
Yes, there’s some really stupid shit in the lyrics and the theme of the song itself isn’t particularly inspiring, but that chorus is a happy burst of fuzzy bright angular shapes, and it’s so energetic it feels like you could phase through walls by sheer force of will while listening to it. It would be even higher if the lyrics were better, I swear.
8 - Papaoutai (Stromae)
US: Not on the list / FR: #4
Tumblr media
And the boss of cleverly written hit songs strikes again. Pretty sure that one, like Alors On Danse, is well known even if you don’t speak French. As I understand it, apparently French teachers like to use it in class. But yeah, just in case: it’s a song about his absent father. My favorite part:
Un jour ou l'autre on sera tous papas (One day or another we’ll be dads) Et d'un jour à l'autre, on aura disparu (And one day or the next, we’ll be gone) Serons-nous détestables? (Will we be despicable?) Serons-nous admirables? (Will we be admirable?) Des géniteurs ou des génies (Parents or geniuses) Dites-nous qui donne naissance aux irresponsables? (Tell us who birthes irresponsible people?) Ah, dites-nous qui, tiens (Ah, tell us who ; weird) Tout le monde sait comment on fait des bébés (Everybody knows how to make babies) Mais personne ne sait comment on fait des papas (But nobody knows how to make dads)
And it’s also horribly catchy. And it was kind of a meme here. It was everywhere. I’m surprised it wasn’t even higher than that on the French year end top 100.
7 - Underwater (Mika)
US: Not on the list / FR: #70
Tumblr media
Why do I love this song so much even though I usually hate songs like that. This is the kind of romantic bullshit Robbie Williams does, and for the record I absolutely hate Angels, and Underwater even sounds a bit like Angels, and it also has the same kind of corny central metaphor. So. Why do I love Underwater again? How can I justify this? I’ve got no clue.
We don’t deserve Mika.
6 - I Need Your Love (Calvin Harris ft Ellie Goulding)
US: #56 / FR: #51
Tumblr media
By now you must all be extremely tired of reading me describing songs in visual ways but this song is the sound equivalent of some sort of light show mixed with Dance Dance Revolution patterns. It’s incredibly kinetic and full of joyful, glittering energy, and I love it so goddamn much.
As a 90s kid who loved eurodance, I’m incredibly grateful this kind of music still exists and is still charting.
5 - Treasure (Bruno Mars)
US: #30 / FR: #23
Tumblr media
Speaking of nostalgia. Well, not really, since I wasn’t born in the era this is trying to mimic, but still. I don’t have anything to say about this, apart maybe from the fact this is the song that finally made me like Bruno Mars.
4 - Hey Brother (Avicii)
US: Not on the list / FR: #18
Tumblr media
I already mentioned how much I loved Avicii’s music when I briefly talked about Levels, and Hey Brother is even better. As you might know I have a little brother and as it is often the case with siblings we fought a bit but we also shared a lot of things, and games, and weird private jokes, and yeah that song can occasionally make me cry a fair bit if I’m being honest.
Also, it’s kind of my main theme song for Charley and C’rizz, so, yeah, it’s just another layer of Feelings(tm).
3 - I Will Wait (Mumford & Sons)
US: #52 / FR: Not on the list
Tumblr media
As you might have noticed, there’s one genre that is conspicuously absent from my lists as far as the US hit songs are concerned, and that’s country. I’ve got nothing against country music, I just rarely find it visually interesting. Now I do like folk rock on the other hand, but its big era is long gone, and it’s quite rare to hear anything from it in the charts nowadays. I liked Ho Hey by the Lumineers, but I always thought it was a little bit too slow.
And then I found Babel by Mumford & Sons at the library, gave it a try, loved it, felt like discovering a modern band version of Bob Dylan with simpler lyrics, and this isn’t my favorite song on the album and it’s still at #3 on this list. Quality, man, just quality.
My favorite song from the album is Lover of the Light, by the way.
2 - Can’t Hold Us (Macklemore & Ryan Lewis)
US: #5 / FR: #8
Tumblr media
Sometimes you need angry fight songs, sometimes you need energetic fight songs, and sometimes you need happy fight songs. And when something combines the last two, it’s like you caught a star in a Mario game and you’re f█cking unstoppable.
If Macklemore doesn’t get more hit songs at some point in the near future I’m gonna punch a wall.
1 - Roadgame (Kavinsky)
US: Not on the list / FR: #44
Tumblr media
This song has no music video. It was still an enormous hit.
As you may recall, I already said once or twice that I liked to hang out at the disc store after class while I was in highschool and uni, and it still happened regularly after I started to work. Even nowadays, if I had a really, really bad day, there’s a good chance I’ll go there and spend at least an hour there just listening to stuff.
So here I was, one fine (actually bad) day, and this song was playing, and I was mesmerised, and for the first time ever, I felt the need to find a vendor and ask what was playing. I found one and the guy instantly beamed and went “oooooh I picked that album to play it in the store today! :D That’s Kavinsky, he’s great, here, have a listen” but it was already getting late so... I trusted him and basically bought the album blind.
Best decision ever. On top of being one of the best albums of the 2010s, OutRun is a concept album presented as if it was the soundtrack of a movie that never existed, about a young guy getting killed in a car crash in 1986 and somehow fusing with his car mentally and reappearing as some sort of technological zombie in 2006. And Roadgame is one of the best songs on the album if not the best. Well, my favorite song on it is actually Testarossa Autodrive, but you get my point.
I was like “there’s no way this is going to be big”, and I was dead wrong, thankfully. As a big fan of electronic music full of lights and flashes and colors but with dark overtones, I couldn’t be happier about this being one of the sounds of the year. Just fantastic stuff.
It’s 2020, man. Please drop that second album. We’re ready to have our minds blown all over again. Just do it.
Also, thank you random vendor from the disc store.
Next up: I have no idea why some people call 2014 a really bad year for hit songs tbh

Chapter 5 - Friday, October 2nd, 2009
The Brudowskis had put together a small memorial service for Peter Sanders about 2 weeks later, which had been difficult for everyone. It was held in a church, and about 30 people came. After counting the Brudowski and Ewing families, there were a handful of Peter’s co-workers who attended the service, as well as a few old friends. It was a closed casket funeral, with beautiful bouquets of flowers covering the church. Carolyn spoke briefly, with Sam at her side, and by the time she was done, there was not a dry eye to be seen. Vera and Sallie recited a poem, and Janet Brudowski came up and led everyone in a hymn. For the next couple days after the funeral, Carolyn and Sam were in a complete haze. Sallie and Vera instantly recognized the challenges they were going through and were happy to help. Sallie was coming over to the Brudowski household home every afternoon now. While her parents were not thrilled about her spending so much time away from home, they acknowledged that her friend was hurting, and Sallie was still getting all of her homework done so they couldn’t really protest much.
Now, a few weeks after the funeral, Carolyn and Sam were finally starting to feel a bit of normalcy slip into their lives. Brittany and Sam had become good friends; they would read together, and Brittany would even let Sam talk about the Cubs while Brittany pretended to understand baseball. Carolyn enjoyed spending so much time with her friends, especially since they were all diligent students. They could help each other when one of them got stuck on a certain homework problem. Carolyn’s birthday was coming up, and she actually felt a little excited. She was the baby of the trio, and was ready to join her other friends in being a fifteen-year-old. Janet had come up to her and asked what she wanted to do for her birthday. Carolyn meekly explained that a trampoline would be fun, maybe something in their backyard. Janet ran with it and was planning a party with a huge trampoline, lots of birthday cake, and even some karaoke. Janet asked Sallie and Vera if there was anyone else to bring to the party. There were a few other friends they had in mind, and Sallie asked if she could bring Lara, which was answered with an immediate yes.
The party was on a Friday afternoon, a few days after Carolyn’s actual birthday. The hoard of Brudowski teenagers and Carolyn all poured out of the older van and immediately heard ‘I Gotta Feeling’ by the Black Eyed Peas coming from the backyard. A huge smile broke out across Carolyn’s face, “Yes finally some pop music! No offense guys, but death metal is not really my favorite music genre.” Andrew and Vera chuckled slightly, and they all raced inside. Sallie, her parents, and Lara arrived at the house about an hour later. By about 5 p.m., the rest of Carolyn’s friends had arrived and the party was flowing smoothly. The trampoline Janet had rented was the biggest trampoline Carolyn had ever seen, it could hold 20 people, easily. The girls spent the majority of the evening bouncing on the trampoline, while Trixie and Brittany largely monopolized the karaoke machine. They even convinced Sam to sing ‘Baby Got Back’ by Sir Mix-A-Lot, and it was great to see him having so much fun and being so free.
By 8 p.m., the cake had been cut, and Carolyn’s huge adopted family had a great time shout-singing happy birthday. Jaret had sneakily switched the candles to trick candles, and everyone had a good laugh as Carolyn desperately tried to blow them out. Then Andrew licked his fingers and put out a candle, which almost gave Janet a heart attack. After seeing Andrew do it, all of the kids wanted to do it, but Brad put a stop to all that by quickly putting each of the trick candles out with his own fingers. The cake was rainbow on the inside, with a white frosting base and Carolyn’s name written out in beautiful script letters across the sheet cake. After cake, Carolyn, Sallie, Vera, and their other friends from school sang karaoke for the next hour. Vera was singing ‘Bad Romance’ by Lady Gaga, and her dance had Sallie rolling on the ground laughing. Carolyn looked lovingly at her friends, then walked back into the house to take a quick breather.
Carolyn walked into the sitting room, a room seldom used due to its lack of electronics. Honestly, it was Carolyn’s favorite room in the house. There was a beautiful painting that spanned the entire length of one of the walls, and the other wall had large windows looking out onto the front yard. The couches were beautiful as well; they looked like they were right out of the Victorian era. Carolyn sat on the couch that faced the wall full of windows and looked out into the dimming evening light.
“Hey. Are you okay?” An unexpectedly deep voice rang through the room, Carolyn turned around swiftly to see Adrian standing behind her.
“God you scared me!” Carolyn said, a little out of breath.
“Oh I’m sorry, I saw you come into the house and just wanted to make sure everything was okay.” Adrian explained hurriedly.
Carolyn smiled, “I’m fine, thanks for asking. I just came in for a bit of quiet. I’m still getting used to how constant the noise is in this house. My old apartment was much quieter since it was usually just me and Sam.” Carolyn explained, her voice dropping slightly with the painful memory of what felt like a past life. Adrian sat next to Carolyn and rested his hand on hers.
“I can imagine that would be a big difference. It is true that this house doesn’t really stop.” Adrian said sweetly, with his hand still on hers. Carolyn was looking down at their hands, Adrian’s large hand completely enveloped her small hands. Carolyn’s heart rate sped up and she could feel her armpits starting to sweat. Carolyn turned her head and looked at Adrian’s face. Adrian was looking steadily at her, and when their eyes met, Carolyn’s heart leapt out of her chest. Adrian smiled and slightly closed his fingers around Carolyn’s hands.
“Wh--, umm, yeah, uhh, I guess this house doesn’t stop.” Carolyn chuckled nervously, then finally was able to put a sentence together, “I’m getting used to it, though.”
Adrian nodded, still maintaining eye contact, “That’s great. I’ve been trying to make sure I don’t make too much noise at night to keep you up. I can tell you Andrew and Jaret have also been better about their nighttime noise as well.” This caused Carolyn to blush a deep purple, recalling the conversation she had with Vera and Sallie a few months earlier.
“I, well, I’ve, I, umm, haven’t heard anything,” Carolyn stammered. She knew her face was completely red and was trying to calm herself down at this novel feeling, but the persistence of Adrian’s strong hand around her hands was not helping.
“Great. Just pound on the door if anyone ever is too loud at night. John used to drive me crazy with him sneaking girls in through his window at all hours of the night. When he moved out it felt like a calm had settled over the house.” Adrian laughed to himself, and Carolyn was in awe of how coolly he talked about this with her. Carolyn blushed even harder thinking about how John had had sex in the bed she slept in every night, probably a lot of sex, by the way Adrian was talking.
Carolyn squirmed a little, “Well I’ve never heard you sneak in a girl, so you’re doing a good job at keeping quiet.” Carolyn couldn’t stop herself from making her comment. She held her breath waiting for Adrian’s response.
“Hah. Well you won’t ever hear that from me, I would never make a girl have to sneak through my window. Plus, I wouldn’t want to betray my parents’ distrust like that either.” Adrian explained, with a look of slight vulnerability that Carolyn had never seen.
“Oh. That’s nice of you.” Carolyn quietly replied. After another moment, Carolyn shifted, “I’m going to go see what everyone is up to.” This conversation had felt like it had covered an eternity, but in reality it was only a couple minutes. Carolyn got up from the couch and tried her hardest not to sprint out of the room. She could not believe what had just happened. Why was Adrian being so nice to her? He had basically held her hand, which was a step that Carolyn had never even come close to. Then he kept talking about basically sex, which was just blowing her mind. The cherry on top was that she glanced behind her and saw Adrian trotting upstairs with his hands in his pockets.
Carolyn went back into the backyard to find Sallie now singing ‘Fireflies’ by Owl City. She was just finishing the song, and Sallie and Vera both called to Carolyn to come sing a song. Thankfully it was dark outside and the only lights were a few string lights surrounding the perimeter of the yard, so her friends couldn’t see how red her face was, still. Carolyn chose ‘My Life Would Suck Without You’ by Kelly Clarkson, which she so lovingly dedicated to her two best friends. About 10 minutes later, Carolyn saw Adrian come back to the backyard and began chatting with Andrew and Jaret, who were having a heated discussion on the current basketball season. Carolyn’s heart began pounding once again thinking of what had taken up 10 minutes of Adrian’s time.
After a few more songs, the friends from high school said goodbye, and the trio went back onto the trampoline. At this point in time, no one else was on the trampoline, so they laid down and just chatted. A few minutes later, the girls heard a collective low roar, with a few high-pitched screams and the pounding of footsteps. The girls propped themselves up and looked out to find the four boys and two girls running towards them. They all invaded the trampoline and started jumping around the girls. Sallie let out a quick squeal while Vera tried grabbing her brothers’ feet and pulling them down. Carolyn let out a quiet yell and tried to stand back up, but she kept being bounced back down. Carolyn turned to Vera’s tactic by grabbing feet and hands and trying to pull people down. She successfully pulled Sam down and tickled him until he begged her to stop. Then she grabbed Trixie and also successfully pulled her down. Carolyn reached out and blindly grabbed a hand, and pulled, but instead felt a strong grip around her hand pulling her up. She got to her feet and then the strong grip let go and allowed her to fall. She let out another yelp and looked up to see Adrian grinning down at her. Carolyn spun around and grabbed Adrian’s ankle; she yanked and was bounced up as Adrian crashed onto the trampoline. Adrian was laughing the whole time, then he turned his attention to Jaret and pulled him down. Soon enough, all the kids were on their backs laughing incessantly.
Janet and Brad came out to the trampoline and told Sam and Brittany that they needed to head to bed. At that, Adrian and Andrew gave their mother a kiss and went over to a friend’s house. Jaret went back inside to play video games. Trixie wanted to hang around, and the girls listened while she complained about how much 7th grade sucks. Eventually Trixie got tired and reluctantly went to bed. The three girls were left alone on the trampoline. They chatted about student council and how much of a popularity contest it all was. They discussed their teachers, which ones were the best and which ones were completely intolerable. Sallie talked about band, explaining that she got third to last chair, but the other people behind her were older than she is, so she was pretty happy about that. The conversations faded, and soon they heard faint snoring coming from Vera.
“We should bring her to bed.” Carolyn said. She and Sallie then shook Vera awake and they all went up to Vera’s room. They turned on the TV and all laid in Vera’s bed, with Carolyn in the middle. Vera promptly fell back asleep. Just as Sallie was drifting to sleep, she heard Carolyn quietly say, “Psst.”
“What is it Cara?” Sallie whispered, using a shortened version of her name not heard often.
“Something happened.” Carolyn whispered, barely audible.
“What do you mean?” Sallie propped herself up slightly, talking at a slightly louder volume.
“Shh. I don’t want Vera to hear.” Carolyn’s eyes widened and Sallie sank back down into the bed.
“Okay you’re freaking me out, what?!” Sallie whispered and grabbed Carolyn’s arm.
“Okay, I went inside for a minute to get a quick breather during the party.” Carolyn started, pausing.
“Oh that’s where you went! We thought you were pooping.” Sallie laughed as quietly as she could.
Carolyn smiled, “No, but anyways. I was sitting on the couch in the sitting room looking outside, collecting my thoughts. Then Adrian came in and asked if I was okay. Which was nice.” Carolyn kept pausing between sentences, but Sallie was completely captured and wouldn’t dare to interrupt. “Then he sat down next to me. And. He put his hand on mine, which was nice. I assumed he was just doing that to calm me down.” Sallie shook her head wildly. “And I was talking about how loud this house is and how it’s hard to get used to. Then Adrian was like ‘oh sorry, I’ve tried to be quieter since you got here, I hope I haven’t kept you up’” Carolyn paused.
“Oh my god like what Vera was talking about at my house after the first day of school?” Sallie whispered incredulously.
“I don’t know, but that’s what I was thinking too! Then I was like ‘no it’s fine, I haven’t heard anything’ – which is true, I actually haven’t heard any of the noise Vera was talking about.” Carolyn added, because she knew that would be Sallie’s next question. “And he was like ‘well when John was here he’d always bring girls in through his window and kept everyone up’ – like with sex. Oh and his hand is still on my hands. Not like holding hands or anything, but his fingers were clasped a little around mine!” Carolyn was getting a little out of breath, feeling her heart pounding once again as she recounted the story. “And I said ‘oh well I haven’t heard you when you’ve brought girls in, so you must be pretty quiet.’”
“Wait, you said that?” Sallie asked, even more incredulous than before, tightening her grip on Carolyn’s arm.
“I know, I couldn’t believe I said that but it just spilled out of my mouth!”
“Okay now I’m dying to know what he said!” Sallie was still whispering, but her excitement was palpable.
“Okay, get this – he was like ‘oh no, I don’t bring girls here like that, I would never do that to a girl.’” Carolyn paused.
“Wait so is that meaning like he hasn’t had sex or just like he would treat them better?” Sallie quickly asked.
“I don’t know, I have no idea.” Long pause. “Then afterwards I realized that it felt like we had been there forever and I really didn’t want someone to find us like that, so I got up and left.” Sallie loosened her grip and inhaled, getting ready to say something. “But then, I turned around and he was going upstairs. Like maybe he didn’t want to come out at the same time? Or maybe he had to go to the bathroom? But there was a bathroom right next to the sitting room.”
“Wait so you don’t think?” Sallie couldn’t breathe.
“I don’t know, but I can tell you that he didn’t come back out to the backyard for another ten minutes.” Carolyn set down the heavy words that just sat in the air as Sallie reeled in. After a few moments, Sallie realized that Carolyn was done with her story.
“Okay what the hell was that? I am just flabbergasted. This is crazy. I don’t even understand! Like obviously all of Vera’s brothers are cute. But WOW. What does that even mean? Oh my gosh Vera cannot know about this. You cannot do anything with him! You know how crazy that would be? Vera would kill you! Plus, he’s a senior.” Sallie said all of this in basically one breath.
“Okay whoa slow down.” Carolyn tried to pull Sallie back in from where she was going, “Nothing is going to happen! It was just a weird moment and I knew you would understand the gravity of it. He was probably pooping anyways. It doesn’t matter. Let’s just never talk about this again.” Carolyn was thoroughly embarrassed thinking about Sallie’s comment of ‘doing anything with him’.
“Okay, okay, I’m sorry.” She could feel that Carolyn was about to shut down, “I’ll drop it, but if you ever need to talk to me about this, please do! And you have to tell me if anything else weird happens.”
“I will, but probably nothing will.” Carolyn confessed. Sallie quietly agreed, and the two girls quickly fell asleep.
