Dungeon Meshi Volume 6 Part 2

Continuing chapter 38! As always, spoilers ahoy!

I like how he compliments the picture of Falin. He hasn't even seen the Cerberus yet.

So, before I read Dungeon Meshi, I remember seeing lots of stuff on twitter and tumblr about it, but none of it really stuck in my memory. One thing did. The Chimera. This was the one big thing I was spoiled on. A cool-ass chimera that the elf was gay for. It may have been what finally got me to check it out. Good food? Cool monsters? Lesbians? Sounds good to me. And it was good!

But it took me an embarrassingly long time to realize who the chimera was. I didn't remember the chimera's name, so Falin didn't ring any bells. I should have caught on when Falin was resurrected with dragon flesh, but no. It literally took Thistle saying "Hey Dragon" for me to realize what the chimera was.

The only other spoiler of note was Izutsumi, who, as I mentioned, appeared in chapter 0. She totally blindsided me. I didn't suspect Asebi for a second. Kabru I am not.

Such a good group shot with lots of little characterization. Chilchuck and Mickbell arguing, Kuro fixing his armor, Holm mourning his Undine, Marcille isolated from the rest, Tade taking a nap. Good stuff.

Ah, trauma. Wait a sec. There. In the lower right corner. Did Kabru glimpse the demon itself?

Eh, close enough.

Honestly, I think this might be the one big plothole I've noticed. When Falin teleported them to the surface, they only had what they were holding. Like, they kept the essentials like Marcille's staff and book, and Chilchuck's picking tools, but their backpacks were left behind, right? Yet, once they are in front of the dungeon again, they have packs? Where did they get those? Weren't they broke?

This bit of foreshadowing was a lot more effective in the anime. How am I supposed to remember what everyone's gloves looked like?

Also, I just noticed that Marcille's hood goes on before we see her face in this chapter. So if you're just going off this chapter, you can't get a good read on her current hairstyle. Clever.

Let's go over the fakes character by character. The Laios fakes are kinda obvious, because even though Laios is good friends with all three of his companions, they have trouble understanding him. Thankfully, Laios has the thickest skin, so it doesn't really bother him too much. I also find it funny that Marcille's turns him into a lumbering hulk who epitomizes the differences from Falin, yet Senshi's is just butch Falin. Pretty sure I remember Senshi mentioning in his journal that Falin and Laios are basically the same person.

The Marcilles are a bit better. Senshi's is obviously a elven stereotype, but the other three are all quite close. Curiously, unlike most of the clones, Laio's Marcille emphasizes her good traits, her determination and loyalty to Falin, while most of the other clones emphasize negative or false traits.

Honestly, if not for the scarf, it probably would have been difficult to tell Laio's version from the real one. He's the only one who has a proper grasp on his maturity.

Senshi is easily the hardest to pick out. Senshi has yet to share his deeper secrets, and he is a pretty straightforward guy.

I like how the Chilchuck Marcille is the one to propose the method that outs herself.

Hmm... looking it over, it doesn't look to be consistent, but I almost thought for a sec that the fake Marcille has pointier ears. I dunno. Maybe it's just the calmer demeanor, but Marcille A does seem more elf-like than Marcille B. Then again, I'm not sure if Laios ever met an elf before Marcille, so he wouldn't have a baseline.

See, what you want to do here is have all the Senshis take their helmets off. Laio's would be the only one with eyebrows.

And hey! When he later runs into a monster disguised as Marcille, he sees through it almost immediately!

Marcille has one line she won't cross. With a long list of stipulations that will make her cross. Like starvation. Or ignorance. Or eating her girlfriend.

The proper term is Black Mage, and that just means I'm good at fireball.

The real moral of the story. Marcille is infallible, so you should listen to her.

I think the funniest (and saddest) part of Izutsumi's story is that she has it all wrong. She isn't a person possessed by a cat, she's a cat possessed by a person. She's been conditioned all her life to think the cat part of her is unnatural, when in reality it's her true self. Try to separate the halves, and you'd end up with a braindead tall-man and a very disappointed kitty.

It took two read-throughs, the anime, and two more read-throughs, but I finally can remember how to pronounce/spell your name.

It's kinda sad that as far as I can remember, this one line is the only bit of characterization we get for the Touden mom.

I remember finding this panel odd on my second read. The chimera didn't look right. Turns out this nerd continuously updated it throughout the adventure. Anyway, want to see another of my creatures?

Taiga: shirou is her precious little sister. approximately 130% more jokes about shirou being a good housewife someday except they're not really jokes anymore are they? also thinks it's cute that shirou liked magical girls SO much she decided to become a girl. i know she's not actually that dumb but she does get caught up in her own brand of insanity that i think its entirely possible that she would very seriously tell shirou to be careful around boys, because pregnancy is no joke, shirou. it does not occur to either of them that shirou cannot actually become pregnant.

Sakura: im gonna be honest i dont entirely have a handle on sakura's inner monologue but i think this just makes her feelings for shirou way more complex but in New and Intersting ways but also i dont think she would realize for a long time that "being a lesbian" is like. possible.

Tohsaka: 1000% thought shirou was cis up until she comes over to stay at the emiya household at which point her entire brain screeches to a halt because "someone this pretty?? used to be a guy¹?? huh??" On non-UBW routes she eventually morphs into Halimede

Saber: gonna be honest i dont think saber cares about gender at all, and their relationship would be identical to canon

Ilya: Albrecht told her all about the "son" kiritsugu adopted but i think learning that shirou became kiritsugu's daughter instead (ignoring that transitioning only happened after kiritsugu died) would drive her insane. But also initially she wouldn't even realize who shirou was because she wasn't looking for a girl, so ilya'a first impression of shirou was "random nice girl". makes more housewife jokes than taiga does.

Shinji: the vibes are fucking atrocious

Ayako: is the closest thing FSN has to a butch lesbian. do the math. she wants shirou to come back to archery club so bad for reasons that definitely dont have anything to do with shirou's abs.

Archer: if archer transitioned too, their relationship is identical to canon. if archer didn't, then they're SO mad. so fucking mad.

With me, genderswapping is when you just make a character a different label that would fit the norm of that label, which is female, though, when you think about it if you were genderswapped, you'd still have the same mindset as the other version, you'd Identify more with that version and then therefore get dysphoria and act more masculine, maybe become male. I used to hate genderswaps because of that, but I was just thinking too much into it, so I'll have my fun. Anyway, tangent there, but what I was getting to is that I will make the hair longer for women genderswaps just to give the effect, no matter if it was already considered long. So, which is why She has the extremely long hair in Thunderbolts and Winter Soldier, because to men his hair was long, so to women her hair must also be long.

And I also just NEEDED to see her in a grown out pixie cut so tfaws was a great excuse to do that.

Patriarchy and the Nine Houses

I've been mulling this one over in my brain on long drives recently, and as I'm currently at home resting up after an insanely busy few days and also some sort of illness flareup, I want to put some of what I've come up with into writing. These are coming from the perspective of a somewhat masculine-presenting queer trans woman with some degree of familiarity with anarcha-feminism, a lot more familiarity with anarchism in general, but not really much academic feminist background. I'm also white, which may well impact what I'm taking away from this here.

Something else that might influence what I've written here are the frankly insane doses of decongestants I'm currently on, but here goes.

So firstly, I don't think 'Patriarchy' as common feminist discourse uses the term exists within the Houses.

In terms of "Evidence Against", for one, there is seemingly no gendered violence in the Nine Houses - I've seen more than one post about how at no point does Gideon Nav feel like she's in any sort of danger of sexual assault or anything like that from the men she interacts with - she's quite happy to walk into Silas and Colum's room, and at no point does the narrative mention her being concerned about sexual violence while she, a teenage butch lesbian, is trapped in a room with an older man whose intentions towards her are unknown. She gets worried, sure, but mostly about swords or necromancy, not sexual assault. Our Griddle may be a bit sheltered, sure, but she's read a lot of adult-oriented comics, which in my experience tend to be fairly lurid about any and every fucked up thing that happens in the society that produced them, and none of those, nor anything she's been told by Aiglamene or witnessed on the Ninth, seem to have instilled any fear of patriarchal sexual violence in her.

The houses also don't seem to have a concept of homophobia or particularly rigid gender roles - at absolutely no point does anyone take issue with Gideon's sexuality and gender presentation, despite various other characters being absolute shits to her in various other ways throughout the book - Crux, Naberius, Silas, the Reverend Parents - at no point is it even hinted at that any of them were homophobic or shitty about gender-non-conformity. I don't really think you can get rid of any of those things entirely without also at least taking a big chunk out of patriarchy, if not eliminating it - they're all too tightly linked together.

I honestly don't think you can describe, for instance, Palamedes or Silas or Naberius as benefitting from "male privilege" in the context of the books without getting into some weird gender-essentialist bollocks about how being male Just Does That For You, at which point you may well be sliding into terf shit and I don't really think we have much of a common ground to discuss this from. The fandom's treatment of gender (and race, while we're at it) is another matter, but in the context of the books, I genuinely don't see "male privilege" or "patriarchy" existing within the wider society of the Nine Houses. You can look at the necro/cav dynamic as a sort of metaphor for gender, and I do consider them through that lense in some cases, but it's not a 1:1 map for gender and I don't think it's trying to be.

You could argue there's some weird patriarchal ideas of manhood in Mortus' treatment of Ortus - the guy very clearly abused his son to try to "toughen him up" and make him into a warrior when Ortus wanted nothing more than to write poetry, but while that's arguably written with a patriarchal bent to it from a doylist perspective, at no point does anyone actually tell Ortus he's less of a man in the text. What they do tell him is that he's less of a cavalier, which is why I actually view that dynamic as much more of an exploration of cavalier-hood as a metaphor for gender - 'toxic cavalierhood' rather than toxic masculinity, albeit via a dynamic that's unforunately very familiar to a lot of us.

The big flaw in my argument is that, unfortunately, in the literal sense of the word, the Nine Houses very much are a capital-P Patriarchy. They're run by an immortal God-Emperor dude with some fairly intense catholic shit going on! John actually was raised in a patriarchal society, and while his experiences as a he remembers it, and while he seems to have done an OK job of not passing homophobia, misogyny or strict gender roles onto the society he built after literally fucking nuking the one he grew up in, I don't know if someone in his position of power is really in a position to unlearn anything more at this point. To a lesser extent we see it with Augustine as well - the Saint of Patience definitely reads as a misogynist at times during the text (telling Mercymorn "you have made yourself unlovable" and his whole thing about Ianthe chosing to be broken spring to mind), and while he may not remember the pre-resurrection world, it still shaped him (and his brother, who is as much a part of the man we meet in HtN as the original Augustine who was resurrected).

Also none of this is to say the society of the Nine Houses is perfect - far from it! There's all sorts of fucked up abuse dynamics present, and the entire thing has been a fucked-up expansionist empire since it found someone to do expansionist imperialism on about five millennia before the story takes place, before which it was still a fucked-up death cult living on the reanimated wreckage of a dead solar system. If anything, the lack of misogyny, homophobia, rigid gender roles and the like are a parable - it doesn't matter how inclusive and egalitarian the society of the imperial core is when it perpetuates brutal violence on the imperial periphery.

You see, Joker has lots of queer friends. Working at a gay bar does that to a guy. Unfortunately he and his boyfriend Goro don't have room in their apartment with his little sibling staying with them, so he resorts to plan B. Asking Haru and Makoto to help a woman out

So basically. Hifumi learns how to live as herself freely for the first time, with the help of some new queer friends while living in Makoto and Haru's guest room and having weekly tea with Akira

Here's where everyone's at!

Joker (Akira)- he's a drag queen of course. Moonlights as Aki-chan at Crossroads, is dating Goro, shares a small apartment with him and Futaba. Friend to many a queer folk, he jokes that he's the slutty glue that keeps their ragtag group together

Ryuji- studying to be a gym teacher, a proper one. Bisexual, cis. Openly bi too, he has his flag pinned to everything he owns. He even dyed his hair in the flag colours once when he had too much to drink. Shares Ann's place with her, Shiho, and Yusuke, he's blossoming out now that he's out of highschool

Ann- beginner actor, bisexual and cis, been dating Shiho since their highschool days. When Ryuji woke up with his hair dyed, she dyed her pigtails out of solidarity. She really hopes Hifumi branches out into trying different fashion and makeup options, she's looking forward to a good girl's night with someone other than Haru

Yusuke- gay asexual. Transmasc, he/they. A starving artist rescued by two overly friendly bisexuals (and Shiho), his room in their place is a den of colour and expression and their soul splattered on the walls. He ends up closest with Hifumi out of the roommate quad

Futaba- they like girls but doesn't wanna pin down their sexuality just yet. Agender, fine with the label non-binary too, any pronouns. Works as a freelance cyber security assistant out of Akira and Goro's apartment, doesn't like being around people too much. They like Hifumi. She's quiet, smart. She's also unafraid to join Futaba in bullying Goro

Makoto- lesbian transfem. To put her identity into the classic lesbian terms, she's between futch and butch, and is working to be a youth councilor. She transitioned rather young and has reached a solid point in her life, and is very excited to get to guide Hifumi on her journey of defining Womanhood for herself. She and Haru are married in every sense but the legal one

Haru- cis lesbian. Though, honestly, shes mainly only ever had eyes for Makoto. High femme. She runs a little cozy bakery slash coffee shop under their apartment, the whole place screams cottage core. She's excited to have another person to dote on around the house. Secret from the others, but her and Makoto are beginning talks of whether they'd want to have a kid

And then to further complicate the matter there’s amab non-binary people, who people just LOVE to treat as “basically men” or “tainted” or some kind of other nasty terf crap. The point that I’m trying to make is that people seem to have a FUNDAMENTAL misunderstanding of what non-binary means, it’s quite literally NOT binary and while SOME peoples identities are going to clearly and neatly fit in boxes, many will not. No one is telling you that you HAVE to be attracted to these people or that you yourself ever will be but sometimes people that identify as lesbians are going to be because human beings and real life are messy and every second you waste arguing online with someone about their personal identity (who you are NEVER going to be able to convince to change by the way in case you haven’t figured out how that works yet) is a second that you could be using to do literally *anything* actually productive for your community.

A NOTP I have with said character: um... cassie / men? ever? like koncassie is an important part of both of their development but not a good actual romance. does that count?

A random headcanon: when she's had her butch revelations and cut her hair and started really leaning into self-acceptance, she phones tim up like. hey. i want to get a motorbike. what specs and stuff should i look for? and he gets so excited she ends up letting him build one for her (on the condition that he lets her help and tells her what each part they're installing does, etc). friendship :)

General Opinion over said character: i love my girl :) i wish dc did more with her and also let her stay more gnc and individual than just making her Generic Blonde Barbie #4. also wish they let her have, like, anger and grief issues without sacrifcing the way she Does Love Her Friends Deeply and all. cradles her gently in my hands babygirl i love u

General Opinion over said character: I LOVE HER. her narrative in yj98 is sooo good i think more teen heroes should get to retire and still be respected and loved by their friends in the community. the trauma and nuance of her entire story is just. MAN!
