When I heard the news of what happened yesterday, I started crying. I haven’t been this affected by the news of a popular figure passing since Bowie and Robin Williams. I thought of you immediately and the struggles you were faced with up until the time of his death. My thoughts go out to you and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for being a truth speaker in a situation that many people seemed to turn a blind eye towards. ❤️
Oh, Anon(s). I’ve been crying on and off since yesterday and was hoping to stop, but you’re going to make me start again, damn it. I can’t thank you enough for these wonderful messages, and how it lifts my heart to receive such support after months and months of repeatedly being harassed, smeared, and dismissed. When NP co-founder Moondreams and I first started Naked Persimmon, it was to give fans a place to discuss the Monkees honestly, in a way they couldn’t in other places (which initially referred to seeing the Monkees as the human beings they were, who had had sex and taken drugs and were actual people, rather than the “innocent” boys they played on the TV show).
Moondreams has long since distanced herself from the fandom due to the harassment that both of us were receiving ten years ago, and so the reins of running NP’s social media have belonged me. But I could never have imagined that NP would serve that same function all these years later, but for an entirely different reason. I don’t know if I see myself/NP as having kept the Monkees magic alive, though. For me, that magic has been almost gone, especially with everything that’s happened over the past year (and for those who would like to catch up, the #sad state of affairs tag is a good place to start).
I feel like I’ve been trying to sound the alarm about Melodie for the last six years, ever since she came onto Tumblr and hollowed out the fandom. I knew who and what she was then and was convinced she’d never get close to Nez...and I was wrong. And it took a frighteningly small amount of time for her to gain a frighteningly large amount of control, wreaking havoc on everything in her path. The joy and passion that I had for the Monkees withered away because she sucked the life out of it.
But still...even through all of it...I didn’t give up. I couldn’t. I couldn’t give up on Nez, because he’d never given up on me. The only thing I’ve ever cared about is the truth, and Nez cared about the truth. (”Truth” with a capital T, too.) So that’s why I’ve continued to speak it, and will continue to speak it as more information emerges in the weeks and months ahead. I’m not going to let what happened to Nez be swept under the rug (and believe me when I tell you damage control efforts from certain people in the Monkees world are already underway, and it’s infuriating).
So thank you, Anon(s). I am sorry that we are all hurting so much, but I’m glad that we at least have each other, and our memories of Nez and the Monkees. That magic matters now more than ever, because it’s a light in a dark place.
Just like Michael Nesmith was.

6th Comedy Monologue
“So folks, that whole Brexit rubbish is finally over isn’t it?”
“I know, some of us could see it coming and Teresa May looks like the spitting image
of the stepmother from Cinderella
how come nobody has noticed that yet?
we all have politicians we don’t like don’t we?
at times like this, I have to remind myself Teresa May is a very well liked woman
but then I remember back in the day Margaret Thatcher was also a very well liked woman
don’t you think she and Teresa may are quite similar?
well this is how she’d treat a political problem
*attempts impersonation*
“what’s that? ok men I did you to do this and then this and then this and this”
whereas Teresa may would handle the situation like…
*attempts impersonation*
what’s this? oh leave it for a few months
but the main thing is they both hate poor people so who cares what they think
I actually sort of understand why people like Jeremy Corbyn but I had written that previous gag back in late June of last year, speaking of outdated gags
Pirates were the communists and socialists of the 17th century
they wanted money, disagreed with colonialism and didn’t care what the government thought of them
like with communists they were accepting and inclusive but they wanted gold
the pirates accepted many on their ship they allowed homosexuality, they allowed women in strong roles there were great times had on the high seas
even with the loot, they got they’d share it evenly what other power was involved with being inclusive with most things except money Oh Yeah! the communists
Yes, Yes we’ll handle it we’ll accept you but give us all your money
communism is a good concept but in the end, people get greedy for the money
like with pirates
we’ll accept you matey but give us some gold
however they didn’t agree about the government, they had their own independent pirate crews and disagreed with colonialism and capitalism
kind of like some of us, I think
we criticize politics, we like to party and we accept most people except colonialists …and capitalists...
Oh well, at least there’s been good music with Marina and the diamonds, Ariana Grande and the 1975
We, humans, love music
which makes me think about bands related to Homosapians
in the 60s we had the Monkees good band good name
and now we have Arctic Monkeys, Gorillaz, Rang a Tang and Apes
what about the lesser known homosapian types
Chimpanzees and Baboons
if music existed in Planet of the Apes
the Kate Bush hit Babooshka would be about a
monkey looking for love after getting his heart broken seeing his wife cheat on him with an older mandrill
only to fall in love again with who he’d call his baboonska
Animals are interesting creatures whether they are made of glass, made of 1960s haircuts or made of the first songs of a math rock band
Another good thing about music and animals is that Roger Taylor is going to help us save the bees
Thinking bee! Thinking queen! thinking bee! Thinking queen!
Speaking of which there’s been a whole glam rock/synthpop revival going on
And I love that
although as a kid I watched media from all sorts of different decades
While they watched Jersey Shore and Love Island I was watching Disney and CBBC sitcoms mixed with Japanese cartoons and shows from years before like Jem and the holograms, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the original my little pony series.
I would also watch funnybones, the original noody series from a VHS I “borrowed” from my neighbours, as well as the Muppet show and some classic cinema.
I think it’s amazing that this revival is happening it’s like the 60s,70s,80s,90s and early 2000s are all going on at the same time.
Revolutionary anarchic protests, Androgynous rockers, Neon colours, post-punk indie shows, peculiar fashion trends and reality shows as well as the cybernetic future beyond
But I’m also cold and angry about how this is happening because on the other hand, there are things carried over from previous decades that shouldn’t still be around...fascists in positions of power, nonces in the entertainment industry, Threat of a nuclear war, low economy, Jamie Oliver, Piers Morgan, Death, Pollution,Misogyny,Misandry,Sexism,Racism and White Supremacy
I could list more, but I can’t think at the moment I’m focusing on my work while morons on Twitter and Tumblr are yabbering on about vegan sausage rolls.
I’ve never tried Greggs before but I’m sure the vegans and vegetarians are happy that a mainstream chain like Greggs has made a product catered specifically for them, whereas before if you asked for a “vegan option” at a restaurant the waiter would scratch their neck.
However not all restaurants are like this, having to work overtime dealing with angry parents, screaming children and the odd nazi at Mcdonalds is not an easy task, yet so many waiters and workers across the world are able to somehow keep those businesses afloat, you guys, girls and comrades don’t get enough credit, you should be paid more,no wonder so many mainstream restaurants are having strikes or running out of food and people are either going to more independently funded places or ordering online to get their daily dose of fast fried convenience.
and while I would be interested in trying a vegetarian diet,It would be hard for me to give up eating chicken that quickly but I don’t really eat meat that often, and before you say anything as long as cannibals don’t use their choice of food in a dangerous way they’re ok with me, it’s no different to when our prehistoric ancestors had to hunt to find food in order to survive, some people still have to do that,it’s sad...it really is,while Christianity isn’t something I believe in anymore, it did say in the bible that Jesus shared his bread and food with his people, and I think some of us should start doing that, and if you already do whether it’s a snack you have or leaving out leftover food from your side takeaway business, that’s brilliant your making more people happy and your allowing more people to enjoy food and to have access to that basic human necessity that we all should be able to have to access to.
Sharing is another primary school lesson it feels like half of humanity has forgotten about outside of basic decency and kindness, but I’m probably not the one to talk about that since I was called “Rude” for most of my life.
there’s a big difference between telling someone they’re a plonker and making someone more aware of how they can improve themselves as a person.
Most of us all have flaws, most of us have had toxic moments,
we’ve all at times had moments where we’ve said something wrong that we didn’t mean,
or times where our cowardliness has accidentally caused misunderstandings and drama
or times where we didn’t intend to sound hurtful but that’s how it came across, or times where we’ve blindly followed toxic people, imitating their actions without meaning to or just generally times where we’ve been ignorant little eijjits.
Even people some would say were flawless had flaws or problematic aspects about them
David Bowie wasn’t too nice to his wife Angie in later years, Graham Lineman and Robert Webb are transphobic, Rowan Atkinson supports Boris Johnson’s “so-called” jokes and Ricky Gervais doesn’t like hearing people with different opinions than him.
Overthinking however can exaggerate this, overthinking can take that one time you were a bit rude as a child and that problematic “fandom” phase you had as a preteen and make you feel like your worst person in the world.
Your not, but most of us have had moments, there’s also the “not like other girls/boys phase” sometimes it’s just a light-hearted comparison drawing or blog post taken out of context other times it’s the grown-up equivalent of saying “I like this thing over your other thing that means I’m better than you”
Considering my at times cold thoughts it’s weird that I’m the person of all people telling you this
It’s perfectly ok to be prideful and narcissistic just don’t be so arrogant that you forget about your morals and the people that you're close to, but if at times because of mental health you question your levels of empathy, sympathy and compassion that’s ok too, your voices deserve to be heard, and there is help available you can find it through helplines, organizations or even your own comrades.
Outside of all the twits in this horrid fishbowl of a world, there are also millions of very kind nice people, I don’t know where I’d be now without my comrades
The offline pals who are like my sunshine because they brighten up my day,the old secondary school friends that made me feel less alone, the online people who I can vent to, converse with and joke with, the bloggers from years ago that I still sometimes keep in touch with and the creators who through their work in Media, Theatre and the Arts were able to encourage me to keep going, keep working, keep creating.
I think your all lovely and beautiful and creative human beings, no matter what identity you are, what music genre you listen to or what topping you prefer on your pizza
I will most likely adore you and if I haven’t it’s probably because I haven’t met you yet
You are one biscuit of cells, on this fishbowl planet, your mind is a land of wonder and your body is the garden surrounding it, take care of yourself like how you take care of your garden, your pets or the fictional characters you write about.
Your future might not be the future you expect, but it’s one you’ll enjoy.
if you are doing something you love which harms nobody, be as happy and passionate about it as you like
you are a person who deserves the world
Don’t push yourself too hard, if you know you’re doing a good job keep at it, don’t stress yourself too hard, but remember not to procrastinate, your mental health is important, some people might not understand all of the issues you’re going through, but you can make it out alive.
You're, not a number or statistic you're a person, your a beautiful, Kind, incredible, wise person
spread some love and don’t forget what the late Freddie Mercury said,
Keep yourself Alive!

What We Have Heard, and Seen, and Touched
John Sawyer
Bedford Presbyterian Church
4 / 11 / 21 – Second Sunday of Easter
1 John 1:1-2:2
John 20:19-31
“What We Have Heard, and Seen, and Touched”
(Ear-and-Eye-and-Hand-witness Testimony)
If you are of a certain age, you might remember band called The Monkees, who had a number-one song in 1966 called “I’m a Believer.”[1] Many years later, the song was used in the movie Shrek, which came out twenty years ago this year, if you can believe it. So, if you are of a certain age – from Boomer to Millennial – you might be very familiar with “I’m a Believer”. If you know the song, you also might get the following joke, recently told by my wife’s uncle, Jerry, who happens to be of a certain age. Here’s the joke: “My wife asked me to stop singing ‘I’m a Believer’ by the Monkees. At first I thought she was kidding. . . But then I saw her face!”[2]
Then I saw her face, now I’m a believer.
Not a trace – of doubt in my mind.
I’m in love (Oooooo), I’m a believer
I couldn’t leave her if I tried.[3]
I’ll spare you the rest. . .
Today’s story from the Gospel of John is all about seeing and believing. You heard the story a moment ago: it is evening on the first Easter day and the disciples have just gotten the news from Mary Magdalene that she has seen the risen Jesus. Mary Magdalene is the first eyewitness to the risen Christ. Maybe you can imagine that everyone is excited by this news, but, among the disciples, there are probably a lot of questions as to how, and when, and whether this has happened or not.
As the story goes:
When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the [ruling Jewish authorities], Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” (John 20:19)
Jesus – who had recently been killed on a Roman cross and whose dead body had been laid in a tomb – is now standing in front of them. . . alive. Suddenly, the disciples probably have even more questions about the how’s and when’s of it all, but the question of whether it happened or not does not need to be asked by them anymore. The answer of whether it happened is living and breathing right in front of them. They see his face, and they hear his voice. Now, they are believers.
The scriptures tell us that Jesus shows them his wounded hands that had been pierced by the nails and his side that had been stabbed with a spear. And, again, he tells them “Peace be with you.” (20:21) I don’t know about you, but if I were in their shoes on that first Easter evening, I would likely need Jesus to tell me, “Peace be with you. Calm down. All is well. I’m just resurrected, just as I told you I would be.”
Anyway, here is Jesus: living proof. And all the disciples are the ear-and-eye-witnesses. Well, everyone except Thomas. Many of you might be familiar with the nickname “Doubting Thomas,” that comes from today’s story. For some reason, Thomas is not present when Jesus appears. And then, a full week passes, and, all week long, Thomas has had to hear his friends talking about how Jesus appeared to them, and how it’s some kind of miracle, and how everyone is so happy. And Thomas is so tired of all of this that he says, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hands in his side, I will not believe.” (20:25)
You know, people often talk bad about Thomas for his seeing-and-touching-is-believing mindset. All of us can be this way, from time to time, though. If it can’t be experienced through our God-given senses of sight and touch, or sound, smell, or taste, we won’t believe. Our own human experience will often have a tremendous influence on what we might or might not believe to be true. Sometimes, if someone we trust tells us about something, we’ll believe it, but sometimes, we won’t even believe that.
Who, or what, do you believe? Who, or what, do you trust? These are a big questions – especially because there are so many things that you could believe. And, especially, because it sure can be hard to trust anyone these days.
There has been a lot in the news recently about so-called conspiracy theories about politics, and vaccines, and the moon landing, and UFO’s, and any number of other things. In one radio report about a certain conspiracy theory, I heard a woman who said something like, “I’m a naturally skeptical person, so I’m always questioning everything.” Now, there’s nothing wrong with being skeptical or asking questions about the things that you may hear, read, or see. But too much skepticism can leave a person unmoored to any one particular reality and leave them susceptible to a whole lot of misunderstanding or even to being led astray. . . not necessarily by those with good intentions, either.
So, what are we to do, especially when it comes to the Christian faith? Because, Lord knows there’s plenty of skepticism to go around when it comes to trusting the word of Mary Magdalene and the disciples.
On the surface, all that we have is the story that they tell. So, in today’s reading from the first letter of John, we see someone trying to lovingly and gently tell the story again, from the beginning. Eugene Peterson translates it in this way:
From the very first day, we were there, taking it all in — we heard it with our own ears, saw it with our own eyes, verified it with our own hands. The Word of Life appeared right before our eyes; we saw it happen! And now we’re telling you in most sober prose that what we witnessed was, incredibly, this: The infinite Life of God himself took shape before us. We saw it, we heard it, and now we’re telling you so you can experience it along with us, this experience of communion with the Father and his Son, Jesus Christ. Our motive for writing is simply this: We want you to enjoy this, too. Your joy will double our joy![4]
For the author of First John, hearing and seeing and touching the resurrected Christ goes far deeper than any “proof” – any physical evidence. What seems to matter most, here, is not something experienced by the physical senses, but by the human heart and spirit. “I was there,” the author seems to be saying. “I heard, and saw, and touched. And I want you to know the joy that it all made me feel.” There is more going on, here, than just a story.
Have you ever heard someone tell a story and they get part-way through it and end up throwing their hands up and saying something like, “Well, you just had to be there. Then you’d know what I’m trying to tell you.”? This is not what the author of 1 John seems to be saying. Instead, they are telling us that whether we were there in the room or not on the first Easter, it doesn’t really matter. What does matter is the joy and wonder that extends beyond that resurrection moment, beyond a locked room in Jerusalem long ago, and into our lives right here and right now. There is more than just the story. There is something Holy at work – over, and under, and through the story.
If there is any one thing that has helped to extend the joy and wonder of the first Easter through the ages, we find it back in that room with the risen Jesus and his disciples. Here is Jesus, showing his hands and his side to them. Here are the disciples rejoicing. And then, here is Jesus, saying, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. . .” (John 20:21-22)
Now, I know that in this pandemic year, we have been trying so hard to not have anyone breathe on us or breathe on anyone else in return. But, what Jesus is doing in today’s story is revolutionary. He is, essentially, sending his very human followers, with all of their weaknesses, and worries, and doubts, out into the world as people who are empowered to share his good news. And, in “breathing” the Holy Spirit upon them, he is giving them the essential ingredient to do their good news work. As John Calvin writes, and I’m paraphrasing here,
No one is qualified for doing the difficult job of ministry, and therefore, Christ prepares the Apostles for it by the grace of his Spirit. To govern the church, to represent the eternal salvation of God, and to raise people to heaven is a task far beyond human capacity. We shouldn’t be astonished, therefore, that no one is found qualified unless they are inspired by the Holy Spirit; for no one can speak a word concerning Christ unless the Spirit guides their tongue. . .[5]
For those disciples – who are frightened, then astonished, and then joyful – Jesus gives them the Holy Spirit so that they can carry the joyful and grace-filled story of Easter beyond the locked doors of the house where they are, and into the wide world where they soon will be. And, down through the generations, the Holy Spirit has been passed along, wherever people of faith are living and breathing and telling the story of life that conquers death, of grace that overcomes sin, and of faith that brings assurance even in the midst of doubt.
You and I may not have been there to hear and see and touch on that first Easter, but so many of us have heard and seen and touched the good news of God’s grace that has been shared with us through the loving voices of parents and grandparents, Pastors and Sunday School teachers and other Spirit-filled-and-Spirit-led people who have had an impact on us in the ways they have told us the story, and brought us healing and wholeness, and shown us what God’s love looks like. Each one of them has been the loving face, and hands, and heart of Christ to us and for us. And, because of them, we are part of God’s loving fellowship[6] through the Holy Spirit – the infinite life of God right here and now, in your life and mine. . . in your heart and mine.
As Jesus tells Thomas, “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe.” (20:29) But I’m here to tell you that even if you haven’t seen the actual resurrected body of Jesus, but you have seen God’s grace in your own life, then you have seen, and heard, and known God’s resurrection power. And if you have seen, and heard, and known God’s resurrection power, then – through the wondrous power of the Holy Spirit – you can be a believer. You might have plenty of other questions, but may there be no doubt in your mind of God’s love for you and God’s call for you to share that love with all people.
Let us pray. . .
May we, O God, by grace believe
And thus the risen Christ receive,
Whose raw imprinted hands reached out
And beckoned Thomas from his doubt.[7]
. . . And beckons us from our doubt, too, and into believing what we have heard and seen and touched through the grace of God and the gift of the Holy Spirit – the Spirit that sends us out into the world to share God’s love. . .
In the name of the Father and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Height: 5′3, maybe 5’4 if I’m feeling like lying to myself
Sexuality: lesbian
House: ravenclaw
What image do you use as your wallpaper? On my iPad, my wallpapers are nice pictures of flowers I’ve taken, and on my phone my lock screen is a subtle Carmilla wallpaper, where it’s this blue and black sky and my regular screen is a dark and starry night with a Carmilla quote that is indiscernible since my phone is small because I wanted dark backgrounds so they wouldn’t burn my eyes if I opened my phone in the dark lmao
Have you ever had a crush on a teacher? I had a small crush on my grade 10 science teacher and recently I had a crush on my politics TA if that counts?
Where do you see yourself In ten years? I see myself in a small Toronto apartment, hopefully in a job as either a teacher or an administrator, financially stable, able to pay rent and still going to concerts and chilling with my friends
If you could be anywhere right now where would you be? I’d be in the Austrian countryside in my family’s cottage, close by our farm, sleeping in and then making myself a small Viennese breakfast and think about still being able to visit family in Italy and France after a week or two of relaxation in this little cottage
What was your coolest Halloween costume? One year I went as Sgt. Pepper from The Lonely Hearts Club Band! And last Halloween I used the jacket from that costume to be Minerva from The Wicked + Divine
Favourite 90s tv show? The Nanny!!! I love Friends, Fresh Prince, Living Single, Daria, and Buffy too tho
Last kiss: Tragically, that would have to be my very out there conspiracy theorist/uber-conservative grandma giving me a kiss on the cheek after I fixed her computer yesterday
Have you ever been stood up?: Haven’t really been on a formalized date, but I did once get lost and went to the wrong place and thought I was being stood up by someone haha
Have you ever been to Las Vegas: When I was in California visiting family, I never got the chance to go to Vegas, so no! Plus I wasn’t old enough to do anything legally there, although maybe it’s for the best that I didn’t pull a Degrassi and gamble my tuition savings
Favourite pair of shoes: I have this pair of Nikes that I’ve had for years that I’ve kept clean and in good condition because they look sleek and they’re so comfortable (and they’re also water proof!). I also have a pair of these brown tweed-ish shoes that I think look really cool
Favourite fruit: apples. they’re super accessible, taste great in pie, and they’re super versatile and you can make them in a whole bunch of flavour combinations when cooking! a close second is the apricot, because I love my apricot tree and the jam and syrup I can make with it
Favourite book: Anne of Green Gables. I also LOVE The Tales of Beedle the Bard, Scrappy Little Nobody, Ash, Beauty Queens, the Love is Love anthology from DC, and Sex Criminals and Strangers in Paradise (the comic series’ - not sure if they count as books or not?)
The stupidest thing you’ve ever done: I lied to my mom about being in the elementary school choir for almost a year and a half (i used to be a member but the group leader/music teacher was really mean so I stopped going) and was really sneaky about it until i made a dumb mistake by forgetting about this music competition and when my mom asked why she didn’t get a form from me to sign i spilled everything lmaoooo
also kinda gross but one time I decided to blow my nose right after jaw surgery even though i was told not to and i ended up having a blood clot in my nose and a whole bunch of pressure that didn’t go away for like 2 months so medically speaking that would probably be the dumbest thing I’ve ever done
All-time favourite tv shows: The Fosters, Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman, The Nanny, Golden Girls, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Brooklyn Nine Nine, Living Single, Drag Race, Masterchef, Friends, Bob’s Burgers, and Galavant (it ended before it’s time!!!) - and with time I think I’ll add Crazy Ex Girlfriend and The Good Place
