Frequently Linux will just take the proper piss but sometimes the problem is actually on you. The fun part is figuring out which one applies this time something has broken
#taking the piss example: last update broke something which means I have to manually switch audio outputs when i connect my laptop to#something else via HDMI. thought some driver had broken or something nope! it;s just taking the mick#me problem example: trying to put EDAs on my old ereader but it wasn't mounting#“ah this happened with my mp3 player i think I know how to mount it” nope! the cable was dodgy and it works fine with a good one#sometimes i do feel like the jurgen leitner monologue#(poking my laptop with a stick) are you dead? are you a bastard?

is $140 a worthwhile pricetag for the akudrive stage play 😍
#akudama drive#rave ramblees#see like. i'm kinda scared if i wait too long on this eventually it won't be available to buy EVER again#it's actually not even that expensive#the blu-ray player required to play and more importantly: rip it- costs about 198477892374678 euros#but it would be such a service to the 5 people in the fandom#i could probably buy the stage play disc first and confirm i can actually get it#and THEN wait for my next salary and get the player#they actually seem to have cheaper players on amazon but i can't order off amazon T_T#i don't want to spend $100 on a stupid fucking disc player i'll never need to use#OH ACTUALLY i see a blu-ray player secondhand for closer to $30#would it work??? why did you upload the blurriest photo in the world is that even an hdmi cable??? it has to be-#okay correction is $70 worth it + the risk of the player not working#honestly i mean i spent over a hundred on the cutthroat cosplay that will rot in my closet until i DIE because i'll never get rid of it#guys who wants to fundraise my stupid ideas for a fandom nobody's in

call me old fashioned, but since getting a new phone (they took the headphone jack away from me!!!) and a fucking wired headphone adapter (bc i refuse to pay for bluetooth earbuds that i will 100% misplace within the Week), everytime i momentarily misplace the stupid fucking adapter "dongle" that lets me listen to my tunes, my vision goes red and there's nothing but angry static in my head
#if 'advancing' technology keeps taking things from me i'm gonna fly to silicon valley and blow something up#i fucking hate having adapters!!! first they took my cd/dvd player. then they took hdmi port away from me. now THIS#i have never really understood my mother and her long refusal to budge from using her small red flip phone until right now#i need shit to Pause#if you want me to buy bluetooth earbuds youre gonna have to kill me#rambles

NO SERIOUSLY. I MISS THESE. WHAT THE FUCK. WHERE IS MY SECOND DISK OF SPECIAL FEATURES. MY DIRECTORS COMMENTARY. MY THEATRICAL TRAILERS?
if it weren't for special features on DVDs i *genuinely* would not be on the path I am now. Some Studio Ghibli disks have a special feature called "storyboard mode" where the original animatic of the animation is played instead of the finished movie. That's what inspired me to want to be an animator! That's what lit that fire! Kids today are LOSING that! Give us the DVDs back! Give us back Xtra-Vision and Blockbuster and video rental stores!
And you can't even rely on a streaming service for movies because they can be removed at any time. I have my own collection of DVDs because of this fact. I have films you can't get on streaming over here because of whatever the fuck reasons. I have six disks of tobey's spider-man films; 3 film features, 3 special features. I have A Silent Voice. School of Rock. I have Into The Spider-Verse with a director's commentary. I have the Care Bears movie from 1985! KEEP YOUR MEDIA PHYSICAL. That way it can't be taken away for bullshit reasons.
the death of dvds is so fucked. what about bonus features
#i know dvds are still being made and all but its mostly blu-rays and i dont have a blu-ray player#Look. DVDs are being erased. TVs dont have a disc slot. They have fewer hdmi and av points#My new laptop for school doesn't have a disc slot!#If you want to watch a dvd now there are extra steps this is what im saying#you need to buy a cable and buy a dvd player and THEN watch it#before you could stick a disc in damn near anything#and dvds are so much less...personable#they used to be bonus features- games#trailers and blooper reels and interviews and shorts and everything#directors commentaries and deleted scenes too#it used to have its own seperate disc! because it was so much it wouldnt fit alongside the movie on the disc!#now were lucky to get what#maybe the theatrical trailer#or an interview with some actors#the directors commentary is a lot harder to find than it was#and deleted scenes? forget it#i dont think ill ever see a disc with a storyboard feature again either. this is what we mean#theyre still being made sure. but not as mainstream#which makes it less convenient for a lot of people. plus the PRICES. my god#a dvd new is like MINIMUM £10. places like CEX keep a lot of discs behind counter#so you cant check for damage like scratches before buying it#and the rental placed are gone.#we used to bring dvds into school and vote on what one to watch. i dont think that happens anymore#the rise of streaming services has mostly erased the need for physical media#even thiugh the streaming services have far less content than video rentals stores did#and the content gets switched between serviceds regularly#and you need good wifi for it even.#there's no streaming service I can use to watch the step up movies#or to watch like... danny phantom#so dvds and ...*alternative*. streaming sites are where it is for me

would love to stay in bed and recuperate further but duty calls... (thankfully normal for once inheritance proceedings for my late maternal grandma's remaining funds at the bank, awkward family coffee date, weekly grocery shopping)
After everything is said and done I'm 100% gonna slip back into bed and not leave until probably Saturday morning...

one thing that makes me lose my mind is when im asked to help with something (aka do it for the other person because ‘i don’t know how!’) and i get there and it’s obvious they never even tried to do it in the first place
#it’s a waste of my time because 9/10 times they can do it just fine#learned helplessness pisses me off so badly#like my mom asked for help setting up her dvd player (it was literally plugging the hdmi into the tv and the power cord into the wall)#and i told her I’d help if she genuinely tried and then couldn’t do it#and she swore she tried for ages to get it to work and just couldn’t#and when i got there the dvd player was still sealed in the fucking box#anyway i need to help someone fill out an online form tonight#one that they can clearly do on their own#because clearly my time is worthless#sulley speaks

Why did we have to get rid of disc players and hdmi cords? Why is everything usb
#this is cause I’m having to get an hdmi to usb cord so I can connect my laptop to my tv#and also cause I’m gonna have to get a disc player that also can connect to both the laptop and the tv

Really though why is it that so many old people are helplessly clueless when it comes to basic everyday technology like
#obviously it's a case by case basis but i feel like if youre a grown adult.... you should keep up with technology and learn how it works#ive shown my grandma many many many times how to use her dvd player and it seems like she doesnt bother making an effort to actually like...#see and learn what im doing so that she could do it herself next time#because she uses the 'oh im so bad with technology' excuse well why do you think that is?#you refuse to try and learn how any of it works#you should know and understand what the hdmi port on your tv is if you have one and need to use it

i'm trying to make an old DVD work on my PC using VLC media player and OMG. the technology nostalgia is hitting hard. and it's *weird.* i grew up installing everything from CDs (floppy disks were phasing out when i was learning to computer) and obviously there was no concept of an alternative at the time. the "cloud" wasn't a thing. and here i am fumbling my way back out of that cloud, leaning away from my PC tower as it loudly whirs at me... and this all transpires because i got a DVD player for free from a thrift store liquidation sale a few months back and. uhhh. forgot to look for a remote
#tried using phone as remote#phone doesn't have the required hardware bc it's too new (although some brands apparently still have IR blasters in their current models)#(just not mine)#dvd player is from somewhere in the 2015-2017 range and has both an analogue jack and an hdmi port#which is why i could use it at all#i don't have a tv but i have an hdmi monitor#so i was about to put the dvd away after this experimentation and went wait#pc has a dvd reader#i haven't actually played this dvd in years let's actually give it a go#the resolution is terrible#however!#i got to hear the thx sound

craziest thing about that is the tv is like. fairly old. my dad perseverated over it for YEARS and its like hilarious thick front to back for a flatscreen today. but on god i do not trust (with limited real tech knowledge) that one of those skinny little tvs with the sticky outy legs would have an hdmi port.

some of you have asked me about my crt setup!!
some basic materials you'll need.
CRT TV (duh)
computer or laptop (duh)
HDMI2AV (NOT AV2HDMI)
RCA cords (the red, white and yellow ones)
HDMI to USB converter if your laptop doesn't have HDMI like mine does.
here is the setup, this is a multi monitor setup but you can just do this with one CRT.
step one: plug in your crt. cord in the back. that will power your crt!
step two: plug in the RCA cables like this.
step three: plug your RCA cords into the HDMI2AV adapter like so. you'll plug in an HDMI cord on the other side. MAKE SURE IT'S SET TO THE CORRECT SETTING. THERE'S NTSC AND PAL
if you don't know what yours is, check this map that explains where each one was sold.
PAL is just a different color encoding system, a bunch of technical stuff you can learn on your own.
step four: plug your HDMI into the USB adapter if you need it. YOU MIGHT NOT. DEPENDS ON YOUR DEVICE.
i use a windows surface pro and it requires i use this adapter. sucks ass but whatever.
OPTIONAL: if you have ONLY ONE usb port in your computer, consider getting a USB splitter so you can plug multiple things in. i have one.
and voila. a set-up!
you can treat these like different displays.
mines connected by the 3 cords in the front, but if you have more money and can get another adapter and etc etc, you can make these all different.
a few FAQ since i assume quite a few of you have never used crts or vhs players:
whats the ringing sound?: its a ringing sound caused by the transformer in the back, its the 15kHz tone. as you get older, you stop hearing it because you lose high frequency hearing. i cant hear it in one ear because of a radio accident and i bursted my eardrum.
can i stop the ringing?: buy a crt pc. theyre smaller and dont ring as much/at all depending on which one you have.
how do i use my vhs player: you plug the cords into the back of the vhs player and then into the crt.
where do i buy a crt: theyre not in production anymore so you will have to buy it secondhand on markets.
where did you get all your cords: most stores with an electronics section will have it but consider secondhand computer parts store.
what do you do with it: literally watch YouTube, vhs tapes, make vhs tapes (whole different thing) or play video games.
can it run bad apple?: yes
can it run doom?: yes
anyways yeah. end tutorial. 🥳
