30 Day OC Challenge - Day 1
Starting off the challenge with Katalya Vel'Ranian nee Mornblade, one of my WoW characters (and, in fact, the guild leader of Steelbound).
Tumblr media
This is Kat (or Talya, as she prefers) in her Ret gear with her Argent Crusader tabard (after I transmogrified it, of course). She was created for two reasons:
I was getting really sick of the standard “Oh, my blood elf isn’t like other blood elves! They’re ~S P E C I A L~ because of XYZ” thing I was seeing in RP on my server. I was like, “There’s nothing wrong with being a straight-up standard belf, dammit!” And,
I really liked the idea of little belf chick with a gigantic fuck-off 2H sword.
Thus, Katalya Mornblade. (Blood elves tend to have “Random Apostrophe Fantasy Syllables” or else “Sun/Blood/Fire-related word + Sword/Blood/Combat-related word” surnames. Thus her married name of Vel’Ranian.)
((New Belf surname: Bloodblood. You’re the Moon Moon of belves. *ahem* ANYWAY))
Personality-wise, Kat is a flirt and a party girl. She likes drinking, dancing, loud parties, and (before she was married) casual (but safe!) sex. She likes lots of booze, lots of food, and lots of music. Being married and running a guild hasn’t settled her down all that much (though having a child has quieted the parties slightly). She likes jewelry and make up and pretty dresses almost as much as she likes UTTERLY OBLITERATING THE SCOURGE AND DESTROYING THE LICH KING WHOSE ARMIES KILLED HER FAMILY AND NEARLY WIPED OUT HER PEOPLE.
*ahem* There’s a reason Kat is a Retribution paladin. Like, that was an RP decision, not even a gameplay one. Her off-spec is Protection, because when she’s not making the Scourge pay for the lives they’ve destroyed, she’s protecting those who yet live - her two younger siblings, Arondiel and Deiana.
Kat came from a big family, initially, and she had 4 older siblings. She was a middle child, towards the young end, not terribly responsible, usually a troublemaker. And then the Scourge stomped through Quel’Thalas and now it’s just her, Aron, and Dei. Suddenly she’s the oldest sibling. There are no parents. And all the responsibility is on her shoulders.
She found a cousin who survived and convinced her to take in Aron and Dei, and then Kat marched straight back to Silvermoon and signed up with the Blood Knights. She trained hard, sent coin back to her cousin to help cover her siblings’ upkeep, and partied at least as hard as she worked whenever she got the chance. A way to blow off steam, to remind herself that she was still alive, to celebrate the fact that the Scourge hadn’t gotten to her.
Kat’s worked her way up the ranks. She’s not well-known, but those who do know her generally think well of her, at least on a professional basis. Blood Knights are now well and truly Paladins of the Light, but Kat has never been especially religious. It’s a means to an end for her. Paladins are best suited for destroying the undead, so that’s why she went to them.
Kat married Lord Dawnvale a few years back, because he was a noble who could provide for Aron and Dei. It was a marriage of convenience, and not a happy one. He died after a year or so - surprised a burglar breaking into his manor - and, after another year of appropriate widow-ly mourning, Kat married her long-time boyfriend, Killian Vel’Ranian, himself the bastard son of another noble house. (Kat had regretfully left Killian to marry Dawnvale.)
There are whispers and rumors that Kat had her husband killed so as to be with Killian, but nothing can be proven, and she was never even alone with Killian during that year of mourning. She behaved as Silvermoon high society would expect a widow to. Marrying Killian put an end to THAT, though.
Kat has turned her former husband’s house (naturally she inherited everything when he died) into her guild hall. Steelbound’s reputation is akin to a frat house, and they take in so many of those...OTHER races. Technically allies through the Horde, but... ugh. But Steelbound also has a reputation of honorable conduct, of helping those in need, and of being the sort of people you don’t piss off because if you anger one of them, you’ve just made enemies with the whole guild. Tight-knit, small, but devoted.
The manor echoes with loud voices, animal roars, and occasional explosions at all hours. Guild parties are legendary affairs; parties for the nobility are rare and poorly-attended. Aron and Dei live with their sister now, and a couple years back, a daughter was born to Kat and Killian: Vestia (named after Kat’s mom).
There are non-belf versions of Kat; for example, this is Katherine Hart in The Boom RP-verse I have with @tybunnythehellmoose:
Tumblr media
But all versions of Kat love good parties, hot guys, and her family. All of them are steadfast friends and doggedly vengeful enemies.
