HD fic recs - disability (blind, mute or deaf)
Here are a few drarry fic recs where either Harry or Draco is blind, mute or deaf, whether it is permanent or temporary. Listed in alphabetical order, as always.
Darkest Before the Dawn by @dualwieldteacup [47k]
The last thing Draco wanted was to show up at Harry Potter’s door, cursed blind and holding a boxful of his friends Transfigured into snakes, but here he was. Between breaking the curse, adjusting to life without sight, and teaching his Defence Against the Dark Arts classes, Draco’s got his hands full. Being forced to live with Harry Potter might just be the death of him. This is a story about the bonds of friendship, fairy tale endings, and learning to ask for help (even from Gryffindors).
The Lip-Lock Jinx  by cassisluna [20k]
It's a jinx that renders the victim mute, unless he/she serves the purpose of the jinx and kisses the person that they desire. It's just Harry's luck that he's in love with Draco.
Obliviation by @dysonrules [26k]
When Harry decides to quit Auror Training in order to care for young Teddy over the summer, he has quite enough to worry about without Pansy Parkinson dumping a mute Draco Malfoy on his doorstep.
The Piano by shushu_yaoi_lj / @orange-peony [37k]
He arrives on a boat during a particularly stormy day. Harry knew Astoria Greengrass had sent for a husband, someone to keep her company on the particularly dreary and dark winter days on this remote island. Harry didn’t know who it was she had arranged to be sent here. All he knew was that the weather was horrid today, and the Portkeys had never properly worked in this remote corner of the North Sea. The island was special, its magic working in odd and surprising ways. The last person Harry expects to find on the beach is Draco Malfoy.
Potential Gravity by @lol-zeitgeistic [32k]
Draco is not good at Cards Against Humanity, but Harry’s not good at being human, so it all works out. Except for the explosions. And Harry’s inability to live when Draco’s not around.
Silenced by the Night by @parkkate [55k]
After a spell goes horribly wrong, Harry has to deal with the loss of his eyesight. It’s such terrible timing, too, because how is he supposed to find out what Malfoy has been up to in the Room of Requirement? It’s not like he can ask the git, not only because it’s Malfoy, but also because the Slytherin has suddenly lost his voice. While they’re both trapped in the hospital wing, however, Harry discovers there’s so much he didn’t know about Malfoy, and it’s highly intriguing, but also a bit alarming. Where did all these confusing feelings come from all of a sudden? And what is Harry going to do about them?
Speechless by mayberry_rose [6k]
In which Draco can’t speak, and Harry learns to listen.
The Standard You Walk Past by @bafflinghaze [46k]
On returning to Hogwarts for their Eighth Year, Headmistress McGonagall decided to room Draco Malfoy and Harry Potter together. She may have hoped for a leading example of house unity; the other students fully expected insults and fights. But nothing happened. That was, until Harry sleepwalked into Draco’s bed.
Talk to Me by Saras_Girl [15k]
When the usual channels of communication are shut down, the most surprising people can find a way in. A strange little love story.
A Thousand Beautiful Things by geoviki [104k]
Draco Malfoy struggles with changed fortunes, shifted alliances, an ugly war, and an unusual spell, with the help of a concerned professor, an insightful house-elf, and an unexpected Gryffindor friend. Delicate Sound of Thunder by geoviki [61k] Draco Malfoy has always known that happily ever after is only true for fairy tales.  When someone threatens to expose his wartime past, he risks his life to protect his secrets, but learns he’s not the only one with something to hide. The sequel to A Thousand Beautiful Things.
When I Put My Eyes On You by Zzzara [31k]
When a hero defeats a villain, there’s supposed to be a happily-ever-after… but when did anything ever happen to Harry Potter the way it was supposed to? Having sacrificed himself to the greater good, Harry is left alone in the darkness, blindly groping for the shreds of the life he knew. When the enemies meet, how is the story supposed to go, once they learn there’s more to it than the eye can see? A story of pain, hope and things we discover, once we stop looking for them with our eyes.
I hope you enjoy these stories as much as I did!

By George, I'm hooked!
So a short while back, while searching for a fic featuring both human and crup George, I tagged a few people whose works I binged recently in a bid to try to recall the author. Amidst the embarrassing chaos where I tagged three guesses (before I finally found the fic written by a fourth), I figured I’d share what it is about these three authors’ writing that has me engaged so thoroughly and often. And to tie it all in a theme, I’ll drop a rec of their fics that feature George Weasley.
An assortment of delights 💝🍫
@schmem14 masterfully crafts the most delicious and unique ideas. Like a box of mystery-flavour chocolates, trying each one gives a new delightful experience of Em’s stories and interpretations of prompts, plots and pairings. And I find myself reaching for another, and another and another…
I have especially really enjoyed her collections where she takes on themes in her inimitably creative way. I’d really recommend checking out the George ones in her collections too, and for now I’ll leave you with this rec:
Peeling Potatoes (Harry/George) (T, 585)
George is still grieving Fred. Harry offers a moment of peace.
An immersive binge-a-thon 🎥🍿
@the-francakes' fics are such a vibe. She has me absolutely engrossed in a variety of stories; it really feels like a chill, cinematic experience. I love browsing through each enticing summary (and lovely banner!) of both old favourites and new updates. I’m always happily transported right there in the bubble of the world she’s created, rooting for the characters and absolutely flailing at the gorgeous plot, until I reach the end and float right along to the next one.
Here's a George rec from her catalogue:
Helping Hands™ (Hermione/George) (G, 1510)
George shows Hermione his new Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes product, Helping Hands™. And they help more than he expected.
A familiar comfort 😌💙
I always sink into @orange-peony's fics with the most satisfying feeling. Her fics are a pleasure to enjoy, curled up in bed with “entire work” clicked, squeeing, sobbing, smiling into a pillow. Her fics are always thrilling in their emotional rollercoaster, and never fail to warm my heart and make me just… feel with every fibre of myself. I absolutely love and crave that reading experience.
This fic is a quintessential example of that Peony experience:
Mirror, Mirror (Lee/George) (E, 22,759)
George feels a wave of relief washing over him at the thought that he still has time, that he can still get his shit together and stop feeling so utterly broken every single moment of the day, and then maybe he will be good enough for Lee. Sometimes he feels like the pain and the loss have woven through every fibre of his being, that his whole body is made out of grief, raw and wretched beyond repair. But then Lee takes his hand, or he threads his fingers through George’s hair, whispering something that George can only feel against his skin, lost words that make him shudder and reach for Lee, to feel him there and have him close. Real.
I hope you enjoy these fics, and check out these authors’ other works on their ao3s as well! Do remember to leave them some love 🥰 And as always, please mind the tags~
An eternal gratitude
Thanks to @stavromulabetaaa and @getawayfox for looking this over! (and for sparking the memory of the fic in the first place~) ❤️❤️

Accidental Magic
Written for Emma (@ladderofyears) as part of the microfic server Wheel of Drarry Mini-Exchange. I really hope you enjoy it Emma, your writing is always so soft and lovely. I really tried to write you a gentle family fic but this silly thing was the best I could do! ❤️❤️
Thanks to Peony (@orange-peony) for beta-reading ❤️

“You’re honestly telling me you’re not the least bit concerned?”
“Hadn’t even crossed my mind,” Harry replied, distractedly, wand trained on their son as he zipped joyfully in and out of the trees.
Draco pushed himself up on his elbows with a huff. “Well, it’s crossed mine. He’s six, nearly six-and-a-half now, and still nothing. By his age I’d blown up at least three house-elves, thrown Pansy in the lake and destroyed Granny Druella’s best tea set. Mother always said that my tantrums were the stuff of legend.”
“Still are,” muttered Harry with a glint in his eye. Draco elbowed him. Harry squinted into the lazy morning sun, sighing at the crease which had appeared between Draco’s eyebrows; clearly, he wasn’t going to let this one go.
“I’m serious! There are people we could take him to – ways to be sure …”
“Dad, watch this!” They both turned to wave as Scorpius sailed past. Dark curls streamed out behind him, pointy chin tucked in tight as he leant flat across his broom in a racing stance. Harry grinned at the concentration on his face, nudging Draco’s bare feet where they lay atop the dewy grass. Draco’s expression didn’t change, and Harry lowered his wand, rolling over on the picnic blanket to face his husband. A light breeze ruffled Draco’s hair, and Harry pressed a kiss to his forehead.
“I just don’t understand why it matters to you. Wouldn’t you love him just the same with or without magic?”
Draco rolled his eyes. “What a ridiculously Gryffindor thing to ask. Of course I’d still love our son, Harry, but there’s no sense denying that it would change things.” He gestured at Scorpius, giggling on his broom, feet skimming the dandelions as he whizzed back and forth. “Quidditch, for example. I know how much you love going up to Hogwarts to watch Teddy play, after all.”
“There’s more to life than Quidditch , Draco! Besides, he might not be into sports at all. He could play football, or –” They both ducked as Scorpius sped overhead with a whoosh , a dark blur against the piercing blue sky.
“Dad! Daddy! Look, no hands!”
“That’s great, Scorp!” called Draco cheerfully, before turning back to Harry. “It’s obviously not just Quidditch, though. Imagine if he couldn’t go to Hogwarts at all! Watching all his friends, including Rose – who, according to Hermione, might as well be halfway through first year already with all her accidental magic – go off on the adventures he’s dreamed about. And for us too: no waving from the platform at Kings Cross, no owls bringing the good news when he’s sorted into Slytherin…”
“Dad!”
“Looking good, Scorpius!” Harry scowled at his husband. “That’s if he’s sorted into Slytherin.”
Draco grinned lazily. “Harry, no Malfoy has been sorted outside of Slytherin in over six centuries. And besides, you know Scorp. He might look like a Potter, but if my son isn’t a Slytherin through-and-through, I’ll eat the Sorting Hat myself.”
“Daddy! Look at me!”
“Anyway, just think of the adaptations we’d have to make! We’d have to learn the Muggle way to do everything. He’d go to one of those schools down the road and study all those peculiar subjects, like Computation and – and Fizzlicks!”
“Physics?”
“Whatever, Harry.” A dragonfly hovered overhead, wings shimmering in the sunlight. Irritated, Draco swatted it away.
“Dad! Daddy!”
Harry laid a reassuring hand on Draco’s arm. “Well when you put it like that, I suppose things would have to change.” A mischievous smile spread across his face. “Wow, just imagine if he invited Muggles over here. You might have to wear jeans .”
“Dad! You’re not LOOKING!”
Draco paled. “Oh Merlin, we’d have to install eleck-izity. You know how awful Muggle lighting is for my complexion, Harry!”
“God, you’re both so ANNOYING!” Scorpius roared, enraged. “LOOK AT ME!”
A blinding flash of light heralded a loud rushing noise and a familiar squeezing sensation. Harry shivered, a gust of wind sweeping his hair off his face, the ground suddenly rough and cold beneath him. As his vision cleared, he realised, to his horror, that he’d been deposited atop the chimney stack. Heart racing, he wrapped his arms tightly around the pot in front of him, praying that no-one chose that moment to come through on the Floo.
He heard a loud scrabbling noise to his right, followed by an indignant squawk and the flapping of wings. Harry laughed heartily as he spotted Draco, bare feet scraping over tiles, scrambling to pull himself up onto the ridge of the roof.
“You were saying?” Harry called over, more than a little smug despite his precarious position. “We should take him to see someone?”
“Fine,” came Draco’s distant reply, sulky and a little nervous. “You were right, okay?”
Cackling laughter drifted up from the ground below, and they both looked down. Scorpius had landed his broom by the pond and was wheezing hysterically, shielding his eyes and pointing up to where the two of them were perched, silhouetted against the bright blue sky.
“Actually, I take it back,” Harry shouted. “You were right. That kid’s definitely a Slytherin.”

What do you think would be Harry Potter's name if he was a girl? Or if he had a sister?
This reminds me of another ask I got about what would Lily Potter (née Evans)’s parents names be?
There’s a fanon that on Lily’s mother side of the family, all the girls get flower names. It could be possible that if Harry was born a girl or if he had a sister they would’ve gotten a flower name. Around that time -- 1980s -- the popular flower girls names in the UK were Heather, Holly, Hazel, Daisy, Flora, Laurel, Rowan, Rose and so on.
Other options are Hyacinth, Poppy, Dahlia, Lilac, Peony, etc. However, this is a fictional story so you don't have to be super accurate about names that were used during that time period. I doubt wizards or witches cared or bothered to keep track what names the muggles would find extremely unusual or weird. Though, the muggleborns would most likely make sure that any children of theirs wouldn’t be given a ridiculous name though.
What we do know is that Harry Potter was named after his great-grandfather Henry Potter. The name Henry derives from the Old French name Henri, and over time (during the medieval period) the English version – Harry – started to be used more in the UK. Most monarchs called Henry were referred to by those who knew them as Harry.
It’s mention in canon that Harry’s grandfather Fleamont gave his son a old-fashioned named like James to prevent him from being bully like he was when he was in Hogwarts. It’s also possible that Lily and James would’ve gone with a old-fashioned female name too. Maybe something like Victoria, Elizabeth, Katherine, Charlotte, Alexandra, Beatrice, Helena, Amalia, etc.?
It’s more likely that they would’ve named their daughter after James’ great-grandmother, which unfortunately her name is unknown to us. But that does mean that it can be be anything. It might even be something a bit out there or uncommon but not unusual. Some suggestions would be Magdalena, Anastasia, Isadora, Cordelia, Adelaide, Phyllida, Seraphina, Hildreth, Araminta, Eulalia, Gwendolyn, Aurelia, Evelyn, Hesperia, Marion, Mildred, Amaltheia, Wilhelmina, Lorraine, Matilda, Agatha, Camilla, Edna, Cosima, Eleanor, Gabriella, Philippa, Ethel, Lucia, Gwyneth, Winifred, Xenia, etc.
If Lily and James went in this direction they would probably picked a flower for a middle name too. The middle name usually honors a family member so it might’ve been Lily’s name or her mother’s name. For example: Harry’s full name is Harry James Potter, so it could’ve been something like [James’ Great-Grandmother’s Name] [Lily’s Name or Lily’s Mother Name] Potter.
Something that I also see often in stories is changing Harry’s name into Harriet Potter. The only way I could see that working is if Harry was suddenly turned into a girl because of a potion or spell mishap. In which case it would make better sense that he would want to keep being called Harry by claiming that it’s short for Harriet, Henrietta, Harrella, Harrilyn, or a variation of it.
Or that Lily and James thought they were having a boy and had the papers filled out in advance with the name Harry. But that’s a bit strange since nearly all parents tend to compile a list of names that they like for both genders. They usually wait until the baby is out for them to see what name clicks into place when they lay their eyes on their child. Plus, surprises do happen, such as expecting a boy, but getting a girl instead, vice versa or twins/triplets instead of what they originally thought. But we're also dealing with magical parents, magical nurses and doctors in a magical hospital. So unless James and Lily got a incompetent (or even unmotivated or apathetic) healer or mediwizard such mistakes are unlikely to happen.

shout out to @twothumbsandnostakeincanon, who has been having the best reactions to my snippets.
flowershop!au Steter
The first time Peter comes in Stiles has been working at his mother’s shop for three years. He knows the ins and outs of flower arrangements, from what each flower means to how to care for his plants.
“No, Talia, I’m not going to forget. I'm in the middle of something now, I’ll—yes, I’ll call you back.”
The guy slammed his thumb against the End Call button, scowling. Stiles thought he might feel a tad batter slamming down a landline, but in the sleek age of modern technology he had to bare with abusing the glass screen of his phone.
Blue eyes caught on amber, and Stiles grimaced sympathetically. He didn't actually give a shit, but one of the first things his mother taught him is that your florist is basically your therapist. They’re there for the special occasions, like weddings or funerals, and they’re there when you’ve fucked up and need a grand apology. Stiles has several regulars who come in about twice a month after fighting with their significant others.
“Trouble with the SO?” he prompts.
“With my sister,” the man huffed, hands smoothing nonexistent wrinkles out of his v-neck. “Can I get an extremely insulting bouquet that still looks lovely?”
Stiles grins, because that’s always one of his favorite requests. He has a bit of a cult following on Instagram for his insulting arrangements, and a quarter of his business is online orders. This is only the second time he’s gotten such a request in person.
“Sure thing, can I get a name for the order?”
“Peter Hale.”
Amber eyes flashed in recognition, but that wasn’t overly surprising. Beacon Hills was a small town, and the Hales had a big presence in it.
“Ah. I’m Stiles,” the man offered, gaze darting to the computer screen as his fingers tapped over the keyboard. “What’s your price range, Mr. Hale?”
“Up to a hundred dollars.”
Stiles nodded, typing something else in, and then he grinned.
“Cool, so I have a fresh bloom of peonies, which are kind of a double edged sword since they have so much meaning tied to them. The most common—and positive—interpretation is prosperity and compassion, but they can also mean shame and indignation depending on what we pair them with.”
“For example, is she overbearing? If so butterfly weeds mean ‘leave me alone,’ and if we display them prominently it sets the mood for the whole bouquet.”
“Definitely overbearing,” Peter agreed, watching Stiles rather intently. “She likes peonies, as well, so it would be rather suitable as a birthday present.”
“A birthday present? How sweet.”
Peter smirked at him, shrugging loosely. It seemed he didn’t mind the sass, which was good because Stiles wasn’t the best at tuning it back, even at work.
“Come with me, I’ll show you the flowers so you can make sure they’re to your liking before I cut them.”
“Been burned before?”
Stiles snorted as if he’d just told a grand joke of some kind, though he smelled slightly bitter. “You could say that.”
“What about those?” Peter asked, gesturing towards the carnations.
“We could do yellow carnations,” he said slowly. His tone alone told Peter it was hardly a good idea. “But the meaning is pretty widely known, and if you’re using a bouquet for your insults I’m pretty sure subtly is the goal here. Though you’re on the right track, aesthetically speaking… how about orange lilies? They resemble pride and disdain.”
“Both of which apply,” Peter acquiesce. He wasn’t the expert here, after all.
“Let’s see… Peonies, butterfly weeds, orange lilies—monkshood would go well, but better not. Petunias would add the same depth of color to balance out the brightness…”
“What do petunias symbolize?”
“Anger and resentment,” Stiles relayed absently, carefully cutting a few of the proud purple flowers. “Rowling named Harry’s aunt aptly, at least.”
Peter smirked at that, offering a hand to help Stiles off his knees.
Stiles grinned his thanks, levering himself up with a firm grip. Their chests brushed at the sudden proximity, but the boy didn’t seem to take any note of this, eyes already refocused on the plants in his hand.
He smelled very nice, Peter noted. Like the flowers he surrounded himself with, clean sweat, and a deep, spicy musk.
“Alright, a few green sprigs for aesthetics and then I’ll arrange it. You want it wrapped, or in a vase?”
“Wrapped is fine, I have a vase ready at home.” His breath brushed against Stiles’ cheekbone.
The boy glanced up, seeming to only just realize their proximity. He smiled somewhat sheepishly, taking a step back. “Sorry, dude, I didn’t mean to get in your space.”
“I was hardly complaining,” Peter purred, just to see what he would do. There was a brief flash of startlement, before Stiles smirked back at him.
“Noted.”

Your name, please? Robyn. Are you heartbroken right now? No, my heart’s doing okay. If so, how long have you been heartbroken? Do you like the area you live in? I like that it’s a lot quieter than the metro, but we get everything we could also get in the city nonetheless. Right now it’s just a little unsettling since the Taal Volcano erupted and we have ashfall land all over our house, but otherwise where we live is pretty decent and uneventful for the most part. Do you ever get complimented on your eyes? What color are they? It’s not my strongest feature so no, not really. They’re dark brown/almost black.
What facial feature do you like the best on a person? Everyone has their different strong suits, so. Do you like to be called baby? Only by my parents and my girlfriend, because otherwise that would be creepy. What is your favorite flower? I like roses, sunflowers, and peonies. Idk, my answers to this question changes every time so it’s safe to say they’re only my favorites today. When did you last use the restroom? Five minutes ago. I went before starting this. How long is your hair? Pretty long. I haven’t had it cut since late in 2018; if I throw my head slightly back it already reaches my hips. I plan to keep it long until my graduation shoot, so I won’t be going to the salon for at least another month. Do you have braces? I used to. Do you have any freckles? Nope. What is your favorite Internet meme? There was a local meme going around last week and it involved people making hilarious puns out of celebrity names and pairing them with Photoshopped pictures of the celebrities to match the pun – for example, a local celeb named Rico Blanco was styled as Rico Blanket and a photo of him was shopped so that he’s in bed wrapped in a blanket :(((( OK IT DOESN’T SOUND FUNNY RN but all the entries were hilarioussssss I swear. Unfortunately everyone hopped on the meme train and it died in like a week. How many windows does your room have? Two big windows but each have four tiny window panes in them that can be opened. Do you have a rug in your room? What color is it? No. My dog likes peeing on rugs so we don’t like having them laying around. What is the weirdest animal you've ever held? I don’t think any animal is weird... but the coolest ones I’ve ever held are a snake, an eagle, a sea turtle, and a crocodile. The first three I got to meet in Bali, and the crocodile was from Palawan. Do you get extremely hyper when under the influence of sugar? No. I never really believed in that either. What about caffeine? I get pretty talkative, yes. I also talk like I have built-in exclamation points lol. Have you ever tried any drugs? If so, did you regret it? No, I haven’t. Do you have any pregnant friends? None of my friends are, but I can never be sure anymore when it comes to people I know. I always say no to this question, then sooner or later someone I know gives birth kfdgkdjfhd like a classmate from high school just had her third kid and no one even had any idea she was pregnant again. Guess I’ll just keep answering this question with a shrug. Have you seen anyone lately that you knew but didn't remember from where? Yeah, this was me for a few seconds when I arrived in my history class for our first day last Friday and I saw several people that I knew I know, but I had to recollect my thoughts. I eventually remembered who they were, but for a few seconds I was stumped. When was the last time you toilet papered or egged someones house? I’ve never done this, because you don’t do this in the Philippines. Do you usually dress up for Halloween? Some years I would. When ordering food, what do you usually get as a drink? I always get ala carte because I only drink water (I get full quicker if I have any other drink), and service water is always there. Put your favorite color and favorite animal. EX: Silver walrus Pink dog. When drawing something, do you try to be super precise or do you not care? I don’t care for drawing and am aware of just how bad I am at it, so I barely make any effort when I have to. When was the last time you snapped at someone? Sunday morning. My mom was playing a mobile game where the character will only be able to move if you scream, so she was screaming her ass off at 7 AM and I was worried it would wake the neighbors up. Does it bug you when people clap with their palms? HAHAHAHAHA like Nicole Kidman? Oh man. I’ve never actually seen someone clap the way she did in real life, so I don’t know if it would bug me. I know it’d send me laughing, though. Have you hugged anyone today? Just my dog. Classes have been suspended because of the Taal erupting, so I’m not seeing anyone else today. How many languages do you know how to say 'happy birthday' in? Filipino, English, Spanish, French, and Korean, so make that five. What language would you like to learn that you don't already know? Korean, just because I watch so many Korean shows as it is lmao. Are you able to take this language at your school? Yes, but it’s not required in my curriculum so I’ve never taken a Korean language elective. Have you ever been into a bar? Yes, I’ve always preferred bars to clubs so I’ve gone to a lot of them. What ethnicity are you? Broadly, Austronesian. But specifically, I’m Filipino, and even more specifically, Tagalog. How much makeup do you wear? None. I usually wear makeup only for special events, or if I absolutely had to, like for my graduation shoot. If you could fly, what kind of wings would you have? I’d like pink sparkly ones please hahahaha. Write some lyrics from the song stuck in your head right now. Nothing’s playing in my head at the moment. Do you like that song? Would you describe yourself as 'fiesty'? You mean feisty? I can bring out that side of me if I have to, but I’m not naturally it. How corny is High School Musical in your opinion? Pretty fucking corny. But I love the series and it’ll always be an important part of my childhood, so I’m never going to hate it. Have you actually read Twilight? Yes. I don’t know how I started getting into it though; I just remember it became insanely popular in the fourth grade and all of a sudden I wanted the Twilight boxed set for Christmas. What about Harry Potter? Yes, I read most of the books. My sister got into HP when she was aroundddd 10-11ish and my parents also got her a boxed set, so I borrowed each book after she finished them. Out of the two, which is better? Twilight.
Name a member of the Beatles! Ringo Starr. Who was the name of your first crush? My first real crush was Andi. How long ago was that? Eleven years ago. Do you still know that person? She migrated to New Zealand nine years ago, so we got disconnected for a long time and that’s when we got cut off. We’re Facebook friends now, but it’s never been the same. Happy for her, though. Can you handle your emotions very well? Usually I can, but when I’m at my breaking point then I’m at my breaking point. How often do you read books? Once every five years :(( JK uhhhhh I read loads, just not from books, and particularly not anything fictional. Are you the jealous type? I can be when there’s reason to, yep. Are you the type of person who gets jealous of people's pasts? No. And usually people regret their past, so I don’t feel jealous about that. Have you ever gotten an ear infection from riding an airplane? No. My ears were incredibly uncomfortable during my first plane ride though, and it didn’t help that I was already panicking long before the flight started. Anyway, my ears never fully ~popped and I was like 80% deaf for the entire plane ride. When was the last time you witnessed someone throw up? The last time someone threw up, it was me lol. But if we’re gonna be strict about the question, it wassssss last April I think. When was the last time YOU threw up? Sometime around May last year. Do you know anyone who faints at the sight of blood? ME. I’m anyone who faints at the sight of blood. Maybe not literally faint but I do feel super nauseous and weak and dizzy and I’d sometimes gag too. Hmm. I wonder how those girls have their period. Yeah well it’s not a very fun 3-4 days for me, my dude. Don't you just love the Cottonelle puppy? I don’t know what that is. Can you do any 'magic' tricks? No. Do you know how to play Checkers? I used to as a kid, because we used to have lots of board games. But since it was the game we barely ever played, I eventually forgot the rules. What clubs are you in at school? I’m in one of the two journalism organizations, and I also joined the graduation committee this year so that I get to contribute something for our batch :) What do you fear most in this world? Either falling from a very high place or drowning. And injections. What do your siblings fear most in this world? I know my sister is afraid of big crowds, chaotic situations, and small spaces. I don’t know what my brother fears, nor do I really care. What was the last sentence you heard anyone say? I’m listening to a mukbang ASMR right now and the last thing the girl said was her basically describing what she’s about to eat. Is Taylor more of a boy's name or a girl's name? I know we’re not supposed to care about this anymore, but if I really had to think about this question I see it as a boy’s name. But I also see that it works on girls just as nicely, so. What about Dylan? Boy’s name. But it sounds so badass on girls, and I prefer it as a girl’s name. What colors are the eyes of your family members? Dark brown/black. Filipinos all look the same, dude. Are you related to anyone with red hair? No. Do you know anyone with super super green eyes? Other than celebrities, no. What color was your hair when you were little? It has always been black. What color is it now? ^ Were you a chubby baby? I was a pretty chubby young kid especially from the ages of 3-5, but I was an okay-sized baby/toddler. I’d be surprised if I was chubby considering my mom and dad are both slim. What is your favorite mythical creature? Not a fan of those. Do you know anyone with a mullet? No, I don’t think so. Put down a random word here. Watermelon. What is your favorite fruit? Avocado. Now what is your favorite flavor of lollipop? Chocolate. If you combine your 2 above answers and make a perfume would it smell good? Probably not. They’re so different. Do you always feel like you have to be the best? Yes. That’s why I always take it hard when I end up not being that. Are you looking forward to summer? Yes, because I’ll get to rest. No, because it will be my last summer until I die. Are you wearing socks right now or are you barefoot? I’m barefoot. Socks always feels like they’re there, and I don’t like that feeling. What's on your favorite necklace? I’m not regularly wearing any necklace these days. How many hours of sleep did you get last night? Around seven, which is okay for me. Which is better: gingerbread or butterscotch? Caramel or peanut butter? Nutella or chocolate? Do you own an iPad? We own a family iPad, but no one’s used it in a while. I was the one who used it last as a means to work and communicate, back when I broke my phone and didn’t have a new laptop yet in my first year of college. I honestly hope that iPad never dies on us, since there’s a load of great memories there. Do you watch Glee? No and as someone who hates song covers, I think I’m better off not watching it skksjfdhgfg. How hard is it for you to get out of bed in the morning? When that day would require me to do something I dread, like attend a class I hate, it will be a lot harder for me to get up. But generally I’m pretty okay, as long as I set my alarm 30 minutes to an hour before I actually have to get up so that I have enough time to properly wake up. How many books are in the current room you're in? I’m in the dining room so there are zero books around. Have you ever witnessed an aircraft break the sound barrier? No. I also never really knew what that means, but I know I’ve never seen that. Do you keep a sketchpad in your room? I don’t draw, so I never needed one. Is there anything you do right before you go to sleep? Put water on my dog’s bowl – he likes drinking before we doze off. What color is your favorite purse? I only use one and it’s pink. How much money is currently in your wallet? ₱2,000. Do you get an allowance? Yes. How many songs are on your iPod? Don’t use an iPod these days. Do you usually have sweet dreams or nightmares? My dreams are either weird or nightmares. I never get any sweet ones. How has the weather been lately? It’s a little gloomy and cloudy. I don’t know if it’s an effect of the volcano eruption nearby, or if the weather is just like this. When was the last earthquake you felt? It was either August or September.

I Liked This Fic and I Think You Will Too
I mean, 'liked' is an understatement. I absolutely adore this story and the BEAUTIFUL art, and I think about it all the time. This story is a shining example of what happens when two incredibly talented artists join forces over the exact right idea/vibe/prompt and just absolutely go OFF.
@orange-peony is an absolute genius at cultivating a romantic intimacy that feels almost tangibly humid in its warmth and closeness (see: this recent microfic), and that skill is on full display in this fic nearly from the first moment. Peony dives head first into the idea that we all feel (and maybe are) monstrous in our own ways, and that we have to confront the fact that our existence in this world will--probably, inevitably--hurt others whether we intend it to or not. But it's how we see that and do our best to lessen the hurt that matters.
Monster gives us a version of touch-starved Harry that I have never encountered before, but who is still so familiar as quintessentially Harry--self sacrificing, committed to fairness and justice, impulsive, and fiercely kind. And Draco! Lovely, pretty, talented Draco who doesn't believe he is allowed to want good things for himself. Every single interaction between them in this story is tender and generous and immensely satisfying, whether it's the briefest touch or conversation, or something much more (😈).
I really feel like this story has everything (that I, personally, ever want)--interesting careers, fascinating creature lore, brilliant magical theory, mystery and intrigue, and so much love. I would also be remiss if I didn't mention the absolutely sickening (affectionate) Blairon woven throughout the fic. 98% of my comments on Peony's draft were some version of "YES RON DESERVES THIS 😭😭😭😭".
This story is like a sweeping romance wearing a casefic as a trench coat. I don't know how Peony does it, but damn, it has been DONE.
And the art?! The ART. The piece that inspired the story is just...a whole epic in and of itself, but the other pieces that @pato-roldnart created to go along with the fic?? Incredible. Stunning. Spot on. Some cosmic synergy happened in the creation of this masterpiece, I tell you what.
Tumblr media
Drarry + minor Blairon I Explicit I 71k I Veela + werewolf Draco, touch-starved Harry, odd jobs, fluff and smut with a sprinkle of angst, cursed music boxes, d/s dynamics, praise kink, intimacy and lots of smut, a cottage in the woods, Pato’s amazing art.
Summary: “Hmm,” Hermione hums, tapping her index finger against her bottom lip and then smiling at Harry. “A broken music box, you say…”
“A cursed one,” Harry corrects her.
“Well, it’s still a music box that is not working properly,” Hermione points out with a very intent grin. “That will give you a chance to see him.”
She wiggles her eyebrows, making him snort.
As if Harry hadn’t thought about it straight away. As if Harry’s mind hadn’t immediately wandered to Draco Malfoy the moment Zabini mentioned a music box.
Words cannot express how grateful and lucky I feel for the chance I had to do a collab with the amazing @pato-roldnart for the Drarry Reverse Bang. 💙 Pato has been an absolute dream to work with from day one, and they not only drew some mind-blowing art pieces for this story (and the beautiful banner!), but they also gave me so many ideas for this fic. Thank you for being the best partner in crime ever (and for all the Pingu gifs)!
A massive thank you goes to my betas @m0srael and @curlyy-hair-dont-care. Thank you so much for your enthusiasm and patience, and for all the lovely comments you left on my fic!
I couldn’t have done this without the moral support of the brilliant @avenueofesc who virtually held my hand throughout the writing process and screamed in my google docs and made me feel like I could do it. A heartfelt thank you to @bubble-gumhead for being so sweet and supportive.
Last but not least, I would like to thank the fantastic mods of the @harrydracobang for running the fest and for all their help and hard work. Thank you!

Tumblr media
— basics
▸ is your muse tall/short/average? she’s average. 5 ft, 8 inches. but in heels she’s a bit taller. ( & she’s usually in heels )
▸ are they okay with their height? she wishes she was a bit taller for runway modeling reasons ( she’s on the shorter end of the spectrum ) but with her personality, she is more suited for photo modeling.
▸ what’s their hair like? long, fine, silken crimson but can look various shades of red depending on the light. there’s tons of fine strands of hair that give it that perfect thick, full appearance without the matted, frizzy appearance without product. the longer she spends in the sun, certain strands will lighten to create blood orange highlights. it is styled various ways - the usually is blow dried into beachy waves, cut into multiple thick layers with sideswept bangs, alternating between long & short in style depending on her mood at the salon. it is NEVER artificially covered.
▸ do they spend a lot of time on their hair/with their grooming? always. she attempts to exude physical perfection.
▸ does your muse care about their appearance? always - when she is to be seen. when at home, by herself, it’s a messy bun & comfy clothes. she works out often to combat her addiction to cheese fries & various other junk foods. she is dressed well, not a hair or eyelash out of place. she attempts the natural look as opposed to the layers of makeup others may do.
▸ does your muse care about what others think about them? she does despite seeming as if she doesn’t. the majority of her interactions will fall into the role she plays which is the blissfully unaware party girl -  mary jane watson without a thought in her head. pfft.
— preferences
▸ indoors or outdoors?    both - she’s not a big camper though. ▸ rain or sunshine?    sunshine ▸ forest or beach?    beach ▸ precious metals or gems?    gems   ▸ flowers or perfumes?    both - vanilla & peony perfume  ▸ personality or appearance?    both ▸ being alone or being in a crowd?    in a crowd ▸ order or anarchy?    order ▸ painful truths or white lies?    she’s a master of white lies.  ▸ science or magic?    both ▸ peace or conflict?    peace ▸ night or day?    both ▸ dusk or dawn?    dawn ▸ warmth or cold?    warmth ▸ many acquaintances or a few close friends?    many acquaintances ( younger ), few close friends ( older ) ▸ reading or playing a game?     playing a game
— questionnaire
▸ what are some of your muse’s bad habits? her tendency to turn to alcohol when times get rough, burying her problems & issues in partying, longing to forget rather than face it & fight it. she often gnaws on her bottom lip or the inside of her cheek when concentrating. smoking is another bad habit she ends up picking up - usually it is just one here & there from a pack she has stashed & hidden away. she tries to not become a chain smoker. just enough to take the edge off. mj internalizes a lot of her own internal conflict & what haunts her from her past. mj tends to run from her problems.
▸ has your muse lost anyone close to them? how has it affected them? (+ headcanons) her mother. it was the catalyst to the mask mary jane wears, the role she plays. it sent her spiraling into this grief - stricken recklessness - partying, alcohol, drugs, anything that would numb her. why ?  because she felt like she failed her mother. because my mj is mcu based in her main verse, her mother was present in nyc with the first invasion & she was exposed to various alien tech. months later her mother fell ill. mj was going back & forth from their home in pennsylvania to nyc to try to find answers from anyone who would listen, many times she ended up in the atrium of stark / avengers tower.  but she was too late, she was beckoned back home, her mother passing moments before she arrived. mary jane never got the chance to say goodbye. the grief she felt could have brought the strongest man to his knees. she felt she had failed her mother. it is the underlying piece of self - hatred that haunts her & serves to destroy her. it is her mother that wanted her to chase after dreams of stardom, it was her mother who fostered the strong, resilient personality, it was her mother’s mistakes she wants to learn from & avoid ever becoming like her.  it doesn’t help that every time she looks in the mirror she can see her mother staring back. she often spends nights talking up to the night sky, speaking to her, still apologizing after telling her about her day, week, relationships, crushes, auditions, etc. she wears her mother’s diamond star necklace constantly as well as carries a photo of the two of them in her wallet in all times. she has also collected her mother’s old playbills & scripts.
▸ what are some fond memories your muse has? one was when gayle would come home from ballet & teach little mj some moves, giggling as she would topple over. another was curled up on the sofa with her mother watching awful daytime soap operas with heaping bowls of buttery rich popcorn. each & every moment they spent free from their father. the day she met peter parker, harry osborn & any of her other friends she’s grown to love ( though she may hardly mention it ). another was her arrival to nyc, moving in with her aunt. practicing lines with her mother for any play she was in. the standing ovation she received for her performance as cinderella in a school play in elementary school as well as the ruckus she caused performing c.herry b.omb at a school talent show in the fashion of ms. curry’s performance while a teen.
▸ is it easy for your muse to kill? not at all. the girl is a fighter despite being simply human.
▸ what’s it like when your muse breaks down? she’s secluded, door locked, tears streaming, terrified that may never cease. the length of the breakdown depends on how long it takes her to snap out of it, regain her composure & return to her role. it could be 5 minutes to a stretch of days or small moments throughout an entire year.
▸ is your muse capable of trusting someone with their life? yes. the obvious example is with spider - man ( who totally isn’t peter parker ).  she appears naive & easily trusting to others but she’s not, not at all.
▸ what’s your muse like when they’re in love? evasive yet persistent. distant yet near. she becomes a walking erratic contradiction & the subject of her love & adoration will often grow frustrated or confused with her behaviour. mj never wants to sacrifice her rise to stardom & dreams for love like her mother & sister did.  she wants the closeness, the companionship, the euphoria but feels guilty & scared. her lovers will often meet many, many emotional barriers because she has to remove that mask & step away from the constant spotlight she places on herself to appear genuine, deep & allow them close enough to love her in turn. but if they know about her past, her failures, how could they love her ?

For the botanical asks: jasmine, bird of paradise, everlasting daisys, lavender dream, night owl, lantana, wisteria, lunaria, peony, tea rose and carnation!!
jasmine; what mythical creature do you wish actually existed?
What do you mean, mermaids and unicorns don’t exist???
bird of paradise; what was the best thing that happened to you this month?
I cleaned my room! Well, I started cleaning my room and got a big chunk of it done, which seems like such an underwhelming thing to do - but if you had seen it? My floors were non-existent, covered in stuff to the actual height of my actual bed. I had to climb over it to get into my bed to sleep, it was that bad. This always tends to happen when my depression flares up really bad, and now I have two pretty rugs laying down and can admire how nice it is to sit on the wooden flooring. I love it. I’m really embarrassed to talk about it, but I think it’s important, especially for other people who struggle with similar tasks. Now onto the shelves!
everlasting daisy; what’s the last dream you remember having?
I recall that I was talking to several people about something pretty serious, and it was snowing outside. That’s all I can remember, and the fact that it was very vivid.
lavender dream; turn ons/offs?
Like, sexually? *wiggles eyebrows*
Sorrynotsorry. See, this is what happens when you send me asks after midnight and I happen to be still awake to reply. XD I’ll keep it SFW, but I am actually very open when it comes to that topic, so if anyone wants to talk about topics that are…less safe for work with me? I’m down for that too. Just keep in mind that I’m a woman who has zero experience with men.
Back to the question - I hate it when people cut other people off while talking. It happens to me occasionally, but I’m trying very hard to get rid of that habit. I cannot stand people who need to put other people down in order to elevate themselves.
I have a thing for people who can laugh. They don’t have to be all smiles all the time, but it’s refreshing if people occasionally don’t take themselves too seriously.Simultaneously, I like people with whom I can have the deepest of conversations, in the most casual of settings. About literally anything. But also - a big turn on is when I can be with someone and just - do nothing. Example: I was at a friend’s once; we were both in her room, I read my book, she read hers, and we were super content like that. We still enjoyed each others’ presence, and it was really really nice.
night owl; how many countries have you visited?
Lemme see - Germany, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Austria, Ireland, Scotland, England - nine if I’m going to treat Scotland and England as independent entities?
Also we were with, like, one car wheel on Liechtenstein territory once, but I don’t think that counts.
lantana; what’s on your mind right now?
It’s about 02:45 am as we speak, and I should be sleeping, but right now I am actually thinking about whether or not I should go out and buy some scented candles tomorrw, and if so, which ones.
wisteria; whom do you admire and why?
There are many people whom I admire, but I have to say - my father’s sister is one of them. She has many flaws (like, she still wants me to let Jesus cure my gayness), but she has suffered through so much - literal years of psychological and physical abuse, alcoholism, therapy, recovery, relapses, again therapy and recovery, and she is still going strong, and has found immense joy in life.
I actually really like her; I just don’t talk about my girlfriend to her anymore.
lunaria; what’s your favorite fictional universe?
I grew up in the Harry Potter universe, and while I can recognise and acknowledge its flaws and problems, it will always be a home to me.
That, and the Godchild-type Victorian era. I’d probably be dead by now, but heavens, it would have been fabulous.
peony; share a small random book passage that means something to you.
“Hope can be a powerful force. Maybe there’s no actual magic in it, but when you know what you hope for most and hold it like a light within you, you can make things happen, almost like magic.”― Laini Taylor, Daughter of Smoke and Bone
tea rose; what’s something you always wanted to do but were too scared?
Ooooh boy. Horse riding? I love horses, but I’m so short and they’re so huge…I’m not necessarily scared, but I have mad respect before these creatures.
carnation; would you rather live longer or happier?
Both, if possible. XD But if I had to choose, I think I’d choose a happier life over a long one.
Thanks for asking! ♥

Inside Meghan Markle’s Former Los Angeles Home—and What It’ll Take to Buy It Now
realtor.com
Meghan Markle may be living like royalty with Prince Harry and baby Archie in Frogmore Cottage, but just a few years ago, it was a whole different deal. Check out the contrast in these photos of the home where Markle lived during her time in Los Angeles—currently for sale for a mere (at least by royal standards) $1,799,000.
This four-bedroom, three-bathroom Colonial is certainly modest compared to the Duchess’ new digs across the pond, but it’s stunning nonetheless.
Built in 1924, the Highland Avenue home is located in the Hancock Park neighborhood on a less than two-tenths of an acre. The former actress rented this home with her first husband, Trevor Engelson, after she landed her most famous role, on the TV show “Suits.”
Still, isn’t that price a bit steep for this rather humble abode?
Well, Hancock Park may not be as well known outside Los Angeles as Beverly Hills, but the tree-shaded neighborhood of historic homes is “uber pricey, and it’s difficult to get into anything under $2 million,” says Cara Ameer, a real estate agent licensed in California and Florida with Coldwell Banker Vanguard Realty.
Combined with the royal factor and low inventory in that area, this might make for a quick sale.
Want to take a look inside this two-story home? Prepare to be royally impressed.
The expansive windows let in a lot of light, so you can take advantage of that L.A. sunshine. And in the evening, you can create your own ambiance, thanks to the abundance of recessed lights.
Perfect for entertaining, the open floor plan gives the home an airy, welcoming feel.
realtor.com
But there are drawbacks: The cozy kitchen is probably best suited to efficient cooks who know how to work that stove-sink-fridge triangle.
“The home’s kitchen is surprisingly small, and the backyard, while spacious, does not have a pool or more of an outdoor living space,” says Ameer. “That being said, the home has quality finishes on the inside, so someone may be content to just live with it with an eye to expand in the future, which will certainly raise the value—for example, if the kitchen were enlarged or the house expanded and a pool added.”
Is this where Markle learned to perfect the roast chicken that won Prince Harry’s heart?
realtor.com
You can’t help but wonder if the actress entertained co-stars in this welcoming home.
The open-concept dining room is right off the living room, making it easy to carry on lively conversation.
realtor.com
You’ve got to love how the dining room opens out to this covered patio space. It opens up the whole room and probably makes the house feel larger than it is.
This tiny terrace is a nice place to sip your morning coffee or a glass of wine in the evening.
realtor.com
The well-maintained yard is ideal for a garden party. Though if we’re being honest, it could benefit from some pops of color. We’re sure Markle would have placed a vase of peonies at the center of that table.
Is this where the Duchess of Sussex let her beloved pooches frolic?
realtor.com
The property looks nice and even, perfect for backyard games or even a swing set.
realtor.com
Markle and Prince Harry are said to be considering a move back to the States to be closer to the Duchess’ mom, Doria Ragland. Something tells us it may be tough to transition, based on where they live now!
This bedroom has its own sitting area.
realtor.com
This open hallway connects the bedrooms.
realtor.com
With four bedrooms, you’ve got plenty of space for guests.
realtor.com
The family room is another tasteful and light-filled.
realtor.com
Ameer believes the property’s tony address will help it attract buyers.
“Hancock Park is a highly desirable area of Los Angeles that is centrally located, close to Paramount Studios and affords easy access to shopping, dining and of course television and other movie studios,” she notes. “It is still less expensive versus Beverly Hills.”

flower specialists in London
It's legitimate: London's floristry scene is more sizzling than at any other time, with astonishing new flower vendors springing up everywhere. Regardless of whether you're after a bundle that will fit through your letterbox or searching for the fanciest blossoms for your big day, we've gathered together the absolute best of the group.
Tumblr media
Philippa Craddock
Harry and Meghan have picked style most loved Philippa Craddock as the flower specialist for their wedding - she'll be dressing St George's Chapel in regular blooms and plants, including white greenery enclosure roses, peonies and foxgloves. Known http://www.flowerssameday.org.uk/ for her work with brands, for example, Alexander McQueen and Dior, you can toss anything at Philippa, including - as has occurred - an interest for 40,000 pink roses for a wedding with just a couple of days' notice. With stores in Selfridges and Walton Street, she's a botanical driving force.
Floom
You realize that scene in Sex and the City where Charlotte is astonished by the blooms she's arranged for Miranda's mom's burial service? All things considered, Lana Elie, originator of online conveyance administration Floom, had a similar ordeal and chosen she would take care of business. Simply type in the postcode of where you need to send your roses on their super-simple to-utilize site, and it'll raise wonderful bundles from nearby flower vendors around there. After a couple of straightforward advances, you'll have conveyed an exquisite pack with a low carbon impression. Virtuoso.
Red and Violet
In the event that you happen to meander down the boulevards of Kensal Rise, you won't almost certainly oppose flying into Scarlet and Violet's botanical asylum. It's an Aladdin's Cave, pressed with each kind of blossom you could envision. Gracious, and they likewise did the blooms for Kate Moss' wedding. Need we state more?
Jam Jar Flowers
Their smooth and a la mode plans have graced the rooms of Sketch and Chiltern Firehouse, so you can just envision the amount they'll improve your very own home. We prescribe agreeing to accept their blossom conveyance administration (a huge pickle container of blooms at whatever point you like!), or go the additional mile and book into their bloom school, which has a scope of classes from blossom squeezing to seven days of blossom orchestrating and table-styling held in an estate in the South of France. Magnificent.
Bloomon
What's the most chipper thing you can envision turning up on your doorstep? A lovely pack of blooms, clearly. Bloomon will deal with that for you, conveying another one consistently. Pick a little, medium or expansive course of action and they'll even give you the alternative to purchase the coordinating vase.
Freddie's Flowers
With a surname like Garland and flower vendors for guardians, it was an easy decision for attractive Freddie to begin his own bloom conveyance administration. He'll bring you new, regular blooms once every week and even give you tips on the most proficient method to mastermind them. In addition, at £20 a pop, they're a genuine take.
Flowerbx
In case you're subsequent to something specifically, Flowerbx will be the folks to have it. They've removed the broker, so the roses are sent specifically from the market in Holland to your doorstep. From sublime hyacinths to astounding tuberose, they don't get fresher than this.

unrequited (a whoever-you-want-it-to-be imagine)
When the feeling first hits him, he kind of hates himself.
Falling in love with his teammates’ girlfriend was not something he had ever intended to do. In fact, it was so ironically awful, so typical of those romantic comedies that she loved, that upon realisation of his feelings he almost wanted to bury himself in FIFA and takeout and never leave the house again.
And he can’t help but always want to watch her, in the least creepy way possible. Watch the sparkle in her eyes, her smile and her dimples, the manically animated gestures her hands make whenever she talks, how tight her jeans are and the way they hug her legs…
Sometimes, he tries to think positively and focus on the fact that while he doesn’t have her like that, like him, he’s lucky enough to at least be her friend. Lucky enough to have her in his life, lucky enough to be able to bask in her presence once in a while, lucky enough to listen to her voice, lucky enough to know her.
(Of course, he doesn’t know her like that, and the occasions he sees her are restricted to the times when he’s there too, but he’d always been taught to appreciate the little things in life.)
Because he’d rather have as a friend than nothing at all, and he can’t bring himself to betray his teammate and genuinely close friend, who’s never been anything but supportive and kind and eager to listen.
“I’d rather have her as a friend than nothing at all.”
“I value our friendship too highly.”
“I can’t be pining after a girl with a boyfriend, you know?”
“I don’t want to risk throwing it all away.”
It’s as if it’s planned out for him.
And truly, there are times when this is true.
For example, when they organise a film night in late November to get into the festive spirit early (“It’s never too early.”, is what she quips in response.) and he gets to watch her eyes light up during Love Actually and feel her hand grip his knee during that scene with Mark and Juliet. Or whenever they go out as a group and the pair of them end up leaving early to get McDonalds because she tells him she can’t put up with another Calvin Harris song or she might have to murder the DJ.
Then there are the darker, more miserable days. When he can’t run in a straight line at training or kick the ball within 10m of his target, and his insides just ache, and food seems to lose its taste and he thinks he’d probably rather take a bad fall and miss the rest of the season and be confined to his bed than watch him kiss her again. Because he’s never been in this deep before, never expected to fall so quickly for a girl who he just seemed to click with, never mind a girl with a boyfriend.
(And not just any boyfriend, but his teammate and close friend of so many years and the person who he’s been able to rely on and go to with any of his problems awaiting open ears and good advice.)
(Something’s telling him it’s probably not the best idea to go to him with this problem.)
He often finds himself lying in bed, tossing and turning and unable to sleep, in the early hours of the morning with nothing but the thought of her running through his mind. Her laughing at one of his puns, her sitting opposite him in McDonalds, her face in the stands wearing his club’s jersey and the team colours painted on her face, her, her, her.
And his mind would cling to short, but sweet memories, minuscule fleeting moments when her presence would leave him giddy, and her smile would light up the entire surrounding vicinity.
He plans to confess his feelings, plans to move away, plans to put in a transfer request and beg her to run away with him all at the same time. One moment he feels ready to declare his feelings (usually after a few too many shots of tequila) and the next he realises that if he can’t be with her, he’s not sure if he wants to be with anyone.
It’s not like he doesn’t meet other girls, after all. Nice, funny, pretty girls too.
But they don’t appreciate the little things like her.
And he loves her, loves her so much he feels his heart about to burst, but at the same time he hates her, for not wanting to be with him, for having a boyfriend, for making it so difficult not to fall in deeper every time she speaks. He’s had nasty breakups before and moped around for days afterwards, but it’s true that one sided love hurts the most.
At the end of the day, that’s all it really is.
Unrequited.
(How unbelievably shit.)
He tells his best friend, and his confession elicits a horrified holler of “are-you-thick” and “what-are-you-talking-about” and “you-fucking-idiot-how-have-you-gone-and-fallen-in-love-with-the-one-person-you’re-probably-never-going-to-be-with”.
(He doesn’t need to be told he’s an idiot. He’s already pretty aware of the fact.)
It’s no surprise that she would pick him anyway, regardless of whether or not he poured his heart out. Because her boyfriend’s a great guy, funny, caring and attractive, he treats her how she deserves, and most importantly, he makes her happy. And happy enough, evidently, because just as he’s about to leave the house, with the intentions of buying a bouquet of flowers and a card to finally confess his feelings, he receives a photograph, from the team’s Whatsapp group chat.
It’s a photo of her, beaming and teary-eyed, waving her left hand in the air with a shiny diamond ring on her fourth finger, glimmering in the light and granting the promise of a future. She said yes!!!!!
Yes.
Yes.
(And simultaneously, a massive no to him.)
It’s like a slap in the face. In fact, that would probably hurt less.
But he still finds himself leaving, still finds himself asking for twenty purple peonies, her favourite flower, at the florist’s, still finds himself scrawling out a hasty message and texting her to ask if she’d be free to chat later that evening.
Because he has to tell her. It was now or never, and at some point, you’ve got to just rip off the band-aid.
(Right?)
